The Dodgers are still hanging around. That’s a scary thing. Houston won’t hold them off like this. They need to add to this 5-0 lead or they will lose.

Of course :lol

So predictable. I do blame this uppercut/flyball mentality the Dodgers have bought into this year, leads to strikeouts and swinging over or under pitches that produces soft dribblers or pop ups.

The Dodgers have been far worse with LOBs, including last inning. Momentum is still with the Astros at this point, albeit one swing of the bat by LA can change it.

What would "going beyond Moneyball" be?

Jeff Luhnow is an engineer, economist, and businessman. His analytics go beyond just the evaluation of statistical analysis. He's hired people with backgrounds in engineering, economy, psychology, law to his analytic department. Not only people without direct baseball backgrounds, but people without necessarily statistics backgrounds. His philosophy essentially and in short is to come up with any idea that may help the team and organization better. It doesn't have to deal with scouting players or pitching or swing mechanics. It doesn't have to deal with baseball or statistics at all. Any good idea that helps the organization and is worth pursuing is pursued.

It's beyond what we all know about moneyball. It's pretty crazy.

I'll give you a baseball example first. As good as Verlander already was before Houston traded for him, Houston's resources made him better. The Astros have a very in depth program to analyze everything about their pitchers. They have a super high definition video that their organization uses and it helped identify something in Verlander's mechanics on his slider that helped him make an adjustment to add more downward tilt to make his slider even more effective. It's something I believe no other team uses.

As far as the other stuff, I don't know enough to speak in specific detail about how they use economics and psychology and philosophy and sociology and law to their advantage. But what I've read is that they use those things in greater detail than any other team. So this is sort of short guessing of the types of examples that may be what they do. So as far as evaluating prospects, beyond statistical analysis of their talent on the baseball field, let's say they would not only do a standard psychiatric evaluation on how a guy may project mentally, but they would go into the psychology and social behaviors of their family history to evaluate a prospect's mental and projectable social behavior. They would go into the socio-economics of where a player is from to help project him. Why are Venezuelan shortstops so successful? Why do Dominican corner outfielders project so well? Find the trends, identify the markers, create algorithms to provide information. Use it in the evaluation process.

Now that extends beyond their player evaluations. They use those things in hiring their front office and minor league coaches and instructors. They have those engineers in their analytics department that come up with algorithms for all sorts of things. And again I can't give you specific examples. But when you ask doesn't every owner / manager do everything they can to make their organization better? The short answer is no. Because the basic premise for Luhnow is essentially don't leave any stone unturned, no matter how irrelevant it might seem, beyond just baseball and statistics. And that's what the Astros under Luhnow has been trying to do. It's beyond advanced statistical analysis. It's everything and anything they can think of.

I'm no expert on it. I'm not trying to purport to be. That's just what I've gathered from what I've read on Luhnow.

As a baseball fan, I like it. You guys were the hardest to strikeout and showed analytic calculator heads that bullpens can be overrated. Without Verlander being an innings eater against the Yankees, the Stros aren't here. The 7/8 inning starting pitcher needs to become valued again.

That was anti-climatic. Spent watching the game in a Dodger bar in the O.C., and it was somber. This one is going to hurt all winter for sure. Plenty of chances to have won this series, but the curious analytic side of the game taxed the bullpen and the lack of faith in your starting rotation was too much and Darvish shrinks in the spotlight. midnightpulp do you think after this pitiful performance in the WS the Dodgers bring back Yu? I know that Otani isn't likely to head over. Probably bringing up Buehler (sp?) as well. Also need to fix the holes in Bellinger's swing. Congrats, though, are in order to the Astros and the fans like djohn2oo8 (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=14870). I think it was 2015 when I was watching the Astros play the royals in the ALDS and I thought this squad were good and then 2017 happened. For all that Houston has been trhough, at least this offers some temporary cause for celebration.

Tough decision with Yu. He was amazing in the early rounds and then just folded. That early round performance might be enough to justify taking a flyer if there's no better options available. Buehler is definitely intriguing.

Dodgers also need to get more well rounded with their plate approaches. As I've said, they're too preoccupied with trying to lift the ball. Lifting the ball has its time and place, but good pitching will always eat up uppercut swings.

I've always been mystified at why Darvish, a guy with nasty, nasty stuff, always flounders in the playoffs. We might have an answer:

http://www.businessinsider.com/yu-darvish-tipping-pitches-world-series-loss-2017-11

"All of a sudden I realized his right hand, every time he's going to throw the fastball, puts it in and it never moves, because he already has the grip," Perez said. "But every time he's going to throw the slider, puts it in, and you see a little bit of movement. That's all you need: a little bit of movement. Now I know it's not a fastball. I eliminate the No. 1. You eliminate the No. 1, it opens the door for beautiful things to come."

He's like a poker player blinking twice every time he has a great hand.

Marlins are trading Dee Gordon to the Mariners. Guess that means Stanton is staying put in Miami. What a horrible situation that's turned into; thought the new ownership would turn things around but it seems Jeter's group is even more incompetent than the last one.

I seriously wouldn’t put it past the Yankees to have Jeter go “undercover” to make this trade possible. Everything he’s done as owner is a guy who clearly doesn’t care about the franchise he just took over.

Derek Jeter only has 4% of the ownership. There are at least 5 partners in the group that have greater ownership shares. At the very least superficially, Jeter certainly gives off the appearance of corruption and collusion with the trade. I'm curious if the owners just gave Jeter general executive discretion or if Jeter actually approached them with the trade proposal and got approval before pulling the trigger.

If it weren't the Yankees, it wouldn't be so slimy. Miami didn't deserve Stanton anyway. It's a horrible sports town, rivaling the likes of Atlanta and Phoenix. They don't really care about their teams. Yet Miami wasn't only blessed with two World Series titles late 90s, early 2000s, but they were also gifted a couple extra NBA titles because LeBron's decision to play buddy ball with Wade and Bosh. Marlins fans deserve losing Stanton. Sucks it had to be to the Yankees.

939516287599833089I don't see it, tbh. The Marlins had trades lined up with the Cardinals and Giants until Stanton refused to waive his no-trade clause for either team. If he had waived it, he'd be a Cardinal or a Giant right now. If he didn't want to be a Yankee, he wouldn't be one right now. Collusion would be a waste of time and effort when the player in question can just reject any trade.

As for the idea that Jeter "gutted the team" - he had to do it for the financial health of the franchise. Loria left the Marlins saddled with $400 million in debt. They've been operating at a loss for years. Stanton's contract was insane when they signed it and any new owner was going to trade him ASAP.

I agree that the optics of Jeter trading his new team's best player to his old team are terrible, but that's all it appears to be: optics.

This is true, but Jeter is in charge of the Marlins' baseball operations, so this trade is ultimately his responsibility.

Chris Fall

That was point. He's making the decision while his investment risk pales in comparison to several of the other owners. Hence, it looks extra fishy. Would it surprise anyone if Jeter in a few years sells all or most of his ownership shares back to the ownership group or to another investor, the way Jay-Z did with the Brooklyn Nets?

The part of Stanton refusing to go to the Giants and Cardinals is true. But that doesn't mean the deal to the Yankees isn't super shady. They gave away Stanton for peanuts. Stanton wanted to go to LA. Jeter could have given a sweetheart deal to the Dodgers or Angels. He didn't. Starlin Castro and two lower level prospects, neither higher than #9 on the Yankees prospect rankings for the best power hitter in an era of power hitting likely since a juiced Barry Bonds. Its hard to believe that was the best trade package they could get in return from any team Stanton would agree to go to.

I will say this - Jeter seems to be going out of his way to make the optics look as bad as possible:

Jeter needs to man up and at least give the fans, media and league an explanation for how the Stanton trade played out. It's pretty pathetic to hide from the winter meetings.

So Yu was tipping his pitches in the World Series, which explains how atrocious he was. Big question is, how did the Dodgers coaching staff not notice this? He was doing the exact same thing earlier in the year with Texas, you would think they’d be on alert and paying better attention to him.

Matt Kemp back to the Doyers.

Welcome home, but he's past it. Can't stay healthy, and even when he did put up good numbers after his post-MVP level year, his WAR was always pretty below average. Baseball's weird now, becoming a young man's sport. Seems when modern players hit 30, they trend downward real fast.

I've been watching baseball since the mid 80s, so I won't pretend to know about players before then but for my money, Vlad was the best bad pitch hitter I've ever watched. There's often a video of him drilling a single off of a pitch that bounced up to the plate. And he was quite literally the type to be able to hit from helmet to shoestrings. Hand-eye coordination and reaction time as ridiculous as it comes. Well deserved.

One week away from pitchers and catcher reporting and we've still got them big FAs on the market. Really hope GM's are able to stick to their guns and refrain themselves from handing out those 5yr+ mega deals.

Even playing DH and on his last legs, he was still the most exciting player of that 2010 Rangers team. Well deserved, it’s just a shame he played in the steroid era and never truly got the recognition he deserved as a player. At least he’s getting it now, he was 100x the player Sosa was.

Considering how frigid the free agent market has been with the bigger name free agents, it’s a pretty good deal for Yu. I was starting to think we’d only be seeing 4-5 year deals to the more expensive free agents. mlbtraderumors predicted $160M over 6 for Yu. And if he reaches his incentives, that’s still pretty close. Question is will other teams follow suit by giving up 6 year deals to the marquee guys or keep holding out for shorter 3-5 year contracts.

Not happy with the 6th year on that deal. He'll be over 37 at that point. Curious to see what Arrieta gets.
