It's been four months and I still have my iPhone 3G that was replaced at the Apple Store back in December. I am sorry to say that there is no improvement. My phone is always hot to the touch. I have turned off and reset and tried everything you can find on the Internet to resolve performance issues. My phone locks up runing the phone app, iPod, calendar and crashes out of Twitter, Facebook, Photos, Reddit, Google, Pandora repeatedly. I can not downgrade to 3.1 because it fails every time I try. It will never sync with my computer/iTunes without a reboot first.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to upgrade to an iPhone 4 now but my contract ends in August. Forget this I am going to use my Droid phone from now on.

    Thanks Apple. for nothing.....

A last ditch effort to visit the Apple Store last Friday with my issues ended up in the same cyclic conversation I've been a part of at least 6 times which always starts off with "Did you try restoring your phone?" Yes "Did you try resetting all settings?" Yes "After the restore did you replace items manually or restore from your backup?" Yes and No I did it both ways per your instructions.

I have done EVERYTHING these Genius Bar people have told me to do. I actually helped 2 other iPhone users with their issues while waiting in line which in turn save them from having to spend time on their visit and moved me up in the queue. I know this stuff because I do it all day long for other people. I spent all afternoon Friday after my visit restoring 2 Samsung Captivate phones from their bricked state for one of my clients. At no point did I have to call Samsung/AT&T or walk into a Genius bar to get interrogated and judged to the effect of "How dare you have problems on our perfect yet closed platform!!" It was a fairly straightforward process.

Apple has screwed up with us 3G users and basically only cares about new customers. The AT&T virus has invaded Curpertino

Amen to that. I agree completely. My 3G is so sluggish I want to throw it in the trash and just start over. I refuse to go to iPhone4 (waiting for either iPhone 5 or a better Android phone). I've done complete restores and it is still as slow as molasses. Apple is turning off it's customer base. I'm now considering other platforms. Such a shame it has to be that way. A bloated organization (Apple) offers a bloated operating system for the users of its older technology.

There probably should BUT I believe they were gambling that people would get a new phone. I'm also sure they thought the good would outweigh the bad as well.

, you probably have other internal issues going on as well. That's almost a 3 year old phone. I feel mine showing it's age but it's all wear and tear. Also, I won't upgrade to iOS5 to speed up that process.

nope. From reading that thread it looks like OS4 takes up 98% of internal memory on IDLE mode. No wonder my thigh is always scorching hot from puttin this phone in my pocket

Actually, they want you to get a new phone every two years, just like every other phone maker. Nothing new here.

It's like getting a Hero and installing Honeycomb on it. It's just plain stupid and you shouldn't do it. Some phones can handle the new stuff and most phones can't. Every maker does it.

It's you own damn fault for not doing the research first. I know you don't want to hear that, but it's true. And for people who think I'm an Apple lover, if I had an Android phone that ran honeycomb (when it actually does come out) and someone had an older Android phone running Gingerbread and tried to upgrade, I'd say the exact same thing.

Once again, do the research first and don't when you up your device because you were too lazy to look. That goes for anyone with any smartphone.

wake up. 99% of iphone users dont' even know what an OS is or does. Apple should not pop up the message or recommend the upgrade. They ed up and any apple fanboy that does not recognize this is in a real sad state.

me? I like to get the latest security patches and bugfixes. And don't have time to "look"

Because your phone doesn't have the hardware to handle the iOS. My iPhone 4 does just fine. , I had a hard time killing the battery the other day (I like to drain my battery all the way down every now and then) and I was playing games and watching videos and what not. Just get a new phone. You're going to encounter the same thing with Android if you get a free phone. Those phones are cheaper phones with outdated hardware (they're still nice, capable phones though), but once Honeycomb comes out, you can't upgrade. So unless you want to throw down $200 on a new phone, you're going to encounter the same problem, be it iPhone or Android.

No, a user too lazy to do the right research is just pissed and doesn't want to take responsibility. Again, Android is fixing to do the same thing with the release of Honeycomb. Lots of phones are going to be left behind, and some idiots are going to try and upgrade too. Now, maybe the phones won't let the upgrade go through, and I say good on them if that happens.

But either way, technology moves forward and if you're not prepared to keep up, then don't when you get left behind. , I've had my phone a year, and it's already been passed up by dual core phones. But I don't , I just keep going. In another year, I'll have the new latest and greatest because I like trying to keep up.

Future-proof your . My desktop is 5 years old, but I added so much new to it when I bought it that it has kept up no problem. I can install Windows 7 on this and not have a problem because I made sure the processor is fast enough and has enough internal memory. But above all, if I do upgrade the OS, I'M GOING TO RESEARCH IT FIRST!!!!

But keep complaining. It only makes you look more foolish.

And no, I'm not a technology wiz. I just read about things before I actually try and do them.

Thank you for showing where the problem is. The problem isn't with Apple or Google or the various Android phone makers, it's you. Look in the mirror and say, I have a problem keeping up with technology, and in my mind, that's everyone else's fault instead of mine.

someone is not grasping or not wanting to grasp the concept that Apple ed up. A "regular user" connects their phone and gets a message "upgrade me to the latest" of course they click yes. Next day their phone is a hot piece of that doesn't do .

The "regular user" calls apple and that starts a round of phone calls, conversations, phone reset after phone reset. Weeks turn into months with no improvement.

This same thing happens to thousands of users.

Can you grasp that Apple ed up now???

If they are going to push the update out then it should work much better than it is for so many complaints. I don't get why anyone is even defending that.

And 3 year old phones really aren't that old by any means.

Try installing win7 on a PIII and get back to us on that.

3 years is plenty old in the tech world. Numerically speaking, 3 years isn't old.

It's just a reminder that says new software is available when you connect to iTunes. 3 years old in iPhones is a good bit behind (but not ancient), especially in what games/apps you can run well and not.

wow Apple fanboys have lost it

"A new update is available for your phone. Please click to update it"

this showing up everytime you connect your phone is not a reminder. It is basically pushing users to do it.

Again nobody is discussing the speed technology changes. We are discussing the fact that Apple ed this up by pushing OS 4 to 3G iphones and dropped the ball even further by not fixing the issue and just advising customers to reset their phone twice. Apple has not even released an official statement. Click the link to the thread I posted.

how you can compare this to a user reinstalling Windows 7 on a Window 98 Pentium III computer is beyond me

They were making PIIIs 3 years ago?

When you have to use a 12 year old processor to prove your point you're probably doing a ty job of making a point.

But, for simplicities sake, lets go with your (bad) analogy. Lets say in 2000, I bought a Pentium III from Dell. Then in 2011, when I turn on my PIII desktop, Dell's updater informs me there is an update for my machine and its Windows 7. You think thats a good idea on Dell's part?

Do you think Apple should issue a reminder for someone to update their phone to a piece of software that will not run well? I don't.

Also, the processor difference is substantial between the two phones but I really doubt that the hardware intensity of the two IOS versions is all that great. The processor difference will absolutely make a difference in apps but I'm not too sure that is the case for the baseline OS.

Perhaps ElNono can fill us in on that since he would know better than you or I would.

One huge thing you have to consider, is that the average phone user isn't going to think about their phone specs and whether or not it can handle new software. They're going to see an update from Apple and they're going to do it because Apple is supposed to know better than they do.

Do you forward emails to 10 people in fear of you having 7 years of bad luck?
Do you buy every product from every pop up that pops up in the interwebz?
Geez. There is a cancel button and Do Not Remind Me box on there and they work great for me.

Its iOS 3 and iOS 4. It's not 3.1 3.2 or 3.1111. It's a new number it's a completely new OS that enables multi-tasking for current technology. PIII and the current i5 i7 chips are the means that I'm using to make an analogy that you and other people don't seem to comprehend. I've already stated that apple gambled on people updating their phones to make the shift to iOS less whiny. You wouldn't put a performance engine in a ing Yugo.

I'm not a fanboy. I just don't hop on the latest updates cuz a gun is held to my head whenever I pull up iTunes and hook up my phone. And if a silly program "makes" you update then I think you've lost it, flapjack.
