You were trained as an engineer and should know better than this. A nuclear explosion is an impulse over within minutes. As explosion goes it is a big one but it still remains a short impulse.
A lubricant acts to change the coefficient of friction. The sense of scale is so much more tremendously large. The normal force for a tectonic plate is the other variable. Then you have that act over the course of a decade.
You wave your hands at several thousand explosions as opposed to the internal forces of the earth itself.
