Drinking the Crown Valley Gunslinger double IPA 9% tonight.

I'm really into beer, but I just can't get into IPA's. I really want to, but it just doesn't taste good to me. I've had some mild ones and they are ok, but I haven't found the one that really sets me off on getting into IPA's.

You're in Austin, right? Try the 512 IPA. It's a good, smooth IPA. It's only available on tap currently, but it's my go to beer when I go out.

Ya - I'm in Austin. Ive tried Dogfish Head (which was good) 60min IPA, Sam Adams Lattitude 48, Stone IPA and a few other randoms that I know were good quality, but nothing that hooked me. I'll give 512 a try..I normally drink their Pecan Porter

Absolutely.

The Black Butte Porter is 5.2%. The Black Butte XXVI is the 26th anniversary Porter, and an Imperial porter at 10.8%. These bottles say "best after 6/13.15."

I have one bottle of the XXI left. It says "best after 10/17/10" and is 11%.

Just picked up my first bottle. Says best after 6/15, but I cracked tonight to try. Very solid, but I picked up the fruit a lot more than I anticipated. Question: Is it normal for a lot of sediment? Might be me just pouring too fast, but there was a lot of yeast sediment.

Not uncommon in big ales, fermentation continues in the bottle. Doesn't really affect flavors all that much, and refrigerate for a few days and it generally drops to bottom.

Figured as much - thanks. Wanted to try first/quickly, but will grab another bottle and let it sit for a few months then try again. I don't mind the sediment at all. Doesn't take away from anything and doesn't gross me out.

Like every venture in life, it's a race to see who has the bigger dick. Being able to brag about getting a bottle of rare special release porter made from fermented elephant smegma. Being among the first to try a newly tapped keg of the special new IPA that tastes exactly the fucking same as the last 50 special new IPA's but somehow you can trick your brain into tasting all the different nuances.

I'm not against it. I participate myself. I love plenty of craft beers and go searching for the rare shit too. Let's just all stop acting like this isn't a dick measuring contest, because it is.

Very true, but I don't really brag about what I find. I tend to pick out the unusual ones like the habanero sculpin and whatnot. I don't blog about it and probably the only place I participate is here and that's mostly to bring attention to a beer that you guys may not have in TX or whatnot. But I do see what you mean and there are tons of people that act that way.

I like to try new stuff sometimes but I'm in a pretty firm rotation with my ales right now. I'll switch up for the seasonal beers but I'm a creature of habit. I'll do a Sam Adams or a Shiner in a restaurant though if there is nothing I usually drink.

Tried Resin Double IPA tonight. Very good double. Good balance of hops and citrus and the alcohol is hidden will for a beer that clocks in at 9%.

I'm really not much of a drinker.

I had some Old Speckled Hen and it was quite good. Don't know what kind of beer it is and I don't know all the beer drinking terms but it was good. I know a lot about fermentation science but when it comes down to the actually craft I know nothing. Lots of variables, I don't see how they keep any alcohol consistent.

I fermented pure glucose (lab grade) with distilled water and some specialized yeast in Pyrex lab glass and then distilled some off and it smelled and tasted just like brandy but perfectly clear. ( only yielded a jigger full; did not start with much). There is so much going on biochemically even with really pure starting ingredients I just imagine quality control is a nightmare.

So here's a toast to the craft beer guys who can get consistent batches.
:bobo

Oh. It would also be nice to know what I liked about Old Speckled Hen. Cause I don't.

I haven't had either one of those. My current favorite is Oskar Blues Ten Fidy...and I'd put it just a little behind that not because it's worse, but because the flavor profile is a little different. Every time I raised the glass to my nose I got a big ole whiff of cherries and chocolate. Just damn good stuff. The cherry flavor came through even more as it warmed.

Yup. Every year. My uncle works with craft breweries. He travels the world and checks out new (to us) ingredients. Every year he gives us tickets to get in along with tons of tickets for beers. Then we hang out in the area where the brewers and supply groups hang out and they have a bunch of coolers filled with free beer from the breweries in attendance. Such a great event.

Will probably pick up some Odell this week, heard lots of good things about it and I've eyed it many times before but just never managed to reach for it. Same goes for Deep Ellum.

IPAs have rekindled my love of beer especially since I'm more of a Cannabis connoisseur. Beer was just boring before and I never saw it as remotely tasty, let alone delicious until I tried my first Hopadillo. Dat changed errthang.

And this thread has been a pretty informative guide, as well. When I first came across it I couldn't understand why it had so much fucking traction in such a short amount of time; I do now.

It's been a fun journey so far, some learning experiences here and there--my dumbass downed a 4pk of Dogfish 90 about a month ago, yeah :lol

I also find the evolution in taste intriguing. Drank Millerlite/corona for years, then XX amber, negra Modelo, Bohemia, new castle, guinness drought and indio began to pique my interest in heavier beers. Then I went through a pbr phase because it's a decent light and fucking cheap as hell--you can now get a 6pk for<$4. To this day it's my go-to light beer :lol fuckit

But IPAs are a whole new world. Off the top I've tried: Sierra Nevada torpedo, ballast point, stone, stone enjoy by xx/xx/2015, hopadillo, dogfish 90, st Arnold art car, sam adams rebel, lagunitas, and busted sandal slippery rock.

Will be trying your suggestions.

Don't gloss over all of the new Pale Ale's either, they are incorporating the same hops used in IPA's for a similar but lighter taste and %. And for an even lighter IPA taste be sure to check out the "session" ales. To me these are the greatest thing to come out of the IPA movement, now I don't have to have a shitty coors light on the golf course at 10 AM and can finally enjoy something with actual taste.

I finally got my wife off all the crappy light beers with a St. Arnold's Lawnmower.

Therefore I suggest this as the transition beer for people wishing to explore. My wife is not Magellan, miracles do happen.

All hail the Saint tbh.. These bastards at my HEB stay fucking up and never have the Endevour.. I ain't trying to drive the ghetto to get it :cry

I'd recommend Mama's Little Yella Pils by Oskar Blues. Great beer for those wanting to venture out of establishment beers.

Will give that a shot as well.

Some? Shit, try most. I know of one out of the 6 or so I've tried that regularly carries it. May have to pull an elderly and complain

Where is the Busted Sandal guy? I heard he lost someone to the new startup Weathered Souls. I want to know what WS is going to specialize in.

I also heard that WS is going to do small batches that lets the customers customize their own beer.

Stone RuiNation Triple IPA :tu

Decent smell, but nothing that really stands out. The near 11% ABV hides well behind the flavor. Not sure this beer warrants the 10 dollar/22 oz. price tag compared to some others, but it was ok.

10.8% FTW

Next on my list:

Knee Deep's Hop-De-Ranged Quad IPA - 12.2% ABV - 14 bucks for a bomber, this shit better be good

A few years ago, I was at Mellow Mushroom and we asked for a recommendation. Waiter suggested Stone RuinTen Triple IPA. It was about 105 outside so that may have colored my judgement. But it was probably the best beer I'd ever had. We ended up calling around to find out what stores still had some and ended up buying 12 of them. My buddy took them home and I forgot all about them. He gave them back to me about 6 months later. Needless to say, they were not the same as the first one.

Yeah, draft smells and tastes so much better.. I haven't had that Knee Deep shit yet, but god damn it better be good considering the price

Picked up a bomber of Stone Old Guardian 2016. Barleywine's are hard to find around here so I was definitely wanting to check it out. Lot's of different flavors going on...and the 11% ABV is well hidden. If you are a fan of the style, I highly recommend it.

Amazing how they can hide the alcohol these days. Seems like 5 years ago the double IPA's were almost undrinkable.

Man, I am not into barleywine's. Have tried a few and can't get into it. Same with sours although I have at least had some sour stouts I somewhat enjoyed.

Not related, but I finally got a tall boy of Oskar Blues Barrell-Aged Ten Fidy and it's amazing (just like regular Ten Fidy)

why is it ppl who go to a bottle shop always buy the safest brand drink for a party, knowing ppl wont complain about it...

hence why do you buy a 6pack only? why not buy a slab aka box of 24? we Asians always attend with a box its like ur cover charge for attending the party, u white kents rock up with a 6pack and ur already judged cause we know u going to drink all that 6 cans and maybe more; fkn freeloaders (only reason I buy 24 cause I know if they cant drink it all that night, with left overs the hosts will have to host another party or else they have a few boxes of beer in the garage collecting dusts)

and lol clowns who buy the cheapest beer, then goes to party drink some other clowns tastier branded beer...

Took me a while to get into sours and now I absolutely love them. Only thing I dislike about them now is the price and low alcohol %.

My favorite sours are from The Bruery

I've always liked them, but I have a few friends that took a long time to start enjoying them - one about 8 years. There's so much variety now in soursnow, you just gotta find the right one. I'm in Fort Collins at the moment sipping on a Dad and Dude'sBreweria Sativa CBD infused IPA

It's a bad a** place to visit IMO. Just a unique brewery and they have a lot of stuff (much of it is sours/florals), but it's definitely a cool place and you can find stuff you like.

Real Ale Brewing Co has a variety pack of 3 different kinds of beers, 2 of each kind.

Brewhouse Brown Ale
Devils Backbone (Belgian Tripel)
Firemans 4 (blond ale)
