Mystery over Bridge bust up

December 13, 2011

By ESPNsoccernet staff

Chelsea and Manchester City players were reportedly involved in an altercation after their Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening.
Mancini on Clattenburg

• Mancini bemoans ref (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/995889/roberto-mancini-bemoans-clattenburg-display) :lol

It has been suggested by City boss Roberto Mancini that Chelsea players, high on emotion after a crucial win which reduced the gap at the top of the table to seven points, and in particular Ashley Cole may have been at the centre of the incident.
When asked what had happened, Mancini said: "I don't know if Cole said something. I don't know what he said. I don't understand. But if the Chelsea players are saying we are a top team, for us that is important. There were really lively because they beat a top team. It's normal. It's important for them."
Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas denied the claims about Cole, saying: "It is untrue, it is unfair. There is always some troublemaker in our wins."
Mancini also took the chance to take a sarcastic swipe at referee Mark Clattenburg's performance, with a series of questionable decisions including Jose Bosingwa's tackle in the box on David Silva not being adjudged as a foul. Chelsea were given a spot-kick for a handball by Joleon Lescott while Gael Clichy was sent off for two yellow cards.
"I agree with all of his decisions,'' Mancini said. "There was a big penalty. There wasn't a fan inside the stadium who didn't see it. But the referee was very close and he didn't.
"I don't know (about Chelsea's penalty). The Chelsea player shot very hard from five or six metres. It is difficult for the defender. But, at that moment, the referee was really sure. It was after the sending-off, that the game totally changed.
"It doesn't change anything for us, because we knew before this we should lose a game at some point. It is unusual that a team comes to Chelsea and plays like we did in the first half because we dominated the game. We didn't deserve to lose but we did.
"The season is very long and very hard. Now we should prepare for another difficult game, against Arsenal.''
Meanwhile, Mancini said he will take no action against Balotelli for breaking a 48-hour pre-game curfew by going for a curry in Manchester on Saturday night.

Well...at the end of the season they play each other, April 28. I wasn't aware that they're also playing on January 8 in the FA Cup.

I think United has better chances, if they stop losing players due to injury, to win this title. They simply know what it takes to win and I think they have the advantage mentally. City has been cruising at the top for a while now, they are under pressure to win a title after all of the big spending this summer, and United has momentum as they are climbing back to the top. The 6-1 victory was clearly a fluke win for City...United had a defender carded off and simply didn't play anywhere near their standards; Rooney was the only player that showed up that day.

Thierry Henry 'certain' to join Arsenal on loan, says Arsene Wenger

Thierry Henry will sign a two-month loan with Arsenal if insurance can be arranged with the New York Red Bulls, Arsene Wenger has confirmed.

The former Arsenal captain, 34, has been training with the club during the Major League Soccer off-season.

Gunners boss Wenger said: "For two months it certainly will happen. I don't take care of the agreement and insurance and that is not completed.

"We cannot announce anything [now] because the paperwork is not done."

With Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations in January, the Frenchman would offer back-up to captain Robin van Persie.

Henry is Arsenal's all-time leading goalscorer, with 226 goals in 370 appearances for the club before he moved to Barcelona in June 2007.

Wenger said: "To cover for two months is ideal. He has the experience and the quality. He knows the club and can help the players on and off the pitch.

"He has exceptional talent and is a very intelligent man. It can only be positive.

"He still has class, pace and quality. He is here to help the club he loves. But we must not put too much pressure on him, he is 34. He needs two good weeks' work. He is here to help - not suddenly be the main player."

The French forward does not have to return to the New York Red Bulls until March, which means he could feature in seven Premier League games, including key encounters against Manchester United and Tottenham, as well as FA Cup ties and the first leg of Arsenal's Champions League last-16 clash against AC Milan.

If agreement is reached with the Red Bulls, he could feature in Arsenal's FA Cup third-round tie against Leeds on 9 January.

Happy I missed this one.

The "best" thing was Squillaci heading it straight to Zamora for the second goal. You couldn't make that shit up ...
On the other hand, the goals once again showed how poor Arsenal are at defending as a team. Once a second or third ball comes back into the penalty box after a semi-clearance, they just don't know what to do and the overall positioning is really, really poor.
It also didn't help that Arsenal weren't able to put any pressure whatsoever on Fulham in the second half. This team isn't exactly made for defending a 1-0 lead.

They haven't had the back four sorted out for like 4 years now - they are fundamentally flawed in their defense. Dropped points like this is why I can't see them finishing in the top 4.

I didn't say MLS stars aren't leaving. In fact, go back to the Donovan Everton thread. One of said it was possible and one of us didn't even know MLS was on break. :lol:lol

NY has no reason to sell Henry. He's worth to them more as a player than anything Arsenal would want to pay. Of course MLS stars would rather play overseas in better leagues. That doesn't mean the ones under contract get that choice. Donovan is a great example. I'm sure he'd rather be playing for Everton but the Galaxy are better off keeping him than selling him for a few mil.

Geez, I didn't see the game live and I knew the Henry goal was coming since I read this thread beforehand but it still gave me goosebumps. From anyone out of the starters, he's already a better striker not named RVP. Walcott would have gotten that shot blocked, Ramsey would have sent that ball 200 ft into the stands and Gervinho would have danced around with the ball killing any moment and surprise :lol

Donovan played well against villa. Hustled everywhere and provided a perfect Xavi like through ball to find Anichebe for the goal. MOTM for me

I only watched the first half and all I remember thinking was that Landon left Barrett in the US only to go to Europe and deal with Saha blowing every set up with a bad touch or shot in the same way.

2 assists for Donovan in 4 games on a really bad Everton team. I'm happy he's succeeding.

Muser
01-14-2012, 07:28 PM
Yeah Everton wasn't the best club Landon could of gone to, they have the worst strikers in the EPL and that's saying something.

I'm surprised a team like Fulham didn't go for him. Him and Dempsey would have tons of chemistry.

Muser

Does he love L.A? He has the talent to play on a decent team somewhere in Europe.

MannyIsGod
01-14-2012, 08:37 PM
Landon has said that the only team he'll play for in the EPL is the Toffee's. I think if it was simply up to him he'd have stayed with Everton after the first loan but LA wasn't having that. At this point there's probably no way Everton could afford to buy him.

I'm a huge Galaxy fan but I'd not be the least it upset if Landon left for Europe.
