Errors and Daye with a horrendous sequence

Denmon gotta be kidding. He took the worst shot I've ever seen
0% chance that he makes the roster.
And over-dribbled before taking that too. Could have passed it out to Daye.

That wasn't as bad as the pass to Daye that hit the rim.

Nice assist from Anderson to Denmon there.
Det baseline pass to the sliding shooter in the baseline by Anderson. A Spurs staple of which only Ginobili, Diaw and Parker can pull off.

OKlahoma is like 6th in the nation in meth lab incidents. The other 44 states are lower by a huge margin.
I'll accept those numbers without fact checking. It's a pretty terrible place. I'm just saying I never saw or heard much indication of it.

Yeah, he wasn't forcing anything. They were good looks. Just an ugly shooting night. If he can't knock down the three he's dead to me, but shooting is the least thing I worry about with him. As Chinook said, we know he can shoot. The rest of his game, outside the excessive fouling and one stupid turnover, he looked very good.

What I liked
DA running the team - the only one that can actually run the team and create for others. Some good passes and only one bad offensively play as far as I remember. He struggled defensively, but he had to guard Stauskas for most part of the game.
Daye in the post - Shot was off but he looked great in the post. Won't be able to do it against starters in the NBA, but he might against backups and 3rd string scrubs. Could help the team eventually.
Cotton creating for himself - he doesn't look comfortable running the team, but he looks good creating for himself. Can shoot off screens, off the dribble, 3s. He is a small SG much like Mills.
Didn't like the others. Denmon was easily the biggest disappointment. Selfish, terrible shot selection, can't run the team at all.
Can't even call Ayres a disappointment because we all know that he is terrible. SA is wasting a roster spot and money with him.

So Daye and Anderson were the only ones with multiple assists? Interesting.
Yeah. I know I sound like a broken record, but for a 7 footer (ish), Daye's got good ball handling skills. I was much more comfortable with the ball in their hands Daye, Anderson, Cotton or Morris. The rest not so much to look at. Blue had a moment or two. Others hit a few threes, but not a whole lot of basketball being played by the others.

Positives: Anderson's and Daye's poise. Both looked like NBA players from a mental standpoint.
Cotton's aggression: He knows timidity won't get him a spot on the team.
Denmon's defense: He struggled to start the game when it came to guarding his man. His help defense was fine. He made good rotations and even protected the rim.
Negatives:
Anderson's defense. It was never really good. Some of that was physical, but a good deal was lack of effort. He wasn't enough of a plus on offense to counteract his D.
Daye's shot: Hope it gets better. He's a natural shooter, so I think it will.
Denmon's PG skills: He didn't even try to run the offense.
Everyone else's defense.
Ayres.

Happy with Anderson, he didnt wanna do too much and played decent. He is slow but gets the job done.
Daye couldnt hit a 3 but those shots were open, so i expect him to shoot much better. Also his shooting form is a little different, probably worked with Chip.
Errors still cant catch the ball and for a 4 year vet he pretty much sucks.
Cotton was good. Played under control and did show that he can shoot.
Denmon is a ballhog and is inconsistent. For 5 minutes he looks pretty good and then the other 5 he sucks cause of his size. He dis play good D so thats a plus.
Thomas was there just to be Bowen on offense. He can shoot but didnt have the ball as much as last year.
Morris looked good, but he also looked good in the nba for the Lakers. To me he looks like Denmon just with better size and more athletic.

Kyle Anderson (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/2993874/kyle-anderson), San Antonio Spurs (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/sa/san-antonio-spurs) | Grade: B
Can Slow-Mo work in the NBA? Anderson enters summer league as one of the most intriguing prospects in Vegas. Watching him in his first game, you could see what you wanted to see. At times, he was a little slow to dribble by his man. At others, he found space and when he did that, he always seemed to find an open teammate. He made arguably his best play of the game driving baseline, pulling in a help defender and kicking to an unguarded Marcus Denmon for a corner 3. That’s Anderson: polarizing, but always fluid.
http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/69662/las-vegas-summer-league-day-1-standouts
^ Yeah I didn't watch until the end but he looked like a baller, especially early when they ran everything through him... The defense is a bit concerning but if he stays around that weight he's probably gonna be fighting with Beli for minutes so not exactly a DPOY battle...
Errors must have some mental issues, not sure if it's the name change or the move to SA but it's not normal for him to be so bad :(...
Marcus Bryant

Anderson will fit right in with the offense. He left a couple shots short last night, not sure if that was just nerves or a sign of something else. Definitely liked the poise and passing ability.
If not for the lack of roster spots I'd have Thomas down to take one of the IR spots.
Liked what I saw of Cotton. Not sure about Denmon, he killed the motion quite a few times.
Depending on what happens in free agency one would think the Ayres/Pendergraph experiment will end at some point.

By all means, look at one game instead of 14 games where he shot 41% from behind the arc. By your reckoning, Steve Kerr can't shoot. He went 2-12 one time from 3. Instead of making a bolded statement to show the conviction in your mathematics, how about a wager? I say that Daye shoots closer to 41% for the regular season from the 3 point line this year than he does to 17%, which is what he shot tonight, from the three point line. We take his regular season 3 point percentage, find the two differences, whichever is greater, loses. Let's make something good out of your irrational thoughts and feelings, namely profit for myself.

I know it's to be expected since it's SL...but the contrast between the basketball we saw in June and the basketball we're seeing tonight is unbelievably staggering. It really is amazing just how much better NBA players are compared to everyone else.
Well it helps to have played hundreds of games together instead of a couple of walk through practices, not to mention rookie nervousness.

A quick rundown of some of the things I saw last night. I'll give more info later after I re-watch the game, but this thread needs to go back up anyway.
Kyle Anderson
Kid looks every bit as much like Boris Diaw to me as the first time I saw him play. He's got really good court vision. Why they didn't have him bringing the ball up is a mystery to me. He had three assists in the first couple of minutes.
He's very physical. Whether it's going into traffic with the ball or mixing it up setting screens, he doesn't shy away from contact at all.
He's much quicker than I anticipated. He's got good feet and he can jump.
He's smart. He made some defensive errors, but you could see that he knew the second he did it. You can teach someone how not to lose track of a cutter if they have awareness. He also was directing teammates on defense, so he's got a good grasp of what's going on.
He'll struggle at times, but he looks like he has all the tools to turn into a good pro.
Austin Daye
They call Kyle Anderson Slo Mo, but Daye is the one who looks like he's going less than full speed. You can see that he has every physical gift you can get. If only he had a sense of urgency. ANY sense of urgency. Not in love with his decision making, and he's kind of a black hole with the ball. I can see why the Spurs (and all other teams) keep giving him chances, but he looks to me like a guy who only dominates inferior players, and the NBA doesn't have many of those around. If the Spurs find out a way to light a fire under this kid, they should bottle it and give a case to Ryan Richards.
Bryce Cotton
He didn't make a giant impact, but he won me over with his effort. If you put this kid in Austin Daye's body, he'd be an all-star. He's got a good motor, makes pretty good decisions with the ball, and he's absolutely fearless. He works really hard on defense too. His college career has taught him to be a shoot-first guy. It'll be interesting to see how he adapts as he gets to know his teammates.
Jeff Ayres
You'd expect an actual NBA vet to distinguish himself. Jeff Ayres did not.
More on the other guys after a re-viewing. I'll take better notes.

Thanks. I'm sure they want to see how Anderson looks off the ball. He's not likely to get to run the offense all the time, so is he decent on the wing, or not very good?

Between Denmon and Daye, the game ground to a halt, the shot selection was bad, and they went down double digits when he was away from the ball. Took Cotton coming in with the second unit to right the ship. Kyle got a pass in the second quarter on a foul and canned a toe-on-the-line jumper after the whistle. He's got a legit non-jumping jumper if someone will stop showcasing themselves long enough to pass him the ball.
Downside of summer league is everyone knows Anderson already has a job.

That's possible, but as CD mentioned, they used him in the Mills role in the game yesterday, and the ball never hit the rim when he shot. There might not be anyone better to step into that role.

This. I first complained, about not taking Bryce when we gave our last two picks away, but since we signed him anyway, its sort of like drafting him. He's a solid all around player who hustles, which fits the mold of the team. Kid can score, he's got the neal pullup (uglier shot similar result) but can also make a layup in traffic. He's unpolished and has some herky-jerky motions with the ball, but we need a player to score with manu and patty out. I think he fits nicely. I would like to see him develop a shot running off screens. There is no indication that he couldnt do it, since he can already create his own jumper off the dribble.

Hopefully Richards gets some good burn today. This is his 3rd Summer League. Clearly the Spurs want things to work out with him. It's unlikely that things will be different this year, but when you have a 7-footer with a decent skill set you will give him multiple chances.

I like Thomas much more than Anderson. I value court vision, but I don't overvalue it to the point I can ignore horrible defense and scoring ability.
Definitely not a good game so far for KA but the team as a whole has been pretty bad. Not as much passing compared to what we saw in the first game.

Summer league is a glorified pick up game. We aren't going to see Anderson's true value in these SL games. Just wait until Chip gets his hands on him and he becomes a part of the system.
This is very true. I feel pretty confident that Pop has seen all he needs to see from Kyle to know he has a special kid on his hands so far. No need to over use him at this point when so many other decisions on other players need to be made.
I think Ayers and to a lesser extent Daye need to show something, now and in training camp or they will be gone.

This game is the epitome of "live by the 3, die by the 3". I seriously don't think anyone on the court right now for the Spurs has heard of a mid-range jumper.

I don't hate KA, you can't teach iq, but right now, I think Thomas deserved that contract. Daye is garbage too.
