China is already on the road to purchasing less of our newly issued debt, whatever happens on the trade front. Although its annual trade surplus with the U.S. has stabilized at around $350 billion, it’s well below its peak of a few years ago. And China’s waning power as an exporter, primarily due to the stronger yuan, has substantially lowered its holdings of foreign reserves. So just when the U.S. deficit is set to jump from $667 billion in 2017 to close to $1 trillion in this fiscal year, and an estimated $2.4 trillion by 2027 if current spending and tax policies continue, China will be meeting a lot less of our fast-growing need for funding. Put simply, the supply of Treasuries will explode, and foreign demand will likely prove more reserved than in the past, thanks in large part to shrinking purchases from China.
That scenario already threatens to cause precisely what the U.S. can’t afford: a spike in interest rates. Of course, yields are bound to rise somewhat because of the Federal Reserve’s pledge of serial short-term rate increases and a newly resurgent economy. But the Congressional Budget Office is forecasting that the 10-year Treasury yield will reach only 3.7% by the end of 2027, up from around 2.8% today. Even if yields stabilize in that range, interest on the debt would reach almost $1.1 trillion by 2028, according to a forecast from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. (That’s the equivalent of two-thirds of projected spending for Social Security a decade hence.)
Given the weight of those carrying charges, any significant rise in “real,” or inflation-adjusted yields would prove disastrous. (What matter is real not nominal rates, since the Treasury would recoup moderate increases in inflation via higher tax collections on higher incomes.) A real-rate surge would increase borrowing costs for Uncle Sam and for businesses, and make it ever more expensive for the federal government to meet its obligations on everything from military spending to retirement benefits.

BEIJING — China announced Friday that it planned to impose tariffs on $3 billion worth of American-produced fruit, pork, wine, seamless steel pipes and more than 100 other goods, hitting back at the United States hours after President Trump proposed tariffs on about $60 billion worth of Chinese-made products.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce issued the threat in an online statement that said its proposed measures retaliated against the Trump administration’s earlier decision to impose tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum. The timing, though, also appeared to be a warning shot against Mr. Trump’s latest action on the trade front, on Thursday, when he took specific aim at a much wider range of Chinese products.

“It’s not devastating economically by any stretch, but it’s certainly going to hurt those interests in the United States that are trying to export,” Mr. Bown said. He pointed out that the retaliation by China sends “a negative signal, that they are not seeking to de-escalate things.”
Experts say that China picked its targets carefully by choosing goods that have political resonance. Much pork is produced in Nebraska and elsewhere in the Midwest, where Mr. Trump has strong support. Other items that could face tariffs are fruits and nuts that mostly come from California.

Ran Across this article. (not sure what to make of it, other than mild amusement)
A Dow Theory sell signal could trigger a selling avalanche
The second reason to be on your guard for the possibility of a Dow Theory sell signal: The timing system is widely followed, so a sell signal could generate an avalanche of selling. Among the investment newsletters I monitor, for example, no market timing system is more widely followed. Countless individual traders use it to decide when to build up cash.
To appreciate just how close a Dow Theory sell signal is, read my March 2 column in which I detailed the three-step process required to generate such a signal. Suffice it to say that the market has already jumped over the first two of those steps. The third and final step requires the Dow Industrials to close below 23,860.46 and the Dow Transports (:DJT) to close below 10,136.61.

In your own words, how has he ripped off suppliers for decades? Not saying your wrong, but would just like to know.
Trump would contract with suppliers, with the payment back-loaded.
job done, so contractorr wants to be paid,
Trump says "nope, I won't pay, so sue me", knowing the contractors often couldn't afford to sue and were out of pocket, maybe fatally so, for material delivered and wages paid.
in Atlantic city, contractors even got together and hiked their job quotes to Trump, so they would at least get something.

ever hired a contractor before? they fucking suck, waste material, hike up costs 500%+, usually do a shitty job, and most times leave a job site unfinished.
with that said, you know the inner workings of djt's biz deals? wow! love how you act like you do.

California farmers, winemakers kick dirt over Chinese tariffs
California's vintners and growers fumed Friday at the growing prospect that wine, nuts, fruit and other Golden State exports would become collateral damage in a trade battle between President Trump and China.
The $47-billion industry, which largely backed Trump, has been buffeted repeatedly as the Trump administration has halted or reopened trade talks and proposed punitive tariffs aimed at protecting American jobs.
This time, an executive order imposing tariffs on $50 billion in Chinese imports prompted China to target 128 U.S. products for steeper trade barriers, including many crops and animal products.
China's first action would take aim at $3 billion in U.S. exports by imposing a 15% tariff on products including fresh fruit, dried fruit and nut products, and wine,
A second phase of 25% tariffs targets $1.9 billion in U.S. exports including pork — a blow to Midwestern and Plains states.
Soy, by far the biggest agricultural export to China, was left off the list.
China has to avoid blowback on its own constituencies. It desperately needs foreign soy, which it imports from the U.S. Midwest and Brazil, and
animal feed such as hay, an export that earned more than $100 million for California growers in 2016
California's nut industry — almonds, walnuts and pistachios — sold $1.1 billion in 2016 to China, its third-largest foreign customer
China also bought more than $220 million in fresh citrus and table grapes from California that year,

China hammers US goods with tariffs as sparks of trade war fly
China has increased tariffs by up to 25 percent on 128 U.S. products, from frozen pork and wine to certain fruits and nuts, escalating a dispute between the world's biggest economies in response to U.S. duties on imports of aluminum and steel.
China warned the United States on Thursday not to open a Pandora's Box and spark a flurry of protectionist practices across the globe.
"There are some people in the West who think that China looks tough for the sake of a domestic audience, and would easily make concessions," the Global Times said.
"But they are wrong."
The Global Times is run by the ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily, although its stance does not necessarily reflect government policy.
Reaction to China's measures varied on social media, with some saying Chinese customers would be the ones to ultimately pay for a trade war.
"Why not directly target soybean and planes? The tariffs that China announced today don't sound a lot to me," said a user on the Weibo microblog platform.
Aircraft and soybeans were China's biggest U.S. imports by value last year.
In a statement published on Monday morning, the commerce ministry said the United States had "seriously violated" the principles of non-discrimination enshrined in World Trade Organization rules, and had also damaged China's interests.
"China's suspension of some of its obligations to the United States is its legitimate right as a member of the World Trade Organization," it said, adding that differences should be resolved through negotiation.
Weibo prominently featured the list of U.S. goods that China is targeting among the day's "hot" trending topics.
"I will never buy fruit from the U.S.," a Weibo user wrote.

Donald Trump Fucking Amazon To Own The Libs
https://img.wonkette.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/amazon-women-futurama.jpg
Now that there’s nobody left to even pretend they’re putting Big Dumb Baby in the corner, Donald Trump’s personal war on Amazon owner Jeff Bezos is really heating up, as are his bizarre claims that the Postal Service is losing money on delivering stuff. So of course, Trump continued his one-man crusade to tank Amazon stock today:
https://img.wonkette.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Trumptweet-amazon-tuesday.jpg
ep, he’s worried about the costs of Amazon deliveries being Jason Bourned by the taxpayers, which means we’ll wake up some morning with Combat Tweeting Skills we don’t remember learning. As Yr Wonkette noted yesterday, Amazon does get a discounted — but still profitable — rate for delivering packages, and the postal service is required by law to make a profit on shipping packages. So yeah, Trump’s still lying, just like he lied about the US balance of trade with Canada.
Which is not to say the lies aren’t effective: Amazon stock was down by 5 percent yesterday, and the Nasdaq index, which is loaded with tech business, was down 2.7 percent for the day, and down 9.5 percent from its high point last month. Some of it is probably due to disenchantment with Facebook and uncertainty about trade with China, too, but as Gabriel Sherman notes in Vanity Fair, Trump is simply delighted by the chance to hurt Jeff Bezos, so he’s likely to keep up the attacks. US economy? What US economy? The guy’s having fun!
Now, according to four sources close to the White House, Trump is discussing ways to escalate his Twitter attacks on Amazon to further damage the company. “He’s off the hook on this. It’s war,” one source told me. “He gets obsessed with something, and now he’s obsessed with Bezos,” said another source. “Trump is like, how can I fuck with him?”
No matter how many times he’s been told the US Postal Service makes buttloads of money from Amazon, Trump wants to direct the USPS to raise rates on Amazon, because that would hurt Bezos. Hurting Jeff Bezos is a matter of national importance, because Bezos owns the Washington Post, and the Washington Post has been very unfair to Trump by continuing to do journalism at him. Very good journalism at that — when other papers have been shedding reporters, Wapo has been hiring.
Ergo, it is simply logical that Amazon must suffer, especially because new White House Economic Adviser Larry Kudlow has yet to remind Trump that the Postal Service really needs Amazon, since email has taken away much of the system’s revenue:
“Trump doesn’t have Gary Cohn breathing down his neck saying you can’t do the Post Office shit,” a Republican close to the White House said. “He really wants the Post Office deal renegotiated. He thinks Amazon’s getting a huge fucking deal on shipping.”
Yes, we really are in 2018, not the Gilded Age, but this really is a US “president” who wants to set postal rates to punish a guy he doesn’t like. People in TrumpWorld are also “encouraging Trump to cancel Amazon’s pending multi-billion contract with the Pentagon to provide cloud computing services,” says Sherman, because isn’t that what political power is supposed to be used for? Of course, as former US Attorney Preet Bharara points out, Bezos just might have some leverage of his own:
What if Jeff Bezos bought Twitter with the change in his pocket and shut Trump's account?
Trump just plain doesn’t believe repeated statements by Bezos and WaPo that Bezos has no involvement in editorial decisions. Don’t be silly! Trump knows how newspapers work, because his pal David Pecker does such a fine job of ensuring the National Enquirer covers Trump positively, right down to buying the rights to stories Trump would rather see buried, like that affair with the gal from the naked-lady books. Hell, if Donald Trump owned a newspaper, he’d definitely tell that newspaper what to print every day, right down to selecting headlines. At least for the few months before the newspaper’s inevitable trip to bankruptcy court.

White House Unveils Tariffs on 1,300 Chinese Products
a 25 percent tariff on Chinese products like
flat-screen televisions,
medical devices,
aircraft parts and
batteries,
outlining more than 1,300 imported goods that will soon face levies as part of a sweeping trade measure aimed at penalizing China for its trade practices.
The move, which stems from a White House investigation into China’s use of pressure, intimidation and theft to obtain American technologies, is likely to inflame an already-simmering trade war between the countries.
On Monday, China said it would slap tariffs on 128 American products (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/01/world/asia/china-tariffs-united-states.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=first-column-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news) in response to a separate White House plan to tax steel and aluminum (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/01/business/trump-tariffs.html) from China and other countries.
The products targeted by the White House are part of its
plan to go after China’s dominance in cutting-edge technologies like semiconductors, electric vehicles and advanced medical products — industries that China is pursuing dominance in as part of an industrial plan known as “Made in China 2025 (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/26/business/china-us-trade.html).”

FWIW. I have a firm that does my marketing for me. I was feeling heavily oversold on soybeans. We talked about tariffs on southerns a few weeks ago and she replied it would be unfortunate (we all knew it was coming, US doesn't make anything worthwhile to China outside of Ag) but much needed in the long run. Pretty much.
Same thing happened on steel tariffs. Markets acted almost instantly as if prices were already worked in, even though the tariffs aren't actually in effect.
Trump is going to push for a better bargaining position, hopefully realize his hand is weaker than he thought it was, and parade around the minor concessions he is going to get as a win, long before he pulls the trigger. This is a bluff, IMO.
Trump voters will then be brainwashed into thinking that the field goal was a 99 yard touchdown by the sympathetic state-owned media.
China for its part has come out and said that the targets of their sanctions will be the red states that voted for Trump. :lol

Wasn't trying to justify my own position. Was just implying that it doesn't mean everyone benefits from high prices. China announced a big soybean order today. Was probably bought yesterday. Most likely they will cancel that order and rebuy. Very typical for them to do that with no repercussions. They don't play fair. Do you believe that everyone should be able to do that?

Cancel order and rebuy?
Sooner or later fewer will be willing to sell to them without a locked in price.
Markets have a way of punishing bad actors with negative feedback like that.
Don't really have enough information to meaningfully comment other than that.
Short term, based on your description: Sure. let them play unfair, see how that plays out.
Long-term: Address it somehow.

Managed trade is a mistake, not a victory. It substitutes the power of political lobbies for market forces, favouring loud, well-organised producers over silent, disparate consumers and robbing economies of the nimbleness needed to adapt to changing technological conditions. Other countries will feel freer to follow America’s example, making a trade war a repeated risk rather than a one-off danger. Mr Trump’s approach threatens to leave everyone much worse off. Some deal.

This isn't your supplier for dishrags at Walmart. This is China. You do realize they don't respect patents, right? I can buy a small engine, interchange parts with a Honda, and get it for pennies on the dollar. You REALLY are that clueless to assume that if China doesn't play fair we just stop dealing with them. There's so many examples of the BS. You said yourself, Longterm, address it somehow. Sounds like your for fixing the problem, you just want a D to be the one to do it?
The China situation is ALOT like N.Korea. Its a shitty deal but previous decades of presidents just keep kicking the can down the road. Eventually it has to be fixed, maintain the course can send you into an iceberg.

Farmers and business groups warn trade war with China will wreck Trump country: ‘This has to stop’President Donald
Trump is scaring the agricultural and manufacturing sectors of the economy as the United States and China outline detailed plans for sweeping tariffs.
China’s threatened retaliation against last night’s U.S. tariff proposal is testing
both the patience and optimism of families who are facing the worst agricultural economy in 16 years.
This has to stop.”
Soybean farmers in Iowa worry about long-term damage from Trump’s trade war.
“Short term, the volley of proposed tariffs between the countries will negatively impact soybean prices,”
the Iowa Soybean Association said in a statement (https://www.iasoybeans.com/news/news-releases/iowa-soybean-association-statement-on-china-announcement-of-tariffs-on-u-s-soybeans).
“Long-term, an ongoing trade dispute with China risks stoking anti-Americanism sentiment that could
jeopardize the strength of trade relations between the two countries –
relationships that have taken U.S. soybean farmers nearly 35 years to develop.”
“We have already seen soybean futures down nearly 40 cents as of this morning,” says Minnesota Soybean CEO Tom Slunecka.
“That’s more than a billion dollars lost in value for our crop just this morning.
unilaterally imposing $50 billion of new tariffs without a long-term strategy that leads to economic reforms in China will only hurt America’s businesses, workers, and families.”

Illinois hog farmer Brian Duncan told (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-china-tariffs-illinois-farmers-20180402-story.html) the Chicago Tribune (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-china-tariffs-illinois-farmers-20180402-story.html):
“We were hoping it was just brinkmanship and cooler heads would prevail.
But instead, some of our worst fears seem to be coming true,” said Duncan, who’s also vice president of the Illinois Farm Bureau.
“This is significant, real and serious for rural America.”
That was before Wednesday, when China announced another round of retaliatory tariffs (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/china-fires-back-at-trump-with-tariffs-on-106-us-products-including-soybeans-cars/2018/04/04/338134f4-37d8-11e8-b57c-9445cc4dfa5e_story.html?utm_term=.b862f989ea4d) on more than 100 products worth $50 billion, including soybeans, cars, chemicals and airplanes.
Amid tumbling stocks and fretting farmers—a loyal Trump voting bloc—
the man who sits in the Oval Office demonstrated his trademark casual cluelessness for the concerns of anyone but himself.
"We are not in a trade war with China," he declared (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/981492087328792577) on Twitter Wednesday morning. :lol
One out of every 3 soybeans grown in the U.S. is exported to China,
largely to feed a rapidly growing hog industry for a booming middle class in China, said Rincker, who’s also a board member of the Illinois Soybean Association.
That amounted to
more than $14 billion in soybean exports to China in 2016
, according to the American Soybean Association.
Illinois was the top soybean-producing state in 2017, with about $3 billion in exports, according to estimates from the Illinois Soybean Association. China is the largest export market for whole soybeans.
China targeted soybeans for a reason:
Eight of the biggest soybean exporting states voted for Trump in 2016,

In another headline induced plunge.
The market absorbed new of the first two rounds. A third round is now threatened that is larger than the two other threatened rounds. Beijing will absolutely not back down, and the tariff threats are playing very well with domestic Chinese audiences, who want their government to stand up to the US.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/china-says-fight-back-cost-against-u-trade-063945463--finance.html
It is bluster and a negotiating tack. The Chinese know this as well.
Trump will get some token concessions, so that he can give people like TSA and Chris talking points, and will play it up as a big win.
Pointless of course, because threats will not have been necessary to win minor concessions. Again, it plays well with the brainwashed Trumpist cult.

was AT&T pressured to hire more minorities? SATX has a way of staying the status quo... SATX is always on the verge of big things but reality is totally different except for those like myself that have been here forever. as much as things change here they really just stay the same with more highways, more construction, more people, no innovation and even less excitement.

at the moment i can't remember their name... i tried all yesterday to remember as well and i heard them stories numerous times over but can't remember. if i do remember i will post the name. i believe the company name started with a D but i might be wrong and just associating it with the street it was on which was datapoint. it's bugging the hell out of me that i can't remember the name.
my grandfather worked at Burrows back in the day too on room sized mainframes but i think that was in another state. pretty rad photos he showed me as well as stories. Said Burrows taught him a ton, Compaq sucked and was horribly mismanaged, but that place here in SATX was so innovative it made him do double takes daily.

So after years of financial problems... a meeting at the White House over, say exchanging recipes I'm sure, and all sorts of loans start appearing for Kushner.
And somebody found the cash for a payment to buy his building back.
I wonder where that money came from:
Guess Jared Kushner Found $89 Million In His Couch Cushions To Buy Back His Devil Building! Huh!
Jared Kushner has got some ‘splainin’ to do! His family is all the way underwater on their 666 devil building in Manhattan, with income only covering half of its annual payments, and an ugly $1.4 BILLION payment looming next year. American firms wouldn’t touch the deal, so the Kushners hit up Chinese and Qatari lenders and even sanctioned Russian state banks (allegedly) in a desperate bid to refinance their loan. Things were looking pretty bleak and then HOSANNA, SOMEHOW the Kush Klan is in negotiations to buy out its business partner in the building, Vornado, for up to $89 mill! Where did the money come from? NOBODY KNOWS AND WE HAVE QUESTIONS. And so does Robert Mueller, we’re guessing.
Read more at https://wonkette.com/632453/guess-jared-kushner-found-89-million-in-his-couch-cushions-to-buy-back-his-devil-building-huh#VaKFcodV6SRa0xpD.99
April 2017: Hey, Qatar! Got a Spare Billion?
[Qatar says that Kushner can't have a loan]

It's not a fantasy. I don't ever think about pointing a gun at someone. Most others don't either. Quite the contrary. A guy with a body guard doesn't dream of beating up people. It's the opposite. Few will want to start anything with him.
The threat of a conflict, whether it's a full fledged war or a guy in the backyard pulling a gun on a cop is a bigger intimidator than the actual event.
I literally have only used any of my guns like twice in the last six months. Probably about 6 shots. But ST will keep insisting that I'm a gun nut, radical right wing terrorist or whatever the buzz word is because I believe that is a huge reason the United States of America is as free as it is today.

China finds U.S. sorghum damaging domestic industry
BEIJING, April 17 (Reuters) - China will require CHS Inc and other U.S. companies to put down a big deposit for sorghum shipments to the country after finding the U.S. grain has damaged the domestic industry, Beijing said on Tuesday in a preliminary antidumping ruling.
The move follows a launch of an anti-dumping investigation just over two months ago and will likely stir trade tensions between the world’s top two economies.
The deposit will be as high as 178.6 percent of the value of any U.S. sorghum imports by China and is effective from Wednesday, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement as it continues its investigation.
The government found the domestic industry was “substantially damaged” by U.S. imports that are being dumped into the country, it said

LATEST US SANCTIONS SEND RIPPLES FAR BEYOND RUSSIA
Blanket sanctions against billionaire Oleg Deripaska’s aluminum empire look set to have an impact across the global commodity market,
while restrictions on major figures in Russia’s energy and industrial sectors could also create widespread complications for Western partners.
Friday’s salvo against 24 Russians and 14 companies bans U.S. citizens from doing business with them.
But it also for the first time extends that restriction to non-Americans who “knowingly facilitate significant transactions …
for or on behalf of [them],”
a proviso that means the sanctions’ impact on global trade will likely be deeper than previous curbs.
It could make banks and commodity houses wary of conducting any U.S. dollar–denominated transactions with those linked to sanctioned entities, lawyers say,
creating ripples across the wider commodity industry (https://www.ozy.com/fast-forward/bigger-than-google/6616) in which Russia plays an oversize role.

Exclusive: U.S. sorghum armada U-turns at sea after China tariffs
Several ships carrying cargoes of sorghum from the United States to China have changed course since Beijing slapped hefty anti-dumping deposits on U.S. imports of the grain, trade sources and a Reuters analysis of export and shipping data showed.
The supply-chain pain felt by sorghum suppliers on the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans underscores how quickly the mounting trade tensions between the U.S. and China can impact the global agricultural sector, which has been reeling from low commodity prices amid a global grains glut.
Twenty ships carrying over 1.2 million tonnes of U.S. sorghum are on the water, according to export inspections data from the USDA’s Federal Grain Inspection Service.
Of the armada, valued at more than $216 million, at least
five changed course within hours of China’s announcing tariffs on U.S. sorghum imports on Tuesday,

Sorghum was an end around for China to import feed. Everytime they want to to drive prices down they would announce a new regulation or tariff. I can't remember when but China put a huge tariff on DDG'S. Those are the protein rich by product of ethanol. Sorgum was not included in that so that became a very desirable niche product for China. Part of that expired last fall. Sorgum is very similar to corn. Imagine a more drought tolerant, less yielding version of corn.
The tariff China put on DDGs was in the Obama administration era. This was not part of the last few months. This ticky tack bullshit has been goin on for a long time. General US population just noticing it now though.

Trash's fascistic war the press aided by his tariff war on free trade
Newsprint Tariffs Will Cost Major Chains Tens Of Millions Of Dollars
The Tampa Bay Times laid off 50 people last week.
Management blamed the action on tariffs levied against newsprint imported from Canada to the U.S. That bump in prices will cost Tampa $3 million a year.
Major newspaper chains face expenses that will be much higher, although these expenses are weighed against larger revenue
Several large newspaper chains will face the largest increases in newsprint prices in absolute dollars.
These are Gannett (NYSE: GCI), tronc (NASDAQ: TRNC), hedge fund owned Digital First Media, which just laid off dozens of people in Denver and on the West Coast, Hearst, Advance Media, McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) and Gatehouse Media.
Among them, they own most of the large newspapers in America and hundreds of newspapers in aggregate.
Each of these companies has newsprint demand much larger than that of The Tampa Bay Times.
These companies operate on razor-thin margins, often less than 5% based on net income.
McClatchy, for example, had net income before taxes of $4 million in the fourth quarter on $245 million in revenue.

As steel tariffs squeeze U.S. businesses, uncertainty threatens economic growth
"We're in the dark, just like everybody else," said an executive of a West Coast steel importer.
"This administration has been supposedly pro-business, but business doesn't like uncertainty," groused a distributor of stainless steel, who, like others, requested anonymity to avoid antagonizing officials.
the outlook has turned hazy for many — downright bleak for some.
The tariffs have brought higher prices for many manufacturers and construction firms
and considerable uncertainty for both importers and domestic manufacturers of steel and aluminum.
When Trump issued the tariff orders, he gave temporary exemptions to a handful of the biggest steel and aluminum exporters to the United States, including Canada, Mexico, Brazil and the European Union. But those exemptions are set to expire on Tuesday.
At the same time, the
Commerce Department is supposed to rule on hundreds of requests for exemptions from U.S. manufacturers
who say that domestic firms can't supply the particular types of metals they need.
As of the weekend, the
Commerce Department had posted tariff-exclusion requests (https://www.regulations.gov/searchResults?rpp=25&po=0&s=bis-2018-0006&fp=true&ns=true) for about 650 steel importers,
but roughly 5,000 more hadn't been publicly listed on its website,
including some that were submitted more than a month ago.

Trump delays metal tariffs on Canada, EU, Mexico, exempts some others
U.S. President Donald Trump has postponed the imposition of steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada, the European Union and Mexico until June 1, and
has reached agreements for permanent exemptions for Argentina, Australia and Brazil,
The decisions came just hours before temporary exemptions from the tariffs on these countries were set to expire at 12:01 a.m. (0401 GMT) on Tuesday.
“The administration is also extending negotiations with Canada, Mexico, and the European Union for a final 30 days.
In all of these negotiations, the administration is focused on quotas that will restrain imports, prevent transshipment, and protect the national security,”
there would be no further extensions beyond June 1 to stave off tariffs. :lol wanna bet? :lol

US sanctions against Chinese mobe maker ZTE have forced the company to go into zombie mode as
it can’t get the electronic components it needs from American suppliers.
Last month, the US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) imposed seven years of sanctions (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/04/16/us_bans_zte/) on ZTE

Collateral carnage as ZTE sanctions see Australia’s top telco dump mobe-maker
Telstra bins own-brand phones, seeks alternative supplier
Australia’s largest and dominant telco, Telstra, has stopped selling the ZTE devices it sold under its own brand.
Telstra blamed (https://exchange.telstra.com.au/stop-sell-zte/) US sanctions recently imposed (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/04/16/us_bans_zte/) on ZTE that prevent the Chinese mobe-maker from acquiring parts made by US companies.
ZTE halted its production lines (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/05/09/zte_ceases_operations/) as a result, saying that it just can’t build anything without US-derived parts.
Telstra’s become collateral damage, saying the US ruling “prevents ZTE from manufacturing devices for our range.”
It’s therefore stopped sales of 22 ZTE-made-but-Telstra-branded handsets and mobile broadband devices.
READ MORE (https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/04/20/zte_contests_us_trade_ban/)
Which will hurt:
Telstra’s own-brand kit doesn’t top sales charts, but the fact
the company’s got 22 on the books shows it values this kind of product.
The carrier will likely have plenty of these on the shelves in its warehouses and retail stores and has already started to assure existing users that their phones will keep working.

ZTE to USA: Sure, ban us, but you cannot afford such victories
We’ve done everything you asked - even implemented SAP - pleads Chinese vendor
ZTE on Friday published a riposte in which it argues it has tried really, really hard to improve its export compliance capability (http://www.zte.com.cn/global/about/press-center/news/201804CZY/20180420-1) –
even to the extent of implementing SAP – and
co-operated with US authorities on an ongoing investigation.
The company’s statement said:
“It is unacceptable that BIS insists on unfairly imposing the most severe penalty on ZTE
even before the completion of investigation of facts,
ignoring the continuous diligent work of ZTE and
the progress we have made on export compliance."
The company also notes that ZTE has punished employees responsible for past misdeeds and that
an independent investigation remains incomplete.”
It points out that the ban
“will not only severely impact the survival and development of ZTE, but
will also cause damages to all partners of ZTE including a large number of U.S. companies.”
share price dips in the wake of the ban for US companies Acacia Communications and Qualcomm, as both count(ed) ZTE among their larger clients.
ZTE will have little trouble finding other suppliers, and China has encouraged its own semiconductor industry to smarten up. China already favours local suppliers and the ban could give it reason to accelerate their development to ensure ZTE remains viable.

Exports from California Ports Surged in April on Trade Unease
Outbound container volumes at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach reached a 13-month high, a sign shippers want to move goods “before the gates close”
https://si.wsj.net/public/resources/images/B3-AK363_portLB_M_20180514142453.jpg
Shipments from the biggest U.S. West Coast ports to Asia are picking up steam in a sign that companies are stepping up orders ahead of anticipated new trade restrictions.
Loaded container exports from the neighboring ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach jumped 12% year-over-year in April from a year ago to 306,503 20-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, a shipping-industry measure of shipment volume.
That made April the biggest month for exports at the largest seaport complex in North America since March 2017.
“Anxiety is driving the export trade,”
said Jock O’Connell, an international trade economist based in California. China represents roughly half of the exports that move through Southern California’s ports, Mr. O’Connell said.

Japan is reportedly planning retaliatory tariffs against the US
The government is preparing to notify the World Trade Organization of the plan, a necessary procedure under global trade rules, this week, NHK said.
Japan is the only major U.S. ally that did not receive exemptions
from Trump's tariff decision, which came as a shock given Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's close ties with the president.
Japan (https://www.cnbc.com/japan/) is considering slapping tariffs on U.S. (https://www.cnbc.com/united-states/) exports worth $409 million in retaliation
against steel and aluminium import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump (https://www.cnbc.com/donald-trump/), public broadcaster NHK said on Thursday.
The move is likely to be part of efforts to have Washington add Japan to a list of countries exempted from the U.S. tariffs.

China drops US sorghum dumping probe amid signs of trade thaw
Beijing's announcement that it was ending its investigation, which effectively halted a trade worth roughly $1.1 billion last year, came hours after U.S. officials said China was offering a package to slash the U.S. trade deficit by up to $200 billion.
Another person familiar with the ongoing trade talks said the package may include some elimination of Chinese tariffs already in place on about $4 billion worth of U.S. farm products including fruit, nuts, pork, wine and sorghum.

A farmer plants sorghum on his farm in Stanton County, Kan.
China said on Friday it was dropping an anti-dumping probe into imports of U.S. sorghum, a conciliatory gesture as top officials meet in Washington in an effort to head off a trade war between the world's two biggest economies.
Beijing's announcement that it was ending its investigation, which effectively halted a trade worth roughly $1.1 billion last year, came hours after U.S. officials familiar with the matter said China was offering a package to slash the U.S. trade deficit by up to $200 billion.
"The imposition of anti-dumping and anti-subsidy measures on imports of sorghum originating from the United States would have a widespread impact on consumer living costs, and does not
accord with the public interest," China's Commerce Ministry said in a statement.
News of China's offer of trade concessions and increased purchases of American goods came during the first of two days of U.S.-China trade talks in Washington focused on resolving tariff threats between the two countries. However, it was not immediately clear how the total value was determined.
One of the U.S. sources said U.S. aircraft maker Boeing would be a major beneficiary of the Chinese offer to narrow the trade gap if Trump were to accept it. Boeing is the largest U.S. exporter and already sells about a quarter of its commercial aircraft to Chinese customers.
Another person familiar with the talks said the package may include some elimination of Chinese tariffs already in place on about $4 billion worth of U.S. farm products including fruit,
nuts, pork, wine and sorghum.
A White House statement described the meetings as part of "ongoing trade discussions" and said Trump met the Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier Liu He and the U.S. team led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
"The United States officials conveyed the President's clear goal for a fair trading relationship with China," the White House said.
The top-line number in the Chinese offer would largely match a request presented to Chinese officials by Trump administration officials in Beijing two weeks ago.
But getting to a $200 billion reduction of the U.S. China trade deficit on a sustainable basis would require a massive change in the composition of trade between the two countries.
The U.S. goods deficit was $375 billion last year. The United States' two biggest exports to China were aircraft at $16 billion last year, and soybeans, at $12 billion.
Sorghum surprise
The United States shipped 4.76 million tonnes of sorghum to China in 2017, worth around $1.1 billion, accounting for the bulk of Chinese imports of the grain used in animal feed and Chinese liquor.
In April, China forced U.S. sorghum exporters to put up a 178.6 percent deposit on the value of sorghum shipments to the country after launching an investigation in February following Trump's imposition of steep tariffs on imports of solar panels and washing machines.
"China has taught a lesson to the United States and showed how it can hurt U.S. exports," said Ole Houe, director of advisory services at brokerage IKON Commodities in Sydney.
"Now they are showing goodwill by halting its anti-dumping investigation into sorghum imports, but it is a cheap way of showing goodwill as the U.S. doesn't have much sorghum left to export. The next U.S. sorghum crop will be harvested in August," Houe said.
Some China trade watchers expressed scepticism that a $200 billion reduction in the trade gap could be achieved quickly and said the offer may include repackaged commitments previously announced by China.
"That's an enormous number and it suggests that there could be some impressively ambitious accounting," said Scott Mulhauser, a former chief of staff at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and U.S. Export-Import Bank official who now advises companies on trade issues.
Agreeing to a deal focused primarily on reducing the trade deficit could also weaken Trump's original tariff goal of pressuring China to end policies that his administration says are aimed at misappropriating U.S. technology — a bigger structural change for China's state-driven economic model.
The U.S. officials did not have details on China's demands in exchange for the concessions.

Seems like a strategic move to me. Trump has proven the US can't be a stable trading partner, so they are shifting their orders to people who are, I would guess.
This may be part of a long term move by China away from US agriculture.

U.S. launches national security probe of vehicle imports
The Trump administration on Wednesday launched a national security investigation into car and truck imports that could lead to new U.S. tariffs similar to those imposed on imported steel and aluminum in March.
The Commerce Department said the probe under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 would investigate whether vehicle and parts imports were threatening the industry’s health and ability to research and develop new, advanced technologies.
“There is evidence suggesting that, for decades, imports from abroad have eroded our domestic auto industry,”
Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement, promising a “thorough, fair and transparent investigation.”

Higher tariffs could be particularly painful for Asian automakers including Toyota Motor Corp, Nissan Motor Co, Honda Motor Co and Hyundai Motor Co, which count the United States as a key market, and
the announcement sparked a broad sell-off in automakers’ shares across the region.
In addition to recently imposed 25 percent tariffs on steel and 10 percent tariffs on aluminum imports, the administration has threatened tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods over intellectual property complaints, and Beijing has vowed to respond.

U.S. to impose tariffs on EU steel, aluminum
U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross was due to hold a news briefing at 9 a.m. (1300 GMT) to announce “Section 232” national security-related tariff modifications
German magazine Wirtschaftswoche reported on Thursday that
Trump had told French President Emmanuel Macron he wanted to stick to his trade policy long enough that
Mercedes-Benz cars were no longer cruising through New York, :lol realistic! :lol
news that dented share prices in BMW (BMWG.DE (https://uk.reuters.com/business/quotes/overview?symbol=BMWG.DE)), Daimler (DAIGn.DE (https://uk.reuters.com/business/quotes/overview?symbol=DAIGn.DE)) and Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE (https://uk.reuters.com/business/quotes/overview?symbol=VOWG_p.DE)).
The Trump administration launched a national security investigation last week into car and truck imports, using the same 1962 law that he has applied to curb incoming steel and aluminum.
“It’s entirely up to U.S authorities whether they want to enter into a trade conflict with their biggest partner, Europe,”
Le Maire told reporters after the meeting.
Europe did not want a trade war, he said, but Washington had to back down from “unjustified, unjustifiable and dangerous tariffs”. The European Union would respond with “all necessary measures” if the United States imposed them.
Ross hinted that tariffs were coming.
“If there is an escalation it will be because the EU would have decided to retaliate,”
he told French daily Le Figaro.
“The next question would be: how will the president react? You saw his reaction when China decided to retaliate.”

Trump’s Steel Tariffs Incite Retaliation From Mexico And Canada
Mexico announced it would be imposing its own tariffs, with support from Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Mexico’s retaliatory tariffs target pork legs, apples, grapes and cheeses as well as steel -
products from U.S. heartland states that supported Trump in the 2016 election.
“Because, in the end, the effect will fall on voters and citizens that live in districts where the people have a voice and vote in the (U.S.) Congress.”
Guajardo said retaliation was aimed at products chosen to hit districts with important lawmakers who had been warning Trump not to mess with Mexico. He estimated the U.S. tariffs would affect $4 billion in trade between the two countries.
“It is a sad day for international trade,” Guajardo said. “But hey, the decision was made, and we always said that we were going to be ready to react.”
Mexico buys more steel and aluminum from the United States than it sells. It is the top buyer of U.S. aluminum and the second-biggest buyer of U.S. steel, :lol

"Psychopath's Trade War": Critics Denounce Trump's Reckless Tariffs on Mexico, EU, and Canada
"It simply makes no sense to start a trade war with Canada, the European Union and others who are engaged in fair trade, are not cheating and where workers are paid a living wage with good benefits," argued Sanders
EU and Canada on Friday filed formal complaints (https://globalnews.ca/news/4248573/canada-wto-challenge-eu-trade-war/)with the World Trade Organization claiming the penalties imposed by the Trump administration are a violation of standing trade agreements.
Mexico also responded to the tariffs with new penalties on imports of U.S. goods traveling over the southern U.S. border.
For his part, Sachs characterized Trump's imposition of tariffs as "blatantly illegal," but said there is also something more concerning at play:
Trump's so-called policies are not really policies.
Trade wars are on, off, on hold, on again, within the span of days.
Summits are on, canceled, or maybe on.
Foreign companies are sanctioned today and rescued the next.
He says one day (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-03/trump-says-he-wants-u-s-troops-to-get-out-of-syria-soon) he would like to see overseas troops called home soon, and tells them to stay the nex (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/04/04/us-troops-stay-syria-now-despite-donald-trumps-withdrawal-calls/)t.
Global agreements and rules are ripped to shreds.
Trump's garbled syntax and disorganized thoughts are impossible to follow.
The US has probably never before had
a delusional President,
one who speaks gibberish,
insults those around him including his closest associates, and
baffles the world.
By instinct,
we strive to make sense of Trump's nonsense, implicitly assuming some hidden strategy.
There is none.
"Trump creates chaos for no reason other than his own flagrant inability to follow rules or respect the interests of others,"
Sachs writes.
"The result will be to
undermine the long-term role of the dollar;
ratchet up the public debt; and
undermine the current expansion through a spiral of protectionist measures and rising uncertainties for business."

On Friday, citing national security, Trump ordered the Energy Department tocompel power-grid operators to buy from ailing coal and nuclear plants that otherwise would be forced to shut down because of competition from cheaper sources.
The order came one day after the president imposed historic metals tariffs on some of the country’s strongest allies and trading partners. Now the Commerce Department is further picking winners and losers as it weighs thousands of requests from companies for waivers from the import taxes.
“It replaces the invisible hand with the government hand,” said Mary Lovely, a Syracuse University economist. “You’re replacing the market with government fiat.”

“One of the reasons tariffs are not good policy in general is that it is a form of corporate welfare,” said Stephen Moore, an economist at the Heritage Foundation. “You’re saying consumers will have to pay more so this auto company or steel company or aluminum company stays in business. Canada's tariffs designed "strategically to exert maximum pain politically for the president" (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/6/1/1768754/-Canada-s-tariffs-designed-strategically-to-exert-maximum-pain-politically-for-the-president)
"This list was clearly drawn strategically to exert maximum pain politically for the president,"
said Maryscott Greenwood of the Canadian American Business Council.
"The idea is, you look at a map of the congressional districts of the United States, you look at which members of Congress are in leadership positions and then you look at the big industries in those districts and then you draw up your list accordingly," she said. "And this list was clearly drawn up with this in mind."
…
Take Paul Ryan, the Republican Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. He represents a district in Wisconsin where there is significant cucumber and gherkin industry.
That state also has a large dairy industry, which could help explain why yogurt was added to the list.
But Wisconsin is also home to a manufacturing plant and distribution centres belonging to the Toro Company, the owner of several lawn mower manufacturers that sell to Canada.
Which probably explains why "mowers for lawns, parks or sports-grounds" were added to the list.
Also on the list:
whiskey from Kentucky,
orange juice from Florida, and
chocolate, toilet paper, and paper towels from Pennsylvania, which is home to Hershey’s chocolate and Scott paper companies.
Gordon Ritchie, a trade expert who negotiated Canada's first free trade agreement with the U.S., says that
Canada’s list of tariffs "is the best executed trade countermeasure I've seen in 50 years.
But the Trump action is sheer, utter idiocy."
Canadians have an elegant concept of reciprocity.

Tariffs amount to corporate welfare. That's compounded by the government picking winners and losers through the waiver process.
Fine and well, Trumpalos, just don't pretend that's free market capitalism.

DJT thinks the pressure will result in better deals, but it may result in pissed off allies, broken deals and broken trust, to say nothing of unintended consequences for US businesses and consumers.
