What I saw felt like the natural endgame of the Trump project. For more than a decade Trump and his followers have been spreading a dark fantasy of America: one where every major city is overrun by illegal immigrants causing chaos and committing violent crimes.
Now, in Minnesota, that fantasy — spread through Trump’s own ceaseless screeds and online through YouTube and TikTok videos, Facebook posts and racist diatribes on X — is boomeranging back into the real world. Having imagined a violent war for the future of America, Trump and his minions seem set on creating one in Minnesota.

Over five days in Minneapolis, I witnessed a city on the edge of a nervous breakdown. It genuinely felt like an invasion — a hostile national force confronting furious locals equipped mostly with whistles, snowballs and funny signs.
In parts of the city, normal life continues undisturbed. Coffee shops are open. The bars were busy Friday night. In others, signs of the siege are everywhere: immigrant businesses are closed; schools are half full; convoys packed with ICE agents haunt the streets.
“What’s happening in Minnesota defies belief,” Gov. Tim Walz said in a televised address Wednesday night. “News reports simply don’t do justice to the level of chaos, disruption and trauma the federal government is raining down.”
Beginning in December, the Trump administration sent thousands of heavily armed and poorly trained (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2026/01/ice-recruitment-minneapolis-shooting.html) ICE and border patrol agents to Minnesota ostensibly to investigate fraud (https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/what-is-minnesota-social-welfare-scandal-that-has-drawn-trumps-ire-2026-01-14/) and sweep up illegal immigrants. But up close, what they’re doing looks more like mass racial profiling (https://www.thestar.com/opinion/star-columnists/donald-trump-sent-ice-to-minnesota-this-is-what-it-looks-like-on-the-ground/article_a52261ff-09f5-48d4-9290-6b49685e7a99.html) and violent counter-insurgency than it does policing.
“If you want to investigate fraud, bring an accountant,” Stancil, a Democratic activist and education policy adviser told me as we drove around his neighbourhood Monday. The ICE agents in Minnesota don’t look like accountants. They look like soldiers. And you don’t bring soldiers unless you want to fight a war.
What I saw in Minnesota — both in person and on videos captured by bystanders, reporters and volunteers like Stancil — was agents patrolling the state, gassing crowds, and detaining people, often violently. Those scooped up have included U.S. citizens (https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/ice-woman-car-minneapolis-9.7045672), Native Americans (https://www.startribune.com/ice-detaining-american-indians-minneapolis-leaders-say/601561760), pregnant women (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBhrQ1fgMGo), teenagers and dozens of Minnesota residents with active refugee claims. (https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/13/us/ice-arrests-refugees-minnesota.html) On Wednesday night, ICE agents allegedly attacked a car carrying six children (https://www.fox9.com/news/6-children-hospitalized-after-flash-bang-hits-van) with flash bangs and smoke grenades.

According to documents leaked to the Cato Institute last November, just five per cent of those detained by ICE so far that fiscal year had criminal convictions. Much of the police work ICE agents are doing instead, not just in Minnesota but around the country (https://austinkocher.substack.com/p/92-of-ice-detention-growth-in-fy), amounts to harassing anyone who looks brown or Black or anyone who speaks with an accent, demanding they prove their citizenship.
Jenny Macua, a mother of six who was born in and has spent her entire life in Minnesota, told me she was stopped by ICE on her way to work last week. “They asked if I was a U.S. citizen. They wanted my ID,” Macua, whose parents are Mexican, said.
I asked her if there was any plausible explanation for the stop. Was she speeding? Was her tail light out? The only reason, she said, was “my skin colour.”
None of this is hidden. ICE agents are openly going door-to-door demanding Asian, Hispanic and Black residents show their papers. They’re trawling local businesses, stopping drivers and harassing residents on the street.

if immigrants don't have due process neither do US citizens
Asked about U.S. citizens being asked to provide proof of citizenship in Minnesota and whether that is “targeted enforcement,” Noem said the following (https://bsky.app/profile/patrickryne.bsky.social/post/3mcixemlqvc2v):
In every situation, we’re doing targeted enforcement. If we are on a target and doing an operation, there may be individuals surrounding that criminal that we may be asking who they are and why they’re there and having them validate their identity. That’s what we’ve always done in asking people who they are, so that we know who’s in those surroundings, and if they are breaking our federal laws, we will detain them as well until we run that processing.
Importantly, Noem did not reject the premise of the question or reassure Americans that such a question is ridiculous. Instead, she merely tried to limit when and under what circumstances it is happening — and, presumably, will continue to happen — under her leadership.
But, with a closer look, even that falls apart.
First of all, there is a mountain of evidence that the first sentence of Noem’s statement is a lie. Ask Frank Miranda or Maria Greeley (http://frank%20miranda/), ask Jesus Gutiérrez or Mubashir (https://www.lawdork.com/p/100-days-of-kavanaugh-stops-shadow-docket-bill), ask any of the “more than 50 Americans who were held after [immigration] agents questioned their citizenship’ during 2025” who were identified by Pro Publica (https://www.propublica.org/article/immigration-dhs-american-citizens-arrested-detained-against-will).
But, for a moment, let’s set that to the side.
The secretary of Homeland Security on Thursday said that if you are found in the vicinity of a person subject to DHS’s “targeted enforcement” operations, you are likely to be detained if you cannot prove your citizenship or legal status — if you cannot prove that to whatever agent might be involved in the operation.
The limitlessness of that is clear if one examines what she said — and didn’t say.
Noem didn’t say what constitutes the “surrounding” area. Given the broad evidence of sweeps of parking lots and places of employment, blessed by the U.S. Supreme Court in its September shadow docket order (https://www.lawdork.com/p/scotus-trump-immigration-raids-racial-profiling) allowing the racial profiling in the Los Angeles area of Latino people in low-wage jobs, the limitations claimed in her statement become virtually meaningless — particularly if you are not white.
Stops OK’ed in Noem v. Vasquez Perdomo have subsequently become known as a Kavanaugh stops (https://www.lawdork.com/p/talking-about-kavanaugh-stops-with) due to Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s opinion concurring in the order, the only opinion authored by any of the Republican appointees in the majority.
If, as Noem said on Thursday, the administration’s view is that anyone “surrounding” any person involved in a Kavanaugh stop can have their citizenship questioned — a Kavanaugh stop once removed, if you will — then virtually anyone in the U.S. could find themselves subject to a Kavanaugh stop.
On top of that, Noem didn’t say what constitutes “validat[ion]” of legal status — a question that kept one woman in detention for 25 days (https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2026/01/07/diaz-morales-maryland-woman-released-ice/) because DHS officials didn’t believe that she is an American citizen.
Further still, this comes as video evidence mounts of the violent, masked, anti-constitutional project being engaged in by the federal immigration agents sent to Minnesota and elsewhere. The lack of concern for the First, Fourth, and Fifth amendments is manifest, as is — Minnesota (https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mnd.230268/gov.uscourts.mnd.230268.1.0_1.pdf) and Illinois (https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.ilnd.492637/gov.uscourts.ilnd.492637.1.0.pdf) argue in their lawsuits against these mass-immigration-enforcement actions — the Trump administration’s attack on the Tenth Amendment.
Sharp abridgment of speech, free exercise, and assembly; unreasonable searches and seizures; an appalling lack of due process; and a complete disregard for states’ rights and the rights of the people.

Administrative detention and release of US citizens without explanation seems to be becoming a thing
DHS assaults people, throws them in an ICE hellhole for awhile, then releases them without charges or explanation
Once they reached the Whipple Building, Alice and Sophia were given one water bottle which they immediately drank. It left them with nothing to treat their tear gas wounds, and when Alice called to ask for more water and additional treatment, she said they were instead met with more casual cruelty.
“I pressed the call button, and I was like, ‘We were pepper sprayed. We need medical attention as soon as possible.’ And there was just a pause, and we heard laughter in the background. And then a lady was like, ‘It's gonna be a while. We don't have medical on-site.’”
The two were questioned separately by ICE officers, and Sofia was subjected to particularly invasive and humiliating questions. They asked her if she had had a sex change and if she had a penis. Alice said back in the cell Sofia told her she answered truthfully to both questions to avoid the officers from groping her for answers.https://www.thehandbasket.co/p/queer-trans-ice-protester-st-cloud-minnesota-alice-valentine

leaving aside the depraved indifference to the life of a US citizen they just shot, this is what folks are reading in People in the checkout line at the supermarket and Target
Moments after an ICE agent fatally shot (https://people.com/ice-fatally-shoots-driver-minneapolis-immigration-raids-11880880) a woman in Minneapolis, a man who identified himself as a doctor was barred by officers from checking on the victim.
Video taken by a witness in the aftermath of the shooting on Wednesday, Jan. 7 was obtained by the Huffington Post (https://x.com/yashar/status/2009024658281316835?s=46).
The video picks up after the woman's SUV crashed into a parked car after she was shot by the ICE agent
"Can I go check a pulse?," a man asks.
An agent tells the man, "No," and to back up.
"I'm a physician," the man replied.
"I don't care," one agent is heard saying, while another says that EMS is on the way and that they had their own medics on scene.
A woman then yells, "Where are they?," apparently referring to medical response, and is told to relax.
"How can I relax when you just killed my f—ing neighbor?," she responds. https://people.com/doctor-tried-to-help-woman-shot-by-ice-but-was-blocked-by-agents-11881473

prosecuting criticism by public officials as a conspiracy to impede or injure federal officers
very extreme
The federal inquiry is focused on a federal statute, 18 U.S.C. § 372, one U.S. official told CBS News, which makes it a crime for two or more people to conspire to prevent federal officers from carrying out their official duties through "force, intimidation or threats."
The statute has historically been used in cases involving coordinated efforts to obstruct federal officials, including actions involving violence or threats. Public criticism of federal policy has historically been treated as protected speech unless involving direct coordination or incitement to obstruct law enforcement.

US citizen targeted for no good cause -- er, skin tint and head covering -- roughed up and detained for two days by ICE
Ahmed, who lives with an aunt in the complex off Lower Afton Road in St. Paul, said she had just left home around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to pick up her prescription medication when two Somali-American men ran past her in the parking lot.
https://i0.wp.com/www.twincities.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/STP-L-AHMED-0117-04.jpg?fit=620%2C9999px&ssl=1
Nasra Ahmed, 23, photographed outside a relative’s apartment near Lower Afton Road in St. Paul on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, where she was forcibly detained by federal immigration agents on Wednesday, suffering cuts and bruises to her face and legs. She spent two days at the Sherburne County Jail before being released without charges on Friday night. She is a U.S. citizen, born in Minnesota, with no documented criminal history. (Frederick Melo / Pioneer Press)She suddenly found herself in the middle of a group of ICE agents who had been chasing them, she said. The armed agents demanded to see her identification, and she complied.
The situation quickly escalated anyway, she said, with an agent calling her a racial slur and another telling her they were “making America great again.” In videos of the incident recorded by neighbors (https://x.com/mohamudnoor/status/2012639393970786478?s=20) and circulating on social media, a dozen masked agents can be seen surrounding her, forcing her to the ground and then into a car.
A jail roster later listed her as 5-foot-4-inches and 112 pounds — an unlikely threat to a team of agents, at least in her own eyes.
“They used a lot of force to arrest me,” she said. “They pinned me. I have a bruise on my head. I’ve been having head pain since that incident. My whole body is aching. … I was crying. I was screaming.”
Two days in detention
Ahmed said her cellular phone was confiscated and has yet to be returned. She was driven by two agents — a Latina and the driver, a Caucasian man — to the Whipple Federal Building at Fort Snelling, where she said she shared a detention cell with a woman who had suffered gashes to her legs that had bloodied her pants.
The woman, who was Native American, told Ahmed she had been forcibly removed from her car.
Ahmed was soon transferred to the Sherburne County jail in Elk River, which serves as a holding facility for ICE. A jail roster listed her as being held pending federal felony charges, but it provided no additional details.
Ahmed, a former Amazon warehouse employee, has been taking time away from working since suffering repeated medical episodes that include seizure-like symptoms. On Thursday, she said, she had another episode, which may have been stress-induced.
She was taken, shackled, to an Allina hospital, where she was given an MRI and held overnight under watch.
“The way they treated me during that episode while I was transported, I was cuffed from my hands to my legs. I was covered in chains,” she said. “They had a padlock on me. … While I was in the hospital, if I needed to go to the restroom or I needed to get up, they had chains on me like Hannibal Lecter, pretty much.”
she was returned Friday to the Sherburne County jail, and then moved back to the Whipple Building, where she was released around 7:45 p.m. Friday (https://www.twincities.com/2026/01/17/st-paul-woman-u-s-citizen-released-from-ice-detention-after-two-days/) without charges

US citizens detained without cause were offered money and legal lenience to rat out others, released without charge, then teargassed
And Sigüenza, who like his friend O'Keefe is a U.S. citizen, said an immigration officer who questioned him Sunday even offered him money or legal protection if he gave up the names of organizers or neighbors who are in the country illegally.
“At one point, the officer said in vague terms that it looks like I’m in trouble, and he could possibly help me out,” Sigüenza said, noting he refused the offer.
DHS, which oversees Immigration and Customs and Enforcement and the Border Patrol, didn’t immediately respond to a Tuesday request for comment.
Sigüenza and O’Keefe, who are among an unknown number of Twin Cities residents observing the immigration officers in action, were detained Sunday while following ICE officers who were driving around and making arrests. The officers stopped in front of O’Keefe's car, fired pepper spray through her windshield vent and smashed her car's windows even though the doors were unlocked, the two told The Associated Press.
According to O’Keefe, the agents mocked her looks and laughed at her. She said they also brought up the killing of Good (https://apnews.com/article/ice-shooting-minneapolis-minnesota-9aa822670b705c89906f2c699f1d16c5), a 37-year-old mother of three who was shot in the head last week by an ICE officer in front of her wife.
O'Keefe said the officer who sprayed their car Sunday threatened them, saying that “obstructing” their work was how Good got killed.
“It was very clear that they were trying to just humiliate me, break me down,” O’Keefe said.
Sigüenza and O’Keefe said they were arrested and taken in separate unmarked SUVs to the highly restricted federal facility (https://apnews.com/article/minneapolis-shooting-congress-visit-ice-6076e28eab9201d33e2140a593228e60) on the edge of Minneapolis that's serving as the crackdown's main hub. They were put in adjacent cells reserved for U.S. citizens, one for men and the other for women. Each cell was also being used for other detainees and was no larger than 10 feet by 10 feet (about 9 square meters), with a concrete bench, flat-screen TV, two-way mirror and surveillance camera.
On their way to the cells, they saw other detainees who were screaming and wailing for help, though most were dejectedly staring at the ground, they said. In one instance, they observed a woman who was trying to use a toilet while three male agents watched. The overwhelming majority of detainees were Hispanic men, though some were East African — Minnesota is home to the country's largest Somali community (https://apnews.com/article/trump-immigration-somalia-temporary-protected-status-minneapolis-61eb5fecfa10a9b44b8c8e543412f684).
“Just hearing the visceral pain of the people in this center was awful,” O’Keefe said. “And then you juxtapose that with the laughter we heard from the actual agents. ... It was very surreal and kind of shocking.”
Sigüenza said one of his cellmates had a cut on his head and the other had an injured toe, but neither was offered medical help. Their requests for water or to go to the bathroom outside their cells were also ignored, he said.
O'Keefe and Sigüenza were able to speak with lawyers, but only Sigüenza allowed to make a phone call — he called his wife.
Sigüenza, who is Hispanic, said DHS investigators took him to another room and offered him money or legal protection for any family members who might be in the country illegally in exchange for giving up the names of protest organizers or neighbors who don’t have legal immigration status. But he said he refused the offer, noting that he doesn't have any family members without legal status.
Sigüenza and O’Keefe, who have shared their story widely on social media, were let go by evening without charges.
Once they left the facility, they were again hit with chemical agents officers were using on protesters in the area.
“We were not charged with a crime,” said Sigüenza. “We were released and then tear-gassed on our way out.”

Attorneys say they have received a variety of explanations for why they cannot see their clients, including claims that they did not have appointments, that their clients did not ask for them by name, and that the Whipple building cannot accommodate attorney-client visits. None of those reasons is legally valid, according to the attorneys.

Purple Heart US veteran arbitrarily detained, denied access to legal counsel
“They did offer bathroom breaks and water breaks, and I did ask for a band-aid and they gave it to me,” Vermie said. “But I’d rather have a lawyer than a band-aid when I’m being detained.”
Attorney John Chitwood, who said he was hired by Vermie’s family, said he went to the Whipple Building and waited hours to speak with his client. Chitwood said he was told he could not meet with Vermie because Vermie had not requested him by name — something Vermie wouldn't have known since he did not get in contact with family.
“I have represented people accused of the most horrific crimes, and I have never encountered the type of stonewalling, deliberate stonewalling and delay, that I experienced in trying to see Will,” Chitwood said.

DHS launches another racist pogrom in Maine, everyday life is severely disrupted
Westbrook Mayor David Morse said in a social media post (https://www.facebook.com/WestbrookMayor/posts/pfbid02G7Esf2WAHy6MtZKCqRQCt48ri8RzUfafWroFkdEksej yCDQ8uCcegD582sjYZ3Wbl) that ICE has been actively conducting operations and detaining people in Westbrook on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"At least one peaceful US citizen observer from Westbrook was targeted for intimidation by a masked federal law enforcement officer this morning," Morse said. "This is outrageous behavior from a federal authority, and I stand by our citizens’ rights to peacefully observe and/or protest."
Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline also released a statement Wednesday, saying Lewiston stands for the dignity of all the people who call Maine home.
"ICE's terror and intimidation tactics reflect a complete lack of humanity and concern for basic human welfare. These masked men with no regard for the rule of law are causing long-term damage to our state and to our country," Sheline said. "Lewiston stands for the dignity of all the people who call Maine home. We will never stop caring for our neighbors."
Reports of increased ICE activity spread across southern Maine on Tuesday (https://www.newscentermaine.com/article/news/local/maine-immigration/reports-of-ice-activity-cause-concern-brief-school-lockouts-in-maine-on-tuesday-portland-maine/97-477a8d5b-8296-48c6-b7b2-be36b677b216), prompting brief school lockouts and rising anxiety among immigrant communities.
Two Portland schools—Deering High School and Lincoln Middle School—briefly locked their doors around 9 a.m. after reports of ICE agents possibly on nearby Brighton Avenue. No threat was found, and the lockouts were quickly lifted, district officials said.
"This is an understandably tense time in our community, as reports and rumors of immigration enforcement actions grow," a statement from Portland Public Schools said. "The Portland Public Schools will continue to follow our protocols for keeping students and staff safe, while also staying focused on our core work of teaching and learning. We will continue to provide updates directly to our PPS community as we have information to share."

the National Guard was posted to DC to fight crime, but they're not allowed to do anything
Meanwhile, members of the National Guard from other states had been dispatched to DC. Those troops, the soldier says, were given the more public-facing roles—like patrolling street corners and the Metro—where they were exposed to heckling and abuse. I asked how they spent their days. “Have you ever seen them do anything?” he replied. “They’re just standing there. They smile. They wave. They walk around and quote-unquote ‘patrol.’ ” The National Guard is not law enforcement, he stressed. Members generally can’t arrest or detain people, so there isn’t much that they’re authorized to do.
Officially, Trump’s “DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force (https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/making-the-district-of-columbia-safe-and-beautiful/)” is about protecting the city from violence in the wake of several high-profile crimes. Some locals and tourists appreciate it. Some have thanked servicemembers on the streets. But to many, the military presence has looked like authoritarianism. The soldier said he’s never seen this level of animosity toward members of the Guard. Civilians are “yelling in our face, recording us, taking pictures of us, walking away looking scared.” He blames the President’s rhetoric, which he feels has pitted soldiers against the communities in which they live and serve.
Responding to a summary of the soldier’s opinions of this deployment, a spokesperson for the DC National Guard wrote that servicemembers “bring a wide range of perspectives to any mission, particularly one conducted in a highly visible and complex environment. The DC Safe and Beautiful mission was established to support District and federal partners through a whole-of-government approach focused on public safety, deterrence through presence, and community confidence—not to replace civilian law enforcement.” The statement also noted that guardsmen “perform a range of public safety support functions,” including “providing medical assistance, administering naloxone to reverse overdoses, reuniting lost minors with their families, deescalating violent incidents, and supporting law enforcement apprehensions.” The National Guard’s “enduring responsibility,” the statement says, “is to serve the American people—often in challenging circumstances—by strengthening public safety, reinforcing trust, and supporting democratic institutions at home.”
But the soldier does not believe that Safe and Beautiful has served those ends. To be clear, his dissent isn’t ideological. He trends Republican, and he voted third party for President in 2024. He simply thinks the mission doesn’t make sense. Local crime is a problem, he said, though not bad enough to justify bringing in federal troops. And he believes that it’s wrong—“objectively unnecessary and almost wicked”—to station armed soldiers on street corners as props in the deterrence of crime. “I love my country and I love the Army,” he said, “but this is not what I signed up to do.”

detained Minnesotans saved an ICE agent's life but got taken to ICE detention anyway
The ICE vehicle had barely made it two blocks when something went wrong.
Tippy Amundson, 39, and Heather Zemien, 55, were sitting handcuffed in the back seat of a three-row SUV on the afternoon of Jan. 22 in Brooklyn Park, detained by federal immigration agents and heading toward the Whipple Federal Building. The third row had been folded down. One agent sat behind them without a seat belt. Two others were in front.
They were stopped at a light when the agent in the front passenger seat said out loud that he wasn’t feeling well.
Then his body began to tilt. His arms flailed. His words dissolved into sounds that didn’t make sense.
“To us, it was obvious,” Amundson said. “It wasn’t obvious to them.”
Amundson and Zemien were the only ones who recognized that the man was having a seizure. They spoke up immediately, telling the driver to pull over and telling the agents to call 911. When nothing happened, they repeated it, louder and more urgently.
The account that follows is based on interviews with Amundson and Zemien. Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not respond to requests for information about the incident or questions about its medical and safety protocols.
Amundson and Zemien said they were advised by attorneys not to talk about why they were being held.
The SUV lurched over a curb and came to rest at an angle on the sidewalk near Welcome Avenue, just off a busy stretch by an Aldi. Amundson could hear the agent’s tongue and fluids blocking his airway. She asked to be uncuffed.
“He’s going to stop breathing,” she told them.
Amundson, a kindergarten teacher who has received CPR and first-aid training through school emergency planning, moved without hesitation once the cuffs came off. The agents stepped out of the vehicle, leaving the driver’s door open, the engine running and the keys inside. Weapons were still in reach.
Amundson ran around the car and knelt beside the agent, trying to turn him onto his side. She spoke to him calmly, telling him he was safe and that help was coming. She said she was aware that people having seizures can often hear what’s being said around them.
When he began to lose consciousness, she moved his gun from its holster so she could position him properly. She cradled his head as another seizure came.
Zemien, a personal care attendant, grabbed one of the agents’ tactical vests from the ground, rolled it up and slid it under his head to keep his airway open. She told the agents to shut the car doors so he wouldn’t lose body heat.

“He had two more seizures after that,” Zemien said. “We had to tell them every step of the way what to do.”
By the time emergency medical responders arrived, the women had been holding the agent steady for several minutes. They were detained but acting as first responders to the man who had detained them.
Once the agent was transferred to medical care, Amundson and Zemien were placed into another vehicle and driven to Whipple anyway.
“I asked if we could just go home,” Amundson said. “I said, ‘We just saved his life. Is that cool with you?’ And they said no.”
On the drive, Amundson asked when they would be allowed to call a lawyer. An agent told her they “should” be able to at Whipple but said he didn’t really know the policy. After a pause, he added that because they had helped one of the agents, they could call one person.
Zemien called her attorney. By then, their support network was already mobilizing. Using a voice command to text a message during the detention, Amundson had managed to alert her husband, who contacted their state representative. Legal paperwork was already being gathered. A meeting at Whipple was already being arranged.
A commanding officer eventually approached them.
“We’re releasing you to your counsel and to your state representative,” the officer said, according to Amundson. “But you need to tell everybody that we treated you kindly.”
They were driven to the front of the Whipple Federal Building and released into their representative’s car.
What stayed with Amundson most, she said, was not the adrenaline of the moment but the realization that came while she was holding the agent’s head in her hands and keeping his airway open.
“I was hit so hard with the fact that this man would not do this for me,” she said.https://www.startribune.com/detained-by-ice-two-women-became-first-responders-during-agents-seizure/601569667?utm_source=gift

The two women said the contrast between the incidents was difficult to ignore.
“We were willing to do for this man, this human, what they were not willing to do for Renee Good,” Zemien said.
“It’s important for people to know how ill-prepared they are,” Amundson said. “And how untrained.”

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, Trump's former defense attorney, ordered US Attorneys and FBI to cease collecting information about the shooting and instead prepare civil rights charges against Renee Good, who was already dead
Aides to Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche directed the U.S. Attorney’s office and FBI agents based in Minnesota to shut down a civil rights investigation into an officer’s fatal shooting of Renee Good and instead alter it to probe Good for possible criminal liability, according to three people briefed on the discussions.
After Good was killed on Jan. 7, FBI agents drafted a search warrant to obtain her car to reconstruct the path of bullets that an ICE officer shot into the vehicle. But they were instructed to redraft their warrant and change the subject of the investigation from a civil rights probe to an investigation into a suspected assault on an officer, the people said. A federal magistrate judge rejected that warrant, noting that Good was already dead and could not be considered a suspect for a warrant.

NICK FUENTES (HOST): We're going to talk about Trump's potential invocation of the Insurrection Act in Minneapolis. I wish he would. I wish he would. He keeps talking about it amid the unrest and riots in Minneapolis in response to the ICE deployment. By the way, nobody has been arrested. Do you know that? There have been all these riots happening in Minneapolis. Last night, you have an ICE agent -- I think, actually it happened this afternoon. He shot a Venezuelan illegal because he was trying to arrest this guy and a bunch of agitators came out and hit him with shovels. And so ICE barged in, arrested everybody.
But in Minneapolis, there's straight up riots going on. They're shooting fireworks at cops, taking over hotels. It's mayhem.
...
Do you know that Minneapolis police arrested zero people last night? So when you see these videos of fireworks blowing up and cops getting beat and the absolute anarchy that's unfolding, nobody's even getting arrested. So Trump says, “I'll invoke the Insurrection Act.”
Bro, do it. Do something. Just stop chickening out. I'm just tired of the idle threats. “We're going to bomb you,” “we're going to tariff you,” “we're going to invoke the Insurrection Act.” Always chickens out. Just do it. You're the commander in chief. He does it every time. He did it during the BLM riots, he did it during the LA riots. Please pull the trigger. Please kill them, Mr. President. Please just kill them. Not actually. I don't actually, I'm not actually wishing for violence, but please send in the military and restore order. This is your country. You are the commander in chief of the armed forces. You are the chief executive over this country and it is lawless. Take some responsibility, take the reins, send in the military. If this Jewish communist running the city won't arrest these people, if this gay cuck governor, Tim Walz, doesn't do it, send in the military. That's why you were elected.
I don't get it. This happened the last time in Minneapolis, BLM, summer of love. Trump kept threatening, “I'll send them in. I swear I'll do it. I'll invoke the Insurrection Act.” Do it. Throw these people in jail. They are trash.

MAGAs haven't really thought through what the normie lib backlash looks like, but Chicago and Minnesota should be giving them some strong clues
Reflecting on it, one of the craziest things that happened yesterday - and it was clear even from rapid response reports - is how, after the shooting, DHS flooded many dozens of agents into the scene, effectively taking over the block. Not MPD or emergency services, the immigration agencies.
Part of the reason the mood in the area got so dangerous is because there was an army of federal agents there, for reasons no one could understand, and they wouldn’t leave and were probably to some extent trapped. But why did they come at all?? We have city/state agencies for this.Narrator: they came to cover up a murder

DHS picked the wrong state and the wrong city to pick on
In the days since ICE murdered Renee Good, something new has happened. Everyone is activated. Ordinary people—as in, people who don’t normally think that much about politics or where they fit on an ideological spectrum—have looked up and said, “No, what ICE is doing in my city is unacceptable, and I am going to be part of the opposition.” Networks for supplies, groceries, shelter, rides, medical care, and neighborhood patrols have burst forth on the sheer strength of everyone participating. This is part of all of our daily routines now, just as much as our jobs and our personal lives. Groups that started with whole neighborhoods in mind soon became so full that they’ve splintered into ten-block chunks, then five-block chunks, then specific locations within those areas. There is nowhere ICE can go in this city where they won’t soon be met by a dozen locals ready to record and impede their actions, and the whistles we’re all wearing mean that many other people will soon be at that location too.
They made a mistake in picking Minneapolis. They came here believing that the same old lines of division that animate their entire political project—race, culture, class—would be reason enough to keep people in their homes while they went about their violent work. Instead we are out there in every place they are, showing them that every person in this city is one of our own, that there is no such thing as other people’s children, that collectively we are not afraid of staring them in the eye. They can sense this. We can see them re-running calculations in their heads, every time we turn them away by being willing to stand there, get in the way, observe and document their evil. This enrages them. As we saw this morning, they are now killing us for it.
ICE is feverishly looking for some top-down reason this is happening. They are trying to infiltrate, but you cannot infiltrate a city’s collective character. They want to find the “orchestrators,” the “paid activists,” the political professionals scheming up the city’s response to their crimes. They won’t find any, because there are none. It’s parents worried about the safety of their daycare and schools. It’s neighbors worried about the family down the street. It’s anyone with a conscience—which is to say, it is everyone. And we are going to win. https://www.welcometohellworld.com/there-is-no-such-thing-as-other-peoples-children/

Federalism
Republican lawmakers in Maine are criticizing Secretary of State Shenna Bellows for her decision not to issue new undercover license plates to federal law enforcement officers ahead of a potential surge in immigration enforcement in Maine.
But Bellows said she wants more assurances from federal officials about immigration enforcement tactics before approving new license plates for undercover, unmarked vehicles.
Bellows paused issuance of the new undercover plates last week after receiving a request from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The pause comes at a time when community leaders in Lewiston, Portland and other towns are preparing for a potential surge of federal agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other agencies.
"Given what's happening in Minnesota, given the rumors of an ICE deployment to Maine, we made the decision that we are pausing the issuance of unmarked plates, which present as civilian plates . . . and they are not traceable to anyone," Bellows told members of a legislative committee on Tuesday...
..."Some of the stories of abuses of power in Minnesota and Illinois raise some concerns about how these plates might be used," Bellows said. "We want assurances from the federal government that the plates won't be used for lawless purposes."

promoting immoral and unjust policies will drive good people out of your own camp
Republican Chris Madel made a stunning exit from the Minnesota governor’s race on Jan. 26, saying he cannot support the national GOP’s “stated retribution on the citizens of our state, nor can I count myself a member of a party that would do so.”
In a surprise video announcement, the Minneapolis attorney said he supported the originally stated goals of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s operation in Minnesota, including the deportation of undocumented immigrants with serious criminal records, but the effort has “expanded far beyond its stated focus on true public safety threats.”
“United States citizens, particularly those of color, live in fear. United States citizens are carrying papers to prove their citizenship. That’s wrong,” Madel said.
Madel, who launched his campaign on Dec. 1 (https://www.startribune.com/minneapolis-attorney-chris-madel-announces-gop-campaign-for-governor/601532782), quickly rose from a relative political unknown to a top contender for the GOP nomination (https://www.startribune.com/who-has-early-momentum-in-the-gop-race-for-minnesota-governor/601547900). He won over many GOP activists with the communication skills he developed as a trial attorney and his status as a political outsider. He was consistently finishing in the top three in straw polls of GOP activists, in a crowded field of about a dozen candidates for governor.
“National Republicans have made it nearly impossible for a Republican to win a statewide election in Minnesota,” he said.
Madel said it’s unconstitutional to weaponize criminal investigations against political opponents and for ICE to raid homes with only a civil warrant.
He launched his campaign for governor as a staunch defender of law enforcement and had recently provided legal counsel (https://www.startribune.com/gop-candidate-for-governor-chris-madel-providing-legal-counsel-to-ice-agent-jonathan-ross/601564089) to Jonathan Ross, the ICE agent who shot and killed Renee Good in Minneapolis on Jan. 7.

spreading violence and terror, DHS puts the public and its own officers at risk
If Arlington residents see immigration enforcement operating in the county, some local elected officials are advising them to call 911.
County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti and Board member Takis Karantonis encouraged calling the emergency number. De Ferranti noted at a meeting (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRKdNeZiN8o) on Saturday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents “have no legal requirement to tell us when they come into our community.”
“It helps us know when ICE is in Arlington, so we can better pursue Arlington County’s law enforcement mission — preventing violence in our community,” he said.
De Ferranti argued that a lack of coordination with local law enforcement is part of a broader effort to sideline localities. He said he planned to bring forward, in coming weeks, “targeted and thoughtful” county resources for family members of those taken into custody or deported by the Trump administration.
“ICE’s approach is designed to provoke right now, and to seek out conflict,” he said.

the sources for this article are ICE/BPS officers
Oscar Hagelsieb spent nearly 25 years as an immigration officer and special agent, proud of his work enforcing federal laws.
But watching the chaos unfolding in Minneapolis, and the fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen there on Saturday, Mr. Hagelsieb said he felt anger and despair at how the Trump administration was deploying his former agency.
“You’re not addressing the problem by throwing a 500-pound gorilla into these inner cities,” said Mr. Hagelsieb, 52, who said he voted three times for President Trump and retired from the Department of Homeland Security in 2023. “It’s completely unfair to the agents who have been put in this position.”
“They’re causing chaos, and unfortunately it’s costing lives,” he added. “There’s only so much they can handle before bad things start to happen.”
For Mr. Hagelsieb, one particular worry is the number of ICE special agents taken off of complex criminal investigations to instead track down undocumented immigrants, many of whom have not been convicted of crimes.
A Times investigation (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/16/us/politics/dhs-agents-reassigned.html) last year found that agents at Homeland Security Investigations, which is part of ICE and is where Mr. Hagelsieb worked, had been reassigned from cases involving sex crimes against children, drug smuggling (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/25/us/politics/drug-arrests-gun-seizures-homeland-security-immigration.html) and terrorism.
“It’s like a local police department pulling a homicide investigator to conduct an operation against jaywalkers,” Mr. Hagelsieb said.
“We lost all trust,” one current ICE official said. “I’m not sure I can see how we exist three years from now.”https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/26/us/politics/ice-border-patrol-trust.html?unlocked_article_code=1.HVA.7GdY.i_0HMo 5pLBUt

the tipping point on Fox News was last night after Bill Melugin's social media post, after 36 hours of smearing Alex Pretti as a domestic terrorist
“Tomi, speak plainly with the audience right now,” Fox host Johnny Joey Jones told (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4036715) his co-host Tomi Lahren on Sunday night. “What we're getting from Bill — and as he cited, many of his sources are pro-what's happening as far as enforcing immigration and mass deportation — but what they're concerned with is every video we've seen so far doesn’t show him brandishing a gun, it doesn’t show him — it doesn’t substantiate the idea that he was there to commit a massacre or that he was a domestic terrorist.”
“Usually, when those words are used you usually have more than the fact that he had a gun on him as evidence, and that is what at least some officials are taking issue with,” he added.

threatening home visits to Mainers
Now, the volunteers in Maine say federal agents have started showing up at their homes and intimidating them or threatening arrest. Some of them, masked and wearing tactical gear, have issued stark warnings not to follow them.
In Minneapolis, where a similar large-scale immigration enforcement operation has been underway for weeks, some observers said they were threatened and detained for filming federal agents.
“ This was not about law enforcement doing their job, this was about a federal agent using intimidation to discourage lawful civic activity in my own community,” said Erin Cavallaro, one of the volunteers in Maine who said officers came to her home. “What I was doing was lawful.”https://www.pressherald.com/2026/01/23/ice-watchers-in-maine-say-they-were-threatened-by-federal-agents/

10A anti-commandeering consideration still alive in Minnesota
I doubt this judge will craft a remedy for MN, but the record will be fleshed out
To ensure that the Court has provided all parties a full opportunity to be heard on the issues raised in connection with Plaintiffs’ motion for temporary injunctive relief (Dkt. 5), the Court instructs Defendants to file a supplemental memorandum. In the supplemental memorandum, Defendants shall address Plaintiffs’ assertion that the purpose of Operation Metro Surge is to punish Plaintiffs for adopting sanctuary laws and policies; coerce Plaintiffs into changing state and local law; compel Plaintiffs to direct state and local resources to facilitate information sharing to aid federal immigration enforcement; and cause Plaintiffs to direct more state and local resources towards holding immigration targets in detention for longer periods of time than otherwise allowed. (See Dkt. 60 at 913; see also id. at 16–19.) The Court finds that additional briefing on this issue is necessary because it was explored most clearly in the Reply, in light of recent factual developments.1 1Plaintiffs point to statements by some named Defendants and others within the Executive Branch that post-date the filing of the motion for preliminary injunctive relief. (See Dkt. 60 at 1012 (citing statements dated Jan. 12, 2026 through Jan. 20, 2026).) Defendants’ supplemental memorandum shall address the factual basis for Plaintiffs’ assertion and discuss their impact on the legal analysis relevant to Plaintiffs’ claims.
Accordingly, IT IS ORDERED THAT Defendants shall file a supplemental brief not to exceed 3,000 words, on or before Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., addressing the issues identified. Date: January 26, 2026

solidarity with foreign-born community members
Many immigrants are afraid to leave their homes — let alone go to work — as masked ICE agents escalate their operations in Maine. But at apparel manufacturer American Roots in Westbrook, staff and community volunteers are trying to protect immigrant workers by standing watch as they arrive and leave for the day.
The company employs more than 80 people and more than half are immigrants, all here legally. But there are fears ICE agents could still target them, which is why the volunteers have come.
"We are forming a barrier," said Rabbi Rachel Simmons. She's one of several leaders from different religious faiths who have joined the effort. "We are standing between the workers who are being targeted and those who want to do them harm."
The group of more than two dozen volunteers stretches out in a line along the road, where ICE agents have been seen driving by on previous days. It's a wall of down jackets, yarmulkes, and brightly colored clergy stoles that blocks the view of the door behind them. They begin to sing as they wait for workers to exit.
The executive director of the Maine Council of Churches, Reverend Jane Field, said when ICE scaled up its operations last week, American Roots asked if a few faith leaders could come each day to help provide comfort.
"I'm like, 'Oh no, you don't understand," Field said. "We have a God squad we can call, you know, like, I'll just put the bat thing up in the sky.' And lo and behold, like 20 clergy were there that afternoon."
Members of the community have also joined the effort, even when biting wind adds an extra chill to an already frigid day.
"It’s cold!" said Julia, who works at a business nearby. She doesn't want to share her last name because she doesn't want to be targeted by ICE.
"I think this is one of those things where I really wish this wasn’t happening, but it's nice to see so many people are willing to come out here and freeze our butts off to show people we’ve got their backs," she said.
With the work at American Roots about to end and the human wall in place, it's time for the workers to leave. Company staff who are coordinating their exit are stationed both in and outside the facility, communicating through walkie talkies as they send out workers in small groups.
"We’ve got two coming down," a staff member said.
As the workers walk out the door, the co-founder and CEO of American Roots, Ben Waxman, quickly ushers them into their cars.
"Be safe! Be safe, ok?"' he tells them.
Waxman said he supports law and order, but that's not what's happening. He said the immigrants he employs — asylum seekers, refugees, and citizens — are all vetted and working legally in the U.S., and they're living in fear.
"We're spending tens of thousands of dollars to adapt to a situation that at its core is being told we're going after criminals," Waxman said. "There are no criminals in my company."

Maryland State Del. Adrian Boafo is proposing legislation designed to bar some sworn U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers from working for state police agencies.
Boafo told WTOP he’s proposing the “ICE Breakers Act of 2026,” (https://x.com/AdrianBoafoMD/status/2009753974837002444?s=20) which would disqualify ICE officers who signed up to work for the agency as of Jan. 20, 2025, from gaining employment in Maryland state law enforcement jobs.
Asked why those officers should be prevented from working for Maryland agencies, such as the Maryland State Police, Maryland Transportation Authority Police, Maryland Natural Resources Police and other state law enforcement divisions, Boafo pointed to the tone of the current ICE recruitment effort, saying, “There’s a moral debate at the center of it, and it’s playing before our very eyes.”

as a cohort, CBP gets prosecuted at a rate slightly higher than undocumented immigrants
it wasn't hiring the best before Trump started lowering standards and shortening the training
The Trump administration pledged to deport violent criminals—but instead, some of them have been on the payrolls of the federal government’s most aggressive agencies.
ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection employed at least 30 people with sexual and violent criminal histories in recent years, according to a report (https://static1.squarespace.com/static/68460a37f903140728c2ab29/t/69778cf390259b64581b65d9/1769442547408/UPDATED+30+ICE+and+Border+Patrol+Criminals.pdf)pub lished Monday by the Ohio Immigrant Alliance with research from the Pacific Antifascist Collective.
At least 20 of those individuals committed offenses with underage victims, according to the report.
The 30 listed individuals have been charged with a wide litany of crimes, including gunpoint sexual assault, child sex trafficking, aggravated assault, robbery, rape, torture, kidnapping, sexual abuse of a minor, and possession and production of child sexual abuse materials.
Their transgressions occurred between 2015 and 2025, with the bulk of abuse happening within the last two years.

Texas Monthly's Taco Editor gets pulled over by ICE
I am a man of privilege with plenty of resources, as is Rodrigo. Our parents survived so that we could thrive as educated and well-spoken individuals who pursue life, liberty, and happiness on a daily basis. But my working-class Puerto Rican parents instilled in me an aggressive pride for our Latinidad as well as a skepticism of authority, stemming from cultural views about the colonization of my homeland in 1898 and the subsequent destruction of large parts of my country’s food system, in addition to the forced sterilization of one-third of the female population between the 1930s and the 1970s.
The word “no” comes easily to me.
Yet when we were confronted by ICE officers, we capitulated. Or so it may seem. Rodrigo and I realized what we had to lose. We checked our instinct to resist in an effort to escape a potentially terrible fate. We did not want to hand over our IDs. We did not want to help reach a quota. We also did not want to be reduced to a headline. Our loved ones, we knew, needed us. But we protest in small ways, including by documenting the stories of immigrants (https://www.texasmonthly.com/video/rosas-kitchen-san-antonio/). In the moment, we went into survival mode, but we thought we were supposed to be past that.
The day after the three traffic stops, we remained rattled. We tried to crack jokes during breakfast, but it wasn’t enough. I suggested we visit Café Piro, across from Socorro Mission, in Socorro, southeast of El Paso. There we would find safety and nourishment. We would be met with hugs and conversations with our friends, the coffee shop’s owners, Gabe and Melissa Padilla. We sat for hours with another friend, chef and Socorro native Enrique Lozano, consoling one another.
Afterward, Enrique and I visited the chapel at Socorro Mission, originally known as Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción de los Piros de Socorro del Sur, where we listened to the church caretaker offer stories of the Native peoples of the area and their significance. Enrique and I sat to pray briefly, and as we left, the caretaker gave me a Spanish-language prayer card with the image of my patron saint, San Martín de Porres.

ICE allegedly winds down in Maine
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has ended its enhanced enforcement operations in Maine (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/01/21/maine-ice-immigration-operation-lewiston-portland/88286880007/), Sen. Susan Collins announced on Jan. 29.
A little over a week after the Department of Homeland Security launched “Operation Catch of the Day," expanding its deportation campaign over the objections of local officials, Collins said Secretary Kristi Noem (https://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/kristi-noem/) informed her "ICE has ended its enhanced activities in the State of Maine."
"There are currently no ongoing or planned large-scale ICE operations here," Collins said in a post (https://x.com/SenatorCollins/status/2016830738595794944) on social media early the morning of Jan. 29.

drinking his troubles away on the job
A U.S. Customs and Border Patrol employee was charged with drunken driving in St. Paul after a state trooper found him passed out in a car Tuesday morning “covered in vomit.”
The state trooper found 31-year-old Alfredo Mancillas Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas, “slumped over in the driver’s seat” at 3:25 a.m. Tuesday in the Hamline-Midway neighborhood near Allianz Field, according to charges filed that day by the St. Paul City Attorney’s Office.
His car was parked in a no-parking zone and smelled like alcohol while Mancillas himself had “bloodshot and watery eyes,” the charges allege.
After failing a field sobriety test, Mancillas refused to submit a breathalyzer test. He was arrested, booked into the Ramsey County jail and charged with 3rd and 4th degree driving while impaired.

Mancillas appeared in court Tuesday, and was released on his own recognizance, according to court records. He was denied a request for a public defender, and had no attorney publicly listed on his case at the time this story was published.

the putative doxxing danger so far is completely speculative but for verbal threats
A review of DHS (https://www.dhs.gov/news-releases/press-releases) and ICE (https://www.ice.gov/newsroom) press releases since January 2025, though, indicates that this theoretical scenario has never actually occurred. At no point in time has an officer been seen conducting his work, identified and subsequently attacked. While there have been threats issued against agents and incidents of off-duty harassment, there are no known incidents in which an officer was assaulted while off-duty because he was identified as a federal agent.

happening all over the country
At the time of the incident, the worker was driving alone on her way to pay her family’s rent when a vehicle without a license plate began following her for several blocks. That vehicle stopped in front of her, and she found herself boxed in between that vehicle and another car. Four people with masks exited the vehicles. They were wearing green black vests that said POLICE.
The first individual banged on her driver’s side window yelling “Papers! Papers!” Within seconds, they broke her window. The worker did not speak. She held her breath and closed her eyes, fearing they would spray a chemical agent in her face. She panicked, believing that she would likely die if they did, as she has severe asthma and is medically fragile, taking 11 different medications.
After breaking the window, the agents forcibly dragged her from her van. Another agent grabbed her purse and emptied its contents onto the ground, where they found her U.S. passport. She had been carrying it because her daughter had told her to carry her passport everywhere she goes, advice her daughter learned at a Know Your Rights training. When the agents saw her U.S. passport, they let her go and left without a word.
She was left alone hurt and shaken before her daughter was able to find her. She was released from the hospital late this evening, where doctors found that she had suffered a concussion, a torn rotator cuff, and bruised ribs.
At the time that she was attacked, she was on an errand to pay her family's rent and to pick up a small cake to celebrate her grandson's 14th birthday. That child and his younger brother both have Huntington’s disease, a terminal degenerative brain disease. Our member is their main caregiver, and her daughter works full time. They had saved up to afford their rent and try to have a small birthday celebration and that is now gone.

https://i.imgflip.com/aitu1g.jpgIt fits
Britannica definition fits
pogrom, (Russian: “devastation,” or “riot”), a mob attack, either approved or condoned (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/condoned) by authorities, against the persons and property of a religious, racial, or national minority. The term is usually applied to attacks on Jews (https://www.britannica.com/topic/Jew-people) in the Russian Empire (https://www.britannica.com/place/Russian-Empire) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.https://www.britannica.com/topic/pogrom
Collins definition:
A pogrom is organized, official violence (https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/violence) against a group of people for racial (https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/racial) or religious reasons (https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/reason).
My Jewish Learning:
The word pogrom comes from a Russian word meaning “to destroy, to wreak havoc, to demolish violently.” The term was first used to refer to outbreaks of anti-Jewish violence by non-Jewish street mobs in the Russian Empire from 1881–1884. Pogroms continued to occur in the early 20th century and during and immediately after World War II in Eastern Europe, Germany and beyond. Historian John Klier notes that “By the twentieth century, the word ‘pogrom’ had become a generic term in English for all forms of collective violence directed against Jews,” including incidents that predated the term, and later was also applied to similar violence against other ethnic minorities.https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/what-were-pogroms/

When civilians are redefined as enemy combatants, the path is open to treat them with maximum brutality and erase their humanity. Q: You're a constitutional lawyer. Can you detail the 4th Amendment protections someone has if ICE approaches their home w/an administrative warrant?

DOJ ordering jump squads of AUSAs to accelerate prosecution of the public where DHS is operating would seem to be designed to burn out AUSAs
There's definitely some tension there
How do you ramp up federal prosecution when you're downsizing the prosecutors?
The Justice Department is requiring all US attorneys to rapidly assign prosecutors for “emergency jump teams” supporting districts handling alleged assaults or obstruction of law enforcement, according to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg Law.
A senior official instructed leaders of the nation’s 93 US attorney’s offices Feb. 2 that they have until Feb. 6 to designate one or two assistant US attorneys who’d be available for short-term surges in unspecified areas needing “urgent assistance due to emergent or critical situations.” The memo coincides with reports of mass resignations (https://news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/military-fraud-lawyers-replacing-minnesota-prosecutors-who-quit) of federal prosecutors in Minneapolis.
Rather than deploying volunteers to meet the needs of Minnesota or other districts experiencing protests from White House-directed boosts in law enforcement, the “jump teams” are designed to establish a standing list of prosecutors available on a rotating basis, said Francey Hakes, the director of DOJ’s Executive Office for US Attorneys, in her emailed memo.

enough with the casual use of tear gas on other Americans for no reason
Judge issues TRO reining in tactics against peaceful protesters and journalists at Portland OR ICE facility. Judge Michael Simon bars use of crowd control munitions against people who don't pose physical threat.

Backstory:
A week or so back, ICE detained a Cumberland, ME sheriff's deputy and left his cruiser running in the street with the door ajar
The sheriff was pissed at piss-poor policing and not even getting a courtesy call
Next he hears, DHS is subpoena-ing all his employment records
Federal authorities demanded information about those employed at the Cumberland County jail a day after Sheriff Kevin Joyce blasted immigration agents for arresting one of his guards.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement served the county with a subpoena for the employment data on Jan. 23, Joyce told the Bangor Daily News in response to questions on Tuesday. The request sought information about everyone who has worked at the jail since January 2025, the sheriff said. The county complied.
The reason for the subpoena, which has not previously been reported, is not entirely clear. It adds new detail to how ICE responded to the sheriff’s criticism of its tactics (https://www.bangordailynews.com/2026/01/23/mainefocus/mainefocus-police-courts/working-immigrants-donald-trump-ice-crackdown-maine-joam40zk0w/) during the agency’s surge in Maine last month (https://www.bangordailynews.com/2026/01/29/mainefocus/mainefocus-police-courts/maine-ice-surge-over-immigrants-scattered-across-country-n6hjn1me0n/). Joyce excoriated ICE during a press conference (https://www.bangordailynews.com/2026/01/22/portland/portland-police-courts/maine-sheriff-kevin-joyce-condemns-ice-recruit-arrest/) on the third day of the raid, a day after agents arrested an Angolan immigrant who worked as a corrections officer.
Hours later, the agency began removing detainees (https://www.bangordailynews.com/2026/01/23/mainefocus/mainefocus-police-courts/portland-maine-cumberland-county-jail-ice-detainees-moved/) it had been housing at the jail under a longstanding contract (https://www.wabi.tv/2025/06/17/cumberland-county-residents-demand-officials-cut-ties-with-ice-board-commissioners-meeting/) between the federal government and the county. An ICE spokesperson said it could no longer partner with a jail that employed an “illegal alien.” (https://www.bangordailynews.com/2026/01/27/mainefocus/mainefocus-police-courts/immigrant-removed-maine-jail-ice-lying-in-court-joam40zk0w/)
But the guard, Emanuel Ludovic Mbuangi Landila, passed multiple background checks after applying for the job in late 2024 and had a work permit, Joyce told reporters last month. The sheriff described him as “squeaky clean.”
Landila is one of several immigrants the county jail has hired over the past two years to help fill chronic vacancies and the second to be detained by immigration authorities (https://wgme.com/news/local/i-was-working-former-cumberland-county-corrections-officer-arrested-by-ice-maine-immigration-customs-enforcement-president-donald-trump) during President Donald Trump’s second term. A York County corrections officer (https://www.bangordailynews.com/2026/01/23/york/york-police-courts/ice-detained-york-county-maine-corrections-officer/) was also detained by ICE amid its surge in Maine. In a June interview, Joyce said the jail employed about 25 immigrants, all of whom passed background checks and required work permits to get hired.

wrote a polite but critical letter to a prosecutor in an asylum case and got served an administrative warrant that DHS spokeperson Tricia McLaughlin later described as a criminal investigation
this is Soviet-style social control
The Washington Post reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2026/02/03/homeland-security-administrative-subpoena/) that a retired Philadelphia man, Jon, 67, found himself in the government’s crosshairs after he emailed a lead prosecutor at the Department of Homeland Security, Joseph Dernbach, who was handling the deportation case of an Afghan refugee, identified as H, asking him to consider that the man’s life was in danger from the Taliban.
“Mr. Dernbach, don’t play Russian roulette with H’s life,” Jon wrote from his gmail account. “Err on the side of caution. There’s a reason the US government along with many other governments don’t recognise the Taliban. Apply principles of common sense and decency.”
Later that day, Jon received an email from Google notifying him that an administrative subpoena had been sent to them from the Department of Homeland Security “compelling the release of information related to your Google Account.” Federal agencies can issue such subpoenas without an order from a judge or grand jury, and Google gave Jon, who withheld his last name to protect his family from the government, one week to challenge it.
Laws are supposed to restrict the use of administrative subpoenas, but DHS has used the tool against dissent protected under the First Amendment to the Constitution. Jon could not find who in the agency issued the subpoena, let alone a record of it to show an attorney.
Days later, DHS agents showed up at Jon’s door. A naturalized U.S. citizen originally from the U.K., Jon was worried about potential violence. The agents showed him a copy of the email and asked to see his side of the story. They didn’t know about the administrative subpoena but said they received orders to interview Jon by DHS headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Eventually, the agents agreed that Jon had committed no crimes after he told them he found Dernbach’s email address through a simple Google search. Jon secured pro bono representation by ACLU attorneys, who argue that the government is violating a statute that limits how administrative subpoenas can be used for “immigration enforcement” and that the government targeted Jon for protected speech.
“It doesn’t take that much to make people look over their shoulder, to think twice before they speak again,” said Nathan Freed Wessler, one of Jon’s attorneys. “That’s why these kinds of subpoenas and other actions—the visits—are so pernicious. You don’t have to lock somebody up to make them reticent to make their voice heard. It really doesn’t take much, because the power of the federal government is so overwhelming.”

Remember the incident where DHS claimed officers shot a guy because he attacked them with a snow shovel?
Yeah. It didn't happen. They shot him through the door of his own home. And then arrested him. And then lied about it. Again.
And they almost shot some kids in the process.https://www.startribune.com/ice-raids-minnesota/601546426
