Tesla sales dropped 1.1% in 2024, its first annual decline in a dozen years

Tesla posted its first annual sales drop in more than a dozen years Thursday, sinking a stock that has soared since Donald Trump’s victory on optimism Elon Musk’s close relationship to the president-elect will help the company.

Tesla’s global vehicle sales rose 2.3% in the final quarter thanks to 0% financing, free charging and low-priced leases. But that was not enough for billionaire Musk’s most valuable holding to overcome a sluggish start to 2024.

The Austin, Texas, company sold 495,570 vehicles from October through December, boosting deliveries to 1.79 million for the full year. That was 1.1% below 2023 sales of 1.81 million as overall demand for electric vehicles in the U.S. and elsewhere slowed.

The year-over-year global sales drop is Tesla’s first since 2011, according to figures from analytics firm Global Data. The company sold 1,306 vehicles in 2010, but that dropped slightly to 1,129 the following year.

The fourth-quarter boost came with a cost. Analysts polled by FactSet expected Tesla’s average sales price to fall to just over $41,000 in the quarter, the lowest in at least four years.

putting a defense contractor and public subsidy hog like Elon in charge of cutting spending isn't credible, it's corrupt

People who, in good faith, want to see government get more efficient, may ask, "But what if we really do want to improve government efficiency and reduce spending?" That's great! Lots of us who care about this stuff would love to see those goals achieved. It's worth asking yourself a few questions if you care about those issues:

Today, 47% of discretionary spending (https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/2024-03/59729-Discretionary-Spending.pdf) each year by the federal government is on defense, but virtually nothing has been said about cutting defense spending. (It's almost half of the costs they could cut!) Why would they instead be talking about cutting veteran's benefits, which are a tiny fraction of that cost? It's almost like... they're not trying to cut spending to defense contractors.
Would anyone who sincerely cared about government efficiency begin without talking to anyone who's been working on those problems in the past? Are they likely to make progress if they haven't learned from any of the mistakes made in the decades of earlier attempts?
Is it likely that any organization is going to become more efficient if its employees are being targeted with threats of violence from strangers? If so, do you think you would be more productive at work if hundreds of strangers were talking about how you should be killed, and would you be comfortable if your name were shared in the group chats of the guys who carried out those New Year's Day attacks?
Would anyone let any other defense contractor or government vendor run a "department" that was trying to reduce government spending? What if the CEO of Boeing said they were going to cut government spending? A big pharma CEO said he was going to increase government efficiency? Maybe the head of an investment bank was going to come in and reduce spending at the Commerce department? That sound credible to you? What makes these particular corporate executives even remotely credible to do this job? How is it not a massive conflict of interest to put people who sell hundreds of millions of dollars of products directly to the government in charge of reducing government spending?
If procurement processes are the way in which all the money in the government is spent, and they're too complicated (which they definitely are!) how can you reduce government spending without engaging with the hundreds of advocates and activists who've been fighting to improve things there? Instead of targeting innocent government workers for violence, why not lift up and amplify the good work of folks in the Government Accountability Office, the independent efforts at procement reform, or just ordinary citizens fighting for simpler processes or to reduce paperwork and complexity?

The bad-faith style of engagement, the endangering of workers who have .00005% the wealth of the richest man on earth, the ignoring of obvious waste in defense spending... all of these signs show us that DOGE isn't about what it pretends to be. Instead, we need to look no further than the simple corrupt backroom deals of strong men dictators around the world to see how the friends of leaders get sweetheart deals to sell their stuff at inflated prices (and, usually, inferior quality) while everyone else foots the bill.

It used to be the kind of thing that Americans would point at sadly as an example of how other countries were struggling. Now we're failing to see the same playbook being used against us.
Understanding DOGE as Procurement Capture - Anil Dash (https://www.anildash.com/2025/01/04/DOGE-procurement-capture/)

Winehole23
01-03-2025, 10:53 AM
Now, imagine you were a tycoon who is also a defense contractor that is trying to sell hundreds of billions of dollars of military equipment to the government, and you know that the procurement process requires them to go with the lowest bidder. But, since you're a dude with hundreds of billions of dollars, it doesn't seem fair that the system isn't even more rigged in your favor. How would you "fix" this system? Well, you'd have to capture procurement, so that it was rigged to only buy stuff from you and your friends, at whatever price you guys want. And if it could screw your competitors (https://fortune.com/2024/11/29/vivek-ramaswamy-elon-musk-doge-tesla-rivian-biden-federal-government-loan-trump/) along the way, and punish them for not kissing your ass? That would be a bonus.

Enter DOGE.

former privacy concern trolls and free speech concern trolls now bend the knee to the First Buddy

“I have to thank Elon Musk, specifically,” said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill to reporters. “He gave us quite a bit of additional information.“

Some privacy experts were less enthusiastic.

“It reveals the kind of sweeping surveillance going on,” said David Choffnes, executive director of the Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute at Northeastern University in Boston. “When something bad happens, it’s helpful, but it’s a double edged sword. Companies that collect this data can abuse it.”

General Motors, for instance, was sued in August by the Texas attorney general for allegedly selling data from 1.8 million drivers to insurance companies without their consent.

Cars equipped with cameras to enable self-driving features have added a new security risk. Tesla itself came under fire after Reuters reported how employees from 2019 through 2022 shared drivers’ sensitive videos and recordings with each other, including videos of road rage incidents and, in one case, nudity.
Tesla data helped police in Las Vegas. It highlights privacy concerns | AP News (https://apnews.com/article/tesla-las-vegas-explosion-cybertruck-elon-musk-789dc864a0c138fd7c36ca8c94b0fbfd)

Zuck's toadyism goes way back

Chinese President Xi Jinping (https://nypost.com/tag/Xi-Jinping/) was in no mood to grant favors at his White House state dinner — not even for Mark Zuckerberg (https://pagesix.com/tag/mark-zuckerberg/)’s unborn baby.

Among the many tech and media titans who were invited, a few who came to kiss Xi’s ring at the Sept. 25 dinner hosted by President Obama (https://pagesix.com/tag/barack-obama/) and First Lady Michelle (https://pagesix.com/tag/michelle-obama/) also asked for something in return.

Zuckerberg spoke to Xi in Mandarin and asked if he would do him and wife Priscilla the honor of giving the baby she is expecting an honorary Chinese name.

Xi’s terse reply: “No.” While a spokesperson for Zuckerberg told us, “This was not correct,” a second source insisted that Xi did decline to nominate a name for the Facebook founder’s unborn baby girl and politely added that it would be “too much responsibility.”

I did not know that Trump and his incoming FCC chief threatened Zuck, but i'm not surprised that they did, nor that Zuck rolled over

Former President Donald Trump writes in a new book set to be published next week that Mark Zuckerberg plotted against him during the 2020 election and said the Meta chief executive would “spend the rest of his life in prison” if he did it again.

“He told me there was nobody like Trump on Facebook. But at the same time, and for whatever reason, steered it against me,” Trump continues. “We are watching him closely, and if he does anything illegal this time he will spend the rest of his life in prison — as will others who cheat in the 2024 Presidential Election.”

Trump has made similar remarks about Zuckerberg before. Trump wrote in a July post on Truth Social that if elected he would pursue “ELECTION FRAUDSTERS at levels never seen before, and they will be sent to prison for long periods of time. We already know who you are. DON’T DO IT! ZUCKERBUCKS, be careful!”

Yeah he def was and is as of today and 2015. Well, maybe not Drudge himself because he sold the site off within that era. Either way, the Drudge Report is most def an arm of the "left".

Musk’s maternal grandfather, Joshua Haldeman, moved from Canada to South Africa in 1950 because he liked the newly elected apartheid government.

In the 1930s, Haldeman was the Canadian leader of a fringe political movement originating in the US, Technocracy Incorporated, that advocated abolishing democracy in favor of government by elite technicians but which took on overtones of fascism with its uniforms and salutes.

The Canadian government banned Technocracy Incorporated during the second world war as a threat to the country’s security in part for its opposition to fighting Hitler. Haldeman was charged with publishing documents opposing the war and sent to prison for two months.

After the war, Haldeman led a separate political party that among other things promoted the antisemitic forgery the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. When that went nowhere, he moved to South Africa because he said he liked the core National party philosophy of Christian nationalism that Vorster likened to Nazism.

Elon Musk Lackeys Have Taken Over the Office of Personnel Management | WIRED (https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-lackeys-office-personnel-management-opm-neuralink-x-boring-stalin/)

Winehole23

This is a paywalled article (https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-lackeys-office-personnel-management-opm-neuralink-x-boring-stalin/) at Wired. But it makes a pretty good case that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is now basically being run at its highest levels by people installed by and working with Elon Musk. In other words, “DOGE” seems to be calling the shots at OPM, even though it’s run by people who aren’t even federal employees. Most of these people appear to come from Musk’s various companies. Wired declined to publish the names of two of the people because of their age. One graduated from high school last summer.

Some of this is already known. The nominee to run the agency, Scott Kupor, is a partner at the Andreessen/Horowitz VC firm. They’re aligned with Musk politically. So that’s consistent with the rest of the story. But it seems the upper echelons of the agency has already been stocked with a mix of Musk’s people and Republican operatives, notwithstanding the fact that this is a federal agency which is usually made up almost entirely of career staff.

letting xAI, Palantir, the Boring Company, and Neuralink run OPM is wild

This afternoon OPM sent out an email to civilian government employees offering them “buy outs” if they resigned from their jobs in the next 10 days (by February 6th). This has been reported (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/01/28/trump-emails-workforce/) by the Post and I’ve also received copies of the email directly sent to me by TPM Readers. (If you’re a federal employee: send me all the information/documents you have. We can also arrange to communicate through an encrypted channel.) The legal basis of these “buy outs” is dubious at best – though we need to learn more about that. It also seems highly questionable under what authorization the administration is dramatically trimming the entire federal workforce without any congressional authority. That said, the spending freeze already takes the administration fairly brazenly outside of its constitutional authority. But the whole picture comes into clearly view if this is being run and planned by people reporting to Elon Musk. This is essentially what he did when he took over Twitter.

This “buy out” email comes after an episode last week in which OPM was setting up a new distribution list that went over the org charts of individual government agencies and went directly to individual federal government employees. The “buy out” email and presumably other actions yet to come seem clearly to be what that was for.

Tesla slides in German EV ranking as new registrations plummet 41 percent

U.S. carmaker Tesla, which is headed by highly controversial CEO Elon Musk, registered the biggest slump of new registrations among all electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers in Germany last year. Registrations of new Teslas dropped 41 percent to less than 38,000 vehicles, data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) showed, reported news agency dpa.

With a share of nearly 10 percent of all EV registrations, Tesla dropped to third place in Germany in 2024, after already ceding its pole position in 2022. Total EV registrations fell 27 percent to 381,000, a development that was partly driven by the end of e-car purchase premiums in late 2023.

However, some carmakers bucked the downward trend: Germany’s BMW overtook Telsa by registering just over 40,000 cars and claiming a market share of over 11 percent. Swedish brand Volvo also greatly increased its registrations, although at a lower total volume of only about 14,000 registrations. Germany’s largest car company VW defended its leading position in the country’s EV market with roughly 62,000 registrations and a market share of over 16 percent. Mercedes reached the fourth rank in registrations with 34,000 vehicles.

Co-president Musk making the rounds at the GSA, which among other things is the US's real-estate manager

[Mr. Musk visited the agency’s headquarters in Washington on Thursday afternoon, according to three people briefed on his activities who insisted on anonymity, and met with the acting administrator of the agency, Stephen Ehikian. Mr. Musk, joined by one of his young children, arrived shortly after noon and spent a few hours at the agency, with several black S.U.V.s parked out front.

The so-called Department of Government Efficiency, President Trump’s new cost-cutting group led by Mr. Musk, has so far focused on terminating leases of what it has called “mostly empty” federal offices, which are managed by the General Services Administration. On Monday, the group said the agency had already terminated three leases.

“These are the first steps to right size the Federal real estate portfolio of more than 7,500 leases,” the group wrote in a post (https://x.com/DOGE/status/1884015256957296917) on X, Mr. Musk’s social media platform.

Want to know how that is going? Three Meta employees who I’ve never spoken to before just cold messaged/emailed me offering me to be sources.

as if from the standpoint of an uninvolved third country

What started Thursday as a political purge of the internal security services accelerated Friday into a full-blown coup, as elite technical units aligned with media oligarch Elon Musk moved to seize key systems at the national treasury (https://wapo.st/40Ve0k9?utm_source=www.doomsdayscenario.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=musk-s-junta-establishes-him-as-head-of-government), block outside access to federal personnel records (https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-lackeys-general-services-administration/?utm_source=www.doomsdayscenario.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=musk-s-junta-establishes-him-as-head-of-government), and take offline governmental communication networks (https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/federal-websites-temporarily-go-dark-order-comply-trump-dei-directive-rcna190244?utm_source=www.doomsdayscenario.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=musk-s-junta-establishes-him-as-head-of-government).

With rapidity that has stunned even longtime political observers, forces loyal to Musk’s junta have established him as the all-but undisputed unelected head of government in just a matter of days, unwinding the longtime democracy’s constitutional system and its proud nearly 250-year-old tradition of the rule of law. Having secured themselves in key ministries and in a building adjacent to the presidential office complex, Musk’s forces have begun issuing directives to civil service workers and forcing the resignation of officials deemed insufficiently loyal, like the head of the country’s aviation authority (https://www.theverge.com/news/603113/faa-chief-musk-dc-plane-crash-crisis?utm_source=www.doomsdayscenario.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=musk-s-junta-establishes-him-as-head-of-government).

Over the last two weeks, loyalist presidential factions and Musk-backed teams have launched sweeping, illegal Stalin-esque purges of the national police forces and prosecutors (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fbi-agents-on-jan-6-capitol-riot-trump-investigations-to-be-fired-sources-say/?utm_source=www.doomsdayscenario.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=musk-s-junta-establishes-him-as-head-of-government), as well as offices known as inspectors-general (https://www.reuters.com/world/us/usda-inspector-general-escorted-out-her-office-after-defying-white-house-2025-01-29/?utm_source=www.doomsdayscenario.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=musk-s-junta-establishes-him-as-head-of-government), who are typically responsible for investigating government corruption. While official numbers of the unprecedented ousters were kept secret, rumors swirled in the capital that the scores of career officials affected by the initial purges could rise into the thousands (https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/31/politics/fbi-agents-who-investigated-january-6-fired/index.html?utm_source=www.doomsdayscenario.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=musk-s-junta-establishes-him-as-head-of-government) as political commissars continued to assess the backgrounds of members of the police forces.

The country’s other business oligarchs have watched Musk’s unexpected and rapid rise to power with trepidation, and leading media and technology companies who compete with Musk’s extensive business empire—like Meta, Amazon, Disney, Paramount, Apple, and OpenAI—have quickly lined up to negotiate and pay bribes to the president that would allow their companies to operate unimpeded; initial payment terms ranged from million-dollar gifts to the presidential inauguration to $15 million (https://apnews.com/article/abc-trump-lawsuit-defamation-stephanopoulos-04aea8663310af39ae2a85f4c1a56d68?utm_source=www.do omsdayscenario.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=musk-s-junta-establishes-him-as-head-of-government) and $25 million (https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/meta-agrees-pay-25-million-settle-trump-lawsuit-rcna189918?utm_source=www.doomsdayscenario.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=musk-s-junta-establishes-him-as-head-of-government) payments, made by Disney and Meta, to fund the construction of a presidential shrine. The highest known payment was $40 million from Amazon (https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/amazon-paying-license-melania-trump-documentary-1235227761/?utm_source=www.doomsdayscenario.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=musk-s-junta-establishes-him-as-head-of-government), which was structured as a gift to the president’s wife in exchange for the media company having the opportunity to film a hagiographic biopic.

It was unclear, exactly, what deal terms any of those bribes and payments unlocked and when subsequent tribute payments would be expected, although on Saturday Trump moved to fire and neuter government watchdogs (https://www.threads.net/@yasharali/post/DFiONlaubXT?utm_source=www.doomsdayscenario.co&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=musk-s-junta-establishes-him-as-head-of-government) that had long bedeviled the country’s financial elite.

Run by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, the sensitive systems control the flow of more than $6 trillion annually to households, businesses and more nationwide. Tens, if not hundreds, of millions of people across the country rely on the systems, which are responsible for distributing Social Security and Medicare benefits, salaries for federal personnel, payments to government contractors and grant recipients and tax refunds, among tens of thousands of other functions…. ‘This is a mechanical job — they pay Social Security benefits, they pay vendors, whatever. It’s not one where there’s a role for nonmechanical things, at least from the career standpoint. Your whole job is to pay the bills as they’re due,’ [Mark Mazur, who served in senior treasury roles during the Obama and Biden administrations] said. ‘It’s never been used in a way to execute a partisan agenda. … You have to really put bad intentions in place for that to be the case.'”

Elon Musk wants X to be the center of your financial world, handling anything in your life that deals with money. He expects those features to launch by the end of 2024, he told X employees during an all-hands call on Thursday (https://www.theverge.com/e/23698094), saying that people will be surprised with “just how powerful it is.”

“When I say payments, I actually mean someone’s entire financial life,” Musk said, according to audio of the meeting obtained by The Verge. “If it involves money. It’ll be on our platform. Money or securities or whatever. So, it’s not just like send $20 to my friend. I’m talking about, like, you won’t need a bank account.”

Ford 'ripping up' Ontario's $100M contract with Elon Musk's Starlink in wake of U.S. tariffs

Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford is "ripping up" Ontario's nearly $100 million contract with Elon Musk's Starlink in the wake of U.S. tariffs on virtually all Canadian goods, he said in a statement Monday.

The contract, signed in November, was meant to provide high-speed internet access through Starlink's satellite service to 15,000 eligible homes and businesses in rural, remote and northern communities by June of this year.

"Ontario won't do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy," Ford said in the statement.

Ford said Ontario will ban American companies from provincial contracts until U.S. tariffs are removed.

"U.S.-based businesses will now lose out on tens of billions of dollars in new revenues. They only have President Trump to blame," he said.

Tesla (TSLA) sales are dropping like a rock in Europe, but it’s not just because of Elon Musk

Tesla sales are dropping like a rock in Europe based on early sales numbers coming for January 2025. Many are linking this to dissatisfaction with CEO Elon Musk’s meddling in European politics.

While there’s undoubtedly some of that going on, it’s not the only factor.

Several European countries release car sale numbers on a monthly basis.

When we compare Tesla’s performance to the same period last year, the American automaker is down in every single market, and it has delivered about half as many vehicles as last year:

Country Jan-25 Jan-24 % YoY
UK 1,293 1,581 -18.2%
France 1,141 3,118 -63.4%
Netherlands 926 1,610 -42.5%
Norway 663 1,109 -40.2%
Spain 269 1,094 -75.4%
Sweden 394 730 -46.0%
Denmark 451 763 -40.9%
Portugal 380 551 -31.0%
Total 5,517 10,556 -47.7%

Elon Musk’s X faces criminal probe in France over algorithm manipulation concerns

French prosecutors on have opened an investigation into Elon Musk’s X over allegations that it distorted its algorithms to manipulate discourse taking place on the social media platform.

The Paris public prosecutor’s office said it received a report from a French lawmaker on Jan. 12 criticizing X over “biased algorithms” that were “likely to have distorted the operation of an automated data processing system.”

Magistrates and specialized assistants of the office’s cybercrime section have been tasked with analyzing the report and carrying out initial technical checks on the platform, the prosecutor’s office told CNBC Friday, in emailed comments.

CNBC has contacted X for comment.

X, which was formerly known as Twitter, has been dogged by concerns surrounding shortcomings on content moderation since Musk bought the platform in 2022 for $44 billion.

To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell

In October 2024 I decided to buy a Tesla Model 3. When I picked up the car, many of its features did not work (cameras, GPS navigation system, autopilot, software updates, etc.). It turned out to be a major issue with Tesla’s brand-new on-board computer. This is a common failure in Tesla Model 3 cars manufactured in the last quarter of 2024. The issue has affected thousands of Tesla customers. Two weeks later, the car began to lose 8% battery daily. Several drivers experiencing the same failure have also reported problems with the braking (ABS) and suspension (EPS) systems.

Tesla acknowledges all faults in the vehicle (except for battery losses, a fact on which it has not yet formally commented). The company refuses to accept a return of the vehicle without penalty, even though the problems were reported immediately. The only solution they offer is to make me wait 3 months for a miraculous replacement part. Ignored and without any type of compensation, I live attached to a car that needs a full recharge every 12 days to not die. For my own safety, and that of other drivers, I have stopped driving the vehicle.

tabloidy, but fun

Tesla stock sinks by 26% in wake of Elon Musk’s ‘Nazi’ salute at Trump rally

Tesla’s stock has fallen more than 26 percent since Elon Musk became a central figure in President Donald Trump’s administration and kicked off his leadership with a now-infamous salute at Trump’s celebratory inaugural rally.

While addressing a crowd of Trump’s supporters on Inauguration Day, Musk brought his hand across his chest and then launched it into the air with his hand and wrist straight – earning intense scrutiny for what some believe was a “Nazi salute” or “Roman salute.”

While Musk’s electric vehicle company, Tesla, had enjoyed a large uptick in stock value due to his proximity to the Trump campaign, since the day after he made the gesture, Tesla’s stock has steadily dropped from $424.07 to $290.80 as of Wednesday.

Carlos Slim orders to cancel his collaboration with Elon Musk’s Starlink

In a significant business development, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has decided to cancel his collaboration with Elon Musk’s Starlink. The decision comes after a series of tensions between the two magnates, culminating in Slim’s choice to invest in his own infrastructure rather than relying on Starlink’s satellite technology.

Slim’s company, América Móvil, announced plans to invest $22 billion over the next three years to enhance its telecommunications infrastructure. This move is seen as a strategic effort to strengthen its position in the market and reduce dependency on external partners like Starlink. The decision is expected to have a substantial financial impact on Musk’s company, which had anticipated a lucrative partnership in Latin America.

The fallout between Slim and Musk was further exacerbated by a controversial tweet from Musk, which implied connections between Slim and organized crime. This accusation, although unproven, added fuel to the already strained relationship between the two business tycoons.

A union takes on Tesla over its stock price

...

Weingarten noted that Tesla’s shares have fallen to $290, down 28 percent over the past month. It pointed to what it said were a number of signs that the company was facing even more headwinds, including:

Falling quarterly earnings and profit margins, which the union said implied that Tesla was losing its pricing power

Tumbling sales in California, a major market, and in Europe

Greater competition in electric vehicle charging, a business Tesla has long dominated.

Biggest of all is the damage that Musk has done to Tesla’s brand, Weingarten argues. Customers considering buying an E.V. now view the entrepreneur negatively, citing data from the American EV Jobs Alliance, a bipartisan group.

The stakes are big. “If it were to decline to the price target of $135 that some analysts have projected, the resulting loss would be 1.2 percent of asset owners’ total S&P 500 indexed portfolio,” she writes.

Some Tesla investors have grown worried about whether Musk’s political work is distracting from Tesla and alienating potential buyers at home and abroad. Others are wondering how Musk may react to the effect on his own finances from Tesla’s falling valuation.

I'm sure that is coming. The other US manufacturers might also have production issues with tariffs, so i wouldn't put it past them to try and force them to merger with Tesla, when they get into trouble. This is how power consolidation went in Russia. Companies are small potatoes, when you can control entire industries in a large country like USA.

With a dying international law order, the multinational companies are dinosaurs waiting for extinction anyway.

Tesla electric car sales plunge again in Australia – Model 3 down more than 81 per cent

The plunge in Tesla electric vehicle sales has continued into February, according to the latest official data, with combined sales of the Model Y and Model 3 EVs plunging 71.9 per cent in the month of February, compared to the same month a year earlier.

The data from the Electric Vehicle Council shows that Tesla recorded just 1,592 EV sales in February, down from 5,665 for February last year. For the first two months of the year, sales have slumped 66 per cent to 2,331 from 6,772 in 2024.

Tesla supporters insist the sales plunge – which is also intense in European countries – is only the result of inventory levels and customers waiting for refreshed Model Y, and some increased competition.

But most analysts and observers also point to the influence that CEO Elon Musk is having on the market because of his partnership with US president Donald Trump and his open support for far right political causes.

OSHA issued three $16,550 “serious” violations against Tesla, all at the maximum level for a serious violation.

One violation was for lack of personal protective equipment, stating that an “employee was working in close proximity to energized parts without wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.”

A second violation stated that “Employee(s) were permitted to work in proximity to electric power circuits that were not protected against electric shock by de-energizing and grounding the circuits or effectively guarding the circuits by insulation or other means. The “employee was performing an inspection on an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) cabinet without it being de-energized.” OSHA has a standard, commonly known as the lockout-tagout standard (https://www.osha.gov/control-hazardous-energy) that requires hazardous equipment to be “de-energized” or “locked out” before any maintenance is conducted.

The final item was a violation of an electrical standard, stating that “quality control employees were exposed to electrical hazards while performing tests and inspections on newly installed electrical equipment without prior hazard analysis, warning signs, and communication of safe work procedures.”

Before work began the employer did not ascertain by inquiry or direct observation, or by instruments, whether any part of an energized electric power circuit, exposed or concealed, was so located that the performance of the work could bring a person, tool, or machine into physical or electrical contact with the energized electric power circuit. The employer did not post and maintain proper warning signs where such a circuit existed. The employer did not advise employees of the location of such lines, the hazards involved, and the protective measures to be taken.

US plans to close European consulates and cut state department workforce

The US state department is preparing to shut down a number of consulates that are mainly in western Europe in the coming months and looking to reduce its workforce globally, multiple US officials said on Thursday.

The state department is also looking into potentially merging a number of its expert bureaus at its headquarters in Washington that are working in areas such as human rights, refugees, global criminal justice, women’s issues and efforts to counter human trafficking, the officials said.

Reuters reported last month that US missions around the world had been asked to look into reducing US and locally employed staff by at least 10% as Donald Trump and his billionaire aide Elon Musk have unleashed an unprecedented cost-cutting effort across the US federal workforce.

The Republican president wants to ensure his bureaucracy is fully aligned with his “America first” agenda. Last month he issued an executive order to revamp the US foreign service to ensure “faithful and effective” implementation of his foreign policy agenda.

Multiple Teslas Set On Fire in Germany

...
The first car fire was reported at 1.40 a.m. local time, with the subsequent car fires being reported throughout the night.

German police said that no one was injured in the fires, but that all four vehicles were left entirely unusable. Five other vehicles near the fires were also slightly damaged.

Berlin police said that a "political motive" could not be ruled out, and that the State Security Division of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office had taken over the investigation. The unit investigates threats to the state, including terrorism, extremism, and organized crime.

Germany has seen a number of anti-Musk protests in the wake of his endorsement of the far-right AfD party ahead of the country's general election in February, many of them targeting Tesla factories.

An image of Musk making a controversial salute following Trump's inauguration was projected onto Tesla's Gigafactory in Berlin in January. The display featured Musk's gesture alongside the words "Heil Tesla."

Tesla Cybertruck deliveries are on hold as trims are flying off the ‘bulletproof’ truck

According to Tesla delivery agents, Cybertruck deliveries are on hold. There’s a containment hold as many owners are reporting trims flying off the supposedly ‘bulletproof’ electric truck.

Many Tesla Cybertruck buyers are taking to forums and social media to report that their deliveries are being pushed.

There are 8 Cybertrucks buyers waiting for deliveries who reported the delay on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum and many more on X and Facebook.

Most are being told by Tesla delivery specialists that there’s a “containment hold” on all Cybertruc deliveries.

A containment hold generally occurs when an automaker finds something wrong with newly produced vehicles and wants to hold deliveries to fix the issue so that it can avoid recalling vehicles in customers’ hands.

Arson suspected as Tesla vehicles burn at Las Vegas, Kansas City facilities

Police are investigating a possible arson case at a Tesla dealership in Kansas City, Missouri after two Tesla Cybertrucks burned on Monday night.

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are working together with the Kansas City Police Department to investigate the fires.

Police said an officer spotted a Cybertruck on fire at the dealership shortly before midnight on March 17. The officer tried to use a fire extinguisher before having to call the Kansas City Fire Department to assist as the fire spread to a second Cybertruck in the parking lot.

...

A similar incident took place in Las Vegas at the Tesla Collision Center around 2:45 a.m. local time on March 18.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren said officials received multiple calls on Tuesday night, including from a person who said they heard gunshots. Authorities said a suspect armed with a gun and Molotov cocktails launched a “targeted attack” on the Tesla location, firing shots and torching multiple vehicles.

“This was a targeted attack against a Tesla facility, ” Koren told reporters during a press conference. “We do believe that it is isolated at this time. We do not believe there is further threat to the general public.”

Tesla Insurance Rates Set To Spike As Cars Become Vandalism Targets

...

Tesla drivers aren't going to be happy if their insurance rates go up. It's the most expensive premium car brand to insure according to CarEdge, falling just behind Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, Bentley, McLaren, Maserati, and Aston Martin.

...

"Tesla Model 3, Model Y, and Model X are the most expensive EV to insure as of February 2025," he confirmed. The cost of full-insurance for a Tesla Model 3, according to Insurify, increased 30 percent last year, to $4,362 annually.

"This is 25 percent higher in cost than the comparable Mercedes Benz A-Class. The annual average cost of full-coverage auto insurance for the Tesla Cybertruck reached $3,813 in 2025," Brannon added.

Tesla board members, executive sell off over $100 million of stock in recent weeks

...
Elon Musk's brother, Kimbal Musk, who also sits on the board, unloaded 75,000 shares worth approximately $27 million last month, according to a filing.

The chairman of the board, Robyn Denholm, has offloaded more than $75 million dollars worth of shares in two transactions in the past five weeks, federal filings show. The selloffs made by Denholm came as part of a predetermined sales plan.

A number of board members and executives made similar moves in November and December. But the recent sales come at a tumultuous time for Tesla, with the stock falling nearly 50% from a peak in mid-December. The company's shares have suffered most of those losses since President Donald Trump took office and Musk began his controversial governmental cost-cutting efforts as the head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency.
