From what it sounds like he wants the best shot at a ring. At 33 he won't be getting another big contract so playing time isn't that critical.

Who gives a sh*t especially in the playoffs when he might not get any or very little playing time. But the man was an above average scorer for years and if he can provide just alittle of that for us, that's all that really matters. The Spurs aren't going to do Butler a wrong (this late in his career) by cutting him despite being serviceable after March 1st, without the chance to sign with another team for the playoffs. Or I don't think they will at least.

I thought Simmons too. He's the one who has seen his playing time dwindle, and Butler has played a kind of stretch 4 for us... now if Pop is ready to just roll Anderson for a "stretch 4" role (don't say Bonner bc lol the man and his calf injury and all the games he has not helped in this season) then by all means RC :tu. Butler's actually taking nearly all of Simmons's playing time of late plus it would be in very bad taste to cut an aging veteran after the buyout deadline making him ineligible for the postseason. If Bonner isn't an option, Simmons makes the most sense.

If he had a coach like Pop that would challenge him to play D then he would have been All-NBA & an All-Star....look at Porker.:rolleyes

On August 28, 2007, the Sacramento Kings (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacramento_Kings) and Martin agreed to a 5-year, $55 million deal.[10] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Martin_%28basketball%29#cite_note-10)

Martin got off to a fast start to the NBA season, while in the first 15 games was the NBA's leading scorer with 29.6 PPG.

can the Spurs just send Simms to the Dleague for the reminder of the season, without actually cutting him, and retain his rights?
They can send him, but it will not open up a spot, same as Anderson last season. If they waive him, then he's waived. I would expect him to be picked up somewhere else. Has decent enough stats and athleticism to be an upgrade for some teams benches.

When Klay hits 33, his defense is going to fall off the cliff (he already has mediocre defensive advanced stats)

First of all, let me just say that I think this could be an important addition, especially with Martin's ability to stretch the floor and make 3s as 3 pt shooting has probably been our biggest weakness this season, and a reason for our very low 3pt attempts (6th least attempts in the league, although we do shoot them at an absolutely excellent %). We simply don't have enough great shooters as we did in the past. To beat the Warriors, you need floor spacing and shot making, as it might be impossible to stop them and Steph Curry consistently in a 7-game series. This is why I think we must sign Martin if he's willing to join. Historically and even last season, he has proven to be a reliable scorer and 3pt shooter, so in that sense I think he can be even better version of Belinelli offensively. Defense is another matter.. He is still 33 years old, so his age is not much of an issue here and I feel he can contribute on the offensive end immediately, similarly to what he did with OKC averaging 14.0 ppg while shooting a career best 42.6% from 3. I see no reason he can't be an excellent spot up 3pt shooter as he was in OKC.

Now to get to my main point: If Kevin Martin decides to join the Spurs, I am starting to lean towards the idea that the Spurs would decide to waive Simmons to make room.

Simply put, experience matters to Pop, and this team is fighting for a championship and is in win now mode. Surely, Simmons won't be getting any significant minutes in the stretch run or playoffs, while Kyle Anderson has seemingly cemented a role ahead of Simmons I believe. Also, and unfortunately, Pop is not the type to waive a professional like Bonner who has been with the team for 10 years now. I just can't see it happening, although as a fan I would say he's the easiest choice. I also think Rasual's experience, ability to stretch the floor and play defense would also give him the edge over the inexperienced Simmons. Finally, if Pop was thinking to waive either Bonner or Butler, I think he would have probably wanted to do that prior to the deadline to be waived in order to be playoff eligible on another team, especially in the case of Butler. I can't assume any team would want Bonner at this point.

In the end, my head says they should just waive Bonner as he won't be playing for us anyway, but my gut says Pop will waive Simmons which would be sad.

I wish we could have luxury to have Kmart as 15th in our roster but it is a pipe dream... You don't bring this kind of player for staying with the bench bringing towels during breaks. West is playing near 20 min so comparaison is right there, if you pick Kmart is for playing him a bit, he is not 39 y/o or Matty broken. As 15th guy it won't happen and it is not worth discussing if dude is capable or not to fit with Spurs. Now contrary to you for 15 mpg on a vet contract I pick him without thinking twice and in this role he would be just fine.

I'm fine with bringing him in and playing him to see if he should get those minutes. He could obviously prove me wrong. But right now, I think Anderson and Butler do more than him, and if he wanted to come over only if he was essentially guaranteed minutes, I wouldn't be in favor. But he'd obviously play a lot over the next two months, and even if Manu comes back, guys like Leonard and Green haven't had much (or any in Green's case) time off. That would settle this argument more than analytics or stats would.

You actually do. Don't you remember the Corey Brewer buyout and subsequent thread a few years ago? I dunno if anyone has cap space right now, but they could totally be dicks and pick him up if they do.

How does that work? I thought on a buyout the last contract was dissolved.

How does that work? I thought on a buyout the last contract was dissolved.

Nah. You simply alter the amount of guaranteed money left on the deal in order to get your release. For Joe Johnson, he gave up three million. That just meant that his guaranteed money dropped from whatever it was (say $8 Million) to whatever it was minus three million (so $5 Million). However, if the player gets claimed, the guaranteed money returns to the previous amount, so it's not like Miller could have been claimed by a random team and still waived on the same buyout.

It's not something you see happen too often since it's poor form to claim buyout guys. But it's possible.

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q67

Sometimes players and teams decide to divorce each other. They do this by mutually agreeing that:

The team will waive the player
If the player clears waivers, the player's guaranteed salary will be reduced or eliminated (see question number 64 (http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q64))
In contracts signed or extended under the previous CBA, the payment schedule for the remaining salary may be shortened or lengthened (see question number 65 (http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q65))
Optionally the team's set-off rights (see question number 66 (http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q66)) may be waived

After the player clears waivers, he and his former team are free to go their separate ways. There is a quid-pro-quo between the player and team regarding contractual obligation and salary -- in exchange for gaining his freedom, the player agrees to give the team a break on the remaining salary he is owed.

I don't think any playoff team has the money to claim him, and only a few teams would even have the interest to sign him up once he clears waivers. I wouldn't be surprised if he made a decision by today or tomorrow, he's probably been thinking about this for a few days of course. He should be interested to join a new team ASAP to give himself time to acclimate. Remember also in the case of Andre Miller, it was announced he would join the Spurs even before he cleared waivers.

I don't see anyone claiming him. If this was his last year on his current contract yes. But you have to guarantee next year's PO as well. But the thing is, you have to pay him more this season. You would have to pick the remaining 2mil in salaries this year and then next. Right now, teams just have to pay him the minimum which is 500k if he signs with them.

Guaranteeing him 9mil in salaries is something I don't see any teams doing. That is why Johnson cleared. Martin's cap hit wouldn't be as high as Johnson's would have have been for this year, but the fact that 1 year remains on his contract is going to scare teams from wanting to claim him.

He is not counting Butler as a small ball PF. Butler has played that role several games over the past 4 weeks and has been HIGHLY effective at it. He even blocked Vuvecic shot, which IMO was the game sealing play against Orlando.

And Spurs will play alot of small ball against OKC and GSW. He is much more valuable to this team than Bonner is right now.

This is including that KA also has played the small ball PF. Spurs won every game he started at PF. Spurs have LMA, West, Diaw, KA and Butler that all can play the PF position w/ KA and Butler being more situational PFs.

I agree with your assessment. Blazers could. But they are already on the hook of paying Varejao 9.3 mil next year and he isn't even on the roster. Lillard will get the Max.

TB will have a lot of cap. I see them signing Whiteside and move Plumlee back to the bench. I just don't think they want to be burden with another contract of a player they don't really need. Simmons has been a dumpster fire recently, really on both ends. He hasn't done enough to get cut, but he's definitely been the worst player on the team besides Bonner and McCallum.

agreed. simmons' play really has taken a downward turn since just prior to the all-star break. coupled with the improvement of slo-mo, i'm convinced that simmons will see a significant decrease in minutes once Manu is back in the rotation.

Also, and unfortunately, Pop is not the type to waive a professional like Bonner who has been with the team for 10 years now.

I don't know about that. PATFO had no qualms sending Bruce Bowen away to be waived by Milwaukee to get Richard Jefferson.

Actually, Boban has been worse. At least Simmons has played in the regular rotation, Boban has come in only in garbage time.

We certainly don't want to can Boban for Martin.

If Bonner gets cut, then i see the spurs turning around and signing to him to some sort of coaching position. So that he can stay on the bench.

He's shooting 43% for the month and had one game where he was actually bad defensively against Utah and got pulled. Prior to that he was getting steady minutes for months. Teams have adjusted to how he likes to drive to the hoop and he tries to force the issue. Hardly a dumpster fire but I'm not surprised that you are using a shitty analogy as opposed to talking about what he's been doing on the court.

Last time I checked, you suck at predicting what the front office is actually doing --you couldn't figure out LMA for example-- and they have not made an announcement. And I am also not surprised you are once again going after one of Spursfans favorite players or one we're excited about.

If you compare him to other players that didn't wander the CBA wilderness it looks hopeless. I prefer to compare apples to apples. He is not your typical NBA prospect. Spurs are full of guys like him and why they are able to stay ahead of the curve: player development.

If you're talking about KA in the short term getting more minutes then sure but you are peddling this like he got relegated to the end of the bench. It's been one game that he's been in the doghouse since he was undisciplined vs Utah. You are just fearmongering at this point.

Best case scenario for Kevin Martin is that Chip Engeland works on his shot so he shoots as quickly and accurately as Steph Curry.

They have the same kind of "push shot" and honestly, that kind of shot is going to be the wave of the future.

Hate to get on the guy bc he could be a nice partner for Anderson, as I think they can complement each other very well in the future, but Utah was not his only poor game. Clippers he was just abysmally terrible. He's been declining all February. In the right situations he can thrive, specially in transition but those opportunities dry up against good teams and in the half court he's too prone to mistakes. Against good defensive teams when our own guys are struggling he will make situations worse by TO, and they are not ambitious plays TO, they are born from bad mistakes like loosing his handle on the ball.

He's the recipient of plays, struggles as the creator. Could be a rookie wall.

Defensively though is where he's really been bad bc he's been committing all sorts of really bad fouls, falls for fakes too often. POP just hates that, I think it is an area where he's stagnated on his development.

He had foul issues in the two games you mentioned. But prior to this month he was fouling a shit ton too. Look at his game log and its full of 3 and 4 fouls in less than 25 mins. I think it's more of an issue of now in SPAM Pop is demanding execution and using the doghouse to get his point across. We have seen Pop do this for years including with KA last year.

My issue is that this is a process as opposed to the end of the road that was being peddled.

Nah, at this point Pop is developing a play off rotation and when asked to step up, he showed he's not ready. Kyle was never expected to do anything but develop last season. We had a full roster and were looking to repeat there was no place to even develop a rookie which is shy he spent most of the season in the dleague. POP only played him very early in the season which showed he needed a lot of work on his shot. Then it was strictly the Kawhi injury which brought him back and he was much better, but he wasn't going to bump Marco and Poo wanted him to continue developing his game which he needed playing time and he got in the dleague. This is not the same scenario bc Sinn is much older and spent two full seasons in the dleague alreAdy.

Anyways neither Chinook not me are arguing he should be cut. He deserves a second season. Showed enough flashes to find out if he can at least improve his fouling, etc.
