FORREST GRIFFIN could be sidelined for the rest of the year after sources revealed his hand injury is worse than first feared.

The former light heavyweight champion broke his fist during his unsuccessful title defence against Rashad Evans last month and has since had pins inserted into his hand to help the healing process.

Griffin was originally set to be out of action until May but industry insiders told SunSport he will not be back inside the Octagon until Autumn at the earliest.

Rampage-Jardine Booked for UFC 96

Saturday, January 17, 2009
by Brian Knapp ([email protected])

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will lock horns with Keith Jardine in a showdown pairing two top 10 fighters at UFC 96 on March 7 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The UFC announced the matchup -- which adds some much-needed star power to the show -- on Saturday.

The bout comes as a bit of a surprise since many see Jackson as the No. 1 contender for Rashad Evans’ UFC light heavyweight crown.

Affiliated with the Wolfslair Academy, the 30-year-old Jackson (29-7) has posted seven wins in eight fights, a disputed split decision loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 86 the lone blemish. He knocked out longtime nemesis Wanderlei Silva at UFC 92 in December, launching himself back into title contention. Earlier this month, Jackson pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor charges associated with a high-speed chase that ended in his arrest in July; the plea deal will likely allow him to avoid jail time.

Jardine (14-4-1), based out of Jackson’s Submission Fighting in Albuquerque, N.M., last fought at UFC 89 in October, when he earned a split decision against Brandon Vera. He also holds victories against former UFC light heavyweight champions Griffin and Chuck Liddell. The 33-year-old former bounty hunter staked his claim in the 205-pound division with an unorthodox style and vicious leg and body kicks.

WOW, if Forrest had won and not got hurt, they would have done Page and Forrest again since the first one was such a great fight and both are so popular. Guess Page will, wait for Evans to defend against someone else.. He should destroy Jardine..

Here is a good read from Sam Caplan from CBS Sports on who he thinks will be the "9 to shine in 09". It gives you some good prospects too look out for. The first one "Ben Askren" is my boy!

With the current generation of MMA stars such as Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Wanderlei Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Matt Hughes beginning to see the end of their careers in sight, the sport will have to look to a new generation of stars to ensure it continues to grow.

With the quality and quantity of athletes taking up the sport increasing, the growth and popularity of MMA might not only be able to sustain itself but also reach highs never thought possible.

The new year has commenced, and a new crop of fresh talent appears on the verge of breaking out. Here are nine names CBSSports.com believes will become the biggest breakout stars in the upcoming year.

Ben Askren: Askren is one of the most decorated amateur wrestlers in American history and represented the U.S. during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was the 2006 and 2007 winner of the Danny Hodge Trophy, given to the top collegiate wrestler. The 24-year-old was also a two-time NCAA champion while competing at Missouri, where he posted an amazing record of 153-8 during his four-year amateur career. He is also fourth on the all-time NCAA list for pins with 91, trailing only Gene Mills (107), Wade Schalles (106) and Larry Bielenberg (94). Training out of American Top Team, Askren is set to make his pro debut on Feb. 7 in Columbia, Mo., and will fight again on Feb. 26 in Miami. If you're looking for the next Matt Hughes, look no further than Askren.

Pat Barry: Barry is a former two-time U.S. Open San Shou champion and has also competed for K-1 and Chuck Norris' World Combat League. His credentials as a striker are very impressive, and he used his powerful leg kicks to put Dan Evensen away in the first round during his UFC debut at UFC 92 last month. Barry isn't a can't-miss prospect because he is undersized for the heavyweight division and his skills on the ground are a mystery at this point. But if he continues to work hard in his transition from being an elite striker to a complete mixed martial artist, we'll see him make a meteoric rise through the UFC heavyweight ranks in 2009.

Henry Cejudo: Now 21, Cejudo gained mainstream fame after becoming the youngest American ever to win a gold medal in wrestling in the 55-kilogram freestyle division at Beijing. Cejudo's plans are not entirely certain, but the former four-time high school state wrestling champion recently spent some time working on his boxing with famed trainer Freddie Roach. There have also been rumblings about a crossover into MMA, with rumors circulating that the WEC is looking to sign Cejudo for its newly created flyweight division (125 pounds). If Cejudo decides to fight MMA, it's the type of news that will transcend the MMA media.

Al Iaquinta: After amassing a perfect 14-0 record and accomplishing all he could on the amateur scene, Al Iaquinta is finally set to go pro on Feb. 20 in Atlantic City when he fights for Lou Neglia's Ring of Combat. The New York native was originally a grappler but picked up the striking element of MMA like a sponge. A dynamic athlete, Iaquinta's fighting style is not only effective but exciting. Despite only being 21, his upside is so tremendous that he might only be 12-18 months away from being ready to compete in the UFC's lightweight division.

Satoshi Ishii: He might not be a household name with the American public, but Ishii became an instant celebrity in Japan after winning a gold medal in judo as a super heavyweight in Beijing. Dubbed by many as the savior of Japanese MMA, Ishii has spurned lucrative offers from Japan-based promotions such as DREAM and Sengoku after deciding that he'd rather begin his career in the UFC. UFC president Dana White hosted Ishii in Las Vegas during UFC 92, and the promotion issued a press release soon after to announce that contract talks between both sides had begun. But Ishii could prove to be undersized for the UFC's heavyweight division and is rather green when it comes to MMA. To start his career in the UFC might be a detriment to his development, which White has acknowledged. Might we see the UFC sign him to a developmental contract? Or will they bring back heavyweights for the 10th season of The Ultimate Fighter and feature Ishii? It's hard to say for sure, but Ishii will almost certainly make his debut sometime in 2009. I would tell to remember his name, but you won't have to. That's because when he fights, you'll be hearing plenty about it.

Bobby Lashley: A two-time NAIA wrestling champion who later wrestled in the Army, Lashley might be better known in the public eye as a former WWE superstar who once held the ECW heavyweight title. But since leaving the WWE, Lashley's primary focus has been on MMA, and he made a very successful debut on Dec. 13, needing just 41 seconds to TKO Josh Franklin during a Mixed Fighting Alliance event. Little was learned about Lashley as a fighter during the squash match, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him follow in the footsteps of Brock Lesnar. Scheduled to begin a two-fight stint with the Palace Fighting Championships on Feb. 6, Lashley might only be two-three wins away from joining Lesnar in the UFC's heavyweight division.

Muhammad Lawal: Japan is desperate for new stars, and Sengoku has gained some traction with Lawal. After failing to make the U.S. Olympic team, Lawal increased his focus on his MMA training and debuted against Travis Wiuff at Sengoku 5 in September. Given the nickname "King Mo," Lawal made a huge impression after needing just 2:11 to TKO the former PRIDE and UFC competitor. Already 3-0, Lawal has the fighting ability and charisma needed to make it big in the U.S. A NCAA Division II wrestling champ in 2002, Lawal later transferred to Oklahoma State, which has produced the likes of Randy Couture, Jake Rosholt, Mark Munoz, Shane Roller and Johnny Hendricks. The 28-year-old will continue to build a following in Japan, but it's only a matter of time until he returns home and develops into a top five middleweight.

Jim Miller: If you're a diehard MMA fan, the name is one you're already familiar with. But 2009 will be the year that Miller becomes a household name with casual viewers. The proud owner of a 13-1 record, Miller is already 2-0 in the UFC with impressive wins over David Baron and Matt Wiman. His lone career defeat was against fellow UFC lightweight Frankie Edgar in 2006 when both were competing outside of the organization. Already gaining steam in the UFC's 155-pound division, don't be surprised when Miller joins Edgar as one of the top 10 best lightweights in the UFC.

Kirill Sidelnikov: Sidelnikov is the 20-year protégé of WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko. And just like his mentor, Sidelnikov will be competing during Affliction's "Day of Reckoning" event on Jan. 24 in Anaheim, Calif. Fighting on U.S. soil for the first time, Sidelnikov will have his work cut out for him against former UFC heavyweight title challenger Paul Buentello. Regardless of whether he wins, Sidelnikov belongs on this list because his upside potential is tremendous. While his ground game is a work in progress, the Red Devil fight team member is already one of the heavyweight division's heaviest hitters.

Honorable mention ...

Karl Amoussou: Amoussou is a big reason you should be tuning into the M-1 Challenge every Friday night at 8 p.m. on HDNet. MMA might not yet be legal in France, but that didn't stop Amoussou from going 4-0 competing for M-1 in 2009 and emerging as one of the best welterweight prospects in the world. An explosive striker, Amoussou appears poised to follow in the footsteps of Gegard Mousasi and Kirill Sidelnikov in '09 as the next great prospect that the M-1 Challenge has produced for the world stage.

Bogan Christea: At first glance, Christea's 5-4-1 record isn't all that impressive. But the native Romanian could be one of the toughest fighters currently competing in the sport. Any fighter who claims that an "armbar is not a submission" has the exterior needed to be a successful. Christea might not be technical at this point, but he's young and has only been training for a couple of years. Once his technique begins to catch up to his heart, he's going to become a star.

L.C. Davis: Davis is already 12-1 and has yet to hit his stride. Scheduled to fight Bao Quach during the undercard for "Day of Reckoning," a win will put Davis in line right behind Wilson Reis as the second best 140-145 pound fighter in the world not competing in the WEC. Blessed with gifted hands, Davis has a solid wrestling base and is going to break out big in '09.

Mike Easton: Lloyd Irvin has helped produced some of the most talented grapplers and fighters around such as Brandon Vera, Mike Fowler, Muhsin Corbbrey and Jared Weiner. Easton, a black belt and top competitive grappler, is already 5-0 as a pro in MMA and could find himself in the WEC's bantamweight division if he defeats former WEC 135-pound champ Chase Beebe during UWC's Feb. 21 event in Fairfax, Virginia.

Lyman Good: Good is a shining example of how MMA talent on the East Coast is being overlooked at the expense of fighters from the West and Midwest. EliteXC had been on the verge of giving the talented welterweight his shot at national stardom, but financial woes spoiled those plans. Good, an amazingly talented striker, has signed with the upstart Bellator Fighting Championships, which debuts on ESPN Deportes in April. One of the hardest workers you'll find on the East Coast, Good is going to be one of several new stars Bellator creates courtesy of its tournament format.

Danillo Villefort: Some fight fan have bristled at the recent news that Brock Larson will be getting a rematch against Carlos Condit at WEC 39 on March 1. The reality is that the WEC's welterweight division currently lacks depth. But Villefort, an American Top Team black belt, has decided to drop from middleweight to welterweight and will make his debut at 170 pounds against Mike Campbell at WEC 38 on Jan. 25. Make sure you pay close attention to the bout; Villefort has the potential to earn a title shot against Condit later this year.

"The Russian Bear" Oleg Taktarov was on hand for Affliction's "Day of Reckoning" press conference in Los Angeles, taking in the action from the sidelines of the press area.

The UFC 6 tournament winner has kept quite busy with acting projects in recent years, with major roles in studio films "Righteous Kill," "We Own The Night," and "National Treasure."

Recently, he worked on a reality series set in Atlantic City for Russia's biggest television network. Titled "Back on Track," the show takes ten down-on-their-luck fighters who need a second chance at glory. He enjoyed the experience, but the gambling city soon wore on him.

"I got bored a little bit," he said. "I want to get more excitement."

Spike TV has already offered to carry the show in America, but Taktarov says the producers are not interested.

"It's not just about fighting, it's about accomplishing something in life," he told MMAInsider.

Taktarov, 41, says he is injury-free and is playing soccer in his spare time. Fighting is not on the horizon, but could be...for the right price. He fought twice in 2008, ending a nine-year layoff from the sport.

"Once I get good offer in the right time," he said. "Those two fights, they came at just the right time, they were good money."

- HAZELETT OUT; RYAN MADIGAN STEPS IN TO FACE SAUNDERS
Thursday, January 22, 2009 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

A change has been made to the upcoming UFC 96 card slated for Columbus, OH as MMAWeekly.com has confirmed that Dustin Hazelett has been forced out of his bout against Ben Saunders due to an injury sustained in training. Ryan "The Lion" Madigan has been tapped as a replacement for Hazelett, and according to sources close to the fighter he has signed the bout agreement to face Saunders in his UFC debut.

Fighting out of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Madigan steps into the UFC with an impressive 5-0 record in MMA competition, as well as an extensive background as a professional kickboxer.

Madigan works out of the Jungle MMA training center based out of Ohio, and during his kickboxing career held a record of 8-2 as a professional, and 18-2 as an amateur.

Although the Ohio native has a solid kickboxing background, Madigan has also worked on his ground game, and has submitted his last two opponents, including a win over Brandon Pierce, who trains with Team Jorge Gurgel.

Saunders made quite an impression in his last fight after battering UFC newcomer, Brandon Wolff, with a series of Muay Thai knee strikes that left his opponent beaten up and finished in the first round.

At this time it is unknown if the bout will be featured on the main card or undercard for the show which will feature a main event of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson against Keith Jardine.

Bummer. That was a fight I was looking forward to.

AMIR SADOLLAH INJURED, OFF UFC FIGHT NIGHT FEB 7
Friday, January 23, 2009 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The run of bad luck for "Ultimate Fighter" season 7 winner, Amir Sadollah, continues in his post reality show career as MMAWeekly.com has confirmed that he has been forced out of his upcoming bout against Nick Catone at UFC Fight Night on Feb 7.

At this time the severity of his injury has not been confirmed, but sources indicated that the fighter suffered a broken clavicle in training that pushed him out of the fight. Calls to Sadollah's management were not immediately returned.

Sadollah and Catone were originally scheduled to meet in November 2007, but a last second leg injury forced the "Ultimate Fighter" winner off the card and instead of finding a replacement, the UFC opted to push their match-up back to February instead.

Before his previously scheduled match in Nov, Sadollah had a leg infection that put him in the hospital and out of action for an extended period of time, and if the injury reports are accurate, this latest ailment could keep him sidelined for an undetermined amount of time as well.

UFC TO OPEN NATIONAL CHAIN OF FITNESS CENTERS
Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - Press Release courtesy of UFC

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The fastest growing sports organization in the world, the Ultimate Fighting Championship in partnership with New Evolution Fitness Company (NEFC), on Tuesday announced plans to launch a nationwide and global network of UFC gyms.

“UFC Gyms is something we’ve been looking at for a long time, it completely made sense to me when we found the right partner in Mark Mastrov – this is the guy who has created some of the most powerful fitness brands in the world,” said Dana White, UFC President. “UFC gyms are going to shake up the fitness industry the way UFC shook up the sports industry. All the energy and excitement that we have brought to the fight business we are now going to bring to the fitness business. There is going to be something for everybody at all levels – from first timers to world class athletes – we’re going to get people excited and motivated to work out and get in great shape.”

“UFC Gyms” will be the first major brand extension for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the all-time industry leader in the sport of mixed martial arts. In alliance with NEFC owners Mark Mastrov and Jim Rowley, developers of many of the world’s most successful fitness brands, UFC Gyms will give UFC enthusiasts and fitness seekers alike the opportunity to practice the training techniques of famed UFC athletes, such as Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn.

UFC Gyms will provide all-around training, conditioning and health options for men, women and children of all ages.

“I have been a long time fan and admirer of the UFC. An introduction from a friend, Perry Rogers, to Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White of the UFC, immediately sparked the idea of combining the strength of the UFC with our expertise in the fitness industry," said Mark Mastrov, co-Founder, New Evolution Fitness Company. "The manner in which we approach business, the style in which we run our companies and the passion we share for fitness has made this an easy decision and a natural partnership. The fitness industry needs innovation, it needs something to get excited about and we all agree that UFC Gyms will deliver on that in every way."

Quinton Jackson Title Shot With a Win Over Jardine

"Yeah, I think if Quinton beats Jardine, he'll get the next shot at the title," said UFC president Dana White following Wednesday's UFC 94 pre-fight press conference in Las Vegas.

And that is regardless of the outcome of a key battle at UFC 94. Lyoto Machida, the No. 4 ranked light heavyweight fighter in the world, and No. 10 ranked Thiago Silva are slated for a showdown in the top undercard fight at UFC 94. Both have been on a tear through the 205-pound division and both are undefeated.

But while the winner of Machida vs. Silva is likely to narrow the field of contenders to the title currently held by "Sugar" Rashad Evans, it appears that Quinton "Rampage" Jackson -- with a win over Keith Jardine at UFC 96 on March 7 -- will jump to the head of the line.

White has stated in the past that Jackson vs. Evans might have already been on tap, but Evans was not fully recovered yet from his title victory over Forrest Griffin at UFC 92, so they put Jackson and Jardine together for the Columbus fight card.

I'd love it if Jardine won. Something about people being set up to win and then losing anyway makes me happy.

Not happening, they would have to wait too long for jardine (till November maybe?)

Forrest is noit ready yet I assume. Or I may be wrong.

We could also see a lyoto/thiago vs Forest and then fight for a title against rampage who will get a chance earlier vs Rashard :)

Thats kind of complicated because I read about the shrimp trade in a book about a vampire in the 1800's (trust me this is a good book even though it sounds bad at this point) which led me to look up the SM shrimp industry.

UFC middleweight Denis Kang will face UFC newcomer Xavier Foupa-Pokam at UFC 97 on April 18 in Montreal. Kang made his much-anticipated UFC debut at UFC 93 against Alan Belcher, yet lost via submission in the second round. Foupa-Pokam has a 20-9 record as a pro and is a veteran of Cage Rage, Jungle Fight, and Palace Fighting Championships. He is coming off a KO win over Kyacey Uscola.

Sweet Cain Velasquez interview!

It may seem absurd to suggest that a guy coming off knee surgery, and with only four professional fights, is all but a lock to be competing for the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title before the end of the year.

But then, Brock Lesnar, the UFC champion, is a guy who won the title in his fourth professional fight, so it’s hardly out of the question that Cain Velasquez could have the belt around his waist before 2010 dawns.

“No doubt about it,” UFC president Dana White says assuredly of the likelihood of Velasquez fighting for the title sometime this year.

Velasquez is only 26 and has been a professional for a bit more than two years, but he’s already learned there are no guarantees in this business. And so while so many around him are giddy about his prospects, and White discusses a title shot as if it’s a fait accompli, Velasquez is simply concerned with finding a way to defeat Denis Stojnic when they meet at Ultimate Fight Night Saturday at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., in a bout televised on Spike TV.

Velasquez is an overwhelming favorite to win, but he wants no part of that kind of talk. He’s prepared for Stojnic, he says, as if it were the most important fight of his life.

That’s a good move on his part, because it is. While Stojnic may be no Lesnar, a young and inexperienced fighter can’t afford a slipup and still land a title shot. With as many qualified candidates who are out there, even a prospect as highly touted as Velasquez must continue to win impressively to remain in the mix.

And so Velasquez has trained feverishly to prepare for Stojnic, a kickboxer with a 5-1 record who will be making his UFC debut.

“There are no sure things in this sport,” Velasquez said. “Denis is a super aggressive guy. He’s really strong and he likes to come forward. It’s a tough fight.”

A two-time All-American wrestler at Arizona State, Velasquez hasn’t been in anything remotely resembling a tough fight since he turned pro. He’s ended each of his four fights in the first round, with only one going past the halfway mark of the round.

He’s like the rookie outfielder that a team is so optimistic about that it puts him in the middle of the lineup and expects him to be one of the key players from Day One. Velasquez’s approach is more like he’s battling for the 25th spot on the roster.

“What other people say, I filter out,” Velasquez said. “I never listen to the hype. I have a long way to go. I need to get better in every area. Of course, you would rather people think highly of you than not, but in the end, that doesn’t really matter. What matters is how I perform and how much I learn.”

White is almost giddy about his new crop of heavyweights. In the last year, he’s added Lesnar, Velasquez, Shane Carwin and Junior dos Santos to a group that includes Randy Couture, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Frank Mir and Gabriel Gonzaga.

The promoter unabashedly says it’s the best group of heavyweights the company has had since he and partners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta bought it eight years ago.

“I’ve never been happier with our heavyweights in the history of the company,” White said. “We have a lot of great fighters and we have guys like Cain who are getting better every day.

“He’s one of the guys we think is going to be great and I definitely see him and Brock fighting at some point. That’s one of those fights that we haven’t even made and when you think about it, you can’t wait to see it.”

Velasquez lost a lot of momentum when he tore the meniscus in his left knee after his win over Jake O’Brien in July and required surgery. He said he doesn’t expect problems from his knee and insists he’ll be able to compete full out with no mental reservations.

“It feels like ages since I’ve had to worry about my knee,” he said.

If the knee holds up and he gets past Stojnic on Saturday, much bigger things are ahead. And he understands that because they have similar backgrounds, there are going to be plenty of comparisons between Lesnar and himself.

He’s not about to make one, though.

“It would be an honor to fight a guy like that, but I have a lot I need to do before I really even think about it more than a minute,” he said. “I’m trying to improve in every area. It’s not like I’m a finished product, by any means. I have a lot of questions to answer. I hope I have a good chin, but I haven’t been hit in a fight and I don’t know for sure. So I have a lot to do.

“The bottom line is, I can’t allow that kind of stuff to distract me or to get in the way of me doing what I have to do. When that time comes, if it comes, great. All I’m concerned about right now is the fight I have in front of me. I’ll let myself worry about that other stuff at the appropriate time.”

Cain is an absolute monster. Dana is grooming him. If Brock didn't beat Heath Herring I imagined Cain would of been fighting Randy. As it is this guy is a total package. He's not raw like Brock has great speed and agility for his size. Awesome stand up ground n pound he's amazing. He tucked a guy's hand under his leg had one knee on the other arm and was raining down blows of mass destruction to this guys head really fun fighter to watch.

In case you missed it, the mixed martial artist formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver gave us all a quick reminder that he still exists at the end of January when he posted this message to his MySpace blog denouncing President Barack Obama as "a rich white guy with a dark tan" (among other choice pronouns) and expressing his hope that "someone smokes that f*cker and every president to come."

Apparently the folks at Bellator Fighting Championships didn't think much of the former TUF cast member's political views, as they released War Machine this week, months ahead of the promotion's scheduled April 4th debut on ESPN Deportes.

Update on PPV numbers. For UFC 91 (Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture), the show is at this point verified as doing 920,000 buys. It will probably end up just under or possibly just over one million when all late buys are tabulated. UFC 92 (triple main) is at 1 million. We don’t have a number for UFC 93 based on actual numbers, but trending data indicates about 320,000 buys, a shockingly high number, as it would have beat out the live UFC 90 from Chicago and been nearly 100,000 more buys than any prior U.K. show.

Seems War Machine is being censored once again. I can't speak my mind at all without all the faggot higher-ups in the industry getting their panties in a wad. Just how my Evan Tanner bulletin got me kicked out of the UFC it seems I have been kicked off the Bellator show before it has even begun. Seems they don't like it when their fighters speak their mind on the politics of the USA and it's pussy ass presidents.

Guess I should just erase my MySpace and/or just keep MY opinions to MYSELF? So much for living in a "free" country right? So much for the "freedom of speach" right? I guess you're only allowed those things if you are a natural born citizen of the US.....or maybe only of you pay 30K+ a year in taxes....maybe only if you're not a convicted felon....HMMMM....wait a minute I match ALL of the criteria above. SO maybe the real answer is you can only enjoy your "freedom" when you think and say exactly what THEY want you to..
Well I say fuck that! I'm not changing for anyone or any dollar amount. I could have earned over a quarter million in that tournament but I don't give a fuck. I'm no one's sheep and I will always be true to myself and my beliefs.

According to Fighters Only Magazine, the UFC has added Cheick Kongo vs. Antoni Hardonk to the UFC 97 "Silva vs. Leites" card on April 18 at the Bell Centre in Montreal. Kongo has a 6-2 record in the UFC with his last win coming against Mustapha al Turk at UFC 92. Hardonk has won his last three fights in the UFC and is currently 4-2 with the company. The winner of this fight is likely to be considered a top challenger to the UFC Heavyweight Title.

UFC president Dana White still wants Fedor Emelianenko to fight in the Octagon. The thing is, he doesn't believe that Fedor, or at least his handlers, really have a strong interest in the Russian crusher coming to the UFC. Then again, he's not really sure what Fedor and his management wants.

"I want Fedor too, contrary to popular belief," he reiterated recently. In White's mind, it's just a matter of not being able to negotiate with Fedor's camp.

"I have no idea what they want. Everything makes no sense to me. I think they thought, 'You know, we'll partner up with these guys and we'll own a piece of this thing.' It's all mixed signals. You never know what these guys want," he stated, amused frustration in his tone.

"When I first met with these guys, (Fedor's) manager is like, 'Here's what we want to do. My brother is the biggest rock concert promoter over there. So here's what we want. We want you to build an arena in Russia,'" recounted White. "And I'm like, '(Expletive) timeout.' I want to sign a guy. I'm not looking to build arenas or get into business with you or anything like that. We'll pay him what he wants to be paid. We'll promote and do this and that. But it's not about Fedor when you talk to these guys."

Having built the UFC on the back of strong personal relationships in the fight game when there wasn't all that much money, if any, to throw around, the UFC President hasn't even met the No. 1 heavyweight in the world. "I've never met Fedor! I've never said one (expletive) word to the guy. I've never even seen him face to face."

The Fedor situation has strung out ever since Zuffa (the UFC's parent company) acquired Pride in spring of 2007. When the promotion was finally shuttered due to difficulties in trying to operate in Japan and several fighter contracts were either deemed non-transferrable or nonexistent, the UFC began signing fighters to new contracts. Fedor has been one of the only fighters to elude the MMA juggernaught.

At this point, it doesn't appear the UFC will ever be able to snare his services. White can only throw up his hands in frustration and move on.

"I don't know what they want... Fedor's one of these guys that, listen, everybody thinks that I won't give Fedor his props and everything. B.J. Penn and Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva and every other guy in this company fight the best of the best three times a year. Fedor's not doing that. If he wants to fight guys three times a year, prove he's the best, if he wants to do that, I'm willing to do it with him," says White.

"I don't think he cares about a legacy or any of that kind of stuff," he continued. "I don't know. I'd like to see him fight in the UFC."

Former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Frank Shamrock will face EliteXC, UFC, and PRIDE veteran Nick Diaz at Strikeforce's April 11 show at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. It is currently unknown which weight class the two will fight in, however Diaz has mentioned in the past that he has no problem moving up a weight class.

The April 11 Strikeforce show is expected to air on Showtime and will also feature Scott Smith vs. Benji Radach. It has also been rumored that Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez will also be on the card, but opponents have yet to be announced.

Oh... f*ck.

Former number one welterweight contender, Karo Parisyan, has tested positive for several painkillers, including Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone and Oxymorphone, following his controversial split decision win over Dong Hyun “Stun Gun” Kim at UFC 94: “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 31.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today passed along the results to MMAmania.com.

“The Heat” has been battling a nervous disorder, as well as injuries, which forced him out of a match against Yoshiyuki Yoshida less than 24 hours before showtime back in September 2008.

According to MMAMania, no other fighters tested from this card popped positive for any illegal or banned substances.

I talked with Mania before posting this and it is our understanding that a fighter cannot be taking painkillers prior to a fight to mitigate the ill effects of an injury or rigorous training. And even if Parisyan were to have disclosed this information prior to the bout, that candor would only have made his inability to fight official.

For longtime fans of Parisyan, his trajectory has been a very bitter pill to swallow. His quadricep injury prior to his title shot with Hughes was forgivable, but Parisyan has never seemed to rebound from the setback. By both design and accident, Parisyan is continually taking actions that jeopardize his career. What happens next is up to the UFC, the NSAC and Parisyan himself. I certainly hope he is able to get the help is so desperately needs.

Evan

MMANews.com was able to catch up with Josh Koscheck earlier today to discuss his upcoming fight at UFC 95 with Paulo Thiago and while the top ranked welterweight is focused on his UFC 95 bout, rumors were flying across the web that he would be fighting Karo Parisyan at UFC 98 in May. Koscheck commented on the fight during the conversation:

”I was suppose to fight him at UFC 98 on May 23rd but he tested positive for drugs or steroids or something like that, I’m not really sure, but that fight is now off. I will be fighting on the card but right now my focus is not on that fight. I’m focused on Paulo Thiago.”

Parisyan, in fact, tested positive for Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone and Oxymorphone, but he tells Sherdog that he openly gave the information on what prescriptions he was prescribed to the NSAC prior to the UFC 94 bout.

“The Heat” could face a lengthy suspension for the positive test - another UFC fighter, James Irvin, tested positive for similar substances in July and was handed down a nine month suspension.

I can see why he was cut, but Luigi's fights were usually pretty fun to watch.

Most of these guys were cut because the UFC is trying to trim down their roster to under 200 fighters, as a means to streamline their payroll, curtail the number of hanger-ons that keep getting fights despite just being journeymen and gatekeepers and to free up the ability to sign new/promising talent.

Clementi was nothing more than a gatekeeper in the UFC, and a s***-talking one at that. Luigi is a tough well-rounded fighter but it's clear he wasn't dynamic enough to make an impact in the UFC. Eddie Sanchez is the only one that semi-troubled me. Not because he was high-level, but he always came to fight (his battle with Hardonk was incredible) and is a good talent gauge for a weak yet improving HW division.

From UFC 95 conf call... :lol @ Diego apologizing to Dana for saying Fedor...awesome...

1:42 p.m. – Fighters are asked about their heroes in MMA and who they like to watch. Joe said Dan Henderson. Diego prefaces his response by apologizing to Dana White and said for him, it’s Fedor Emelianenko. Said he doesn’t even know if he’s human. Said he has no emotion in his fights and respects how he comes into fights wearing “the cross” and “honors the lord” after the fight. Said he also looks up to Anderson Silva but that he sees holes in Silva’s game.

1:44 p.m. – Joe also said he looks up to Fedor.

Anyone who watches MMA Live on ESPN.com knows that I am fair when talking about UFC, Strikeforce, Affliction etc . . . or any of the fighters. In the most recent episode, I spoke about Joe Lauzon's dominant win over Stephens. Joe has spoken negatively about me in several interviews lately but I call it like I see it. He did well against Stephens and dominated the ground action. I also spoke about Strikeforce being a great thing for mma fighters and fans. Criticizing fighters or even picking winners and losers is always tough but it is my job and what ESPN pays me to do. Most here understand that and many here supporting Barnett most likely never saw the episode.

I expected a dominant finish from Barnett because HE IS a top heavyweight going against a man in Yvel who doesn't have his ground skills. Barnett certainly dominated but for whatever the reason, he struggled to put him away. It was my job to tell people watching the show what I thought about the fight.

I have always had a lot of respect for Josh Barnett as a fighter and he has always came across well in the past. Hearing his comments about me shows that while he is a good fighter, he is like school on Sunday, he has no class. I am not sure if Barnett is overly sensitive, sexually frustrated or believes he had a perfect performance, whatever the case, I think the comments he made shows what kind of a background he comes from. He has made some unusual comments about the UFC and other fighters so I find it odd that he is so sensitive.

As a professional mma fighter myself, I have been subjected to a lot of criticism. I think all of my performances are terrible after a few weeks after my fights. I know I need improvement which is why I train so hard. To resort to insults and name calling because someone thought I should have fought better is immature and pointless. We can always do better. We fight on TV and people will criticize. No mysteries here.

It is fighters like Josh Barnett who help support the perception that MMA fighters are ignorant and low class individuals. This is unfortunate since the MMA world needs guys who act like professional athletes if we want people to take this sport seriously. Barnett isn't a kid anymore and has been around the sport for a long time now, he should act like a pro. If we show a lack of respect, how can we want people to respect us?

Either way, thanks for watching MMA Live on ESPN.com. All of our past episodes are available on the MMA page at ESPN.com.

Shortly thereafter, Josh responded:

Now that I have your attention Kenny, and the rest of the internet it seems, I’ll lay it out for you without the attention grabbing obnoxiousness. I have done media work in MMA for years and know the difference between acting as a professional on camera and taking shots at someone. You obviously do not and did not have respect for me as a fighter when you decided to not simply be critical of my performance but talk of it with derision and disdain. Your clearly condescending attitude is where I took offense and when I have fellow fighters sending me messages saying, "Hey, did you see Kenny Florian talking down about you on ESPN?" it’s clear to me you’re being disrespectful.

Yeah I know all the crass comments were a bit much and "Sit-on-a-dong" in retrospect was in very poor taste. I regret that one. But for grabbing attention and putting more listeners in front of the PC for Shoman and Co. it did the trick. The offer still stands however if you, K-Flo, think you can teach me a two about throwing an armlock or two. Your attitude suggested you sat on a pretty high perch for someone so much my junior in this sport and you must think yourself a better fighter. I’d simply like to see you stand up for that attitude. I have been submitted plenty of times by Matt Hume who is around your weight and you’re a professional athlete so no need for anyone to whine about me picking on you Kenny.

Who are you to speak of class or more importantly my background? The only thing you need to know about my background is that no one ever let me act like an arrogant prick without smacking me one. My teachers are men who put up or shut up and take no shit from anybody. See when I started fighting I didn’t have the luxury of gyms everywhere, promotions all over the US, sponsors, or even MMA gear. We fought whoever, whenever pretty much regardless of weights, time limits or rules. What you see on Sherdog isn’t the extent of my fighting history. Ever fight bare knuckle, with headbutts or no time limit? No cutting and running in those matches buddy boy. No, I bet you didn’t. You got all the benefits of a modern MMA created by people like myself and I can tell you what it really means to suffer for a sport when we didn’t make dick. But we fought however we could and for free if we had to, just to fight.

You’re a kid in this game. A mewling babe sucking from a teet. You haven’t done the things I have or even have as many fights as I have wins. You need to realize that just because you fight in the UFC and are on an ESPN internet show, we are not peers. Not even close. Not as fighters, not in MMA knowledge, not in the business aspects, not in anything.

I must say that as a fighter your improvement has been impressive and I think you have come far from the finals of the first TUF. This however is not just about professionalism but about being a man. If you want to speak with contempt and flout be prepared to have own up to it –even if it means having to get physical. That’s the way it is.

Don’t talk shit if you don’t want shit.

Josh

UFC 99 appears to have its first bout, and it marks the return of an early UFC legend to the organization.

A source close to the negotiations today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that former UFC lightweight contender and recent DREAM fighter Caol Uno (27-11-4 MMA, 3-3-1 UFC) will take on UFC veteran Spencer Fisher (22-4 MMA, 7-3 UFC) at the June event.

Verbal agreements are in place, and the fight is expected to be finalized shortly, the source said.

UFC 99 takes place June 13 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany.

TMZ has learned the famously tatted MMA badboy was arrested by Tustin police Monday afternoon after they spotted the 6'3", 235 lb fighter wearing a Long Beach Police Dept. jumpsuit, complete with patches and a cloth badge -- a badge only cops are allowed to wear. The officers -- the real officers -- then searched Kimo's ride, where they claim to have found "a small amount of what is believed to be meth."

Lol...

I had a criminal justice type class taught by a Internal Affairs Lieutenant in Dallas.

He told us 99% of all drug cases, including ones by substance abusing police officers (remember he was IA) were because people took their drugs outside their home. I guess people get so sucked in by drugs it becomes so much a part of their lives that it becomes second nature to always have something with you.

Really cool stories from that guy...he was in Columbia for 2 years and helped take down Manual Noriega. He was the kind of teacher who did nothing but tell stories but when it came time for a test you somehow knew all the material. Imagine if more teachers were like that.

Source: Around the Octagon

www.aroundtheoctagon.com/

ATO has learned through a source within Strikeforce that Jake Shields will fight Joe Riggs on April 11. The show will be televised on Showtime headlined by Nick Diaz vs. Frank Shamrock.
Shields (21-4) is one of the fighters that Strikeforce acquired after ProElite folded. He has won 11 straight fights and defeated Yushin Okami and Carlos Condit on the same night at Rumble on the Rock 9 in 2006. His most recent fight was a victory over Paul Daley on EliteXC’s nationally televised show last October.

Riggs (29-10) is UFC veteran and holds victories over Nick Diaz, Chris Lytle, and Kendall Grove. He fought 4 times last year and went 2-2 . He is 6-4 in his last ten fights. In 2004 Riggs fought 9 times he lost the first fight then proceeded to win 8 straight fights

Since it is a slow day, here is some interesting MMA trivia for your amusement. Some of it you probably already know if you are a hardcore fan like myself, but there is also lot of interesting stuff you have probably never heard of. So sit back, relax, and enjoy.

UFC 1:
- Zane Frasier was invited because he beat up Frank Dux in the lobby at a Karate competition.

-Gerarld Gordeau was invited because he was from the same gym as Ernesto Hoost and the organizers couldn’t afford Hoost.

-Ken Shamrock was recruited after one of his students had applied, they decided they wanted the teacher instead.

-Big John McCarthy applied, but was told that Royce would be the only one to represent Jiu-Jitsu. He could enter after Royce was done with it.

-One of Teila Tuli’s teeth that Gordeau kicked out just missed John McCarthy’s wife when it flew into the crowd. She got up and left the event immediately.

-Art Jimmerson tried to back out when he found out the details of the event but they threatened to sue him because they had already started promoting him.

- The promoters considered adding an electric fence and an alligator-filled moat around the Octagon.

Other Events:
- At UFC 12, Tank Abbot got into a backstage fight with Wallid Ismail

- At UFC 28, Josh Barnett and Gan McGee had the first and only UFC Super HW fight.

- At UFC 36, Matt Hughes fought Shooto’s former MW (167 lb) Champ, Sakurai, because the current Champ had trouble getting a visa. The Champ was Anderson Silva.

- At UFC 39, Ricco Rodriguez stopped Randy Couture, making it the ONLY fight in UFC history to be stopped in the 5th round.

- At UFC 47, Mike Kyle bit Wes Sims on the chest during their fight.

- At Vale Tudo Japan ’97, Enson Inoue was DQ’d against F. Shamrock because his brother Egan ran into the ring.

- At PRIDE 9, Matt Serra’s opponent was injured by the pyrotechnics and the match was called off. Serra was never invited back.

- At PRIDE 22, during the stare down, Rampage gave Igor Vovchanchyn a note that from “his mother” that said “Please don’t hurt my son.”

- At PRIDE Critical Countdown Absolute, during the stare down when the ref finished the rules, Josh Barnett said to Mark Hunt “and no flying ass drops.”

- At PRIDE Final Conflict 2004, Big Nog was stuck in traffic, so ‘lil Nog did his walk in for the opening ceremony.

- PRIDE’s “Shockwave” is not translated correctly. The real name is “The Man Festival.”

- At Shooto 3/18, Hansen threw his mouth piece into the crowd to celebrate his victory…and hit Caol Uno’s mom in the head.

-At IFC 11, Rich Franklin vs. Aaron Brink was ruled a “no contest” when Brink got his leg stuck between the mat and the cage.

- At ADCC, Jeff Monson stripped bare naked (in front of everyone) in protest to the judge’s decision to DQ him. You can use a can opener for positioning, but not as a submission, his opponent (pe de Pano, I think) tapped when he did it so they ruled it a submission attempt and DQ’d him. He maintained he was positioning.

Gracies:
- The Gracie family first got noticed when Rorion did a 1989 Playboy article claiming to be the baddest man on the planet and issuing the “Gracie Challenge.”

- Royce was the Gracie chosen for UFC 1 for two reasons. They wanted someone smaller to prove a point, and Rickson and Rorion had a big falling out over Rickson teaching from his home instead of at the Academy.

- Rorion Gracie was the fight scene coordinator for Lethal Weapon 1 (triangle at the end)
- Due to his uncontrollable temper, Ryan was reportedly banned by the family from fighting until he got treatment and became more stable.

- Tito called out Renzo Gracie after becoming the >200 lb Champ.

- Rickson does have an official loss. At the 1993 US Sambo Championships he lost to Ron Tripp via uchi-mata in 45 seconds. Rickson claims he was misinformed of the rules.

- Although Rickson has long been considered the family Champ, Rickson says Royler actually has the best technique in the family and only beats him because of his size advantage.

- Rickson actually only has 2 wins by armbar (both Takada fights) “Rickson by Choke” would be more accurate.

Other Talents:
- Dan Severn is also writer for Penthouse

- Aaron Brink is a former porn star

- Jeff Monson worked as a family and children’s counselor

- Matt Serra is the first American that the Gracie family awarded a black belt to.

- Gary Goodridge is a world Champ in arm-wrestling and claims to beat 1,000 people in a row in Japan.

- Egan Inoue was a World Champion Racquetball player before competing in JJ and MMA.

-Pete Spratt led the NCAA in receiving yards one season while in college.

- Keith Jardine worked as a debt collector, bounty hunter, football coach and even a miner before fighting.

- Mirko Filipovic, besides being a member of the Croatian Anti-terrorism squad, also served in the Croatian Parliament and was signed by the Croatian football team Cibalia..

Movies/TV:
- Oleg Taktarov has been in more than 30 movies and TV shows

- Rich Franklin starred in “Cyborg Soldier” in the lead role.

- Forrest Griffin had a small part in an episode of “Law and Order: SVU.”

- Besides a couple films, Randy Couture had a recurring role on “The Unit.”

- Chuck Liddell was in “The Postman Always Rings Twice” starring Jack Nicholson when he was 12.

Education:
- Tank Abbott has a History degree.

- Jeff Monson has a Masters in Psych.

- Phil Baroni has a degree in Physch.

- Rich Franklin has BA in Math and a Masters in Education.

- Rorion Gracie has a law degree.

- Mark Coleman has a degree in Education.

- Chuck Liddell has a BA in Accounting.

Nicknames:
- Michael Bisping is the grandson of a Polish Count (shocker!).

- Jens Pulver is called ‘little evil” due to the abusive childhood he once called a “daily hell.” His alcoholic father regularly beat him and even put a gun in his mouth when he was 7. He pulled the gun out and told him he wasn’t worth the bullets.

- Rich Clementi took the nickname “No Love” after a messy divorce.

- Tim Sylvia’s original nickname was “Grizzly Bear.”

- Wanderlei Silva’s original nickname was “Mad Dog.”

- Ikuhisa Minowa is called “The Punk” because of his love of Punk Rock.

- Matt “The Law” Lindland got his name because in the finals of the 2000 United States Olympic trials, Lindland lost to Keith Sieracki, who Lindland had accused of tripping him. After appealing, an arbitrator ordered a rematch for Lindland and Sieracki, in which Lindland won 8-0. They still gave the slot to Sieracki, and Lindland sued the Olympic Committee.

- Rich “Ace” Franklin is a reference to Ace Ventura because he looks like Jim Carrey.

- Rampage’s 3 sons all have the middle name Rampage, his daughter’s middle name is Page.

Real Names:

Karapat Parisyan
Sebastiaan Rutten
Jacob Ortiz
Ken Wayne Kilpatrick (Ken Shamrock aka Vince Torrelli)
Frank Alisio Juarez III (Frank Shamrock)
Jay Dee Penn (All his older brothers are named Jay also, hence Baby Jay)
Francisco Santos Mir III

Random:
- The Zuffa by-laws state that if Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta cannot resolve a dispute, they will have a sport JJ match to decide.

- Dana White owns 10% of the UFC, not Zuffa.

- Zuffa paid $2 MIL for the UFC and invested another $41 MIL to keep it going.

-Jason Delucia put a “curse” on Bas Rutten after Bas beat him a 3rd time because Bas refused to give him another rematch.

- Diego Sanchez was once engaged to UFC ring girl Ali Sonoma; they are supposedly back together.

- Jeremy Horn has had 71 bone breaks and fractures.

- Wanderlei’s son is named Thor.

- Rampage has an albino son… and no, they don’t call him “Powder.”

- BJ Penn sued the UFC for stripping his WW title and filed a motion to prevent the UFC to awarding it to someone else after he left the organization. He lost the lawsuit.

- Forrest Griffin’s first MMA fight was against Dan Severn.

- Kieth Hackney was considered for TUF 4, even passed the medicals, but was passed over.

- Fedor has a pet turtle.

The UFC has finally given me what Ive been asking for all along. A true fight for Cain Velasquez!

MMAWeekly.com is reporting that heavyweights Heath Herring and Cain Velasquez have verbally agreed to fight at UFC 99. Herring has not fought since his unanimous decision loss to now UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, and has gone only 2-3 in the UFC. Velasquez is coming off of a second round TKO victory at UFC Fight Night 17, and boasts an undefeated MMA record of 5-0.

UFC 99 is scheduled to go down on June 13 in Cologne, Germany. The card now looks like this:

* Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva
* Spencer Fisher vs. Caol Uno
* Cain Velasquez vs. Heath Herring
* Mike Swick vs. TBA
* Marcus Davis vs. TBA
* Mirko Cro Cop vs. TBA (according to Mirko at least)

No one boos Jardine, exactly, but no one really cheers for him. Ask how he invites apathy, and no one will be able to articulate why.

He’s hardly a reluctant slugger: He’ll wade in and get dirty, as he did against Chuck Liddell. He’s not a braggart, not a reformed street thug with a mouth bigger than his ability. He holds wins over three of the biggest names in the 205-pound division: former champion Liddell, former champion Forrest Griffin and Brandon Vera.

So what’s the problem? Why accuse Jardine of contributing to an overpriced, underwhelming UFC 96? ($44.95, plus applicable sales taxes.)

Three possible answers:

1. He hears the final bell nearly 50 percent of the time. There are no spectacular finishes in the Jardine arsenal: If he’s going to win, it’s likely going to be because he sucks you into a war of attrition, taxing your conditioning and earning the victory by unraveling a few more feet of guts.

Put more succinctly: He don’t win pretty.

2. He’s been broken before. If Jardine’s roughhouse style remained unsolved, there would be some mystery -- as in the case of Lyoto Machida -- as to whether this fight will be the one in which he’s figured out.

"Rampage" Jackson will be the biggest test of Keith Jardine's career.Instead, he’s suffered abrupt batterings that have made him look like Peter McNeely to his opponent’s Tyson. Houston Alexander made him forget the entirety of third grade; Wanderlei Silva used his head for batting practice. There’s no aura surrounding his methodology. He’s talented but not immune to a primitive bee-swarm of an attack.

3. He’s kind of a bore. Not necessarily athletically, but in general. In a sport full of big archetypes, he looks the part of a Hell’s Angel on parole: nasty, frightening, prone to clubbing people with a plumber’s wrench.

But that’s about where the color ends. His attitude isn’t particularly intimidating. (Seems like a pretty pleasant guy, actually.) He doesn’t say anything to make the audience love him or hate him. As a result, there’s not much emotional investment in the outcome. If he beats Jackson, hey, he’s delivered the upset special on a platter before. If he doesn’t, it’s just the latest in a line of losses that didn’t shake anyone’s ground.

Bizarrely, it’s this kind of collective public coma that makes me want to root for the guy. Jardine puts in his hours at Greg Jackson’s gym in Albuquerque, sweats and bleeds in just as much volume as anyone in the sport and enjoys few of the fringe benefits. I’ve yet to see him endorse a corporate giant (Rashad Evans and Microsoft), bag the ring card girl (do your own research) or throw an after-party (everyone else).

Maybe his lack of a niche is his niche: the blue-collar guy who doesn’t feel the need to invent a persona or take big risks in order to rally a following. He goes to the gym and does his job: no fanfare, no fireworks, little attention. That’s 95 percent of the working population.

I doubt much would change if he goes on to beat Jackson Saturday. It puts him on the fast track to nowhere, as he and Evans have already declared they would never fight each other. Jardine could go on to defeat the majority of the UFC’s light heavyweights and probably never be a substantial ticket draw.

Is it too bad? That depends on Jardine. We’re too quick to assume that everyone in the sport clamors for the accompanying attention and ego inflation. In some cases, athletes enjoy the competition -- and the relative anonymity of flying under the radar.

One advantage to being the invisible man: no one sees you coming.

BloodyElbow.com is reporting that Bobby Lashley will square of against fellow former professional wrestler Ken Shamrock at Roy Jones Jr.'s mixed boxing and MMA event "March Badness." The 45-year-old Shamrock is coming off of his first win in five years, which saw him armbar Ross Clifton on February 13. Lashley won his first MMA bout in December in just 41 seconds, and has not fought since then.

March Badness is scheduled for March 21 at the Pensacola Civic Center in Pensacola, Florida. The card will be broadcast live on pay-per-view. The main event is a boxing bout featuring Roy Jones Jr. as he takes on Omar Sheika in a light-heavyweight bout. Other MMA fighters expected for the card are Seth Petruzelli, Doug Marshall, and a heavyweight fight between Jeff Monson and Roy Nelson.

Sidelnikov Suspended for Steroid Use
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
by Sherdog.com Staff

The man touted as “Baby Fedor,” Kirill Sidelnikov has been suspended one year for testing positive for the steroid Stanozolol, said the California State Athletic Commission on Tuesday.

Sidelnikov (5-3), a Red Devil teammate to the world’s top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, lost a slugfest in his U.S. debut against Paul Buentello at Affliction “Day of Reckoning” on Jan. 24 in Anaheim, Calif. The 20-year-old Russian went blow-for-blow early with the more experienced Buentello (27-10), but was floored by a barrage of strikes in the final period, prompting referee John McCarthy to call in a ringside physician to check on the battered fighter. The bout was promptly called off.

Also used in horse racing, Stanozolol promotes muscle growth and strength increases, usually without excessive weight gain.

If the suspension remains uncontested, Sidelnikov will be eligible to re-apply for licensure in California after Jan. 18, 2010 and will pay a $2,500 fine.

Representatives for Sidelnikov were not immediately available for comment.

Sidelnikov Camp Claims Nose Spray Tainted with Steroids

M-1 Global released a statement on Wednesday regarding Kiril Sidelnikov's positive test for Stanozolol on the heels of his losing effort against Paul Buentello at Affliction's "Day of Reckoning."

Representatives from M-1 explained that Sidelnikov had trained outside the M-1 family (Russian Imperial Team) and got himself into trouble there.

"Kirill indicated that during that time away he began to experience complications from a broken nose that he had recently sustained," said the release. "Not wanting to miss any training time leading up to Day of Reckoning,' Kirill followed the advice of a coach not affiliated with M-1 who gave him a nose spray commonly used in Russia to help treat some of his symptoms. It is M-1's belief that the nose spray is what contained the Stanozol.

"For those that are skeptical of this explanation, we believe Kirill's account is true based in large part to his physique. If he had been using large amounts of Stanozol on a regular basis, we believe that the frame of his upper body would have contained leaner muscle that had more definition.

"While we do not believe the use of a nose spray provided Kirill with an unfair competitive advantage, we are obviously very disappointed in his lapse of judgment. Even though it was only a common nose spray that he used to treat an injury, an athlete must take full responsibility for what he puts into his system at all times. While we are not citing youth as an excuse, we feel we need to offer the public an explanation and we attribute the mistake in part to the fact that Kirill is just 20-years of age.

"In spite of our disappointment, Kirill remains a part of the M-1 family and as such, he can continue to count on our support through this turbulent period. While we do not endorse his actions, we stand by him.

"M-1 takes full responsibility for Kirill's actions and we respect the decision of the California State Athletic Commission. The organization would also like to make it clear that we do not condone the use of performance enhancing drugs of any kind and we'd like to hereby apologize to the MMA community for Kirill's indiscretion."

So, there you have it: the smoking nose.

Well, there it is. The kid's too fat to be on steroids, so it must be the spray :lol

According to MMAJunkie.com, Diego Sanchez and Clay Guida have verbally agreed to fight at the Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale.

Diego Sanchez was recently victorious in the main event of UFC 95 over Joe Stevenson, while Clay Guida, is coming off of victories over former Ultimate Fighter winners Mac Danzig and Nate Diaz. One would have to think that the winner of this fight would be very close to a Lightweight Title shot.

Anthony Johnson and John Howard have also verbally agreed to fight on the card.

White Confirms Nogueira Had Staff Before UFC 92 Fight

There's no easy way to say it: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira got his ass kicked by Frank Mir.

The 32-year-old Brazilian did not look like the fighter that, save for one Russian, lorded over one of the best collections of heavyweight talent in history at Pride Fighting Championships, nor the man who came from behind to win the UFC interim heavyweight championship last year. He looked sluggish, out of step, and sadly, old.

But there was a reason for it, says UFC president Dana White.

White maintains the former champ was suffering from a serious case of staph infection going into the Dec. 27 bout.

"I think Nog had staph real bad like six days before that fight," White told reporters on Thursday.

Though he didn't have blood tests to prove his theory, his eyes gave him all the evidence he needed.

"He had these things all over his body," continued White. "I can't explain what they looked like."

Since the fight, Nogueira has remained silent on the circumstances leading up to the fight. Last month, he underwent knee surgery to repair an injury that also hampered his preparation for Mir, according to trainers.

Big mma news day. Also taken from fiveouncesofpain:

Aleksander Emelianenko and the Red Devil fight team part ways
March 6, 2009 by Bryan Levick

According to published reports, Aleksander Emelianenko and the Red Devil fight team in St. Petersburg, Russia have parted ways. The separate appears to be mutual, as both the team website and Emelianenko’s own personal website indicated that there are no hard feelings towards either side.

Emelianenko commented on his site that he was looking forward to the next chapter in his life and that he would defend his name and prove that he was the best. He also added that his first priority was to defend the honor of Russia in international tournaments.

An official statement by M-1 Global has yet to be issued and while Emelianenko’s separation from Red Devil has been confirmed, it is unclear if he is still contractual aligned with M-1.

There was no specific reason given by either site to why he was leaving. However, rumors have persisted that he had been at odds with some of his Red Devil teammates for some time now.

Emelianenko also had been scheduled to fight last July during the inaugural Affliction card but was scratched at the last minute for reasons that still have yet to have been disclosed. Some sources have speculated that he tested positive for Hepatitis B but those reports have never been confirmed.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz was in Columbus, Ohio this weekend during UFC 96. One can assume that he may be referring to a possible fight on Affliction's next event, which was also rumored to take place in August...

I heard about that, but thought it was a rumor. Is it official?

Well...nothing was ever made public but supposedly Dream won't touch him now and that guy from the CSAC says he won't ever be allowed to fight in the US again so I guess so.

Aleks is a borderline elite fighter...shame really..

Fightlinker is wringing his hands over the lack of outrage that a presumably Hepatitis infected Aleksander Emelianenko is still fighting and no one in the MMA media is complaining:

You know the dude’s got a serious issue when even Japan says “You’re not allowed to fight.” So why is a guy who’s basically the Tommy Morrison of MMA getting a free pass from the MMA media? Is it because he’s Fedor’s little brother? Or do we just care so little about the safety of his opponents?

There’s all sorts of signs pointing towards Aleks having hepatitis. If he’s still FIGHTING, that’s a health risk to everyone he fights. You’d think there should be some responsible journalistic outlet raising some questions about the whole situation instead of licking it’s chops in eager anticipation of Aleks’ next fight. Hey, I used to be down with the A to the E too, but this is fucking nuts. The guy might have a life threatening disease and he’s fighting in MMA

From mmajunkie:

While not yet officially announced by the organization, the live finale for "The Ultimate Fighter 9" has added a lightweight showdown between former "TUF" champions Nate Diaz (10-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) and Joe Stevenson (29-10 MMA, 6-4 UFC).

MMAMadness first reported the that the pair had verbally agreed to the contest, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has since learned from sources close to the bout that contracts for the fight have been signed.

The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale is scheduled for June 20 at the Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Stevenson has endured a tough 1-3 stretch while facing some of the lightweight division's top talent. The winner of "The Ultimate Fighter 2," Stevenson was submitted by current UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn in January 2008 and again by current no. 1 contender Kenny Florian in November 2008.

Stevenson last fought in a unanimous decision loss to Diego Sanchez in the "TUF 1" champion's first bout at 155 pounds.

Diaz will also be looking to bounce back from a loss. The "TUF 5" winner dropped a split decision to Clay Guida at UFC 94 in January. Prior to the defeat, Diaz had won five straight bouts for the organization, including four by submission.

With the addition to the card, the TUF 9 Finale now includes:

Lightweight finalist No. 1 vs. No. 2
Welterweight finalist No. 1 vs. No. 2
Clay Guida vs. Diego Sanchez
Nate Diaz vs. Joe Stevenson
John Howard vs. Anthony Johnson

Mask (Tapout) killed?

It appears he may have died in this car accident. Sources on the UG say they've confirmed Mask's death here and here. More to come.

From the LA Times:

A bizarre car crash in Newport Beach involving two luxury cars early this morning left one person dead, a second injured, a third arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter and a fourth person was detained by police long enough to sober up.

A Newport Beach Police Department officer allegedly witnessed the wreck and saw a red Ferrari and a white Porsche "spinning out of control" on Jamboree Road between Bison Avenue and East Bluff Drive at 12:57 a.m., Newport Beach Lt. Craig Fox said. The Ferrari "hit the curb and then collided with a pole." The Porsche came to a stop at the scene for a few seconds and then sped away, Fox said.

"It was terrible. It was extensive damage to the vehicle," Fox said, adding that the Ferrari appeared to have split in half.

An unidentified man in the Ferrari was pronounced dead. A woman in the car was ejected during the accident and taken to a hospital, where she was in stable condition, Fox said. He said police have not yet determined which one was driving and which one was the passenger.

UPDATE: Tracy Lee of CombatLifestyle.com is saying Dan, also known as "Punkass", sent her a text message that confirms Mask did, in fact, pass away as a result of this car accident.

the best story in all of mma...

http://www.africanassassin.com/images/soko1.jpg

The story of my life begins in Hom'la - Cameroon when I was born in the year 1984. At the age of five, I got involved in Judo through watching TV and a bunch of guys with some white clothes throwing each other. At the time I had no clue what it was, I just started playing around with my friends on the play ground until my brother's friend (Tchapkui Fred) introduced me to Judo.

I fell in love with the sport the first time I got in the gym. I had so much fun. After a few practices I set my goal to get my Black belt. My first match was one of the toughest matches I had ever been in. After that, I decided to better myself and train harder than ever. At the age of 13, I jumped in the adult training session. I was the skinniest, smallest one on the mat. The first thing I got from it was a sprained ankle that kept me stuck home for more than 8 weeks forcing my father to take my Judogi away from me, because I was just thinking about going back to Judo despites the cast on my ankle. As crazy as it sounds, I had to steal my Judogi to go to Judo and hide it at my friend's (Gomez) house afterward. It went on and on until my dad realized what was going on and finally allowed me to attend practices again.

During a Saturday morning session, I saw my Judo sensei being thrown all over the place by Olympic Gold winner Marc Alexandre who was leading a French team to come and compete in The "Tournoi International de la Ville de Youande." I decided I was going to be as good as him. Especially after receiving an authographed picture of the champ. I kept it and told myself, one day I will be an Olympic gold medalist as well and will have my own authographed pictures.

I had a chance to go to the All African Games and two African Championships. I got my butt kicked so bad that I spent some time wondering how that was possible. I thought I was training hard enough.

In my quest for better training for the Olympics, I made the move to the US where Judo America gave me a chance to train and compete as much as possible. During my training in San Diego, CA, I won a few tournaments such as the US OPEN, California State Championships, and the San Jose Buddhist Tournament. I also had a chance to have a match with Olympic class athlete "Shinohara" in 2003 that I won by Yoko after a shy O soto Gari. That motivated me even more. I started training harder and harder.

Unfortunately for me, I didn't have a chance to go back home and attend the Olympic trials due to my visa situation in the States and my finances. I was a student, wasn't working that much (20 hrs a week) and I really couldn't afford the trip. I was so bummed that I threw my gis under my bed because seeing them would remind me of my dream that never came true.

I decided at that point to just focus on my school and work and pay off my multiple debts... nothing else. One night at work, my boss - Lou Demas who was a Greco Wrestler back in the old days, asked me to come out in Temecula to help MMA icon Dan Henderson prepare for a fight against a Judo guy (Nakamura). I wasn't really excited about it because I did not have a good knowledge of MMA. After a few weeks of him trying to convince me into it, and after a bunch of trash talking I decided to get my gi out from under my bed and put it one more time... Just to shut my boss up.

I got to Temecula and did what I knew best... threw people around. After my first night of training with Team Quest, I was so exhausted, excited and curious to learn some boxing and kick boxing so I could do crazy stuff like Jean Claude Van Damme. I always wanted to learn some boxing, but my mom has always been against it. She would tell me: "If you ever start fighting, I will beat you up myself...Boxing isn't for nice people" Scary huh?

But I was in San Diego and she was back in the Jungle so I started training with Team Quest occasionnally. After Dan's fight, I was asked again to help rulon Gardner get ready for his first MMA fight against Yoshida. That's where I really fell in love with MMA. Getting my butt kicked by Rulon made me realize that I really needed to work on my striking. I started learning Muay Thai, got beat down by a girl on my first night. I think she finished me with two leg kicks. I couldn't believe it. I was at least 40 Lbs heavier and way stronger. I didn't expect that kind of thing to happen to me. That gave me a better clue on where I was as far as my striking.

In the gym, I hooked up with my good friend Ricky Guro and we started some insane training. A few months later, I had my first Thai fight. I never knew three rounds of three minutes in the ring could feel like an eternity. Somehow, I won that fight, gassed and super exhausted.

A week later I had my first sanctioned fight that I won by TKO (leg kick). Thereafter, I started my MMA training with Team Quest and after a some practices, I finally had my first MMA fight in San Diego. It was such a fun experience. I had a tough fight against a tough fighter but I came up victorious.

My second fight was a little North, in the State of orgegon - Portland. I got rid of my opponent in the first round with a left kick to the neck... Sweeet!!!

I know I'm still new to this and I have battles waiting ahead of me... I just can't wait to have a fight where I can't even move a finger the next day...

But please don't tell my mom I'm fighting, I will be in BIIIIG Trouble...

The Rameau Sokoudjou story will be continued.

I think we should all be able to have one last post... ranting on anything mma realted we want. make it your best post fellas...:(

this is a sad day in the mma world.
Oooh, that's tempting...

Eh, nah. The one that thing comes to mind is only slightly mma related and completely inappropriate for anybody under 21 who might venture in here.

I would like to thank you fellas, though. Being a lady in a man's arena still makes me a pariah in most social circles. So far, none of you have truly treated me like a freak. Even Dio treats me just as crappily as he does the rest of you. Which of course makes me want to kick his ass all the more.

Honestly .....desflood you have more well though out original thinking about MMA than most people I know regardless of gender.

I doubt many besides the regulars of ST know you're a gal.

EDIT 1: And thats my last post here on this thread. I think its badass to post on a forum where a gal trumps most men in well thought out mma thinking. go to sherdog or an other mma blog and prove to me that those jackasses have it together more than desflood.

deslood = roxy (and some of you know who roxy is right?)

EDIT 2: Leonard put down that fooking cheese sammich so we can lock this shiat.

Well...maybe it could be a combo off-topic/small mma news that doesn't deserve its own thread type thingy...

lets see what everyone says......we'll do what everyone wants. As long as we don't lose interesting topics in here
