Hm, do you think Wenger is beginning to think that selling your two best midfielders and bringing no new players to replace them might not be the best strategy to build a competitive team?
His strategy is way off for several years now. Wenger keeps playing little kids with little to none experience year after year, and when some of those kids develop to decent players they don't want to remain there as the team as a whole is always too young and inexperienced to be a serious threat on any competition.
I give Wenger and Arsenal credit for their scouting and good developing of young players, but he has to realize that's not enough to be competitive in today's football. He should know that as well, since when he actually won something with Arsenal it was with very experienced players, lots of them world and European champions, and not with a bunch of teenagers.

I would like to say the club is in overall a very strong position because for 14 years on the trot we play in the Champions League, said Wenger. We have a new stadium, a fantastic training ground, a very strong financial situation and a very strong team. They have proved that when we are under pressure they can respond with football and remain calm and composed. We showed great belief.

I had to leave after the first half and just got home. Conceding 8 goals is inexcusable, no matter who is injured or suspended.
I just don't see any defensive concept by Wenger. Thinking offensively first is fine and all, but is not everything in football. That being said, the quality of the squad is just poor these days. One borderline world class player who has yet to go through a whole season without injuries, that is all. The rest are either mediocre players, unproven youngsters or just plain bad (Djourou for example).

I just don't get it. Targeting players earlier this summer could have:
1) Encouraged unsettled players to stay as Arensal, as it'd show they were serious about a title run;
2) Even if the players left, they'd have replacements.
Instead, they did nothing and waited for their best players to leave. I finally know how it feels to be a Suns fan.

Yeah, it's mind-boggling.
Santos would be a decent signing, I guess. I'll have to admit I don't know much about him, though. But Arsenal need a LB, and he would add some experience.

Technically, sure. But we all know soccer is a sport where a team can court a signed player without penalty, and players can easily whine their way to other teams even under contract. And it's pretty pointless to keep want-away players.
In any case, Arsenal lost Nasri and Fabregas and had no backup plan. Why they would wait until the last week of August is a mystery to everyone, but they're paying for it.

So, Mertesacker to Arsenal seems a done deal. Good signing! He can instantly replace Koscielny. I think he will do fine in the PL. Merte is not the quickest, but his positioning is really good, and he will give Arsenal some much needed height as well. Plus he is a very experienced player.

But I don't have a side I consistently follow, just like good football.

Sky Sports sources understand Craig Bellamy has been given permission to leave Wales' training camp to travel to Liverpool to discuss a return to Anfield.
Bellamy (http://topics.skysports.com/Craig+Bellamy/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif had been preparing for Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro at the Cardiff City (http://topics.skysports.com/Cardiff+city/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif Stadium with the rest of Gary Speed's squad.
A late transfer before Wednesday night's deadline always appeared possible, with Bellamy a long way down the pecking order at Manchester City (http://topics.skysports.com/Manchester+City/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif and not in Roberto Mancini's plans for this season.
A number of clubs were keeping tabs on his situation and Queens Park Rangers (http://topics.skysports.com/Queens+Park+Rangers/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif and Stoke appeared to be leading the chase for his signature.
However, it is now thought that Bellamy could end up making a surprise move back to Anfield after two-and-a-half years at City.
The Football Association (http://topics.skysports.com/Football+Association/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif of Wales is understood to have allowed the striker to make his way from Wales to Merseyside for talks and a medical.
Bellamy spent the 2006/7 campaign with Liverpool (http://topics.skysports.com/liverpool/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif under Rafa Benitez, before leaving for West Ham.

It's nice to see some experience out there instead of the youthful crap they've been sporting the last few weeks. The flow of the offense is much better with Arteta out there. Also having a big experienced body in Mertesacker in the defensive line is just a God send.
Walcott has been trash, that guy needs to get benched or something and his attitude last game is not helping matters.
I really want to see how this team is going to play in the UEFA Champions League with Gervinho and Alex Song and what kind of lineup they'll put on the pitch with all the players returning minus the injured ones. Not sure if I'm overestimating Gervinho, but his absence is really noticeable. This team doesn't have that many playmakers. He can break down the defense and score for himself or he can assist for a goal which is noticeably lacking with the way the team has struggled for goals this year mainly RVP imo.

Agreed, even if Arteta and Merte aren't exactly world class players, they add valuable experience.
The flow of the offense is much better with Arteta out there.
Not yet, in my opinion, but it was only one game, and I think he will be able to help Arsenal in that department.
Arsenal's game is still lacking pace and fluidity so far - Wilshere is definitely missing.
But give them some time to work in the new players, let Wilshere and Vermaelen come back into the squad, and I think Arsenal will at least be able to play for the fourth spot in the PL and for the knock-out stages in the CL.
Muser
09-12-2011, 01:31 PM
With the signings they made Arsenal should be able to challenge for the 4th spot, 1, 2 and 3 will obviously be taken by the two Manchester's and Chelsea but the other contenders for the 4th spot have all started quite poorly apart from Liverpool (to a degree anyway) so it's up for grabs.

Blues probe Torres over comments
September 12, 2011

By ESPNsoccernet staff
Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/manager?id=192) has confirmed the club are looking into an interview by Fernando Torres (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/player/_/id/24257/Fernando-Torres) in which the benched striker appeared to criticise his own team-mates.

• Sign up for Champions League Pick 'em (http://games.espn.go.com/champions-league-pickem/en_GB/frontpage?&de2Atmpts=2)
Torres, who has scored just one goal since his £50 million transfer from Liverpool in January, spoke to the official website of Spain's Primera Liga and appeared to hint at a lack of service from Chelsea's "older" and "very slow" players in an English translation that later appeared on his personal website.
Villas-Boas sought an explanation from Torres, who claimed his words were not translated accurately on his own website.
Chelsea are now seeking to obtain a copy of the interview in its original Spanish and Villas-Boas revealed he would warn Torres not to speak so candidly about the club in future if the translation did stand up.
"We are going in-depth to regain the tape of that interview," Villas-Boas said. "We'll see if things play exactly as they are in that interview. We want to go in-depth a bit more. Anyhow, it's one player's perspective. I don't think it's a perspective that the manager shares. I don't have to share my players' ideas sometimes."
Meanwhile, amid the controversy, Villas-Boas is hoping his decision to drop Torres for the 2-1 win against Sunderland on Saturday in favour of Daniel Sturridge (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/player/_/id/85291/Daniel-Sturridge) will spark the striker into life.
Sturridge justified his inclusion with a crucial goal, and while Villas-Boas refused to confirm whether Torres would be reinstated to the starting XI for Chelsea's Champions League opener against Bayer Leverkusen at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, he revealed he expected the striker to benefit from his time on the bench.
"Any player that is not part of the squad, or not part of the selected players is not happy," Villas-Boas said. "I am glad that they are not happy because it means that maybe you can stimulate them to go one step further.
"Or maybe you can motivate them a little bit more and when they come back to being selected or to starting in the first XI they can still perform."
