Jazz announce SLC Summer League. Games on August 3, 4, and 6. Jazz will have 2 separate teams in the competition, and the Grizzlies and Spurs will have one each. Round robin format… we’ll see Jazz vs. Jazz! Games at Vivint Arena. 3-day passes are $18.

Anthony Mathis will join the San Antonio Spurs in the 2021 NBA Summer League. Played with the G League team earlier this year. He’s getting extra workouts in Albuquerque, says the elevation really helps. Working on a lot of pick and roll and getting his body stronger.

It gets messy with S/L. Guys float in and out sometimes, being signed by other organizations in the middle of the league. We literally pulled JSims off of a bus on the way to the now defunct Orlando summer league daily games. You basically find out the roster by checking the daily box score.

My initial reaction was:


No. That’s never happened with someone who is still not in the regular rotation and he hasn’t yet “made” it in. They are more likely to have one guy there, see him dominate, and pull him after just 2 games or something. I could see this with Vassell for example.

Playing international ball is no excuse either. Even Bertans did summer league and he was an international player veteran.

The only thing that makes sense is an injury, he’s maybe still rehabbing.

Even though we have seen him at the gym shooting and that excuse doesn’t convince me, if the team said it, ok.

But then, I remembered something that maybe Chinook can clarify. Spurs can compel a player to summer league and the gleague only in his first couple of years of his rookie contract. After that, any third year participation is voluntary and I have to tell you that gives me a very bad feeling about him because Kyle Anderson became a veteran of summer league going there 3 years. It became a meme how he was such a SL vet specially after being sent there his third season after winning that championship the summer before. He could have just refused but he acknowledged he had things to work on and agreed to go voluntarily after the team asked him.

Anyways, Samanic refusing to go when he still is not part of the regular rotation, has things to work on, could use the reps, could be better prepared for the season and help the team, gives me very bad vibes about him.

Unless it’s the gangrene on the hand I have a very bad feeling about him now. He’s not obligated to go but he should and he needs reps, practice, and be ready to earn a rotation spot. Is this how he’s going about it?

I hope the media asks the team what is up with him. It’s unfortunate for the team if he misses this opportunity.

I don't believe summer-league participation is every mandatory. Unlike the d-league, the SL requires a separate contract, and players get paid for it independently of any compensation for that season. You're correct that d-league assignments don't have to be agreed to for skill if the player has fewer than three years of tenure in the league.

Hell, why not? If he can get open and hit 3s at a consistent rate.....we may find a situational scorer, which is always valuable.

I think it would help. Bc of COVID he missed his own summer league last year where he would have been featured. His Gleague was shortened, he barely played in the regular season, which was also odd, and his rookie season was shortened bc of COVID. I think there are things offensively like decision making and confidence building that a player just won’t learn doing drills in a gym.

Even if the competition is not the best it’s organized team basketball in a competitive setting and there will be some legit NBA players in every team. I definitely think it helps non established players gain confidence and develop.

it’s probably not injury. Could be a ramp up thing, maybe. What’s more likely is watching his gleague performance last season the org knows Luka would just be stomping on children and taking touches away from the players who need the run and usage to get their feet wet against nba caliber athletes and talent.

Grew up in the same town as him and know him personally, wild. Haven't talked to him in a couple years because I moved out of state but I used to play basketball with him all the time at the YMCA when I was about 16 and he was only about 12 years old and he would always be playing with us older kids, kid was always lights out but he was short and chubby at that age but he would still make us older kids work haha. I saw him post about on Facebook about him playing for the SL team a couple days ago but I didn't know if it was legit, crazy stuff. This was him about two weeks ago.

IF Renfro has worked on his shot, then he’s got a chance to be a 4/5. We’ll see if his offense has improved since we last saw him. His defense is exceptional.

We'll see. All season long last year Devin was used mostly as a SG. Watched nearly every game last year and he was rarely assigned to guys like Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, and other big wings. I think he excels checking 1's and 2's because of his anticipation skills. Primo-- I think I've said my case a few times already. People are pointing to his combine height, and I think they'll end up being surprised. Obviously, I could be wrong.

Seems like every single article about him, especially post combine, insists on labeling him 6-6. And posters do it here too.

Interesting player so he was drafted in 2016 he was a top 5 high school player and people wondered back then who was better him or Ben Simmons. But went to college and was not a good defensive/rebounder at all and his stock and playing time tanked at Kentucky

He seems to be one of those players who is like the Deer comparison as far as run fast and jump high but not basketball wise. Hopefully he has worked on his core strength and can play more physical cause he was real skinny.

We've talked about nate's handling of primo this year and pettway was convinced that coach nate put him in a limited role so as to try and keep him under the radar and increase the likelihood he would come back for a second season. So nate had an agenda but he still went pro.

I'm going to hold judgement on Primo since its his first game but he is looking far from a 12th pick at the moment that's for sure. Hopefully he can pick it up more once he starts to get more comfortable.

Primo looks good and fluid on the offensive end. Making some good reads and passes, demonstrating some shot creation ability, but his handles and first step remain limited. Wieskamp is non existent on the offensive end but I’ve been encouraged by his effort on the boards and the defensive end. Moving his feet better than last game.

Of course, you can't ask for AMAZING from a child on his first game... I mean, Kobe underwhelmed his rook season from Laker fan expectations after trading for him.

Perspective is paramount, but there is plenty of good to see from Primo's game already.

Agree. The handle, to me, looks fine. I attribute it to more to playing against bigger and faster competition than what he experienced in college. Guys can close the gaps quickly so half spins and the like have to be executed quicker as a result.

I’m encouraged. Love that there’s licence to take 3s off the dribble, playmake off the p’nr. Some really good signs here.

I'll back off saying he's a 2/3. "Sadly" a combo (who can also guard 3's). A very good one at that. I'd like to see him with another PG, and take on the secondary playmaking role. He'll get spot up opportunities and raise his scoring even more.
