Where did you read that a Neal signing meant Hairston would probably be gone? And please don't say McDonald...he's got about as much insight to the Spurs as my soon-to-be-born son.

As far as job security for non-guaranteed contracts go, I'd put it in this order...

1) Hairston
2) Temple
3) Gee
4) Jerrells

If Brown is brought in, it will be at the expense of the low man on the totem pole.
.

Take it for what its worth. It's just one article.

Curious that it didn't mention Temple, Gee or Jerrells as they are also guards.

That is only an uncertain opinion.

"The odd player out could be Hairston unless Neal is sent to the Austin Toros."

Without going back for quotes I get the impression that some think Hairston is better than Temple at guard.

Temple came in late and was impressive in some of the regular season games. He defended and shot well. He was rewarded with some minutes in 6 games of the playoffs and once again performed well.

Hairston on the other hand in two years never has seemed to me to perform up to the lofty heights attributed to him by some. He was waived in April of last year before the playoffs. And he never got off the pine during this year's playoffs. I'm not ever sure he was activated, but if he was, then why did he not play while Temple played with veteran poise?

There has been much talk of Temple being Pop's new favorite. You don't hear that about Hairston. It's "we know what he can bring to the table."

We also have seen that he isn't a shooter that will spread the floor. So If all he can bring to the table is hustle and "freakishly long arms" then the guy is definitely not at the top of the Guard backups and better watch his ass as to backup at SF.

Anonymous Cowherd

I thought the consensus opinion was that Hairston is there to be back-up SF though? Guard comparisons irrelevant in that case

Neal and Anderson will cut into Hairston playing time because when we need a guy who can hit an outside shot then Neal get the nod over Hairston.

Also it depends on how well Jefferson plays but I can aslo see Bonner getting some time at the SF postion over Hairston.

Either way guys like Hairston and Gee are not going to make any impact on our team they are just scrimage guys.

Jerrells should just be let go he sucks as PG and I would not want the Spurs to waist a Toro spot on him. They should be able to find a true PG with more upside then him.

Tyler Wilkerson To Sign In Israel If Spurs Don't Guarantee Him A Contract

Tyler Wilkerson, a rookie out of Marshall and one of several San Antonio Spurs' Summer League standouts, has agreed to a deal in Israel with defending champs Galil Gilboa according to Walla Sport.

The 6-foot-8 power forward averaged 11 points and 6.6 rebounds while starting three of the five Spurs games in Las Vegas.

Wilkerson showed to be an interesting NBA prospect in Vegas as he showed a strong motor in attacking the offensive glass as well as being a decent spot up shooter for his size. He doesn't seem to be able to do much with his back to the basket, but the Spurs have shown a knack for being okay with face-up forwards - especially if they're able to contribute on the glass as Wilkerson did in Vegas.

Wilkerson's best games came against Los Angeles - he played well against the Clippers (while matched up with lottery pick Al-Farouq Aminu) and the Lakers (he matched up with draft picks Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter in this game). Against the Lakers, Wilkerson scored 20 points and grabbed nine boards (four offensive) and then followed that up with a 12 point, six rebound and three steal performance against Aminu and the Clippers.

Interestingly enough, according to my usually accurate but loose-google-translation system, Wilkerson does have an out with the Israeli team if he's offered a guaranteed contract with the Spurs. The Spurs do seemingly have a need for a sixth big man, but it will more than likely come down to a training camp battle between Wilkerson and fellow San Antonio Summer Leaguers (and former Spurs draft pick) James Gist along with Darryl Watkins also an outside possibility.http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2010/7/26/1588609/tyler-wilkerson-to-sign-in-israel

Josh Powell Signs with Hawks

The big man arrives from Los Angeles Lakers

The Atlanta Hawks have signed forward/center Josh Powell to a contract, according to Executive Vice President/General Manager Rick Sund. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Powell, a 6-9, 240-pound forward/center, joins the Hawks after two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he was a reserve player for the two-time World Champions. He tallied 3.4 points and 2.4 rebounds during his Lakers career (10.4 minutes per game), and connected on .409 of his field goal attempts.

“I look forward to joining a franchise I’m very familiar with,” said Powell. “The Hawks have done some great things over the past few years, and I think it’s great to come back home and play here. They’ve enjoyed success in the East, and while they have room to improve and grow, the nucleus is here to make that next step.

“Obviously, I followed the Hawks quite a bit growing up, and the excitement during the Dominique (Wilkins) years was a great thing to watch. We have to continue to get better and hopefully I can bring a little bit of what I’ve learned from my days with Lakers to the team.”

A five-year professional, Powell was a local product at Riverdale (GA) High School who played collegiately at North Carolina State. Undrafted in the 2003 NBA Draft following his sophomore season at NC State, he spent several seasons in Europe before joining the Dallas Mavericks in 2005.

After one season with the Mavericks (2005-06), Powell split the next season between the Golden State Warriors (30 games) and Indiana Pacers (seven games) before landing with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2007-08. He brings 37 games of playoff experience to Atlanta, averaging 5.6 minutes per game.

Powell finished with averages of 9.7 points and 4.5 rebounds over his two-year collegiate career at NC State, with a 12.4 scoring mark as a sophomore.

The Cavaliers held a workout on Tuesday that included free-agents Damien Wilkins, Von Wafer and Alan Anderson.

"It went well," Wilkins told FanHouse. "They're a very good organization. They've got a great team even though they lost LeBron (James, an Akron native). I still think they can compete. They've got a really good coaching staff... I hope it works out (with the Cavaliers). Los Angeles Clippers re-sign Rasual Butler

Butlern established a new Clippers’ franchise record for most three-pointers made in a season, surpassing Terry Dehere when he knocked down his 140th three-pointer of the 2009-10 campaign

The Los Angeles Clippers today re-signed free agent forward Rasual Butler. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

Butler, who averaged a career-high 11.9 points to go with 2.9 rebounds and 33.0 minutes in 82 games played with Los Angeles last season, also connected on 41 percent of his field goals on the year. He was originally acquired by the Clippers along with cash considerations from the New Orleans Hornets on August 12, 2009 in exchange for a conditional second round draft pick in 2016.

On April 4, 2010 against the New York Knicks, the eight-year NBA veteran established a new Clippers’ franchise record for most three-pointers made in a season, surpassing Terry Dehere (1995-96) when he knocked down his 140th three-pointer of the 2009-10 campaign. In addition to his career mark in scoring, Butler finished the season with career-highs in three-pointers made (145) as well as attempted (432 – also a Clippers’ franchise record).

Butler was originally drafted by the Miami Heat in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2002 NBA Draft. Over his career, he has tallied 8.8 points and 2.7 rebounds while connecting on 40 percent of his field goals and 36 percent of his three-point attempts.

That is an interesting idea. He's a long 3/4 tweener with good rebounding, garbage scoring and shot-blocking instincts. He'd be an interesting fit as a 6th big and another option at SF if we want to go big (perish the thought! :lol).

House returns to Heat as latest addition

After completing the greatest free-agent coup in NBA history, Miami Heat (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/mia/) president Pat Riley continues to surround Dwyane Wade (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3708/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3708/news), LeBron James (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3704/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3704/news) and Chris Bosh (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3707/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3707/news) with strong complementary talent.

The Heat have reached an agreement with 32-year-old guard Eddie House (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3436/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3436/news) on a two-year contract for $2.8 million, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday. The second year of the deal is a player option for $1.4 million.

Miami beat out the Chicago Bulls (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/chi/) to get House. With a history of clutch shooting that includes multiple big games with the Boston Celtics (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/bos/) over the past three years, House will help support Miami’s starry core off the bench.

He also will give the Heat a well-regarded three-point shooter, with 749 treys made in his career at a nearly 40 percent conversion rate.

House played his first three NBA seasons (2000-03) with the Heat before joining eight teams over the next seven years. Jones really should have picked the Spurs, where he'd have been close to, if not a full fledged lock, to be in the rotation. With the Heat, he's now buried and has little chance of being in the rotation.

Warriors Improve Offer To Tolliver, Wolves Still In Picture

Anthony Tolliver expects to sign with the Warriors or Timberwolves.

"I haven't made a decision yet," Tolliver said, "but we're getting there and I hope to have a decision soon.

"Once they have their final (financial) figure and years guaranteed, that's when I plan on making my decision --unless somebody comes in late," he added.

Tolliver said the Warriors' initial contract offers were "really low. I was disappointed."

The Warriors have since improved their offer to Tolliver.

Funny to remember that when the Spurs cut him, people here said he was not a NBA player. Then after putting up nice numbers in GS they said "it's Donnie Nelson system", he will not get another contract. Now he's getting paid, and quite nicely, so I guess the next excuse is that it's the T-Wolves FO we're talking about.

How long was the interval between the Spurs cutting him and his getting anything done in GS? Wasn't it at least a year?

The Spurs FO is far from infallible, but you can't blame them for passing on a guy who seemed a stiff when cut and isn't demonstrably not a stiff as a spot minutes guy like he'd be on our team. I wish Tolliver all the luck in the world, but he's done nothing, really. When Bonner eclipses your usefulness by an order of magnitude, you know you aren't terribly special.

Sure, the Spurs can offer more money and he's shown once before that he's willing to leave a championship team for money (though in this case, he'd potentially be able to do both; contend and make the most money), but the fact that those two teams are considered certified contenders and the fact that he has won a championship with both of those organizations and presumably has established relationships with some of the players on both teams, would likely mean he'd pick either of them over the Spurs.

It's too bad, because he'd be a perfect fit for the Spurs. Excellent size for an SF, can play small ball four, can play the stopper role, shoot the three, is clutch and when motivated (which he's proven to be when he's on a short term contract that isn't overly lucrative and contending for a championship) good enough to close games at SF if Jefferson struggles again.

So Hornets have trade Collison, Posey and Wirght for Ariza and Belinelli. After a draft where they traded a lottery pick for financial reasons, their crappy offseason continue.

So, Chris Paul wants to leave the Hornets and they trade Collison... :downspin:

Trading Collison to build around Paul makes ton of sense for them. They tried to play Collison alongside Paul and it didn't work at all (lack of size and two ball dominant players).

The reason why I find Hornets offseason crappy is that they had 2 great trade assets (a lottery pick and Collison) and they got very few from them.

I would be surprised to see Posey waived. He still has 2 years in his contract and with a possible lock out, Pacers could buy out something that they won't finally pay.

If he is bought out, Spurs should go after him but only with the min. with the luxury tax, a LLE contract would cost $6M to Spurs next year. An aging Posey isn't worth $6M.

I am so surprised the Rockets gave up on Ariza already. Not to beat a dead horse, but looking at RJ's contract now makes me even more sick knowing 1)Ariza was available & 2)That the Rockets turned Ariza's "bad contract" into a solid young player and a 6M TE while the Spurs got nothing for RJ.

Granted, he's aging, but Posey, when he's had long term security and been on a non contender, has always lacked motivation to consistently play hard. When he hasn't had long term security and he's been on a contender, he's been consistently motivated.

If the Spurs got him, I'd expect him to have a solid season. But as I said, I think he'd pick the Celtics (Heat have a full roster; supposedly Beverley's contract is guaranteed) over the Spurs. The Spurs only chance would probably be to offer him the remainder of their mid-level exception. If they're not going to offer him more money, why would he pick them over the Celtics?

The Pacers don't like having to buy players out, but Posey makes no sense for them. They've got Granger, Dunleavy, Rush, Jones, George and Stephenson to play the wings. Even though Granger is likely to play plenty of PF next season and Stephenson could play some PG, that's still a lot of depth.

Indeed. This move makes the Spurs look even more foolish for offering RJ the contract they did before he tested the market(if that is actually what happened). RJ had basically no options besides the Spurs...so they could have painted him into a corner by offering him a two year deal with a third year partial guarantee on a S&T to Houston for Ariza. If they sweeten it with a pick I'm betting Houston bites.

Posey has had a bad reputation about his work ethic for some years. but over 30 a player needs to work even harder, especially during off season, to stay in NBA shape. Posey's last 2 seasons decrease likely wasn't just the lack of motivation, it was the combination of age and to little work. I'm not sure that this is reversible when the player will turn 34 during next season.
overall I always thought Posey would be a very good solution for the Spurs SF spot. but I do think his time is over and he wouldn't help the Spurs today, even not on the cheap. (if he is bought out, what I don't believe will happen)

I don't think he'll get bought out either, even though the Pacers are overloaded at SF. How could you not want the Spurs to take a chance on him if he's bought out though? Name another backup SF option that the Spurs could sign who has a better chance of providing what they need out of that position than Posey? I see it as a no brainer.

Posey will not seek a buyout from the Pacers

James Posey's agent, Mark Bartelstein, told SI.com that the veteran swingman will not seek a buyout from Indiana. (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/chris_mannix/08/12/usa.notebook/) Posey and point guard Darren Collison were acquired by the Pacers in a four-team trade on Wednesday. While Indiana has a pressing need for Collison, it would appear to have little need for the 33-year-old Posey, who has two years and more than $13 million remaining on his contract. The Pacers used their lottery pick to draft Paul George in June and already have wings Danny Granger, Mike Dunleavy, Dahntay Jones and Brandon Rush on their roster. The Rockets want to contend, which means they wouldn't trade with the Spurs, and that they don't see trading Ariza to NO making the Hornets a contender. Prince is still on the books for a lot of money, which means we could only trade for him, which means we didn't have a package we were willing to build or the Pistons were willing to take to get him. Posey would also have to be traded for, and he's a joke at his current value, so leave it at that. Let's not try to magically convert these situations into the Spurs FO being remiss, howsabout?

Just because they are available doesn't mean they would have agreed to a trade. We would have nothing to offer for prince's 11 mil a year and don't mention a S&T with RJ because I'm pretty sure Detroit would rather have Princes expiring than a new deal with RJ, so that rules that trade out. Regarding Ariza I don't understand why Houston would trade him to an in-state rival when we can offer nothing like courtney lee (unless you are proposing we got rid of hill or blair, mcdyess is about the only thing that matches up with Ariza's contract and I'm pretty sure they have better offers than that including a young player in courtney lee, so that's out. Posey could have probably been available but they just got Ariza for him so that's better than anything we could offer. They might have been willing to take on RJ in a s&t but Posey has not shown anything over the past couple years to show he is a better player than RJ. His defense used to be good and is still above average but he is already 33 and is showing a fast decline in his game. People seem to think that because a trade didn't happen that we never picked up the phone and asked.

He wants out of Portland because he thinks he has starter potential, but when no teams convinced Portland with a trade offer, he should have waken up and realise that teams doesn't want him so bad.

Actually teams have offered pretty good deals for him (1st round picks are nothing to sneeze at), but the Blazers GM is just simply waiting to let every team ante each other up and see what's the best deal when the smoke clears. Portland has no hurry to make a deal.

I think what's going on with Rudy himself is that now that he's in Spain, they're probably offering good money and minutes to play there. Plus he's playing alongside Navarro who was another guy that traded the NBA for the cozyness of playing at home.

Butler was the 42nd pick in this year's draft. He was projected as a potential lottery choice before he tore a ligament in his left knee during the Mountaineers' Final Four loss to eventual NCAA champion Duke.

Didn't Delonte not want to be traded from the Celtics when they first traded him? I thought he was really disappointed as he didn't want to leave.

If that was the case then it's good that they brought him back.

personally, i want them out of our conference, but at least outside of our division. new jersey/new york would be nice for both of them.

Knicks reportedly reject three-team deal for Fernandez

The Knicks reportedly rejected a three-team trade with the Blazers and Pacers that would've landed disgruntled guard Rudy Fernandez(notes) in New York, according to the New York Daily News.

The Daily News, citing an anonymous source, reports the deal would've sent Anthony Randolph(notes) to Indiana, a first-round pick to Portland and Fernandez to the Knicks.

The Blazers are reportedly "insisting on receiving a first-round pick," according to the Daily News.

The Knicks acquired Randolph earlier this offseason in a trade with the Golden State Warriors.

Fernandez was fined $25,000 on Aug. 19 for his public comments about his desire to be traded

Amundson Still Looking For Home

Training camps will open around the NBA in three weeks and free-agent forward Louis Amundson is still looking for a home.

"He's going to wind up fine here at the end of the day," agent Mark Bartelstein said.

"I think there are going to be some teams out there that are going to regret not going after him. He is a coach's dream. The hardest thing in this league to find is bigs that play with great energy every night, and just change the tenor and dynamics of the game."

Golden State, New Orleans, Indiana, Toronto and Charlotte are among the teams that have been linked to Amundson.

"Louis and I would like to have something done yesterday," Bartelstein said.

"At this point it's gone on for quite awhile and he wants to make sure he doesn't make a decision just to make a decision. There are a couple variables that have to play out that we think give us a clearer picture of what we think is the right spot. As soon as that becomes clearer, he'll want to make a decision right away."

Suns Unlikely To Give Dudley Extension

Suns forward Jared Dudley is eligible for a contract extension through October, but the team is unlikely to give him a long-term deal.

Phoenix made long-term commitments to Hedo Turkoglu and Josh Childress this summer, meaning they'll likely let Dudley become a restricted free agent next offseason.

"It would be nice," Dudley said of an extension.

"I'm not optimistic. My mindset is to go out and play my last year and go as far as we can. At the end of the year, I know if we win, I'm going to have a good year. I do a pretty good job of keeping healthy. My goal is to come out and have a better year than last year and have the team better. When a team is successful, everybody usually does pretty well. Carmelo Anthony(notes) wants out of Denver, and Worldwide Wes delivered that message to the Nuggets with all the delicacy of a jackhammer at Sunday morning services. Do yourself a favor and trade him, the agent told the organization weeks ago.

Denver was furnished with a short list of teams and told to get to work.

Mentioned teams are New Jersey, Clippers, Bobcats, Golden States, and Knicks(but Adrians says that Knicks has nothing to offer).

Golden State would be a good place for him. Nellie doesn't try to plug players into a system - he creates a system based on the players he has. Melo would get to jack up as many shots as he wants to, and Nelson might even let him carry a gun on the floor, if that's what it takes to make him happy.

It will be interesting to see how many players they can pack onto the Heat's bench. The roster size limit isn't the only problem they are going to run into:

A few years back, Portland supposedly had a super-team. The commentators all talked about how the Blazers had two complete starting 5's, plus the guys at the end of the bench would be starting on a lot of teams. Early in the season, they said that with all that talent it was hard to see how Portland was going to lose many games.

The first problem they had was finding the right 5-man rotations to be on the floor at any given time. Even with all that talent, it became obvious that "chemistry" really is a big deal. Just because players are talented at their spot, they don't necessarily complement each other on the floor. Then they started having problems because there weren't enough minutes to go around for so many talented players. They were all starters (or thought they were) so they all thought they could do the job better than the other players in their spots. They all claimed that they wanted whatever was best for the team, but they made it clear that they thought what was best was for them to be on the floor more. That team died a slow, miserable death.

I think that anyone else who signs with Miami is going to have to take a short paycheck. And if they don't get minutes, they aren't going to be doing a lot to improve their next contract either. We'll see how long some of these guys like riding the pine to try and get a ring.

Miami could only offer a vet. min contract anyhow. and at 35 Dampier knows he won't get much more at any place. having cashed about 100 million in his career (which is about twice or even three times as much as a player of his talent usually would make) the next contract isn't an issue for him either.
he would be an upgrade over Magloire and/or Howard, who the Heat likely would have to waive to create a roster spot for Dampier. but if they did, the question will be, what is the message to all other veterans who are willing to sign for min. money to become part of this team. Heat would win a small improvement at the 5th big spot, but might lose a lot of reputation, which could backfire down the road.
