Police recover 145 guns from home of Michigan man after he attempted to shoot his wife

http://www.rawstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/michingan-man-800x430.jpg

Police in Michigan discovered 145 guns in the home of a man they took into custody after he shot at his wife twice following an argument, the Oakland Press (http://www.theoaklandpress.com/general-news/20151204/deputies-remove-145-guns-from-rochester-hills-home-after-man-shot-at-wife) reports.

John Lewis Piotrowski, 68, was jailed and charged with assault with the intent to murder, which carries a potential sentence.

According to authorities, Piotrowski was arguing with his wife when he told her he was going to kill her and grabbed her by the neck. The woman ran to the basement to call 911, only to have her husband follow her before pointing a small handgun at her and firing twice, missing both times. After he left her, she ran outside where she waited for police.

A deputy found Piotrowski standing in the front yard with a pistol in his possession when they arrived and took him into custody.

Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez, who was licensed to carry a concealed weapon, said she heard a scream and feared the incident was worse than a theft. She acknowledged the shooting in the parking lot was a mistake.

“I made a decision in a split second,” the 46-year-old Clarkston woman told a judge. “Maybe it was not the right one, but I was trying to help.”

Rochester Hills District Court Judge Julie Nicholson

said: “I don’t believe any malice was involved in what you were doing, but I believe you have to think about what could have happened.”

We’d like to say it is a truth we hold self-evident that shooting INTO A CROWD OF PEOPLE is not typically how we “help” people, but we live in America so everything about guns is completely broken.

Proof positive: this lady got probation. Probation. PROBATION. FOR SHOOTING INTO A CROWD OF PEOPLE AT YOUR LOCAL HOME DEPOT.

You will also be unsurprised to learn that her defense attorney is pretty sure the whole shooting into the crowd thing is a net plus.

Defense attorney Steven Lyle Schwartz called his client a “sharpshooter.”

“We need more people like Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez in our society,” he said.

S. Dakota man blames Obama after nephew is busted for illegally-modified guns and bomb materials

A South Dakota man was arrested on Thursday after police found 114 guns as well as bomb-making materials inside his home, but at least one relative insisted to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader (http://www.argusleader.com/story/news/crime/2015/12/11/pair-arrested-after-weapons-bomb-materials-found/77151830/?hootPostID=ae1dce6ee06e33ebba97e4826f73322f) that he was victimized.“They aren’t going after criminals; they’re going after guns,” said a man identifying himself as the uncle of 29-year-old Darren Kyle Zafft. “I blame Obama for this.”

Authorities also arrested 35-year-old Jennifer Marie Cash, who lived with Zafft. They were both charged with multiple counts of possession of a destructive device and possession of a controlled weapon.

The suspects also had around 10,000 rounds of ammunition, as well as grenades, and $20,000 in cash inside their home at the time of their arrest. Authorities executed a search warrant on their home after a neighbor reported finding a .22-caliber bullet casing inside their mattress.

between 15 and 20 of the guns found inside the home had been modified illegally.

Zafft was served with two protection orders in 2006, and served a one-year jail sentence four years later after being convicted on two counts of reckless use of weapons. He is currently being held on a $1 million cash-only bond.

slave/red state gun fellatin news

In Missouri, Fewer Gun Restrictions and More Gun Killings

Research by Daniel Webster (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11524-014-9865-8), the director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research, found that in the first six years after the state repealed the requirement for comprehensive background checks and purchase permits, the gun homicide rate rose by 16 percent, compared with the six years before. In contrast, the national rate declined by 11 percent over the same period. After Professor Webster controlled for poverty and other factors that could influence the homicide rate, and took into account homicide rates in other states, the result was slightly higher, rising by 18 percent (http://www.jhsph.edu/research/centers-and-institutes/johns-hopkins-center-for-gun-policy-and-research/publications/PTP-policy-brief.pdf) in Missouri.

New federal death data released this month for 2014 showed a continuation of the trend, he said. Before the repeal, from 1999 to 2006, Missouri’s gun homicide rate was 13.8 percent higher than the national rate. After, from 2008 to 2014, it was 47 percent higher. (The new data also showed that the national death rate from guns is now equal to that of motor vehicle crashes for the first time since the government began systematically tracking it.)

Other measures suggested that criminals had easier access to guns after the permit law was repealed. Professor Webster analyzed data from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and found that the share of guns that were linked to crimes soon after they were bought doubled in the state from 2006 to 2010. The portion of guns confiscated by the police in Missouri that had been originally bought in the state — ordinarily a very stable statistic — rose to 74 percent last year, from 56 percent before the law changed.

In interviews, researchers cautioned that causation is hard to prove, and that just because the gun homicide rate rose after 2007, it does not mean the repeal was the reason. Still, most of them were convinced that the data suggested an effect.

A few were not. Gary Kleck, a professor of criminology at Florida State University in Tallahassee, said he doubted Missouri’s permit law had ever blocked many criminals from getting guns. Gun homicides in California rose after the state banned one category of guns, so-called junk guns, he said, suggesting tighter laws were not safer. Professor Webster noted that the rise in California disappeared with more years of data.

Rigorous scientific research on universal background checks is sparse, in part because federal funding for it is practically nonexistent.

The changes tapped into profound differences between rural and urban Americans about guns. The state legislature is predominantly white, rural and suburban, but the effects of the laws it makes are felt largely in Missouri’s cities, where gun homicides are one of the biggest causes of death for young black men. In Professor Webster’s analysis, the gun homicide rate rose by 20 percent in metropolitan areas of Missouri, but was up by just 1.6 percent in rural areas. However, gun suicides, largely a rural, white problem, rose by about 16 percent (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0091743515002297) in the years after the repeal,

“There is this idea that law-abiding citizens’ rights are being secured,” said Richard Rosenfeld, a professor of criminology at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. “In fact, it’s the people most inclined to do harm whose privileges are being secured.”

Of all the gun law changes, the one that most affected homicides was the repeal of the permit law, Professor Webster argued. It had required any prospective gun buyer — even someone buying from a private seller — to undergo a thorough background check, in person at a local sheriff’s office.

Now buyers can apply for permits in stores, which send applicants’ personal information to the F.B.I. Gun control proponents say those checks are less rigorous than before, though gun rights supporters insist they are just as thorough. Buying from a private seller requires no check at all.

Good shooting, dad. Go buy some more guns, make your home even safer

==================

Police say the man thought his son had caught the bus for school Tuesday morning, but the teen returned home soon afterward.

Police say the man heard a noise in the basement and checked on it with a gun in his hand.

Police say the father fired after apparently being startled, hitting the boy in the neck.

Authorities say the father called 911 and the boy was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, where he died Tuesday morning.

25 States Will Let You Carry a Concealed Gun Without Making Sure You Know How to Shoot One

A state-by-state review of training standards shows that in nearly half the country, there is no universal requirement that applicants for concealed carry permits undergo so-called live-fire training.

Just 24 states and the District of Columbia include mandatory range time as part of their permitting process, while the remaining 25 have no such requirement in place.

(Vermont does not issue concealed carry permits at all.)States that do not mandate live-fire training include places such as Pennsylvania, where applicants must only meet a set of criteria (http://smartgunlaws.org/concealed-weapons-permitting-in-pennsylvania/) — a clean criminal record and mental health history, for instance — to be handed a permit. On the other end of the spectrum, in order to receive a permit in Kentucky, applicants must demonstrate their shooting ability by placing 11 of 20 rounds on a full-size silhouette target.

At least 8 million (http://www.gao.gov/assets/600/592552.pdf) Americans had an active permit to carry a concealed weapon in 2012, according to a report by the United States Government Accountability Office. A more recent estimate by pro-gun researcher John Lott places that figure closer to 13 million (http://crimeresearch.org/2015/07/new-study-over-12-8-concealed-handgun-permits-last-year-saw-by-far-the-largest-increase-ever-in-the-number-of-permits/).

“I have people who come to my class who basically couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn,” Rich Strohmeier, a firearms instructor in Fisherville, Kentucky, tells The Trace. “I think Kentucky is doing the right thing and everyone else is doing the wrong thing.”
“It takes 2,500 repetitions to pick up a pistol correctly,” he adds.

To compile a national breakdown of live-fire requirements, The Trace examined state statutes covering concealed carry licensing. When the language of a state’s law did not specify a training requirement one way or the other — some call for a basic handgun safety course but do not spell out whether that encompasses a live-fire component — we contacted the state’s centralized issuing authority.

Iowa Lawmakers Advance Bill That Would Allow Kids To Use Handguns

The Iowa House of Representatives passed (https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/pubs/sjweb/pdf2/2016/02-23-2016.pdf#page=14) a bill Tuesday that eliminates the age requirement for children to use "a pistol, revolver or the ammunition" with parental supervision.

The House approved the measure 62-36, according to The Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/iowa-kids-handguns_us_56ce4af9e4b0bf0dab30cae7?section=polit ics). It's sponsored by state Rep. Jack Highfill (R) and now moves to the state Senate.

Current law doesn't allow anyone younger than 14 years old to handle firearms.

State Rep. Kirsten Running-Marquardt (D) fought against the measure.

"What this bill does, the bill before us, allows for 1-year-olds, 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds, 4-year-olds to operate handguns," she told local television station KCCI (http://www.kcci.com/news/bill-would-allow-supervised-children-to-use-handguns/38143378). "We do not need a militia of toddlers. We do not have handguns that I am aware of that fit the hands of a 1- or 2-year-old."

Highfill told the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/02/24/we-do-not-need-a-militia-of-toddlers-if-iowa-law-passes-children-can-carry-handguns/) that the criticism was unfounded because the bill includes language that requires parental supervision with "visual and verbal contact at all times with the supervised person."

“Allowing people to learn at a young age the respect that a gun commands is one of the most important things you can do,” :lol he told the newspaper.

He added that otherwise, Iowans would turn 18 years of age "with no experience" in proper gun safety. :lol

The HI-FUCKING-LARIOUS GUNFAIL REPORT

TFW you shoot a theatergoer with the gun you brought to stop a theater shooting: GunFAIL CLXXVII (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2016/3/19/1471068/-TFW-when-you-shoot-a-theater-goer-with-a-gun-you-brought-to-stop-a-theater-shooting-GunFAIL-CLXXVII)

The week of January 17-23, where we last left off, had a few GunFAIL incidents that gained national attention, including the accidental shooting in a Renton, Washington, movie theater, ironically enough among the crowd assembled to watch the Benghazi-porn film 13 Hours.

Amazingly, that incident ended without a fatality.

I say it’s amazing not only because the victim in the accidental shooting was lucky enough not to be killed, but also because the shooter—who had brought his gun with him to the movies for fear of the threat of a theater shooter —

immediately fled the scene (http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/crime/suspect-in-renton-theater-shooting-says-he-feared-random-attacks/) during the initial confusion, so that he would not be mistaken for a theater shooter!

Which of course, he was!

He insisted on ducking the scene so that he wasn’t shot down by another “good guy” who’d brought his gun in order to exact instant justice on any potential theater shooters! Because, of course, his theater shooting was … different.

Your Favorite Fairy Tale Characters Now Have Guns Thanks To The NRA

The National Rifle Association has taken some heat this week after attempting what it saw as a family-friendly approach to to gun rights: inserting guns into classic fairy tale stories.

As part of its new family-oriented website, NRA Family, the organization reimagined popular fairy tales by arming the main characters with guns. The stories, which the NRA posted on its site and in the site's newsletter, feature illustrations and stories by Amelia Hamilton, a conservative blogger and author.

The first, published on March 17, is called Hansel and Gretel (Have Guns) (http://www.nrafamily.org/articles/2016/3/17/hansel-and-gretel-have-guns/),

http://d28qzpct869ua9.cloudfront.net/media/1535825/hansel-and-gretel.jpg?preset=article

a new spin on the classic Brothers Grimm story. Instead of being nearly eaten by the witch, the brother and sister duo rescue another boy with guns loaded. They then to return to their village and tell their parents, who storm back guns-a-blazing to capture the witch.

Another story published Friday is a take on Little Red Riding Hood called—you guessed it—Little Red Riding Hood (Has a Gun) (http://www.nrafamily.org/articles/2016/1/13/little-red-riding-hood-has-a-gun/).

http://d28qzpct869ua9.cloudfront.net/media/1535513/little-red-riding-hood.jpg?preset=article

It follows a similar narrative, with both granny and Little Red packing heat and using their guns to scare the wolf so he can be tied up and carried away.

"As they slowly began to feel calm, Red got her grandmother chicken soup and a cup of tea," the NRA version of the tale reads. "They sat in companionable silence, happy in the security that comes with knowing they could defend themselves."

Not everyone is thrilled with these reimagined tales. Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, called the series a "depraved marketing campaign" and called the stories "pathetic." "Make no mistake, this is a disgusting, morally depraved marketing campaign," he said in a statement. "The NRA continues to stoop to new lows in the hopes of shoving guns into America's youngest hands."

Man charged in accidental shooting at gun show

KTVB , 6:28 AM. MST February 09, 2016

GARDEN CITY -- A man who injured two people when he accidentally discharged a rifle while setting up for a gun show has been charged with a misdemeanor.

The charge - injuring another through careless handling and discharge of firearms - was filed against 74-year-old Robert C. Turner of Washington on Wednesday.

Turner was working as a gun show vendor at Expo Idaho when the shooting happened the morning of Oct. 31. According to the Ada County Sheriff's Office, Turner told deputies he was attaching a zip tie to the trigger assembly of a bolt-action rifle when the gun went off.

The bullet hit a 51-year-old man and a 64-year-old man in the leg. The 64-year-old went to the hospital, but was not seriously injured, the sheriff's office said.

If convicted of the misdemeanor, Turner could face up to six months in jail or a $1,000 fine.

The accidental shooting came just two years after two people were hurt when a gun discharged at a 2013 gun show at Expo Idaho. One man injured in the 2013 shooting lost his vision in one eye.

Ada County commissioners told KTVB in January that future gun shows at the venue are on hold while the firearms safety and security policies are reviewed.

Governor signs controversial ‘Church Protection Act’

Gov. Phil Bryant has signed into law the Mississippi Church Protection Act to allow churches to legally have armed security if they choose. Bryant signed House Bill 786 on Friday.

Bryant said in a Twitter post he signed the bill because “churches deserve protection from those who would harm worshippers.”

If someone were to use a gun to defend their house or worship, he or she would also be immune from criminal penalties.

Under the plan, ministries would (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/mississippi-church-gun-law_us_56fb4361e4b0a06d58040696) “train members to carry guns and act as security guards during religious services,” knowing that if they opened fire in defense of the church, they couldn’t be prosecuted.

During the legislative debate, one Republican supporter told (http://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/politics/2016/03/29/legislture-house-senate/82377376/) his state Senate colleagues, “This will allow a church to have a sergeant-at-arms to protect the church body, just like we have [in the legislature].”

Of course, ordinarily a sergeant-at-arms has a background in law enforcement.

And speaking of law enforcement, the Clarion-Ledger piece (http://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/2016/04/15/gov-signs-guns-churches-bill/83079790/) added that police chiefs in Mississippi were not impressed with the proposal.

The Mississippi Police Chiefs Association has express concerns about the bill, saying it will do away with a license to carry a concealed handgun in public and would put law enforcement and all Mississippians in harm’s way. […]

The Police Chiefs Association says the bill would lower the bar for who can carry a concealed, loaded gun in public to include violent criminals, some severely mentally ill people, and chronic alcoholics.

The Republican-led legislature and governor approved the proposal anyway.

Nevada Police Union Calls Fiore ‘Embarrassment’ For Gun Comments

http://a5.img.talkingpointsmemo.com/image/upload/c_fill,fl_keep_iptc,g_faces,h_365,w_652/gtxwok56qys10hrxo5w8.jpg

Nevada’s largest police union has come out against Assemblywoman Michele Fiore (R) for her recent suggestion (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/michele-fiore-point-guns-police) that citizens can take aim at law enforcement officers so long as police point their weapons first.

"Ms. Fiore, we no longer see you as a passionate advocate for your Second Amendment rights, which we support,” Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers Executive Director Rick McCann wrote in a letter to her office (http://mediaassets.ktnv.com/document/2016/05/27/NAPSO_FIORE_LETTER_1464371276154_39106404_ver1.0.p df?_ga=1.182677541.2079787872.1464381408). “Rather, these comments were utterly irresponsible, an embarrassment to your District and our State, and they continue to demonstrate why you are unqualified to hold the position of United States Congresswoman."

Fiore, a controversial advocate for firearm use who has called the Bureau of Land Management a “bureaucrat agency of terrorism,” is currently running for an open U.S. House seat in her state. Her role in brokering the end of the standoff by armed extremists at a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon earlier this year helped raise her national profile.

In an interview (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/michele-fiore-point-guns-police) in late April, Fiore told KLAS-8 that she “would never ever point my firearm at anyone, including an officer of the law, unless they pointed their firearm at me.”

“Now once you point your firearm at me,” she continued, “I’m sorry, then it becomes self-defense.

Whether you’re a stranger, a bad guy, or an officer, and you point your gun at me and you’re gonna shoot me and I have to decide whether it’s my life or your life, I choose my life.”

More Than 1,100 Non-Self Defense Deaths Involving Concealed Carry Killers Since 2007

Overall, Concealed Carry Killers documents 904 fatal, non-self defense incidents since May 2007 in 40 states and the District of Columbia, resulting in the deaths of 1,108 people.

Thirty-one of the incidents were fatal mass shootings as defined by federal law (three or more victims), resulting in the deaths of 147 victims. At least 19 law enforcement officers have died at the hands of concealed carry killers since May 2007.

“Concealed carry permit holders are supposed to be the ‘good guys with guns,’ but our research shows that far too often the opposite is true.

Permit holders don’t stop mass shootings, they commit them.

They don’t help protect law enforcement officers, they kill them.”

Because there is no comprehensive recordkeeping of deaths involving concealed handgun permit holders and many states in fact bar the release of such information, the examples on Concealed Carry Killers are taken primarily from news reports along with the limited information collected by a few states. Hence,

they likely represent a small fraction of actual events.

In the vast majority of the 904 incidents documented in Concealed Carry Killers (780, or 86 percent),

the concealed carry permit holder either committed suicide (399), has already been convicted (305),

perpetrated a murder-suicide (58), or

was killed in the incident (18).

Of the 93 cases still pending, the vast majority (81) of concealed carry killers have been charged with criminal homicide, four were deemed incompetent to stand trial, and eight incidents are still under investigation.

An additional 31 incidents were fatal unintentional shootings involving the gun of the concealed handgun permit holder.

The second-highest cause of pediatric death in the United States is firearms.

More children die from them every year than die from cancer and heart disease combined.

According to new research, even when adjusting for factors like poverty, unemployment, and education, rates of pediatric firearm deaths were markedly lower in states with strict gun laws.

In fact, states with the most lenient gun laws had twice as many pediatric firearm-related deaths.

Additionally, researchers found that states without child access prevention laws had death rates four times as high as states with strict gun laws. (https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2018-11/aaop-ham102218.php)

Few Laws To Address Growing Issue Of Elderly Gun Owners With Dementia

Red flag laws allowing for the removal of firearms from people with mental illness need to be widely extended to patients suffering from dementia,

the current lack of public policy

could lead to an increase in suicide and accidental shootings

among baby boomers and older adults, who have high rates of gun ownership and increasing risk for age-related dementia.

Researchers report that

older adults have the highest rates of gun ownership, with 27 percent of people 65 and older owning one or more firearms,

One study of patients with dementia or related mental health issues revealed 18 percent lived in a home with one or more firearms.

Of that group, 37 percent had delusions and 17 percent had documented hallucinations.

Firearm Ownership and Domestic Versus Nondomestic Homicide in the U.S.

Results

State-level firearm ownership was uniquely associated with domestic (incidence rate ratio=1.013, 95% CI=1.008, 1.018)

but not nondomestic (incidence rate ratio=1.002, 95% CI=0.996, 1.008) firearm homicide rates, and

this pattern held for both male and female victims.

States in the top quartile of firearm ownership had a 64.6% (p<0.001) higher incidence rate of domestic firearm homicide than states in the lowest quartile;

however, states in the top quartile did not differ significantly from states in the lowest quartile of firearm ownership in observed incidence rates of nondomestic firearm homicide.

Conclusions

State-level firearm ownership rates are related to rates of domestic but not nondomestic firearm homicide.
