Tears and disappointment flowed Monday after newly sworn-in President Donald Trump cut off a mobile app that allowed migrants to apply to enter the U.S. legally as asylum-seekers. All pending appointments made with the app have been canceled, too.
The CBP One app was set up under the Biden administration as a way to curb people crossing the southwest border illegally to request asylum. Once it went into effect, it was the only way for people to get an appointment to request asylum....."

Pope Francis has criticized US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to deport immigrants as a “disgrace.”
The pontiff, speaking during an Italian television interview, was asked about the incoming Trump administration’s plans to expel undocumented immigrants through an aggressive slate of immigration executive orders by the incoming president, who will be inaugurated Monday.
“If it is true, it will be a disgrace, because it makes the poor wretches who have nothing to pay the unpaid bill. It won’t do. This is not the way to solve things,” Francis said during the Sunday interview...."

Regulatory freeze: The freeze will prevent bureaucrats from issuing any more regulations until the Trump officials take full control of the government.
Hiring freeze: There will be a freeze on federal hiring, except the military and a number of other categories, until Trump officials are in full control.
Full-time return to work: Federal workers will be required to return to full-time in-person work immediately.
Cost of living: A directive to every federal agency and department to address the cost of living crisis.
Withdrawal from Paris Climate Agreement: This will formalize the US pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement again. Trump has done this in his first term, but Biden had joined the agreement again. Trump also signed a letter to the United Nations, explaining the withdrawal.
Freedom of speech: Federal government was directed to restore freedom of speech and preventing government censorship of free speech. The First Amendment already guarantees free speech in the US.
Ending weaponization of government: Trump’s directive to the federal government is meant to end weaponization of government against the political adversaries of the previous administration

swamp creatures doing what swamp creatures do
But the rescinded order that caught my eye was Executive Order 14006 (https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2021/01/29/2021-02070/reforming-our-incarceration-system-to-eliminate-the-use-of-privately-operated-criminal-detention), which eliminated the use of privately operated criminal detention facilities. Keep in mind that Trump billed this effort primarily as rooting out “diversity, equity, and inclusion” from the government. Bringing back privately operated detention doesn’t serve that purpose at all. It simply enriches the private prison duopoly, GEO Group and CoreCivic. Both company’s (https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/CXW/) stocks (https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/GEO/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9kdWNrZHVja2dvLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAABdo4r3jpwBZQxqQv8DbZvRhin3D BOew2Mw195GUAZdNsEd6sU5Uaem_vbceihX6QecSzjnUvkxxF3 RjnVys_kiYUoblPBGbGMcGC3YR6bfbV8JyGD92oRUy7XMw0k9A w7EHb7ru_grhU5QBvVEwDKsNxtI8TO1NMxSV0CmUioSV) have soared since the election, and now, both stand to gain billions in federal contracts, mostly to detain undocumented immigrants. It’s a big win for GEO Group’s former lobbyist, attorney general nominee Pam Bondi.https://prospect.org/politics/2025-01-21-executive-action-reaction-day-1/

the idea that zero women and minorities are qualified for jobs absent state and federal civil rights protections is profoundly bigoted
and let's be honest here, what Republicans want to do away with isn't DEI, that's just a code word for civil rights for nonwhites.
there's a good reason women and minorities got "special civil rights" back in the 1960s. they got special civil rights because society at large treated them like second class citizens, denying them access to voting, jobs housing and the ballot box -- and the constitution did not protect them, so Congress stepped in.
anti-woke activism is white backlash and paternalistic chauvinism, pure and simple

Trump's efforts to root DEI out of government and business culture will root out 1960s civil rights and voting rights laws too. I'm out of time though 4 years from now. Vance won't stand fast (chances at 70/30 he won't) in the ranks even if he follows the old man into the WH.
Watching those 2 at the rally on Monday afternoon does not assure me. He is not vested, not fully, not even close. No.
He'll/Vance most likely return pretty darn close to the fore of what we just got rid of. God sent us Trump, but, with the knowledge of the firm requisite 8 year time limit.

We'll know in 15 to 45 days. 15 day deadline for the DNI (Hopefully Tulsi Gabbard by that time) to present a plan for release of the JFK files and 45 days for the DNI to present a plan for the release of files related to RFK and MLK.
Relevant language from the EXECUTIVE ORDER (https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/declassification-of-records-concerning-the-assassinations-of-president-john-f-kenned/):
I [President Trump] previously accepted proposed redactions from executive departments and agencies (agencies) in 2017 and 2018, but ordered the continued re-evaluation of those remaining redactions. See Temporary Certification for Certain Records Related to the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy, 82 Fed. Reg. 50,307–08 (Oct. 31, 2017); Certification for Certain Records Related to the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy, 83 Fed. Reg. 19, 157–58 (Apr. 26, 2018). In the Presidential Memorandum of April 26, 2018, I also ordered agencies to re-review each of those redactions over the next 3 years and disclose information that no longer warrants continued withholding under the standard set forth in section 5(g)(2)(D) of the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992.
Let me interject here; it was Mike Pompeo who proposed the redactions. Anyone hear what happened to Pompeo today?
Trump revokes protections for former Secretary of State Pompeo and top aide threatened by Iran (https://apnews.com/article/trump-pompeo-hook-iran-security-protections-987ca371756f48028ebd34ca7111f1c5)
It's like the fucking christening scene in the Godfather.
I have now determined that the continued redaction and withholding of information from records pertaining to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy is not consistent with the public interest and the release of these records is long overdue. And although no Act of Congress directs the release of information pertaining to the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I have determined that the release of all records in the Federal Government’s possession pertaining to each of those assassinations is also in the public interest.
Sec. 2. Declassification and Disclosure. (a) Within 15 days of the date of this order, the Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General shall, in coordination with the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and the Counsel to the President, present a plan to the President for the full and complete release of records relating to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
(b) Within 45 days of the date of this order, the Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General shall, in coordination with the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and the Counsel to the President, review records related to the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and present a plan to the President for the full and complete release of these records.

stopping everything the Biden administration was doing across the board is dumb
For all the hype and warnings about how TikTok is clearly a “national security threat” from China, the Trump administration has effectively kneecapped the investigation into one of the most serious cybersecurity breaches in US history — a genuine, proven threat to national security. In what Team Trump probably thinks is a move to “destroy the deep state,” they’ve actually disbanded the government review board tasked with getting to the bottom of this unprecedented hack of our phone system by China.
We’re still nowhere near understanding just how bad the Chinese hack of our phone system was. The incident that was only discovered last fall (https://www.techdirt.com/2024/10/16/wyden-calea-hack-proves-dangers-of-government-mandated-backdoors/) involved the Chinese hacking group Salt Typhoon, which used the US’s CALEA phone wiretapping system as a backdoor to gain incredible, unprecedented access to much of the US’s phone system “for months or longer.”
As details come out, the extent of the hackers’ access has become increasingly alarming. It is reasonable to call it the worst hack in US history (https://www.techdirt.com/2024/12/30/mindlessly-deregulating-u-s-telecom-contributed-to-the-worst-hack-in-u-s-history/).
Soon after it was discovered, Homeland Security tasked the Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB) to lead an investigation into the hack (https://federalnewsnetwork.com/federal-newscast/2024/10/dhs-cyber-security-safety-review-board-to-examine-salt-typhoon-attack/) to uncover what allowed it to happen and assess how bad it really was. The CSRB was established by Joe Biden to improve the government’s cybersecurity in the face of global cybersecurity attacks on our infrastructure and was made up of a mix of government and private sector cybersecurity experts.
And one of the first things Donald Trump did upon retaking the presidency was to dismantle the board, along with all other DHS Advisory Committees.

I'll bet you a half million bucks this doesn't happen.
He can't overturn the 22nd Amendment by executive order.
It's much clearer than even the 14th Amendment is. The 14th Amendment was purposed to give slaves and American Indians citizenship and equal rights and freedom. Anchor babies, not so much, but chalk that up to the authors knee jerking and not seeing far enough into the future. It's a toss up on what SCOTUS decides there.
However, the 22nd Amendment was clear as day as to what its specific purpose was, it was specifically created because your very own FDR was a four term emperor essentially in there with essentially no opposition, he was a dictator, any opposition was immediately crushed by Black Thursday and stock market crash under Hoover fear tactic telegrams and radio propaganda ads.
The 22nd Amendment is succinctly specific and cannot be overturned without 67 yay votes in the senate, 292 yay votes in the House, and 38 yay votes from state legislatures. This would require a lot of Democratic support for Trump and thus it will never happen.

Trump's government is politically vetted to the max.
DEI basically means, I see women and black people.
The memo (https://chcoc.gov/sites/default/files/OPM%20Memo%20Initial%20Guidance%20Regarding%20DEIA %20Executive%20Orders.pdf) on how to execute Trump’s order shutting down DEIA programs —which was issued by the Office of Personnel Management to all the heads of departments and agencies—illustrates the inherent discriminatory problems with these policies. One section of the memo, for instance, informs the agency heads that all employees of “DEIA offices” must be placed on administrative leave, immediately. But what defines a DEIA office? The memo doesn’t say. Instead, it says that some allegedly DEIA offices are “disguised” with “coded or imprecise language.”
What that means, effectively, is that anybody who is in a DEIA office or looks like they might be can immediately be placed on administrative leave without due process or any other legal determination. That is straight-up employment discrimination. The government itself is saying that it can’t say exactly who it’s going after, but it will know that person when it sees them. It creates two different classes of government employees: one group that the white supremacist government deems worthy, and another group that is deemed suspect, based on as little as an eye test.

It's also why he waited until his second term to implement some of his hardline issues. He's gonna be on a yacht somewhere in 2029 and playing golf no matter whether his approval rating is 80% or 30% nationwide at the end of 2028, so he doesn't care now.
Nah, it's because he still had fucks in his pocket. This time, President Trump is all out of fucks to give.
Wouldn't it be something if California turned red. The man walked into the devastated den of liberal, leftist, progressive Los Angeles and knocked the State (Newsome) and local (Bass) governments off high center. It's been a thing of beauty watching the Current President do, in a week, what Joe Biden wouldn't do in 4 years. Hell, after waiting 4 months, the Army Corps of Engineers hit the ground running in North Caroline, Virginia, and Tennessee.
We haven't had a President this pro-American since James Monroe.

It's fascism. Simply, basic, fascism. There's no real hierarchy in fascism, which is exactly what these orders imply. Only if the Supreme Leader or his inner circle recognize it does it exist as law.there's a fuhrerprinzip involved for sure. it feels like we're not that far from Trump being declared the embodiment of the law and ruling by decree

Eh
60 Senators is on the table in the next 6 years or so if the GOP finally gets its shit together for the first time since forever, but we aren't getting that in 2026. We may flip Georgia and Michigan with competent candidates like Kemp and McClain but that's it. Even Sununu and Youngkin running in their states wouldn't be guaranteed flips considering those are lean blue states.
I think the long term outlook is pretty bright in the Senate if we stop running horrendous candidates like Sam Brown, Kari Lake, Hershel Walker and Dr. Oz. We should definitely win back one or both of each of the 4 Democrat-occupied seats in Arizona and Nevada (but none of those are up again until 2028), win at least one back in Michigan and at least one in Georgia. Beyond that it will be tough because Fetterman and Slotkin are playing the fake moderate game and Murkuntski is still a bitch rino that we'll have to jump through hoops to replace. Tammy Baldwin is a diehard progressive but Wisconsin seems to be the most worrisome swing state for the GOP along with Georgia, as incumbent firebrand Ron Johnson barely survived re-election as an incumbent against an atrocious, far-left opponent with Black Nationalist ties in 2022. Wisconsin is weird.
As far as the House goes it will be tough to get 67% or even 60% again for either side. Perhaps after the GOP gains seats after the 2030 census, things will be looking up there. Redistricting gerrymandering has gotten polarizing on both sides but in Texas the GOP was unnecessarily scared and put up a very defensive map. Meanwhile the Illinois Dems absolutely gerrymandered that state to all hell and it can't be fought over in court because none of those were "woke DEI" districts. I do think SCOTUS will overturn section 2 of VRA pertaining to congress seats some point this year meaning Alabama will be able to draw out one or both blue DEI seats and Louisiana will re-draw out the one DEI district the marxist court forced them to last year. If Georgia had any balls then GA-02 is easily removable as well. The House in 2026 in general is going to be a tight squeeze because you lost 4 seats each in NY and California and you basically have must-hold seats in Colorado's 8th (north of Denver), two NE Pennsylvania freshman reps, NE-02 (Bacon), two seats in AZ and a couple more here and there. They will have flip opportunities like MI-08 but OH-09 has proven tough and stubborn, maybe Ohio can redraw that map in our favor again hopefully. Utah Dems are pushing hard to get a blue seat in Salt Lake City. We'll just have to wait and see.
"If really don't care, Margaret." I think if the American people want more of what this administration is delivering, they'll put conservatives in office. Period.
Yet it remains a divided country. Sure TDS is at its weakest point since before mid 2015, but it'll come back with a vengeance at some point late this year or next, like the Bush-bashing post Katrina.

Trump pauses ALL federal grants, loans and other assistance, leaked memo reveals
By KATELYN CARALLE, SENIOR U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER IN WASHINGTON, D.C. and NATASHA ANDERSON
Published: 05:56 EST, 28 January 2025 | Updated: 09:59 EST, 28 January 2025
President Donald Trump is now using the power of the purse to bring diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the federal government to a screeching halt.
The White House budget office ordered federal agencies to freeze 'all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance,' which includes grants and loans that do not align with the new administration's priorities.
This is not meant to target any 'assistance provided directly to individuals,' such as Medicare or Social Security.
Rather, the leaked memo from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) details how agencies must now pause all more widely distributed federal grants, loans and financial assistance programs.
In the interim the agencies are tasked with identifying which one Trump would want to slash based on his slew of executive orders signed in his first week back in the Oval Office.
The actions would bring the budget into alignment with the president's push to end the government advancement of 'wokeness,' transgenderism, environmentalism and 'Marxist equity' or so-called diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs.

Elon Musk Lackeys Have Taken Over the Office of Personnel Management | WIRED (https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-lackeys-office-personnel-management-opm-neuralink-x-boring-stalin/)
This is a paywalled article (https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-lackeys-office-personnel-management-opm-neuralink-x-boring-stalin/) at Wired. But it makes a pretty good case that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is now basically being run at its highest levels by people installed by and working with Elon Musk. In other words, “DOGE” seems to be calling the shots at OPM, even though it’s run by people who aren’t even federal employees. Most of these people appear to come from Musk’s various companies. Wired declined to publish the names of two of the people because of their age. One graduated from high school last summer.
Some of this is already known. The nominee to run the agency, Scott Kupor, is a partner at the Andreessen/Horowitz VC firm. They’re aligned with Musk politically. So that’s consistent with the rest of the story. But it seems the upper echelons of the agency has already been stocked with a mix of Musk’s people and Republican operatives, notwithstanding the fact that this is a federal agency which is usually made up almost entirely of career staff.

building an email server for government-wide communication has obvious security implications
the communication system will be needed for mass firings and direct, top down intimidation of federal workers by the boss.
Russ Vaught has promised to make federal workers' lives hell, this is one way to do it.
The lawsuit alleges that OPM has not conducted a Privacy Impact Assessment "for this unknown email server or any system which collects or maintains Personally Identifiable Information ('PII') obtained from its use." It also says that OPM has not ensured a review of a PIA by a chief information officer or equivalent official and that it has also not published an assessment or made it available for public review.
"OPM's failure to take these steps constitutes agency action unlawfully withheld or unreasonably delayed in violation of 5 U.S.C. § 706(1)," the lawsuit says.

...Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who is now in charge of Trump's new Department of Government Efficiency, famously sent a similar email to employees shortly after he took over Twitter, which he renamed X, asking them to opt in to keep working at the company.
White House officials wouldn't say whether he was involved in the current effort. But the subject line of the email that will be sent to federal workers is: "Fork in the Road."
It's the same subject line Musk used in that email to Twitter employees. And Musk now has a post pinned on X of an art piece he commissioned called "A Fork in the Road."...."

pausing everything in government to make sure no one in government is doing something the leader disapproves of ain't the American way
These were some of the effects of President Trump’s federal funding freeze on the postdoctoral researchers who rely on grants from the National Science Foundation. Though a judge blocked that suspension on Tuesday before it could take effect, and the administration rescinded the memo that ordered it on Wednesday, on Thursday the NSF’s online payment system was still down, throwing lives into uncertainty. An NSF email seen by STAT suggested salaries had been suspended to “ensure only eligible activities” are funded.
“If the freeze is not stopped, I might lose my house,” said one biologist doing a postdoctoral fellowship in the southeast, who spoke on condition that neither his name nor his state of residence be used, out of fear of retaliation. He said he had enough in his bank account to last until March, but had no idea how long the pay stoppage might last.

President Donald Trump fired National Labor Relations Board member Gwynne Wilcox in an unprecedented personnel move that prevents the board from deciding cases and appears to violate federal law.
Trump’s partisan purge of Democratic NLRB officials in the late hours of Monday targeted Wilcox, the first Black woman to serve on the board. "DOGE instructed me..."
“DOGE instructed me to violate the due process of our employees by issuing immediate termination notices to a group of employees without due process,” a senior USAID official, Nicholas Gottleib wrote to USAID colleagues, according to a report in the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/01/30/usaid-trump-purge-foreign-assistance-freeze/) Thursday. “I was notified moments ago that I will be placed on administrative leave, effective immediately. It has been an honor working with you all.”

“The highest-ranking career official at the Treasury Department is departing after a clash with …Musk over access to sensitive payment systems,” the Washington Post reported (https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/01/31/elon-musk-treasury-department-payment-systems/) today. “The possibility that government official might try to use the federal payments system…to enact a political agenda is unprecedented.”

Last week, regional managers for the General Services Administration, or GSA, received a message from the agency’s Washington headquarters to begin terminating leases on all of the roughly 7,500 federal offices nationwide, according to an email shared with The Associated Press by a GSA employee.
The order seems to contradict Trump’s own return-to-office mandate (https://apnews.com/article/trump-buyouts-to-all-federal-employees-f67f5751a0fd5ad8471806a5a1067b5e) for federal employees, adding confusion to what was already a scramble by the GSA to find workspace, internet connections and office building security credentials for employees who had been working remotely for years.
But it may reflect the Trump administration’s belief that it won’t need as many offices due to its efforts to fire employees or encourage them to resign (https://apnews.com/article/trump-buyouts-to-all-federal-employees-f67f5751a0fd5ad8471806a5a1067b5e).
