I can see them luck out in Penalties but Argentina is local and also is a great team, Uruguay is not as good as the WC results and Argentina (undefeated BTW) is not bad as y'all are describing it...

I think Argentina depends on lucking out that Batista screws up and puts a competitive team out there, instead of playing a triple-5 or quadruple-5 (Mascherano, Banega, Cambiasso, Biglia crofl). I liked the team that played against CR, we'll see if it sticks.
Our defense is pathetic. The only reason there has been no 'debacles' is because Romero has been superman so far and Colombia screwed up, but that ain't going to last. Suarez can beat Burdiso AND Milito one-on-one... same with Forlan. We have Zanetti playing with his foot changed on the left. It's a disaster.

Argentina and Brazil would still dominate a combined confederation. The ones that would suffer from that unification would be Mexico and the US 'cause they wouln't be so sure to qualify for the WC as they're right now.
I would also like to see this happening but I reckon there're some logistic problems, travelling from Argentina to Canada isn't the same as to travel from France to Greece.

+1
Mexico has played the last 7 Copa America and has won none.
Mexican teams have been playing the Libertadores for years now and have won none.
Mexican teams have been playing the Sudamericana for years now and have won 1 with 8 southamericans in the first team.
Mexico will suffer A LOT if the confederation are joined.

Ignoring the fact that
A. this is the U22 team and most of them never played for NT before.
B. 8 players suspended and replaced days before Mexico's first game
I would say they did fairly well considering the circumstances. Although not happy about the result of course, I wasn't expecting much from this team. Look at the first couple of pages before the tourney even started i said mexico was fucked.

Not only Mexico, Costa Rica too. CONCACAF would only let either team participate in Copa America if they sent their u23 teams.
CONCACAF: In an effort to maintain the luster on the Gold Cup:lol, CONCACAF allowed Mexico to participate in next year’s Copa America, provided that the team is a U23 edition, plus 5 senior squad members.

Given the seniors they sent to that squad.. clearly they knew they weren't going to contend.. I think the only good thing that could have come out of this tournament, would've been if Jonathan Dos Santos and Marco Fabian would've played.. They need the experience, and it would've been interesting to see how they would have competed.. but after the prostitute scandal.. that all went down the drain, Gio can't do shit by himself.

tbh, World Cup >>>>>>>>>> WC qualifiers >>>>>>> Euro Cup >>> Copa America
Copa America has been a joke of a competition. There were 2 great teams, 6 mediocre teams, and 2 shit teams always the same. Mexico came in and became just another one of the mediocre teams.
Hopefully this is changing with this copa but still to early too tell. We really don't know if the mediocre teams are finally catching up or it's just the 2 great teams slacking.
I don't know about Mexico, but all South American National Teams treat Copa America as a pre-season to the World Cup Qualifiers. The WC qualifiers is where teams really bring their A game.

how about the fact that mexico reaches the semis or finals of copa america on a consistent basis when they take their A team? or the huge home field advantage they'd have at the Azteca? ecuador made it to like 3 WCs simply winning at home bc of the elevation in quito, mexico's HFA would be even bigger than ecuador's.
brazil and arg are locks, and mexico would be right alongside paraguay as teams that would reach the WC 7-8 times out of 10...the other teams would alternate missing WCs depending on how good their current generations are.

you cannot compare copa america to a wc qualifier. mexico would have to visit 10 countries and play each country as local. I would be surprised if they even get 3-4 wins from those. They might "barely" qualify. But that is very far from being a lock and easily qualifify.
vato loco
07-15-2011, 10:49 AM
it's the exact same teams so yes while not identical they're comparable, mexico has proven they can hold their own against conmebol competition. and that's all they would have to do is get a couple away wins+ties and hold serve at home.
it would be harder than concacaf qualifiers for sure but mexico would still qualify on a consistent basis in conmebol, very similar to what paraguay has been the doing the last two decades.

bolivia is shit bro, elevation and HFA advantage can only help u so much...u need some quality players too which they don't have. same with peru. there's a reason they always finish in the bottom during qualifiers. venzuela is making strides but they're a baseball first country so i don't think we'll ever see them in WCs consistently, maybe one here or there.

colombia, chile-inconsistent, a good generation pops up every now and then
ecuador-peaked, seem to have exploited quito's elevation to it's fullest
mexico is consistent, altho never elite they have a history of maintaining the same solid level (reaching round of 16 in WC like the past six/seven WCs)...very similar to paraguay.

DiMaria and Suarez take 1st prize in flopping in the 1st half, tbh.
And I expect every free kick to take no less than 5 mins for Uruguay in the 2nd half.

And yes, our defense is pathetic... nothing new there. There's really nothing better than Burdisso and Milito?
This. I'm in awe at how incredibly incompetent our defense is at practically everything.

screwed by the refs yet again... it's no business for the CONMEBOL to have Uruguay oust ARG tbh
Sorry Uru but Perez was rightly sent off, in fact he should have been sent off in the first foul he comitted but the ref thought it was too soon to show a red card.

We do our share of flopping (Suarez especially) but watching Di Maria and Gago do it makes me want to puke... Rodriguez won't probably be allowed to play, last time he did against ARG he broke Heinze's jaw and that cost him his WC roster spot because Tabarez doesn't tolerate that...

Great game tbh. With Masche gone is all about heart now... proud of what the boys did in regulation time... regardless of who wins this, it was a great match that i just hope it doesnt get ruined by a penalty shootout, we have been ousted in such fashion on the last two copa america's...
