Problem for the Astros is after it's tied up 2-2 tonight, the Nationals still have road field advantage even though tomorrow's game is still @ WAS.

I don't get why the Astros don't just go over the Charmin soft salary cap and just bring back Cole? Who cares if you have to pay a luxury tax, it's worth it if it means staying at the top instead of falling back into mediocrity. You're talking paying 9 figures in a 13-figure industry... and winning is far more important than money, tbh.

I was not pleased with Hinch going to the pen so early. IMO, he could have used Urquidy for at least 1 more, if not 2 innings. U only threw 60 something pitches and was almost masterful.

Great. Another one of these boring games where one team races out to the lead early and the trailing team will predictably respond with a litany of strikeouts and pop ups. This theme has defined this pretty uneventful post-season.

I don't mind nobody teams making it, but the games themselves have been dreadful outside of a few good ones (Game 5 of the NLDS, the Altuve walk off, Game 1 of the WS). We love post season baseball because of the improbable rallies and comebacks. I blame pitching. Just too good. You give a Gerritt Cole a 4 run lead and it's basically over 99.9 percent of the time. Pitching has taken a huge leap in just the last 3 or 4 years, with how they use high speed cameras, data, etc. Manfred is too much of a weak willed chickenshit to do anything about it, though. I would like to see the game rebalanced to where an Ace's ERA isn't in the low 2s or high 1s, but around 3 to 3.5.

One of the worst umped games in recent memory, all favoring the Astros. I'm not hating on the Astros, but many of those calls prevented the game from being closer and thus more entertaining. If he was going to call that a strike, the pitch to Correa that preceding the homerun should've been called strike three, as well.

I don't think they switched balls. Air is cooler this time of the year and even if the ball is different, I don't think the MLB or anyone can have that precise control over manufacturing tolerances of a handmade product made from leather and string. I think the ball is travelling 4 feet less, per the Cardinals research, so yeah, you'd need tolerances on the level of 1 percent. My concern going forward for the future of the sport is the hits-to-strikeout ratio further increasing and the comeback factor reduced because of that. I looked at some past playoff seasons, and comebacks from 1 run deficits occurred about half the time in most cases. Last I looked for this post-season, it was about 30 percent. And it'll only get worse if strikeout dominant pitching continues its pace.

Manfred is limp wristed, though. I dislike the modern chuckball NBA, but I can respect that the league knew what kind of game the majority of their fans wanted to see and came down hard with rule changes like the very next season to make it happen. It alienated fans like me, but I'm no longer the NBA's core demo. Baseball has some pace of play issues, ball in play issues, strikeout issues, but Manfred continues to twiddle his thumbs. It's frustrating, because the solutions are so simple.

I'm in the same boat;

I appreciated 90s ball and early-mid 00s Spurs and Pistons ball. That's what I grew up on. D'Antoni's Suns were fun as hell to watch when they were the anomaly, but that style now being the norm across the NBA makes me sick and has ruined the league for me.

There's was nothing wrong mid-00s NBA. The league just panicked after the Spurs/Pistons did abysmal ratings and blamed the defensive, low scoring nature of that series for the ratings. When in reality it was because both teams are relatively small media markets. And that era allowed for different styles to exist. The Kings, Lakers, Mavs, Spurs, and Suns all played different styles of basketball. The Kings should probably have a title. And the Suns were a legit threat to the Spurs who simply choked and shot themselves in the foot with the Amare/Diaw situation. You can't play a different style in today's NBA. If you're not shooting around 36% on 30 plus three point attempts per game, you have no chance at contending.

Fantastic post.

Mavs actually had the ugliest style in the league after they went from Nash/Nelson to Terry/Avery and went to isoball with Dirk, Josh Howard and Stackhouse.

Early 00s Kings were more like the 2014-18 Warriors offense imo than any other team, Bibby just didn't have quite the shooting % of Curry but similar styles and players overall. Deep team and a ton of motion, cutting, off ball screens and slick passing. Screwed over by the refs and league multiple times. And then the injuries hit and that franchise hasn't seen anything good since. Sad.

Spurs were obviously ran through the inside-out with Timmy alternating with the drive-and-dish with Manu and TP, with consistent elite defense and sometimes hot-and-cold offense which made us a great comeback team but also prone to losing some significant leads.

Suns were a solid defensive team in the Marbury years but then converted to the perennial run-and-gun powerhouse when they swapped him out for Nash. Still a decent defense in terms of DRtg per 100 possessions, but the offense made them special.

Lakers of course were a triangle which meant running the offense through the ball-dominant wing (Kobe) in the high post.

I liked the variation of style, pace and tempo of that era as well. 70% of the battle in those games was about which tempo would carry the day. Obviously when the Suns played the Nelly Mavs or Warriors it was a free-for all and Spurs-Pistons or Pistons-Pacers was always a slugfest, but those inter-style games were great as well. The mid 00s was a great era.

I totally agree with you now that there's just no distinguishing styles anymore as everyone has become a variant of the 14-18 Warriors with the same monotonous gameplan. It's not fun anymore. Coaching these days means very little and the inmates (players) are completely running the asylum now more than ever... both in the game, and even in general management/transactions. As for the game itself today... very little strategy, it's more like a game of War instead of poker.

I don't think this is Houston in the bag at all. Sure, at home their chances are good and i favor them. But if Strasburg kicks ass and Verlander gets dinged enough to pull it off, the atmosphere completely changes. I don't think Cole can or should give it a go in 7. Greinke may well end up being critical either way.

The math of the 3 pointer is just too powerful for styles to diversify. League 3 point attempts are even higher this season. We won't see something like the 4 down Spurs face off against the SSOL Suns anytime soon

that and the NBA's dumb rule changes calling ticky tack fouls for everything even a long way from the basket, and resetting the shot clock to 14 instead of 24 after an offensive rebound also artificially inflates scores.

But this carrying it to 1b. WTF is that all about? I thought maybe he was going to collect it for future sale or keepsake. But then that could easily be done back in the dugout. MLB thinks it will increase viewership. You see it in their advertising "we play loud". They add the young angle to try and not make it so race based. Hey, America is turning brown and assuming people of similar skin color will be drawn to that isn't a bad gamble. I personally would stomach the NFL/NBA product more if it were whiter.

But I think it is short sighted if MLB doesn't also expect the increased controversy that comes with it. Whether it be bringing social awareness or just more arrogance on & off the field. Earlier I clicked on ESPN1 "Black QBs Wahoo" and then ESPN2 "Irving wouldn't be judged this way if he were White". Click and click. MLB avoids this stuff and keeps me tuned in. Dunno how much longer that will last though. Eventually the brown players will out number whites and then we will be forced to "be aware" of their struggle and their social/cultural norms etc etc

My take is Bergman and his banty rooster attitude is stupid. You do not do that. You act like you been there and Do Not Piss Shaq off. He pissed off his opponent off and that did his team no favors.

Put your head down and run around the bases and celebrate in the dugout.

:lol Why? In our past discussions about race, I've explained how nonsense of a concept it really is, and that skin color is merely a surface phenotypical trait just like height, hair color, and eye color. At the fundamental genetic level, you might be closer to Lebron James than to Gordon Haywood. Maybe your problem is cultural? I personally don't like aggressive urban rap culture that has come to define the NBA, and to an extent, the NFL. Doesn't mean I don't like "black culture," as I have a great affinity for the Blues, Jazz, Soul, and Funk, and some forms of Hip-Hop, but shit like trap music and its culture is garbage. I seriously doubt you'd have a problem if the MLB was filled with Tony Gwynns and Fred McGriffs. Or the NBA filled with David Robinsons.

And yes, I do agree modern media stokes this shit by making EVERYTHING about race, digging for any racial angle they can find. It's what unfortunately gets clicks and twitter followers today.

I would say people are naturally "culturalist." Europe warred over cultural differences for a 1000 years, despite everyone being "white." I'd be rather be friends with a black guy into Jazz and who had the personality of David Robinson than with a person "who looked like me" that acted like Chief Keef.

There is a debate in European circles whether it is better accepting migrants with cultural or racial similarities.

Your post is correct but I imagine the modern black athlete would label those players you listed as uncle toms. Players today have more financial and social freedom. I personally tend to be turned off by this but there are plenty of people that love this "empowering".

The main problem to me is that black players feel pressure to assimilate to the cultural majority (which we both tend to dislike). So the line between racial and cultural is blurred. You have outliers such as Travis Kielce but guys tend to fall in line with their racial norms.

:tu Thank you for saying this - I often make this point in conversation as well. Race and culture are so conflated in the minds of many. Someone might even incorrectly think of themself as racist, when really what they discriminate against is culturally propagated behavior.

Unless they hit mega bombs, there is no way.

Stros gotta go for the HR now.

It's a 2 run lead, not an 8 run lead.

Yep. And Cole has to be the guy in the 9th. He has all winter to rest his arm. Plus the Astros might not even re-sign him, which would be fucking stupid.

Even if the Astros go on a successful rally, You're looking at maybe tying it.

He should be fired after this disaster tbh. Not that it's all his fault since he didn't leave all those baserunners on.
