that was Splits. their offense is fine, they just need to work quicker out of the gun
They don't need to work quicker out of the gun, what theyre doing is fine. If I'm Memphis I would want the ball out of Durant's hands as much as possible, too. It's all strategy. You speed up your sets, and you end up in a foot race with the most athletic team in the league. Slow it down, and grind it out.
He started off well but when they stopped falling, he did not stop shooting.
I like the kid but that loss was on him. Sure he got wise when Durant was hot but should not of taken that long.
I dont mind him being aggressive, he needs to be.
Get the team off to a good start by scoring? Sure. But once you suck in that defense you have to look for the 2nd best player in the NBA.
Chuck called it at half-time. He normally says dumb shit but Barkley knew that was the wrong course ...
Also part of their strategy. Did you see how much they were sagging off him on the 3 point line? Daring him to shoot? and he fell for it, like the fool he is. And there's nary a thing Scotty, or Durbeta can do about it. he is the true alpha on the team.
Tee hee
let us proceed...
Look at Kevin in this clip, he's seen this movie too many times. But ah, Kendrick Perkins to the rescue.

They're an incredibly resilient team. They had an answer for every haymaker OKC threw at them. Unlike the Spurs, these niggas show no fear of these methheads, or their refs. Theyre just gonna keep grinding. Nothing about tonight was fluky or unsustainable for Memphis. What was fluky was Kevin Durant hitting a 3 pointer while falling out of bounds, and getting a bs call. What was fluky was Conley going 1/2 at the line. That won't happen when the entire meth enraged OKC crowd isn't yelling at him.
The only thing that isn't sustainable was the fair officiating tbh
Pop is always preaching dont reach show your hands dont foul, and this is what the refs are accustomed to, so when the spurs do reach or try to body, they get whistled for it.
Mem is like eff that, I'm getting up in your grill from tip off, and the refs adjust their whistles to it because they can't foul everyone out in the first quarter. The thunder do this to the spurs too.
But pop is too busy trying to keep people off the free throw line. While that works against some teams (MIA), it actually back fires against teams like OKC because you get called for the foul anyway. So not only are you giving them space, you're getting fouls called when you do try to body em up.

The Grizzlies have a mental edge playing against the thunder. It reminds me of the 90's knicks psychological edge against the Heat during their rivalry years. The Knicks always had confidence playing Miami regardless of who was on the roster, and always believed they could win against them in any scenario. Those series always went the distance with the Knicks winning every time except '97. I feel the Grizzlies have the same type of confidence whenever they see OKC on the court. If OKC doesn't win a game in Memphis this series ends in 6. If OKC splits in Memphis this series goes 7 games with it being a toss up.
When stuff goes sour, who does OKCfan blame on more, Scotty Brooks or Westbrook?

It's amazing how both are always the scapegoats when Durbeta chokes....
That's it? That's a short list. We have a buffet to choose from....Pop, Manu, Tony, Green, Tiago, Bonner, the ball boy, the phone rep that answers calls for season ticket orders....

I said Griz in 6, and I am sticking by it. Most of it is because I don't want the Spurs to match up with OKC, because OKC matches up perfectly with the Spurs game, but the Griz have a legit chance of upsetting the Thunder.
Having two legit big scoring threats, with one being a great passer, will cause significant issues for OKC. I never imagined Allen would be so effective against Durant, but the Griz does have the backcourt to limit Westbrook. Add in Brooks' legendarily bad coaching, and the Griz have a legit shot.
But then, realistically, OKC in 7, probably 6.

I can't believe people are trying to argue that Memphis' offense isn't abysmal. It relies on Conley floaters and Lee long twos in as their perimeter scoring. That's horribly unsustainable. This was literally the best game the Grizz could have ever hoped for from their smalls, and they squeaked by a Thunder team that was being assassinated by Westbrook. If anything, this demonstrates just how big the gap between the Thunder and Grizzlies is.:lol acting like Udrih, Lee and Allen shooting 15-21 while Durant and Westbrook shot 23-56 isn't a fluke.:lol OKC's offense isn't anything to brag about either. It's 2 players going 1 on 1 when it comes down to it. The rest of their players are useless pieces of shit. They are the new version of the 2009 and 2010 Cavs. Only 2 guys create points and nobody else does shit when the game gets tight. This is why OKC will never ever win a title. They look all great in the regular season, but they get exposed everytime in the playoffs.

No one's arguing that Brooks isn't a terrible coach. But it's one thing to depend on two top-10 players to dominate. It's another to hope that players who are barely playoff-worthy to shoot insane percentages.

There's no "design" that leads to guards shooting 75 percent. That's luck, especially the long jumpers.

Sure they might not shoot 75%, but don't act like they were hitting bad, contested shots. They were getting the looks they wanted, and with little contests. Go read that article I posted if you're not convinced this team can beat OKC.

Of course Memphis "can" beat OKC, just like Chicago "can" beat Miami. Efficient, low-scoring, defense-first teams can beat anybody. They just have to get really lucky.

memphis matches up better with OKC than they would the Spurs. yeah they probably need luck, most teams would against OKC. keep in mind memphis won the series in 5 last year. while westbrook is an obvious missing piece, he isn't exactly a superstar in the half court game, so as long as memphis continues to keep turnovers low and dominates the pace, his impact will be minimized. its a matchup issue more so than a talent issue, much like we've seen in the past with Indiana-Miami
even in game 1 where the memphis bigs were terrible and Durant had an awesome game, memphis made okc work their tails off in the 2nd half, getting the 22 point lead down to 2 at one point. the key to beating okc is to keep them out of the open court by slowing the pace and limiting your turnovers

Even if D Rose came back today in 2011 form, the Bulls would still lose in 6, max. Memphis has a much higher chance of beating OKC, and it has nothing to do with luck.

With all those adjustments, Memphis was one basket from losing, one 20-foot Tony Allen two from being down 2-0, one Westbrook pull-up from being done. That's how big the talent gap is. By no means am I trying to undermine Memphis' win. I am just saying that I don't see it as a harbinger for future success. I hope I'm wrong, obviously.

Durant scored 33 points in 43 minutes. By no means is that an "awesome" game by his standards. Don't get me wrong, I think holding KD to his average on lower efficiency is something Memphis can do reliably. But they're still playing with fire.
Essentially, basketball is a game of coin flips. Memphis is trying to win the coin-flipping game by limiting the number of flips, while OKC wants more flips. Memphis has worse odds on each flips, but they stand a better chance to win the majority of flips if there are fewer. But they still don't stand a great chance. They had to win a freakishly high number just to squeak by last night.

Blah blah blah you're typing a lot of words that doesn't get us a good assessment of what's going on..Kevin is being defended well by Tony Allen, both off-ball and on-ball..when Kevin gets the ball on the perimeter, Memphis is making an effort to send multiple defenders and forcing KD to more unfavorable scoring opportunities..Memphis just hasn't received the necessary props..you and others keep saying "oh well Memphis is capable of playing OKC well defensively!" when it's more than that..the Memphis gameplan on defense is to throw multiple defenders KD's way if he starts to make a drive to the basket, which he usually pulls up from 5-8 feet for a jumpshot..Memphis has the size, length and talent defensively to bother KD..they're allowing Russ to go off..nobody else on OKC is stepping up to fill the void, which is a problem starting with coach Brooks..the sets OKC run and the things they want to do offensively are well defended by Memphis with great game planning and very good fundamental individual defense followed by excellent team defense..

No offense but this is such a stupid forced analogy..the playoffs are all about matchups and what come from them..Memphis is a nightmare matchup for OKC and has been for years..now that they have a competent coach who has instilled an offense that utilizes the versatility and ability of their bigs, they're doing work..playing a favorable matchup against a team that has a clueless coach on the bench, you get outcomes like yesterday..

:lol Their coach has not installed any kind of offense that is consistently reliable. There's a reason they struggle on offense so badly...they lack offensive talent & scheme. He's doing about as good as he can with what he has I guess, but he's relying on a really gimmicky system where they run a lot of PnR with guys who are just ok at it and they rely on a lot of statistically bad shots. Not only that, their plan (and Joerger admitted this) is to run the shot clock down as much as possible to shorten the number of possessions. Shortening the game is one thing, but running down a shot clock and then relying on players who aren't good creators to essentially make something happen is a tough proposition.
Sure, he got creative with some back screens/picks and cuts, but overall, their offense is pretty basic and really limited. They have bigs who can score, but that doesn't mean his offense leads them to quality shots consistently.
Outside of Indy/Chi, they are easily the worst of all offensive teams in the NBA playoffs. Doesn't mean they aren't a tough team, but that's just the truth. I also think Joerger should play his shooters a little more (Mike Miller) but it's tough with their offensive lack of talent and strategy to shorten the game to such extremes.

I agree. But if they do they will need Tony Allen for defensive purposes who is limited on offense (but has played relatively well through 2 games).
I doubt Memphis can win this but for the Spur fans that are scared of OKC at least they will make them work for it as will the next team.
Spurs should beat Mavs in 5.
OKC is probably at least playing 6.
Hou/Portland has a good chance at going 6 or more.
Spurs in a great spot, only Miami is in a better one.

I know. I am saying, though, that I don't think Memphis has figured out how to beat OKC just because they won yesterday (and no, I'm not forgetting last year). I think in order for them to beat the Thunder, they're either going to have to continue to get lucky with guards making shots at 60%+ or do something completely different. I think it was much more about a prideful team not wanting to lose than it was about match-ups.
And the spurs are 3 baskets away from 3 more chips. Big whoop. To quote Terrell Suggs "there's gettin it done. And there's not gettin it done"
Again, I'm not trying to delegitimize the win yesterday. I am simply giving my opinion on what it means for Memphis' chances to having future success in the series.

Tony is a really good defender.
When he was with the Celts someone on here argued I was overrating him because he did a good job on Kobe.
With a "lax" whistle he can do as good a job on a perimeter star as anyone, including Lebron, PG or Iggy.

I didn't ignore Allen's defense Durant at all. I said I think that is part of Memphis' game plan that they should be able to count on, as in it wasn't a fluke. I was saying that Durant had an average game in Game One, and statistically he did. Now, was it a good one considering Allen's defense? Maybe, but I still don't think it was. All it takes is Allen getting into foul trouble (which he almost stupidly did last night by picking up ticky-tack calls helping on driving guards) and Durant can go for 40+. That's why I said Memphis was playing with fire, because if their best efforts are "holding" KD to his average, there is a real risk he will burn them eventually. Durant is the second-best player in the world. No one will keep him down forever.
As for the rest of your post, we know the bigs are helping Allen defend Durant. There's a reason Memphis' front court is the first reason people use to explain their defense. It's similar to what the Spurs did against the Heat in the Finals. No one's overlooking that Memphis has a good defensive game plan.
The analogy is oversimplified, but it is accurate enough. Memphis is an inferior offensive team. They limit possessions because they have a hard time scoring consistently. They try to slow down the game and get the best shots they can while also limiting the number of shots the opposing team takes. I don't think anyone would argue with that. The extension of this is that the Grizzlies are playing probabilities. They are hoping superior offenses will miss enough shots (due to Memphis good defense) that their offense can match them. Chicago is the same way. That strategy can win a lot of games against inferior competition, but against teams whose offenses can generate points under pressure, it greatly reduces the margin of error Memphis has.
spurraider21

Chinook it's not simply trying to limit shots. It's limiting the easy shots. Even against Memphis OKC is scary as hell in transition. They are keeping them in the half court where their talented defenders can have an impact and Brooks' lack of a good scheme is getting exposed. Look at the last spurs thunder game. In the first half the pace was slow, our turnovers were low, and despite a bad offensive half from Duncan, we held a lead. In the second half we started turning it over and the pace picked up.
Not only is slowing the game down "decreasing the number of coin flips" but it's also giving okc a less favorable coin. I'm not picking Memphis to win this series, but they can easily push this to 6 or 7
