Why do they only consider a string of up to 12 transactions? Is that some sort of money laundering limit?

People tend to be lazy. If you want to hide 130,000 in a large organization, you get to that number really quickly when going by thousands.

Larger strings would also start yielding a LOT of false positives, as well as being computationally more challenging. The numbers involved are exponential functions, so adding in each additional transaction makes the computations MUCH harder, e.g. 2 to the 12th power, versus 2 to the 13th power for example.

Such a statistical analysis is valid. Read through it and it would be a good start. As an auditor, I would pull those transactions, and look at them VERY carefully.

If it was money laundering, that would be rather evident once you dig into the supporting documentation.
