I like some BrewDog beers, but they priced themselves right out of my interest. I'll grab a pint occasionally at Draught if they have it.

This is the best Chocolate Stout I've had.. they used to sell it at Specs in Beaumont and those 4 got me pretty buzzed... aren't they 10%?
I miss those, they stopped selling them there for some reason.
I'll try that this week as I tour the brewery! I love their brown ale.

This is the best stout I have had in a long time, had it at GABF:

Surprised none of the Texas breweries have something similar, it was delicious.

No, but there are a lot of really good Belgian beers out there. You should sample all you can. Root Cellar/Darkside Fermentation makes some pretty good ones - their Sirius Dubbel is on tap right now.

Costco has a package right now with 3-.333 liter bottles of Chimay blue, and a Chimay Goblet for 13.99 right now. Just saw it yesterday.
I like Chimay as well, but as has been said, there are many good Belgians that you should try. I think you would be happy with many of the beers from St. Bernadus brewery (I have said it before, but Watou Trippel is my favorite beer if you can find it). Satan's Red De Block is a good Belgian Pale ale and won't break the bank as quickly as the others.

Many of these can be found at Flying Saucer, the yard house, I believe twin peaks has a good selection (haven't been there yet). Shit, Chesters Hamburgers has about 100 beers to choose from. The "favorite beer" that I mentioned above, I got it when my wife and I went to dinner at a restaurant called M two up in Austin on fourth street.
.... This is not to say that I don't enjoy having a good Duvel at home every once in a while.
Also, with my family on Thanksgiving, my father, my uncles and myself always bring some random box of beers so we all have a great variety. I just bought the Leinenkugels Winter variety pack to bring to Thanksgiving. We shall see how it turns out.

Maybe it was a limit on how many bottles you can buy? We limit bottle sales because we have a limited quantity available for sale.
We make lots of stronger abv beers so I don't know what you're talking about.
I believe it was a pitcher of a strong beer... wouldn't sell it.

I think generally if they sell it in an 8oz glass they probably won't sell a pitcher or growler. Those beers usually take a lot of time, money and effort to make so I don't begrudge them that.

They sell pitchers, but the reason for not selling had nothing to do with time money and effort... something about it being too strong for 2 people or something, not sure.. and there was 3 of us.
Regardless, I was in mood for some strong stout, so I just went to BJ's, and I believe the alcohol content was about the same of that I wanted to try... didn't understand it but I guess next time..

Link (http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2011/12/01/hanson-mmmhop-beer-taps-new-market-for-hop-stars/?hpt=hp_c2/)
Hanson's 'MMMHop' beer taps new market for hop stars
Ah, the 90s. It was the age of innocence – and Fruit Gushers.
It was the decade that brought us "Happy Happy Joy Joy," a painstaking interest in Cory and Topanga's relationship, Shaq's impeccable acting skills in "Kazaam!" and Tamagotchis.
It also brought us Hanson: the then-long-haired trio of brothers who belted out their sweet, sweet harmonies to teens and tweens around the nation.
And now it seems they’re taking one such harmony, 1997's infectious "MMMBop," to the beer aisle – with the launch of “MMMHop.”
After all, what better way to relive the decade that was “all that and a bag of chips” than at a bar - especially since Hanson’s original fan base is of legal drinking age now.
Our pals over at the Marquee Blog have the inside scoop:
The '90s pop trio, famous for their long locks and the hit tune MMMBop, is in the process of expanding their brand (yes, they have a brand) with their own beer: MMMHop.
The India Pale Ale – to be made available in 2012 – will join Zac, Taylor and Isaac's other merchandise, which includes a board game and a record player.
“We of course make records, they are fundamental to what we do,” Zac Hanson recently told reporters in Oxford, England, via Rolling Stone. “But we wanted to create a brand so that our fans have a greater experience.”
Turns out, there's a whole sector of the beer-brewing industry that has yet to be tapped. Nineties pop song inspired beers? Right this way:
"Lager than Life" by the Backstreet Boys
"No Suds" by TLC
"(Dirty) Hop" by *NSYNC (stylized correctly)
"4 Saisons of Loneliness" by Boyz II Men
"Ale Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy
"Baby Got Bock" by Sir Mix-A-Lot
"This is How We Brew It" by Montell Jordan
"Weiss Weiss Baby" by Vanilla Ice
"Kreik" by Radiohead
"Bitte Sweet Symphony" by The Verve
I love the names here. Click on the link, they all look totally douchy.
Edit: check the comments too, a lot of people have been adding their own.

Just got back from my local boonies liquor store. Picked up two bottles of the 2010 Abyss to go with my leftover 2009 bottle I've been hoarding, a Black Butte (which they screwed up the price for, so I got it for $2.99), and a Sam Adams Vixen. My counter is very happy.
http://desmond.yfrog.com/Himg741/scaled.php?tn=0&server=741&filename=lpkol.jpg&xsize=640&ysize=640
Edit: Just realized that I got two bottles of last year's vintage. This may be the only time it pays to live far away from beer snobs, as there were still a good 4-5 bottles of the 2010 left when I checked out earlier. Now I'm back on the hunt for 2011 - we're saving the 2009 and a 2010 so we can do a flight.

I watched an episode of Three Sheets the other day where they talked about how Guinness beer is way different in Ireland than it is here, and that was the main difference, aren't you supposed to wait 2 minutes for it to settle before you drink when it's nitro? I believe that's what they said on that episode.. it was interesting, I believe Left Hand's milk stout is also nitro, not sure though.. and there is a huge difference between tap and bottle as far as taste.

I believe that's what they said on that episode.. it was interesting, I believe Left Hand's milk stout is also nitro, not sure though.. and there is a huge difference between tap and bottle as far as taste.
Odells Brewery in Fort Collins does a nitro pull of almost all of their beers alongside traditional pours. I've never had the Lefthand milk stout on a nitro pull, though, only the regular bottle. It's pretty good.
I would not be able to age a beer, especially that one.. I wouldn't resist the urge..
I have to put things away where I won't notice them. This is where having a wine fridge comes in handy.

Jess informs me we still have an unopened bottle of the Abyss. I guess its last years. Thats a good start to the weekend!
These types of beers can be aged for quite a while. A friend and I decided to "build our own beer" and by the time we finished the ingredients list, it was definitely an imperial stout. We named our beers at the time based on events that happened during the brewing process. We called this one the Imperial Grackle. He cracked one open after over five years and he said it tasted amazing.

No doubt that the aging helped it a lot. The 2009 had some cool flavors and a hint of ginger even came out. We drank a bottle of the 2010 and the 2011 afterwards and neither were as good although both were good. We have another bottle of each that we'll age for some time and I"m looking forward to them in a couple of years. I think I may actually try to find another few bottles because that 2009 was great.

Ranger Creek's Mesquite Smoked Porter's malt is cold smoked. I know Rob Landerman, their brewer - I asked him how the hell they kept the mesquite flavor present without overpowering the malt and everything else. Nice beer, much better than Stone Smoked Porter IMO. At the Draught House Anniversary in October he brought up a firkin of it he had thrown some beef jerky into, it was pretty good as well (even though it sounded odd).

I got a bottle of Black Metal for my birthday (apropo since the friend who gave it to me is a beer connesuir as well as a metal head). I am thinking about opening it tonight. Anyone have any thoughts on it?

It's a pretty good Imperial Russian Stout.
Edit: Also easily Jester King's best beer.

None of those 6 are smokey, but you should pick up 5 of them on your next trip to the liquor store if you haven't tried them, lol (Double Bastard won't be there since it was released months ago and doesn't last long). Actually, maybe only 4: I can't tell a difference between the Arrogant Bastard and the Oaked Arrogant Bastard.

Sorry I didn't come back and review.
I did open it up and as I was pouring it, I realized that it was the darkest beer I have ever poured (though not thick). I even got a little on my hand and it looked like I had just changed the oil on my car and got some dirty oil on me. Needless to say I was a little apprehensive due to the fact that many of the dark beers I have drank have been bitter and since this was substantially darker I was thinking that I may be overwhelmed by the bitterness. Nope. It wasn't bitter at all. It kinda tasted like toasted caramel, bit of chocolate, and some leathery aroma/taste. I liked it a lot and I would absolutely recommend it.

It was good, but unfortunately I only got to enjoy Flying Saucer, but boy do they need to fix a lot of things..
They have learn how to pour a beer.. I would always hope they would actually give my beer head, and it became funny when two of us would order the same beer and only one of us had head :lol.
The wait staff is also not very knowledgeable. In one occasion I ordered the Hop Head Flight and the girl comes back and tells me she can't find that beer. -_- and we can't forget the prices, wow.. some of the beers are very overpriced.
I do wish I would have gone to Freetail, but my brother thought Flying Saucer was closer, and I had already made plans for the Saucer the day after.
As far as stores, I visited the Alon Market and I think they're just as good as the Central Market or even better as far as selection.. I do wish I would have visited the Gabriel's with the "best" selection in SA.
Other than that, just visited the usual places I visited to eat, it was a good trip, I just have to make sure and come back to enjoy the rest of the places I planned to visit.

I was enough of an alcoholic to make it in to the top 10 at the San Antonio location. As with any new place in SA, it was overrun with douches when it first opened but eventually it settled into a pretty decent crowd.
If they had better food, I would have made it one of my frequent stops. But since they don't, I don't go by there to much anymore.

I think DogFish Head's 75 Minute Johnny Cask IPA is way better than the 60 or 90, had it last night:

The strong craft/brewing community makes it worth it though. All of the guys at 512, Independence, Live Oak, etc are all great guys.
Apparently the distributor run Austin Beer Festival was a total clusterfuck like the one here two years ago:

It's probably worth skipping tbh, the Houston and Austin ones have been disasters with over 10k people showing up and not enough beer or value. I don't know if Scott knows, but they are using images of Freetail taster glasses and Freetail is not listed as a brewery there.
