Agree. With Collins seemingly coming off the board and seeing rest of the options out there, Im increasingly of mind that working something out with GSW should be near the top of the list of “plays” that should be made.

The other way to look at is:

1. Is picking up Lauri + another FA like Oubre really the better play? Sure we eat Wiggins deal for 2 more years, but do either of those guys make us that much better over the same period? Doubt it.

2. Is overpaying Zach Collins + getting a few other “distressed assets” here and there better?

3. Is the cost of getting Simmons really worth it given his limitation?

The only other play that appeals to me more is something around a DDR S&T (come on Wizards!), but there is too much smoke are DDR taking Lakers MLE to ignore. Then there is the Knicks, with all that space.

I definitely wouldn't pay the current asking price for Simmons and I don't want Oubre...all the rest I could see to varying degrees depending on other moves that could be made. I also agree with TD 21 that GS is more likely to make their move closer to the deadline with the hopes that Beal comes available.

The Warriors value Wiggins more than most and wouldn't salary dump him with young assets for a poor fit like DeRozan.

They'll wait out a better win now move, even if it takes up until the trade deadline to consummate.

I don’t think we’re saying DDR would be going there anymore (rumor is BS, probably by Oubre people trying to stir interest). It’s in the context of sending White or Murray.

And Cleveland sees Love as an asset too... in any event they have a massive tax bill, and the idea is they may want some relief regardless of how they “view” Wiggins.

White is the only one of the three I could see them having interest in, but the offer would probably stop at Wiggins and Kuminga.

Not anymore and the difference is, the Warriors have to prioritize winning now over their massive tax bill so that their big three don't revolt.

Im assuming Marrkanen isn’t getting more than 10m (12m max) starting, so I’d be ok with Zach around 9m. So yeah, I do that.

Lauri’s is a story of “when betting on yourself goes wrong.” I don’t see him getting the deal starting at 15m he passed up last year. Dummy.

Genuine question, do you think Zach Collins would get anywhere near 9m from a team. I was thinking 2-4m.

Didn’t Zach Collins re-fracture his foot last month? It is doubtful he will be signed by anyone until he passes a physical.

This is what it's come to: I'm actually hoping Dinwiddie is signed and traded to the Wizards because Kuzma (better fit, more well rounded and likely cheaper than Markkanen) is the piece most likely to be traded to the Nets and as I've said, with their massive luxury tax bill, they'd probably prioritize the savings (Walker IV and Eubanks are expendable).

Kuzma/Samanic/Bates-Diop or Jeffries
Johnson/Vassell/Wieskamp
Poeltl/Dieng/Collins
White/Burks/Primo
Murray/Mills/Jones

this is a case where if the Spurs want a player badly enough, they will take him much to the disappointment of fans’ perceived value of what a #12 pick should look like. Let’s see what they do

You were on point, except for the wrong player :lol

He did, Spurs will do their thing but I’d rather them tank and fill out the roster with 1 year projects and prepare to make a jump next year.

The odds on Lowry and DeRozan landing on the same team together are pretty high. Lowry will take meetings with Philly, Dallas, Miami, and, perhaps, New York. I wonder if he signals that he'd take less money IF the team also signs DeMar.

New York could sign each player outright, but neither Lowry nor DeRozan want to conclude their careers on a non-contender.

Miami, Philly, and Dallas could all sign and trade for DeRozan, generating a mid size to large TPE, which, for a contender, is more valuable than a draft pick. But each team would also trigger a hard cap, limiting the value of a large TPE.

Miami has enough space to sign Lowry. The player(s) whom they'd trade for DeRozan is unclear. The player must be under contract, so Duncan Robinson is out. Precious Achiuwa?

Dallas has enough space to sign Lowry. They've cleared a lot of space, either to outbid Lowry's suitors or max him out and retain THJ. The only obvious sign and trade for DeRozan is Porzingis. Kind of makes sense for both teams.

Philly would have to get super creative and is in the worst position to actually pull off trades. DeRozan and picks for Simmons in order to generate a TPE large enough to absorb Lowry is the only pathway I see. But Morey's asking price for Simmons appears much higher.

Spurs hold all the cards here, if only I had any confidence in Brian Wright...

Young players with decent trade value on reasonable contracts .
Veterans wanted by contenders, easy to make S&T deals.
A ton of cap space to take bad contracts.

A good GM would accelerate our timeline by a couple of years this summer.

But as per usual, it'll be we like what we have. :pop:

As I mention two posts above this, I believe this request will come from Lowry's camp and Philly, Dallas, and Miami will need to land DeRozan as part of their pitch to Lowry. This is very positive for the Spurs.

Even Patty and Rudy could be sent out in a sign and trade with all the interest that's coming from teams above the cap. They would probably want them to sign for a tax-payers MLE though, but it seems like there's plenty on the table for the Spurs. Just don't fuck this up Brian Wrong

I'm guessing Milutinov.

Kings desperately need center help, and the Spurs have his rights. He had shoulder surgery in February, no idea about his current status. Kings will have the room with the MLE to carve out enough to sign him.

He might be a fallback plan if they can't secure Holmes, which they probably can't.

They have 2 seconds in 2022, and an extra 2nd in 2025 to part with.
It would be interesting if they can reap something out of his draft rights. Wouldn’t it be something if the trade that nets them a small asset is Milutinov and not Demar or at some point back, Aldridge.

Id love for this to happen. He was never going to play for the Spurs.

:lmao At the media pretending Lowry is going to swing the balance of power in the league because he played for one of their pets (they'd barely know he existed if he played here).

The rare times he decided to play last season, he appeared to have lost a step and even if he was just coasting, the Heat would still need a quality modern four to have a path to championship contention (Gay makes sense, but isn't good enough).

As usual, the Raptors are probably going to get lucky. Hopefully the Heat draw the line at Dragic, Achuiwa, Okpala.

Honestly wouldn't mind doing a S&T with the Clippers for some combination of Morris/Ibaka/Zubac and then just trying to poach Batum with being able to offer more money.

The Clippers offer would probably be Kennard and Beverley. It'd be incumbent on them to find a third team to take Beverley (possibly Pistons into cap space for top 55 protected 2nd).

I wonder if Kawhi's camp has concerns about his recovery from his current injury and the kind of player he'll be in a year. If there is a decent chance that he opts in and it becomes clear he's not worth a max extension, then maybe it is preferable to lock a new, but less lucrative, four year deal now.

The Lowery to MIA S&T seems baked now that they picked up Drogen’s option. I assume then they’re hoping DeRozen takes the full MLE which I think is just shy of $10M. Seems very possible, i which case we lose him for nada.

Oh well.

There is little chance that the Mavs would see DDR as a better fit than Portzingis. I can see them adding DDR in place of someone else on their roster but I’d bet there are better options than swapping those two players.

Perhaps what he wants is a 1+1, followed by a 5 year max at $235 ( https://mobile.twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/1421949221935190018 ; 213hoops has that 5 year contract at $250M, so not sure who's right. https://213hoops.com/kawhi-leonard-declines-player-option-enters-free-agency/ ). Honestly, just meet the minimum salary. Our only goals are to play our young guys a lot and get a top 5 pick next draft. We don't need to sign anyone that won't be a major piece in 3 years to any sort of long-term deal or large contract. At this point, just run Poeltl and Eubanks all year. Who cares? We are tanking.

I don’t know. Honestly he’s been getting injury after injury and hasn’t been the same from his breakout season at Indiana. I used to like him a lot but I haven’t watched him in 2 years.

He could be worth a look on make good deal but I don’t think the Spurs as a good fit for him, and vice versa.

Spurs are very guard heavy, needing to develop and in all likelihood (save unexpected injuries to other teams or someone making a surprising leap) out of the playoffs. He won’t raise his stats here, and for the Spurs what would they be looking for with him? I don’t see it.

Id say pass.

Yeah I'm not sure what Bobby Marks means by claiming the smart thing would be to opt in. The smart thing has always been opting out, signing a 1+1, then signing a max next summer with full bird rights. He'll likely sign both of these deals before he plays a single minute of basketball too.

I see the spurs off season much like DeRozen's off season. I'm sure DeRozen would have loved to go to the Lakers for his 25 plus million dollar salary. but the Lakers chose Russ. So if you want to be a Laker its a huge huge cut in salary. Sorry DeMarr. So maybe its Miami, probably another cut in salary or NY another cut in salary because now they have a gm that knows what he is doing and can afford to wait a little bit to improve their team. After all its NY ! Surprise, DeRozen has just found out that he's not that big of an NBA star any more.
SA is in the same boat as DeRozen. Free agents don't rush to come here, they typically look somewhere else first. There isn't a big 3 to help win a championship any more or a big 2 or a big 1 for that matter. So the second, third or fourth tier players come here and we make do with what we have or can sign, until we develop a star or manage to somehow trade for one. That's who we are now.
The best thing to do now is to not kid ourselves and admit where we are now. We need to draft well, not half ass and since we have the money, take a chance on a somewhat high profile player. It may not right the ship right away but its a path to something truly better in a year or two. At least its a direction.
As for DeRozen work with the spurs on a sign and trade to get a decent contract somewhere else, prove to yourself and other teams that you're not a 3rd banana. Secure your last good contract and ride off into the sunset.

I think "hate" is a bit of a harsh word for DeRozan. At this point, he just is what he is. There should be no expectation that is ever going to change significantly (although I'm gonna be pissed if he goes somewhere else and starts chucking up threes)

By all accounts, he made the most of a situation not of his choosing. He came to San Antonio and played like a professional, fulfilled his contract, and did his best to win with a limited roster. Like DPG21920, the fact that he wasn't traded despite rumors could be as much of an indictment on him as it is the Spurs...it takes two partners to make a deal, and they definitely should not have taken negative value just for the sake of moving him.

The problem is that he is too good and too competitive to really let the the Spurs go iton rebuilding mode, but not good enough on his own to get us over the hump (or even into the playoffs, apparently). With him, we would likely just be stuck picking in the 10-15 range again.

I'd rather let him go compete somewhere, and the Spurs can choose a new direction...whether that means tank or re-tool, it's time for this experiment to be over.

I don’t know. I can def see him doing a 1+1 starting at full MLE (~$10M), and getting a wink wink with MIA to make him whole next year. They have a track record of doing that.

DDR is still a great player. But the problem is that he would be a great 2 or 3 best player on a team, not a 1. He is great for the Spurs if you want to make a push to make the playoffs, even though that effort has failed two years in a row. But he has kept us right there on the verge of the 8th seed. But this is not a team that is like the Suns, where we had a great team and we were maturing into a competitive playoff team. This is a team that is in desperate need of a rebuild. DDR just delays that another year, especially because next year is also supposed to be a strong draft. All we hear about is the Spurs trying to trade down, well guess what, you aren't trading down into the top 5. Teams rarely trade those picks and we don't have anything to give to get a top 5 pick. So they only way to try the lottery odds are to bottom out. I'm not a DDR hater. I think he is a quality player that does a lot of good things, but at his age, he should be playing for a team that will make the playoffs and has a shot of contending, not a team that is so young and unproven that it will take probably 2 or 3 years before they are ready to be in the position Phoenix was in to start last season.

If that 3-and-D player gives up 8 points less per game than DeRozan and scores 12 points you have DeRozan's 20 PPG plus better spacing. Makes no sense to pay the guy that money. This needs to be a season where we find out if DJ, Derrick and Lonnie can actually make the next step.
We saw our ceiling with Demar, first round sweep at best.

Him leaving is a win-win situation. Either the young guys finally improve or we get a top10 pick. 8th-10th seed purgatory year in and year out is the worst thing that can happen to any team.

Patty also needs to go. Not because he can't be useful, but because we already have too many guards and Pop still thinks it's better for Patty to just keep chucking while Lonnie sits in the corner.

Signing Markkanen would be the final proof that PATFO has completely lost it.

I think the single best thing the Spurs can do this off season is to not re-sign DeRozan. I wish him the best, be it in L.A., Miami, or anywhere else. He's a good guy who just doesn't fit the timeline or the rebuild. The Spurs aren't in the hunt for a title any time soon, so the only thing that should matter is building & developing for the future. If DeRozan comes back, that will be a big chunk of usage rate, minutes, and experience taken away from the young guys who are ostensibly the future. I think it'd be really difficult, after characterizing the drafting of Primo as a Spurs are playing chess while other teams are playing checkers moment, to then turn around and defend bringing back DeRozan, which to me would look like a Spurs are playing checkers while other teams play chess moment.

Today reminds me of '19 when the big news just after free agency broke was the return of Marco Belinelli to the Spurs. I'd actually be happy with that tonight IF it meant the Spurs picked a plan to keep their powder dry in order to absorb a max player later this season or next summer. That is at least a concrete and admirable direction.... The Simmons asking price is going to fall between now and camp. Several teams are going to spend all their money and lock guys into non-tradable contracts until December. Other players will come on the market...

Picking up two late first round picks (through sign and trades) would be very useful if we need to cobble together, say, three future firsts to absorb a max contract. But it seems like the Spurs don't even attempt to operate with this mindset.

The last few years the Spurs are a B+ on drafting and talent development (Samanic TBD, Primo TBD), a B+ on cap management (Pau Gasol deal is still cringeworthy, but in the distant rear view), and a definite D on asset management. A top 15 front office, but not a top 5 front office.

The asset management piece requires contextualization---the front office is blocked by trying to remain competitive for Pop. But this is a critical offseason. The FO needs to make good moves. It can't fail another transaction season on the asset management front. A legacy of excellence only provides so much cover for an unexpected period of floundering.

I'm fine with this. I was afraid Spurs would overpay for a 9th man. I'd rather see Samanic get PT and the Spurs keep their long term cap clean for someone who could be...better than Lauri.

I wouldn’t mind dieng back. He didn’t really get a lot of time to gel with the team last year. Plus he really looked saddled by that shoulder injury he got. From what I saw he’ could guard the perimeter somewhat and affect shots around the rim, his shooting will be there once he gets more comfortable with his teammates.

:pop:

Sad, but true!!

He's not turning down that much money. A sign and trade will likely happen of he wants to reunite with lowry and with his boy Jimmy.

Just as he doesn’t have to do any S&T he doesn’t want, neither do the Spurs. If the Spurs have a target in mind, like John Collins, they’ll HAVE to renounce DDR and his $40M cap hold, and that’ll be the end of the S&T.

I would do Lauri and a 1st for Demar in a S&T. At least Lauri can shoot and space the floor + the 1st could get us a nice future piece

Windhorst also said the Heat wanted to do a S&T with the Spurs for DeRozan that would’ve sent Iggy back. Hell nah! Spurs supposedly rejected that offer telling them had a better S&T offer on the table.

I can’t see any way that it would have been just Iggy. There had to be better assets attached to that as Iggy imo is a negative asset. But glad to hear there is a better offer out there. Really hoping a good young player is involved or a solid fit like Lauri + a 1st round pick

I don't think the italicized is right. Giving up his cap hold means abandoning our right to match an offer he receives, not our Bird Rights to pay him more than the room we have left over (we did this once with Ginobili for example, give up our matching rights and then gave him a big contract with Bird Rights). We could still S&T him to a team that is limited to say the MLE, for more than the MLE...

I can see why Miami would like this trade. But what good is Iggy at this point in his career on a team in tank mode? I hope they were talking about throwing in other assets because the Spurs have no reason to make that trade unless they get a thrill out of making Miami more competitive at their expense.

We’ll have to disagree. When you renounce, you lose the Bird rights. The only thing you can do with the player at that point is to sign him into cap room, like any other player, because that is what he is: any NBA player. Your scenario basically shits all over the concept of a cap hold.

Basically, you can still S&T him but you can't go over your cap space to do it.. So if we have $48M in cap space, sign Collins to $28M/yr and renounce DDR, then we can only S&T DDR for $20M or less.....that's my understanding of the rules...
