Yeah, this is ridiculous. Should've been 5% all along. No need to keep the life support on.
The open primaries are keeping people like Tulsi alive in this. She's already qualified for the November debate and is just one poll away from making the December one.
She's literally polling at near zero percent with actual democrats but muh republicans are boosting her like theres no tomorrow.

agreed. I think the first few primaries will do that. Once the candidate is finalized, I would expect a tidal wave of actual donations from grassroots. Once it crystallizes, I expect a massive effort to spring up virtually overnight.
Before then though, having a field of candidates to choose from steals oxygen from Golfy-McDumb's tweet shits, not a bad thing, IMO.
a debate stage with this many people is useless. there isn't enough time for the candidates to get into much substance and everyone is trying to maybe get 1-2 soundbites to stick out from the crowd
they should just have it down to 5 or so now... biden/warren/sanders/pete/kamala and continue to weed them out. nobody thinks klobuchar, steyer, booker, yang, gabbard actually have a snowballs chance

Let me answer: "shit care" is better than "no care". That is what this study shows:
New study finds 45,000 deaths annually linked to lack of health coverage
Uninsured, working-age Americans have 40 percent higher death risk than privately insured counterparts
Nearly 45,000 annual deaths are associated with lack of health insurance, according to a new study published online today by the American Journal of Public Health. That figure is about two and a half times higher than an estimate from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2002.
The study, conducted at Harvard Medical School and Cambridge Health Alliance, found that uninsured, working-age Americans have a 40 percent higher risk of death than their privately insured counterparts, up from a 25 percent excess death rate found in 1993.

America’s Red State Death Trip
Why does falling life expectancy track political orientation?
the past few decades have been marked by growing divergence among regions along several dimensions, all closely correlated.
In particular, the political divide is also, increasingly, an economic divide. As The Times’s Tom Edsall put it in a recent article (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/25/opinion/trump-economy.html),
“red and blue voters live in different economies.”
What Edsall didn’t point out is that red and blue voters don’t just live differently, they also die differently.
Democratic-leaning areas used to look similar to Republican-leaning areas (https://www.brookings.edu/blog/the-avenue/2019/09/10/america-has-two-economies-and-theyre-diverging-fast/) in terms of productivity, income and education.
But they have been rapidly diverging, with blue areas getting more productive, richer and better educated.
In the close election of 2016,
counties that supported Hillary Clinton accounted for 64 percent of output (https://www.brookings.edu/blog/the-avenue/2016/11/29/another-clinton-trump-divide-high-output-america-vs-low-output-america/), almost twice the share of Trump country.
he red-blue divide isn’t just about money. It’s also, increasingly, a matter of life and death.
U.S. life expectancy has been below that of other advanced countries (https://www.healthsystemtracker.org/chart-collection/u-s-life-expectancy-compare-countries/#item-le_the-u-s-has-seen-slower-growth-in-life-expectancy-than-comparable-countries_2019) for a long time.
rise in mortality has, in turn, been largely a result of rising “deaths of despair”: drug overdoses, suicides and alcohol.
In 1990, today’s red and blue states had almost the same life expectancy.
Since then, however, life expectancy in Clinton states has risen (https://twitter.com/paulkrugman/status/1200782901996077057) more or less in line with other advanced countries,
compared with almost no gain in Trump country.
At this point, blue-state residents can expect to live more than four years longer than their red-state counterparts.
In 1990, Texas and Florida had higher life expectancy than New York and almost matched California; today, they’re far behind.
The growing gap in educational levels has also surely played a role: Better-educated people tend to be healthier than the less educated.
the prevalence of obesity (https://obesity.procon.org/us-obesity-levels-by-state/) has soared all across America since 1990, but obesity rates are significantly higher in red states.
the facts are utterly inconsistent with the conservative diagnosis of what ails America.
even within America
these evils are concentrated in states that voted for Trump,
and have largely bypassed the more secular blue states.
So something bad is definitely happening to American society.
But the conservative diagnosis of that problem is wrong — dead wrong.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/02/opinion/life-expectancy-united-states.html (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/02/opinion/life-expectancy-united-states.html)
=======================
Red and Blue Voters Live in Different Economies
And they are headed in different directions —
with serious consequences for the president and his political opponents.

True wave election can be speculated here.
Give the four tossups and no other changes... split 50/50. Dems win Presidency, that is 51/50
Give just one "lean Trump party" and that changes. Lose all three "leans" and it is 53/47.
Probably as good as that could get, barring something truly odd, which is too hard to predict this far out.
Most likely remains a split Senate. 50/50. Dems keep a good chunk of their gains from 2018, leaving legislative and executive in the the Democrats hands, by a fairly thin majority in most places.

An Unsettling New Theory: There Is No Swing Voter
Rachel Bitecofer’s radical new theory predicted the midterms spot-on. So who’s going to win 2020?
https://static.politico.com/dims4/default/d6b7875/2147483647/resize/1160x/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.politico.com%2Ffe%2Fe8%2 Ff9d2fd8d427d896af5b54dd81852%2Ffreelander-bitecofer-secondary5.jpg
Once you know the shape of the electorate, she argues, you can pretty much tell how that electorate is going to vote. And the shape of the electorate in 2018, and 2020, for that matter, was determined on the night of November 8, 2016. The new electorate, as she forecasts it, is made up mostly of people who want a president named anything but Donald Trump, competing with another group that fears ruin should anyone but Donald Trump be president.
Although the ranks of independents are growing, up to 40 percent by some surveys, Bitecofer says campaigns have spent entirely too much time courting them, and the media has spent entirely too much caring about their preferences. The real “swing” doesn’t come from voters who choose between two parties, she argues, but from people who choose to vote, or not (or, if they do vote, vote for a third party). The actual percentage of swing voters in any given national election according to her own analysis is closer to 6 or 7 percent than the 15 or 20 most analysts think are out there, and that larger group, Bitecofer says, are “closet partisans” who don’t identify with a party but still vote with one. (The remaining 6 percent or so of true independents, she says, tend to vote for whoever promises a break with the status quo.
“If you think of independents as a fixed pool of voters that change preferences,” she says, “well, that has implications for how you campaign after them. But if you are talking about the preference of independents changing because the pool of independents changes, well that is a different fucking banana.”
Bitecofer has already released her 2020 model, and is alone among election forecasters in giving the Democrats—who, of course, do not yet have a nominee—the 270 electoral votes required to claim the presidency without a single toss-up state flipping their way. She sees anyone in the top tier, or even the second tier of candidates, as strong enough to win back most of the Trump states in the industrial Midwest, stealing a march in the South in places like North Carolina and Florida, and even competing in traditional red states like Georgia, Texas and Arizona. The Democrats are likely to pick up seats again in the House, she says, pegging the total at nine pickups in Texas alone, :wow and have a decent chance of taking back the Senate.
It will be very interesting. I think she is exactly spot on for her theory.
It puts into a more concrete framework, something I have gotten an intuitive sense of, but never quite put into words, i.e. swing voters are rarer than changes in WHO turns out to vote.
It also puts some meat on my own sense that Trump has been the best thing to happen to Democrats in my life time. I see it directly here in my corner of Texas.

So, you don't really have an answer. First solid critical thinking question and you fold.
Let me answer: "shit care" is better than "no care". That is what this study shows:
New study finds 45,000 deaths annually linked to lack of health coverage
https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/sto...alth-coverage/
So what. There's gonna be studies linked to Medicare for all killing people to if that passes.
If, without coverage, 45,000 people die, and with Medicare for all that falls by 50%, then 22,500 die.
Meaning that Medicare for all saves tens of thousands of lives.
That is what, you booger-eating moron. Jesus, you want me to use smaller words?

4+ years of data are in. Medicaid expansion for those benefiting from M E
1) reduced disease and death rate
2) increased the employment rate
compared with states that didn't expand Medicaid.
iow, Trash/Repug policies denying medical care to the poor are policies of negligent manslaughter.

Shitbag Repugs in shithole Texas, say "thanks, Repug shitbag SCOTUS"
Texas Officials Have Already Rigged The 2020 Election. Super Tuesday Is Proof.
Polling place closures in Black and Latino communities led to long lines on primary day and will hurt November’s contest.
On Super Tuesday, long lines at a number of Texas polling stations cast a pall over the Democratic primary (https://www.huffpost.com/news/topic/democratic-primary), sowing confusion and anger on an otherwise clarifying day for the party.
people were forced to wait hours to vote on Tuesday in part because for several years,
the state has systematically closed polling places in communities with large and growing Black and Latino populations.
Texas election officials rapidly eliminated polling places in Black and Latino communities
after the Supreme Court overturned a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in 2013.
The law had previously required a number of states with
histories of racist voting practices, like Texas,
to seek federal approval before making changes to their election rules.
some Harris County residents said they had to wait in line for several hours to vote,
the last voter at Texas Southern University, a college in the county, waited almost seven hours to cast a ballot.
the 50 Texas counties that gained the most Black and Latino residents from 2012 to 2018 eliminated 542 polling sites over that span,
while the 50 counties that gained the fewest Black and Latino residents during that time eliminated only 34 sites.
“Republicans’ only way to retain power is to basically curb the vote,

Michigan governor says vendors ‘being told not to send stuff’ to her state — after Trump bashed her
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Friday made a startling claim that medical supply vendors are “being told” to avoid sending badly needed gear to her state in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.
“What I’ve gotten back is that vendors with whom we’ve procured contracts — they’re being told not to send stuff to Michigan,” she said.
“It’s really concerning, I reached out to the White House last night and asked for a phone call with the president.”
At the time that she called the White House,
Trump was attacking her during an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, in which
the president accused her of being insufficiently grateful for his assistance.
“We’ve had a big problem with the young — a woman governor,”
“You know who I’m talking about — from Michigan.
We don’t like to see the complaints. :lol
Now, she wants a declaration of emergency, and, you know,
we’ll have to make a decision on that.
But Michigan is a very important state. :lol
I love the people of Michigan.” :lol

‘It's a sh-- sandwich': Republicans rage as Florida becomes a nightmare for Trump
https://www.politico.com/states/florida/story/2020/04/03/its-a-sh-sandwich-republicans-rage-as-florida-becomes-a-nightmare-for-trump-1271172
“It’s a sh-- sandwich, and it was designed that way by Scott,” said one DeSantis advisor. “It wasn’t about saving money. It was about making it harder for people to get benefits or keep benefits so that the unemployment numbers were low to give the governor something to brag about.”
Republican Party of Florida chairman Joe Gruters was more succinct: “$77 million? Someone should go to jail over that.”
With hundreds of thousands of Floridians out of work, the state’s overwhelmed system is making it nearly impossible for many people to even get in line for benefits.
So, Trump loses Florida. Especially once the elderly GOP voters die in bulk from infections that their state government acted late to curb.
Between the fuck ups with the unemployment and the fuckups with the slow response... this is a slam dunk for the Democrats.

Name the last two term president that won their second term by a larger margin of victory than their first. I'll wait.
Meanwhile, game it out:

232 to 204 with 102 in the "tossup" category.
If most of the tossups go blue, as they do in wave years, that means 313-224
A deep blue wave gets Georgia as well as one or two normal red leans. 355-182
Trump will do worse than he did four years ago, and there really is no way to win re-election if he does.

One would hope some lessons were learned. I think the vast majority of people will go back to work and won't have much time to think about anything else, simply because that's how the majority of people live. There's no time for introspection or grieving, the altar of money doesn't like to wait, especially when it's in dire straits.
You might argue I'm being pessimistic, but I'm honestly being realistic. I could be wrong though.

That's how we used to live.
True, or, not we've now been taught, have seen & been presented & conditioned by MSM + our own facts a different way to live. One we never have had to live by, or, even consider.
We're standing outside a Wal-Mart waiting for someone to leave so we can take their place among the allowed 5 persons per 1k square foot of that store.
& anybody worth their salt ain't goin' nowhere near (work) when they're at home making very close to 1k a week (including unemployment + the $600 per week stipend). I don't blame 'em. Why risk it? Because the old man is urging us?
"No. I'll go back to work not when the unemployment runs out, but, when that $600 a week runs out +++ when I've run out of the boodle I have been painstakingly able to squirrel away from that unemployment/stipend in the interim." AND THAT WILL BE KEY.

Even if the Coronavirus is a little factor in the 2020 election, which I have no reason to believe it will, what will be a big factor is the millions of people out of a job with no health insurance and a Administration dead set on eliminating the ACA with nothing but a Trump pipe dream....remember, the Dems swept 2018 because of healthcare....no reason to believe that with more people out of a job, and without healthcare this won't be the most important issue in Nov.

FDR was as close to a dictator/king as the USA has ever had. An incestual troglodyte and one of the worst presidents in our history. You're accurate on one thing: he took over a decade to "fix" the Great Depression. The "New Deal" of stimulus packages proved that government spending alone couldn't save the economy, but what ultimately did was supply-side economics caused by the demand filled by the rising threat of Germany and the imminent threat to homeland security from Japan.
He kept winning re-election, like modern day Putin, because he had little/no resistance. The voting bloc was almost entirely Democrat since the conservative religious Southerners were still solid Democrat voters (Dixiecrats, today's ruby red GOP voters) and FDR had long since won over the progressive and minority voters away from the Republican party with his rhetoric and New Deal policies. Therefore, almost everyone was Democratic in the 1930s (both liberal and conservative), except for some moderate families in the Western US and a few Wall Street types did yet vote Republican, but those voting blocs are and were extremely tiny.

But, MM, you forget how FDR commanded former "Col. Hogan" from "Hogan's Heroes" to report to him...
3 weeks later - Washington, D.C.
"General Hogan, if you will follow me, sir."
A couple hallways, a couple turns and they arrived. "Go right in, sir, he's waiting for you."
"Mr. President." General Hogan came to attention, cocked his arm and held his salute.
"Ah, Robert, please forgive me for not rising, it's this infernal chair. Come, son, come close and tell me everything."

Texas by 2%
Within the range that a surge in Democratic turnout can flip. Democratic party is already working around virus for registration, and is building on the machinery and experience gained in 2018. Cornyn is probably safe, given he is less hated than Rafael.
If the Republican government here botches their response, as it is looking likely, that is also a big plus for us. Low levels of testing, a feeble state response, and a governor seeming to wanting to open up before testing available, will mean a nasty spike in deaths, and that will have consequences.

2% is the average of polls, one or two showing Biden winning state. Every election for the last decade has seen Republican margin of victory fading, as pretty much every expert studying demographics has predicted. The kids in my wifes classes are MAD, and they will be eligible to vote in the fall. Most of them won't, but the ones that do will voting for Democrats up and down the ticket. Our party's outreach to these voters is one of our priorities.
Texas will still likely go to Trump. Just like Hillary was likely to win the presidency in 2016.

Two Special Elections On Tuesday Could Hint At Another Blue Wave In 2020
On Tuesday, we’ll get a taste of whether Democrats’ electoral advantage on paper will hold up in practice, as California and Wisconsin hold special elections for two vacant congressional seats. The main event is in the California 25th Congressional District, a bellwether seat in the north Los Angeles suburbs, where both parties see a chance to add to their ranks in the House. But if Democrats are also competitive in the quickly reddening, rural Wisconsin 7th Congressional District, it could signal another blue wave in the fall.

Not a generic ballot poll.
Also drawn over all battleground states as a whole. They don't vote as a block, so it can be generally indicative of the average, but electoral college is not allocated on that average.

For some seniors, virus is shifting their views of Trump
Tommye and Rody Johnson have been registered Republicans for almost seven decades. So while the couple from Vero Beach, Florida, had some reservations about then-candidate Donald Trump in 2016, they just couldn’t imagine voting for Hillary Clinton.
Now, after nearly four years of President Trump’s tweets, the impeachment scandal, and especially, what they see as his disastrous handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, they can’t imagine voting for him again.
They’re not the only ones. According to a recent Morning Consult poll, Mr. Trump’s approval rating among voters over the age of 65 dropped 20 points between March and the end of April, making seniors more critical of the president’s performance than any other age group aside from 18- to 29-year-olds. Much of that decline seems directly related to the virus, which so far has posed a far more serious health threat to older people.
Editor’s note: As a public service, all our coronavirus coverage is free. No paywall.
As the debate over lifting lockdowns has intensified, the president’s eagerness to get the economy moving again seems to have put him at odds with many older voters – who, as retirees without children at home, may not be as focused on reopening schools or local businesses. In the same Morning Consult poll, by a nearly 6-to-1 margin, seniors said the government should prioritize halting the spread of the virus over focusing on the economy. Some older adults say that Mr. Trump – himself a septuagenarian, as is presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden – doesn’t seem to understand how vulnerable and undervalued this crisis has made them feel.
...
Ms. Penk, like the Johnsons, voted for Mr. Trump last time around, but is now part of a “Republicans for Biden” Facebook group. She worries about her husband’s health, and says Mr. Trump’s handling of the pandemic cemented her decision to vote a “straight blue” ticket in November.

I don't care what Team Trump is going with. The issue here is not whether people are going to vote for Joe, is if enough people that will vote for him are going to show up and actually vote, especially in swing States.
Getting young kids to come out and vote has been a problem, you can ask Bernie about that. Again, this would be much easier if the candidate wouldn't be a fossilized mummy.

Maybe I’m missing something but if Kelly is winning by 13 points (which multiple polls have now shown) in AZ then Biden has got to have at least an 8 point lead over Trump in the state....There can’t be that many Trump/Kelly supporters out there, right?
Keep in mind Sinema was up big on McSally around this time 2 years ago and the lead narrowed a lot by election time, but that’s less likely this time around when McSally is the incumbent and is a known quantity imo.
Gideon is also up 8 points on Collins in Maine, and there are a lot more races up for grabs than Republicans realize. Montana is a toss up with Bullock in the race, and Georgia/Kentucky/South Carolina are all in the margin of error. Even Joni Ernst’s approval rating in Iowa has started to dip.
Time for Mike Bloomer to start carpet bombing the key senate races with negative ads.

Trump's overall approval spiked for the brief period of time where he acted like a grown up, and have fallen right back down to the basement it crawled out of.

November is a LOOOOOOOONG time from now. Did you think that in the first few days of JUNE, the Dow would be over 26K? Did you think that (in the first days of June) there would be CROWDS of people in the streets all over the US, and NO ONE is hyperventilating about social distancing (when it suits their agenda - chaos)?
Traffic is almost back to normal now - people are out and about, and the restaurants are not up to speed. Yesterday, my local Pollo Tropical closed at 7pm (rush dinner hour) from selling out all their chicken earlier.
And you're an immigrant from China who has never been to China.

Did I say Trump is going to win? I said Nov is a long time from now - a lot of changes in the meantime. We shall see, and polls in June are meaningless.

Data for the generic ballot is highly predictive, even this far out.
We are going to take a hit no matter how much you wishcast otherwise. How much remains to be seen, but it will not the rosy shit the con man you fascists worship is going to peddle.

The lady has a serious point.
"unthinkable" has been FACT for nearly 5 years
Pulitzer-winning historian issues dark warning about Trump’s GOP
Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum ...
Trump and his Republican allies might complete their authoritarian transformation by stealing November’s election.
she warns that Republicans have been complicit in Trump gathering authoritarian powers over democratic institutions —
and they may soon finalize that process.
“Will they try to change the rules?” she added.
“Will they mess around with distance voting?
Will they, you know, exacerbate the problems caused by the pandemic to prevent people from voting?
That’s the thing that’s going to happen next.”
she had
little faith that Trump or the GOP were willing to risk losing the White House or their grip on the U.S. Senate.
“Do they value democracy in America :lol
enough to allow a real election to go through and to allow themselves to lose?” she said.
“I think there will be a few people that will break out of it.
I’m doubtful as to whether we can rely on the party leadership.”

“Do they value democracy in America enough ..."?
It has been FUCKING OBVIOUS that the oligarchy and Repugs have NO VALUES but wealth and power.

They are not. Generic ballot is a pretty darn good predictor, even this far out. The closer you get, the less chance for change anyway.
Trump and his fascist party will get buried this fall, just in time for Democrats to take over redistricting.

One thing is for damn sure, polls in June are a much better predictor of a presidential race than whether or not El Pollo Loco is able to sell all of its chicken before 7pm :lol
