If I were a Stros fan, I'd be nuclear livid at Hinch. Greinke was a 80 pitches and made one mistake. No one else on the Nats could figure out how to get hard contact off him. Then you warm up Cole for half a fuckin' hour and don't bring him in. You don't put the title in the hands of Will Harris, Robert Osuna, and Joe Smith. No tomorrow. You ride and die with Greinke and Cole. And the Astros offense deserves a shitstorm too.

Can't say I'm surprised by the Nationals winning - I think a lot of people overlooked how great their pitching is. Speaking of pitching, the way Hinch managed his pitchers tonight has to be the dumbest I can remember since Buck Showalter didn't use Zach Britton against Toronto a few years ago. Just total stupidity.

Or Dave Roberts with Ryan Madson and Kerchoke :lol. Incidentally, these are two "by the book" managers who take orders from the analytics department. Not going out swinging with Greinke and Cole is mindboggling, but I'm sure the data sheet told him, "We really like Will Harris in this spot."

And this was a series between a baseball mid-market in Houston and a team with absolutely zero national appeal in the Nats, and the ratings are on par with last season's NBA Finals featuring the then most popular team in the NBA (Warriors) against Kawhi Leonard. NBA almost always gets their most popular teams and players in the Finals, while the MLB actually has parity.

I know it's always easy to criticize from hindsight, and bringing in Harris is analytically sound, but why I don't like just "sticking to the script" in this case is because a leverage situation in a World Series Game 7 is another level of pressure, and Greinke was proving he could handle the pressure the entire game. He was only at 80 pitches, and a man on with one out isn't that big of a jam. Kendrick is also a poor off-speed hitter. But if you're going to make any pitching change, you have to go with your top ace. Gerritt Cole, obviously. Then Hinch further fucks himself by putting the game in the hands of Osuna, Urquidy, and Joe Smith.

Yeah, and there was ever a time for a Madbum moment, it was Gerritt Cole trying to close those last 8 outs. I know Harris was sporting a .90 post-season ERA or whatever, but relievers are always a gamble and can be feast or famine. Greinke was in no way melting down. The best player in the NL did a best player thing. Not a time to panic.

And btw bring in the phucking technology for balls/stikes, especially inside or outside where the beams make it 100% accurate. Sick of seeing games change on missed calls. The "it's part of the game" is Vegas bullshit. Continue to let the umps make the ball/strike call but then let the bots immediately overrule them. Entertainment factor would be great.

I think it adds credibility and it's why it remains the purest sport of all time. Aside from the Black Sox scandal and East coast/West coast juicing (A-roid,Bonds,Mcgwire,Sosa,etc...) during the late 90s/ early 2000s, it's arguably the only sport not tainted by Las Vegas. Your proposal would slow the game down opposed to what they are trying to do: speed the game up.

I think analysts overrate the effectiveness of sign stealing via technology. To pull this off seamlessly, you have to have the field camera transmit the footage to the tablet to a coach or player in the bullpen/dugout, and then that coach or player has to relay the information to the batter during the at bat, forcing the batter to look to his left or right for a few seconds. I think doing that would throw off your rhythm at the plate. Sure, the batter can step out in order to process the information, but then he'll be likely getting a different pitch when he steps back in.

But I still think it'd throw off your rhythm and timing as a hitter to try and stay aware of that signal while also trying to concentrate on hitting 95+ and wicked off-speed shit. Just too much multitasking for an event that has a .350ms window.

My 10th grade year I had made varsity cause of my pitching but when not pitching I did not play much. Coach had me coach first. He would steal pitches by looking into the pitchers glove to see the grip. Didn’t work all the time but when it did he would signal to me and I yelled the code word for curve or fastball as the pitcher went into the windup. My goal was to make it sound like regular chatter.
It worked. You be surprised how right handed high school pitchers show the grip to the third base coach.
In the windup I held the ball in my hand in the glove and made sure no one could see.
In the stretch I held the ball apart from the glove and changed my grip as my hands came together and no one could tell if I changed my grip or not.

I also tried to make all my pitches look the same coming out my hand with the same form and release point. By doing this it really helped. Especially my change up cause it came out of hand looking like a fastball.
My curveball was my weapon of death. Oh the glory days.

The Astros are fucked. They're going to be watched like a hawk in 2020.

Wouldn't be surprised if they get some kind of punishment before then either. As more players and pitchers come forward with more details, the worst they look.
