plywood ain't cheap (if there is any left).
assuming the storm stays on the mean path of the currently predicted paths, we'll have most wind from the east, veering north, right? so boarding up windows on those two sides of the house should be enough, right?

It is a CAT 5 now. Anderson Cooper should not be riding this thing out. Nobody should. You'd think after Katrina people would understand that.
MannyIsGod

Boutons, yes. I really don't think people in San Antonio have a large need to board up, though. You'd be better off going outside and making sure your trees are trimmed and there isn't anything loose around your house.

Cooper sucks let him ride it out...
Ok who wants to ride it out with me at the house that's next to the Port A coast guard station? (well it's 1 block away)...
hahahah (no it's just a joke about riding it out there)

Effective immideately Aransas County Judge Glenn Gilloury is calling for an evacuation of Aransas County for all elderly people, a mandatory evacuation will take effect for Aransas County at 3 PM Wednesday 09/21/05. We are calling for a mandatory evacuation with citizens leaving the county no later than Thursday afternoon. Staging point for those citizens needing to leave the county who do not have transportation is the Live Oak Elem. School on Griffith Dr. off of FM 1069. Recommended evacutation route is Texas HWY 35 North to Tivoli, turn left on 239, go west to Goliad, turn right going north on 183 to the Austin area, and points further north.
Based on the conference call we had with the National Weather Service at 9:30 AM today, Hurricane Rita is currently a Cat. 4 Hurricane with 140 mph winds and it is tracking to go inland at Port OConner, TX (Calhoun County), with hurricane force winds reaching out 100 miles on the north east quad and 60 miles to the South east quad. We are at high risk of being effected by this hurricane. If it does not make the last minute right hook that it is predicted to do, it could effect Aransas County even more. We are to excpect a tidal surge and tropical storm wind by Friday night.

My family has a summer condo in Port Aransas 2 blocks from the beach. My family is debating leaving in a few hours to try to board up and sandbag around the south windows/door. I guess I'd have as hard a time getting down there as I would getting back.

SA is 150 miles from the water, 11 or 12 hours for the hurricane to lose energy overland, and at this point, SA is 75 - 100 miles away from the mean storm path.
I don't think SA, or any point 150 mi from the coast, will get anything by TS winds, 40 - 50 mph max. Comments?
Dude, north Mississippi, six hours from landfall, got rocked from Katrina. If memory serves they had extensive wind damage 300 miles inland.

I am not sure you can make any changes on your insurance or add insurance to a property once a hurricane is in the Gulf of Mexico.

Nope.. they won't underwrite it with a forcasted storm.
If there is no storm you can normally get next day coverage.
Mijo, I think theyd' be wasting their time. Look at Gulfport from the air. That is what you can expect on the coast. The House is as good as gone, boarding up is not going to help. These condos are constructed of CMU and resemble more of an apartment complex. They've withstood other hurricanes in the past although it has been subject to flooding. Provided this monster follows any of the models that predict landfall east of Corpus Christi, I'm hoping it will be spared.

Everyone ever seen/heard Ron White (comedian)?
"So I'm watching the news talking about a hurricane going to hit the Florida Keys. They interview this guy who says he's staying, and explains that 55 years of age, he is in good enough shape to withstand the force of a cat 3 hurricane.
Let me explain something to you. It ain't *that* the wind's blowing. It's *what* the wind's blowing. If you get hit with a Volvo, it doesn't really matter how many situps you did that morning."
Sorry, thought I'd share, and seeing Anderson down there on the coast when this hits just reminds me of that joke.

The 1:53 eye report from the hurricane hunters found a 920 mb pressure and flight level winds of 153 knots (176 mph). These numbers plus the satellite intensity estimates would ordinarily support upgrading Rita to a Category 5 hurricane, but NHC is being conservative, and calling Rita a strong Category 4 hurricane with 150 mph surface winds.
There are two hurricane hunter aircraft in Rita this afternoon. The NOAA hurricane hunters found a central pressure of 934 mb at 11:17 am, and the Air Force hurricane hunters found a central pressure of 923 mb at 1:02pm. This incredible drop of 11 mb in 105 minutes is the fastest pressure fall I can ever recall seeing in a hurricane, and exceeds the 10 mb drop in 100 minutes we saw in Hurricane Charley last year. With an eye diameter of 25 miles, an eyewall replacement cycle is not likely today, and Rita may intensify to a level close to Katrina's strongest point--902 mb.
Thats Jeff Masters. This is it folks, we actually have Katrina Part 2. You couple this with the storms we hard earlier this year in Dennis and Emily and I'm just floored. This is absolutely the worst season of all time.

Someone posted this on a forum my husband frequents: Good advice for you coastal peeps:
My friend, and EMS-type and a First Responder, won an award from the
Homeland Security Department for her epreparedness" research and for
community contributions; she has a list of ideas that she has sent to
me several times since her mother‼sup>TMs home was destroyed by a
relatively small hurricane in Florida 2 years ago. She says the worst
part (if you survive) is the (HTHHM) heat, thirst, hunger, humidity,
and mosquitoes. The second worst part is the lack of proper ID.
Do not attempt to ride out a category 4 or near-category 4 if you are
near the coast (100-150 miles, it depends).
Buy lots of gasoline if you have a gas-powered generator and plan to say.
fill containers (jugs, tubs, buckets, etc.) with tap water. Segregate
into clean, vs. edo not drink"
make sure to have several bottles of bleach
making sure prescriptions are filled, store in double Ziploc bags or
similar (SDZBOS)
put ALL important papers (and possibly important papers) and computer
files in a single box to toss in car (passports, housing papers,
insurance papers, loans, etc.) SDZBOS
place relevant maps in car
put all other papers (photo albums, etc.) in box to toss in car if
space is available. SDZBOS
arrange a point of contact, someone outside of the danger zone who
will coordinate messages from family members
make hotel reservations 2 days in advance of anticipated need (for
Dallas, San Antonio, Tusla, etc.), be sure to cancel them if you
don‼sup>TMt use them
update flashlight bulbs and batteries, and make sure battery-powered
radio is working, SDZBOS
if you have a propane lamp and stove, refill as needed and keep available
make sure candles are available, inexpensive hobby types, a dozen or
more minimum (SDZBOS)
have matches and cigarette lighters available, store in 2 or 3 areas
(with meds, in car, etc.) (SDZBOS)
store gun and ammo nearby, ready to use or toss in car (SDZBOS)
move some items (whatever makes sense) off garage and house floor onto
cabinets and tables, etc.
get extra canned food, get extra dry food that does not need cooking
(e.g., cereal)
take pre-storm photos of belongings (inside and outside), if
electronic try to duplicate images via CD or uploading, keep camera
charged for use after storm
fill car with gas and keep it full
clean backyard of projectile-type things (trash can lids, etc.), maybe
of no use as your neighbors won‼sup>TMt do this
buy/fill gallon containers of water for car trip (or fill larger
camping type containers)
prepare minimum travel kit (underwear, toothbrush, medicines, change
of clothes, extra shoes, insect repellent, etc.), keep small but take
everything that might be needed in a week‼sup>TMs time
collect kitchen implements, including Non-electric can opener, a pan
or two, spoons, etc; place together with foods in box to throw in car.
Get cash, in your pocket, at least $200 per person, but do not use
except for life threatening emergencies.
toss ice packs in freezer and keep filling an ice box with them till
storm is passed, can be used for water when thawed
purchase 4- or 6-mil plastic in rolls (3 x 50 or larger) and multiple
rolls of duct tape; do not use during storm but afterwards to patch
windows, or roof or to sleep under, or to cover valuables.
If storm is headed at you, get out of town. Batter operated radio is
essential sometimes in the hours before a storm, and for weeks
afterwards•monitor traffic and all news.
If you stay, be sure to monitor traffic situation on highways, and
other news bulletins.
If you stay, hope your power stays on and watch lots of loud movies.
I can hear/see Navy helicopters leaving Nav Sta Ingleside.
As soon as we get our shit wired tight here at the plant, I'm out of Rockport tonight.
Hope I have an apartment to come back to...

NEW: Rita to bring only a little rain and some gusty winds to S.A.
Web Posted: 09/21/2005 02:09 PM CDT
Anton Caputo
Express-News
Hurricane Rita shouldn't bring more than a bit of rain and some gusty winds to the Alamo City Saturday if it keeps on its present path, according to a National Weather Service meteorologist.
The storm is expected to make landfall in Texas near Port Lavaca early Saturday morning as a Category 4. The projected path should mean 4 inches to 8 inches of rain for Williamson County and 3 inches to 6 inches for Travis County, but probably no more than 1 inch for Bexar County, said meteorologist Cristy Mitchell of the National Weather Service New Braunfels office.
Rita is expected to take a sharp turn north shortly after making landfall in Texas. If the storm works its way another 50 miles or so west before making that turn, Bexar County could see 3 inches to 5 inches of rain, Mitchell added.
“Typically the east side of the hurricane has the highest rainfall amount, and since we're still going to be to the west of the center that puts us into the lower category,” she said. “Just looking at the spin of the hurricane, our winds will be from the northeast and the northwest, where everyone east of the center will be getting south and southeast winds that are pulling water from the gulf.”
Bexar County residents should see sustained winds up to 40 mph, with gusts of 50 mph Saturday, Mitchell said. By sunset, the winds should die down to 20 mph or less.

Well, the NAM has thrown me through a damn loop. It sends the storm more northly (as it is doing right now) but then shoots the damn thing harder to the west. The NWS needs faster computers so that these model runs go faster.

[QUOTE]The storm is expected to make landfall in Texas near Port Lavaca early Saturday morning as a Category 4. The projected path should mean 4 inches to 8 inches of rain for Williamson County and 3 inches to 6 inches for Travis County, but probably no more than 1 inch for Bexar County, said meteorologist Cristy Mitchell of the National Weather Service New Braunfels office.[U]

I'm listening to Corpus radio (KEYS) on the net and they're getting pretty serious about moving people out of the area; there's some serious concern down there and with good reason. As the strike point seems to be drifting south (now Port Lavaca) it makes Corpus as vulnerable as Galveston. (though I just heard that the storm is evidencing that northwesterly movement that has been expected)
In any event, it's good that they're starting to move people out now -- after the Bret experience in 1999, they had to seriously re-evaluate how to evacuate the city. I had to ride Bret out because there was no way for me to get out of Corpus -- no gas anywhere in the city and a drive of about 7-8 hours up to San Antonio.

Big problem with the mandatory evact that will be announced in CC later today. All the people that are getting paid early can't cash there checks with the banks closing this is a bad idea.
If they would wait till 1 tomarrow people can at least get funds if power goes down ATM's will be usless much like N.O.
If it's an emergency I would think one would go ahead and pay the 1% charge and cash it at a grocery store. Otherwise go deposit it via ATM or night deposit tonight and expect it to be processed early tomorrow. Then if you are evacuating, you will go to a place where the ATMs work.

When and what was this I've never heard of it.
http://www.srh.weather.gov/srh/jetstream/tropics/tip.htm
Ranks number 1 as the most intense tropical cyclone on record. Tip was located in the northwest Pacific Ocean, which on October 12, 1979 had winds gusting as high as 190 mph (306 km/h) and a central pressure of 870 mb (25.69"Hg). The size of the circulation around Typhoon Tip was approximately 1350 miles (2174 km) across. If placed over the continental U.S., it would almost cover the western half of the country.
http://www.weather.com/encyclopedia/tropical/climo.html
near the bottom
(On that map, I am guessing the little circle in mid Texas is Tracy. Small compared to Tip.
Cyclone Tracy
It was Christmas Day, 1974, in Darwin, Australia, and Cyclone Tracy was about to make landfall.
Cyclone Tracy began as a weak tropical low about 450 miles northeast of Darwin. Moving slowly to the southwest, it was classified as a cyclone late on December 21, at the start of the hurricane season in the Southern Hemisphere.
As Tracy came around Bathurst Island, northwest of the Australia, satellite imagery showed a rapid intensification when the storm moved across warm ocean water in the Beagle Gulf. Tracy then changed course and headed in a beeline for Darwin, Australia.
Tracy moved slowly onto land, about five miles per hour, causing great devastation due to its lingering pace. Strong winds, gusting up to 135 miles per hour, ravaged Darwin for at least five hours. The tropical cyclone's small, tight eye passed directly over the city.
The city of Darwin was almost completely leveled and had to be rebuilt. Tracy killed 50 residents of Darwin and fifteen people were lost at sea.

We havn't needed to get a new carrier becasue he never goes anywhere and the vet is around the corner.....
now with my mom evacing form Victoria and pretty sure that her house will not survive... we have a dilema!! She doesn;t think he'll stay calm enough to drive al lthe way to SA and actually suggested to me that she take him to the Vet and have him put down! :(
He's only 35 pnds and has a bum rear leg (was hit by a truck as a puppy).. I'm thinking they could handle him for the drive up here.. btu my mom is sounding less then enthusiastic.
dag nab it!!
I'm gonna try and talk her into boarding him... if she can find an open place ...
what do ya'll think?

Horrible idea to put down a dog that still has years left to live. If they can't handle a dog in a car for a couple hours, I don't know what to say. I couldn't live with myself if I had to put my dog down because of that.

Back to Rita...
7-8 foot surge in Florida panhandle right now from the storm.
This thing is gonna rock the coast, and if NO gets that same surge they are hosed again.
I give my dog, who's about 40 lbs, half a Benadryl before I drive from my place to SA. She's usually asleep in fifteen minutes. I've heard for smaller dogs to give them a baby aspirin to fall asleep, too.

My dog just passes out in the car.
We gave our dog dramamine once. It worked. We had just started out on a trip many years ago and we took our 7month old puppy with us. Come to find out he was car sick. He was throwing up every 15-20 minutes. We were in a pick up truck and he was riding between me and my husband. We were desperate so we got some dramamine and it worked....he was sleepy and we really watched for any signs of distress. After a couple of days he got the hang of car riding. :)

The forcast calls for sustained winds in the 40-50 mph range. I think that is safe if not a bit higher than what we'll see. The storm is almost certainly going to come in east of here, so we'll be on the dry west side of the storm with windy conditions. Nothing to be too worried about.

...rita Becomes The Third Most Intense Hurricane On Record...
Dropsonde Data From An Air Force Reserve Unit Reconnaissance
Aircraft At 623 Pm Cdt...2323z...indicated The Central Pressure Has
Fallen To Below 899 Mb...or 26.55 Inches. The Dropsonde Instrument
Measured 32 Kt/35 Mph Winds At The Surface...which Means It Likely
Did Not Record The Lowest Pressure In The Eye Of Rita. The Central
Pressure Is Probably At Least As Low As 898 Mb...and Perhaps Even
Lower. For Official Purposes... A Pressure Of 898 Mb Is Assumed...
Which Now Makes Rita The Third Most Intense Hurricane In Terms Of
Pressure In The Atlantic Basin. Some Additional Deepening And
Intensification Is Possible For The Next 12 Hours Or So.
Rita Currently Ranks Behind Hurricane Gilbert In 1988 With 888 Mb
And The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane With 892 Mb.

THREAT OF HURRICANE RITA FORCES MANDATORY EVACUATION OF ENTIRE COUNTY
The City of Corpus Christi and Nueces County have ordered the mandatory evacuation of Nueces County in anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Rita. Mayor Henry Garrett and County Judge Terry Shamsie called for the evacuation as of 6pm today, encouraging people to seek shelter in inland locations. Winds from Hurricane Rita are currently reaching 165mph. It is still early, but the storm is expected to make landfall in the Port O’Connor area sometime early Saturday morning, bringing high winds and rain to the Corpus Christi area as early as Friday afternoon. City Manager Skip Noe would like the City to be evacuated by noon Friday.
The City of Corpus Christi is working with the Regional Transportation Authority to provide assistance to persons with disabilities and those who may not have transportation. People who need evacuation assistance should call 289-5881. The RTA will provide transportation to Oveal Williams Senior Center , where buses are available to transport people out of town.
Corpus Christi City Hall and the Nueces County Courthouse will not be open for normal business on Thursday or Friday. This will allow for better use of City and County resources should they be needed to deal with the situation.

The 7:09 pm eye report from the hurricane hunters found a 904 mb pressure and flight level winds of 161 knots (186 mph). This pressure makes Rita the 3rd strongest Atlantic hurricane of all time. Tonight, Rita will be passing over the Loop Current, a warm eddy of water in the Gulf that aided Katrina's growth to a Category 5 hurricane. Fueled by this pool of deep warm water and an almost ideal upper level wind environment, Rita should continue to intensify until Thursday morning, when she will pass beyond the Loop Current. The eye has shrunk to 20 nm diameter from 25 nm earlier this afternoon. By the time the eye shrinks down to 10 nm, the eyewall will collapse and an eyewall replacement cycle begin, putting an end to this intensification cycle. With potentially another 12 hours to go before this happens, Rita could challenge Gilbert's 888 mb pressure record.
The list of strongest hurricanes of all time now reads:
Hurricane Gilbert (888 mb, 1988)
The Great Labor Day Hurricane (892 mb, 1935)
Hurricane Rita (898 mb, 2005)
Hurricane Allen (899 mb, 1980)
Hurricane Katrina (902 mb, 2005)
Hurricane Camille (905 mb, 1969)
I expect to rewrite this list when the next reconnaissance aircraft reaches Rita about 9pm tonight. How low can Rita go?
Jeff Masters
Can Rita break Gilberst's record of 888mb pressure?
I will give it a 60% chance.

The latest runs of two key computer models, the GFS and GFDL, now indicate that the trough of low pressure that was expected to pick up Rita and pull her rapidly northward through Texas will not be strong enough to do so. Instead, these models forecast that Rita will make landfall near Galveston, penetrate inland between 50 and 200 miles, then slowly drift southwestward for nearly two days as a high pressure ridge build in to her north. Finally, a second trough is forecast to lift Rita northwards on Tuesday. If this scenario develops, not only will the coast receive catastrophic damage from the storm surge, but interior Texas, including the Dallas/Fort Worth area, might see a deluge of 15 - 30 inches of rain. A huge portion of Texas would be a disaster area. It is also possible that Rita may not make landfall on Saturday as expected, but pull up just short of the Texas coast and pound it for days as it waits for the next trough to pick it up. We'll have to wait for the next set of model runs due out by tomorrow morning to know better.

When I got home and watched the 18z run of the GFS, I noticed that and told it to Jess. The GFS actually picked up on that few runs back.
THE GFS MODEL HAS FAIRLY GOOD CONSISTENCY WITH THE TPC TRACK
PROJECTION UP TO NEAR THE TIME OF LANDFALL; AFTERWARDS THE
FORECAST TRACK AND MODEL CONSENSUS RUN OUT AHEAD OF THE GFS
PROJECTION AS THE 21/00Z GFS BECOMES AN OUTLIER IN HANGING THE
SYSTEM UP OVER TEXAS. THE EXTENDED FORECAST REMAINS MUDDLED WITH
UNCERTAINTY...WITH TRENDS SUGGESTING A BUILDING RIDGE AND LOWERED
RAIN CHANCES BY EARLY NEXT WEEK.
Thats the discussion for the SAT NWS office early this morning.
Its a very plausible scenario and the GFS picks up on trends a lot sooner than other models for the most part. The GFS picked up on this storm last week (remember the Hey Manny thread?) before it was so much as a blob of thunderstorms.
I'm buying it. The look of that trof is not very good and the high pressure system has done some weird things lately.
Get ready for quite a bit of rain if it happens.

Manny....The NHC has not updated for a while. However, Jeff Masters has made some interesting observations. Several of the models have it drifting back over San Antonio after going inland. Jeff Masters says it may pullup before hitting the coast and pound the coastline for 2 days. Bad situation for south central Texas. Rain of biblical proportions would be possible if this happens.
