Harper has finally signed, so the official 2019 MLB season is underway. Baseball crew report in: Robz4000, lefty20, AlexJones, Chris, AlexJones, FrostKing, Reck, djohn2oo8.
Some quick rundowns.
-Kershaw is battling injuries. Hasn't yet thrown a ball this entire spring. Is he finally done?
-Rockies signed Arenado to a huge extension.
-Padres have a stacked infield, great farm system, but probably lack the pitching to make any real noise this season.
-Despite the Phillies acquiring Harper, Braves still faves to take the division.
-Pitch clock is working well in spring training.

I got Rangers are the bottom of the division that the Astros will easily win. Red Sox will probably win the American League; they have a really good prospect at 3B (what a surprise)

Yeah. That division has zero threats to the Astros. I think the A's were a bit of a fluke.

Red Sox and Astros are gonna run the AL again this season; not sure who wins in the rematch.
NL is more of a crap shoot with all the young talented teams on the rise. Only call is that the Doyers won't be back in the WS and I don't think the Cubs will be there either.
Winner between Red Sox/Astros wins it all, just like last year.

Indeed. Would like to see Tatis cut down his K-rate. Was about 30% in the minors. Compare that to Vlad Jr's 14%.

I'm expecting an MVP season from KB but Cubs' aging pitching core doesn't inspire much confidence me. I expect Brewers to take a step back since 80% of their roster exceeded expectations last year, especially in September where they won at a 119 win pace. Cardinals scare me a lot more.
It doesn't look like we ever see the old Kersh again. Can't be a good thing if the guy is struggling to show up to ST at 100% health after having an entire off season to do just that.
Division races between Cubs/Cards, Sox/Yanks & Braves/Phils should make for some good regular season drama.

I reflect back on Alex Rodriguez signing with the Rangers. Few ideas
- Mariners were a 91 win (ALCS) team in Arods final season, far cry from the current Angels. But Mariners actually improved after the 25 year old Rodriguez left
- Trout is 27 and already 6 seasons in the league. 0 career playoff wins and 1 career playoff hit. In comparsion Arod had 3 quality playoff series under his belt
Angels had little choice but to resign Trout as a big market team but this illustrates a significant problem in this sport and I worry what occurs when Acuna hits free agency.

Trout is once in a generation, even lifetime, so Acuna probably won't command as much. Even then, baseball really is all about your farm system, so if teams develop correctly, they can take the hit of losing a star in free-agency. Example is the Nationals. They lost Harper (who is admittedly overrated, but is still a superior talent who will more than likely find his form again) but developed this Soto kid, who will be the new face of the franchise going forward. With the Dodgers, as Kershaw declines, we have Walker Buehler ready to step in the lead ace role. Thankfully baseball isn't like basketball where losing a top 5 player can set a franchise back decades, since individual players don't have the same amount of impact on team success. Not to mention the NBA's developmental system (i.e. NCAA to "learning on the job") is a joke.

welp, got my answer. Asmus is just as stooped as Skosha.
Runs very hard to come by, we get Babe Trout to draw a walk in a 2-1 game top of 9th. Next dude singles to get Trout over the 3rd base.
So now, down 2-1 with men on 1st and 3rd. But super fast Trout on 3rd base for the tie.
Basically just hit the ball on the ground and don't get doubled up. Instead Ausmus is gonna stick with...….drumroll...….Pujols.
Phucker strikes out.
Situation just screamed for a batter that can make f-ing contact and not be slow af getting down to 1st.

Maybe they should throw an offer at Keuchel? Yeah, it's probably not a hangover. Sale's velo has reportedly dropped off by a bit. They have enough offensive firepower to compete, though. Still early. Last season, the Dodgers looked like absolute trash for like the first 40 games before hitting a stride.

Because I have been f'd out of many a "Tied after 1st inning" wager when ESPNs chart has clearly showed strike 3 to end an inning which was called a ball. I don't mean right on the line I mean well in the strike zone.

Tampa always starts off strong and fades down the stretch. Minny has a good team and should challenge for a postseason spot. Philly has a lot of good young pieces to go along with Bryce Harper, but prolly don't have enough to challenge the Braves (don't see anyone in that division getting a WC with the NL Central having the Brewers/Cards/Cubs).

Why TB, Minnesota, and Philly doing well? Haven't been following any of it besides checking in on the Angels a bit.
Tampa Bay won over 90 games last season and has shaken up the league some with their opener tactic (they use a reliever to pitch the first/second innings. Angels are starting to use it some, too). They also have a very good rotation. Charlie Morton, Blake Snell, Team ERA and runs allowed is the lowest in the MLB. They're also getting contribution from players like Yandy Diaz and Brandon Lowe on offense.
Philly was a bubble team last season, and got better during the off-season, acquiring JT Realmuto, Jean Segura, and Andrew McCutchen (who seemed done, but has been worth 1.0 WAR this season). Harper has yet to pay dividends, though.
Twins are hot offensively, leading the league in OPS. Probably not sustainable.

Yup, much like his 2016 self. Generating weak contact and letting his defense finish the job behind him. Iirc, he was among the leaders in lowest avg exit velo allowed that year. It helps that the Cards came out very aggressively and swung a lot in early counts.

Yeah, hopefully pitchers like him don't become a dying breed since MLB scouts/front offices are obsessed with swing and miss power pitchers. It's why Keuchel still isn't signed. Another weak contact pitcher. Just as in the NBA where modern shooters have mastered the 23 foot distance, 60'6" doesn't really challenge modern pitchers. I think next year a minor league is going to experiment with moving the mound back.

As it should be. The catch prevented a walk-off and was different than your usual robbed home run catch in that he climbed the wall and reached way over to make the play (that wall is 7 feet high. Bradley's arm was probably 11+ feet in the air). What's conceptually different about a late goal than a walkoff win (two of those happened today, too) or late basket to win the game?
:lol And how is the American public "punished?" This match will draw higher ratings on Spanish television, so it's more like the illegal immigrant public are being punished.

Cubs with two walkoff wins in a row, yet the American public is supposed to flip their shit about a late goal in the 7th most popular sport in the country in a non-American tournament between non-American teams? We see late game dramatics on the daily. I'm not hating, but context is everything. I seriously doubt Damian Lillard's 37 foot game winner made any top play highlight in the UK or Germany.

lefty20. And JoeTait75. Maybe the worst pitch in Indians' history? Just don't get Miller shaking off slider there on a 1-2 count. Here's a past his prime vet who hasn't played in 3 days, he was early on the sliders, meaning he would be timed for the fastball, and why locate anything anywhere near the zone in a pitcher's count? Only reasons I could see for Miller going with a fastball was that he either didn't feel comfortable with his slider right then, perhaps spooked by Ross's swing on the second pitch (even though Ross admits he didn't see it, from a pitcher's perspective, it can look like he just missed it) or he was trying to get cute and catch him looking, thinking Ross was looking slider.

In general I'm a believer that under most circumstances you should not throw a hittable pitch on an 0-2 or 1-2 count. That's one you either waste or throw out of the zone and try and get the batter to chase. As far as this AB goes, I'll speculate that Miller was gassed at this point, maybe not locating the slider to his satisfaction and didn't want to extend the AB and throw more pitches than he had to. Francona really rode Miller hard during the 2016 postseason and he just didn't have much left by Game 7 of the WS.

Today how short pitchers go sure put that runner on. I still remember David Cone going 130+ deep against Griffey & the Mariners ('95 ALDS). He was the biggest nibbler I can recall, always walking into jams but quite successful getting out of them. In contrast the Braves never walked. Preferred to throw a pitch in the zone and rely on the defense behind them.

This is exactly what he was trying to do. Hell, CJ's first appearance back from AAA was with Cubbies nursing a 1 run lead against the Marlins. He's trying to project confidence in the kid to get him going. Sucks that it backfired, but I don't mind Maddon taking the chance. This is why baseball>basketball. If your team scouts and develops right, you can have a "lottery pick/future star" routinely coming to the team. Whereas in the NBA, you have to sit with your tongue out hoping the ping pong balls bounce your way or that one of the league's best 5 players signs with your team. Kawhi's leaving, for instance, set the Spurs back probably a decade or more. Losing Bellinger would hurt, but it's nothing the Dodgers couldn't recover from relatively quickly, since their farm system is always among the best in baseball. Individual players just don't have the same impact in the sport, you can't "force feed" Mike Trout at bats, for instance.

Don't see why not, but what might be giving them pause is how well Brantley is playing. Maybe move Brantley or Reddick to the DH. Since the Stros are rolling, tough to just throw in the there, as rooks sometimes have a tough string of games before they find a groove. Or he could be like Riley for the Braves. Be interesting to see what they do.

Mets @ Dodgers 8-5 late.
Dodgers where trying to choke off a lead when batter raps a deep fly to right.
Did you guys see combo of Mets runner who failed to extend the correct arm/hand to be nailed at 3B + the uber slacker runner who tagged up at 3B and strolled home so slowly he failed to cross the plate before the former got nailed at 3B? Unreal.
And I had the Dodger on the last game of a 3 team parlay so I was loving the no score. :rollin
Ya mid Jansen is just not the same. Still very good but he has been unclutch many times the past few years. Got away last night but that was with the huge assist from the two Met runners. Not taking away the great throw by right fielder but I mean cmon, bad slide plus slacker runner and it's 8-6 men on 2nd and 3rd. Mets have issues.

Yes. There are far more different paths to a MLB title than NBA. When you get a young player with great potential it is an amazing feeling knowing you can pencil them in 125+ times for the next decade. Part of that is great players (not superstars) tend to remain at the same team for a while. In the NBA it seems to be the opposite as superstars are locked in while the 2nd tier guys bounce around. Signing a Trout or Arod doesn't even guarantee you a playoff spot in MLB
The climb out of the MLB gutter feels tougher but once you reach Top 6-8 in each League status you can usually coast for good number of years and are right in the thick with a shot - Astros or Dodgers are not as insurmountable as NBA elite teams

These are blurbs from the e-mail the Angels sent me:
The Angels selected North Carolina State shortstop Will Wilson with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. The 21-year-old has made his name by barreling balls, showcasing his ability to hit for both power and contact after slashing .335/.425/.661 with 16 homers and 57 RBIs in 2019. He hails from the same school as Nationals standout Trea Turner.
Los Angeles rounded out the first day by selecting another shortstop, Kyren Paris out of Freedom High School (CA). At just 17 years of age, Paris was one of the youngest prospects taken in the opening rounds but is still seen as one of the higher-regarded shortstops. He is projected to develop into a four-tool threat, with his biggest strength being his speed.
Will Wilson Scouting Report School: North Carolina State (NC)
Year: Junior
Birthdate: 07/21/98
Position: SS
Bats: R
Throws: R
Height: 6' 0"
Weight: 184 lbs.
Scouting Report: He has a high floor as a steady up-the-middle defender with surprising power. He has quick hands and deceptive strength that give him at least above-average raw power. A right-handed hitter, he has a knack for putting the barrel on the ball.
More in depth on their website: https://www.mlb.com/angels/news/will-wilson-drafted-by-angels-at-no-15-in-mlb-draft
I wonder about the reasoning behind drafting more SS when we starting pitching is something we've needed and we have a competent young SS in place. I'm not saying it's a bad thing in the long run; but this reminds me of my Vikings just never drafting OL (til recently) year after year when that was clearly what Adrian Peterson needed to be super dominant and stop getting met in the backfield. And to say nothing of protecting the QB.

Teams usually draft based on who is the best overall player left rather than need. It's not a big deal, since if you develop him, but don't need him, you can trade him for need, much like the Sox trading Moncada and some other prospects for Sale to White Sox.

I can live with that as long as they're not skipping SP on thin margins. Trading for young upcoming SP is hard to do. I also assume Angels will be finding some good stuff in rounds 3 and 4.

Seems he was shot in the back, but thankfully the bullet exited cleanly, so his body wouldn't have absorbed the force. Last status was stable condition, but reported by the DR media. So take it for what it's worth.

Hopefully Braves don't peak too early. Starting pitching is still inconsistent (Fried might be sent down) and bullpen stinks. But I think we have a couple trade deadline deals in us so strengthen these weaknesses. Markakis has also been poor for an extended period of time now - at the age of 35....
I was surprised the front office pulled the trigger on Keuchel, I thought Kimbrell was the higher probability. But maybe they simply preferred the financial rental instead of 2-3 year commitment.
I definitely see winning the division in sight and that was not the case a month ago.

Destroyed the Mets tonight. Last year, I called them the next 2018 Red Sox. Their lineup build and offensive style is similar. Speed and don't strikeout (3rd best K ratio in the NL). Acuna basically Mookie Betts of the NL. If they shore up the pitching, Dodgers going to have an uphill battle.

Thank you for the kind words. It is a very enjoyable time to watch the team. Arguably the funnest period of being a sports fan the team is young and not yet failed/reached ceiling
I am surprised Acuna back to the lead off spot has worked again. I hope we can find a true lead off hitter or Albies can mature into that in a couple years. Yes the low strikeouts is why signing Donaldson made sense since he doesn't strike out. There was worry his long ball approach would not mix with our lineup.

Same with pitchers.
Get good hitter 0-2. Often 2 outs.
Ahead by one run so only thing that can kill them is an HR.

Today's MLB is becoming as bad as today's NBA
High strikeouts and walks limiting the amount of action.
Home runs are cheapened by the juiced balls and little league size stadiums where pop ups are routinely leaving the yard causing guys to swing for the fences leading to high Ks and walks.
