Ike just continues to chug but he does not look to be strengthening. No eye has formed yet, and outflow to the west is non-existent.
Puzzling to say the least. He should be bombing out right now.

Hey, I might drive past Jekka's parents' place every day heading home from work. Gameplan right now is to stick it out. My guess is with the Rita evac being such a clusterfuck most people will.
Local media seems to be handling things a little more responsibly, advising people to only evacuate if they are in the zone. In 2005 the coverage basically went:
1) Interview with city official advising people to not panic and please only evacuate if they are being told to.
2) Cut back to the studio: "RUN MOTHERFUCKERS! OMG!!!1!!!11! And now, Tom with weather."
3) Tom: "RUN MOTHERFUCKERS!!!! OMG!!!!11!!!1!"

Any chance the impact of the trough will lessen and we see Ike track further to the west?

This is a SCARY storm. It's packing 50% more energy than Katrina with a projected storm surge in the Houston/Galveston area of fifteen feet. It is shaping up to be the most powerful storm energy wise (not necessarily wind speed) in the last 40 years.

As SFIE said - we're not evacing this time. According to all reports, we should have classes cancelled, but we're here till 5. Well, the other suckers are here till 5, we're checking out early to round out our supplies.
We're still on the dirty side of the storm with high winds and rain expected, and it could still be a direct hit. Though, since it tends to continue shifting northward every new cycle, it may yet take the Rita path. In which case I will celebrate our good fortune with a day off.
But I'm a little freaked out over this storm right now, and would like to get home and to work on cleaning out the storage closet so we've got a place to shelter, just in case.
Edited to add - We are 59 and Beechnut, right by Channel 2. The surrounding streets might flood with tons of rain, but otherwise, the biggest danger is something through one of our 2 story windows. Can't do much about that though, so . . .

easjer, I don't know if I would be staying if I were you. I realize it's your choice, but I just read this article:
http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/show.html
It doesn't bode well for the entire Texas coast. This hurricane is a monster. If you calculate that he's moving ~10 mph at landfall, with hurricane force winds of 115 miles around, even if you don't take a dead hit from Ike, you're talking up to ~10+ hours of 74 mph winds (and over), and that's sustained. Gusts will be much higher. Also the torrential rain and tornadic possibilities make it a precarious situation, especially if he gains any core wind strength.
If you stay, please take every single precaution possible to make your home safe.
From the article:
This "Integrated Kinetic Energy" was recently proposed by Dr. Mark Powell of NOAA's Hurricane Research Division as a better measure of the destructive power of a hurricane's storm surge than the usual Category 1-5 Saffir-Simpson scale. For example, Hurricane Katrina hit Mississippi as a strong Category 3 hurricane, yet its storm surge was more characteristic of a Category 5 storm. Dr. Powell came up with a new scale to rate potential storm surge damage based on IKE (not to be confused with Hurricane Ike!) The new scale ranges from 1-6. Katrina and Wilma at their peaks both earned a 5.1 on this scale (Figure 2). At 9:30am EDT this morning, Ike earned a 5.6 on this scale, the highest kinetic energy of any Atlantic storm in the past 40 years.

I appreciate the concern, CH, but we're not in a mandatory evac zone, and we made that mistake last time with Rita. We're not in danger from the storm surge on the SW side of town, and our area is only prone to flooding in water-logged rains. In fact, we've only had problems once in the two years in our house - and it wasn't our house/neighborhood that was the problem, our access home was blocked off.
I'll be honest, I'm worried. Our greatest threat is from winds, and we've got two-story windows and there isn't a damn thing we can do about it. We could have damage. But we ourselves will be relatively safe. We have water and food, and will be stopping on the way home to gather even more supplies to be safe. We have batteries, flashlights, radio, etc. car chargers for our cell phones and so on. We'll pick up a Texas roadmap for just in case, and if things get worse, we'll consider making a run for my mom's house in NB.
Car is gassed up, and when we get home tonight, we'll be cleaning out the storage closet under the stairs so we can shelter there - the safest part of our house, under the stairs and blocked off from any potential debris. SFIE will clear out the patio, and I'll be cleaning everything and putting as much away as possible.
We'll take all the precautions we can, but we feel like the most responsible thing to do now is shelter in place, because we aren't in danger of being flooded out. We know our house has made it through more than one hurricane, so we'll bank on that, and do what we can to be ready.

Honestly, I'd stay in Houston if I wasn't in a flood prone area. You have to factor my - as Melissa would put it - weather wood but at the same time I just don't think its going to be a huge storm wind wise. The winds aren't that strong to begin with, they're just WIDE. They aren't mixing to the surface very well either so I just don't see much of a reason for heading out if you're not going to flood or if you don't live in an unsturdy home.
I'd stay in a safe room and I'd have plenty of supplies - I'd def board my windows in that room at the least. Think of a spot you'd go in case of a tornado etc etc. This storm is giong to be very bad in Galveston but Houston Proper should come out of it relatively OK. Even Cat 1 storms leave a lot of wind damage in the form of downed limbs or trees and power limes, some roof damage and the like but they aren't usually something you'd evacuate for.
Keep in mind I'm a weather freak and if I had kids I'd leave just cause kids change everything.

Oh, I think the chances of the storm coming west are extremely low. The models have had a lot of info to digest and they've started to really zone in on the area between freeport and matagorda bay. Its huge so San Antonio likely sees 40-50 mph winds and some rain (I dno't even think it'll be much rain tbh) but as long as you don't plan a picnic for Saturday you'll be fine.
The windfields are huge huge huge right now but they do tend to have less of an effect over land because of the friction between the wind and land. We will also be on the weaker side of the storm with winds coming off of East TX and not the Gulf. Then again, we already have a shitload of moisture in the air right now (its EXTREMELY high) so it won't take much to set off rain. We might actually see more rain than I'm thinking but the fact taht we're on the weaker side of the stormfactors into it quite a bit.
Although there's a good chance for minimal TS force winds in San Antonio it wouldn't suprise me if we only got winds around 25-30mph in the end.

What about west houston Katy area?
According to the news report I just saw - wind damage and rain. How much and severe depends on where the eye is. Less rain and rain bands if it makes landfall with the eye near Galveston, but higher winds. Lower winds but the potential for an extra 6+ inches of rain if the eye centers on Freeport.
There is a decent chance Ike comes over Ft. Bend County/West Harris County as a Cat 3.

So it's WEST of the Galveston/Houston area? I thought they were all focusing on a dead on Galveston hit...
From what I just saw, some models have it hitting Galveston or east of Galveston, which would be better for Houston/Galveston - the biggest rain damage, the potential for tornados, the highest storm surge will then hit Chambers county upwards.
If it hits near Freeport, it'll cause more damage to the Houston/Galveston area, because the rain bands and the storm surge will be heaviest on the right side of the storm.

Latest Statement from Galveston National weather Service:
All neighborhoods... and possibly entire coastal communities... will be inundated during high tide. Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single family one or two story homes will face certain death. Many residences of average construction directly on the coast will be destroyed. Widespread and devastating personal property damage is likely elsewhere. Vehicles left behind will likely be swept away. Numerous roads will be swamped... some may be washed away by the water. Entire flood prone coastal communities will be cutoff. Water levels may exceed 9 feet for more than a mile inland. Coastal residents in multi-story facilities risk being cutoff. Conditions will be worsened by battering waves. Such waves will exacerbate property damage... with massive destruction of homes... including those of block construction. Damage from beach erosion could take years to repair.

Glad they're putting it in black and white like that. We have clients down in Galveston, talked to one this afternoon on her way out, she told me some folks were staying behind saying it wouldn't be anything more than another Rita.
And she pointed out the surge was already lapping at the sea wall, and they had been told on the news about 4 foot of surge in Pensacola, 400 miles from the storm.
Sadly it sounds like Darwin's going to be awfully busy the next 48-72 hours.

Rain in one location isn't even close to something that will impact the entirety of our economy nationally.
First and foremost it's frustrating to hear people are staying, because it's clear this storm means business.
But I was talking a step back from that and looking at the impact on the entire nation.

This storm is absolutely huge, but its also not very strong because its so broad. Wind reports are going to be low. A lot of the wind is over the ocean and its not mixing down there so its not going to do so over land. I dunno, I don't expect much wind wise out of this storm but the surge should be the story.

Explosion of convection in Ike's eastern center of rotation may actually prevent him from forming an eye. Never-the-less, the damage he does to Galveston will be nothing short of total.

With Ike, size matters for killer storm surge
http://www.physorg.com/newman/gfx/news/withikesizem.jpg
Dawson Voris, 9, of Corpus Christi, Texas, walks through storm surge water from Hurricane Ike as the water pushes over the Padre Balli Park beach in Padre Island, Texas, and into the parking lot Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008. (AP Photo/Corpus Christi Caller-Times,Todd Yates)
(AP) -- Hurricane Ike's gargantuan size - not its strength - will likely push an extra large storm surge inland in a region already prone to it, experts said Thursday.
Ike's giant girth means more water piling up on Texas and Louisiana coastal areas for a longer time, topped with bigger waves. So storm surge - the prime killer in hurricanes - will be far worse than a typical storm of Ike's strength, the National Hurricane Center said.
And because coastal waters in Texas and Louisiana are so shallow, storm surge is usually larger there than in other regions, according to storm experts. A 1900 hurricane following a similar track to Ike inundated Galveston Island, killing at least 8,000 people - America's deadliest storm.
"It's a good recipe for surge," said Benton McGee, supervisory hydrologist at the U.S. Geological Survey's storm surge center in Ruston, La. "We're already seeing water being piled up in the Gulf. On top of that you're going to have water forced into the bays along the coast."
The National Hurricane Center is forecasting a 20-foot surge - a rapid rising of water inundating areas and moving inland - for a large swath of Texas and the Louisiana coasts. Above that, the center predicts "large and dangerous battering waves." Waves could be 50 feet tall, said hurricane center spokesman and meteorologist Dennis Feltgen.
Some computer models have waves topping out at 70 feet, but the waves usually break well before hitting shore, so the maximum usually doesn't get quite that high.
"It's going to do tremendous damage over a large area even if its doesn't strengthen anymore," predicted former hurricane center director Max Mayfield.
That's directly due to Ike's size. Experts are trying to figure out when they've seen a storm this wide. Ike's tropical storm force winds stretch for 510 miles, and weather radar from Galveston to Key West can see its outer bands. That's about 70 percent larger than an average hurricane.
"Because of the very large expanse of hurricane force winds, Ike will create a storm surge well in excess of what would normally be associated with a storm of its intensity," the National Hurricane Center warned late Thursday afternoon.
Areas that have a hurricane warning - Morgan City, La., to Baffin Bay, Texas - can expect storm surges up to 20 feet. Areas with a tropical storm warning - Baffin Bay to Port Mansfield, Texas, and Morgan City to the Mississippi-Alabama border - can expect five to seven feet of storm surge, Feltgen said.
The size and relatively slow speed means more water keeps building, pushing inland for hours after Ike hits the coast, McGee said.
Geography doesn't help either. Experts say the Texas coast ranks second, behind Louisiana, as the worst region for storm surge in the United States. That's because the water there is shallower than in most other regions. The energy from a hurricane needs a way to escape. Deeper water can absorb more of it, dissipating the surge, but along the Texas coastline, the water has nowhere to go but up on shore, McGee said. Think of the Gulf of Mexico as a shallow bathtub with a big-time disturbance in it, Mayfield said.
Storm surges reached 16 feet during 2005's Hurricane Rita, which hit just east of Galveston, McGee said. Because the worst surge is always just east of the eye of the hurricane, the Galveston-Houston area was spared the worst of the damage.
Houston is buffered by Galveston Island - which sits in the way of the surge - and the bay system, but still is likely to get a rush of high water as the bay, rivers and canals fill up, McGee said. And water that rushes into Galveston Bay may not be able to get out after the storm, he said.
The U.S. Geological Survey on Thursday sent five teams to the Texas and Louisiana coast installing 80 storm surge devices to measure the flood to come, McGee said.

Real quick. When I was at the UNITY conference in July and was preparing to go hang out with some friends of my close friend and roomie, it somehow came up that I get mistaken for Asian a lot.
So about 30 minutes later, we're hanging out with my friend's friend and their friends (all three of the other friends are Asian), and within five minutes, one of them asks me.

That huge burst of convection to the East of the COC is now beginning to wrap up circularly. Ike seems to be developing an intense core at the moment. If the convection wraps all the way around, I see no reason why he won’t intensify to a category 3 storm. Ike looked very unhealthy this morning but he seems to be restructuring.
