Di Maria and Lavezzi can play on the midfield. Too many "disrupters" doesn't work for Argentina. Mascherano is good destroying but he doesn't have the foot and will Cambiasso has. I would swap them giving the starting job to the forementioned.

Why don't you guys just send hookers to Batistas room? Problem solved.
Bielsa left tired of the pressure, the situation i doubt he's eager to come back there.

Agree on DiMaria, plus he can play the wing where we have nobody to stretch the other team's defense. But Lavezzi is a striker in Napoli. He's a guy that lives inside the penalty area. Which is why he sucks as anything else.

Lavezzi plays as a wing in Napoli, tbh.
I think Arg needs a classic forward in the area too. Their lacking of presence in there.
I'd put a midfielder who can get the ball to Messi near the area and Huguain as forward. Take out Tevez and Lavezzi. I'd take out Banega too, the guy is a joke. I'd like to get Aguero in somewhere but I wouldn't know where..gee Argentina has too much talent.

Never, Bilardo is senile right now. I would take him out of the NT for good, I don't even know what role he is playing but he's in there contaminating the whole thing.
I think Bielsa would fit better, although I highly doubt he's up to take this team in this situation. He likes more taking control of long term deals.
Bianchi was never considered because of his relationship with Arg football board.
I guess Sabella is a good candidate.

We can't even get the ball that far... Tevez gets to the corner of the penalty area and start trying to do his thing. Messi is picking up the ball at midfield. Lavezzi runs the wing, then can't even center a ball.
That's why I'm saying you need a classic 10 like Pastore. He can pass the ball and play some back and forth passing with Messi. Then you do need somebody to finish the play. I don't know what this guys doing with 3 defensive midfielders out there.

That's my point precesily. A 10 who can get the ball up there. Pastore likely. I don't know if Aguero plays the 10. Although I think he's too forward minded to that position.

Bilardo was never sound. He's always been crazy as shit.
But he understands one thing that most other coaches do not: You build your team from the back. You start from a solid defense and go from there.
I keep asking for Pastore, but he won't hide the deficiencies we have at the back. The hope is we can score more than the other team. Unfortunately, unless we get a completely defensive minded coach we're not getting excellence at the back again.
I too wonder what Bielsa would do with this team.

Agüero is a finisher. Much like Higuain. He can run from behind if there are open spaces, but when it's tight, he's only good to finish plays.

So it seems I ddin't miss much while writing parts of my 10-page paper due Friday. Glad I didn't succumb to the temptation because I need every minute remaining until the due date to complete this project. LMFArgentina, LMFAFA, LMFATTHEDUMBESTSUBSIVEEVERSEEN. lol Batista, what a damn joke, elNono is completely correct, that guy has no capacity to coach this team. Any one of us here would put out a better team than he consistently does. I don't get his damn choices, especially with Lavezzi playing over Aguero, it's like he feels bad he needs to share the time. Fuck that, change the formation, put Masch in the back four (anywhere honestly) and play Pastore in an advanced attacking midfielder role. LMAO at this rate the team will never compete for a single world cup, completely disparaging this generation of firepower. The AFA will be forced to eventually name a new coach. Unfortunately, this won't be until 2 to 4 months before the 2014 World Cup.
lol, the defense is just goddamn atrocious. Save for Zanetti, all of the defenders flat out suck ass...they are pathetic. I don't get why there aren't more Argentine defenders that are faster than me with some ability on the ball, because right now I would give Milito, Demichelis, Otamendi, or any other defensive scrub imaginable a serious run for their money. Since this team is fucking up so bad compared to their potential, might as well try a completely new approach of using only athletic and/or skilled players:
Romero
Zanetti - Cambiasso - Mascherano - Clemente Rodriguez
Di Maria - Pastore - Aguero
Messi - Higuain - Tevez
High risk, high reward. At least the less athletic players are proven performers this way, not some completely average citizens. LMAO, most of the Argentine defenders are average Joses off the street.

Zero creativity on attack. These players are supposed to be great in 1 on 1 situations. Somebody needs to break down those defenses.
It´s really easy to play Arg today. You just wait on defense, and look for the mistake to counter-attack.
The D is a joke, but we already knew it.

while agree that argentina is mediocre in defense and GK and has been for several years now, mexico/chile/colombia/ecuador dont have any where near the amount of forwards argentina does. The problem is they are too similar, its foolish to play messi/aguero/tevez/di maria together because they are all small, fast 1v1 types- it works for barca because they have two playmakers. the closest we have to a true 9 is higuain/lavezzi/milito- the first two are really not that big, and while milito can play with his back to the goal he isnt much with his head either. We desperately need people who can go for a cross/corner, right now our best is Burdisso and he isnt very tall either. Against bolivia they had something like 16 corner kicks and werent even close to creating danger on any of them. freekicks is the same story, they are forced to shoot at goal because no one is going to win a header.
bielsa is not the solution. I respect him for his intelligence and work ethic, but he is a stubborn idealist, he flopped badly in 02 and though Chile improved with him as coach, they were really lucky in the WC and again Bielsa made some dubious decisions (like playing suazo who was coming from injury and basically useless the whole tournament). Bielsa would do a good job qualifying but crap out in elimination tournament be it the WC, CA, etc.
There are many more qualified argentine coaches: russo, bianchi, diaz, pekerman, hell even someone like cuper or caruso are more qualified than batista, and would get more out of these players. Since 06 argentina hasnt had the players to be a WC contender, but we still have enough to be a dark horse and certainly enough to win a copa america considering that brazil is rebuilding, paraguay hasnt been the same since cabañas got shot, etc. this is just a shameful display and it starts with the coach, there's a reason no one on earth plays a triple-5 midfield but this idiot thinks he is going to reinvent the wheel

Argentina's decline can easily be tracked back to a pretty bad generation of defenders and poor coaching. Half of the good coaches out there already burnt bridges with the federation's president, so they're no longer available.
All in all though, I thought Argentina had a good World Cup. At least for the most part they played 20x better than the shit they're showing now. I really think Batista is way over his head.
There´s no vocal leader on the field.

it's clear Arg weak point is the defense. That has no fix this competition. They will have to roll with what they got. Someone mentioned the Phoenix Suns. Yeah, they will have to play like the Suns and hope their offense will carry them.
Pastore El Flaco will come in and will give them a boost in the midfield. They should be able to beat any team except monster defenses like Brasil, Paraguay.

Not sure if I completely agree with the underlined portion..Tevez and Aguero are damn elite players, any country would love to have them available. And the Messi crap is bullshit, everyone who says he hasn't played to his abilities for Argentina are misleading. They imply it's he that hasn't brought it for the team, when really it's been no different than what he does at Barca. He misses easy goals for Barcelona too, but for that club it doesn't matter much because they always have the ball and create tons of scoring opportunities against any opponent. Messi still plays his ass off for Argentina, it's simply an overall inferior team to Barcelona (as is any other team, club or national, in the world). For Argentina, Messi has to do everything, he's the only one who can consistently advance the ball and has to drop way back to receive passes. It's no wonder he doesn't capitalize as much for his national team as he does for his club..by the time he gets in scoring range he's probably exhausted from everything he had to do to lead to the play.

Oh, ok. Got ya. The difference is completely due to the lack of Riquelme.
That team was better overall. The defense was stronger and the coaching was clearly WAY superior. Javier Saviola played well that tournament, as did many of the Argentina players. Messi and Tevez came off the bench and wreaked havoc immediately once on the pitch. They didn't score a ton of goals, but they put a lot of pressure on other teams. The team was overall more balanced, and I thought the team could have gone all the way, especially against Italy in the semis...but that German team always ends us. Argentina only gave up 3 goals in 5 games in that WC...and remember, their opponents were Holland, Ivory Coast (06 "group of death), Serbia & Montenegro, Mexico, and Germany.

Disagreed, Argentina and Brazil may have go down a bit but Southamerica as a whole is in great shape, I think this last WC showed that. Every CONMEBOL qualified to the knock out stage, 4 out of 5 got to the quarters and the only one that idn't lost to a southamerican team, Uruguay got to the semis and Paraguy was a penalty away of knocking out the eventual champs. Besides the Conmebol is the only federation that can say that every member of it is competitive.

No way, you can't compare the level of competition the U-17 is facing with the level of the Copa America. The U-17 squad would have lost by at least 3 goals against Chile, they're still kids, there's too much difference. Bealive me I know from experience...
I meant to answer this a while back...
Obviously their age/experience would factor against them (more than likely weighing against them defensively)... But seriously, outside of Gio Dos Santos (and the suspended players) the skeleton-crew U-22 Mexican squad that was left to play the tournament doesn't have much talent...
I would venture to say that a 5 or 6 players on the U-17 squad are far more talented and skilled than those on the U-22 team...
Off the top of my head:
Julio Gomez
Omar Briseño
Carlos Fierro
Espericueta
Giovanni Casillas
Carlos Guzman
Marco Gracias

That's probably true, but it's not the same to play the youngsters mixed with some veterans than to play a whole U-17 team. Too much physical and mental difference.

Costa Rica winning is good for us, now our future is in our hands (I don't know if that's a good thing though).
An no, we can draw and still qualify as one of the two best thirds, Italy style.
lmao Italy
lmao Argentina :depressed
The only way the future is in our hands is with a win.
If we tie, we depend on Bolivia not beating Colombia. If Bolivia beats Colombia, Colombia, Bolivia and Costa Rica all end up with 4 points and we're done.
If we tie, and Bolivia ties or loses, we're third with 3 points.
If we lose, we're done.
Fuck if argies are scared that C. Rica won tonight (even the press is as all well) then the situation is way bad.
As far as I know this Costa Rican team is U23, right? Argentina must win, is almost forced to it. If the first goal comes in the first 45 minutes, then they're saved.

lmao this post randomly inspired me to wiki Burdisso, and I learned this:
In 2009, Burdisso won his fourth consecutive Serie A title with Inter, making his personal title tally 19. This makes him the second-leading Argentine behind Alfredo di Stéfano, who has 21.
He must be the Derek Fisher of soccer. Those of you who've been following longer, did this clown consistently start for Inter? His current age and number of years spent in Inter lead me to believe he may have. His current playing does the opposite, however.
Anyway, it won't be long before Messi smokes both of their asses in championship count, which is a stupid thing to do in this sport anyway since many of the championships are very different and obviously a huge range in difficulty.

Actually, what I'm saying is that the best veterans on the U-22 + the best of the best of the U-17 would be a better team than just the U-22 team alone...
There is a bit of a distinction... there are plays I've seen Julio Gomez do that I've never seen before on the pitch... the spinning flick that he coupled with 'Ronaldinho's move' (the one foot mis-direction) comes to mind (I believe he did it in the first game this tourney)... I don't care if you're a 28 year old player... the play is so crafty, it would be hard to defend no matter the age....
Aside from talent... 3 of those aforementioned players also have way more game vision than anyone on the U-22 team (not named Dos Santos, obviously)...

Yes i'm sure that Gomez would've torn Chile's A team appart..He makes Alexis Sanchez look like bofo tbh. :lol
Anyway, regardless of what "U17" players you bring in you are not going to beat Chile's A team with the tactics put in place by Tena. Bunker all game hoping for a draw.. even Gio complained about it after the game saying they were too defensive. Mexico didn't even make a sub until around the 80th minute..Seems like Tena didn't even want to try to win it.
There are capable players on the team including Davila (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8tgl9ohQf4) who is the best player from mexico's U20 world cup team and Orrantia who can make things happen on the wings. Neither of them played. and don't forget that the 8 new players that were brought in never had any friendlies to get acclimated to team, they only had 1 or 2 practices together and you could see the lack of chemistry. Oh and the fact that Mexico wasted their 5 over age players.. i mean Marquez lugo? peralta? seriously? Someone please send hookers to their room asap. The only decent referzo mexico brought was Luis Michel.. Gio is 22 so he doesn't even count as an over age player..

I don´t agree. Burdisso is not a world class player ala those you mentioned, but he is serviceable.
Do you think all his coaches were/are stupid?
He´s been a pro for over 10 years. He deserves respect.
You are comparing him to some of the best defenders in the world, and he doesn´t belong in that group. But he is not a scrub either.
Was he lucky to play with some of the best? Yes.

Just mentioning who he teamed up with while at Inter. It's a lot easier to look 'serviceable' when you play with guys like that. At the end of the day, he has no business being the starter and seemingly best defender on a national team like Argentina. If he has to be in that role, then our defense won't be anything but mediocre. The guy is 30 already, and he isn't anything but average.

i'm kidding to show how bad batista is, that even caruso is better.
as for sitting messi... I would have done it against colombia, after he twisted his ankle. one, to protect his ankle and his ego, and two, to give the team a chance to play without him. The pressure is really getting to messi, and by extension the rest of the team. It was the ideal situation to sit him. Now, too much is at stake, even though we are playing a u23 team from a tiny country, at home :bang
supposedly batista is going to play messi further back next game with di maria, higuain and aguero up front. wasnt everyone harping on after the WC that messi had to be a forward?

Riquelme is an overrated, slow ass pile of shit, and has been for at least half a decade. He frustrated me a lot back in the 06 World Cup.
Riquelme is the best playmaker Argentina has had since Maradona retired. The team played much much better when he was in it, in 06 we were beating germany until he was subbed out, not to mention copa america finalists and olympic gold. You praise Pekerman and Bianchi, both love Riquelme since he was a kid, Pekerman in the u20 and u21 team and the 06 WC team, giving him the 10 and making him the star of his team, and Bianchi making him a star in Boca. He made the most assists in the 06 WC, and was the 2nd leading goalscorer of the 07 copa america (and the most for argentina). He won the libertadores in 07 as well, leading his team in goals and chosen MVP of the finals. He is done now because his body is shot, but to call him an overrated piece of shit shows you dont know jack. the teams biggest need is a playmaker, someone to control the pace and execute a freekick, ie Riquelme. HOPE, hope that pastore can play that role for us, otherwise we are screwed for at least a couple of years
This. Add a complete failure in Europe.
do all complete failures lead the spanish league in assists and lead a POS team to champions league semis? he wasnt a smash success in europe, but he was not a complete failure. complete failure is ariel ortega, but even as a failure in europe Ortega was a great player and if he were in his prime I'd start him over aguero/lavezzi/tevez/di maria in an instant.

Over and over he puts himself above the team, which is a failure. He always wanted special treatment. When he started demanding in Barça, they kicked him out. Villareal had to build a team around him to even sniff some degree of success. In Boca and the NT when he was on it, it was him or the highway.
He peaked in that intercontinental cup against Real Madrid, but he's always been very inconsistent when the bar was raised. In that World Cup Alvarez mentions, he flat out disappeared against Germany. In the last Copa America's final against Brazil, he was also a ghost. And that's his biggest problem. He just takes games off.

Ortega has always been a drunk. What's Roman excuse for the pecho frio?
the game against germany where he gave a perfect corner for the 1-0 lead (Ayala immediately runs to thank him for the goal), drew numerous fouls while controlling possession, until the coach took him out for a defensive mid (cambiasso) with 20 minutes to play and the team winning 1-0? if messi and tevez disappeared like that right now we'd have 6 points instead of 2.
the copa america 2007 final, where Riquelme was our best player for the tournament (we wont be getting to the final this year, btw), and brazil was lucky to get goal 5 minutes in that conditioned the rest of the match (btw, cambiasso lost the ball that led to the counter on that one). the one where riquelme hit a shot on the post 5 minutes after that goal, the one where brazil comitted 37 fouls (most of them near midcourt and on riquelme) and argentina had to send its central defenders to header for lack of a forward that could. the one where we had more shots, more possession, more corner kicks, more passes; the one where Messi, Tevez, Mascherano, and Cambiasso were also on the field, but without a man marker like Riquelme was...
if that is disappearing, then what is it that messi does for the NT? when Chile beat us for the first time in history, what was messi doing on the pitch? when bolivia beat us 6-1, where was messi, looking for an electric blanket? some heat rub? how about when we needed to beat Peru and Uruguay to get to the WC, what did he do then? did he make an assist, hit a post, involve himself in a goal?
oh thats right, when Argentina loses with messi as its leader, against teams it has never lost against or in ways that it never has before, it is the coaches fault, but when argentina loses to Germany or Brazil with Riquelme as the leader- even if the team was winning and lost after he was subbed out- its riquelme's fault...
and :lol at having more issue with riquelme being a diva than with ortega being a drunk. Ortega is three thousand times the fuck up Riquelme is. Saying Riquelme was a failure in europe was a ridiculous overstatement, whether you own up to it or not is your problem.
ps: in this post i'm not saying riquelme is better than messi. I'm merely pointing out the ridiculous double standard ElNono is using. just say you dont like Riquelme, no problem. but to call him a failure in europe and blame the 06 WC and 07 CA losses on him is bullshit, unless you are willing to hold Messi to the same standard.

I'm glad you got that off your chest... :lol
Messi never asked or acted like he wanted to be the leader of anything. And therein lies the difference. Riquelme always played in the national team (or anywhere else) like he was the owner of the ball. What he says goes, or GTFO. He talked shit about teammates, and he got coaches fired.
And I didn't say Roman didn't play well that World Cup or Copa America. The problem is that due to his diva attitude, and the fact that he only gives a shit when the team is built specifically around him, if he dissappears, the team is done. Which is exactly what happened both times. I'm on record saying Batista or whoever would be making the same mistake if they make Argentina Messi-dependent.
Last, I don't excuse Ortega for being a drunk that wasted his talent. He's a fuckup. Likewise, I don't excuse Riquelme for being a pecho frio diva. He is what he is, and if he would've shown the same talent without the stupid attitude, he probably would be 10x the player he is, and succeeded 10x than he did.

As a player, they are different. Messi is way better. But Riquelme at his peak was a damn good player.
The last 10 Argentina had.
About the 2006 WC:
Arg lost to Germany due to stupid subs by Pekerman.
Arg was up 1-0 he subs for........Julio Cruz. LMFAO.
Germany was being kicked out. It was a perfect time to put Messi in there for counterattack, and Pekerman had a brain fart.
And the germans were good, btw. Not trying to take anything away from them.
Anyway, I don't blame Messi. The whole team is playing like shit right now.
Honestly, I don't know how to fix such a mess, but I'll start by trying Pastore and Higuain as starters instead of Cambiasso and Lavezzi.

If Bolivia would have won, we could beat Costa Rica and still not qualify with a draw between Colombia and Bolivia. That's why I said the Costa Rica win benefited us.

pps: Cue a DAF86 meltdown for even suggesting that Messi can be compared to Riquelme.
:lol I wasn't going to say anything but since you ask for me...
Riquelme is the most overrated Argie player of all time. I'm not saying he wasn't great, I loved him when he was an up and comer in Boca but then he got so overrated by fans that I started to grow some feelings against him, his little diva bitch attitude helps increase those feelings too.
This guy was voted the "best player after Maradona" in Argentina. No, no "the best Argentinian player after Maradona", the best period. Yeah, you heard right, people in Argentina people voted him ahead of Messi, Zidane, Ronaldo, Cruyff, Pele, etc. That's how overrated he is.
Riquelme nowadays can't play two games in a row without getting injured and there's still people that said that he is the best player in the World, yeah with a straight face and all.
The same fans that like to rag on Messi for never doing anything with the national team want Riquelme on the team like if he has ever done anything with Argentina's shirt. For big part of his prime Riquelme wasn't even considered to be on the NT squad. Then Pekerman got along and gave him a vital role. Where let's be honest he didn't shine, that's why Pekerman (one of Riquelme's biggest fans) subbed him out on the most important game of the tournament for Argentina.
And don't even get me started on his attitude issues, he had problems everywhere he went and even Basile (another Riquelme defender) said that he was a strange guy and denied Riquelme's comments about them beign friends.
In conclusion, Riquelme was a very good player but nowhere close to what some fans in Argentina think of him
P/S: Ortega >> Riquelme on the NT.

You gotta be shittin me.... it's about time. If the rumor is true, I'm quite surprised Batista is changing the formation, I thought the change would only be in the players, using Higuain and Aguero, finally.
tbh, this is still a FAIL in the long run, IMO. It probably be enough to beat Costa Rica and an improvement over playing 3 defensive midfielders, but as seen in the World Cup, Messi isn't a playmaker. That boat has already sailed.
There's no magic wand or single player that's going to fix everything, but Messi should play upfront, and we've a fairly talented playmaker in Pastore on the bench.
If I had to modify that lineup from midfield and up, I would go with this:
Romero
Zabaleta Burdisso Milito Zanetti
Mascherano (Gago or Cambiasso)
Messi Pastore DiMaria
Higuain
Another rumor today says Banega will be dropped for Gago...

Higuain missed a bunch of easy looks today but don't understate the fact that he got those looks. He's always playing in the line of the last defender, sprinting to get those looks. If Tevez would have played instead of him, he would have gone down to the miedfield instead of staying in the box, the presence of a true centerforward helped create all those chances. Don't overlook the art of "beign there".

Messi has been the best "assister" in the Spanish league this season and he always makes at least two or three of those passes where he leaves a man wide open. He's one of the best playmakers in the world.

I call a playmaker a true number 10. Like Beto Alonso, Aimar, Bochini, Riquelme... guys that can come from the middle and organize the offense.
Messi is a forward, he's just very unselfish, which is great. I'm not complaining, I just think he's more of the style of Franchescoli or Del Piero that can finish just as easily as they can assist.

People say that Messi isn't a playmaker 'cause he plays better as a forward but he's so talented that he can play anywhere (offensively), let me ask you something: what did those guys you named make better than Messi (other than set pieces)?
have you ever seen Riquelme, Aimar and all those guys get the ball in miedfield, get past two or three defenders, make a "through" pass and create plays as often as Messi does?
Messi as a playmaker is better than most "playmakers", the thing is he plays better as a forward but seeing as we have forwards to spare and lack "playmakers" I'm OK with playing Lio in that role.

Messi as a playmaker is better than most "playmakers", the thing is he plays better as a forward but seeing as we have forwards to spare and lack "playmakers" I'm OK with playing Lio in that role.
The problem I have with him in that role is twofold:
1) He has to start from behind, and if they throw two or three guys at him and slow him down, our offense becomes completely stale. See: the game against Colombia.
2) I rather he get the ball closer to the penalty area, and make the passes there. Completely agree he's a better forward. We have guys to move the ball there. Gago has shown today he can do it. Di Maria, even though he's a mess with the ball, can do it too. He has a second gear. I think Pastore is another guy that you can play there and he can be a great associate for Messi in that part of the pitch.
Basically, it's such a huge role that I don't want everything on Messi alone creating the opportunities. I think he'll make the right pass anyways if he gets the ball more upfront.

Gago Mascherano Di Maria
Messi Higuain Aguero
I would have played:
Romero
Zabaleta Burdisso Milito Zanetti
Gago Mascherano
Aguero Messi Di maria
Higuain
It's a waste to have Messi on a side, yeah I know that Messi then moves wherever he wants but that leaves a hole on the right wing of Argentina.
And Di Maria's greatest asset is his speed, he needs to play on the wing to take advantage of that.
