the Mavericks are such a joke of a franchise.

Unless there's a major move on the horizon for some player we haven't mentioned yet, it may be another wasted season. Not to say that I've given up on the team. It appears that management loves the smell of their own shit too much to pull the trigger on anything that may upset the delicate balance that is this Mavericks roster.

I almost feel badly for the players that buy into the shit preached to them from on high.

Then I remember that they're millionaires and it doesn't hurt so much.

Oh and Josh Smith better be on this fucking team when training camp comes around or else Donnie Nelson should without a shadow of a doubt, be fired and then have the shit beat outta his fat ass

It won't be Josh Smith. That's too obvious and the word is already out. They like to 2nd guess themselves and will be at the other end of a lopsided trade for a piece of shit.

Not sure why everyone is salivating over Josh Smith. We would have to trade Howard to get him. You're overrating Smith and underrating Howard if you think that is a huge talent upgrade although it's obvious Smith is the better player. a HUGE talent upgrade is what the Lakers gave up for Gasol and the bag of potato chips the Rockets gave up for Artest. Howard for Smith is incomparable to those two examples. People complain about the lack of shooting guard or low post scoring and smith fills neither, although watching that freakish of an athlete with Kidd would be marvelous, I doubt it's a part of the championship puzzle. I would rather keep Howard and acquire a guy like Jason Richardson than swap Howard for Smith.

It would be good for the future as well though since Smith is 6 years younger, but I'm still thinking about winning now, not the future!

That's why the Mavs should re-acquire Loren Meyer, Doug Smith, George McCloud and even Tim Legler....to use them in a trade.

Hell, why jump at the best offer? As the NBA has proven recently, it's completely possible to pawn off your shit for an All-Star. I'm waiting patiently for that Eddie Jones/James Singleton trade for Lebron to go down. Should be any day now.

I'm all for getting Jason Richardson. His athleticism, shooting, and just overall explosive scoring ability will be nice to have, as well as the size for the 2 spot. I wonder if we could trade garbage for him as well...

The Mavericks aren't going to get shit else besides D-League scrubs. They love their team and we're going to see this same suck ass crew next season.

Anyways, their front office has more important things at hand. Donnie has to coach the Chinese National Team. Cuban has to buy the Cubs. How could they possibly find the time to run the Mavericks this offseason with more important things like that on their plate?

Oooooh...sorry, too late. Just traded to the Hornets for the retired rights to Grandmama. Charlotte also sent $15 million to New Orleans, just because.

Donnie said Mavs weren't interested in quality players for pennies or free cash in return.

Here's our likely roster/depth chart if we go to war with what we have and don't make another move. Drink it in, see if this goes down smooth:

Center: Dampier/Diop
Power Forward: Dirk/Bass
Small Forward: Josh/Singleton
Shooting Guard: Stack/Terry/Wright/Green/Foster
Point Guard: Kidd/Terry/Barea

That's not...terrible

I guess I would distribute the minutes this way in the regular season:

Center: Dampier 20, Diop 20, Dirk 8
Power Forward: Dirk 26, Bass 22
Small Forward: Josh 32, Singleton 8, Wright 8
Shooting Guard: Stack 12, Terry 12, Wright 8, Foster 8, Green 8 (hopefully one of these bags of suck would emerge over the other bags of suck and claim the starting job)
Point Guard: Kidd 32, Terry 16

Dirk: 34 mpg
Josh, Kidd: 32 mpg
Terry: 28 mpg
Bass: 22 mpg
Damp, Diop: 20 mpg
Wright: 16 mpg
Stack: 12 mpg
Foster, Green, Singleton: 8 mpg

What we've had the last few years has been pretty good. I don't know how to feel about the upcoming season. Part of me thinks the Mavs will be a little better than what they showed under Avery and the West won't be quite as tough as last season. I think we'll see a more normal distribution of wins instead of it being top-heavy like it was last year.

I think Denver and GS took a step back for sure, with only Portland there to pick up the slack. I don't think the Clippers can be counted on to make the playoffs with Camby and Davis' injury histories. I think Dallas is just as good as Phoenix and Portland at the very least, and should be able to grab one of the 6-8 seeds for sure. Vaulting into the top four depends on picking up an impact player ala the Lakers w/ Gasol and the Rox w/ Artest. Dallas is one impact player away right now.

The Bulls have discovered some interest in guard Larry Hughes with the obvious caveat of exchanging troublesome contract for troublesome contract. Since the Bulls need to thin out their backcourt, some possibilities could include Portland's Joe Przybilla, New York's Jared Jeffries, Dallas' Erick Dampier, or Denver's Kenyon Martin.

First To Worst: Where's Dallas Headed?

By: Bill Ingram Last Updated: 7/30/08 12:23 AM ET | 1566 times read

It's amazing what a difference a trade can make. A trade can take a team from being an also-ran to the NBA Finals, like it did for the Boston Celtics and LA Lakers. It can take a team from the lottery to potential playoff berth, as the draft-day trade that landed Jerryd Bayless will likely do for the Portland TrailBlazers. It can also take a team from being a perennial championship hopeful to being on the bubble in terms of making the playoffs at all.

The last category is where the Dallas Mavericks now find themselves.

Before the team traded Devin Harris and Gana Diop to the New Jersey Nets in a package deal that returned Jason Kidd to a Mavericks uniform, Dallas had the best record in the NBA against the Western Conference. They were two years removed from a Finals performance and one year removed from one of the best regular season records in the history of the league.

The Kidd trade brought all of that to a screeching halt.

The Mavericks limped through the rest of the 2007-08 season, losing to every playoff team that crossed their path save one. The New Orleans Hornets made quick work of their first round series against Dallas, yielding only one game in their best-of-seven series as Chris Paul worked over the aging Kidd. Out with the old, in with the new seemed to be the theme of the Mavs' postseason. Avery Johnson was immediately relieved of his coaching duties and Rick Carlisle was put in his place.

Everything's OK now, right?

You would think so from the way the Mavericks have approached the offseason. To date they've made no trades, and spent their entire mid-level exception on Gana Diop. Granted, they needed a back-up center and loved what Diop brought to the table on the defensive end during his tenure as a Maverick . . .but that's a lot of money to spend on a guy who can't score when you really needed a true two to start alongside Kidd.

So far. . .nothing. Mavs GM Donnie Nelson tells us he'll fill the final two roster spots with young players from the summer league squad and call it good.

Is Rick Carlisle really that good? Is he so good that you can basically send the same squad out there that finished the season praying for other teams to lose so they could make the playoffs and expect a different result?

On paper, this team looks pretty good. Dirk Nowitzki, Josh Howard, Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Erick Dampier . . .that's not a bad starting five. Of course, when you see the name Jason Kidd you are thinking of the player he was a couple of years ago. He's not that player any more. Kidd's age and Jet's size make that backcourt suspect on the defensive end. Everyone knows defense is not Nowitzki's strength, though he was passable under Avery Johnson's watchful eye. Howard was an excellent defender before his game took the second half of last season off. Dampier . . .well . . .Damp is probably the most overpaid player in the NBA.

So how exactly will the Mavericks be competitive next season?

Apparently they're hoping for a miracle.

Frankly, the Mavericks are holding onto the playoff berth most likely to be claimed by the Portland TrailBlazers.

The lack of a contract extension was a big reason why Jason Kidd wanted to leave New Jersey, but rumor has it that there is no talk of him getting one in Dallas either, according to The Star-Ledger.

"It's just business," Kidd said of New Jersey. "We had a great run. Sometimes, with moves, business gets in the way. The sad thing is, nobody there is left from when we started the whole thing. I guess you could say they're starting over."

What an offseason...can you say :lobt2:

Sign Barea 3yr - $5mil:bang
Sign George 2yr - $4mil (player option for 2nd year-reacquires Bird rights):bang
Sign Green - minimum
Sign Singleton - minimum (non-guarnteed)
Sign Diop - Full MLE:bang
Sign McCleod - minimum (non-guarnteed)

I thought Carlisle said this team needs shooters, if he thinks George is a shooter, he is sadly mistaken and no one else on that list is anything close to a shooter

My only theory for the Mavs' inactivity is that Cuban already took quite the tax hit bringing in Kidd, and there are a number of players the Mavs would love to have but are not available right now because at this point of the offseason, after the bulk of the player movement is over, there's about 25 teams penciling themselves in for 50 wins and a trip to the playoffs.

Of course some teams are not going to reach their goals and will look to shed salary in February. I bet in Cuban's mind, it's up to the players on the roster right now that will determine if the Mavs are buyers or sellers in February. There won't be any dicking around and "Oh, we're just working on some things and experimenting with different lineups, we'll be ready when it counts," like last year. These guys have no choice but to go all out in November and December. That's what the Celtics did last year, and it set the tone for the entire season. I'm not comparing the Mavs to the Celtics, but it would behoove them to not twiddle their dicks like they did last year.

1) They're waiting for LeBron, Wade, Kobe in 2010
2) There's a Chinese Player that's better than Jordan that they'll sneak in at the last minute
3) They're waiting for Mark Cuban's next show to fill out their Roster "Who wants to be an NBA player"
