Better than Ruination?

I still gotta say I alternate between Stone Ruination IPA, Arrogant Bastard Ale (both regular and oaked), Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye, Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron, and Rogue Chocolate Stout as my favorite beers. Can't really pick 1 out of the 5 and nothing else I have ever tried is in that class.

had this while i was visiting a lady friend in thuringia. her stepdad didnt know english but brought out this "schwarzbier" and it was hands down the best beer ive ever had. by the color and head i expected it to be like guiness, but it was nothing like it. the taste was strong, but certainly manageable, and i didn't get a full feeling at all from it. there was no bitter aftertaste.

i could have easily downed atleast six of these in one sitting. it was fucking amazing.

Big Hops had a special Stone Brewery night last night that was so successful they are repeating it tonight. They will be tapping another keg of the RuinTen at 5pm if you are interested baseline bum.

On a whim, I stopped off at O.H.S.O in Scottsdale this afternoon. Usually I know what I want but today I decided to try different blends in 3oz shooters. Tried the Nitro Milk Stout by Left Hand, Hefeweizen Wheat by Four Peaks, White Chocolate Ale by Sonoran Brewing Co., Noche Dulce Vanilla Port by Borderlands and of course I had to try the RuinTen by Stone Brewing.

Not being a big fan of IPAs in general, I thought that RuinTen had a mellow finish. I appreciated the fruity tones as well.

My personal fave was the Nitro Stout. One of the smoothest brews I've had in a long time. I wound up getting 3 rounds :lol

That said, I thought all of them were pretty good. The most interesting one was the White Chocolate Ale. The flavor is there right from the jump but it doesn't hit you over the head and ruin the finish.

Surprisingly good list from a national publication tbh, but :lmao at Dogfish on top. I like how they and NB go about making beers (NB is a very green company and their sour program is great), but I can't really say I am a huge fan of many of both of their beers. Sierra was way too far down imo too.

I have never been out there for an event, but every one of my friends who has gone to one has come back pissed - they overbook everything. Friend of mine went out for the Cantillon thing, got in through a lottery selection and only got 2 oz of the beer he went out for after waiting in line for an hour. OTOH, the people that go out there just to have a beer or two on the weekend have a good time, even though their prices are high. I like the Funk Metal but I would never pay $20/btl for it

I was looking forward to this season so I could try lots of new things. I've gotten a slow start, but I've had 4 different Octoberfest brew, the only names I can remember are Rogtoberfest and The Real Ale Octoberfest, that I didn't care for at all---the seasonal from Independence "Oklahoma Sucks" was pretty good though. I've also had a couple of seasonal hard ciders that were really good and I'll keep trying them. I'm hoping to get out to The Dodging Duck real soon, their seasonals are always good.

I have not. I am planning to this year sometime, but that all depends on work and other factors. I've been fortunate to have met some of the employees and possibly Vinnie and his wife Natalie (I was a little buzzed when I supposedly met them...) at a craft beer fest down here in SoCal, so I'm not sure. They are one of my favorite breweries along with Alpine and Allegash so yeah, I want to trek to Mecca so to speak. I love the Younger but also enjoy the Supplication and Blind Pig...Elder is must-have, too. I want to take a trip back to Noble Ale Works sometime this month. Will report back if I do...

Well, Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/8951/) is pretty similar. :lol

You can get 4packs of the Oaked. I have never seen bombers of it, nor have I seen 4 packs of the regular Arrogant Bastard. Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Ale (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/140/2671/) reminds me a bit of Arrogant Bastard (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/92/), but I'd still take the Bastard (Bigfoot is outstanding of course also). This is about the time of year Sierra Nevada has 6 packs of Bigfoot, but I think they stop producing it after February if my memory serves me right.

My favorite Stone beer ever was a release they did in 2010 called Lukcy 13asartd (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/62645/) that was a blend of Oaked Arrogant Bastard, Arrogant Bastard, and Double Bastard (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/1056/). Double Bastard is another awesome Stone brew; a much higher alcohol content take on Arrogant Bastard, and much sweeter too (I prefer the original myself, but it's an absolute A+ beer). I think Double Bastard is released around November or so, so good luck finding it now. It's funny that it was barred from being sold in Texas for so long because it includes the word "masturbatory" on the write-up on the back of the bottle! :lol

We're talking shades of perfection with those beers though.

Lagers bore the hell out of me now. The only one I can say I really like is Pilsner Urquell (which is awesome). Maybe it's just an age thing, as I wasn't a fan of IPAs at your age either, and now they're my go-to beers. Maybe the bitterness of IPAs is too much for younger tastebuds?

Lagers bore the hell out of me now. The only one I can say I really like is Pilsner Urquell (which is awesome). Maybe it's just an age thing, as I wasn't a fan of IPAs at your age either, and now they're my go-to beers. Maybe the bitterness of IPAs is too much for younger tastebuds?
:depressed

but seriously :lol its not that its too much. i typically prefer stouts to anything else, and people say those have too bitter a taste. i usually just look at what stouts a bar has besides guiness and try some of those out. north coast is usually a good brewing company to look for

You ever tried the Rogue Chocolate Stout?

http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/132/1118/?ba=bros

That's one of my top 2. Love Sierra's stout also, and Guinness Extra Stout is always a favorite. Then Deschuttes Black Butte Porter is awesome too. If you're ever in Wyoming or Montana there is a spectacular stout out there called Snake River Zonker. What I would give to have that stuff sold nationally. Great great stout but I'm not going to pay $40 for a 12-pack to get shipped from Wyoming. Still, that's the other of my top 2 stouts.

I gotta admit I'm not too adventurous after being burned so many times on pilsners and other lagers. Urquell is the only one I can get that I know I'm going to really like.

In Austin. It's all sold out now, I've checked virtually every store. I was able to get 6 bottles over the past 2 weeks by going to a few different stores (Specs, Whole Foods) but all sold out everywhere as of last week from what I can tell.

Did get to have it on tap in San Antonio at World of Beers which was awesome. Same with Saint Arnolds, all sold out and took me about 5 stores to get 5 bottles of that.

Did not hear about this. I'm not a huge fan of Green Flash. The hope is they keep the brewmaster Pat in charge of Alpine. This is the start of bigger craft breweries cannibalizing each other. Both are SD beers so I see this as Green Flash trying to keep pace with Ballast, Stone, and the like in the area. Alpine has a bigger imprint here in the L.A. County while Green Flash is pretty well liked in SD. I know they caught flack for their earlier acquisitions. Well, it says they've been collaborating longer than this merger. I hope they keep their identity and well, it will be awesome for the rest of the country to get Nelson IPA w/o having to hustle for it. I see this as a lateral change with a potential for good things. They will keep Pat on as the head of Alpine so perhaps it'll be alright.

That's probably what'll happen as a direct competition for the larger SD breweries, I hope you guys get the same quality. I started out with Stone but to me, there is maybe one or two that I will still drink from them and that is a direct result to nothing being available. Pure Hoppiness and the Nelson IPAs will sustain any IPA head for the foreseeable future.

Jester King was suggested by a buddy of mine who has family out that way, I think I'm about 5 mins from it.

Don't really know what days/nights I'll have open but I'll try and swing by. I gave my cousin free reign over my time there and he's planning it all. So far I know I'll be deer hunting (bow), pheasant/duck hunting, and a day of cutting cattle. I'm really pumped on getting to cut cattle as I've never ridden a horse like that.

JK disappoints me mostly. Nothing to memorable for me. I've toured it twice, but left underwhelemed - even with the 10+ point stout (I believe it was the stout). It's fine to drink, but nothing that has ever really wow'd me.

Well, ok :lol. That is a random stat sort of. It can be respected, but I personally found it to be disappointing mostly. Not in the sense that it was bad, but for a respected brewery, I had really high expectations and never walked away wow'd.

There were good beers obviously, but compared to St Arnold, HnG and several others where I have at least had 1 pour that wow'd me, nothing ever completely blew me away at JK. It's worth a trip obviously, but for me, personally, I haven't found the one yet there.

I prefer going to Stanley's to just eat pizza and drink there, but TSA has mentioned he is a fan of sour beer so I threw it out there.

It's a good recommendation - they have solid beers and if the weather is nice, it's a really cool place.

Well, if any of you are in Portland Oregon, you have to do lunch or dinner at the Dechutes Brewpub, on NW 11th and Davis.

Try the Elk Burger...

Elk burgers are great. Ate that shit last time I was in Wyoming with a Snake River Zonker stout.

Yep. It is great!

After I said that, I had to go. Just got back home. Had an Elk Burger, their Chili, and some great beer. Came back home with three more bottles of Black Butte 26, a coffee mug, and 8 beer glasses. Bought a case of the BB26 two weeks ago, but wanted more so that when I'm ready to drink some, I don't have to break open the case.

This Pumking on TG is just so right.

Is that BBPXXVI different than the normal BBP?

Absolutely.

The Black Butte Porter is 5.2%. The Black Butte XXVI is the 26th anniversary Porter, and an Imperial porter at 10.8%. These bottles say "best after 6/13.15."

I have one bottle of the XXI left. It says "best after 10/17/10" and is 11%.

Oh - fantastic :tu. I really enjoy the regular BBP, and my Specs has the XXVI but I haven't grabbed any. I swooped up as much Pumpking and Pumpkinator as I could so didn't grab any yet.
