Not sure who you're referring to, my opinion is much closer to El Nono's opinion than the "majority opinion" you're referring to.

The dream is certainly to have a better life. But the reason why qualifications are arbitrary is that about half of those coming and stay illegally are not extremely poor, illiterate people. They have enough money to pay for an airplane ticket and a tourist visa (both of which seem cheap to the average American, but are a steep price in third world countries), passed a Dept of State background check, so we’re not talking exactly bottom of the barrel here.
Then they come here and realize they need to start from the bottom, washing dishes, flipping burgers, and head back (unless they already have family that can put them in a better situation). So there’s a varied demographic here, despite the rapists and felons rhetoric.
EVerify exists and is implemented, the main reason it’s not widely enforced comes down strictly also to economics. Things like farm jobs are already under huge pressure on competivity (tariffs didn’t help that), to the point the government has to subsidize them (sometimes to hire these illegals).
Unfortunately Washington and Business doesn’t want to have an honest conversation about this, and thus neither do we. That is the true immigration problem in this country, and if the power brokers are not interested in a fix, then there won’t be one.

True. When was the last time you heard a politician on either side mention enforcing everify? I use it with all new hires. It's great for catching child support dodgers too. I register a new employee and two days later I get a letter from the Texas attorney generals office telling how much to hold out of their check and mail to Austin.

ICE prisons are big business.
The Daily Beast with the goods:
Being in the U.S. illegally is a misdemeanor offense, and immigration detention is technically a civil matter, not a criminal process. But the reality looks much different. The Daily Beast reported last month that as of Oct. 20, ICE was detaining an average of 44,631 people every day (https://www.thedailybeast.com/ice-is-imprisoning-a-record-44000-people), an all-time high. Now ICE has told The Daily Beast that its latest detention numbers are even higher: 44,892 people as of Dec. 8. Its budget request for the current fiscal year anticipates detaining 52,000 people daily (https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/DHS%20BIB%202019.pdf)
The differences between for-profit immigration prisons and public immigration prisons are substantial, according to recent research (http://americanimmigrationcouncil.org/sites/default/files/research/the_landscape_of_immigration_detention_in_the_unit ed_states.pdf) by Ryo and colleagues based on data from fiscal year 2015. Even though for-profit companies operate only an estimated 10 percent of ICE detention facilities, both Ryo and the National Immigrant Justice Center found that more than two-thirds of all detainees have been held at least once at a privately run prison. Those for-profit prisons “consistently and substantially” hold immigrants longer than public ones—about 87 days on average for people ultimately granted relief, versus 33.3 days in public prisons.
https://img.thedailybeast.com/image/upload/d_placeholder_euli9k/dpr_2.0/c_limit,w_585/fl_lossy,q_auto/181221-iceprisonprofits3_embed1_ftzi2h

Winehole23
12-28-2018, 02:57 AM
Pinning down the size and scope of the immigration prison industry is obscured by government secrecy. But the Daily Beast combed through ICE budget submissions and other public records to compile as comprehensive a list as possible of what for-profit prisons charge taxpayers to lock up a growing population, and how many people those facilities detain on average. The result: For 19 privately owned or operated detention centers for which The Daily Beast could find recent pricing data, ICE paid an estimated $807 million in fiscal year 2018.
Those 19 prisons hold 18,000 people—meaning that for-profit prisons currently lock up about 41 percent of the 44,000 people detained by ICE. But that’s not a comprehensive total, and the true figures are likely significantly higher.
Winehole23
12-28-2018, 03:00 AM
Providing a comprehensive tally of ICE detention centers is difficult. The Department of Homeland Security claims ICE operates “nearly 250 (https://www.oig.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/assets/2017-12/OIG-18-32-Dec17.pdf),” but a study earlier this month for the American Immigration Council (http://americanimmigrationcouncil.org/sites/default/files/research/the_landscape_of_immigration_detention_in_the_unit ed_states.pdf) found 638 sites, more than twice the DHS figure. ICE told The Daily Beast it uses 205 facilities, citing information on its website that immigration researchers consider incomplete and misleading. Separating out the privately run facilities is even more difficult, since some of ICE’s state and local partnership prisons are run by for-profit companies, and complete lists are frustratingly difficult to find. In response to The Daily Beast’s queries, ICE said it could not provide a full breakdown of contractor-operated immigration prisons.

No use reporting them. An illegal with no driver's license driving an uninsured car tried to exit 35 going about 90, lost control and took out about $8000 of fence and totaled the car at my property downtown. SAPD responded, took the guys name down (at least, what he said his name was) gave him a couple of tickets and let him drive off with a friend. When I asked the cop about the damage his response was "you have insurance, don't you?" SA is a sanctuary city.

Sorry, CC - that sucks. Here in Miami (I think Hialeah is #3 and Miami #4 most expensive auto ins cities), there are so many uninsured motorists that we have to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (and at same limits as liability) in addition to normal liability, collision, etc.

The 2006 study by the Texas Comptroller suggested illegal immigration is a net economic benefit to Texas.

That's horrible!
I know of a guy who committed fraud on his taxes for years, laundered money - billions - through a foreign bank, lies every day to the American people and he holds a prominent public office- and he is a free man - as we speak!
He even made up a charity where he would take millions of dollars and fooled the donors into thinking these funds were going to sick children!

That's what politicians do. They flip, they flop, they pander. The Democrats can't pimp the homeless because they see no vote volume from them so they pimp the impoverished and the morality police.
Hillary Clinton is a racist bigot who loved the KKK, was anti- gay marriage and one shady character to say the least, and she was the face of the Democrat party post-Obama. That's just how politicians are and how forgetful the average American is.

There was a time when this would have only been covered on local news. The idea that every (rare) murder committed by an illegal immigrant needs to be huge national news is a fairly new one driven by the partisan, narrative-driven cable news era.
Confirmation bias is good for ratings.

This is actually only partially correct. Mitch can use the nuclear option to end debate and bring it to a vote. He’s done so before on Gorsuch’s nomination and Reid before him.

I think that it's because there's no more election for 2 years (nothing to hurt), a new House come New Year when the current House bill goes away and 3/4? of (most essential parts of) govt funded (again not really critical) - now's when he can most put up a stand (for his base) with little to lose. He could offer DACA/amnesty for all and that wall will never happen - they hate him so.
So you’re saying he’s holding all government workers hostage over his pet peeve to please a minority of voters? It actually sounds like a terrible political move.

It’s just a senate rule. It can be used to pass any kind of legislation, however, just like dropping any other procedural barrier, it could backfire when the GOP finds itself again in the minority.

you've lost your fucking mind and you're running on pure unadulterated emotions. dems want illegals to just be waived in as legal; that's what the whole daca bs is about. it's not about legal immigration; it's about allowing a huge number of illegals to instantly skip the lines who are already benefiting more than most american citizens atm.

Haven't you been paying attention? I already said the wall isn't going to happen. Nope, I'm not going to stop supporting Trump or blame him (over this) - the blame (as I see it) is on (some of) the spineless cowards called republicans in the Senate - they never wanted the wall. If this funding is something that could have passed with 51 votes, then they are to blame. If it needs 60 votes (which it seems like), it was never going to happen - short of DACA and amnesty for all (which would never have been offered).

Eh, this whole "wall" bullshit is just Trump childishly picking a fight because he needs his waning Trump University supporters to focus on a shiny object and ignore what a complete failure he is on everything. He and the GOP whiffed and quit on healthcare. Fiscal responsibility went out the window with the tax cuts and debt is ballooning at levels not seen since the recession. The tariffs have failed, made life harder for U.S. businesses, and have been a reason for uncertainty in the market. Kim Jong Un played Trump like a fiddle and got some nice TV time to sign a vague, meaningless document that both guys took a victory lap on. Mattis got the hell out and tried to use his best words in his letter to kindly say Trump is a fuckin idiot similar to Tillerson. Never mind the Mueller and NY investigations. Trump campaigned for 3 weeks on the boogeyman caravan story and immigration issues with Fox News working as his propaganda machine and covering the caravan 24/7. He even threw troops on the border for extra drama. The results in the midterms? 40 House seats lost, many in Republican strongholds. Arizona, ground zero for immigration issues, flips blue for the first time in nearly 3 decades. Translation: voters told Trump to shove the wall up his ass :lol What else can he do at this point besides pick a fight in an attempt to keep the focus off a really fucked up administration?

Border Patrol fires tear gas AGAIN after 100 caravan migrants try to cross over from Tijuana to San Diego on New Year's Eve
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6544833/Border-Patrol-fires-tear-gas-caravan-migrants-try-enter-New-Years-Eve.html
Did you even read the article?:
The Department of Homeland Security accused the 'violent mob of migrants' of initiating attacks against U.S. border agents.
'Shortly thereafter, migrants began throwing rocks over the fence at the CBP agents and officers.
'Border Patrol agents witnessed members of the group attempt to lift toddler sized children up and over the concertina wire and having difficulty accomplishing the task in a safe manner.
'Agents were not in a position to safely assist the children due to the large number of rocks being thrown at them.
'To address the rock throwers assaulting agents and risking the safety of migrants attempting to cross who were already on the U.S. side, both smoke and minimal countermeasures were deployed.
'Agents deployed smoke, pepper spray and CS gas to a position upwind of the rock throwers and south of the border fence.
'The deployments were not directed at the migrants attempting entry on the U.S. side or at the fence line.
'The rock throwers were located south of the fence, in an elevated position both above the border fence area and the incursion attempt.
'These countermeasures successfully suppressed the rock throwers causing them to flee the area.
'No agents witnessed any of the migrants at the fence line, including children, experiencing effects of the chemical agents, which were targeted at the rock throwers further away.
'Once again we have had a violent mob of migrants attempt to enter the United States illegally by attacking our agents with projectiles,' DHS spokesperson Katie Waldman said.
'As has happened before - in this and previous administrations - our personnel used the minimum force necessary to defend themselves, defend our border, and restore order.
'The agents involved should be applauded for handling the situation with no reported injuries to the attackers.
'Initial reporting indicates that once the attempted illegal entry was thwarted by agents, the mob began pushing women and minors to the front, forcing minors to climb dangerous concertina wire, and encouraged conveniently invited media to begin filming their illegal acts.

Legal immigrants would be allowed to send back monies under the plan.
Illegals would not.
Thus a cottage industry would be formed, with Jose Legal sending back money for Pedro Illegal.
However, fights could break out when Pedro claims the money intended for Maria never got there.
Novellas could be written on this. The many twists and turns of the money. Actresses, actors and film industry people could thus be hired. Creating even more economic stimulus.

Trump DOJ cares so much about the link between immigrants, terrorism and sex crimes that it's willing to lie about the statistics:
One flaw the Justice Department acknowledged was the report’s assertion that between 2003 and 2009, immigrants were convicted of 69,929 sex offenses, which “in most instances constitutes gender-based violence against women.”
But, Allen said in his letter, “the alleged misrepresented data constitute mere editorial errors which the [law] does not obligate the agencies to withdraw or correct.”
Still, he added, “the department appreciates being made aware of such errors so they will not be repeated.”
Berwick said the errors were “not merely editorial.” The nearly 70,000 offenses spanned a period from 1955 to 2010 — 55 years, not six; the data covered arrests, not convictions; and one arrest could be for multiple offenses, he said, citing the Government Accountability Office (https://www.gao.gov/assets/320/316959.pdf), which provided the underlying data.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/justice-dept-admits-error-but-wont-correct-report-linking-terrorism-to-immigration/2019/01/03/cd29997a-0f69-11e9-831f-3aa2c2be4cbd_story.html

“We are monitoring or keeping track of the wrong metric. It is not how many miles of wall that is going to keep us safe. Are we keeping bad guys and are we keeping drugs out of our country? The best way to do that is with technology and manpower. Building a wall from sea to shining sea is the most expensive and least effective way to keep the border secure.”

DHS presents a PowerPoint on the ‘crisis’ on the border full of false, fear-mongering claims
The only existing immigration crisis was created by the government.
https://i0.wp.com/thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/GettyImages-1089834816.jpg?w=1280&ssl=1
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), however, reportedly (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-meeting-today-with-republicans-democrats-in-situation-room-as-shutdown-continues-2018-01-02-live-updates/) interrupted the presentation,
titled “A Border Security and Humanitarian Crisis,”
after they objected to what was being discussed.
Nielsen tweeted that she was “disappointed” Democrats did not want hear from DHS about
the “security and humanitarian crisis” of “criminal aliens” at the border. :lol
it is easy to see why Pelosi and Schumer chose not to participate in Nielsen’s briefing.
It utilizes inflated numbers to justify its fear-mongering rhetoric about immigrants.
the first slide, the only way to address
the influx of “drugs, criminals, gangs, and terrorists”
coming across the U.S.-Mexico border is to build a physical border wall.
DHS cites data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that suggests a dramatic increase in the amount of illegal drugs seized at the southern border. According to the data, 1.7 million pounds of narcotics were seized by CBP in FY18.
CBP’s own website (https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/stats/cbp-enforcement-statistics), however, shows substantially lower figures —
only 47,945 lbs of cocaine, as opposed to 282,000 lbs, and 67,292 lbs of methamphetamine instead of 248,000 lbs. :lol
CBP’s website also shows that these
drugs are arriving in the U.S. through ports of entry,
meaning Trump’s multi-billion dollar
wall along the border will not prevent illegal drugs from entering the country.
The presentation also reflects the administration’s ongoing effort to
label all Central American immigrants as gang affiliated.
According to the PowerPoint, 17,000 adult migrants with “existing criminal records” were arrested by CBP last year.
labeling all 17,000 immigrants as criminals is a lie by omission (https://twitter.com/ReichlinMelnick/status/1081228379842588672), considering the number could include individuals whose only criminal infraction is illegal entry into the U.S.
etc, etc

Nah, Trump had a 12 year plan for 1.8 million "dreamers" and Chuck/Nancy (basically the same entity) told Trump to go fuck himself.
The White House threatened to veto the bipartisan amendments in a telephone briefing with reporters, calling the proposal from the so-called Common Sense Coalition dead on arrival. A White House official also said they were requesting that Senate offices withdraw their sponsorships of the plan. The bipartisan amendment, backed by Sens. Chuck Schumer, Susan Collins, and others, would have provided a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants benefitting from DACA and $25 billion for border security.
In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security condemned the Collins-Schumer plan as "an egregious violation of the four compromise pillars laid out by the President's immigration reform framework."

In fact, illegal immigration costs taxpayers a staggering $134.9 billion a year while contributing only $19 billion in state, federal, and local taxes.
