Refs on England are way to permissive, you need to break somebody's leg to get a yellow. I didn't watch the game but it wouldn't surprise me a bit if Cole didn't get booked for that challenge.

When the ball is out of bounds you can't award a foul but you can penalize a player for commiting an ilegal action.

Poor first half by Arsenal, but the second was a step in the right direction, even if it was only against Bolton.
I'm pleased with Arteta so far, and Gervinho can add something as well when his last decision (be it passing or finishing) becomes the right one more often than it is right now.
Well, and RvP scored his 100th goal for the club. :hat

The announcer said that Mertesacker didn't get there quickly enough. The dude is slow like molasses and against quick players or broken plays, he's a liability more than anything else. The defense is depleted though and I'm not trying to make excuses for them. That's why Alex Song is playing in the d-line.

NASpurs
10-02-2011, 10:54 AM
Arsenal looks so discombulated, out of sync. Alex Song had a horrible first 15 minutes, Mertesacker and Ramsey are the two weak links in that first half. I wouldn't mind seeing Oxlade-Chamberlain in there and maybe Frimpong to change things up a bit. Can't really do anything with the sad state of the defense though. I think Santos is the only one left.

It really is. People are still looking down on them since they got absolutely abused but United and City but that was United and City.

Adding Adebayor has elevated Tottenham a full level if not two. Just his presence alone commands a ton of respect. They have to buy him and Redknapp probably will.

I think most of what VDV does is desperation because his strikers aren't doing anything or his wingers don't deliver the ball to the proper person. I can't tell you how many times he's been wide open for an easy goal and whoever has the ball panics and turns it over (Lennon is a great example of this. If only he had a brain...).

I agree he does weird things but in the context of the game I can usually see why he does the things he does.

Muser

Tottenham are going in the right path, getting rid of Crouch and bringing in Adebayor was a top move. Walker is turning into a top defender and he's gonna be awesome for England. Just a shame Bale is Welsh.

LeBron James to attend Liverpool match

By Marc Stein
ESPN.com

For the first time since he became a minority owner of Liverpool Football Club in the English Premier League in April, LeBron James will be in the crowd this weekend at iconic Anfield to see the team play.

The Miami Heat forward tweeted Thursday that he had arrived in England and later confirmed to ESPN.com that he'll be attending Liverpool's home game Saturday morning against longtime rival Manchester United.

Saturday's game, televised live on ESPN2 at 7:40 a.m. ET, is the first meeting between the two English giants since Manchester United won the league championship in May and passed Liverpool as the winningest club in the country's history. United has won 19 titles in England's top flight to Liverpool's 18.

"Yeah, I'm going for sure!" James told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard Thursday night. "Wouldn't miss this one! Biggest game in the world probably."

In April, as part of an agreement with Fenway Sports Group to become the sole marketer of his rights globally, James and manager Maverick Carter were installed as minority shareholders in Liverpool, which ranked as England's most renowned club globally in the 1970s and 1980s but hasn't won the league title since 1990.

Liverpool was purchased in October 2010 by John W. Henry and the group that owns and operates the Boston Red Sox.

According to the Guardian newspaper in London, Liverpool's 3-1 defeat of Manchester United last season attracted an estimated 500 million viewers worldwide, whereas the Super Bowl is watched by 20 million viewers outside of the United States.

"Just got to Liverpool, England," James tweeted Thursday. "Riding through the city. What a beautiful place. Home and birthplace of the One and Only 'BEATLES.' "

The Premier League season runs from August through May, which is virtually concurrent with the NBA calendar, but the league's ongoing lockout -- heading into its 106th day Friday -- has afforded James an opportunity to make an unexpected in-season visit to Anfield.

Marc Stein is a senior NBA writer for ESPN.com. Chris Broussard is a senior NBA writer for ESPN The Magazine.

I think Kuyt is an absolute maniac. He'll attack, come back and defend, recover possession, distribute in the midfield, he'll do it all. He's not the best finisher of all time, but I think he's the type of player that has defined Liverpool over the last decade.

:lol balotelli

A cross from Milner and a side-footed finish from Balotelli, who puts his shirt over his head to reveal a t-shirt that reads "Why always me?" Brilliant.

Balotelli is booked for revealing his t-shirt, which seems ridiculous to me, especially given how funny it was. He didn't remove it, just pulled it over his head, a la Paul Scharner yesterday

isn't it a rule now that the lifting/removing of shirt is an automatic booking?? I think lifting your shirt to reveal a message of any kind might be a rule. Not really deserving in this case but if this in fact is a rule it removes any subjectivity on the referee's part.

"It was our worst ever day," Ferguson said. "It's the worst result in my history, ever. Even as a player I don't think I ever lost 6-1. That's challenge for me too."

It was Manchester United's worst home defeat since the 1930-31 season, when they were beaten 6-0 by Huddersfield Town amid a run of 12 straight losses in the First Division.

"I can't believe the scoreline. The first goal was a blow for sure but it was retrievable at 1-0. The sending off was a killer for us. We kept attacking when we went 4-1 down and we should have just said: 'We've had our day.'"

Ferguson felt the more experienced players in the team should have realised pressing for further goals was an unwise tactic.

"We just kept attacking. They were attacking three versus two. It was crazy football," he said. "I thought with the experience we've got - Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra - they would [defend more] but we just kept attacking. Sometimes there has to be common sense about it. It was a bad day."

He added: "What did concern me was the goals for and against. Goal difference may count. Last year it was in our favour. Most years it is in our favour. This time maybe not."

Despite his immense disappointment, Ferguson feels that the severity of the defeat could prove positive as the club will feel a strong determination to make amends.

"We'll come back. By January we'll be okay. We usually get the show on the road in the second half of the season and that will have to be the case," he added. "We've played all the teams around us and they have all to play each other so the second half of the season is important to us now.

"We will react, no question about that. It's a perfect result for us to react to because there is a lot of embarrassment in the dressing room and that will make an impact."

The scale of the defeat did concern Ferguson, though, as he looked ahead to the potential importance of goal difference as the season progresses.

PFA backs Tevez over City fine :lol

Without the union's sanction the punishment cannot be implemented. A two-week fine is the maximum which can be imposed without a club seeking permission from the PFA. It throws City's punishment for Tevez up in the air.

PFA chief Gordon Taylor has issued a statement that insists Tevez has been cleared of the accusation that he refused to come of the bench for Manchester City in the Champions League at Bayern Munich, and as such should not incur an additional two-week fine.

Taylor said: "If he had refused to play that would have been the charge and that would be gross misconduct. The charge was momentarily refusing to resume warming up. He never refused to play. He was desperate to play.

"They are trying to portray he refused to play, which is serious and why he was vilified. No evidence that they presented suggested that. If the evidence was strong and irrefutable, that's gross misconduct, as serious as it gets and could be a termination of contract.

"That's not the case. The evidence doesn't suggest that and that's why the charge was not of gross misconduct.''

IMO TBH FWIW Arsenal is back on track. They aren't supposed to be championship contenders this year with the losses of Nasri and Cesc. They're where they are supposed to be -- a mid-table team.

Those three home wins were a great starting point.

It really was a crazy game. I can't remember seeing a Chelsea team this bad defensively. They actually were worse than Arsenal, who at least put in a decent shift in the second half.
This second half was pretty good from Arsenal overall, as it showed how good a counter-attacking team they can be when Ramsey, Walcott and Gervinho are all playing well.
Let's hope this win will do this mentally frail team some good - and let's hope RvP stays, as he is in beast mode (even though his goals yesterday were pretty easy to take, well, the first two anyway) and the backbone of this Arsenal squad.

Arsenal, among other EPL teams, are always linked with Dortmund's Mario Gotze (http://arsenal-news.com/top-german-linked-with-arsenal-in-yet-more-transfer-gossip/1587). He's a 19 year old kid with a tremendous world class type player upside apparently. Honestly I don't know enough about German football. Would he be a great "get" for Arsenal? I also read that Arsenal sent scouts to see Lukas Podolski and that Arsenal is "ready to spend up to £20 Million" for him. (http://www.footylatest.com/arsenal-ready-to-spend-up-to-20-million-to-land-hugely-experienced-german/24935)

Can you tell me anything about these two players, if they're realistic options for the team and how would they fit in this Arsenal team? Should I just lay off the blogs and not believe everything? lol

What do you all think of Newcastle? They have been holding steady at number 4, getting good results. Best defense of the Premiere League? They have received only 6 goals.

You don't know about Podolski? He always seems to play well for Germany from the games I've seen, but I've never known a thing about his club career.

I don't know much about Bastian Schweinsteiger too, but he was a beast in the World Cup.

Beckenbauer said Mario Gotze is Germany's Messi (http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/news/newsid=1488395.html) but the stuff I've seen from him doesn't fit the bill, tbh.

country his good, but club he plays on shit teams or never exposed on tv to be marketed...

doesnt help much when most of germanys best play in germany but not a very exciting league to watch btw, and the 2 top teams is always filled with the NT squad players....hence most of them dont wanna play outside germany due to security, financial reasons and NT squad selection...

hence 20m is something arsenal doesnt have or else they wouldve bought whoever they were targeting b4 the deadline...mata for example

Goetze is a future crack. Podolski is good with the NT but he didn't succeed in bayern and went back to his former team (koln). 20M is too high for him. Scheiny is a world class midfielder.

My knowledge of the German team is lacking. Of the current squad, all I know about is Gomez and Ozil. I really should keep up to date with them.

So Gotze is Germany's Messi? Wow those are some strong words. The dude looks like a straight out kid and he is, he's just 19 and from watching his highlights on youtube, he does have impressive skills indeed. I just don't know how people tend to evaluate players that are really young and proclaim them to be the next *insert name*. We've seen those exclamations fail before in the past but this kid, he does get a lot of praise and managers are licking their chops for him.

Another player that is always mentioned for Arsenal but now all the EPL teams want him too is Eden Hazard.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2054038/PSG-offer-45m-Eden-Hazard.html

PSG wants to offer £45m for him. :wow

Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have all been keeping tabs on the 20-year-old forward for some time, while Premier League leaders City have also ramped up their interest with development executive Patrick Vieira recently sent on a scouting mission to watch Hazard.

But all that could be in vain with Qatari-backed PSG expected to offer £45m this January, more even than Real Madrid had been considering making available.

The play that led to the third goal by Tott was beautiful.
Yup

The opposing goalkeeper deserved better than the loss, though, he was amazing in that match

I guess it's hard to be into the German league when there's a few others that are better, and like someone mentioned, marketing/availability of games. I watched part of Bayern-Nuremberg this weekend and Sweinsteiger had a great goal from distance, he has a really powerful shot. Immediately after they commented on how much he scores and it was an alarming rate for a defensive mid. Of course he plays for Bayern Munich which happens to be way stronger than any other Bundesliga team right now, but he's a good scorer nonetheless. I was surprised to hear that he's only 26 or 27 years old, I thought he was closer to 30.

No way is Podolski worth 20mil to Arsenal, he's good, but not great. Outside Köln and german nt he's been average. He would be no upgrade over Walcott or Arshavin and that's a lot of money for a backup.

Bayern Munich is top 3 in the world right now alongside Barca and Madrid, imo.

Well, Arsenal were heavily linked with Götze this summer, and allegedly, they bid something like 20+ million for him.
Götze is an unbelievable talent; there hasn't been a player this talented (in his way) for a very long time in Germany. Getting him would be great for Arsenal, but I don't know if they will or would be able to get him (money, for one, but also the fact that there are other clubs more interesting and promising to go to than Arsenal these days). He played an unbelievable season last year (was probably even better than Cesc was at the same age), but has cooled down a little bit (as Dortmund have in general). But there is no doubt about his potential to be a world class player.

As for Podolski, I don't rate him that highly. He has always been good for the German NT, but the one time he played for a big club (Bayern Munich), it was pretty much a disaster. I wouldn't really want him at Arsenal (I don't think he would do good abroad anyway, he is very much attached to the region he is coming from), and 20 million would be ridiculous. He isn't worth that much, not even close.
