Geraldo was making a comparison between the storm surge and a vampire movie. That's all I got.

How did you do that? I have Sprint as well but i never could figure out how to get the pictures off my phone unless i take out the microcard and plug it into my computer.

He sent them to my cell #, but instead of downloading them off the phone I went to the Sprint web site and used my Picture Mail account to download them.

Its not as bad as it could have been but most of Galveston Island is still underwater. Downtown made it out OK. Port A and parts inbetween are the real question right now.

Not necessarily. Hurricane-force winds only extend so far outward from the eyewall. You can be affected directly by the winds from Ike, but if you're in the outer edges, you might only get tropical-storm force winds.

Agreed. From a friend of mine in the Woodlands, they said that 2/3 of the major power transmission lines in the Woodlands have been destroyed, going to take weeks to get the power back on there.

The west part of the eyewall went over my house. We saw 100-110 mph winds for two to three hours. All of the shingles on the north side of the house were ripped off, and the resulting water intrusion caused all ceilings except in the southernmost two rooms and the garage to collapse. After that, it rained another six inches or so, so everything in the house was drenched. We stayed holed up in the office where the ceiling was still intact until about 9 AM. The carpet was soaked, but at least we were protected from the rain and wind. Once the winds died down below 30 mph or so and we could get a hold of someone on the cell phone, we got the hell out of Dodge. We took some pictures, gathered up some belongings that weren't ruined, and fled to a relative's house in Cypress. The drive was treacherous, trying to find a route that wasn't flooded out, and avoiding debris and fallen trees, but we eventually got there.

I wasn't posting that as proof of how bad the storm was. Someone asked earlier in the thread what happened to Reliant to cause them to cancel the game, so there you go.

Again, they haven't even begun to figure out who all lived and died in this, several areas in eastern Texas (Orange, Jefferson counties) are impassible and still underwater.

And with 40,000 homes to search on Galveston Isle, that's going to take a while too.

you act like it was a tsunami or something. those people had days to get out of town. there is a minumum amount of damage to be expected in coastal cities where hurricanes make landfall. people who were too stupid/lazy to do anything about it deserved to die. what i was LMAO at is people in austin, san antonio, etc stock-piling supplies in preparation :lmao

I agree. If you were too stupid/stubborn to leave under a mandatory evacuation then you deserved whatever you got. My friends in Houston made motel 6 reservations at the weekly rate the minute the storm was indicated to possibly hit Houston, left Thursday night at 2 am to avoid traffic jams, and are comfortably safe right now. Not that difficult.

Chase Building in downtown Houston.

As someone who owes Chase Manhattan a lot of money, this image is fucking awesome.

I'm so sorry about your house, but thankfully you and your family made it out okay. It must've been super crazy going through an eyewall jesus!

Were you insinuating that people overreact to the situation, or that forecasters were too zealous with their storm warnings?

Two very different things.

i think they are the same. forecasters sensationalizing the storm and everyone buying into it. people LOVE preparing for natural disasters, it's like a statewide pity party and everyone wants to participate.. hence having people in austin and san anotnio asking for prayers (:lol) and stocking up on water and supplies. The gas station next to my apartment here in north austin closed yesterday after they ran out of gas :rollin lol, fuckin ridiculous

Yeah, they did a great job of sensationalizing this storm...

That's why 40% of Galveston stayed behind for it.

I hope they hike up your interest rate. I used to work in the building across from that and it looks identical. My friends don't know what's going to happen to their jobs, but they won't be working for awhile. The Chase DR locations in Houston are nowhere near big enough for the amount of people in those buildings.

The stupid people aren't the ones that prepared and got passed by. The stupid ones are the ones that didn't prepare. That includes you, v-crew.

You should always keep on hand:

a couple of cases of bottled water or 5 gallon drinking water jugs.

rechargeable batteries, charged, of course. I recommend Eneloop brand by Sanyo. They hold 85% of their charge for one year after the charge. They also come with adapter sleeves to turn a AA into a C or D cell.

a small camping stove and extra propane bottles.

canned goods to eat. coolers to stash a few refrig or frozen foods.

When the warnings come down, all you should have to do is charge your batteries and put your icemaker into overdrive and bag the results for your cooler(s).
