I see both your points. Just kinda cracks me up when most will just vote for whom looks and sounds (prioritizes) their own demographic.
i gave that up a while ago. i wasted my votes prior and don't intend on participating any longer until i see a real candidate or i have to help stop the disease that is liberalism.

that's the problem though; we know AOC got her votes because of the dipshits in NY but trump wasn't ushered into office by rednecks only. you're fooling yourself if you believe such lefty talking points.
Yes he was he was ushered by toothless rednecks because they are the ones who voted. The other side didnt vote because of Shitlery
The main reason a moron like Trump won is because Hillary ran against him
You are fooling yourself if you believe otherwise

Are you white?
Clearly in the Western world liberalism doesn't prioritize whites (one could argue seeks to weaken) so clearly you are supporting your own. On the flip side I don't necessarily fault one of Mexican heritage that votes Democrat. Their argument that it's out of morality or "the best for America today" is a lie (until whites are no longer the majority)

Depends where you live an your business. Doesnt mean anything
We all know Trump won only because Shillary was so shit she was not able to convince Obama voters to go out to the polls. Had Obama ran vs Trump, Trump woulda gotten absolutely obliterated and embarrassed.
Again Trump won mostly because Shillary was such a bad candidate. No matter how you spin it that is the bare truth

These people deserve who they elect (she's nuts) - this war drives out corporations and rich people - and the loss of jobs (yikes!).
In Connecticut, "they've driven out all the rich people. California is doing the same thing. I know a lot of rich people who have left California," (Charlie) Munger added. "I think it's really stupid for a state to drive the rich people out. "They are old, they keep your hospitals busy, they don't burden your schools, police departments or prisons. They give a lot. Who wouldn't want rich people?"
C'mon down to Florida.

CA raised taxes, essentially no wealthy left
rmt suckered as always by rightwinghate media
Do millionaires really leave the state when taxes get higher?
For Republicans — and many moderate Democrats — income and wealth migration is not only a very real threat, but a problem that’s already upon us as Connecticut increasingly raises taxes to cover surging pension costs.
Among labor, urban Democrats and other progressives, however, the millionaire-with-a-suitcase is a myth, a fiscal boogey man used to scare liberals.
But despite the preponderance of stories of wealthy residents fleeing Connecticut,
the empirical evidence shows the rich tend to move less frequently than low- and middle-income residents.
The need for employment is still one of the main reasons people move
while home and business ownership — most common among high-income households — promote stability.

The right has obsessed over Ocasio-Cortez ever since she upended the Democratic establishment last summer. Conspiracy theories have emerged over her socioeconomic status (her clothes, childhood home, and even her public high school did not look poor enough, so she must have been lying about her working class background) and there has been extensive criticism of her dancing, how she's allegedly "not successful in real life," and her failure to smile.

:lol it's also funny that Republicans are frothing at the mouth to "blame" Cortez for killing the Amazon deal (because they fear her rising stardom and her message that resonates with many everyday hard-working Americans) when it was Senator Michael Gianaris who spearheaded the effort. Also, let's look at some of the facts here:
- Amazon refused to work with unions.
- City councilmen and congressional representatives are elected to represent their specific districts, so if Cortez's district was against the Amazon project, she's obligated to fight for that interest. The councilmen who reps the district was also against the project. This leads me to the believe the local residents were against it. And we have a poll to kind of prove it...
- 56% of New York voters statewide were for the project. But again, statewide. Of course someone who lives in Albany or Buffalo is going to be for it since they live far away from any repercussions the project might bring to the local community.
- Those repercussions can include rising rents and displacement of local citizens and small businesses.
- One of the councilmen said where the project might make sense for Scranton or Nashville, it doesn't make sense for Long Island City, NY. Why is this? Because New York is densely packed with an innumerable amount of options to live that never places you too many miles from where you need to commute. This means there was a risk that all those "25000 high paying jobs" would be living and spending their money in more "glamorous" places like Manhattan, while simply commuting to LIC for work. Meanwhile, the local community around the complex rots (due to speculative rising rents that would displace citizens).
- And it wasn't 25000 "high paying" jobs.
However, there was no guarantee that New Yorkers would be hired to fill a majority of the Amazon positions and half of the those jobs were not expected to be tech related.
"No guarantee New Yorkers would be hired." So this means Amazon could very well import many Chinese and Indian tech-workers on H1B1 visas (what happens in Silicon Valley) or at the very least import them from other places in the country. Meanwhile, the residents get the shit warehouse jobs. Anyhow, LIC's unemployment rate is 3.4%. It doesn't look the city really needs any menial jobs.

Cortez didn't lead the fight. And the councilman who represents that specific district was against Amazon building there. This leads me to believe the majority of his constituents were against it. And when you look up that district's economy, it doesn't seem to me they were hurting for Amazon.

Support of the affected district is relevant, it has nothing to do with whether it's AOC's or not. You don't like the speculation because it doesn't help your narrative. Statewide support is far less relevant than the likely non-support of those affected directly.

Support of the affected district is relevant, it has nothing to do with whether it's AOC's or not. You don't like the speculation because it doesn't help your narrative. Statewide support is far less relevant than the likely non-support of those affected directly.
The speculation is just speculation. It's irrelevant if it supports my narrative.
Statewide poll is more relevant than speculation of a district poll.

As I was saying:

Good. I'm glad predatory real estate speculators got fuckin' punched. Here's what the RMTs, Nathans, and Cowboys don't consider: Once Amazon would start building, real estate owners start raising the rent on locals and local businesses, fully intent on, say, driving out the local coffee shop owner in hopes a fuckin' Starbucks franchise replaces it.
Also, it's not guaranteed the surrounding local community would see an economic boost because the Amazon employees still have to spend money there, when in a city like New York, it's probable they would commute from outside the area. California is the same way, although not as densely packed. You have a major employer in a run-down area that people commute to, preferring not to live or really patronize businesses in the run-down area. And as often is the case, the run-down area gets even more run-down because real estate speculators, acting on the logic that the business coming into the area would boost its surroundings, buy up property and raise rent. Then when things don't go as planned, you have a bunch of vacant buildings in the area due to the real estate speculators sitting on the property until they can finally sell it/lease it for a profit.

So you saying all those 100+? cities vying for Amazon to come to their city are crazy? That this is the effect that a big employer brings? Because the area doesn't always neatly "gentrify" like logic says it would. There's these things called cars and trains that allow someone to live outside the area of their place of work. Combine this with the rise in online retail, and there's no guarantee the surrounding area flourishes with commerce. Then all that's left is a bunch of blighted buildings that real estate speculators stubbornly don't do anything with hoping something eventually happens that will allow them to sell/lease at a profit. This exact same thing happens all the time in California since we're such a populated state with many cities within 10-20 miles of each other, meaning if you build something like an Amazon in Stockton, CA (very run down city), they're going to live in whatever the nearest nicest city is and just commute to Stockton for work.
I don't know what that district's community supports, but I do know the councilman who represents the district was against Amazon. Councilmen usually have accurate reading of their constituents' collective pulse.

No. Just that not every city is created equal. :lol Of course Mayors are going to be foaming at the mouth to bring in Amazon, but Mayors don't unequivocally call the shots, which is why we have councilmen as a counterbalance. I don't see how she is radical when her ideas are either implemented in other countries successfully or have been implemented here successfully. I agree her GND timeline is unrealistic and aggressive, but I wouldn't consider being overly concerned about climate change (supported by a scientific consensus) to be "radical." George W. being overly concerned about Saddam having WMDs and being an existential threat to the US was more radical than anything AOC believes.

The tax loopholes the then rich used to get out of paying that tax rate doesn't discount the validity or morality of the idea. Also, from that article, fewer than 10000 households made enough money to fit in that bracket, so obviously being the "1 percent" didn't necessarily mean you were filthy rich. In today's economic climate, we have people worth over 50 billion dollars. Also, the whole scare tactic of "well, the rich will just move!" doesn't fly because if the rich just moved, they would lose proximity to the largest consumer market in the world. Walmart just can't pack up their thousands of stores and move them to China or Europe, which are less flourishing consumer markets. Nor would they want to. Same with Amazon.

Exactly, the biggest tax “loophole” used in the 50s was making less money since money earned in the top bracket was going to be the government’s money. There wasn’t a class of oligarchs at the time with more wealth than the bottom 70% of the country. The result was a much stronger middle class that created the consumer demand needed for a good economy that wasn’t fueled by bubbles the way the post-Reagan American economy is fueled.

Online shopping is extremely "green". You don't like that?
I don't see how that's possible. To buy a widget from a brick-and-mortar, the transportation chain involved might look like: shipped to distribution hub, shipped to store, I drive (less distance than the typical Amazon warehouse is to me and in a more fuel efficient vehicle) to buy. Online retail model: Shipped to distribution hub, shipped to fulfillment center, delivered to me. Then you add in the additional packaging online retail requires.
However, with e-commerce, every retailer is expected to deliver directly to its customers. The order size is one product instead of thousands, with smaller packages and faster delivery. On top of this, the internet provides 24x7 availability, which compounds this supply chain even further.
As a result, vehicle footprint increases, leading to increased carbon emissions, air pollution and generally detrimental to health. The increased emissions also affect climate change.

So now you recognize the 50s is irrelevant. You use the 50s as the standard of this tax rate working but highlight the limited amount of people that this actually affected.
The tax loopholes are relevant when you point tio the 50s as evidence high tax rate is successful.
We have have people that earn 50 billion. Most of the mega rich end up donating their wealth. Plus focusing on the mega rich ignores the fact that the upper middle class is growing and the poorest class is shrinking.
No Walmart can't move their stores. The rich can move. High taxes can also discourage successful people from bringing their talents to the US. The largest consumer market in the world wasn't built with punishing taxes. Innovation isn't the fruit of the tree of taxes that punish success.
EU welfare states failing despite living off the US has some relevance to a comment clamouring about high taxes and free healthcare.

bachelors definitely aren’t worthless. A lot of places require bachelors degrees, it really doesn’t matter the field. They just generally require a bachelors. Obviously some degrees are better than other such as CS, EE, ME etc
financial aid is a hell of a thing ya know? actually i paid half and i got the degree for my mother, not myself. i feel like it was a waste of time tbh but whatever; i love my mother so yeah.
either way, show me where a degree would help me in the field i am in. i'll wait...

RW Evangelicals: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a Witch or Controlled by Demons (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/2/16/1835266/-RW-Evangelicals-Alexandria-Ocasio-Cortez-is-a-Witch-or-Controlled-by-Demons)
RW evangelicals who have been spewing some really insane crap through their media. The attacks have have increased on AOC since she began talking about the Green New Deal , which RW evangelicals believe is demonically inspired, because Socialism.
Intercessors for America president, Dave Kubal, after conducting an interview with Republican Rep. Jody Hice of Georgia during a monthly prayer call, went on a delusional rant about witches in the heart of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's District (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/dave-kubal-prays-against-the-witches-and-diabolical-power-operating-in-alexandria-ocasio-cortezs-district/):
“It’s been
widely publicized (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/religious-right-issues-another-urgent-call-to-prayer-to-fight-anti-trump-witchcraft/) that there is a coven of witches that cast spells on President Trump 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
This particular coven is found in the southern portion of New York City.
He added that the southern portion of New York City also happens to be where the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York sits, :lol
which is where the case involving Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, was overseen (https://www.ajc.com/news/judge-michael-cohen-case-described-nonsense-judicial-equivalent-teddy-roosevelt/NTEIvl2N3ZlcPu7KAJpG9K/) by Judge Kimba Wood.
Kubal then noted that Wood had officiated the wedding of George Soros in 2013 (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-soros-wedding/billionaire-soros-weds-consultant-in-third-marriage-idUSBRE98J0XZ20130922), :lol
and that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was in attendance at the service. So, right in the middle of all of this, the southern district, in the middle of where these witches are doing the 24/7 spell-casting,
we find the territory of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” Kubal added. “Her district is in the center of all of this going on."
the political agenda promoted by elected officials like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders is “of the devil.
“It is God’s fight, folks.
This is not our fight, this is his fight.
He wants America free.
He doesn’t want it under the bonds of socialism and communism. :lol
He wants men to be free to worship God. That’s Satan’s theology,” he continued.
“Bernie’s theology is of the devil.
Ocasio-Cortez’s theology is of Satan …
This is a spiritual war, folks.”
he declared that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has “demonic connections” and is doing the bidding of “the demonic realm.”

No, the highest earners still paid significantly more than 37% in the taxes in the 50s, just that weren't as many high earners (>200K) back then. The gap between the 1% and the 99% was a lot closer. And even still, according to your link, the 1% still paid 42% in taxes vs. 36% today. This isn't merely a 6% difference. It's about a 19% difference. And the top .1 percent paid 50% in taxes, which is a 26% difference. The top .01 55%, which is a 36% difference. This is by no means "small." So, the 1950s tax structure isn't irrelevant.
:lol Who are all these multibillionaire oligarchs that have donated their wealth to charity? The only people who've put their money where there mouth is are Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. Paul Allen was the most recent billionaire to pass, and (googling), I don't see any plans for his estate to wind up in the hands of a charity. But let's look and see how much these generous, brilliant, self-made men donate to charity:
Jeff Bezos: 0.1 percent.
Charles Koch: 1.5 percent
Larry Ellison: 2.4 percent
Mark Zuckerberg: 2.9 percent
David Koch: 3.0 percent
Larry Page: 4.0 percent
Sergey Brin: 5.9 percent
Michael Bloomberg: 10.2 percent
Bill Gates: 22.2 percent
Warren Buffer: 71.1 percent
https://www.forbes.com/pictures/59d5055e4bbe6f37dd9ff693/1-warren-buffett/#7d364f495dae
The national average is about 3%. The bottom 7 conform to that average, with the top 3 being the only outliers. A study also found that lower income people give more of a percentage to charity than higher income: https://www.csmonitor.com/USA/USA-Update/2014/1006/US-poor-and-middle-class-give-more-to-charity-but-wealthy-pull-back
The rich can't move their on paper profits from their stateside businesses. I wrote about this concern in a previous thread:
Anyhow, I think the American masses hold more cards here vis a vis the proposed tax increases on the rich since we, collectively, are by far the biggest consumer market in the world. I don't think the threat of, "Well, if you excessively tax Bezos et al, they'll just close up shop and move to Hong Kong" has a realistic chance of happening because no way would they want to lose access to this market. We're talking a consumer market almost the size of China and the EU combined. Americans aren't going to wait 2 weeks for a delivery from Amazon fulfillment centers in Hong Kong. "Well, maybe Bezos cuts a deal with Mexico or Canada?" Still a comparatively long shipping time. Some competitor will just take the 70% or whatever marginal tax hit and replicate Amazon's business model domestically, undercutting Bezos. This basically means while Amazon corporate HQ might be located off-shore to avoid paying taxes, Amazon would have no choice but to have a US headquarters (which would be the biggest Amazon arm) that would have to pay taxes regardless.
Same logic applies to Walmart, McDonalds, Apple, Microsoft, etc. You can say, "Well, every time a corporation sees a drop in revenue, which a 70% tax rate would definitely cause, they counter by cutting labor costs through layoffs and outsourcing." There will come a point where that tactic backfires since if you strangle the average American's purchasing power to that extent, it translates into reduced consumerism, meaning reduced profits. You can look at the data and see that the rising tide that truly lifts all boats is when the average American has more disposable income.
We can look at the different income tax rates between states as evidence. California has the highest in the country, Texas has none, yet I don't see Silicon Valley packing up and moving to Texas. You'll probably bring up the meme of all the Californians moving to Texas frustrated with our "commie state," but boiled down, California's GDP growth was 3.0 percent in 2016-2017 to Texas' 2.6, and from 2013-2016 (this was the supposed peak of California to Texas migration) California ranked number 1 in GDP growth.
"Middle-class moving into upper class." Referring to that graph in your sig? We can arbitrarily define what is middle, lower, poor class all we want, but the cold hard fact is that the national median income average is about 60K. If median income growth kept pace with inflation over the last 40 years, the median average should be about 90K. Culprit? Tax Cuts. In 1979 the inflation adjusted median family income was 48,000. At the end of St. Ronne's tenure, it was about 51,000. See this inflation adjusted graph and how the Reagan tax cuts killed the trajectory:
http://static1.1.sqspcdn.com/static/f/173103/1717455/1215732354537/122407_0123_TheRecessio1.png?token=aQuk4SSP%2F5gQI w1ImpS7NqvlaRY%3D

Your other premise is that everything is broken because income didn't continue to rise at the same rate as it did following ww2. You that was going to continue forever? Nothing in America has changed but Reagan tax cuts.

Carnegie and Rockefeller donated significant sums of wealth. Just 87 years after Rockefeller died his 100s of billions has been reduced to 10 billion across his large family. 3 billion being tied up by 1 individual who was CEO of a bank.
Gates plan on donating virtually all of his money.
Most of Bezos wealth is tied up in Amazon. It seems he plans on using his wealth to invest in space. So ultimately another big plus for society.

IMO, Bezos is not like say Google - it's all about domination for him, spreading those ever wide tentacles. Google wasted their big advantage earlier doing more "pie in the sky" stuff - like worldwide internet access for the good of humanity. Amazon just kept chugging along, operating at a loss and infiltrating every possible area it could. I remember back in the day when Amazon was only a book seller - I would buy old textbooks (I actually still have complete sets [student and teacher editions and solution manuals] of all of Dolciani's math texts from Algebra 1 thru Pre-Calc) and re-sell other books when finished with them. Shucks - more anecdotes - there is always putting me on ignore :-)

Okay, then we'll look at GDP per capita with considers per person wealth growth:
https://aneconomicsense.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/distributional-shifts-1917-2010.png
Red line is the overall GDP per capita growth in the United States. Look how up until 1980 all the income groups grew together at an almost identical rate. Then post-1980, the growth for the wealthiest much outpaced the bottom 90%. That was the beginning of the Reagan tax cuts, obviously, but some other key events and business philosophies took hold over this time, namely the SEC under the Reagan administration making stock buybacks legal and the shareholder primacy concept.
When a big corporation receives a generous tax cut, they don't allow it to "trickle down," they use it to buyback stock, which gives a boost to share price. Quick reads on this practice: http://money.com/money/5267940/companies-spending-trump-tax-cuts-stock-buybacks/, https://www.forbes.com/sites/aalsin/2017/02/28/shareholders-should-be-required-to-vote-on-stock-buybacks/#33c060556b1e
For most of the 20th century, stock buybacks were deemed illegal because they were thought to be a form of stock market manipulation. But since 1982, when they were essentially legalized by the SEC, buybacks have become perhaps the most popular financial engineering tool in the C-Suite tool shed.
Big corporations operate on the philosophy of shareholder primacy. Their main concern isn't jobs, ethical business practices, social betterment, but making as much money for their shareholders as they can, which they are bound by law to do. Labor costs tend to be pesky to the bottom line, which is why corporations try to short-change labor anyway they can. https://www.forbes.com/sites/petergeorgescu/2018/01/03/shareholder-primacy-threatens-our-constitution/#36a81e573304
I would maybe warm up to economic libertarianism again if stock buybacks were made illegal and corporations started acting more ethical (the latter is a pipedream, though). Warren, Sanders, Cortez's message resonates for a reason, and it's not out of "envy of the rich," like the right wing talking heads claim. When you have a single person growing their net worth by 100 billion over a decade, while the blue collar and even white collar workers in that guy's company are only seeing wage growth barely keeping pace with inflation or negative wage growth, it pisses people off.
:lmao so you’re talking about this shit and had no fucking clue where the HQ was actually located? Fucking retard :lmao

Yes. You should be familiar with the particulars of the situation instead of just having the simplistic opinion of "big business bring jerbs=gud." I've explained to you and others that I've seen similar situations as these play out in California, a densely populated state with a variety of living options, where the company's new existence didn't play out like it theoretically should have.
Then you add in the additional packaging online retail requires.
https://www.varsity.co.uk/science/9086
You (and everyone else who needs something) drives to a physical store (which may or may not stock that particular item) clogging the roads, malls (expensive real estate instead of giant warehouses) plus their employees (instead of assembly line machines) vs tall, white Amazon delivery trucks/UPS dropping off packages in one area. Seems (to me) much more efficient (and greener) the Amazon route - especially the comparison/stocking part.

Another study contends that shopping online has a greater impact on the environment, when considering the following factors:
Many people do not drive alone, but go shopping with others, hence total purchases average more than four items per trip, thereby reducing miles driven per item.
Shoppers often engage in other activities while at the mall, so miles traveled can’t be assigned only to shopping.
A lot more goods purchased online get returned, which requires repackaging and shipping (33 percent compared with just 7 percent from stores).
Online products often require a whole lot more packaging. You can also simply bike or walk to the store, or drive a very efficient car, any of which beats online shopping in terms of environmental impact.

Is my understanding of the timeline of the deal incorrect? Did 200+ cities not put forth their offers and did Amazon not choose NYC's offer? How much more negotiation is there at that point? Certainly not the $3 billion. If the NY side can't get their offered deal through whatever local authorities, is that Amazon's fault? I'd think that if the governor of the state and the mayor of the city offered me a deal, I shouldn't have to go check with the local officials. Isn't that the responsibility of the governor/mayor who made the offer?
There are binding agreements and non-binding agreements. Whatever offer was made was clearly non-binding. That’s it and that’s all.

:lmao believing Amazon spokespeople. Jesus Christ this lady is naïve. For the umpteeth fucking time rmt, the local community DID NOT WANT THEM THERE. Do you understand the role of a city councilman or not? They are elected as the voice of their wards, so if he was inundated with calls to block the deal, met with locals to learn their opinion about the deal, and found a majority negative response, it's his duty to act in that interest. If he broke with the will of the people, we'll see him voted out in the next local election. In my experience, councilmen usually have a good read on the pulse of their constituents, as many of them can hold office for a decade or more.

Since it was a non-binding agreement, that leads me to believe Cuomo didn't consult with the councilman who reps that ward. Probably said, "Come on down! They're gonna love you down there. Ah, don't worry about Van Bramer and Gianaris, they'll play ball."

Furthermore on the Amazon deal, people are acting like it was a done deal, and Boogeygirl jumped out of the shadows last week to protest it, when:
http://oi66.tinypic.com/30lfdw0.jpg
The day after Amazon's announcement, the Senator and Councilman who both rep the district protested it. Then they held over a month's worth of public hearings to explore the details and gauge public opinion. We can conclude from this sequence of events that the public didn't want Amazon there.

I think I'd rather believe an Amazon spokesperson about why Amazon pulled out than OCA's tweet.
Again, :lol believing Amazon spokespeople. See ^^^^ the timeline I just posted. Over a month's worth of public hearings were held to discuss the details. Guess what you can do at a public hearing:
This hearing is open to the public, and we invite you to attend, however we will not be taking public testimony at this first hearing. We will have a separate hearing entirely devoted to hearing from the public at a later date, where your comments will be made part of the official public record.
https://council.nyc.gov/amazon-hearings/
Looks like when they held those open floor hearings to gauge public feedback, it was majority negative.

My response was to Pavlov - so isn't it Cuomo's (NY side) that dropped the ball? Not that Amazon didn't want to/afraid to negotiate?

I’d say both. Cuomo/de Blasio were retarded for not knowing the political climate of the area and how the locals would react, but it’s very clear that Amazon had no interest in negotiating and were only going to build HQ2 in a city where the public officials would bend over for whatever Amazon wanted.
Thank you for the timeline. Cuomo and Blasio should have included the state senators/representatives/local councilman/etc. in the original offer. Weren't they taking various polls during this timeline showing that majority favored Amazon coming? Sounds like Cuomo/Blasio were tone deaf to locals or going by polls or ignoring public hearings (which I think are hard to judge - people opposing are always VERY vocal compared to those who are in favor who probably don't attend but poll).

Statewide polls only. 56% in favor, but obviously, people who don't live in the district would be more for it since it's win/win. Yes, vocal people should win out. If supporters couldn't get off their asses and go to city hall to counter the arguments of opponents, then that's their problem.

I actually think it wasn't stupid, and I don't particular agree with AOC on most things.
The Berlin wall was, in fact, immigration control. There were two Germany back then, fully recognized as two different sovereign states. The biggest difference, clearly, is that the Berlin wall was built to keep people in, not out.
Nevertheless, it was a shameful construction that had desperate people willing to risk their lives to overcome it. Frankly, it became a symbol of it's own in the Iron Curtain times.
Now, I'm not in favor of illegal immigration or trafficking, I just find it incredibly dumb that simpletons buy that a medieval deterrent like a wall is more effective than the technological sophistication the US has to counter such a problem.
The reality is that it hasn't been solved because there's no political will to solve it. Good steps have been taken to bring it at the lowest it's been in a long time. We also discussed actual effective means to do that, like EVerify, etc, but those options are seemingly never on the table.
And so, we're pursuing the shameful symbolic wall instead, really for no other reason that it was campaign promise. Cost or efficiency be damned. It's stupid.

Anyone that has ever been to a US/Mexico border town that has any common sense realizes that drones, sensors, and "technology" can't possibly stop people, drugs, guns, etc. from easily flowing back and forth. In Texas, the towns are literally continuous, with houses and buildings running right up to the river on both sides, and by the time the Rio Grande gets to Texas it's not much of a river or a deterrent to crossings. And yeah, I just got back from checking on a big job in Laredo about an hour ago, so I have seen it recently.
I totally agree we don't need barriers in many sections further west because the terrain and lack of population and roads on either side is a significant deterrent, and drones and sensors would work just fine.

I go there every year. Heck, I cross to Mexico sometimes (was there last December). They probably catch just about the same amount in the checkpoints inland, which if you have ever been there, you know what I'm talking about.
The point being that walls are there, and they haven't stopped shit. Your bang for the buck is definitely on drones, scanners, border cameras, sensors, personnel and things like EVerify, which close the gap at the other end, which is demand. You're still going to need all the tech whether you build a wall or not, because we all know a wall hasn't stopped a willing intruder in a millennia.
