Ed Jackson · Works at Crystal Run HealthcarePhysical Therapist here, see a lot of sports injuries. navicular fractures are a nightmare for athletes, especially large/heavy ones who jump a lot (ie this guy).
The navicular connects the Cuneiform and the talus (which is the keystone of the ankle)
The navic and talus are notoriously blessed with poor circulation, leading to poor healing.
The navic also makes up the top portion of the medial side of the arch of your foot, it's a BAD bone to break, especially for a jumper/runner.
I thought this guy had a bright future, but seeing this I think he should be passed on, even in the top 10.

if he drops down the pecking order where his contract value is under 1m, its worth drafting him, its like paying another scrub at the end of the bench

At spurfans hoping the Lakers don't get Embiid and making up all this bs about him never being able to comeback from this injury. God-Embiid has a chance to be as good as God-Shaq and maybe even better. We all know spurfans fear the potential of a God-Embid combo.
If the Lakers do draft Embiid, by the time he's ready to play, Kobe will either be retired or have another injury. These two won't play together a lot. Good luck pairing an injured rookie with an injured TOSB.

While you're definitely right about this kind of injury, didn't Blake Griffin suffer the same? I may be wrong, but guess there are always exceptions.
In the kneecap, not the foot.

Ilgauskas offers perhaps the most hopeful outcome for Embiid. Ilgauskas' navicular injury -- which kept him from playing during 1996-97, his rookie season -- was again suffered five games into the 1998-99 season, limited him to 29 games over the next three seasons.

But remarkably, after returning to the court in December 2001, Ilgauskas played at least 78 games each of the following five seasons, moving past his foot issues to become a two-time All-Star. He remained a contributor through his retirement in 2011 at age 36.
Wow, Ilgauskas was a s of his former self by 2001.

Is that really best case scenario for Embiid?

I could have sworn that was an ACL. If so, that's like Noel's injury, and nothing like Embiid's.

Maybe LA2 shouldn't take Embiid at 7 if Big Z is the best case scenario.

Meh, taking him at 7 is worth the risk. He was the consensus #1 just a week ago. Good luck getting him to contribute during Kobe's career though.
    not really

I just don't see Embiid not being done. An athlete having a stress fracture is like a building having a cracking foundation. His bones literally can't hold up to the stress of playing basketball. That's never going to change.
Is that why Drummond dominated last year playing 81 games despite having a stress fracture in his back the prior year?

I'd be surprised if Embiid drops lower than 6th, Boston would be stupid to let this guy go. His potential is massive.

You do realize a foot and a back are different parts of the body, right?

He thinks the back is an extension of the foot

My point is a back problem is as severe if not more and devastating for big men, yet Drummond has beaten the odds coming back stronger than ever

Your statement about calling Embiid's career anything but done is ridiculous, considering you don't know the extent of his injury and how everyone's recovery is different than others.

Embiid actually had a stress fracture in his back, reason why he missed a portion of his season in Kansas.

if you want to hold out hope, fine. I don't care what you do. But the only reason people are concerned is because they know this injury is career-ending/career-altering.

The reality is that Embiid's career will likely take one of two courses: short and injury-filled with occasional flashes of brilliant play (Yao post-injury, Lopez now) or long and decent but with significantly less production (and fewer minutes) than people hoped. There's too much history for anyone responsible to hide behind, "Well, you never know."

Someone needs to do a bone-density scan on that kid.

you're not wrong, embiid is a walking red flag, still i think generalizations and premature diagnosis are asinine. people draw yao comparisons but yao wasn't only taller but also carried a lot more weight than embiid.

do i think embiid will be a bust? so far it points to it, but i wouldn't be surprised if these issues becomes a thing of the past with sports medicine in pro ball being a lot more advanced and heavily funded and most organizations treating their players with a lot more caution.

Was Embiid even a legit franchise player in the making before the injury?

People put too much stock into this draft imo
