You understand the mechanics of how a bill is passed, but you’re ignorant of the politics. Otherwise you wouldn’t be anchored to your stupid arguments itt.

Or, you just want to rodeo with anonymous men on the internet.

It’s one or the other. Either way, it’s pathetic. have fun!

You find me on the regular and start your shit talking, then get duly regulated, at which point you pretend you have pressing matters to attend to :lol

If you buy car and on day 3 it doesn't start, do you really give a shit about the inner workings of the vehicle or do you just want a car that will run? If the party cannot get it's agenda passed, it's a car that won't run. It doesn't matter how green the manufacturing of the car was at that point.

That analogy is ridiculous. The impetus of the discussion was Mitch acknowledging his party had no legislative agenda for the mid-terms. When EN wiped his ass with your ridiculous both sides argument you shifted your argument to the dem's inability to pass their legislative agenda so you could continue to ride the EN rodeo as you're clearly a glutton for punishment. You never win arguments. You just shift your position until the other poster get's sick of playing rodeo and then you're on the next one. And you're running 3 or 4 of these rodeos simultaneously.

:lol at you regulating anything. You're a fucking clown.

Repugs, decades of dirty tricks

Project Veritas told Biden they'd publish his daughter's diary unless he gave them an on-camera interview

Those being scrutinized include

current and former operatives for the conservative group Project Veritas (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/11/us/politics/project-veritas-journalism-political-spying.html);

a donor Mr. Trump appointed to a political position in the final days of his administration;

a man who once pleaded guilty in a money laundering scheme;

and a financially struggling mother of two,

James O’Keefe, was pulled from his apartment in his underwear and handcuffed during a dawn raid last month (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/06/us/politics/james-okeefe-project-veritas-ashley-biden.html) by the F.B.I., two days after a pair of his former employees had their homes raided.

according to people familiar with federal grand jury subpoenas

"On October 16, 2020, Project Veritas wrote to Mr. Biden and his campaign that it had obtained a diary Ms. Biden had 'abandoned' and

wanted to question Mr. Biden on camera about its contents that referred specifically to him,"

Project Veritas chief legal officer Jered Ede, who told the campaign that

"should we not hear from you by Tuesday, October 20, 2020,

we will have no choice :lol

but to act unilaterally and reserve the right to disclose that you refused our offer to provide answers to the questions raised by your daughter."

Members of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol believe that former Texas Governor and Trump Energy Secretary Rick Perry was the author of a text message sent to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows the day after the 2020 election pushing an "AGRESSIVE (sic) STRATEGY" for three state legislatures to ignore the will of their voters and deliver their states' electors to Donald Trump, three sources familiar with the House Committee investigation tell CNN.

"Imagine competing commanders in chief —

Worse, imagine politicians at the state and federal levels illegally

The instructor then told the students not to tell anyone about it.

One student, who is Jewish, was told to play Adolf Hitler, and

At the end of the reenactment, the Jewish student was then told to pretend to kill themselves.

How you feel about it does matter, if you vote. If you've ever managed a group of people, you likely looked for results, not just agendas. You probably didn't give everyone a stellar review because they had an agenda, if their results were less than stellar. You cannot blame all the shortcomings on the other party, when people in your own party are in-fighting and thwarting the "agenda". As much as I despise party line politics, it's effective to meet agendas.

But they don't fail to become law because of the other party, when you have a majority in both the house and senate. Someone on your team is pissing in the water. "We tried" keeps being the sounding call of the democrats. "There were just too many of them".. when people within the democratic party are thwarting progress.

That's a bit of a strawman. You don't need everybody on board. Failing to pass legislation introduced by your party because your own people vote "present" doesn't equate to losing because not every single person was on board. It means there was enough people not onboard, and often that's known well in advance. It seems much of the process is a dog and pony show for voters. Both sides do it, but the dems seem particularly adept at it, much to the chagrin of many voters (even here when posters criticize the left for being inept).

Same with all of these things. It seems like just another turn at fleecing the public to funnel wealth to the few. This has been happening for decades, maybe longer. There are things that need funded like roads and bridges, airports and such, but so much of it will instead go to shady, hard to follow mazes of money distributions.

Assault weapons were never banned. Only the manufacture for sale to the public of firearms after the date of the bill was banned. This is why many dem voters are so easily duped.

From Wiki

The 10-year ban was passed by the US Congress on September 13, 1994, following a close 52–48 vote in the US Senate, and was signed into law by US President Bill Clinton on the same day. The ban applied only to weapons manufactured after the date of the ban's enactment. It expired on September 13, 2004, in accordance with its sunset provision. Several constitutional challenges were filed against provisions of the ban, but all were rejected by the courts. There were multiple attempts to renew the ban, but none succeeded.

Studies have shown the ban had little effect on overall criminal activity, firearm homicides, and the lethality of gun crimes. There is tentative evidence that the frequency of mass shootings may have slightly decreased while the ban was in effect.[1]

Placebo legislation isn't really addressing the agenda, which was to ban assault style weapons, since they were never banned. No one who owned one, no store who sold them, no gunshow.. ever had to stop selling them. They just couldn't buy new ones for a period of time.

Sometimes you need an excessive asshole to deal with a group of assholes.

Sans COVID Trump wins easily, there's less voter turnout and you're looking at Trump season 2. He had everything going for him (other than his mouth) that spells re-election.

This gonna have to wait until the new year when I’m not typing on my phone, tbh, but generally circles around the same theme: this started from having a legislative agenda (a priority list of items), to getting it done, to how effective it is/was once they got it done.

Look, I happen to manage a lot of people and projects. It all always starts with an idea and a plan. If you don’t have one, we won’t even call you back. Not all those ideas and plans get a green light, not all those projects end up getting done and even those that get done aren’t always a commercial success. But they’re all completely different steps in a long process.

Here we’re discussing the first step, what are the ideas and how they plan to get them done. People clearly agree and disagree with them being a priority, and also agree/disagree how to fund them and how to get them done, but there’s little mistaking what the priorities are.

He chose his targets “because of their statements expressing that then-President Trump had lost the 2020 presidential election,” the Department of Justice said in a press release (https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/california-man-sentenced-3-years-prison-making-threats-against-political-officials-and) Monday. He told a family member of one journalist that he and others were “nearby, armed and ready” to take action against them.

Lemke also sent threatening messages on Jan. 6, as supporters of Donald Trump overran the Capitol building in an attempt to stop Congress from counting the Electoral College votes and certifying Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 presidential election.

As that attack was ongoing, Lemke sent threatening text messages to a family member of a journalist, stating: “[The Journalist’s] words are putting you and your family at risk. We are nearby, armed and ready. Thousands of us are active/retired law enforcement, military, etc. That’s how we do it.”
That day, Lemke also targeted a New York city-based member of Congress, sending a message to the representative’s brother that included a picture of a home in the same neighborhood as the Congressman.

“Your brother is putting your entire family at risk with his lies and other words,” Lemke’s message said. “We are armed and nearby your house. You had better have a word with him. We are not far from his either. Already spoke to [the Congressman’s son] and know where his kids are.”https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/pro-trump-california-man-who-threatened-brian-stelter-don-lemon-and-others-after-bidens-2020-win-is-sentenced-to-prison/

FASCIST GOP 'Tidal Wave' of Voter Suppression Set to Intensify in 2022

The past year saw an undeniable acceleration of the passage of anti-democratic state laws ... with state legislatures enacting more voting restrictions in 2021 than in any year since the organization began tracking such laws in 2011.

Nineteen states passed 34 restrictive laws between January 1 and December 7.

several categories of anti-voting restrictions, including laws

restricting access to voting by mail,

new or expanded voter ID requirements,

the criminalization of "ordinary, lawful behavior by election officials" who try to help voters, and

laws allowing voter purges.

"legislators introduced bills to

allow partisan actors to interfere with election processes or even reject election results entirely,"
... empower state legislatures to reject election results and

Texas's S.B. 7, which would allow elected judges to do the same.

they claim are aimed at maintaining "election integrity" :lol fucking liars

—with 440 restrictive voting laws proposed in 2021—

zero states have found any evidence of widespread voter fraud.

2022, at least

13 bills have been pre-filed in state legislatures in four states—

Arizona, Missouri, New Hampshire, and South Carolina

—meaning they'll receive top priority when the new legislative session begins.

Dozens of what the report called "carryover bills" ... focus on restricting voters' access to mail-in voting.

Pennsylvania and Kansas aim to shorten deadlines for applying for and delivering mail ballots,

while Ohio lawmakers will continue debating whether election workers can assist people who return ballots.

Repug Sturmabteilung

For mainstream liberals in rural America,

daily life involves dealing with far-right intimidation

in these rural red areas where the politics of menace and thuggery have taken over—

sort of an inverted version of the cliché; the rural Biden voter who can barely show his face at the local café. The reality.

All around the Trump-loving rural sectors of the nation,

daily life has become filled with foreboding, intimidation, threats, and ugliness,

all emanating from authoritarian right-wingers directing their aggression at anyone who fails to follow their dictates—

and the intensity has been increasing.

In the past month, Proud Boys and militia “Patriots” have turned up to

harass LGBTQ-friendly teens at libraries,

mask-promoting school board members, and

mall shops that require masks.

White supremacists now openly march in rural capitals, threatening bystanders.

Extra Stout touched on an important point - the donors who get to bask in the glow of their virtue while knowing full well they'll never have to actually deal with the fallout because these notions won't come to fruition. These are the NIMBYs. There are NIMBYs for things other than housing.

There’s a bit of everything, tbh, that’s exactly why I said politics are messy. There’s also a lot of throw shit to the wall (ie green new deal, Romney Medicare voucher program, etc) and see what sticks, which eventually shapes policy. Or legislation that looks more likely to pass which gets changed a million times before it actually gets voted and all the special interests that denounced it now support it because there’s a cutout for them.

Again, going to the very start of this, outside of ‘triggering dem libs’, what are the policy proposals of the current GOP? They had years and years to come up with a healthcare reform plan to replace Barrycare, they still have zero to show (the closest was Dennison promising the best and cheapest healthcare ever, a departure from where the GOP has been traditionally in healthcare, and when a law needed to materialize it didn’t). Anti-immigration is a political position, but where was the legislation to back it up? Everything got done by executive order.

Things like this used to be substantially more clear in the past. You had Paul Ryan, for example, doing Cato’s work in economic policy and legislation, or the gang of 8 senators looking at immigration reform. This doesn’t automatically means I support every Democratic policy position or legislation, but that’s it’s much more clear where that party stands policy-wise if they had the votes to implement them.

Why did republicans need a plan to replace Obamacare? Republicans have always stood by the fact that health insurance should have been left alone. So to answer your question...republicans simply want it to go back to the way it was. You pay for insurance and get to choose your doctor. Simple as that. This ^ obviously glosses over the fact that it was none other than President Reagan who mandated hospitals to provide care (government funded if no insurance was available). Obamacare also largely mirrors Romney’s healthcare plan. Plus it sucks too, since it didn’t deal with cost at all, but that’s a separate conversation.

The reality is that the status quo was politically and economically untenable. You can single-handedly point to Ryan’s plan to turn Medicare into a voucher program costing them Florida. We’re not going back to things like non-coverage of pre-existing conditions (something the GOP is also allegedly on board with too), so the question is what does reform looks like?

So you're saying someone else would foot the bill in a country where I could pay my own way? I don't get what you're saying exactly. How is my freedom restricted because of my employment? I'd be employed with or without insurance. Insurance makes it a bonus to be employed. Mellissa Carone, a GOP anti-"voter fraud" activist who is running for state legislature in Michigan, espoused white supremacist propaganda to supporters on social media.

public schools and the government are trying to 'eliminate' white people in America,"

they’re trying to eliminate the white people in America, particularly the white male in America,'

Carone also criticized the COVID-19 vaccine, statewide shutdowns during the pandemic and

defended insurrectionists who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. "

Carone gained national attention after she served as the star witness for Trump ally Rudy Giuliani during a Michigan hearing on election integrity,

And just to head this off at the pass, me paying 2x income tax != free healthcare.

There’s more than one model out there, you would know if you informed yourself about it and/or lived overseas for long enough. Mixed systems include state run and private hospitals. State run might not provide the absolute best care, so you have an option to pay for a private system that provides a better/more-personalized type of care. But that’s just one example. We ran a gamut of ideas here, from having the state provide basic care but mandate catastrophic insurance, etc. The key point, however, is cost. It’s become clear worldwide, except in the US, that the private health sector will not self-regulate. Even in countries with mixed systems, there a price controls of all types and forms. From one size fits all (Canada, UK) to lists of most common medicines and treatments (Germany) to forced licensing of generics (India).

The taxation part, sure, I don’t think the military is free either, nor are the roads and infrastructure around us. Everybody has an opinion where tax dollars should go to, that’s perfectly valid. The problem with healthcare right now in the US is that we spend way more tax dollars on it per capita than the rest of the world for similar outcomes, so while there’s an argument to be had about taxation, it’s especially important as long as the US refuses to rein in cost. Obamacare did not, so we still have that problem.

What policies? They put out a rushed healthcare plan (nobody seen or talked about it before, and had nothing to do with what Trump campaigned on) that was such a disaster that they themselves scrapped it, and decided to vote for just repeal instead.

Other than that, what was the agenda? Can you name consequential GOP legislation or policy outside the tax cuts?

I liked what Trump campaigned on, I just knew he was full of shit and the GOP would never vote for those things. From ‘bringing manufacturing back’ (people that bought into this don’t really understand how basic economy works), cheap healthcare, his trust funds buddies having to take it in the chin for Main Street… none of those things were ever on any GOP platform. Like ever. So it wasn’t surprising at all when none of that materialized, tbh

DOJ knocks Missouri's 'clear and substantial threat' to public safety

Missouri's law does not nullify federal gun laws within the state —

but it does prohibit state officials from helping federal officials to enforce them,

similar to the model adopted with "sanctuary cities (https://americasvoice.org/blog/what-is-a-sanctuary-city/)" that seek to protect immigrants.

after an Independence police officer was killed in a shootout in September, state law enforcement initially refused routine federal assistance in tracing the murder weapon,

the Missouri state crime lab, operated by the Highway Patrol, also is refusing to process evidence that would help federal firearms prosecutions,"

the Highway Patrol, along with many other agencies, have suspended joint efforts to enforce federal firearms laws."

A number of cities and counties around the country have similarly declared (https://www.uslawshield.com/second-amendment-sanctuaries/) themselves to be

"Second Amendment sanctuaries." :lol

Missouri's statewide law, however, is one of the most extreme and consequential to be enacted so far.

I think you know the policies of the GOP. You added "consequential" as a caveat. I fail to find most policies of either side to be consequential thus the same old same old after every election. The people get excited about it like a change gonna come, but it's just the same wealthy people having their turn at the glory hole of the nation. America First is on the GOP platform however until 2024 they will not have a new one.

Regardless, you already know their policies. You can debate all you want about effectiveness or intention. AFAIK the only tangible product from any POTUS in my lifetime was tax cuts. All else is just going to war or coming from it.

Not sure where you’re going with this, but if your argument is that we as a country haven’t had major structural reforms or programs, that’s certainly false. Most of those other countries also went through reforms and did not have a public health system since their inception. As a matter of fact, that’s exactly one of the roles of government, and why it will have to come from there (besides the government being the biggest consumer of healthcare services and products in this country).

Militarily, economically, social programs/government spending, etc. I have no idea what the current GOP stands for. Pro life and ???. Can’t possibly be Christian values or family values when your standard bearer is a well known adulterer (not that the whole family/religious values was any less hypocritical before then, just plain as a day now). The economy? The last two GOP administrations literally destroyed the economy. On social programs and spending, again the last two red team administrations expanded spending and government with hits like the TSA, Space Force, and completely unfunded Medicare part D. What’s the plan there? More tax cuts? Sabotaging the IRS isn’t an economic plan. ‘Build the wall’ isn’t an immigration policy, it’s the stupidest soundbite I heard in decades.

You used to be able to pick up a document from a conservative think tank like Cato, and get an idea what was the plan. I can’t remember the last time I found one of those that garnered any kind of attention.

I actually think the problem is that there’s nobody that looks semi-educated to grab one of those and explain it. Or it simply has become so unpopular that’s better to just banter about something else.

This is another area where the GOP has transformed mightily. Their most vocal and visible voices are pure idiocy. That’s a trend the previous POTUS started that set this country back at least 50 years, tbh

We can start by enabling Medicare to negotiate drug/services prices (since they’re by far the biggest customer and something the VA is already allowed to do). Follow up with a public option not tied to employment. Let the private sector reform around that. That’s probably the quickest path for the current system, but obviously not the only path. There’s plenty of models to look at and model sensible healthcare reform around.

They stand for protecting their interests, their wealth, their neighborhoods. They disguise that as a strong military, strong borders and bootstraps. That hasn't changed. They couldn't give 2 shits about abortion. In fact, I'd say they hope many segments of the population have even more abortions. Roe v Wade is a voter base concern, so they pretend to be concerned too. Notice how their opinions change based on the political atmosphere? They want to remain in office, not to govern (that's being done at lower levels). They want to be there to set up, ensure and prolong the money pipeline to their wealthy donors. This seems self evident.

So instead of giving a shit about what they believe, I only consider what they will do to sell that façade, and if that will be a pro or con in my world.

I generally don’t vote. I made the first exception to kick Trump out. I’m simply not of the idea of the ‘lesser of two evils’ (that rule was broken the last election, mostly because I really dislike clown shows). I would need to be convinced about thr candidate and that hasn’t happened yet (I mean, fuck, I loathed Biden in the primaries).

Iowa nurses accuse plastic surgeon of menacing them with boasts about ties to Mexican Mafia

Colleagues are coming forward with allegations about 72-year-old Dr. Ronald Bergman, who they say sexually harassed them and bragged he had ties to the Mexican Mafia.

the "creepy" doctor would call women "dumb cunts," "fuckiing morons," and "worthless" to "honey," "sweetie," and his "essential oil."

Bergman showed her nude photos of the woman he was dating, who also worked in the practice.

"He told her that he wanted a ‘young fresh look for his business,’ and while (Swanson) ‘wasn’t bad looking,’ she was ‘too old for the image.'"

doctor boasted he had connections with "the Mexican Mafia," and said,

"those who were not loyal had things happen to them. …

The 'Mexican Mafia' does not ask questions, they just kill."

Peggy West, Bergman allegedly showed her photos of his penis and his nude girlfriend, describing their sexual encounters.

She also overheard him tell a young staffer, "I like your dress! I would like to bend you over an exam table."

when she chastized Bergman's behavior he said, "don’t do anything you’d regret."

In that case too, he brought up his ties to the Mexican Mafia.

Gathering his wife and children close to him as he shared the tragic news, area conservative Dan Gainey, 66, informed his family Tuesday that Critical Race Theory had spread to his liver. “There’s no easy way to say this, but I just got the diagnosis that I have Critical Race Theory, and soon my body will be completely ravaged by it,” said Gainey of the academic movement focused on studying social and cultural issues through the lens of institutional racism that was reportedly metastasizing within him. “I promise you all I’m going to fight like Hell to lick this thing, but the truth is that it’s a pernicious ideology capable of spreading rapidly, so I probably don’t have all that much longer. I just pray it doesn’t spread to my brain—if you ever hear me rambling incoherently about how the inequalities that spurred the civil rights movements are still with us today, I’m begging you right now to put me out of my misery.” At press time, Gainey sought to comfort his crying family with the promise that if they remembered the U.S. was historically the least racist country on Earth, he would always be with them in spirit.https://www.theonion.com/conservative-man-tearfully-informs-family-critical-race-1847149198

This is for all y'all home schoolers

Ex-teacher battles ‘anti-white propaganda’ with his home-school teaching white nationalism

Designed for ages 4 and up, the School of the West (https://www.schoolofthewest.world/)bills itself as an online educational resource for home-schooling families. White families, that is.

The focus is on the study of “white wellbeing,” :lol

within a curriculum of history, math, science, and the arts designed for “Westernkind,” meaning white boys and girls, according to the site,

to help them “develop self-esteem” and “the truth of their heritage.” :lol
The site was launched by a man who refers to himself only as “Brant,” but who The (https://www.thedailybeast.com/page-arizona-ex-teacher-brant-williams-hawks-white-nationalist-homeschooling-online)Daily Beast (https://www.thedailybeast.com/page-arizona-ex-teacher-brant-williams-hawks-white-nationalist-homeschooling-online) and Anti-Defamation League extremism researcher Mark Pitcavage identify as Brant Williams.

Williams says in one of the introductory videos that the site gives parents

an “alternate way of teaching children,” calling the school “a role model” to address “the many problems in the public education system.”

He goes on to list the problems as

“confusing gender roles,”

“forced gender transgenderism,”

“intentional misrepresentation of history,” and of course,

“a ton of anti-white propaganda.”

Repugs brownshirts doing the dirty work

'I hope your family dies in front of you': Rep. Dingell responds to the cruelty Trump has wrought

the ominous Trumpification of our politics. It was, to put it mildly, disturbing.
After Upton brought up the toxic energy that’s animating our politics these days, Bash ran a clip of a voicemail Dingell recently received from a MAGA mite.

VOICEMAIL TO REP. DINGELL:

“You goddamn old senile bitch.

You’re as old and ugly as Biden.

You ought to get the fuck off the planet.

You fucking foul bitch.

They ought to fucking try you for treason, bitch.

You and every one of your scumbag fucking friends.

I hope your family dies in front of you.

I pray to God if you’ve got any children, they die in your face.”

Trumpian tirade (https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/19/politics/donald-trump-debbie-dingell-john-dingell/index.html) that threw open the sluices two years ago.

It came during a December 2019 speech in Dingell’s home state:

“Then you have this Dingell. Dingell. You know Dingell from Michigan, you know Dingell, you ever hear of her, Michigan? Debbie Dingell, that’s a real beauty. So she calls me up like eight months ago. Her husband was there a long time — but I didn’t give him the B treatment. I didn’t give him the C or the D. I could have. Nobody would have – I gave the A+ treatment. ‘Take down the flags!’ ‘Why you taking them down?’ ‘For ex-congressman Dingell.’ ‘Oh OK.’ ‘Do this, do that, do that, rotunda.’ Everything. I gave him everything. That’s OK!

Don’t want anything for it. :lol he wants loyalty!

I don’t need anything for anything. She calls me up. It’s the nicest thing that’s ever happened. ‘Thank you so much.

John should be so thrilled. He’s looking down. He’d be so thrilled. Thank you so much, sir.’ I said, ‘That’s OK, don’t worry about it.’

Maybe he’s looking up. (from hell :lol) I don’t know. I don’t know. maybe. Maybe. But let’s assume he’s looking down.

But I have him A+, not A, not B+, not B. I have him the A+, and she called me, so nice, oh.

I won’t go into the conversation because it’s not fair to do that. :lol

But all you want to say is, let’s put it this way: it was the most profuse thank-you that you could ever get. On a scale of 0 to 10, it was a 10. OK. So that was what, February or something. Now they talk about this phony impeachment.

And she’s out there.

‘Well, we have to look seriously at our president because he may have violated the Constitution of the United States.

And I can’t be happy with that because I love our country. I love this and I love that.’ She loves everything.

I said, ‘She’s a no, OK.’ No but I look at her and she’s so sincere and what happens?

‘I vote to impeach Trump.’

And you know what — I didn’t say — who the hell knew this was even going to come up.

Right-wing's 'hysterical, incendiary and nasty' fundraising emails designed to 'squeeze money out of GOP rubes' slammed

"Let me tip my hat to Sen. John Kennedy (R-Louisiana) for crafting a solicitation worth noticing," Corn writes.

"It appeared in my inbox on Christmas Day, with this

subject head: 'Jellyfish have more brains than the liberals.'
"Hmmm, I thought, I wonder where this will lead? The answer? Nowhere, actually," he adds. "The email began,

'I have hope for my Liberal friends…

jellyfish have survived for more than 165 million years without a brain,

so there is hope for a few of them.'

And…that was the pitch."

"Does Kennedy’s team really believe that it can squeeze money out of GOP rubes by merely comparing liberals to brainless jellyfish?" Corn writes.

"Damn straight they do.

After receiving this email, I searched my inbox and discovered I had received an identical request from Kennedy in September."

"You hate liberals.

I am a US Senator and will call them names.

You will give me money.

Rinse, repeat.

Fascist Repugs Orban-izing state courts

In Assaults on Democracy, State Lawmakers Target Courts

Legislators are trying to weaken state courts’ ability to ensure fair elections.

unprecedented effort by partisan legislators nationwide to undermine or distort the outcomes of future elections, with the past year seeing a

wave of new voter restrictions (https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/voting-laws-roundup-october-2021),

partisan election audits in several states (https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/partisan-election-review-efforts-five-states), and

state-level efforts to sabotage future elections (https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/election-sabotage-scheme-and-how-congress-can-stop-it).

Legislators in 35 states considered at least 153 bills between January 1 and December 10 of this year that would have

limited state courts’ power or independence or

made them more partisan.

Of those bills, at least 19 have become law across 14 states.

at least 12 laws enacted in 9 states this year appear to be targeted at state courts for the role they played — or will play — in election cases.

in Georgia (https://www.legis.ga.gov/legislation/59827), for example, will make it more difficult for some judges in the state to extend polling place hours to accommodate voters because of long lines or other logistical issues.

in Kansas (http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2021_22/measures/hb2332/), Kentucky (https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/record/21rs/hb574.html), and Texas (https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=872&Bill=SB1), also contain provisions that prohibit the judiciary or government officials from altering or suspending state election laws.

laws change who sits on state courts, which courts hear cases involving the state, or make it easier for judges to be targeted for unpopular decisions.

in Montana (http://laws.leg.mt.gov/legprd/LAW0210W%24BSIV.ActionQuery?P_BILL_NO1=140&P_BLTP_BILL_TYP_CD=SB&Z_ACTION=Find&P_SESS=20211), for example, permits the state’s Republican governor to fill vacancies on the state’s supreme court and trial courts without vetting by the state’s independent judicial nominating commission.

Legislators in Montana have accused (https://helenair.com/news/state-and-regional/govt-and-politics/montana-gop-lawmakers-subpoena-supreme-court-justices-administrator/article_9b7c78b6-5882-5697-b771-d85da52c85a6.html) the state’s judges of being “too liberal.”

in Tennessee (https://wapp.capitol.tn.gov/apps/BillInfo/Default.aspx?BillNumber=HB1130), where constitutional challenges and redistricting cases were generally heard by judges in the state’s capital, a new law created a three-judge “court of special appeals” composed of judges from different parts of the state to hear those cases instead.

With the hostility shown by the U.S. Supreme Court (https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2021/07/03/brnovich-alito-roberts-supreme-court-vra/) and many federal courts of appeals (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/17/us/politics/federal-appeals-courts-trump-voting.html) towards voting rights, state courts are only going to become more important — and attract more public attention — as people increasingly turn to them for protection.

Missouri Gov Mike Parson Vows Reporter Who Found Shitty Coding In State Website Will PAY

Back in October, a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch discovered an incredibly stupid security vulnerability on a state website (https://krebsonsecurity.com/2021/10/missouri-governor-vows-to-prosecute-st-louis-post-dispatch-for-reporting-security-vulnerability/).

The site, which was designed so people could easily look up credentials and certifications for more than 100,000 public school teachers, counselors, and administrators,

included a dumb error in its publicly viewable coding that inadvertently left the Social Security numbers of all those employees pretty much right out in the open for any bad person to steal.

No good reporting goes unpunished, so Parson reacted to the story by demanding the reporter and the Post-Dispatch be investigated and prosecuted for "hacking" the state website. (https://krebsonsecurity.com/2021/10/missouri-governor-vows-to-prosecute-st-louis-post-dispatch-for-reporting-security-vulnerability/)

Parson then explained the full weight of Missouri law enforcement would be deployed against the sophisticated right-clicking hacking operation:

This administration is standing up against any and all perpetrators :lol

who attempt to steal personal information and harm Missourians. It is unlawful to access encoded data and systems in order to examine other peoples’ personal information. We are coordinating state resources to respond and utilize all legal methods available.

My administration has notified the Cole County prosecutor of this matter, the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Digital Forensics Unit will also be conducting an investigation of all of those involved.

This incident alone may cost Missouri taxpayers as much as $50 million. :lol This matter is serious. [...]

A hacker is someone who gains unauthorized access to information or content.

This individual did not have permission to do what they did. :lol

They had no authorization to convert and decode the code. :lol

This was clearly a hack. :lol

Parsons said he's pretty sure the Cole County prosecutor will be charging the reporter for his crimes. (https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/parson-says-he-believes-prosecutor-will-bring-charges-in-post-dispatch-case/article_c4d88dae-fbf7-565f-a96c-e3589a626273.html#tracking-source=home-top-story-1)

emails obtained through a public records request showed the

state education department was on the verge of thanking the reporter for alerting it to the vulnerability before Parson demanded vengeance.

Canadian political scientist warns his country must face 'horrible' possibility of US becoming a 'right-wing dictatorship' by 2030

Thomas Homer-Dixon is only about 35 miles from the U.S. border — and in an op-ed published by the Globe and Mail (https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-the-american-polity-is-cracked-and-might-collapse-canada-must-prepare/) on New Year’s Eve,

he grapples with the frightening possibility that Canada’s neighbor to the south could be under a fascist dictatorship (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jan/03/us-rightwing-dictatorship-2030-trump-canada) only eight years from now.

“By 2025, American democracy could collapse, causing extreme domestic political instability, including widespread civil violence,”

“By 2030, if not sooner, the country could be governed by a right-wing dictatorship.

We mustn’t dismiss these possibilities just because they seem ludicrous or too horrible to imagine.”

there will be major implications for Canada.

“Returning to office, he’ll be the wrecking ball that demolishes democracy, but the process will produce a political and social shambles,”

through targeted harassment and dismissal,

he’ll be able to thin the ranks of his movement’s opponents within the state — the bureaucrats, officials and technocrats who oversee the non-partisan functioning of core institutions and abide by the rule of law.

Then, the stage will be set for a more managerially competent ruler, after Mr. Trump, to bring order to the chaos he’s created.”

we must focus on the urgent problem of what to do about the likely unraveling of democracy in the United States.

large segments of the country’s population — mainly the non-white, non-Christian, and educated urban ones — aren’t really equal citizens,”

“They aren’t quite full Americans, or even real Americans.

This is why Mr. Trump’s ‘Big Lie’ that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him — a falsehood that nearly 70% of Republicans now accept as true — is such potent anti-democratic poison.”

That sentiment is felt most acutely by Republicans:

Two-thirds of GOP respondents agree with the verifiably false (https://apnews.com/article/voter-fraud-election-2020-joe-biden-donald-trump-7fcb6f134e528fee8237c7601db3328f) claim that "voter fraud helped Joe Biden win the 2020 election" —

a key pillar of the "Big Lie" (https://www.npr.org/2021/12/23/1065277246/trump-big-lie-jan-6-election) that the election was stolen from former President Donald Trump.

Fewer than half of Republicans say they are willing to accept the results of the 2020 election —

a number that has remained virtually unchanged since we asked the same question (https://www.ipsos.com/sites/default/files/ct/news/documents/2021-01/topline_ipsos_misinformation_poll_011921.pdf) last January.

"There is really a sort of dual reality ;lol there is "reality and there is Repug FANTASY

through which partisans are approaching not only what happened a year ago on Jan. 6,

but also generally with our presidential election and our democracy,"

In fact, at one point, the Christian flag was paraded through the congressional chamber after officials had been evacuated to safety.

MAGAs are turning on each other. :wow

After Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) on Wednesday described the Jan. 6 riot as “a violent terrorist attack on the Capitol,” GOP strategist Karl Rove urged Republicans nationwide to reflect on the first anniversary and show their patriotism by offering “no absolution for those who planned, encouraged and aided the attempt to overthrow our democracy.”

But on Fox News, Tucker Carlson not only mocked the idea that the storming of the Capitol was an insurrection but also accused Cruz and other Republicans of “repeating the talking points that Merrick Garland has written for them.” The attorney general earlier Wednesday vowed to hold accountable all those responsible for the Jan. 6 riot — whether they were at the U.S. Capitol or committed other crimes surrounding the day’s events.

“Every word Ted Cruz uses is used intentionally. He’s a lawyer,” Carlson said Wednesday night. “He described Jan. 6 as a violent terrorist attack. Of all the things Jan. 6 was, it was definitely not a violent terrorist attack. It wasn’t an insurrection. Was it a riot? Sure. It was not a violent terrorist attack. Sorry! So why are you telling us that it was, Ted Cruz?”

https://www.rawstory.com/media-library/marsha-blackburn.png?id=28798044&width=800&height=450

Mathis, who is Black, had his license briefly suspended after he forgot to pay speeding tickets 10 years ago when he was in his 20s. One of the speeding tickets was from him driving five miles per hour over the speed limit.

Blackburn called this an example of Mathis having a "rap sheet," the term used to list arrests and convictions of a criminal history.

Blackburn's speeding ticket rant "unnecessarily humiliating."

Blackburn, who just last year, was allegedly speeding down Constitution Ave. in Washington, D.C. as the members were released on a recess.

Capitol police pulled her over, CNN.com reported (https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/26/politics/marsha-blackburn-capitol-police/index.html).

Blackburn jumped out of the car, identified herself as a U.S. Senator, flashed her member's pin and the officer let her go.

The GOP is suddenly running scared from Trump's Big Lie

Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota,

"The election was fair, as fair as we have seen. We simply did not win the election, as Republicans, for the presidency.

Rounds stuck by his comments.

The former president lost the 2020 election."

GOP Leader Mitch McConnell backed him up (https://www.cnn.com/2022/01/11/politics/mike-rounds-republican-defense/index.html), saying, "I think Sen. Rounds told the truth about what happened in the 2020 election." Sens. Kevin Kramer, R-S.D.,and

John Thune, R-N.D., also agreed with Rounds.

And here's what Utah's Mitt Romney had to say:

Mike Rounds speaks truth knowing that our Republic depends upon it. Republicans like Govs Hutchinson, Baker & Hogan; Sens McConnell, Thune & Johnson; Bush & Cheney; plus 60+ courts and even the right-leaning Wall Street Journal editorial page agree: Joe Biden won the election.

Top Republicans in the Senate are now disputing the central organizing principle of the GOP in 2022: the Big Lie.

other comments make clear what they are concerned about. They are afraid that all this demeaning of the election system

will keep their own voters from the polls

these folks are very worried about Trump's attacks on Republican incumbents and the fringe weirdos he's endorsing to replace them.

Many smart Republicans understood that Trump's insistence that the election was stolen was largely responsible for the loss of the Senate because of the way his lies played out in Georgia with the two Senate runoff races that sent Democrats Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff to Washington.

Auschwitz Memorial Calls Out GOP Congressman for Covid-Nazi Germany Comparison: ‘Exploiting of the Tragedy’

called out Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH) on Wednesday forcomparing Covid-19 pandemic mandates to Nazi Germany.

“Let’s recall that the Nazis dehumanized Jewish people before segregating them, segregated them before imprisoning them, imprisoned them before enslaving them, and enslaved them before massacring them,” he added.

“Dehumanizing and segregation are underway – and wrong.” :lol

The real insidious reason the GOP spread conspiracy theories that don't even make sense

The whole point of these incoherent conspiracy theories is

to create a cloud of bewildering disinformation so thick that

the actual truth gets lost in a maze of lies, hand-waving and fart noises.

they're using the prestige of Congress in order to disseminate their conspiracy theories more widely.

It's a derangement loop that's driving the GOP base further away from reality and deeper into a fascist ideology.

'We're not neutral on Nazism,' Indiana teacher says.

Republican state senator disagrees

https://images.dailykos.com/images/1025351/story_image/2022-01-102.png?1641831757

The Republican assault on the teaching of “divisive concepts” like the existence of racism continues,

and a new bill proposed in Indiana makes it ever more clear that this is an all-out assault on public education itself.

The bill drew attention when one of its co-authors said that teachers should be impartial in teaching about Nazism (https://www.indystar.com/story/news/education/2022/01/06/nazi-scott-baldwin-indiana-facism-education-teachers/9123302002/).

Baldwin took exception to that.

“I have no problem with the education system providing instruction on the existence of” Nazism, fascism, or Marxism, he said.

“I believe that we've gone too far when we take a position on those isms ... We need to be impartial.”

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2022/1/10/2073777/-Indiana-bill-banning-teaching-of-divisive-concepts-lays-bare-the-Republican-war-on-public-schools

No doubt, he requires impartiality on the American Civil War, KKK was bigger in IN than in the South.

Arizona Republican State Representative Jake Hoffman made news this week when it was revealed

he signed a forged “certification” falsely stating Donald Trump (https://www.thedailybeast.com/jake-hoffman-runs-from-questions-about-fake-electors-document-saying-trump-won), not Joe Biden, won his state’s Electoral College electors.

Video that’s gone viral of Hoffman shows him defending signing the forged documents in which he falsely identifies himself as a duly elected elector for Trump.

His defense: “in unprecedented times, unprecedented action does occur.” :lol

He goes on to claim,

called the forged electoral documents “dueling opinions” :lol his "opinion" overrules certified facts :lol

After McConnell implying African-Americans are not Americans

Republicans Prepare Racially Inflammatory Anti-Immigrant Midterm Campaign

700 such ads leading into the 2022 midterms, including attacks against the Biden administration over a so-called “border crisis” and

content designed to undermine a vastly popular pathway to citizenship for the nation’s undocumented communities.

“Increasingly, these ‘border crisis’ attacks are also using Vice President Kamala Harris as their main foil: the border czar,”

“Thirty-seven paid ads invoke the Vice President with xenophobic dogwhistles,

echoed by members of Congress, such as Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and Congressman Mike Johnson (R-LA).

The gender and racial connotations are also quite evident.”

Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) has spent tens of thousands of dollars over the past two months

targeting nearly two dozen House Democrats for their support of popular, pro-immigrant legislation.

The racist Tanton network organization (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/7/19/1873033/-Hate-group-founder-John-Tanton-is-dead-but-his-anti-immigrant-policies-live-on-in-the-Trump-admin) has launched ads against House Democrats

despite the fact that House Republicans also voted in favor (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2021/3/19/2021811/-House-passes-path-to-citizenship-for-DACA-recipients-temporary-status-holders-and-farmworkers) of bills protecting Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients and undocumented farmworkers.

Racism is the Republican mainstream.

House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2021/9/21/2053571/-Stefanik-pushes-racist-ad-that-also-claims-undocumented-immigrants-are-the-real-insurrectionists) and Sen. Rick Scott, who heads the National Republican Senate Committee (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2021/12/8/2068249/-Rick-Scott-s-group-is-busy-vilifying-immigrants-and-with-financial-backing-from-major-companies).

While both voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election in favor of the twice-impeached former president,

Stefanik’s ad stoops to calling undocumented immigrants the real insurrectionists.

Stefanik also echoed the white supremacist “replacement theory” in her ad.

Lindsey Graham, once a Republican champion of comprehensive immigration reform, also echoed racist “invasion” rhetoric.

“Republican and right-wing messages haven’t changed since Trump’s departure,”

“The warning signals to Democrats are clear: It’s immigration today and it’ll be immigration in 2022.”

“While the right-wing playbook is to exacerbate fears over the economy and public health with hyperbole over immigrants and the border,

their strategy fails to shake voters’ strong support for a path to citizenship,”
