    I think a little less than $2B of it was spent from it after Hurricane Harvey. Most of the time it's used as a fig leaf to cover up the lege's failures to fund the state's obligations.
    Most of the fund was built up by withholding funding for public schools so Abbott could force through his school voucher bull tbh.

    The damage from this flooding is horrible and tragic. Putting aside the horror of losing loved ones, just having your house flooded and your possessions ruined is a huge emotional toll. Instead of pointing fingers at the people you think should "do something about it", just donate and do your part. Soon volunteers will be able to go to Kerrville and help people remove sheet rock and clean up debris. Rather than waiting for the government or the Spurs to do it, show up and do it yourself. That is much more productive than bickering on Spurs talk. I would much rather read the 1,000,000th trade Vassell and Keldon post. If you want to volunteer your time, here is the the City's facebook page where they will let volunteers know when it is safe to go and start helping. https://www.facebook.com/KerrvilleTX.
    What the do we even pay taxes for if there is no FEMA and food stamps and Medicaid are getting gutted? So we can subsidize Elon and go bomb brown people?

    I can see and understand the logic behind organizations like the Spurs, etc., needing to communicate to the public about donations made, as Chinook, FkLA, and others have mentioned. Good on the Spurs, Mavs, Rockets and others for donating generously as they have.

    I'm sure the very red part of a red state will get all the money it needs, if this area had voted blue the Dump admin would probably drag their feet like they did in California.

    I live not far from this horrific devastation. My wife and I will keep our distance as the rescue teams continue to work. Of course it's insane to think deep cuts to the staff at the National Weather Service and the defunding of FEMA haven't impacted this tragedy. Anyone saying this is not the time to 'say this' is partly the cause for this horrific situation. Now is not the time to be silent. Donald Trump is a curse on the human race and his new Billionaire Bill will kill many Americans. His legacy is killing hundreds of thousands with cuts to USAID. Cuts to SNAP, Meals on Wheels, Medicaid, on top of NWS is depraved and sick.

    Well said. Right-wingers are blaming the camp. Question, if they had inadequate alarms then why couldn't the police and emergency services go tell them? Were they also in the dark? No one was alerted because there was no staff working. They had been fired.

    • Blatten, Switzerland, mudslide, 90% of village destroyed. The emergency services had predicted the collapse, no casualties. May 2025
    • Valencia, Spain, flood and flooding. 232 dead. October 2024
    • Africa: more than a thousand deaths from climate catastrophe in 2024 (according to the UN).
    • Asia, thousands of deaths following monsoons in 2020.

    These catastrophic episodes will only become more pronounced with global warming and rising ocean levels. We know that, and some (most countries in the world) are choosing to dismantle government and intergovernmental agencies responsible for preventing and helping disaster victims. The vast majority of the population lives in at-risk areas, particularly next to rivers or oceans.

    Political leaders (especially in America and specifically in Texas) therefore praise every man for himself. Then, when a catastrophe occurs (necessarily divine), it is in the individualist culture (so consistent with the American way of life), we release money which we describe as “charitable donations”. In Roman times too, wealthy citizens engaged in politics and patronage. It was not a democratic model. Trump's America today is a model, but a model of autocracy. Europe takes a lot of inspiration from it. The most skillful in this area is Macron who, with his air of a respectable man, uses strictly the same anti-democratic policy as Trump.

    Today more than yesterday, however, we will need agencies to help the victims of our past excesses.

    In this context, we must be able to propose a new model in the face of the fascist and individualist model now in the majority. A few months ago, I pleaded for the creation of an international agency: The Red Helmets. All over the world, we are dismantling national resources and agencies, where on the contrary, we should have joined forces. These organizations, when they still exist, are not specific and cannot intervene in disasters without calling on other organizations. Each country has its own way of doing things. Developing countries often do not have the means to deploy sufficient forces and resources in the areas for which they are responsible. When international aid is put in place, it is often too late and chaotic.

    The Red Helmets would be deployed to camps all over the planet equally. First aid could be delivered from camps closest to a disaster. Above all, they would be able to serve as a hub for the delivery of international aid and as a logistics center. Apart from disaster management, specialists would be in charge of assessing the risks in the surrounding areas and would inform the authorities and populations (meteorologists, architects, urbanists, hydrologists, seismologists, etc.).

    This intergovernmental organization would function like insurance. Or at least, how insurance should work. Insurance companies today are capitalist companies whose interest is to serve citizens as little as possible. Insurance, whether for housing, health, job, divorce, death, weather or criminal risks, should be compulsory. But they should also be managed by and for the people. In the time of the new oligarchies, they capture capital, for capital, through the capital of citizens. Before throwing away crumbs to advertise their magnanimity through one-off donations which will always be lower than “contributions” (the rich will talk about “taxes”, even Agent Orange likes to talk about “tariffs” without understanding who will pay).

    Faced with this fascist and individualist model, it is therefore this model of mutual aid that must be put in place. The natural elements will not stop being unleashed. So we have to adapt. A large part of the planet's wealth must be used to slow down the effects of global warming, adapt, but also put in place solutions to help victims or displaced people (which implies a change in mentality regarding the reception of refugees).

    We must not let a fascistic narrative be dictated to us. The rich own the power of the press. Citizens must come together to propose a contrary vision and an inclusive, egalitarian and humanist narrative. Death the patrons, long live the contributors.

    Disasters will only get worse. The rich benefit from the misfortune of the most vulnerable. Disasters serve their profits. It is these profits that must dry up to cushion the effects of their indifference.

    It is not up to the Spurs to respond to a catastrophe that is far beyond their control. Demand the return of funding from dismantled government agencies.

    Everyone should be required to donate to these relief efforts. They should make it so that it's based on a % of your pay and withhold a little each check. Or maybe it's a % of the value of your home, and you include it each month with your mortgage. And then there is just this giant fund collecting all of these relief funds in advance. Maybe some kind of centralized body could be charged with caring for these funds and then dispersing them as needed when disaster strikes, since coordination would be more helpful than people just donating to a bunch of various organizations which may not may not be all that effective.

    I might write my congressman about this idea.
    Donation = Good

    Taxation = Bad

    FEMA's work at this stage of the disaster is mostly coordinating efforts behind the scenes for the first responders. FEMA only becomes directly involved by giving money to affected residents/communities after the fact.

    That being said Trump's enabling of DOGE to illegally cut funds for the NWS is a colossal up that needs to be called out. As is the county only sending an emergency alert through Facebook.

    of course the same kunts that go along with
    "news caused the l.a. fires because he didn't rake the forests!"

    are the same kunts clutching their pearls after trump/musk defunded and dismantled the national weather service, NOAA, researchers and scientists, cancer researchers, fired intel professionals and stopped the fbi from their cyber programs to investigate russia's cyber ery, installed a loon who promptly caused a resurgence into once-dead measles- and more -

    these kunts want to defend trump when he directly killed those kids and directly killed a million people with his criminal negligence of covid

    7-Eleven is giving 20 cents off per gallon of gas through their app for central Texas customers. I'd check and see if Speedway and Stripes are doing something similar since it's all the same company. With all their stacked discounts and card cashback I paid like $2.01 per gallon this time around.

    Thanks Japan! I have a loose fence board. We will rebuild.

    It is an OK discount for those who need it. If you don't, buy something in the store to even out the cost for them.

    Are you personally going to stop FEMA from spending your tax dollars to help people?

    I encourage your doing so. Get to it. Use your gun to get your money back from them.
