Yes, it's been discussed before in this thread.

Yeah I thought I remembered reading something, just pay attention till today.

I personally don't care if he's fat or not if he brings his A game to the court and he's finally beginning to.

Right. But I'd prefer if he weren't fat, I think he used to be more athletic before, which was a plus. I also think Sasha was more athletic before, he looked kind of fat too.

Haha I found myself in the stands :D

It was a crazy atmosphere from the start... In tivoli against Russia it was almost nothing against today. I can't imagine how it will be in Warsav :toast (going there with my friends)

FUCK, Dragič injured? Knee? :bang:bang:bang

This game would be perfect without such news :(

Thoughts:

-Overall good or great performance from everyone on the Slovenian team... Jagodnik seems to be the fan favourite hehe. He had some great great moves, true veteran.

-I am pleased Lakovič had a good game. He got abused on defence only in the opening few minutes and after that he played great defence. (mostly on V-Span)

- Spanoulis didn't show anything special. Sub-par performance by him.

- Shortanidis is a cool looking and a nice player allthough a turnover machine. Fun to watch him physically abuse Brezec :lol He showed some fairplay when things got heated up.

-Our team as it was today won't miss Vujačič one bit. Even if he would go to Poland I don't see him getting any minutes or contributing more than the likes of Jagodnik and Samo Udrih.

-Zdovc seems to be settling down some rotations and the overall gameplan is starting to show. That can only be good news... He also seems to be more authorative with every game; thats how a coach must be.

-I PRAY TO THE BASKETBALL GODS THAT DRAGIČ IS HEALTHY!

With Smodiš in the mix as a leader this team has all the posibilites to reach for the medals... But his mental toughness and experience will be really needed.

Kamnik, here's a post from the Slovenian Suns fan on another site:

"He started to complain about the pain on warm up and then after 5 minutes of playing felt a sharp pain and asked coach to come out, which I don't think he's ever done in his life. He was watching the 2nd half in civilian clothes with ice packs on his knee and was rushed to the hospital immediately after the game.

More will be known after the tests, but it's 11 PM here, so I'm afraid not before morning."

Doesn't sound good. Hopefully everything turns out ok tomorrow.

Everyone knows our team and our coach are much smarter than Slovenia team and coach. Everyone in Greece knew we were going to let Slovenia win this game. It is strategy but these idiots from Slovenia are so far behind in basketball level that they can't even figure this out.

If we face them at Eurobasket we will beat them without any doubts at all. The only team Greece has to worry about is Spain and no one else.

Because it is a friendly game and they might face them at Eurobasket. If it was in Greece they would try to win but not in Slovenia.

Three video clips from the game. The first one is not interesting for you, because it's coach's statement after the game and it's in slovenian. The second one is a halftime prayer from the other three point line by Lakovic.

The third one includes confrontation between V-span and Nachbar.

Kalcinacija or Calcination (English) means disposal of calcium in joints. Usually in shoulders, hips or knees. It can hurt like hell and can limit the mobility of affected joint. It gets worst with age. In worst cases surgery may be the only solution.

We win 80-77, but poor hustle under the basket, poor rebounding. Poor game by Lakovic, D. Lorbek and Golemac, Erazem also faded away in the second half.

I just went back far enough in the thread to see this. Hooray for the comeback win! :)

I didn't have internet once I left work or over the weekend and so was kept in suspense about the game's outcome.

Funny story about that though...
The other night in the middle of the night I woke up suddenly and sat up quickly saying, " Oh no!"

Basketball: the satisfaction of victory over Greece, dr. Macura answered Vujačiču

>>

The third topic of conversation was almost inevitable: Aleksander Vujacic, who has serious charges of throwing a bad light power to the entire coaching and medical staff and executives

Slovenian selected species. "The attack was so grave that we were all very affected. It is right that after three days I only got the opportunity to present our side. Starting

on the fact that the program was fitness coach Jadranka Nikolić "unreasonably harsh and dangerous'. Vujacic was the only fellow players practicing on the first day of preparations for the Rogla, when we

boys in the course joined members of the escort. Even I at 61 years, and

although a very long time I ran, I did not feel any effect. How

could such "efforts" dangerous for a professional sportsman? How are they

all others are able to basketball? Vujacic is the second day the

went in China, hurt knee, and then I was convinced that

it is old damage. This was confirmed by the radiologist in a detailed estimated after

magnetic resonance, which was made after the return of basketball in Slovenia, "

Initially, the doctor explained representation.

Really in the hands of mazačev? But would not it obvious problems testing revealed the Faculty of Sport

before the start of preparations? And what is the other side of the story of that back

LA Lakers did not receive medical aid, but only analgesic

tablets and lubrication with olive oil? It sounds as if it were in the hands of šarlatanski

Charlie ... "Vujacic had not Fs testing since he arrived in the U.S. with a lag.

And on arrival did not state that has any problems, but

But after the first day of exercise. When it was suggested therapy, which is also

and massage by ice, which would further effect, and became irresponsible

Shun. So I give an early warning Zdovc coach. I suspect

that did not take tablets at all, because once they forgot at the hotel, the second

something else was wrong, in other approaches, it is always hesitate

and saying that we will start tomorrow. Once by the team director

Mario Kraljevic only lead, but before the start of laser therapy is

said he is not allowed. All this is silent, but it stressed the famous

oil, from which all now shaving fools. But tell me, where the physiotherapist

sports massage on the dry? There was no medicine, but a lubricant in massage our physiotherapist Tea Đekić ... "is a story rounded dr. Slobodan Macura.

Why sad?

He is a lying piece of shit and not a very good basketball player.

He obviously destroys chemistry and thinks he is 10x better than in reality.

Why the hell would anyone even want him back?

I for one applaoud Zdovc for doing what had to be done. He obviouslly needed a lot of balls to do the right thing; not easy to get attacked after it from half the media and Vujacic crying out publicly.

I got to say... Zdovc is looking better and better. At the start of his work i had really big doubts about him. But looking right before the eurobasket... things look well.

Is it time for GTG? For one of Slovenian NT games?

Not a bad idea :tu

Sad, but true

I personally don't like this sort of drama on any team that I follow. Even if the "they left me on the middle of nowhere" accident was blown out of proportion and not nearly as bad as it was made to be, I always felt that the NT should have not let it happen and even if he provoked it with his behavior, they should have at least done a head count before leaving.

But I do give props to Zdovc for having the moral fortitude to kick him off the team. It would have been easier to hide behind the "NBA ring winner" excuse and keep a player that is obviously not a good fit.

And finally I must say that I have rarely seen a guy who manages to rub everybody the wrong way as Sascha does. A good PR rep would probably be a sound investment for him.

The third topic of conversation was almost inevitable: Aleksandar Vujačič, who threw bad light on entire coaching, medical staff and management of slovenian national team with heavy charges.

"His attack was so rough, that it hurt us all. That's why it's right that after all this days i got a chance to present our side of the story. If we start with the claim, that the program of condition coach Jadranko Nikolič vas "unreasonably excessive and insensible" Vujačič practiced with teammates only the first day of preperations on Rogla, when the staff also joined the guys with running. Even i at 61 years, who haven't run in a good while, didn't feel any after affects. How can such "strain" be dangerous for a professional athlete? How did all the other players do it without trouble? Vujačič already felt pain in the knee on the second day, when he was going away to China, and at that time i was sure it was an old injury. That was confirmed by radiologist after a detailed evaluation of magnetic resonance, which was performed on him on his return to Slovenia."

But wouldn't the obvious problems be revealed at the testing on Faculty of Sport (ed. @University of Ljubljana) before the start of preperations? And what is the other side of story about defender of LA Lakers not getting medical help, only pain killers and rubbing with olive oil? It sounds like he was in the hand of sharlatan quacks...

"Vujačič did not take part in the testing on FoS, because he arrived late from the USA. And when he arrived he didn't say he had any problems, only after first day of practice. When we suggested terapy, which apart from the pain killers involved laser terapy, pills agains inflamation and ice massage for an extra effect, he began irresponsible evading. That's why i alerted coach Zdovc. I suspect he didn't take pills at all, because he forgot them at the hotel one time, next time it was something other, with other treatments he kept postponing in always said we'll start tommorow. One time the director of national team Mario Kraljevič did bring him over, but before the start of laser therapy he said, he will not allow it. He kept all this to himself in the statement, but he made a special notion of the famous olive oil, which everybody is making fun of now. But tell me which phisiotherapist performs massage on dry? It wasn't a treatment, it was a lubricant used with massage of our phisiotherapist Teo Djekič..." finished his story dr. Slobodan Macura.

She does not want the ones that violate copyright restrictions. If the game is being streamed online legally and under the agreement with the regulating league or authority, then it is fine. Klobucar Replaces Udrih For Slovenia
04 September 2009

Slovenia swept Germany in their final tune-up games for the EuroBasket this week, yet they couldn't celebrate after losing guard Beno Udrih to a knee injury.

Udrih, who plays for the Sacramento Kings, slipped on the court and got hurt in Wednesday's 70-53 triumph in Bonn and will be sidelined for three weeks.

Jaka Klobucar replaced Udrih in coach Jure Zdovc's Slovenia squad and played in their 74-62 triumph on Thursday in Karlsruhe.

Great Britain Make Final Cuts
05 September 2009

Great Britain coach Chris Finch has included late arrival Pops Mensah-Bonsu in his 12-man squad for the EuroBasket.

Mensah-Bonsu only recently signed for the Houston Rockets and British Basketball had to obtain proper insurance for the power forward/center before he could join the squad in training this week.

The big man missed all of Britain's friendlies in the build-up to Poland, where the team will take on Serbia, Slovenia and world champions Spain in Group C.

Finch cut Justin Robinson and Jermaine Forbes while Kieron Achara and Flinder Boyd made the squad.

Britain have a solid front court because in addition to Mensah-Bonsu, big men Andy Betts, Rob Archibald, Joel Freeland and Dan Clark are travelling to Warsaw.

"It's an interesting roster, we have a lot of depth up front in the big guys and that will be the strength we need to play to," Finch said.

"But I also want to acknowledge the guys who didn't make the roster. Justin did a great job playing at this level and I'm sure he learned a lot.

"This was probably the highest level he has played at in his life. He is definitely one for the future as he gives us some things we just don't have at the moment.

"I'm looking forward him making a big step between now and next summer."

Finch also had encouraging words for Forbes.

"It was the first chance to see what Jermaine could do," Finch said.

"He was extremely solid and I will be interested to see what happens with him over the next year. It was a difficult decision to leave him off but we went for youth in there instead, even though it's a little unbalanced.

"For the first time yesterday (Friday), we had a chance to have our full squad train together. Everyone is in the right frame of mind to compete.

"Over the last couple of days there has been a good spirit in the team and I think everyone is looking forward to arriving in Poland."

It has been a very tough summer for Britain, who do not have their most talented player available with Luol Deng missing the EuroBasket through injury.

The Brits have been able to sample hostile arenas by playing friendly games in Spain and Turkey.

They won just one game this summer, however.

"The key to competing internationally is understanding that you can't control your environment," Finch said.

"When it comes to the national team you can't control certain aspects so you have to make the best of it and stay flexible.

"This year was a good example of that and we have had to demonstrate how we've had to be creative, but I'm confident we have it right."

Britain's first EuroBasket clash is on Monday against Slovenia - the team they beat during preparations.

Great Britain squad: Kieron Achara, Rob Archibald, Andy Betts, Flinder Boyd, Dan Clark, Joel Freeland, Nick George, Jarrett Hart, Mike Lenzly, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Nate Reinking and Andrew Sullivan.

Kecman, Erceg Are Surprise Omissions From Serbia Squad
03 September 2009

by Darko Nikolic, Belgrade

Serbia coach Dusan Ivkovic announced his final roster for the EuroBasket on Wednesday night and opted to spring a couple of mild surprises by releasing veteran guard Dusan Kecman and big man Zoran Erceg.

Stefan Markovic, Milos Teodosic, Milenko Tepic, Nemanja Bjelica, Ivan Paunic, Bojan Popovic, Uros Tripkovic, Milan Macvan, Novica Velickovic, Kosta Perovic, Nenad Krstic and Miroslav Raduljica have made the final squad and will travel to Warsaw to meet Group C opponents Slovenia, Spain and Great Britain.

Kecman and Erceg were with the Blues for 40 days worth of training and/or friendlies but have missed out on Poland.

"After so many practices, games and so much hard work, we've decided who'll represent our country at the continental championship," Ivkovic said.

"As we've planned, we wanted to pick seven players for guard (point and shooting) and (small) forward roles and five for the power forward and center positions, and this is our final list.

"I have had (in the past) a long-lasting decision to have one veteran player in the team who doesn't compete for the roster spot but just for playing time.

"But this time, I've changed that. When I've looked back through the whole period of preparation, all games but, as well, progression of young players such as Paunic and Bjelica, I've decided to cut Kecman from the list, while I was taking care of our prospect and long-term program we've all agreed on. Dusan Kecman gave a lot to our national team, both during qualifications and training for the EuroBasket, and all of us owe him a lot.

"As for Erceg, we've had a different situation. He's playing at position number four (power forward), but Milan Macvan and Novica Velickovic earned their places in the final roster this time.

"Maybe it was because he played less for his club in the previous season, maybe because he wasn't sure about his current (club) status (at Olympiacos), whether or not he'll be loaned out, Erceg didn't show enough at our training camp to be in our final list of 12 chosen players."

At the EuroBasket, Serbia will be led by new captain Nenad Krstic, something that was decided by both the coaching staff and players.

"That decision wasn't made just because Krstic had played more games for national team than any other called players," Ivkovic said.

"It was because he has shown qualities as a player and as a person, and he has shown a rare loyalty to the Serbian squad.

"One piece of the evidence is that just one day after his wedding, he came to our first training for the EuroBasket.

"His authority as player and such attitude towards the national team just made our decision easy."

Smodis And Slovenia Open With Great Britain
06 September 2009
By Simon Wilkinson

EuroBasket newcomers Great Britain have a tough task at hand as they face Slovenia for the second time this summer in their Group C opener on Monday.

This is widely-regarded as a must-win contest for the Brits, as they then face world champions Spain on Tuesday and European powerhouse Serbia on Wednesday.

Both Great Britain and Slovenia are dealing with serious injury blows, the former missing swingman Luol Deng while the latter are without talented guards Beno Udrih, Sasha Vujacic.

As such, this will not be a battle of the stars as much as which team has the biggest desire to win.

And Chris Finch's side has shown it can play through adversity. After gaining promotion from Division B in the summer of 2007, they booked their place for this tournament last summer, despite dropping their first game against Israel in overtime and being without influential big men Robert Archibald and Andrew Betts.

With Deng out, Great Britain will have to change their style of play to be successful, but that's nothing they can't handle according to the coach.

"Every since I took charge of this team in 2006, our style has changed from one year to the next. We have kept the same nucleus but the players have had to adapt to a different pace. Last year, with Luol playing, we were very athletic. This year our main strength is our play down in the post."

In their previous encounter last month, Great Britain beat Slovenia 63-56, but Pops Mensah-Bonsu doesn't put too much importance in that result.

"Even though I wasn't playing myself, I don't pay too much attention to that result. They [Slovenia] were missing - and still are - some key players and they looked tired. It will be a different matter on Monday," he said.

Slovenia have had their own share of problems to overcome. Back when coach Jure Zdovc was put in charge of the team late last year, the Slovenian federation tried to convince Radoslav Nesterovic to rethink his retirement.

The decision was based on the center's desire to let the younger generation get their chance to prove themselves and he has stood by it.

When he was first appointed, Zdovc had targeted a medal finish for Slovenia at this tournament, but that might be a bit too ambitious. Aside from being with Udrih and Vujacic, the Slovenians will be lucky if influential captain Matjaz Smodis overcomes back and knee problems to play before the end of the preliminary round.

Still, Slovenia should not be overlooked. At the EuroBasket in Spain two years ago, with expectations low as they were missing several key players, they won their first five games and finished seventh.

Key match-up: Nate Reinking v Jaka Lakovic.

Key stat: Zero. That's the number of games Pops Mensah-Bonsu has played for Great Britain this summer as they warmed up for this event. He was negotiating a contract with the Houston Rockets and then had to get the insurance that enabled him to play for the national team.

Sounding Off: "Pops will be fine. He's a high-energy guy so I don't worry too much about him and how quickly he will adapt and find his role." -Chris Finch, Great Britain Coach

Battle Of World Champions In Warsaw
06 September 2009
By Jeff Taylor

A battle between the gold medalists of the last two FIBA World Championships will be waged on Monday in Warsaw when 2006 winners Spain face Serbia (2002) in EuroBasket Group C.

Spain, missing their EuroBasket 2007 point guard Jose Manuel Calderon while he recovers from a rough-and-tumble NBA campaign with the Toronto Raptors, have two aims going into this year's event.

Under new boss Sergio Scariolo, their third coach in three years, the Spanish are seeking not only to qualify for Turkey, where next year's FIBA World Championship will be staged.

They are also going for the gold medal that eluded them in Madrid two years ago when JR Holden hit a late jump shot for Russia to stun the Spaniards.

"Gold is our desire, our dream and our aim," said Scariolo, who has followed in the footsteps of EuroBasket 2007 coach Pepu Hernandez and 2008 boss Aito Garcia.

"But first, we must take the first steps with security and personality.

"There has never been a team that has stepped onto the podium on the first day of competition. You step onto the podium on the final day and that is why we must focus on the first game."

Calderon made the all-tournament team two years ago and so did Pau Gasol, who unlike the former is in this summer's squad despite requiring a finger operation early in the preparations that kept him out of the country's friendly games.

Fresh off an NBA title-winning campaign with the Los Angeles Lakers, Gasol considered skipping this summer with the national team but the desire to win gold was too much to ignore.

It remains to be seen how many minutes he will play in Group C while he recovers from his finger injury.

Spain are better equipped than most teams to make up for the absences of players and in that respect, Ricky Rubio, Raul Lopez, Carlos Cabezas and Juan Carlos Navarro will get plenty of minutes with Calderon out.

Gasol's younger brother, Marc, who is also in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies, will play big minutes at center and Felipe Reyes, as usual, will offer a combative presence under the basket at power forward.

Rudy Fernandez missed games through injury along with Alex Mumbru, but both should be fit to play.

The opposition will ask a lot of questions of Spain.

Serbia is a country with a lot of basketball tradition, although the last medal by the senior team was in 2002 in Indianapolis. That team was Yugoslavia.

After falling in all three of their games in 2007, Dusan Ivkovic was handed the reins and the veteran coach led the side through a successful 2008 that culminated with first place in Group A of Division A ahead of Bulgaria, Italy, Finland and Hungary.

Novica Velickovic is one of their hottest players, the forward having earlier this summer secured a move to Real Madrid from Partizan Belgrade.

Serbia also have the reliable center, Nenad Krstic, as their lone NBA representative in this year's team.

Krstic has been such an inspiration with the Blues that Ivkovic and the players decided to make him captain.

The strength of this Serbia team, which has the main hope of clinching a top-six finish to qualify for the FIBA World Championship in Turkey, is perhaps that no players really do stand out.

It truly is a team of unselfish players.

Those who come off the bench offer so much that they could easily be starters.

Still, it's hard to look past Spain in any of their games.

Lithuania did beat them in Vilnius in their last warm-up game and Pau Gasol said: "The defeat against Lithuania in our last warm-up game should let us know how we shouldn't play."

Most people expect Scariolo's team to reach the podium.

"We all have good vibrations, despite having had an injury-riddled preparation," Scariolo said.

"The team has arrived as it needed to arrive. Now we have to compete."

Key match-up: Marc Gasol v Nenad Krstic.

Key stat: Turnovers. Serbia need to be on their guard against a Spanish team that gets a spark from the steal-happy Rubio.

Sounding Off: "Serbia has talent and young players hungry to make names for themselves. They are strong, they know how to play and most of all, they put the ball in. It appears they are going back to what used to be Serbian basketball. We must start on the right foot because if we want to be champions, we must establish the rhythm from the start." -Pau Gasol (Spain)

Finch names GB EuroBasket squad

Meet GB basketball's big guys

EUROBASKET 2009, Poland, 7-20 September
GB matches: 7 September v Slovenia (1715 BST); 8 September v Spain (2000 BST); 9 September v Serbia (2015 BST)
Coverage: GB games live on Red Button and BBC Sport website (UK only)

GB coach Chris Finch has selected his 12-man EuroBasket finals roster, with Justin Robinson and Jermaine Forbes failing to make the cut.

Fit-again Kieron Achara, Houston's Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Malaga's Rob Archibald and Joel Freeland are all included.

Former GB Under-20 international Dan Clark is the youngest player and will travel to his first senior finals.

"We have a lot of depth up front in the big guys and that will be the strength we need to play to," said Finch.

"For the first time yesterday we had a chance to have our full squad train together. Everyone is in the right frame of mind to compete. "

Team GB begin their campaign in Poland against Slovenia on Monday as they attempt to put a trying summer behind them.

Their performance on Europe's top stage - for the first time in 28 years - will help determine whether they get to play in the London Olympics in 2012.

Denied an automatic host's spot, GB must convince Fiba, the world governing body, that they are competitive at the top level in order to take part in 2012.

Even before they assembled for the summer programme, GB had been hit by the news that Chicago Bulls star Luol Deng would not play through injury and that the anticipated debut of another NBA player, Ben Gordon, would not take place.

Since then, almost every player on Finch's team has been injured and that was before a gastric complaint spread through the camp.

The upshot has been a succession of poor results, as GB struggled with the difficult adjustment to the demands of life in the top tier of European basketball.

Only in the last week has the news improved, with Mensah-Bonsu belatedly joining the roster. His scoring and rebounding could prove crucial on a team that has struggled this summer.

The team has won only once in nine starts and only scored more than 70 points on one occasion, when they lost 86-84 to Latvia on the opening night in Turkey. Only centre Andy Betts averages more than 10 points per game.

"Scoring's a problem - we're missing a lot of lay-ups inside and we're not shooting the ball particularly well, so if we pass up open shots or take shots, they don't go in," Finch told BBC Sport.

"What we're telling our guys is to be more patient, because if you take poor shots or make poor decisions, things get away from you very quickly at this level."

GB Captain Andrew Sullivan added: "I think we got to this stage a lot sooner than people thought - we exceeded people's expectations.

"We still have to adjust to the teams that we're playing against now."

GB's opponents in Group B will not be helping them out. Spain, the current world champions, proved more than a match for the US Dream Team in last year's Olympic final and Serbia, in the guise of Yugoslavia, have dominated European basketball for most of the last quarter of a century.

Slovenia are the only team they have beaten in nine starts this summer and not surprisingly, the opener is one GB will target in their bid to get through to the second phase.

"I really feel like Slovenia is our one chance," said forward Joel Freeland. "They will have all their players coming in, but we already beat them when their NBA guys were playing."

Since that defeat to GB in Seville, Slovenia have retooled and beaten Greece, one of the title favourites in Poland.

"No question - we're putting all our thoughts and energies towards Slovenia now," said assistant coach Nick Nurse. "We've played a heavy, heavy schedule.

"I thought we made some serious improvements with the games against Slovenia and Latvia. Maybe we took a little step back after that."

GB's first objective is to finish in the top three in their group and advance to the second phase in Lodz, where they would play three further games. To do that, they would need to win at least one game in the first three days of competition.

With such a tough draw and the chaotic summer the squad has endured so far, reaching the second phase would be a considerable achievement.

GB final squad: Kieron Achara (age 26, 6ft 10in), Robert Archibald (29, 6ft 11in), Andrew Betts (32, 7ft 1in), Flinder Boyd (29, 5ft 11in), Dan Clark (20, 6ft 11in), Joel Freeland (22, 6ft 11in), Nick George (26, 6ft 6in), Jarret Hart (28, 6ft 5in), Mike Lenzly (28, 6ft 3in), Pops Mensah-Bonsu (25, 6ft 9in), Nate Reinking (35, 6ft 2in), Andrew Sullivan (29, 6ft 8in)

Freeland: Slovenia clash crucial

Eurosport - Sat, 05 Sep 00:35:00 2009
Buzz Up!

Great Britain's Joel Freeland insists his side's opening clash with Slovenia will make or break their EuroBasket campaign in Poland.

Chris Finch's (pictured) men have been handed a tough draw in Group C with Olympic silver medallists and world champions Spain, along with Serbia, making up the quartet.

Great Britain will be buoyed by the fact they completed a 63-56 victory over Slovenia last month - without the services of Freeland, Rob Archibald and NBA star Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

Mensah-Bonsu has now been cleared to take part in EuroBasket, having secured a contract with the Houston Rockets, while Archibald and Freeland will both be available for the match on Monday.

And Freeland insists his side must make a winning start in Poland, or forget about making any progress beyond the group stages.

"Slovenia will be huge because we have got them first game and I think it will be our one chance to get out of the group," said Freeland.

"With it being our first game we will be fresh and won't be tired as if we had two or three games under our belt. From the other game I felt we played so well and that is already giving us confidence.

"As long as we give 110 per cent and go all out I feel confident we will win. Beating them the way we did in Spain was a massive boost and it means that we already know we have it in us to win.

"I really feel like Slovenia is our one chance. They will have their players coming in, but we already beat them when their NBA guys were playing.

"If you look at their team they are unbelievable. It's packed with high level players which is why it was incredible how we came together and came up against competition like that and showed professionalism in the game.

"I feel that if we can get that win against Slovenia then it would give us real momentum moving into the next game, even if that is against Spain."

While Great Britain chalked up victory against Slovenia last month, it was their solitary win in nine warm-up matches ahead of EuroBasket, as the absence of Chicago Bulls star Luol Deng took its toll.

But Freeland, who is set to join Archibald at Malaga next season, is adamant past results will count for nothing once proceedings get underway in Poland.

"It's been a tough campaign so far, we've had to deal with a lot of things going against us while at the same time taking on better opposition," he added.

"Obviously we would love to have results on our side but the main reason we play these games is to get better and try to achieve goals for Poland.

"Nothing has been going in our favour much; now most of the guys have been ill. I couldn't play two games in Turkey because of this bug.

"It's just made it tougher because for all the games we have not had a full squad, but that means Poland will be exciting to see what we can finally do when everyone is fit.

"If teams don't treat us with respect then it will be to our advantage. Any team that acts off us we will jump on them.

"The team is different from year to year but I feel there's definitely more chemistry going into this year to last. Everyone knows everyone and we all know the way we each play. We will definitely cause some shocks; we're ready to play that's for sure."

FLINDER BOYD INTERVIEW
09/06/2009

THIS Monday, Team Great Britain will carry the hopes of all British basketball fans on their shoulders when they play their opening game of Eurobasket 2009.

It's the latest step in a new era for British basketball and although we'll have to make do without the inspirational Luol Deng on the court, we're all hoping the 12 guys who suit up for Team GB will make us proud.

One of those 12 who is off to Poland is Flinder Boyd, a guard who broke into the national team just over a year ago and spent the second half of last season with the Leicester Riders in the BBL.

Boyd may have been born in San Francisco and raised in Los Angeles, but he's proud of his British roots.

"My father was born and raised in Britain, and my parents lived here for a while," he said. "I've lots of aunts, uncles and cousins living in Britain."

Playing in the UK has been a good experience for Boyd, especially as lot of relatives have been able to see him in action, although the occasion they saw him play for the Riders was memorable for the wrong reason!

He explained: "I had some family come down to the game in London against the Capital which was actually pretty embarrassing as I think they doubled the attendance!

"So I'm glad they got to go to the o2 and see a real basketball game.

"I had about 20 people come to the game at the o2; it was very exciting."

Boyd originally came to GB Coach Chris Finch's attention when his agent contacted Finch and told him of Boyd's eligibility. Boyd attended a training camp in Florida and despite making the squad, his then Spanish club refused to let him play.

After that setback, Boyd eventually made his debut in August 2008 and we asked him what it's like playing for Team GB?

"I've loved it, it's been great," Boyd replied. "You get to travel all over the place and representing GB for my father and his family is really special.

"The team is made up of some really good guys and we've spent every day of the last six or seven weeks together.

"It's been a really enjoyable experience."

It's been a tough preparation for Eurobasket; Team GB have suffered from injuries (most notably Luol Deng), the will he or won't he saga with Ben Gordon, and the absence of Pops Mensah-Bonsu while he sorted his NBA future.

Without a full squad for Finch to work with, it's probably no surprise the team only managed one win in their warm-up games.

So ahead of Monday's crucial opener, we asked Boyd for his thoughts on them and what the feeling was around the camp ahead of that Slovenia game.

"I think it's been difficult because we didn't have some of guys from last summer; Pops didn't play any of the games and Luol obviously isn't playing this summer," he replied. "We've played better competition than last summer, playing against some of the best teams in the World.

"So I think it's been a learning experience and we've struggled, but overall I think the addition of Pops now and having spent 5-6 weeks together, I hope we'll be able to win one of these games and advance to the second round."

He added: "We know ultimately that we have nothing to lose, we are the big underdogs and we're going to try [and cause an upset].

"We're optimistic even though we struggled a bit in the friendlies and we know it just takes one good game, one win to move to the second round and there anything can happen.

"We kind of knew it would be a learning curve, playing against the top teams in Europe and we didn't expect to come in, run through these teams and beat them.

"We knew there'd be some bumps in the road so I don't think the morale is low.

"I actually think we're fairly optimistic and that if anything, it might prove that while we haven't won too many friendlies, we are capable of playing with these teams and ultimately I think it's a great experience."

Not only is Eurobasket a chance for Boyd to help his team-mates take the team as far into the tournament as possible, it's also a chance to put himself in the shop window.

Despite having some good games for club and country last year, he was as of Friday, still looking for a club for this coming season. Therefore he's hoping a few good games on the big stage will help him get a contract next year and that's crucial for remaining part of the GB squad.

With a number of British basketball fans making the trip to Poland, Boyd hopes to see "many Union Jacks in the stadium", and for those fans who'll be watching back home in Britain, his final word was; "I hope as many as that can watch, watch it and tell their friends, to help get as much interest as possible."

Boyd has been blogging about life with the GB team, amongst other things, and you want to follow what he's got to say, head over to his blog page:

The second thing which really hit home was the size of the press area. Basically one whole side of the Arena. My mate got his accreditation and we moved up to the press benches to watch the practice game. 2 hours spent watching a meaningless game in an empty arena, priceless.

We had established that Slovenia were on first for practice at 4pm followed by GB at 5.30 and with nothing better to do on a temperate Warsaw Sunday decided to hang on. SamoUdrih was the first on court followed by Lakovic and the rest.

And the rest seemed to included half of the Slovenian secret police. As they scanned the empty press benches their gaze settled upon two generously girthed Geordies. What directed their attention to my GB basketball jumper wearing colleague I simply cant understand. Attempting to look busy I immediately grabbed a pen and pad and started pretending to make notes. Probably not the smartest move.

The language barrier was jumped and we made out way out at reasonable pace I thought although clearly not quickly enough for the female Slovenian security guard who followed us 20 yards behind the whole way and probably shut the door on us as well.

Kicked out of the Slovenian practice in what must have been about the worst attempt at espionage ever.

WE'RE READY TO PLAY - MENSAH-BONSU
6 September 2009, 6:27 pm
by British Basketball
Pops Mensah Bonsu
With less than 24 hours until they open their EuroBasket campaign Pops Mensah-Bonsu insists Britain are ready and raring to go.
A fully fit Standard Life GB men's roster completed two training sessions at the Torwar Arena on Sunday, much to the relief of Chris Finch, who has so far this summer had his hand forced on selection owing to injuries and illness. Indeed Mensah-Bonsu was a late addition, only joining the team last week, but he is adamant GB are not simply in Poland to make up the numbers. "We are ready to go; we've anticipated this for a while now and I'm glad we are finally here, especially on a personal level as I've had to wait for my time to be with the team," said the Londoner. "You could look at each game one at a time, but at the end of the day they are all going to be tough. Obviously people have been saying this is the hardest group here and there's a reason for that. "We will just try and go out and go hard. To get out of this group you're looking at needing a couple of wins and there's no doubt that not only would that be a great achievement within the group and within Europe, but also in the world because of the calibre of opposition we are up against. "We've come out here with a couple of notable results, particularly the win against Slovenia, but the guys know they have to put those games behind them. Everything pre Poland we have to put behind us and focus on the road that lies ahead. "I haven't played with the team yet, but from what I've heard we've had one too many turnovers and we can't do that now. We just need to play hard and try and get some easy baskets." Britain play Slovenia at 17:15 BST on Monday 7 September, while the other Group C game will see World Champions Spain play Serbia at 20:00.

SLOVENIA IS MUST WIN GAME - FREELAND

While Britain may face a tough task of qualifying from the group of death, when EuroBasket tips off on Monday, Joel Freeland has highlighted their opening game against Slovenia as the key to their success.
World champions Spain will be favourites to top Group C, if not lift their first European title, after they pushed the USA all the way in the Beijing Olympic final before settling for silver. And although Serbia have only made one European Championship appearance, in 2007, it is Slovenia whom Freeland believes the Standard Life GB men must beat.

The two sides have already met and it was GB who took the early scalp, beating the Slovenians 63-56 in a test game in Seville. The result was even more significant given Britain triumphed without Freeland, Rob Archibald or Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

Slovenia have competed in every European Championship competition since their debut in 1993 and this summer their roster boasts two NBA players; Goran Dragic of the Phoenix Suns and Beno Udrih of the Sacramento Kings, while LA Lakers' Aleksander Vujacic was cut from the squad last month, despite having turned out against Britain.

"Slovenia will be huge because we have got them first game and I think it will be our one chance to get out of the group," said 22-year-old Freeland.

"With it being our first game we will be fresh and won't be tired as if we had two or three games under out belt. From the other game I felt we played so well and that is already giving us confidence.

"As long as we give 110% and go all out I feel confident we will win. Beating them the way we did in Spain was a massive boost and it means that we already know we have it in us to win.

"I really feel like Slovenia is our one chance. They will have their players coming in, but we already beat them when their NBA guys were playing.

"If you look at their team they are unbelievable. It's packed with high level players from NBA and ACB which is why it was incredible how we came together and came up against competition like that and showed professionalism in the game.

"I feel that if we can get that win against Slovenia then it would give us real momentum moving into the next game, even if that is against Spain."

Freeland, who will play alongside Archibald at Malaga next season, admits it has been a tough summer so far for the British side. With the level of competition considerably higher GB have only recorded one win in nine games, but Freeland believes results aren't important at this stage.

"It's been a tough campaign so far, we've had to deal with a lot of things going against us while at the same time taking on better opposition. Even Israel, whom we beat last year, was a tough game.

"Obviously we would love to have results on our side but the main reason we play these games is to get better and try to achieve goals for Poland. I feel comfortable looking at those games we have done wrong in and keep working on what we need to.

"Nothing has been going in our favour much; now most of the guys have been ill. I couldn't play two games in Turkey because of this bug. It's just made it tougher because for all the games we have not had a full squad, but that means Poland will be exciting to see what we can finally do when everyone is fit.

"If teams don't treat us with respect then it will be to our advantage. Any team that acts off us we will jump on them.

"The team is different from year to year but I feel there's definitely more chemistry going into this year to last. Everyone knows everyone and everyone knows the way we each play. We will definitely cause some shocks; we're ready to play that's for sure."

What's the word on Smodis? Will he play the group stage? He's been having contact practices?

He started doing two on two and three on two practices, they plan to use him in the second part of the tournament if he has no back pain.

I expect a lot of zone from the Brits. If our outside shot is falling it will be a blowout, otherwise we're in for a long night.

Go Slovenia!

They are keeping Smodis in the team and we still don't know if he'll play. And when Vujacic was less injured they kicked him away. Just stupid.I know we need Smodis more than Sasha, but if he wont play at high level then fuck it. Vujacic at 50% is still better than Klobucar at 110%.

Shut - the - fuck - up and get with the program. You'll have plenty of time to bitch about that after the championship. Lets focus on the players we have.
