The first day of games in Group F in Lodz had as its focus the big match between Turkey and Spain that drew a lot of attention.

Serbia's win over Poland and Lithuania's big defeat to Slovenia had their share of attention as well in this day five edition of Good News, Bad News.

The Good News

Jaka bettered Lithuania

Two main reasons why Slovenia trashed Lithuania by 23 points was three-point shooting on both ends of the floor. Lithuania hit six times on just 27.3% while Slovenia's Jaka Lakovic bettered that single handedly, making six out of nine attempts. Slovenia combined the best long distance shooting performance of the competition with 13 three-pointers on 48.1% shooting to put Lithuania in a seriously uncomfortable spot.

8 points after group part, same as Spain and then it goes to point difference which is currently +44 for Slovenia and +8 for Spain. As long as we don't lose spectacularly against Turkey and Spain at same time doesn't do a blow-out on Poland we're fine.

In 1/4 final we play with Russia. Difficult but beatable.

Turning Point: With the game tied at 29-29 late in the second quarter, Slovenia went on a 20-3 run over the next nine minutes to pull away.

Hero: Slovenia center Erazem Lorbek had 10 points in that crucial run and finished with a game-high 20 points. Lorbek also pulled down nine rebounds and dished out five assists while blocking one shot.

Key Stats: Slovenia finished 19 of 33 (58%) shooting from inside the arc while Poland were 15 of 39 (38%).
Slovenia forced Poland into making 15 turnovers.

Good News, Bad News: Day Seven

The second day of the games in Group F in Lodz presented some very disturbing shooting performances.

Yet Slovenia, Turkey and Spain still earned good words for their ability to step up in key times.

The Good News


Keeping the ball

Only one team in the competition averaged less than ten turnovers per game so far - Slovenia. In the win over Poland it came into full effect as they wrote their tournament low with only six. Actually half of them came in a span of one minute, which makes it even more amazing: Just three turnovers in 39 minutes, including a run of 18 full minutes without turning the ball over once.

Jaka in the run

Jaka Lakovic's performance so far makes him a worthy runner for the MVP award of the tournament. Considering he's shooting in only 28.6% inside the arc it might be unclear why he's in the race, but in any other aspect Lakovic is on fire. He has hit 18 three-pointers at a 51.4% clip and actually had 14 more baskets from distance than from two-point range and the same amount from the free throw line where he is shooting 85.7%. Add 4.2 assists per game and a 2.1 assists/turnovers ratio to his team's performance so far and that spot in the MVP run is crystal clear.

Stats: 1-10 - That was Omar Asik's free-throw performance against Serbia, the biggest reason why Turkey were only 18 of 31 from the charity stripe. The center has made only five of 24 attempts from the foul line so far in the tournament.

Turkey will put their perfect mark (4-0) on the line when they face their closest challengers Slovenia (3-1) in the final game of EuroBasket 2009 Qualifying Round on Wednesday.

A win for Bogdan Tanjevic's men will see them top Group F while a loss would drop them into second place behind Slovenia, based on the head-to head.

A defeat for Jure Zdovc's side could spell trouble as they could finish second or third, depending on the results from the day's earlier games (Lithuania v Serbia and Poland v Spain).

It's been a while since Turkey last had something to smile about at the EuroBasket, but as they prepare to face Slovenia on Wednesday in the last game of the Qualifying Round, they are safe in the knowledge that they will be returning to the knockout stages for the first time in eight years.

Despite the fact that, as hosts, Turkey have an automatic berth for the World Championships, the Milwaukee Bucks forward isn't satisfied in seeing his team just round up the numbers for the knockout stages in Poland.

"We have done a very good job to come here and win our first five games but our job isn't done," he warned. Anyway Turkey defended with wide spreaded zone 2-1-2. If 2-1-2 zone is not played perfectly, it is very penetratable. I doubt that Croatia is able to execute 2-1-2 as well as Turkey. Zones 3-2 and 2-3 should be piece of cake for our 3pt shooters.

Game Summary

Turning point: With Turkey down by two in the closing seconds, Ender Arslan drove to the basket and decided to pass off - when he had an open lay-up - to Engin Atsur, who went for the win instead of a tie with a three-point attempt from the corner, which he missed.

Hero: With Bostjan Nachbar plagued by foul trouble, Goran Jagodnik came off the bench and hit some timely baskets in the last two quarters to hold off Turkey's furious charge.

Stats: Slovenia made 13 of 31 three-point attempts while Turkey were just 5 of 20.

Well because we had Dragic back then, now we don't. And if I remember right he was one of the main players in that game.
We can't do much with just one PG. It's difficult against a team that doesn't have that good PGs, but all our next opponents have them.

I was really unhappy with news, that Zdovc is our new coach back than. I was really mad with the way Zdovc knocked Vujačič out od a team - but, I have to eat my crow

Zdovc is by far best coach our NT ever had. He and his stuff prepares good for the games, changes are on time, time-out are called when needed, no player is forgoten on the bench. He is our main advantage against Croatia - he leads the team flawless.

If players will be able (will Nachbar play at all?) to execute his ideas, we will win Croatia. Believe!

I personally thought we were doomed 1 month ago because of our captain "Zdovc" and our on floor captian Lakovič. Even if we had Smodiš&Lorbek frontcourt at that time.
