Trying to hold back the tears reading and watching the comments and vids in this thread. It feels like losing a family member even tho he's alive and well lol. I'm 24 and live in New Braunfels Tx ( not far from SA ) I grew up watching and respecting this man. Thank you for memories Timmy and for putting all of South Texas on the map. You made us champions.

Tim Duncan retiring - it is a bittersweet moment. Without a doubt, my favorite player of all-time. I have a bit of moisture clouding my eye as I write this. All the memories over the many years, both good and bad. The ups, and the downs. 1999, winning that first title in NYC. 2003, that CRAZY Game 6 comeback and the near-quadruple double statline. 0.4. And that's just the first few years. I could talk about Timmy's past achievements all day, which is why he belongs in the top 5 of your GOAT lists.
In the end, he did what was best for him. After 19 seasons of doing what was best for the Spurs and his team, even taking multiple paycuts to help sign or resign players, that's the least the Spurs organization and the city can afford him now.The fact he lasted to 40 years old in the NBA is a testament to his work ethic, so one can't really nag him for moving on at this point.
Of course, now it is time for the Spurs to move on as well. How a team moves on from a player - or should I say, how a team BEGINS a new era WITHOUT a player like Tim Duncan, only time will tell. I fear the Spurs falling into mediocrity without the big fundamental's leadership, yet another part of me feels like maybe this is a defining moment for the rest of the Spurs, especially Kawhi Leonard.
Will he be the MVP of the League and lead us into a new era of Spurs history - the Kawhi era?
In any case... good bye, old man. You will be fiercely missed, for your play on the court and your leadership off of it. :lobt::lobt::lobt::lobt::lobt:

One thing to be considered: If KG and Paul Pierce both retire as well (as expected), we could have one of the greatest HOF Classes of all time.

-Kobe

No doubt. While at the time that did not hurt as much as 6, over the long run, it is worse because of the ring a year after 6.
Three worse Spurs moments IMO:
1. .4
2. 6
3. Manu fouls Dirk

I don't know man with 6 the trophy was rolled out and I think a lot of us thought our window had closed. It had been so long without a chip and so agonizing.. 6 made 5 so incredibly sweet. Doesn't matter though, just sad the wheels have fallen off. This is like a memorial service in here right now...I wonder if Pop chokes up at the press conference tomorrow.

Eh, as much of a gut punch 0.4 was at the time, I've come to accept it because I feel like it was far from a given that we would've gone all the way.
Spurs would still have to win one more against the Laker Supersquad, then a series against a very talented Minnesota squad (with prime KG, Sprewell, and Cassell), and THEN beat the same Detroit Pistons team who took them to 7 games a year later and were arguably playing stronger basketball that year.
The worst part about it really was that Duncan's shot will never get the credit it deserves because of Fisher.
Not only did 6 turn a sure thing into a bitter memory, but it also erased a clutch turnaround jumper AND three from Tony which would have gone down as two of of the biggest shots in Spurs history.

Agreed. It gives room to idiots like Tim Colishaw on Around the Horn today to call him the greatest PF of all time but a borderline top 10 player. Of course he got roasted by the rest of the panel.

Agree with you, not just on the court though. Tim changed the NBA, the culture, and how to build an organization in the modern Era. So many dudes have jobs right now not because of Pop but because of TD. He's a top 3 of all time not just because of what he did on the court, but everything else...damn this sucks

Nobody was beating the 2004 Pistons in the Finals. They utterly dismantled the Lakers and would have beaten us rather handily. We only beat them the following year because Horry went into god mode in the Finals.

"not with a bang but a whimper" His retirement came quietly and without fanfare, but his career was cataclysmic as far as San Antonio sports fans and Spurs organization is concerned. I had already resigned myself to the fact that the Spurs would never win a title in my lifetime, but then came Tim and 5 titles later I have become greedy and want a 6th though this one will have to come without the great Tim Duncan. Sad to see to him retire, but happy and blessed for the time we had him on the court representing our great city and team. GO SPURS GO!!!! Go Tim Go!!!! Here's to a great future for Timmy as he awaits his induction into the Hall Of Fame.

As much as I hate to say it, now more than ever Kobe and Tim's careers will be linked.
10 championships. 5 playoff showdowns (not counting 2013 since Kobe didn't play) split 3-2. 3 MVPs. 5 Finals MVPs. 33 All-star appearances.
Two very different retirements in 2016.

Disgusting. Imo one was toxic to their culture while the other cemented a culture that was already in place.
I was always hoping TD could make it one more year so he'd not have to share a HoF with Kobe but guess that's the way it is. To give Kobe some credit (ugh) he's been very complimentary of Duncan.

To call Tim Duncan the greatest of all time does not even begin to describe his overall influence on the game. Not only has he dominated the game with his abilities, but his selflessness, humility and sense of humour has provided the San Antonio Spurs with the blueprint for recruiting talents that fit into a team performing consistently at the highest levels. He was the ultimate competitor. The ultimate team mate. The foundation. The franchise. Tim Duncan's legacy will endure long after all the accolades have faded.

Hate to admit being an old man and probably watched more past Spurs games than I will future games. But still remember the day it was announced that we were leasing the Dallas Chaparrals for three years and were going to be called the San Antonio Gunslingers. Thank goodness that name never showed up on an official box score. It took less than twenty games to pass up the Chaps previous season attendance.
Had a few days of angst thru the years. Refs bad calls in the 1979 Washington Bullets playoff series, the Rod Strickland turnover in 1990, the .4 shot in 2004 Manu's foul on Dirk in 2006, and game 6 vs. Miami in 2013. I dealt with the angst by saying to my self " next time ".

What an amazing 19 year career we just witnessed. All with the same team on top of that. We have been so fortunate to have #21 on our side.
What a treat to watch Tim's entire career unfold in San Antonio with success I could never have imaged as a life long Spurs fan going back to the beginnings of SA's entry into the NBA.
Time marches on - present and future Spurs will provide high quality basketball. Make no mistake, though, things will never be the same going forward.

Can't believe its been 20 years. I can still remember the moment we won the lottery pick and now he"s retired. Wow how fast time goes by.
Going to wear my Duncan jersey to work tomorrow.
Well I guess the next thing to look forward to is his Hall of Fame induction.
Going to be odd seeing him sitting next to Robinson watching games.
Thanks for being a professianl and the greatest Power Foward of all time.

I can only echo the sentiments shared by most here ...
Tim Duncan is/was one of the greatest players of all time, but him being such a quiet yet great leader and (as far as we can tell from the outside) an amazing teammate and truly special role model is what I will remember at least as fondly as his game.
Thanks, TD, long may you run! :toast

Personally I feel like TD is getting more respect than Kobe got; his retirement was too drawn out. I think each mirrored their retirement to the way they played their careers, and that's fine. If Kobe gets his retired before Tim (which will probably happen), good for him - I won't be in LA for that, but I'll damn sure be at the AT&T center for Timmy's!

Opening night is going to be the weirdest evening ever for me. Been watching the Spurs back to the early days of D-Rob in the hemisphere arena. Feels like a good chunk of my life watching sports gravitates from these two big men. D-rob's retirement was rough but not hollow with Duncan still in silver and black. Duncan's retirement leaves a massive ache knowing 21 won't be called out again till his jersey is retired.

And so the 'Duncan Era' of our beloved Spurs comes to an end, and settles gracefully into its final home in memory. It's hard to believe it's over, and yet, it's equally hard to believe something so wonderful that never again will be is still so close behind us; so near, and now, so far.
Let it be known, I was a Spurs fan during the time of Tim Duncan.
Thanks Timmy.

I'm not from the US, but I had the immense privilege of watching Tim Duncan play live once before he retired. It was 3 years ago, in Los Angeles, in Staples Center. Spurs vs. Lakers. It was a late regular season game and the Spurs were battling for the 1 seed.
I remember Tim in the post going up Pau Gasol. He faced him up, drove to the basket, then just hammered the ball in Pau's face. I literally jumped out of my seat and screamed.
I will never forget that moment. #ThankYouTD

I've spent the last 25 or so years watching the Spurs and am in awe from watching Timmy come into the league and where he had led us. Every year you knew the Spurs would be not just competitive but have that chance to win the title. It is all thanks to #21. He played the game the right way and did it with class. He did it in his own way and that is why the Spurs are the best organization in all of sports. Still don't want to believe the ride is over but you know for Tim, he's probably going get up in the morning and eat his Cheerios like any other day. In an era that brought us the likes of Kobe, KG, Allen Iverson, etc., Timmy didn't gloat, he didn't talk trash, he just played the game and became a legend. Greatest player in his era!!! Sad to him go but will always have the memories!

Feeling finally starting to hit the feels. Even if the Spurs win another title with the current cast, or a different one in 10 years, it just won't ever be the same without you out there. I'm sure other fans have all learned something from watching you play all these years and what I learned echoes a lot of posts here and from social media (fans and NBA players): you are a shining example of how to be successful (one of the greatest to ever do it) with class. That's why so many of your peers respect the heck out of you.
Thank you, TD. Fuck now I gotta start a day at work sad as fuck.

The ringer (https://theringer.com/tim-duncan-retirement-63c201d26f48#.l0oqzvl1x):
Consider this: They had the highest positive scoring margin of any Finals matchup ever, and also the highest field goal percentage, while their highest-scoring player (Parker) averaged fewer points than any other scoring leader on a championship team (17.4). But nothing was more surreal than this:
They’d erased the Game 6 nightmare from the year before (when Ray Allen and the Heat snatched the championship rings (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44T6FYdLcLc) off their fingers and also all my emotions out of my soul). More than that, they’d turned that horrifying memory into something cool, a gruesome wound that healed into an intimidating battle scar. Allen hitting that 3 transformed from a historical marker of pain to a symbol of resilience and fortitude, the accelerant for the greatest, most fulfilling season in the history of the franchise.
So it would’ve been an easy story to write if Duncan had decided that that was the ending he wanted. But he didn’t. Because it wasn’t. And I’m glad that it wasn’t. Retiring after winning a title is like taking a bath with your spouse: It sounds like a good idea before you do it, and it always looks dope in movies, but it never ends up being as romantic as you’d hoped. You mostly end up just sitting there talking about how you never realized how small the tub is.
Duncan spent his whole career trying to win. So that’s how I thought his career should end. I wanted him to try to win and try to win and try to win and then finally not be able to. And that’s where we are right now. He died on his shield in the 2016 playoffs. It’s exactly the right Thing.
Never saw it that way, but the more I think about it, the more I agree.

I lived in San Antonio as a kid of 5 in early 1992, and I fell in love with the game under The Admiral. He gave you athleticism, professionalism and always willing to sign a ball or say hello. I sat front row behind the bench early in 1992, and he came up to me and signed a ball. At the time he was my favorite player that I ever saw live (sans the respect I have for Jordan). In 1996, when he went down I just felt a pit in my stomach, and I thought that the type of injury it was, that he would lose a step. The luckiest thing that ever happened was a lottery pick in the name of Wake Forest four year starter Tim Duncan. From the first day, he proved that silence can be deadly. You can pursue greatness, with leaving it on the court and not being a drama queen poser. For every trip to San Antonio for work, it was a personal attempt to see him play. The consistency, the non-wavering work in the community and more importantly 19 seasons of being a kid in a candy shop. I thank you Timmy, for making the game of basketball great again and that TEAM comes first. Congrats on all the accolades and successes, but truly thank you for being a role model in the worst way possible in a game that is full of clowns. Congrats to the greatest Team General of all time.

I've been saying it for like 2 years. Hardly anyone else here even says it except me.
2013 - He was the finals MVP if his teammates didn't choke it away. That amazing performance in the finals at his age was incredible. He had to watch his teammates throw away the Championship in game 6 after he put them in position to win it. That series got him into the top 5 IMO as he would have been the finals MVP had the last 27 seconds not happened. I also would have wanted him on the court for both of those possessions Pop pulled him out. It really pissed me off.
2014 - He was the Spurs best overall player in the playoffs even though Kawhi was the finals MVP. That cemented him there for me. It was similar to 2007 where Tim was by far the Spurs best player throughout the entire playoffs with TP taking advantage in the finals over Boobie Gibson. By comparison, Kawhi's finals MVP was much more impressive as he went against the best player on the planet while Tony took advantage of a lesser player in the 2007 finals.
2015 - Going against two of the NBA's most athletic front court players at his age and being the Spurs best player in the series made sure that he stayed in the top 5.
Tim was the Spurs best overall player in the 2013, 2014, 2015 playoffs. Think about that for a moment. Incredible that he was able to perform like that at his age on only one good knee. He was an absolute freaking legend.
I am absolutely devastated that he had to retire. I thought the injury to his good knee could be rehabbed during the off-season and that he could/would come back for one more season. It's going to take me a while to process/accept this. I really think he should have taken more time to decide. I think he should have opted out and taken off the whole off-season to see if it felt better by October, and then start training in October if it felt good and be ready to play around January.

I'm for sure the biggest Tim Duncan fan in the world, I'm so broken right now, no one can understand how much i admire him and the way i connected to him when first time saw him play in 1999 playoff, when i wasn't even much into basketball, it was so direct, so divine... everything about him and his game perfectly touching me... With his retirement i lost big part of me and meaning for life! Also hurting for life knowing how much more he should achieve for not so many time people let him down and so much bad luck!!!

Interesting way of looking at it. I kind of like that way of doing it as it makes it easier to choose if you do it by position.
The thing is Killa, Tim could have won 6, 7 or even 8 Championships with the Spurs. As good as Manu and Tony were, he had to play with some lower budget players in his prime as the Spurs never could afford other stars to put around him. Players also didn't seem to want to form super teams back then. lol, where were all these superstar players back in Tim's prime that are trying to form these Super teams now? If Kidd or someone like that came to the Spurs in 2004 or so, I felt the Spurs could have won something like 5 in a row.I consider Manu a big star in his prime (which was only a few years at his peak) and TP a fringe all-star level type of player. I always wondered how many Championships would Tim have won if he was in a big market like LA and was teamed up with Kobe. I think those two together could have been amazing. I really did think about it back in the early 2000s. I actually liked Kobe a lot up until towards the end of the 2003 season. He started losing me around the end of 2003, and then he totally lost me in the 2004 finals with his ultra selfish play. I think Kobe and Tim could have worked so much better together than him and Shaq as Tim wouldn't have had a problem with him taking the spotlight.

I highlighted the reasons why you'll be disappointed by the results fam. Twitter and polls reflect the casual of casuals and casuals think in terms of popularity and who the media stands behind and TELLS them who the best is etc. And Duncan was firmly behind both in terms of media backing and big media market. And then First Take is ESPN and nothing really needs to be said about that.
Its better to poll every league office/front office personnel from when shaq was drafted to now and ask who would they pick to start their franchise with if you wanted to WIN and build a dynasty for 10+ years. I absolutely believe Duncan would handily come out on top.

agree with a lot of this including Kobe's play in 2004 but that team was a wreck. not even sure how we made it to the Finals. Kobe killed that team in Colorado. honestly I dont see the big need to cause this debate between shaq, Kobe and Tim. Kobe was the highlight. Shaq the most dominant. Duncan the more consistent and reliable of the 3. And a much better team-mate and leader than both guys who not only feuded with each other but publicly with other team-mates, management etc.
Shaq was the better finals performer but in the regular season Kobe was probably the most spectacular and often times post 2000 shaq would be out of shape to start the year.. Duncan was the one you could rely on to be great in both regular season, post season and in the lockerroom. Which is why in the end I take duncan over both though it's close imho.

Put Duncan on the Lakers in 96 instead of Kobe. Shaq never leaves, Rodman never comes, so Del Harris never gets fired. The Lakers beat the Jordan Bulls at least once, then dominate the league for the next dozen years. Meanwhile Kobe Bryant retires as the second leading scorer in NBA history, never having made the conference finals in any of his six playoff appearances.
