Leak suggests UN agency self-censors on climate crisis after US pressure
International Organization for Migration apparently amends programme documentation to avoid conflict with US ‘political sensitivities’
the US state department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM) told the agency documents related to
programme activities it funds “must not be in conflict with current [US government] political sensitivities”.
Sensitivities include the
climate crisis,
sustainable development goals,
the global compact for migration (https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/dec/10/un-states-agree-historic-global-deal-to-manage-refugee-crisis)and
“anything that seems at odds with the administration’s take on US domestic/foreign issues”, the official wrote in the email.
“Documents related to programme activities, especially those that will be published online, may require prior review and approval by the donor,” they went on, requesting that colleagues use “discretion” and share relevant documents “in enough time to make any necessary adjustments in coordination with PRM”.
The email’s author noted that
“PRM is very willing to cut funding in areas that it deems are not in line with US foreign policy objectives”,
and asked that the substance of the email be conveyed by regional coordinators “to all country focal points”.

Global Temperature Rise
The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere.4 Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years, with the five warmest years on record taking place since 2010. Not only was 2016 the warmest year on record, but eight of the 12 months that make up the year — from January through September, with the exception of June — were the warmest on record for those respective months. 5

Warming Oceans
The oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat, with the top 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) of ocean showing warming of more than 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969.
-------------------------------------------
The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass.
Data from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment show Greenland lost an average of 286 billion tons of ice per year between 1993 and 2016, while Antarctica lost about 127 billion tons of ice per year during the same time period. The rate of Antarctica ice mass loss has tripled in the last decade.7
-----------------------------------------------------
Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world — including in the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alaska and Africa.8
-----------------------------------------------------------
Decreased Snow Cover
Satellite observations reveal that the amount of spring snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere has decreased over the past five decades and that the snow is melting earlier.9
---------------------------------------------------------
Sea Level Rise
Global sea level rose about 8 inches in the last century. The rate in the last two decades, however, is nearly double that of the last century and is accelerating slightly every year.10
-------------------------------------------------------
Declining Arctic Sea Ice
Both the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly over the last several decades.11
-----------------------------------------------------------
Extreme Events
The number of record high temperature events in the United States has been increasing, while the number of record low temperature events has been decreasing, since 1950. The U.S. has also witnessed increasing numbers of intense rainfall events.12
----------------------------------------------------------
Ocean Acidification
Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by about 30 percent.13,14 This increase is the result of humans emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and hence more being absorbed into the oceans. The amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the upper layer of the oceans is increasing by about 2 billion tons per year.15,16

Yes it is their world to inherit, but sticking with the science is the best way imo.
And because some people dont have a clue how science works in this country... Its really gonna take industry leaders imo.
It would also be advisable to not show the worst case models and then exaggerate them.
These petroleum nuts think this is like the 70s gas crisis. Or they have no fckn clue that we have already put a large dent into big climate problems like acid rain, upper level ozone depletion (less so but still pretty amazing).
This one will be tougher though.
I guess putting it off like the deficit is not advisable either as when it gets cold this winter (go figure), everything will be okay again.
Im not entirely sure how to get through to people who dont really know what is going on. You wont change the granite heads, as they link it to a guy chaining himself to a tree.

Many conspiracy theorists believe that climate change is a hoax and is used as a manipulation tool for depopulation and to implement a carbon tax via Agenda 30 (formerly known as Agenda 21). To control us.
Even if the conspiracy theories turn out to be true/false doesn't mean we should keep reproducing like rabbits straining our natural resources. Every baby born will potentially require a new car, new phone and new house.
Overpopulation is a taboo subject that most people just like to brush aside. Our demands and consumerism is destroying our planet more than carbon dioxide tbh.

Enslavement of agriculture world-wide to annual purchases sterile GMO seeds and their required poisons is the goal of GMO industry.
Many regions of the planet are already water-stressed. Drought is one of the drivers of the Northern Triangle people to USA. Drough started the Syrian civil war.

This needs to be an agreed and collective effort. Our human evolutionary instincts tells us "if I don't eat that bacon someone else will." Until we all agree to train our minds, adapt and willingly change our lifestyles like not have too many kids, lower our meat consumption, etc. then nothing will ever be accomplished and our natural resources will be depleted.
Meat consumption requires farmland and agriculture. Farmland and agriculture is the biggest cause of deforestation. Maybe the elites know that we will not change our lifestyles voluntarily so they trying to push this Agenda 30 on us? Depopulation?

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos unveils a sweeping new plan to tackle climate change.
Bezos says Amazon is committed to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement 10 years early.
As part of the plan, Amazon has agreed to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vans from vehicle manufacturer Rivian.
Bezos expects 80% of Amazon’s energy use to come from renewable sources by 2024, before transitioning to zero emissions by 2030.

methane is a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. and when looking at realistic ways to scale back greenhouse gases, its probably a lot easier to ween us off our beef dependance than car dependence, for example. its an achievable goal that will make a difference, tbh, which is why it makes sense to focus there

no need to kill any off. there's pretty good evidence that naturally occurruing methane production is virtually completely offset by natural methane sinks. at this point i'm content to start with livestock farming.
If we were all vegan, humans would produce much more methane. :lol
any increase would be negligible compared to the amount we'd decrease from livestock farming. we're simply different creatures with different digestive systems. vegans aren't going to live off grass. its the microbes that help cows digest grass which are creating the methane.
And all that methane from permafrost melt -- it's from vegetation that predates the industrial revolution. It's like the earth's climate changed or something. No vehicles required.
nobody ever said that methane/CO2 can only come from artificial sources. this is a nonstop strawman i hear from this crowd. "HURR DURR THERE WERE NO SUV'S MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO"
there is an existing cycle where methane is created by some sources and absorbed by others (see the very top of my response here, to snakeboy). consider pouring water from a faucet into a pasta strainer. sure you can keep filling water, but the strainer also keeps releasing. now if instead of your sink faucet, you start dumping 5 gallon buckets of water into the pasta strainer, it will overflow, because you are grossly changing one side of the equation.
the methane being exposed from permafrost is a huge deal. as stated before, methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. it hasn't been the primary culprit because methane emission totals pale in comparison to CO2 emissions. but if we start getting big increases in methane production from soil exposed beneath permafrost, that's a big deal (regardless of how that methane was originally produced). we are still the ones causing the permafrost to give way to the methane emissions, further tilting the balance (aka positive feedback loop)

The timeline.
Climate is not changing———> climate can change and has done so *enter iceages*—————> Climate is changing————> climate is changing rapidly but has done so in the past *enter volcanoes* —————> climate is changing but our role is minimal——————-> climate is changing rapidly and we do contribute *enter nothing we can do now*
methane production becomes cow farting therefore draining off methane into the air at wells is just fine.
Completely ignore how we now understand and have disrupted acid rain and Ozone depletion thereby changing the climate (albeit on a smaller scale). Putting scrubbers in coal burning plants and limiting CFCs were horrible drags on the economy.
Oh.
The blue team has its record on ignoring issues as well as overstating them. Some press does have a penchant for taking worse case models and intensifying them. Accomplished by both teams.

And all that methane from permafrost melt -- it's from vegetation that predates the industrial revolution. It's like the earth's climate changed or something. No vehicles required.
This is one of those " light switch" processes I have been trying to explain to you for a decade. Of course it has nothing to do with vehicles, but if the warming we have caused warms that the millions of squarebmile of permafrost you get a sudden massive warming feedback loop.
30 degrees... No problem.

This is the kind of thing I meant when I said better to not change things substantially without knowing the consequences.

Give me all your money, the world is at an end.
We most likely will survive this. Its gonna cost a lot of money as ariable land changes place (farming becomes erratic) and seashores get redefined.
Starvation and water shortages more likely as existing infrastructure for moving food and water is not gonna handle it.

no need to kill any off. there's pretty good evidence that naturally occurruing methane production is virtually completely offset by natural methane sinks. at this point i'm content to start with livestock farming.

I would simply point to the title of the thread at this point. You should assume that pseudoscientific arguments will be the norm.
The beginning of this thread in 2010- 2015 or so were desperate attempts by Darrins/WC to prove "no warming" in various flawed ways. More data keeps piling up showing warming.
Then it became a conspiracy theory. "They are doing it for the money/power", with "they" being climate scientists, as if a trillion dollar fossil fuel industry wouldn't fight tooth and nail to show its product wasn't harmful, but greedy scientists were fooling everybody.
Now... it isn't even that. It is just mockery. Thornberg, farting cows, Gore, anything to distract.
The only good thing is that as we move into more and more and more billion dollar + weather events, such as never before seen rain events on the Texas coast where the rain is measured in FEET, the kinds of denial will get harder to do, and plainer to see who is paying for it.
Kids aren't stupid, and if you want to tie your political party to a virulently anti-science movement, that will have a cost.

We don't have naturally occurring populations of really any ruminants. This is what I'm asking you. After we kill all the cows do we let these populations return to natural levels? There's going to be a lot of open grasslands so what do we do?

Europe bucks global deforestation trend
Around the world, forests are shrinking due to deforestation, urban development and climate change, but in Europe that trend has been reversed.
Large areas of the continent have seen a forest boom that means today more than two-fifths of Europe is tree-covered. Between 1990 and 2015, the area covered by forests and woodlands increased by 90,000 square kilometres - an area roughly the size of Portugal.
https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/07/forest-europe-environment/
Simply let the forests grow back over the grasslands used for grazing and cattle raising. (hint: Where do trees get their mass from?)
Cows are one part of the equation. We have to do a lot of things at once, not the least of which is trimming CO2 from industrial processes, as well as transportation.
All of which can be done with large scale renewables, such as eliminating the bessemer process in steel production for an anodic/diodic one, similar to how aluminum is processed.

you want people to be more healthy? cutting meat isn't the angle i'd take but whatever. i'd get rid of all the sugar in our diets like soda, candy, etc... i'd lay claim that all that shit is what's making our obesity ordeal get bigger, no pun intended.

Young People Lead Millions To Protest Global Inaction On Climate Change
Millions of young people raised their voices at protests around the world Friday in a massive display meant to demand urgent action on climate change. Scores of students missed school to take part, some joined by teachers and parents.
Some of the first rallies began in Australia, and then spread from Pacific islands to India and Turkey and across Europe, as students kicked off what organizers were calling a Global Climate Strike.
In the U.S., where more than 800 marches were planned, thousands of young people are absent from classrooms so they can carry signs, march and shout slogans calling for a new approach to energy and emissions.

Why 10,000 farmers have gotten behind the Green New Deal
A coalition that unites farmers and ranchers behind the Green New Deal hopes to set a new tone for how the agriculture sector relates to policy solutions to address the climate crisis, and ensure farmers have a voice in the debate.
Farmers and Ranchers for the Green New Deal (GND) officially launched on Wednesday with a press conference at the Capitol and a letter to Congress (https://us.netdonor.net/page/9832/petition/1) urging members to support the GND resolution.

Context my brother, context. No one here is trying to convince anyone that Trump’s age, or the passion with which he delivers his speeches is the basis for the truth of the message (or lack thereof).
This is another case of the left picking up another poster child (literally) to drum up their narratives while trying to elicit our empathetic emotions. The Parkland High School kid also comes to mind. Meanwhile that Catholic school kid that grinned at a right-to-life march - oh yeah, he’s a “racist, patriarchal bigot”.
It won’t surprise me to see Greta land some invites to prime time talk shows, or late night shows over the next few weeks. Maybe a lucrative book deal. That’s how the globalist elites pay their spokespeople from the shadows - they simply use their media outlets/Hollywood to do it in the open. Or does no one question how someone like AOC goes from being a bartender one day to amassing personal wealth over 15 million dollars in a little less than two years? So the hypocrisy of her rallying cry against the “wealthy” while she herself partakes of the joys of her own newfound wealth - yeah, that message should fall on deaf ears. But no, history shows us that Marxist leaders were always well off financially.

The Manufacturing of Greta Thunberg - For Consent: The Political Economy of the Non-Profit Industrial Complex - - > (http://www.wrongkindofgreen.org/2019/01/17/the-manufacturing-of-greta-thunberg-for-consent-the-political-economy-of-the-non-profit-industrial-complex/)
In ACT I, I disclose that Greta Thunberg, the current child prodigy and face of the youth movement to combat climate change, serves as special youth advisor and trustee to the burgeoning mainstream tech start-up, We Don’t Have Time. I then explore the ambitions behind the tech company We Don’t Have Time.
In ACT II, I illustrate how today’s youth are the sacrificial lambs for the ruling elite. Also in this act I introduce the board members of and advisors to We Don’t Have Time. I explore the leadership in the nascent We Don’t Have Time and the partnerships between the well-established corporate environmental entities: Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, 350.org, Avaaz, Global Utmaning (Global Challenge), the World Bank, and the World Economic Forum (WEF).
In ACT III, I deconstruct how Al Gore and the planet’s most powerful capitalists are behind today’s manufactured youth movements and why. I explore the We Don’t Have Time/Thunberg connections to Our Revolution, the Sanders Institute, This Is Zero Hour, the Sunrise Movement and the Green New Deal. I also touch upon Thunberg’s famous family. In particular, Thunberg’s celebrity mother, Malena Ernman (WWF Environmental Hero of the Year 2017) and her August 2018 book launch. I then explore the generous media attention afforded to Thunberg in both May and April of 2018 by SvD, one of Sweden’s largest newspapers.

and yet, nothing effective is being done
‘I would like people to panic’ –
Top scientist unveils equation showing world in climate emergency
the world is ‘deep in a climate emergency’
To calculate risk,
he used the insurance industry’s approach of multiplying the amount of damage done by the probability of the event.
For urgency,
he followed the model used by air traffic controllers, which divides the time needed to react by time left for intervention.
‘If we go into a runaway climate effect,
the damage may be between €100 trillion and the loss of civilisation,’ he said.
‘The probability, I would say, is about 10% that this is going to happen.
And when it comes to the urgency of decarbonising society and keeping the forests alive,
we need at least 20 years.
We have only 30 years left to do this.
‘It simply means that we are in a deep state of climate emergency.
If you trust the numbers from science.’

Jeez. Imagine if a government forced an 11 year old girl to be pregnant with her father's child. I bet you would ostracize her and make her into a pariah for wanting to terminate the pregnancy, hypocrite.
For the umpteenth time, termination of an abortion due to the risk posed to the mother’s health has always been legal (most everywhere). It has literally been performed at the judgement of the doctor based on medical need throughout the modern era.
Your straw man deflects from the primary reason why most on "the Right" reject the wanton and indiscriminate use of abortion. MURDER should not be a contraceptive option when other choices are available. Over 60 million babies have been murdered in the USA since Roe vs Wade proliferated the use of the procedure. Only the tiniest smidgeon of a fraction of that number would be categorized as falling into the subset of terminations associated with preteen incest. I reject your hypocrite label given the utter and deliberate disregard for the primary reason (by far) why abortions occur in this country: CONVENIENCE. The callousness with which you dismiss the significance of this argument is the very reason why you have zero room to parade yourself as someone that lobbies for the lives of children. Your talk of mental gymnastics is the true hypocrisy here.
If you want to believe that Greta isn’t another paid spokesperson that’s your naïve prerogative. Silencing Science: Trump Campaign Tries To Quash Anthropogenic Connection To Climate Crisis
Maria Caffrey, PhD (https://colorado.academia.edu/MariaCaffrey), of the University of Colorado, Boulder, who works with the US Park Service.
She did a four-year study of the potential impact of climate crisis on 118 national parks in 2030, 2050, and 2100.
It was finished in late 2016 just before Donald Trump ascended to the presidency (after losing the vote by nearly 3,000,000 votes).Dr. Caffrey’s report went through 18 revisions.
The word “anthropogenic” was removed to prevent the link between humans and climate crisis from being made in the report.
Two years passed to delay the report.
In the end, even while
under pressure from three government officials that she might lose her job, and
maybe some of her co-workers could lose their jobs,
Dr. Caffrey stuck to her principles, and the report was released in a version that was “uncensored.”In the course of this ordeal, Dr. Caffrey said
“she was instructed that the Park Service works for Trump and not the American people.“
Columbia University runs a silencing science tracking website (http://columbiaclimatelaw.com/resources/silencing-science-tracker) that has hundreds of examples of cases
when climate crisis science has been silenced or self-censored in federal or state cases

Meet the Money Behind The Climate Denial Movement
Nearly a billion dollars a year is flowing into the organized climate change counter-movement
it's not “for some reason” that
people are confused.
There's a very obvious reason.
There is a very well-funded, well-orchestrated climate change-denial movement,
one funded by powerful people with very deep pockets.
In a new and incredibly thorough study (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10584-013-1018-7%20), Drexel University sociologist Robert Brulle (http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~brullerj/%20)took a deep dive into the financial structure of the climate deniers, to see who is holding the purse strings (http://www.drexel.edu/~/media/Files/now/pdfs/Institutionalizing%20Delay%20-%20Climatic%20Change.ashx).
According to Brulle's research (http://www.drexel.edu/~/media/Files/now/pdfs/Institutionalizing%20Delay%20-%20Climatic%20Change.ashx),
the 91 think tanks and advocacy organizations and trade associations that make up the American climate denial industry
pull down just shy of a billion dollars each year (http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2013/dec/20/conservative-groups-1bn-against-climate-change),
money used to lobby or sway public opinion on climate change and other
issues.
“The anti-climate effort has been largely underwritten by conservative billionaires,” ...“often working through secretive funding networks.
They have displaced corporations as the prime supporters of 91 think tanks, advocacy groups and industry associations which have worked to block action on climate change.”

Report shows ‘stunning and dramatic’ scenes of thawing permafrost in Siberia that ‘leaves millions on unstable ground’
“Rivers are rising and running faster, and entire neighborhoods are falling into them.”
Rising global temperatures from human activity are causing the world’s permafrost—
a mix of soil, rocks, and sand that remains frozen for two or more consecutive years—
to thaw and release (https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/04/16/thawing-permafrost-emitting-higher-levels-potent-greenhouse-gas-previously-thought) greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere, further warming the planet.
“the permafrost that once sustained farming—and upon which villages and cities are built—is in the midst of a great thaw, blanketing the region with swamps, lakes, and odd bubbles of earth that render the land virtually useless.”

‘This is truly terrifying’: Scientists discover ocean waters ‘boiling with methane’ in Arctic
they found a 50-square-foot area of the East Siberian Sea “boiling with methane bubbles.”
“This is the most powerful seep I have ever been able to observe,” lead scientist Igor Semiletov said Monday, using a term for methane gas bubbling up from the seafloor to the surface.
“No one has ever recorded anything similar.”
Compared with carbon dioxide, methane has a shorter lifetime in the atmosphere
but is better at trapping radiation, so
methane’s impact is more than 25 times greater than that of carbon dioxide over a 100-year period
Experts are increasingly concerned about the consequences of thawing permafrost that is located both beneath land and water in the planet’s coldest regions.
Last week, the Washington Post reported on
“stunning and dramatic” scenes from a region of Eastern Siberia where “sections of many older, wooden buildings already sag toward the ground—
rendered uninhabitable by the unevenly thawing earth,” and “rivers are rising and running faster,”
sweeping away entire neighborhoods.
https://www.rawstory.com/2019/10/this-is-truly-terrifying-scientists-discover-ocean-waters-boiling-with-methane-in-arctic/?utm_source=&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=1690&recip_id=298460&list_id=1 (https://www.rawstory.com/2019/10/this-is-truly-terrifying-scientists-discover-ocean-waters-boiling-with-methane-in-arctic/?utm_source=&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=1690&recip_id=298460&list_id=1)
Then add in the underreported / unmonitored methane from oil/gas extraction, etc, etc, etc.

Dinosaurs became extinct from the same horrifying conditions plaguing our oceans
“We could very easily have something more extreme … so this should be something that is yes, horrifying to us.”
the first direct evidence that the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction was caused in part by a decrease in the oceans' pH levels.
This likely happened because the asteroid impact led to sulfur-rich rocks creating acid rain, which went into the ocean and disrupted its ecosystem.
What is alarming is that acidification is currently happening in the planet’s oceans today,
even without an asteroid to disrupt the environment because of carbon dioxide emissions.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA (https://www.noaa.gov/education/resource-collections/ocean-coasts-education-resources/ocean-acidification)),
over the last 200 years — since the industrial revolution — the pH of the ocean surface has fallen by 0.1 pH units.
Based on the current rate of carbon dioxide levels,
evidence suggest that the ocean could be 150 percent more acidic by the end of the century,
according to NOAA, “resulting in a pH that the oceans haven’t experienced for more than 20 million years.”
Planavsky said the latest evidence from the study gives us insight into what will be happening in the future if carbon emissions continue to rise.
The short-term event destabilized and altered the structure of ecosystems for millions of years, so this should be something that is yes, horrifying to us.
https://www.salon.com/2019/10/22/dinosaurs-extinction-acidic-oceans-ph-asteroid/ (https://www.salon.com/2019/10/22/dinosaurs-extinction-acidic-oceans-ph-asteroid/)
