shit is cray, and very fucked up
1251538798292467712The Trump Administration has been in essence blockading states by seizing PPE and tests, some of which are distrbuted to other states, some of which join the federal stockpile, and some of which go to Jared Kushner's list of preferred vendors to sell to the states.
Wrt PPE and testing materials, there seems to be a de facto state of war between the Trump Administration and US States.

One one hand, you criticize the president for doing nothing, then when he does something you comment that he should leave it to the states. Look at NY. How did that work out?

If seizing supplies is part if the plan, the states should be notified, so they don't waste time and money on stuff Trump is just going to take away from them anyway. It's terrible project management.

A FEMA spokeswoman denied seizing any states' shipments, but told The Times that "prioritizing PPE deliveries to COVID hot spots can have the unintended consequence of disrupting the regular supply chain deliveries to other areas of the country."
States hoard as well. Texas has what, 300 or so deaths? NY has 20K (will have by the time I post this). Should Texas be able to get tons of PPE for backfill while NY is using garbage bags? This is where the feds come in and divert to FEMA for distribution.
Shit or get off the pot. Do you want states in charge of their own shit or the feds in charge of all states' shit?

Hyped Malaria Pill Doesn’t Help Clear Coronavirus in Study
Hydroxychloroquine, the 65-year-old malaria drug that President Donald Trump has praised (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-14/trump-repeats-call-for-anti-malaria-drug-to-treat-coronavirus), appeared not to help patients get rid of the pathogen in a small study.
The pill didn’t help patients clear the virus better than standard care and was much more likely to cause side effects, according to a study of 150 hospitalized patients by doctors at 16 centers in China.
The drug did help alleviate some clinical symptoms of Covid-19, however, and
the patients who took it showed a greater drop in C-reactive protein, a measure of inflammation.
“This study doesn’t show any signal,
so it is probably unlikely that it will be of clinical benefit.”

Majority Fear U.S. Coronavirus Restrictions Will Be Lifted Too Quickly
The poll, which was released Sunday,
shows 58 percent of registered voters (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6842659-200203-NBCWSJ-April-Poll-4-19-20-Release.html) are most concerned the country could move too quickly on lifting the restrictions that were put in place to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
In contrast, 32 percent said they were worried about the economic impact of waiting too long to get things moving again.
The split along partisan lines is pretty stark,
with 77 percent of Democrats and
only 39 percent of Republicans saying they were concerned about reopening too quickly.
Only 19 percent of Democrats said they were more worried about
the economic impact, compared to 48 percent of Republicans.

Illinois' governor organized secret flights to bring masks and gloves from China out of fear Trump would seize them
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker organized secret flights bringing millions of masks and gloves to the state from China on charter jets in an effort to bypass potential Trump administration efforts to seize the products, The Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Two invoices from the state revealed $888,275 purchases for "aircraft charter flight to Shanghai, China for COVID-19 response," according to the newspaper.
The state has reportedly spent $174 million on coronavirus-related purchases, such as ventilators, personal protective equipment, and hand sanitizer.
The Sun-Times cited a source familiar with the purchases, who said the details were kept secret "because we've heard reports of Trump trying to take PPE in China and when it gets to the United States."
Pritzker's press secretary declined to give the newspapers details on the flights, but noted the "challenges" Illinois has faced to obtain PPE for frontline health care workers.

The Lancet publishes blistering editorial criticizing Trump's COVID-19 response
"In hard-hit states such as New York, although hundreds of COVID-19 deaths are still occurring daily,
hospital admissions appear to have plateaued.
Credit might be due to effective physical distancing measures that limit community mobility.
But progress in preventing the spread of COVID-19 has come with economic havoc—
at least 17 million Americans are unemployed, a number that could ultimately surpass the Great Depression, and
take years to correct.
A new impasse is forming around the Trump administration's eagerness to boost the economy by lifting restrictions,
just as mitigation efforts by the states are yielding results.
The degree to which the USA stalled in taking aggressive action to curtail the spread of COVID-19 is directly the product of
an administration marked by consistently poor timing,
intent on making decisions in favour of economic interests
instead of those that are guided by science and to protect health.
The rush to reopen the country puts dollars over deaths.

FEMA seizes PPE from a distributor, lies about it and leaves it on a dock at JFK.
Once he got a lawyer involved, FEMA finally sent him something in writing, explaining his equipment was being held under the authority of the Defense Production Act.
He said his customers include nursing facilities, first responders and the state of Michigan.
In an emailed statement, FEMA reportedly told the Delaware News Journal that reports of the agency commandeering or rerouting supplies were “false.”
Such in-demand equipment “being distributed internally within the United States is not being seized,” FEMA reportedly said.
Gianforcaro, meanwhile, shared a written order with the newspaper in which FEMA directed Indutex to sell to the federal government “all filtering facepiece respirators, including the N95 respirators contained within shipment number 8994645378 that arrived at JFK Airport” on April 6.
The FEMA document also ordered Indutex to “set aside” all N95 or surgical masks that it acquires during the coronavirus emergency for a potential sale to FEMA.
It said the masks would be sent to the Strategic National Stockpile.
FEMA did not respond to follow-up questions about the paperwork, the newspaper reported.https://www.nydailynews.com/coronavirus/ny-delaware-company-says-fema-seized-mask-shipments-amid-coronavirus-20200421-3yz7dks53fbl7jlrjhuq2xokyu-story.html

Several posters have criticized those raising the point about the feds seizing state orders of PPE -- even though Trump explicitly shirked responsibility onto the states. They've made that point, along with the same needling of MSM. All of which raises the question: Does anyone think the Trump administration is doing a good job handling the pandemic? If yes, what metric are you using to gauge his effectiveness? If no, what's the point of criticizing something that patently seems like a horrible and hypocritical "policy" decision.

Damn son, thanks. I've been slogging through Horizon Zero Dawn, and it's been a disappointment. Bloodborne seems more up my alley, so I'll give it a go next.
If you do get Bloodborne, two critical things to know:
1. You must get at least one point of insight to be able to level your character up at all. I spent about five hours spinning my wheels in the game before getting that first point of insight and finally being able to progress since I didn't know I needed it. Easiest way to do it is to run to one of the bosses, who will likely kill you but you still get the insight.
2. The DLC is phenomenal and is a must if you're enjoying the game. Don't put off getting it until after you beat the base game though, since then you'll have to work your way to the DLC in a second playthrough.
If you liked the Sigrun fight in God of War I'm pretty confident you'll enjoy the Bloodborne DLC.

Nassim Taleb featured in New Yorker:
Nassim Taleb is “irritated,” he told Bloomberg Television on March 31st, whenever the coronavirus pandemic is referred to as a “black swan,” the term he coined for an unpredictable, rare, catastrophic event, in his best-selling 2007 book of that title. “The Black Swan” was meant to explain why, in a networked world, we need to change business practices and social norms—not, as he recently told me, to provide “a cliché for any bad thing that surprises us.” Besides, the pandemic was wholly predictable—he, like Bill Gates, Laurie Garrett, and others, had predicted it—a white swan if ever there was one. “We issued our warning that, effectively, you should kill it in the egg,” Taleb told Bloomberg. Governments “did not want to spend pennies in January; now they are going to spend trillions.”
The warning that he referred to appeared in a January 26th paper that he co-authored with Joseph Norman and Yaneer Bar-Yam, when the virus was still mainly confined to China. The paper cautions that, owing to “increased connectivity,” the spread will be “nonlinear”—two key contributors to Taleb’s anxiety. For statisticians, “nonlinearity” describes events very much like a pandemic: an output disproportionate to known inputs (the structure and growth of pathogens, say), owing to both unknown and unknowable inputs (their incubation periods in humans, or random mutations), or eccentric interaction among various inputs (wet markets and airplane travel), or exponential growth (from networked human contact), or all three.
The New Yorker’s coronavirus news coverage and analysis are free for all readers.
“These are ruin problems,” the paper states, exposure to which “leads to a certain eventual extinction.” The authors call for “drastically pruning contact networks,” and other measures that we now associate with sheltering in place and social distancing. “Decision-makers must act swiftly,” the authors conclude, “and avoid the fallacy that to have an appropriate respect for uncertainty in the face of possible irreversible catastrophe amounts to ‘paranoia.’ ” (“Had we used masks then”—in late January—“we could have saved ourselves the stimulus,” Taleb told me.)https://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/the-pandemic-isnt-a-black-swan-but-a-portent-of-a-more-fragile-global-system

Trump shows a total inability to have empathy or remorse when confronted with consequences of his actions
“I interviewed someone who said that his family got sick, they went to a funeral in mid-March, and,
they said — mainly — because the president wasn’t taking it [the coronavirus] seriously,” she explained.
“He said: ‘If the president had had a mask on, if he was saying we should stay home, then I would have stayed home. Instead —'”
“Well, I know, I understand—” Trump said, trying to cut in, but Alcindor continued.
“He said his family members were sick because they listened to you,” she said.
“Do you feel like you, or are you concerned that downplaying the virus maybe got some people sick?”
“And a lot of people love Trump, right?” he said. :lol
Of course, from the account Alcindor gave, it seemed
the family in question may have been fans of the president themselves — at least until they got sick.
“A lot of people love me,” Trump continued. :lol
“You see them all the time, right?
I guess I’m here for a reason, you know?
To the best of my knowledge, I won.

One million masks seized in Florida:
Miami-Dade’s emergency arm was close to taking possession of 1 million N95 masks last week, but the shipment was “taken” by the federal government, WLRN reported.
Frank Rollason, Miami-Dade’s emergency director, described the shipment as “hijacked” by federal authorities during a desperate dash to secure medical-grade masks needed to protect first-responders and front-line workers from the spread of COVID-19.
“We were going to meet the plane and actually take them. That’s like gold, you know. But we got the word from the company that they had been taken from the federal government,” Frank Rollason, the director of Emergency Management for the county, told WLRN.https://amp.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/article242224601.html

This Trump presser is just amazing. He's constantly repeating we "must open the country up" and "the cure must not be worse than the problem" while the death toll and new case toll is spiking on an hourly basis.
The only rational sense this makes is that he knows he's heavily leveraged and going to be bankrupt before November.
What a country, 50,000 dead is less important than a seventh Trump bankruptcy to 30% of the population.

Kushner-backed program chartering flights to address hospital shortages raises questions in Congress
A flight from China chartered by the U.S. government (https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-pushes-economic-reopening-health-risks-key-questions/story?id=70186206) touched down at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Wednesday last week. Inside were nearly 6 million surgical masks (https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/300-us-hospitals-warn-supply-shortages-coronavirus-fight/story?id=70003733) and some respiratory equipment.
But the supplies on board weren’t tucked into the national stockpile (https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-signed-defense-production-act-case/story?id=69670828) or distributed by the federal government among cities hardest hit by novel coronavirus (https://abcnews.go.com/Health/Coronavirus) despite the average taxpayer bill of $750,000 to $800,000 per flight.
the masks and other life-saving equipment were owned by Medline, one of the nation’s largest privately held manufacturers and distributors of medical supplies. They were loaded onto cargo trucks and driven to the company’s warehouse in suburban Chicago.
It was up to Medline to decide who gets the protective gear and what price they would pay.
The sole federal requirement imposed on Medline was that it would promise to sell half its cargo to designated "hot spots" facing outbreaks of the coronavirus.
Medline says it is currently selling protective gear at a loss and isn't charging extra for the expedited processing. :lol
"All the product is ours, until it goes to our customers," :lol
part of a new unprecedented public-private partnership called "Project Airbridge,"
The program, championed by White House adviser Jared Kushner (https://abcnews.go.com/alerts/trump-administration) and run by Rear Adm. John Polowczyk,
Kushner told reporters this month that his mandate was to break down barriers for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is coordinating the federal response to novel coronavirus.
Democrats who question whether the federal government has gone too far in deferring to the industry amid a nationwide pandemic and given contractors an outsized role in controlling the nation’s supply chain.
"The supply chain was broken to begin with, and they’re putting these (materials) back into the supply chain with no idea where it’s going"
"We have literally wasted six weeks getting ourselves ramped up because we stood on the sidelines and allowed the private sector to manage itself instead of coming up with a centralized strategy,"
"I’m not here to disrupt a supply chain," Polowczyk told reporters earlier this month. :lol
https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/kushner-backed-program-charters-flights-medical-supplies-behalf/story?id=70291872 (https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/kushner-backed-program-charters-flights-medical-supplies-behalf/story?id=70291872)

‘Complete disbelief’:
Governors blindside front-line staff with abrupt reopening plans
without the input and against the wishes of their own medical and emergency management staff.
Georgia’s Republican governor, Brian Kemp ... without receiving guidance from the panel of doctors tapped to advise him and without giving advance notice to regional health departments responsible for carrying out his orders,
In Utah, the governor lifted a statewide lockdown on elective procedures before his medical supply team had finished estimating how quickly hospitals would exhaust their supply of personal protective equipment, according to members of the state’s response team.
plans to ease restrictions on economic activity and public assembly in Tennessee have been met by dread among emergency management officials, who are in “complete disbelief that we are reopening the state,”
Kemp, for example, did not seek consensus among the doctors on his task force before proceeding with his reopening plan
“I have great concerns about federal and some state pressure to reopen the economy without the guidance of the public-health data,” said Erin Mendenhall, the Democratic mayor of Salt Lake City. “No one doubts the gravity of this economic crisis, but the cost of human life is also grave.”
Trump administration’s guidelines are so vague as to sanction potentially any strategy, no matter how hasty.

Why does this keep happening?
This time to the VA.
For weeks, nurses and other employees at Veterans Affairs hospitals have said they were working with inadequate protective gear. VA officials denied it.
But in an interview, the physician in charge of the country’s largest health-care system acknowledged the shortage — and said masks and other supplies are being diverted for the national stockpile.
“I had 5 million masks incoming that disappeared,” said Richard Stone, executive in charge of the sprawling Veterans Health Administration. He acknowledged that he’s been forced to move to “austerity levels” at some hospitals.
Stone said the Federal Emergency Management Agency directed vendors with equipment on order from VA to instead send it to FEMA to replenish the government’s rapidly depleting emergency stockpile.https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/va-health-chief-acknowledges-a-shortage-of-protective-gear-for-its-hospital-workers/2020/04/24/4c1bcd5e-84bf-11ea-ae26-989cfce1c7c7_story.html#click=https://t.co/PxLkCAvoEC

Just listened to Birx on Meet The Press
Birx is a godsend.
Chuck Todd was trying to bait her into criticism.
This lady is concerned with the task.
She understands exactly how she can be helpful in HER SITUATION and she understands a great deal about all the nuances in different areas from testing, to the biology of the virus to the epidemiology. Other experts are going to get their spots to criticize and be seen. Birx knows she is dealing with an administration that sparks various grass roots nutty populist mobs (see Spurter and TGY) and so she sticks to what she can control. She explained very clearly where we have made breakthroughs, where we need to make breakthroughs, how the modeling is becoming more accurate, and new studies concerning the virus externally and internally that might indicate good or bad news. She has a very good overview of all aspects.
If we could just get Trumo to shut the f up and have her dealing more with governors on science issues and opening problems and solutions for various counties I would feel much better about this.
BTW she basically explained where the president went massively adrift in his disinfectant UV light shitshow without calling him out. Very deft move and now I understand more about him. He basically takes in pieces of info well, but then forgets what the parameters of the pieces are and applies them to the wrong situations.
We need to have someone literally gag this man because he just can’t do this science stuff, he just can’t.

The presidential thing to do qould be to have them less often and delegate to public health officials. He can always filibuster on Twitter.

We need her.
Thats apparent.
She is doing a very difficult job well. She can avoid the politics and get right down to the problems and solutions to a fairly wide variety of problems. If you asked her about reopening restaurants she would go through the science of what she knows about how it spreads and then say that people who understand restaurant food preparation, spacing, etc... need to apply this is because I am not an expert on how restaurants operate as they appear to be diverse. Mayors who would like suggestions we have this set up for answering your questions concerning what might be safest practices.
(And I imagine it goes something like: serve outside with distancing rules and all sorts of suggestions concerning employees and food processing and preparation; which MIGHT make it ridiculous to even try it right now in certain localities or even most localities)

She explained they had a very encouraging recent briefing about the virus possibly becoming inactive very rapidly under UV light and some good news about disinfectant research EXTERNALLY.
My take is Trump took this info well and again went on a bad sales pitch, or just completely lost track of what situation it could be applied to. And of course a 10 yo old understands this but Birx understands him and has a horribly difficult job but is deft.
What we DO NOT WANT is for her to get as frustrated as we are and quit or get fired.

Since March 25, the Queens nursing home has admitted 17 patients from hospitals who tested positive for coronavirus, but in a bitter irony, most of them have fared well, the exec said. Those who have died passed away without a test or while awaiting the results from one.
“The rest of the people are dropping like flies — literally like flies — and most of them have been with us for years,” the exec added.
COVID-19 has killed at least 3,540 residents of New York’s nursing homes and adult care facilities as of Wednesday, according to the most recent state Health Department data.

AND you don’t get it, she has said exactly what needed to be said without crossing Trump.
If you want her crossing him, and then getting fired, you think like a piece of celery.
So who is next up for you as a speaker in her place, Ivanka?
Just So she kills enough people that team blue gets in?

Do you really believe that people are injecting bleach and Lysol into their bodies to fight the Coronavirus? Do you really believe that anyone heard Trump's comments and went out and did this? Lets use our brains for a minute here and agree that it was a stupid thing for Trump to say. It certainly belongs in the HOF for stupidest comments ever by a sitting president.
Lets also agree that it is equally stupid for anyone to think that someone heard those comments and thought, gee, i need to go drink some bleach. WTF? another one? Jared and his frat rats still at it?
San Francisco mayor says city's PPE orders have been diverted, confiscated
San Francisco Mayor London Breed (D) said Friday that her city’s orders for personal protection equipment (PPE) have been diverted to other U.S. cities and foreign countries.
“We’ve had issues of our orders being relocated by our suppliers in China,” she said at a press conference (https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2573&v=G-RqQhnk_-k&feature=emb_logo). “For example,
we had isolation gowns on their way to San Francisco and they were diverted to France.
We’ve had situations when
things we’ve ordered that have gone through Customs were confiscated by FEMA to be diverted to other locations.
"Through Customs, we’ve had situations where those
items have been taken and put out on the market for the highest bidder,
putting cities against cities and states against states."
We have the money to purchase the PPE, why can’t we purchase the PPE?”
an avalanche of criticism from mayors and governors across the country who say the federal government needs to do a better job of making equipment accessible.
“You can't have the states competing against the states, and
then by the way, when the federal government goes out to buy the same equipment for their stockpile,
now it's 50 states competing against the states and the federal government competing against the states,”

Dr. Richard Besser, a former acting C.D.C. director and an E.I.S. alumnus, explained to me, “If you have a politician on the stage, there’s a very real risk that half the nation is going to do the opposite of what they say.” During the H1N1 outbreak of 2009—which caused some twelve thousand American deaths, infections in every state, and seven hundred school closings—Besser and his successor at the C.D.C., Dr. Tom Frieden, gave more than a hundred press briefings. President Barack Obama spoke publicly about the outbreak only a few times, and generally limited himself to telling people to heed scientific experts and promising not to let politics distort the government’s response. “The Bush Administration did a good job of creating the infrastructure so that we can respond,” Obama said at the start of the pandemic, and then echoed the sohco by urging families, “Wash your hands when you shake hands. Cover your mouth when you cough. I know it sounds trivial, but it makes a huge difference.”At no time did Obama recommend particular medical treatments, nor did he forecast specifics about when the pandemic would end.

is WHY we are where we are!
For 3 plus fucking years YOU came in here and were nothing but an apologist every time trump shit in your mouth
now 55000 dead americans later....
YOU want to be an apologist for the spineless pieces of shit surrounding this criminal incompetent murderer
this is why we are fucked
does your 5 year old dictate to YOU how to run your life?
I sure hope not- i sure hope when he does something untoward or improper or makes a child dictator demand- that you patiently TEACH him that his actions will NOT be tolerated.
BIrks is a fucking professional (or she used to be)
all she has to do is have integrity and tell the truth - trump or no trump
if he does something dangerous and she defends him, shields him, lies for him, whatever
she deems herself WORTHLESS!
all she had to say was “ you will have to ask thenpresident what he meant - as far as science - one should NEVER injest ANY dangerous chemical internally”
instead she went above and beyond and tried to paint the piece of shit infant in a nicer light
why?
because she is no longer credible.
3 years ago you repeatedly gave trump the benefit of the doubt
he shit in your mouth for 3 years and now 55000 are dead and you are still pussyfooting around with his stupid infant act.
Im a Trump apologist...
Sure.
You are some sort of kamikaze pilot.
I dont like that game. If you were actually responsible for playing this game you would rather see people die.

I genuinely think he wants the death count as high as possible to use against Trump in November. That's the only way his stance could make any logical sense and it's fucking sociopathic. I mean god I would love it if chloroquine turns out to be a cure, I could give a shit less if Trump could do six months of victory laps on the way to a landslide victory in November if it saves hundreds of thousands of American lives and turns the pandemic into something manageable.

I’m not sure you can hold NY entirely to blame for their situation relative to Seattle. They got hit through the backdoor, Europe, where people weren’t paying attention. They were thoroughly seeded before the first case came to attention, 400,000 people, a high percentage on international flights, per day come through Kennedy and Newark airports. From first case identified to lockdown they were the quickest of any state, things just exploded fast there. They have had one consistent spokesperson, Cuomo who has followed the health official game-plan with apparently cooperation of NYers far better than almost all other state. Id much prefer Cuomo leading the effort than the numb nuts politician we have innTexas.

If their ignorance leads them to pushing back against scientific based lock downs, wouldn't it simply be self defense? Akin to some idiot drilling a hole in the bottom of a lifeboat...
I have consistently seen the sentiment on the part of modern conservative that liberals are evil incarnate, and have personally had my death wished here and elsewhere for my views.
Still, I wish them not to die. At the same time, if they do, given the active threat that some of them pose, I am not going to waste much emotional energy mourning them, other than a sense of pity and outrage at a propaganda system that would be so harmful as to lead people to self-destructive behavior.

Over the past two weeks Kushner has been notably removed from coronavirus-related operations,
One official working in the White House said it was “unclear” exactly what he and his team had actually done over the last two weeks.
Another individual familiar with Kushner’s work said they hadn’t received updates from his team in “about a week.”
“He muddied up a process that was really not needing a fix,”
“What that does is disempower FEMA
because if at any moment Jared or one of his henchmen demand assets to be redistributed at their discretion,
FEMA’s planning gets disrupted.
I’ve never seen operations on something this scale being run out of the White House.
Usually it’s policy and communications that they handle… but
you would never run logistical operations out of the White House.”

Viruses though, tend to be some of the most abstract things that most students struggle with.
My guess is that last part will change next year. The literary trope handed out in the mid 1980s was that viruses tested the definition of life. Unable to move, unable to replicate without a host cell. They do not eat or eliminate.
have no energy metabolism, they do not grow, they no waste products, they do not respond to stimuli, and they do not reproduce independently. In the view of biologists, they are not alive. Viruses consist of a central core of either DNA or RNA surrounded by a coating of protein.

‘No consequences for negligence that kills’: McConnell wants corporate immunity from Covid-19 lawsuits
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is demanding that Congress use the next Covid-19 stimulus bill

The literary trope handed out in the mid 1980s was that viruses tested the definition of life. Unable to move, unable to replicate without a host cell. They do not eat or eliminate.
Eukaryotic cells (everything alive other than bacteria), prokaryotic cells (bacteria), viruses (not cells)
Thats it. Only Eukaryotic cells can be multicellular. So multicellular (division of labor), unicellular (better be able to do it all on your own for your world; niche)
I dont think the above is that difficult. But RG's wife is a teacher so maybe he can tell us what a 9th or 10 th grader cant get.
Discuss the differences between them, and I dont believe this to be abstract at all unless abstract means you cannot see any of the above with a human eye except some giant Eukaryotic protists. If this is abstract, then chemistry must be horribly abstract.
A much more abstract subject imo would be discussing the mechanisms of Evolution in a biology class.
And yep they do go into it in a Biology book I found on the internet used by High Schools in Texas. But its really a list they likely dont understand except maybe natural selection.

President’s intelligence briefing book repeatedly cited virus threat
U.S. intelligence agencies issued warnings about the novel coronavirus (https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/02/28/what-you-need-know-about-coronavirus/?tid=lk_inline_manual_1&itid=lk_inline_manual_1)
in more than a dozen classified briefings
prepared for President Trump in January and February, months during which he continued to play down the threat
For weeks, the PDB — as the report is known —
traced the virus’s spread around the globe,
made clear that China was suppressing information about the contagion’s transmissibility and lethal toll, and
raised the prospect of dire political and economic consequences.
the president, who routinely skips reading the PDB and
has at times shown little patience for even the oral summary he takes two or three times per week
part of a broader collection of worrisome signals that came during a period now regarded by many public health officials and other experts as
a squandered opportunity to contain the outbreak.

How Trump and His Team Covered Up the Coronavirus in Five Days
The president and senior officials manipulated Americans and played down the severity of the pandemic.
Over the last five days of February, President Trump and senior officials did something more sinister:
They engaged in a cover-up.
insight into how several members of the president’s team were willing to manipulate Americans even when so many lives were at stake.
the president wanted to fire (https://www.wsj.com/articles/health-chiefs-early-missteps-set-back-coronavirus-response-11587570514) the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s top expert on viral respiratory diseases, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, during this period helps put the pieces of the puzzle together.
What was her offense to the president?
Dr. Messonnier spoke (https://www.statnews.com/2020/02/25/cdc-expects-community-spread-of-coronavirus-as-top-official-warns-disruptions-could-be-severe/) frankly.
“We want to make sure the American public is prepared,” she said,
what she told her children that morning:
“We as a family ought to be preparing for significant disruption to our lives.”
At the time, senior officials knew the coronavirus was an extreme threat to Americans.
Thanks to information streaming in from U.S. intelligence agencies for months,
officials reportedly believed that a “cataclysmic (https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/intelligence-report-warned-coronavirus-crisis-early-november-sources/story?id=70031273)” disease could infect 100 million Americans (https://www.axios.com/exclusive-navarro-deaths-coronavirus-memos-january-da3f08fb-dce1-4f69-89b5-ea048f8382a9.html) and discussed lockdown plans (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/11/us/politics/coronavirus-trump-response.html).
The warnings were given to Mr. Trump
in his daily brief (https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/intelligence-report-warned-coronavirus-crisis-early-november-sources/story?id=70031273) by the intelligence community;
in calls (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/us-intelligence-reports-from-january-and-february-warned-about-a-likely-pandemic/2020/03/20/299d8cda-6ad5-11ea-b5f1-a5a804158597_story.html) from Alex Azar, the secretary of health; and
in memos (https://www.axios.com/exclusive-navarro-deaths-coronavirus-memos-january-da3f08fb-dce1-4f69-89b5-ea048f8382a9.html) from his economic adviser Peter Navarro.
the military’s National Center for Medical Intelligence
raised (https://apnews.com/da45eec432d6ff4cc9e0825531e454a6) the warning level inside the government to WATCHCON1,
concluding that the coronavirus was
imminently likely to develop into a full-blown pandemic.
But the White House did not want the American public to know.
the president’s top advisers took to the airwaves with a united purpose: to deny the truth.
Mr. Azar ... discussed Dr. Messonnier’s comments (https://www.c-span.org/video/?469708-1/hhs-officials-hold-news-conference-coronavirus).
“We’re trying to engage in radical transparency with the American public as we go through this,” :lol
But within 20 seconds of that statement, he uttered state propaganda.
“Thanks to the president and this team’s aggressive containment efforts,” he said, coronavirus “is contained.”
Larry Kudlow, ... in direct response to Dr. Messonnier’s comments, told (https://youtu.be/U5XiKVZJRuU) CNBC:
“We have contained this. I won’t say airtight, but pretty close to airtight.”
the president to lie (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-vice-president-pence-members-coronavirus-task-force-press-conference/) to the public.
“You have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.
That’s a pretty good job we’ve done,”
He and Mr. Azar would continue to make such assurances over the next two days
for five days, the president along with some of his closest senior officials disseminated an egregiously false message to Americans.
The messaging would continue well beyond those days
until the stark images of refrigerated morgue trucks and
spiked lines on colored graphs showed the escalating numbers of cases and dead.

Bro you can look at my post history to see that other than the begining of COVID, I have barely posted here for years. Sorry I"m not here to feed your bullshit. Its funny you think I care about your opinion. My post was saying that Fauci was right to to say 100k was a good estimate because the doubling pace we were on showed that we were going to hit 150k by the end of the month.
We have about 2.5k deaths right now. Assuming a slow 4 day doubling time for deaths (I think it'll be faster), in ~3 weeks we hit 150k dead. Thats why Fauci's numbers seem appropriate.
Just ask yourself this, if I was making a prediction of 150k by the end of April, why the fuck would I think Fauci's numbers of 100k total seemed appropriate? How does that add up?
You really don't understand exponential growth which is why you think that the difference between ~60k and 150k at the end result of an exponential curve is a big difference. It's not, but all you see is the 90k difference. Its the matter of about 1 doubling, One of the biggest problems with how the American people perceive this is that they really don't understand how close we were to this being multiple times worse on the first wave much less how bad subsequent waves will be. This also means that if we had not fucked around for a month, or even just reacted a week or two earlier, this could have been multiple times less deadly. That means 30-40k could have been saved if the idiots in charge would have listened to the experts a week or two earlier. But no, they have dumb fucks like you rooting them on. Good job.

It can't stay there forever with a virus outbreak since eventually the number of recovered+dead is enough to make it into a much tamer increasing curve with fewer targets for the virus (assuming immunity after getting it), but with it doubtful even 2% of our population is infected there is still plenty of time for nasty exponential growth before transition to a less nasty but still very steep growth.

Good job.
Look, if you want to give me an L, feel free my dude. Spike the ball, keep mentioning me every week so that when I eventually do log back into Spurstalk I'll have like 5 notifications from you again. Rent free as a motherfucker, TBH.
Part of a really good series on the alt-right. Highly recommend the channel. Even-handed and the guy does his research. The bit on the origins of modern conservatism was very good as well.

‘What the hell does this mean?’ Financial reporters aghast at White House’s ‘off the wall’ plan to punish China
“some administration officials have also discussed having
the U.S. cancel part of its debt obligations to China,”
which makes it sound like they are considering a sovereign default on U.S. debt.
“Does the US owe bilateral debt to China???
Or are they literally talking about defaulting on US Treasury bonds?”
“And self-destructive. And globally destabilizing.”
there is no way the administration will even consider this plan given that it would immediately send markets into a global meltdown.
“I have no idea what they mean by “voiding” US debt obligations to China,” he wrote on Twitter (https://twitter.com/morningmoneyben/status/1255891083353079808).
“The Chinese own $1.1 trillion in Treasury securities.
Any effort to ‘void’ that would create unfathomable market chaos.
It simply cannot be done under any circumstances.”

absolutely has blood on his hands...
and
so do the GOP who had overwhelming evidence to convict him and remove him just two months ago
and chose to cover up his criminality
they could have saved tens of thousands of lives
all they had to do - was their sworn duty.

White House, Congress have not given any hazard pay to the medical workers they call heroes
The trillions in federal relief money has not included raises for front-line workers.
Many also don’t get paid sick leave because of a legislative exclusion.
a proposal to offer such aid has not been seriously considered during negotiations over any of the four bills approved by Congress to respond to the novel coronavirus
More than 45 nurses (https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/nurses-read-names-of-colleagues-who-died-of-the-coronavirus-in-front-of-the-white-house/2020/04/21/fc93184c-83e6-11ea-878a-86477a724bdb_story.html?tid=lk_inline_manual_14&itid=lk_inline_manual_14) in the United States have died of covid-19, the disease the novel coronavirus causes, while at least a half-dozen doctors (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/paloma/the-health-202/2020/04/16/the-health-202-coronavirus-is-sickening-thousands-of-medical-workers/5e972f6988e0fa101a763966/?tid=lk_inline_manual_14&itid=lk_inline_manual_14) have died in states including Arizona, Michigan, Florida and New York.
numerous hospitals across the country have slashed pay for nurses and doctors,
as the suspension of elective surgeries drains health-care companies of a vital source of revenue.
Health-care systems in California, Maine, Minnesota and Colorado have all announced pay cuts or furloughs to their employees.
Stanford Health Care announced pay cuts this week of up to 20 percent for roughly 14,000 health-care workers, including personnel responding to the coronavirus (https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/02/28/what-you-need-know-about-coronavirus/?tid=lk_inline_manual_15&itid=lk_inline_manual_15).

Trash stiff another supplier? totally in character. Trash has built his career on stiffing, cheating, defrauding.
That is so monumentally stupid.
Yet so plausible.
Yet another "that is where we are" moment. fuck.
Injecting bleach and defaulting on bonds.

Trash loses election, 51 -49, refuses to concede, claims Ms of fraudulent Dem voters, contests the election, demands recount, refuses to leave the WH.
That would be time for some Salvador Allende treatment.

As Trump claims US has best Covid-19 testing in the world, :lol :lol
Capitol physician says he lacks capacity to test all 100 senators :lol :lol
“We don’t have the capability to do a large-scale test,” Dr. Brian Monahan said in a conference call with GOP officials
“My test result can take between two and seven business days to resolve,” said Monahan, who noted that
he doesn’t have access to the rapid tests used by the White House to test the president, vice president, and other executive branch officials.
Monahan told Republican officials that he will only be able to test senators and staffers who are showing symptoms.

Under Jared's rule with his McKinsey/frat rat boys
Trump administration ‘wasted’ the last month — and the results are ‘devastating’: disaster relief expert
President Donald Trump made April the month to “stop the spread” :lol of COVID-19 in the United States —
but disaster relief expert Jeremy Konyndyk believes the administration utterly failed to make real progress.
summarizing how the administration’s efforts have only put the United States on a plateau when it comes to new coronavirus cases.
the federal government wasted April much as it wasted February,”
without competent federal leadership, the best we are managing is to tread water.”
“It looks like US-style lockdowns are enough to freeze transmission in place (R=1)
but not enough to drive it down (R<1),"
"Which suggests that without further measures (more on that in a sec),
we could remain on this plateau for quite a while.
That of course would be devastating."
he expresses little hope that it will actually take his recommendations.
"The way forward is very clear: test, trace, isolate, protect,"
"Putting that infrastructure into place can
bring down cases to a manageable level,
enable us to relax lockdowns, and
move to a posture of sustainable suppression.
But that will be tough to deliver without the feds."
