Put Duncan on the Lakers in 96 instead of Kobe. Shaq never leaves, Rodman never comes, so Del Harris never gets fired. The Lakers beat the Jordan Bulls at least once, then dominate the league for the next dozen years. Meanwhile Kobe Bryant retires as the second leading scorer in NBA history, never having made the conference finals in any of his six playoff appearances.

Spacing is poor ...
and ...
Shaq is notoriously jealous so I dont think it would last.
Shaq was not going to mentor Tim the way David did.
Besides twin towers rarely ever work when BOTH guys are in their primes.

I'll see man. I live in NYC so it's tough lol. But if it's at all possible I will. No doubt

DRob on Mike n Mike closed his interview this morning saying Timmy was Top 5. They were a little surprised to hear him say that but dammit he was. If this were the Knicks there'd be no question...Kerr was the only other guy I've heard say this. I hope TD's legacy grows over time similar to the way the big O's has...

The Big O? I think his stature has diminished. Unfortunate. West is the Logo while Oscar gets included in some top twenty lists, some top ten. The guy was a triple double machine when nobody made a big deal out of that stuff. Back when the NBA got televised on Sundays after the NFL season ended, I loved the rare Sunday when a Cincinnati game was televised just so I could see The Big O ply his trade. Probably still my favorite player of all time. And I think he was much better than currently acknowledged. Please excuse the rant - just a guy who loves the sport of basketball and idolizes Oscar Robertson. :toast

It's true but still tough to see. The fact Kobe and Shaq are being voted greater than Tim is hard but the fact these two players were teammates makes it worse.

I agree completely, I cringe whenever I see Kobe or Shaq voted or regarded higher than Timmy, but then I realize that people aren't very smart. I learned LONG ago to never argue with or debate a person in "best of their generation...Kobe, Shaq or Duncan?" argument because I literally don't believe there is one. And I mean OBJECTIVELY speaking. It stands to reason that whatever puts Shaq or Kobe in the company of Duncan is SHARED by the other player. So its naturally MUCH easier to win if you have the help of another top 3 generational player. It never made any sense to me. Duncan is the obvious choice. Its like two of the three best fighters jumping the third and both claiming to be the greatest fighter. Yet twice (99 and 2003) that other fighter beat the shit out of BOTH of you AT THE SAME TIME and won more MVPs than BOTH of you during your PRIME...how is it even a question? Add longevity and market into the equation and it becomes embarrassing that it's even a supposed argument.

But again you'll feel a lot better about this stuff if you just realize people aren't very smart.

Duncan had a great bank-shot in his prime so that helps. but part of the reason David and duncan worked is because both could hit the mid-range jumper ...
Shaq did not have a great mid-range jumper so that forces duncan one of the best low post players of his our any generation in to a jump-shooter.
Which doesnt make much sense. Duncan and dirk would work much better as a duo because their skills and weaknesses complement each other much more naturally.
Prime Pau and duncan also works much better.

I dont think it's stretch to say top 5 ...
I dont really rank guys anymore I prefer all time 5

By position:

1st team

C Kareem
PF Duncan
SF LeBron (edges Bird)
SG Jordan
PG Magic

2nd Team

C Shaq (edges Hakeem but I could easily switch)
PF Dirk (edges KG but I argued for KG 2 years ago)
SF Bird
SG Kobe
PG Isiah (edges GP, Kidd, Stockton and Nash ...steph probably takes this with a few more elite years)

I dont judge players I never saw so No Wilt, Elgin, Oscar West for me ...

Your first team is awesome - except Lebron doesn't just edge out Bird, but beats him handily. But I did see all the guys you admittedly did not see, so I disagree completely with your second team. Most of those guys would be third teamers (substituting Hakeem for Shaq). Second team: Wilt, KG (over Dirk handily), Elgin, West, Oscar.

your point is valid but you are not objective.

I do agree, duncan deserves bonus credit for winning with HoF'ers but not truly transcendant stars like Lebron had Wade or Shaq had Kobe.

I do find it funny some on here will make a case for Manu over Kobe ...but now when this subject comes up it's "shaq had a top 3 generational star".

But your point still stands, but let's not act like you are being objective.

Prime Dirk was a perimeter player. He did not like to mix it up inside and that always galled me about him. But you are right - he and Tim would have been a PERFECT combo. If only Dirk hadn't been as loyal to the Mavs as Tim was to the Spurs!

Well I think it's pretty clear (Lebron over Bird) but I am respecting his evolution on the game.
When you factor in length of dominance and now that James has carried a team with probably no other HOF'ers to a title I agree I should say CLEARLY over Bird.

As for Dirk the ring matters and though KG has one as well ...dirk definitely carried his team more ...and did it for his own franchise. Maybe I am biased cuz I live here now (i used to argue KG because of defense) but if you watch Dirk play for 60 plus games you see how much he impacts teh game. His defense is mediocre but he is also a big time rebounder and clutch. KG at his very best did not seem very clutch to me ...
Malone also has a case but again rings matter to me ...

I think it's why he developed the one legged fade ...to ward off bigger defenders but also get his shot off.
Like Tim (and Shaq) dirk is also a bniliant playoff performer his numbers go up tremendously.

People have different criteria and points of emphasis within their criteria. Rings are not high among my criteria. So, I value KG for his great agility and defensive prowess in addition to his all-around offensive game - probably for the same reasons you once placed him over Dirk. He just had a great all-around game until the last 3-4 years. As for Malone (and Stockton, too) I hardly think of them in terms of which All-time Great Team I would put them on - ironically (or hypocritically!) enough probably because they never rang and did not receive the recognition that ringing brings.

That's because it's a dumb argument. Manu is a badass, no question about it, he is not a Kobe though. Manu was the ULTIMATE 6th man. Could have been a starter easily on the Spurs or any other team but he was not a franchise player. Manu is a definite HOFer for his contributions to the Spurs and his national team but Kobe was Kobe.

A woman from my tiny little high school was married to him for a few years (his ex-wife Kim). That was news in our dusty little Nevada town. Despite this very loose connection I hate Cowherd. He's a troll. Like Stephen A and the useless Skip Bayless.

Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for being the first one on the floor in August every morning after winning your 5th championship at 38 yrs old. Thank you for diving on the floor in a regular season game at 39 years old. Yes a HOFer with 5 rings wanted a loose ball more than 9 other guys in their NBA prime. Thank you for those simple words that meant so much to me at 4am when we got back from Chicago. Just a quick "we got another one coming up buddy" literally shifted my whole mindset on how to handle bad games. Shows how great of a leader Timmy was, saw i was down after a bad game and used few words too boost my spirit up to the sky. That was the greatest car ride home at 4am for me ever! Half of these things im thinking Timmy for he prolly wouldnt even know but impacted me so much because his actions led by example these last two years. What an honor to call you my teamate. Damn...I just realized that I witnessed the last game that Tim would ever win in the AT&T Center (Game 1 against OKC).

Total spur of the moment deal...realized I didn't have much plans for the day, found a cheap ticket on Stubhub the night before, drove down from Austin, and watched the Spurs dismantle the Thunder.

Everything seemed to be going so perfectly...and then the wheels fell off.

They showed game 1 of the '03 finals before that. Duncan had like 30, 16, 5 and 5. It was nice hearing Tom Tolbert say Duncan is an all-time great (in 2003!) and Walton saying that Duncan's the best teammate in sports.

Saw a clip of this earlier today. Surprised at how aware the Thunder fans were that they might be seeing Duncan for the last time.

Bet that game means even more now that it was the last time seeing Durant, too. :lol

30-16-5-5. My god. Again, I don't think we appreciated him far enough. He'll look at his numbers in the 2014 playoffs where he didn't play many 4th quarters due to blow outs and series numbers aka, heat and Portland in 5 games.

Actually, it was 32-20-6-7. With three steals, one turnover, and one personal foul. I came in and sat down at my desk with a couple of minutes left in the game.

The Lakers franchise has been dragged down to mediocrity and worse by Kobe Bryant twice in the last 10-12 years. 17 wins last year versus Tim's contributions from start to finish in 19 years. How is Kobe interesting anyway? He speaks Italian and takes really bad shots and can't win unless he has BIG help from guys like Shaq and Gasol? Please.

Anyone else noticed the difference between Kobe's retirement articles/speeches from coaches players and broadcasters etc? There is so much sadness and talk about not just the great basketballer he is but of the great man he is, what he has done for people and the community, how much he was loved and how much he will be missed. There is so much genuine sadness there.

Kobe's year long farewell tour had people only focus on his basketball skills and I hardly heard anyone mention his off court stuff, relationships and that he was such a nice guy and team mate and touched peoples lives. I guess that's the difference when one is an egotistical, narcissist and the other is a genuine kind, caring and likeable person. Anyway, just saying the tone of Tim's retirement is so much different and rightfully so. So much more emotion's for the big fella and the tributes more touching. There will never be another one quite like Tim Duncan.

One thing that I thought about deeply today that is out of all the top 10 great players of all time Tim was probably the only guy who wasn't a Diva. Jordan,Magic,Jabbar,Lebron they all tended to have Diva like issues despite being GOATs. Tim on the other hand never brought any negative baggage with him. I think this is the thing in my eyes that hurts the most in the sense the Spurs could end up in the future lucking out getting another generational player but what's the odds that he won't have some negative baggage to deal with.

It probably sucks more because we know how private he is and we'll rarely ever see him again. I think if we knew he was turning into a coach or something who's more on camera, it would be easier. But I guess it's even more emotional as a Spurs fan because he was the franchise and he was very well liked and unassuming unlike other stars of his stature. TD was truly one of a kind.

Imagine twenty or thirty years from now when two or three generations of NBA fans never saw prime Kobe or Timmy. At that point, Tim's achievements will be truly appreciated. These Kobe supporters are victims of the moment but numbers don't lie. Tim did more winning than anyone since Bill Russell. MJ has one more ring but the same amount of finals appearances. History is going to love Tim and not Kobe. To Spurs fans getting offended by people like Colin Cowtard, that sentiment will be lost to time.

I don't take guys like Cowherd or Stephen A seriously ever because they are sycophants. One thing I have noticed about all the media guys who hated Duncan is they all tend to be sycophants. Sycophants tend to hate people who refuse to allow them access to their lives. Duncan was never going to give them access hence the hatred.

When someone goes out of their way to say things like that, they usually know their position is weak. Kobefans are so desperate to convince people that Bryant = Jordan, they tear down everyone else. They've been doing it to Lebron for a decade.

Some help please. I want to listen to Duncan's interview at 12 CST. My son downloaded VividStreaming on his phone. There's a sunset in the background and music playing. Is there anything else we need to do? Will it just switch to the interview at 12 CST? Sorry - kinda technologically ignorant here.

That's right, it's a radio station. At 12CST the DJ should start talking... I have the same and he came on and said he'll have Tim there in an hour or so

It wouldn't surprise me if TD agreed to do an interview with his friend to get his friend some recognition with the app. Idk how many downloads it had before, but in the app store now it has 5000 downloads or so. I imagine that number jumped up quite a bit once the announcement was made he'd be on there

How am I supposed to play next NBA 2k17 online against cheesers? Very sad to start a game without Tim on the roster?

It is a MUST to come up with a pretty emotional script during Spurs game.

I believe I'll quit playing 2k series. I am retired too. I believe 2k17 shall have a Timmy cover as well.

Wow, RC breaks down and cries at the end. There's just so much emotion in this departure from so many. As a man, I think how important my career is to me. Tim basically created these guys careers and helped them succeed. It's about so much more than basketball...
