‘It Seems They Did Not Bathe Him’: Immigrant Mother Shares Shocking Details of Child’s Detention

the shocking tale of one mother who was separated from her infant for 85 days.

One declaration came from Olivia Caceres, whose

1-year-old son was taken from her in November after they fled El Salvador.

The boy was eventually returned to her after 85 days apart, while her husband remains in custody.

What Caceres wrote about her reunion with her child is incredibly painful to read:

He continued to cry when we got home and would hold on to my leg and would not let me go.

When I took off his clothes he was full of dirt and lice.

It seemed like they had not bathed him the 85 days he was away from us.

She continues:

(My son) is not the same since we were reunited.

I thought that, because he is so young he would not be traumatized by this experience, but he does not separate from me.

He cries when he does not see me.

That behavior is not normal.

In El Salvador he would stay with his dad or my sister and not cry.

Now he cries for fear of being alone.

Trump State Department official defends racism, nationalism, and xenophobia (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/6/30/1776928/-Trump-State-Department-official-defends-racism-nationalism-and-xenophobia)

deputy assistant secretary for refugees and migration Andrew Veprek not only defended nationalism,

he claimed that title for Donald Trump while “softening language” on racism.

Donald Trump has withdrawn the US (https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/19/politics/haley-pompeo-human-rights-bias/index.html) from the UN Council on Human Rights Council after the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights called Trump’s family separation policy "unconscionable."

Veprek also pushed to soften language about fighting racism and about racism in politics in his proposed amendments

to a UN Human Rights Council resolution titled "The Incompatibility between Democracy and Racism" that is

adopted without a vote, with much of the same language, every few years.

Veprek argued that it’s not the responsibility of national leaders to speak out against hate speech.

And he defended the term

xenophobia as being “malleable.”

Presumably meaning that what used to be considered irrational hatred and fear of foreigners … is the new normal.

it was clear that Veprek thought the complaints about racism, nationalism, and xenophobia were “aimed at the Trump administration,”

but the documents have actually been in use for several years.

It’s just that Trump’s policies so easily fit those terms.

Veprek was moved to his current position in April despite a lack of experience.

Senate Democrats wrote Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on May 1 to say the appointment was

"the equivalent of placing a lieutenant colonel into a one-star general position."

But it’s clear that Veprek has all the qualities to represent Trump around the world.

Unimaginable abuse of pregnant immigrant women was just uncovered at Trump’s ICE facilities

On Monday morning, Buzzfeed revealed that at (https://www.buzzfeed.com/emaoconnor/pregnant-migrant-women-miscarriage-cpb-ice-detention-trump?utm_term=.uhM1lzgkje#.jwP8bYeNLv) least

five immigrant women detained in ICE’s concentration camps have miscarried their babies while in custody and that their captors stood by and did nothing help them.

Multiple immigrant women, whose accounts have been confirmed by aid workers, have alleged that women in ICE and the Border Patrol’s custody are

“often denied adequate medical care, even when in dire need of it,

are shackled around the stomach while being transported between facilities, and

have been physically and psychologically mistreated,”

including

“an incident of physical abuse from CBP officers who knew they were dealing with a pregnant woman.”

When Rubia Mabel Morales Alfaro was caught by the thugs in the Border Patrol, they “threw [her] around.” When she told them

she was pregnant, they refused to believe her (https://www.buzzfeed.com/emaoconnor/pregnant-migrant-women-miscarriage-cpb-ice-detention-trump?utm_term=.uhM1lzgkje#.jwP8bYeNLv): “They said it wasn’t important, that it wasn’t their problem.”
Even though shackling is prohibited by both ICE directive and by Congressional order, a nurse who works with detained women in Texas says that

the women she sees are “almost always” shackled around their hands and feet, and often around their bellies.

Detained women must often wait days or weeks before seeing a health professional and are often ignored and neglected, even if they are bleeding profusely after a miscarriage.

“They were refusing to give me sanitary towels,

I needed like 30 per day and

we were given three per day.

They told me I could buy more in the commissary”

The Government Is Reportedly Trying to Make Migrant Women Pay for DNA Testing (https://splinternews.com/the-government-is-reportedly-trying-to-make-migrant-wom-1827498360)

As if the family separation horror show couldn’t get any more dystopian, the Daily Beast reports that the

Trump administration has told at least four women separated from children at the border that

they have to fork up the money for DNA tests so they can be reunited with their kids, according to an advocate.

“None of them have the money [for the tests], so it’s going to fall back on us to push back on that,”

Ruben Garcia, the director of the immigrant shelter in El Paso, TX where the women are staying, told the Daily Beast.

Per the Daily Beast (https://www.thedailybeast.com/government-told-immigrant-parents-to-pay-for-dna-tests-to-be-reunited-with-kids-advocate):

Three of the women are mothers of the children, Garcia said, and the fourth is attempting to reunite with her brother, a three and half-year-old boy.

Garcia said that the tests likely cost money that many immigrants entering the country with little more than the clothes on their backs don’t have.

Iliana Holguin, an immigration attorney in El Paso (https://www.thedailybeast.com/trumps-new-plan-for-immigrants-jail-them-on-military-bases) who works with Annunciation House, said the government made some of her clients pay between $700 to $800 to prove their relationship to a relative as part of their citizenship cases.
“The government wants the parents to foot the bill for the DNA testing when they’re the ones that caused the need for DNA testing,” Holguin said.

“It’s incredible.”

Catholic priest slams Trump’s Pastor for saying Jesus wasn’t a refugee: ‘What Bible is she reading?’

https://www.rawstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Paula-White-Donald-Trump.png

A Manhattan Catholic priest, Rev. James Martin, shook his head in disbelief in response to Paula White’s biblical comments about immigrant detention centers during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

White, serves as President Trump’s spiritual advisor. Recently, she visited an immigrant detention center. In an interview with the Christian Broadcast Network, White claimed that Jesus was not a refugee.

“I think so many people have taken biblical scriptures out of context on this,

to say stuff like, ‘Well, Jesus was a refugee,’” White said.

“Yes, [Jesus] did live in Egypt for three-and-a-half years.

But it was not illegal.

If He had broken the law then He would have been sinful and He would not have been our Messiah.”

( so simple, like she and her ignorant followers)

Martin said it was “appalling” that

she would use the bible to defend President Trump’s zero tolerance immigration policy.
“I wonder what gospel she is reading.

Jesus sets aside a lot of traditions.

He goes against Jewish laws.

He heals on the Sabbath.

He touches people who are unclean ritually and pure,” he said.

“Really Jesus’ whole point over and over again is that God’s laws supersede man’s laws.

Here is the Bible [being used to] validate kids being taken away from their parents, and it’s really appalling”

Half of the roughly 100 children under the age of five who have been separated from their families will not be reunited with their families, The Department of Homeland Security announced on Thursday.

A federal judged ordered that the government must reunited 103 children under the age of five who were separated from their parents after crossing the U.S. border illegally. On Thursday, the government admitted that 57 have been reunited, while 46 remain ineligible because “safety concerns posed by the adults," or the "circumstances of the adults."

if the gov can take kids away from legal usa citizens that are causing hard to kids the gov should be able to with the illegals

clearly those kids are abusing their kids especially under age 5 of getting into the usa

The Trump administration’s zero tolerance border policy may have led to the government separating a family of U.S. citizens. In a recent court filing (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4593366-Notice-Other.html), Immigration and Customs Enforcement admitted as much.https://lawandcrime.com/immigration/trump-admin-records-show-family-separated-at-border-might-be-u-s-citizens/

According to two U.S. Attorneys and six officials within the Department of Justice identified in the Tuesday filing, ICE itself tends to believe that U.S. immigration agents separated a family of U.S. citizens–and then lost track of the parent while keeping the child in the custody of an unmentioned government agency.

'We cannot take care of these inmates': Victorville prison strains to handle hundreds of immigrant detainees

Immigration detainees who were sent to a federal prison in Victorville last month were

Staffers at the prison also say they have not been given the proper resources or direction to handle the influx of detainees, putting both inmates and workers in danger.

True. My goof. Meant more along the lines Dems want to get them a tenable status here en masse so they can start voting like we're seeing the support for allowing non-citizen legals vote locally, which I don't mind at all. I feel the act isn't genuine tho and it feels Tammany Hall -huckster and great, more taxes to scalp from, but also a huge injection of lower class, impoverished into the population. You get them to vote locally and you set precedent for them to vote for Federal elections which scares the shit out of Repubs who have a very delicate handle on their voters as is.

I think the act is completely disingenuous on both sides- Dems don't care about the immigrant community they pander to beyond getting their vote and the Repubs dont care about the citizens they pander to with the "illegal aliens are here to take yur jerbs" boogeyman, it's just their only recourse to offset the Dems using Tammany Hall tactics.

the support for allowing non-citizens to vote is pretty small. i've only seen one article posted here about it, and it was only in the context of local elections. plus, that only extended voting to permanent residents. and its hard for me to not get behind that based on personal experience. my wife should be getting her green card in the coming months and has lived here legally for over 15 years now. grew up here. graduated from ucla. currently applying to med school. why the fuck should she not have a say? once she gets her green card, there's going to be something like a 3 year window before she can be a citizen. what is going to change so much in those 3 years when she arbitrarily gets citizenship status?

will never extend to illegal immigrants. that will never be on the table. and even potential pathway to citizenship stuff would only apply to a small fraction of illegals. mainly dreamers as far as im aware.

Concentration Camps?

Trump Is Taking US To An Evil Place

Every American, including native-born whites, should be alarmed about the advancing Trump administration plans to build mass detention facilities,

which could fast be turned into concentration camps to hold opponents of Trump policies.

Abundant signs reveal Trump administration planning for mass roundups.

News of these plans is out there but easily missed in the endless flurry of stories about Trump White House chaos.

The Trump administration acknowledges planning on mass detention camps designed, initially, to hold 20,000 people (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/21/us/politics/trump-immigration-border-family-separation.html).

plans to build concentration camps to hold 94,000 people in California alone.

the Trump administration is preparing to round up as many people as it suspects because they are not Anglo or African American, but appear to be Latino or Middle Eastern.

Our Constitution is a piece of paper. The liberties of the people depend on office holders acting with respect for it.

This was exactly what Trump promised voters, at least as it applies to people who are in the country without permission or live here with permission but have any record, even an unpaid parking or traffic ticket.

During the campaign,

Trump said again and again that he would round up every person.

When critics pointed out that perhaps 11 million such people live in America, Trump didn’t back off, he doubled down.

Trump campaign’s written statement was more cautious (https://assets.donaldjtrump.com/Immigration-Reform-Trump.pdf), but still chilling: “Illegal aliens apprehended crossing the border must be detained until they are sent home, no more catch-and-release.”

Think mass roundups of people Trump regards as enemies can’t happen here? Who would stop it?

the president is commander-in-chief and

the civilian bureaucracy, like all bureaucracies, does as it is told.

ICE’s own data reveals that it has seized about 1,000 lawful residents (http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-citizens-ice-20180427-htmlstory.html) including a father only because of his Hispanic features (http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-lawful-resident-released-20180629-story.html),

To build popular support for mass detentions, dictators and would-be dictators rally crowds with language designed to dehumanize people

Trump launched his campaign in 2015 calling Mexicans who enter the United States, legally or not, murderers and rapists.

This year he has called some Latino people “animals” and “vermin,”

For years he insisted he had proof that former President Barack

Obama was illegally holding office because he was born in Kenya, a lie that surveys show millions of Americans still believe.

Trump calls journalists “enemies of the people,” another slogan often used to justify rounding up and executing people en masse as well as to discredit inconvenient facts.

ICE agents in Memphis arrested a Latino journalist (https://www.mhpbooks.com/as-ice-detains-a-latinx-reporter-in-memphis-a-community-tries-to-stay-informed/), Manuel Duran, in what his lawyers say was retaliation for his reporting on policing issues including immigration enforcement.

Why is Honduras such a scary place?

The failed but ongoing American war on drugs,

which corrupts some of our police, prosecutors and judges. It also

corrupts whole countries including Honduras and Guatemala,

from which many families seeking asylum come.

That our government-trained right-wing death squads,

who bragged of their work to my late colleague Laurie Becklund during the Reagan era,

only adds to the reasons decent people flee north.

Detaining immigrant kids is now a billion-dollar industry

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Detaining immigrant children has morphed into a surging industry in the U.S. that now reaps $1 billion annually — a tenfold increase over the past decade, an Associated Press analysis finds.

Health and Human Services grants for shelters, foster care and other child welfare services for detained unaccompanied and separated children

soared from $74.5 million in 2007 to $958 million in 2017.

The agency is also reviewing a new round of proposals amid a growing effort by the White House to keep immigrant children in government custody.
https://storage.googleapis.com/afs-prod/media/afs:Medium:2084560038/800.jpeg

Currently, more than 11,800 children, from a few months old to 17, are housed in nearly 90 facilities in 15 states —

Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

They are being held while their parents await immigration proceedings or, if the children arrived unaccompanied, are reviewed for possible asylum themselves.

In May, the agency issued requests for

bids for five projects that could total more than $500 million for beds, foster and therapeutic care, and “secure care,” which means employing guards.

More contracts are expected to come up for bids in October.

HHS spokesman Kenneth Wolfe said the agency will award bids “based on the number of beds needed

to provide appropriate care for minors in the program.” :lol
The agency’s current facilities include locations for what the Trump administration calls “tender age” children, typically under 5.

Three shelters in Texas have been designated for toddlers and infants.

Others — including in tents in Tornillo, Texas, and a tent-and-building temporary shelter in Homestead, Florida — are housing older teens.

NRA Complaint: Child Detention Centers Are ‘Too Nice’

The NRA is promoting (https://www.mediamatters.org/video/2018/06/21/nratv-correspondent-immigration-detention-centers-if-anything-are-too-nice/220510) the ridiculous allegation that children who’ve been ripped apart from their families are being held in facilities that are “too nice.”

Chuck Holton, a correspondent (https://www.nratv.com/profiles/chuck-holton-profile) for the gun extremist organization’s propaganda outlet (https://shareblue.com/nra-waffle-house-james-shaw-jr/), NRA-TV, made the extraordinary claim

Holton then took his argument further and said, “I’ve visited those facilities. Those facilities, if anything, are too nice.”

“I’ve visited those facilities. Those facilities, if anything, are too nice.” :lol

The facilities have not been open to independent inspection

and several senators have (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/senator-to-tour-child-migrant-detention-facility-in-florida/2018/06/19/6330d37e-73d0-11e8-bda1-18e53a448a14_story.html) been barred from entering. Only government-approved photos and videos have come out (https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/homestead/article213570104.html) of them.

The bizarre NRA commentary is in line with how the extremist organization has oriented itself, especially during the Trump era.

Trump closed a little-known door for family reunification, leaving refugees stranded

The demise of the program was just the latest

rollback under President Trump of an Obama-era humanitarian relief initiative.

The current administration has abruptly ended programs including the

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-daca-guide-20180305-story.html) and

a case management program (https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/immigration-border-crisis/obama-era-pilot-program-kept-asylum-seeking-migrant-families-together-n885896)meant to keep asylum-seeking families out of detention.

The so-called Central American Minors program (https://www.uscis.gov/CAM) was created in late 2014 in response to a surge of tens of thousands of unaccompanied children fleeing violence in the region.

The program was billed as a safe alternative to a dangerous journey north through Mexico.

It allowed immigrants who were lawfully present in the U.S. to apply for refugee status or humanitarian parole on behalf of their children under age 21,

as well as their own spouses and grandchildren living in

El Salvador,

Guatemala or

Honduras. (aka "the Northern Triangle"

The program failed to stem the flow of unaccompanied children.

But it worked as a way to reunite some families.

Doris Meissner — who led the Immigration and Naturalization Service from 1993 to 2000 and now serves as director of the U.S. immigration policy program at the Migration Policy Institute — said that

“the CAM program, as modest as it was, was always an effort to create a safer way of coming to the United States for people who actually had an eligibility to come.”

“Cutting that off simply worsens what it is [the Trump administration] say that they’re trying to deter.”

Evangelical Christians Try to Defend Their Support of ‘Sinner Trump’ in Stunning Interviews: 'We Rationalize the Immoral Things Away'

Christians in the Bible Belt voted overwhelmingly for Donald Trump. How do they reconcile his actions with their beliefs?

“Oh, I feel like the Lord heard our prayers and gave us a second chance before the end times,”

he was directed to vote for Trump by the “Holy Spirit.” “That’s why we have the Holy Spirit,” Green explained.

Saying his support of the president is “like a gut feeling” despite Trump’s failings.

Green went so far as to defend Trump’s Un-Christain comments about taking strangers in, referring to when the president reportedly asked, “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries coming here?”“

Jesus Christ was born in Nazareth, and Nazareth was a shithole at that time,”

Green rationalized. “Someone might say, ‘How could anything good come out of a place like that?’

Well, Jesus came out of a place like that.” :lol

“A lot of his actions I don’t agree with,” she stated.

“But we are not to judge.” :lol

“George Washington had a mistress. Thomas Jefferson did, too. Roosevelt had a mistress with him when he died. Eisenhower. Kennedy.”

he is willing to look the other way because he believes Trump is anti-choice.

“I hate it,” he explained.

“My wife and I talk about it all the time.

We rationalize the immoral things away.

We don’t like it, but we look at the alternative, and think it could be worse than this.”

Hillary Clinton, who they described as “Of Satan.”

“She hates me,” Drew confided .

“She has contempt for people like me, and [First Baptist Pastor Clay Crum], and

people who love God and believe in the Second Amendment. :lol

I think if she had her way it would be a dangerous country for the likes of me.”

Violent Coup Fails in Nicaragua, U.S. Continues Regime Change Efforts

The violent coup in Nicaragua has failed (https://popularresistance.org/nicaragua-defeats-the-not-so-soft-coup/).

This does not mean the United States and oligarchs are giving up, but this phase of their effort to remove the government did not succeed.

The coup exposed the alliances who are working with the United States to put in place a neoliberal government that is controlled by the United States and serves the interests of the wealthy.

People celebrated the failure of the coup but realize work needs to be done to protect the gains of the Sandinista revolution.

The people of Nicaragua showed their support for the democratically elected government of Daniel Ortega with a massive outpouring in Managua (https://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Nicaragua-The-39th-Anniversary-Of-A-Triumphant-Revolution-20180719-0012.html) in a celebration of the 39th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution.

In addition to the mass protest in Managua, various cities had their own, in some cases very sizeable. ones.

“They're treating them like they're processed out of the facility already but they're still there,” Carson said. “They're still locked up. They're still detained. They can't leave. Kafkaesque:

The migrant parents in limbo at Port Isabel are given a three-letter designation, used internally by some officers, that highlights the uncertainty of their plight: ATW, according to Goodwin, or all the way out.

Except they’re not.

“It says [ATW] on their system when I go to visit them, but they're physically still there,” Goodwin said of her clients at Port Isabel. “I’ve gone twice to see them and the officers tell me, ‘Nope, you can’t seem them, not here … Can’t find them in the system’.”

U.S. says 463 migrant parents may have been deported without kids

More than 450 immigrant parents who were separated from their children when they entered the United States illegally are no longer in the country though their children remain behind,

As of Monday, 879 parents had been reunited with their children, according to the filing.

About 2,500 children were separated from their parents after the Trump administration announced a “zero tolerance” policy in April aimed at discouraging illegal immigration.

The policy was ended in June amid an international outcry about the government’s treatment of immigrant children.

On Monday, the government also said 917 parents were either not eligible to be reunited or not yet known to be eligible to be reunited with their child.

That number includes parents no longer in the country as well as those deemed unsuitable because of criminal convictions or

for other reasons. :lol

Immigration advocates have expressed alarm about parents deported without their children, saying it can create problems with the children’s immigration cases.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-immigration/u-s-says-463-migrant-parents-may-have-been-deported-without-kids-idUSKBN1KE029?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+reuters%2FtopNews+%28News+%2F +US+%2F+Top+News%29

for his fierce support of the price-gouging from the two companies that dominate telecommunication across all of America’s detention and correctional facilities.

These companies are raking in profits due to Trump treating thousands of refugees as criminals and detaining the separated families in cramped detention facilities.

According to NPR (https://www.npr.org/2018/06/21/622361903/-15-million-raised-for-immigrants-will-be-used-to-provide-legal-support) and the Texas Tribune (https://www.texastribune.org/2018/07/03/separated-migrant-families-charged-phone-calls-ice/), cash-strapped migrants are being forced to pay up to $8 a minute just to talk with their children.

"I am only to call when I have money, but when I do not have money, I am not able to communicate with my children," [the migrant mother] declared, adding that the calls are sporadic and often the phones do not work.

A spokesperson for DHS provided Buzzfeed a statement (https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/briannasacks/detained-migrant-parents-pay-call-kids)

denying that parents of children are being gouged, :lol

stating “calls between detained parents in ICE custody and their children are facilitated at no charge to detainees.”

This, however,

does not jibe with multiple accounts provided lawmakers and several court filings (https://static.texastribune.org/media/files/396a7b6e94c7ed4fba0a47e085a9caf3/Guatemalan-mother-of-3.pdf?_ga=2.134838132.483765772.1532305791-1908598998.1532305791) from grieving parents.

Illinois facility now under federal, state investigation following allegations from migrant kids (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/7/23/1782884/-Illinois-facility-now-under-federal-state-investigation-following-allegations-from-migrant-kids)

the Health and Human Services’ (HHS) inspector general and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services “have each opened a probe of Casa Guadalupe, a shelter in the Chicago suburbs run by the nonprofit Heartland Alliance,”

the group of children spoke out about their detention in facilities contracted by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR),

including Casa Guadalupe, alleging that

they were forced to clean toilets without protective gloves,

were threatened with having their blankets taken away if their cleaning was not satisfactory, and

two children saw a distraught boy named Adonias being forcibly drugged.

Both Diego and Diogo said that during classes given to detained children,

“a troubled” Adonias was “repeatedly injected with something that made him fall asleep at his desk.

The boy’s father had been deported, Diego said, and he often melted down during the daily classes.”

Diego said that he “was very scared. I thought they were going to inject me, too.”

In Casa Guadalupe’s case,

“an 11-year-old boy from Guatemala claimed he had been roughly dragged off a soccer field,”

while a “10-year-old from Brazil said he had been denied medical attention after breaking his arm.”

“The safety of children under our care is our foremost concern,” said Heartland Alliance spokesperson Barbara Hoffman. :lol

Jesse Bless, the attorney for Diego and Diogo said, “the investigation should extend to the government forces whose actions allowed this to happen.”

“The abuse reported” by families “is criminal,” tweeted (https://twitter.com/DavidLeopold/status/1021010380221550592) David Leopold, an attorney and former president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

“We must demand a no-bullshit top to bottom investigation of” the

Department of Homeland Security (DHS),

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE),

“the perpetrators,

from the WH on down to the rank and file thugs meting out the abuse in the child prisons, must be held to account.”

That includes DHS Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen, who lied (https://twitter.com/SecNielsen/status/1008467414235992069) and tried to claim the family separation policy didn’t exist in the first place (guess those separated kids came out of nowhere); HHS Sec.

Alex Azar (who lied and claimed that HHS could locate children in its care ‘within seconds,’ when in reality the administration has had to DNA test kids (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/7/5/1778244/-Officials-reportedly-DNA-testing-separated-migrant-kids-and-parents));

Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III;

White House aide and white supremacist Stephen Miller;

and, of course, Donald Trump.

“Children separated from their families at our Southern border as a result of President Trump’s unlawful and heartless policy have already endured far more trauma than any child should ever be forced to endure,”

seeking to cover its ass, ICE has requested permission to destroy records. make no mistake, ICE is seeking to erase US history.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement recently asked the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), which instructs federal agencies on how to maintain records, to approve its timetable for retaining or destroying records related to its detention operations. This may seem like a run-of-the-mill government request for record-keeping efficiency. It isn’t. An entire paper trail for a system rife with human rights and constitutional abuses is at stake.

ICE has asked for permission to begin routinely destroying 11 kinds of records, including those related to sexual assaults, solitary confinement and even deaths of people in its custody. Other records subject to destruction include alternatives to detention programs, regular detention monitoring reports, logs about the people detained in ICE facilities, and communications from the public reporting detention abuses. ICE proposed various timelines for the destruction of these records ranging from 20 years for sexual assault and death records to three years for reports about solitary confinement.

DOJ argues it's the responsibility of the ACLU to reunite families forcibly separated by the USG:

The Trump administration on Thursday informed a federal judge that it isn't responsible for locating deported parents separated forcibly from their children at the southern border.

DOJ said in a court filing that the American Civil Liberties Union, which represents plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit over family separations, should instead take the lead in reunifying deported parents with their children.

“Plaintiffs’ counsel should use their considerable resources and their network of law firms, NGOs, volunteers, and others, together with the information that defendants have provided (or will soon provide), to establish contact with possible class members in foreign countries,” DOJ said.https://www.politico.com/story/2018/08/02/deported-parents-children-trump-administration-aclu-721151

Trump’s New War on Immigrants

the White House’s plan is to make immigrants who have received any public assistance ineligible to become citizens.

(The Department of Homeland Security did not deny the plan’s existence to NBC.)

It is impossible to predict exactly how many people will be affected, but immigration experts think the impact will be enormous.

The new rules appear to use the broadest possible definition of public assistance—

one that includes Obamacare and children’s health insurance—

meaning that most potential new citizens will be ineligible for naturalization.

In 2016, the last year for which statistics are available, more than

seven hundred and fifty thousand immigrants became American citizens (https://www.uscis.gov/news/fact-sheets/naturalization-fact-sheet).

Trump’s immigrant family separation strategy 2.0 targets children as they return to school

Trump policy takes aim at families with American children who reside with at least one parent who is undocumented

less widely reported is the Trump administration’s targeting of the households in which close to five million U.S born children,

who as American citizens reside with at least one parent who is undocumented.

Earlier this year “with no fanfare and little public notice, the

Department of State has amended the Foreign Affairs manual to increase the burden of satisfying the public charge ground of inadmissibility for both immigrant and nonimmigrants,”

The term “public charge”

refers to the ability of an immigrant, or their sponsor to demonstrate to Federal immigration officials that they are not now, nor have they been in the past, nor anytime in the future likely to become dependent on welfare or a public health care subsidy.

Failure to make that proof would be sufficient grounds for deeming the applicant “inadmissible” to the United States and ineligible for permanent resident status.

The unilateral changes made by the Department of State targeted immigrant families already in the immigration legal system,

Under the new “field guidance” undocumented parents could be at

risk of deportation just because they decided to enroll their American-born children in the federal Children’s Health Insurance Program or to seek other tax benefits to which they are entitled.

the administration was using the benefits to which the American-born children are entitled as citizens as leverage against the undocumented parents the Trump administration has targeted for deportation.

they are saying,

if the immigrant’s U.S.- citizen children are entitled to certain public benefits . . .

that the children themselves receiving those benefits

can be grounds for their immigrant parent to be denied” their application for permanent resident status

which clears the way for their deportation.

“So, immigrants will no longer access these benefits for their children.

All of these policies as a whole have created massive fear in the immigrant community for interacting with any government official and that has all types of implications.

I have had clients tell me they are hesitant to enroll their (American citizen) children in public school.”

More Than 500 Children Are Still Separated. Here’s What Comes Next

Every additional day that children wait to be with their parents is damaging — it’s simple unacceptable that the government had information that could help reunite them faster but sat on it

as of 12:00 pm on August 16 (https://www.aclu.org/legal-document/ms-l-v-ice-joint-status-report-2), 565 immigrant children remained in government custody.

For 366 of those children, including six who are under the age of five, reunion is made all the more complicated by the fact that the government already deported their parents — without a plan for how they would be ever be located.

The government has argued (https://www.aclu.org/defendants-notice-regarding-implementation-plan-reunification-abroad) that families can only be reunited in their countries of origin. This means that children who have a current asylum claim may have to forfeit theirs in order be reunited with their parents.

If their parents don’t want them to lose the opportunity to seek protection in the U.S., children will have to navigate the asylum system without their parents, while bearing the weight of continued separation.

Parents who may have been misled or coerced into signing away their asylum rights will be left without redress.

Will Anyone in the Trump Administration Ever Be Held Accountable for the Zero-Tolerance Policy?

what the Trump Administration should do in the aftermath of the President’s failed zero-tolerance policy (https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/how-the-trump-administration-got-comfortable-separating-immigrant-kids-from-their-parents).

The policy, which

called for the criminal prosecution of anyone crossing the border illegally, and

led to the separation of more than twenty-five hundred children from their parents,

has coincided with a broader effort to dismantle (https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-trump-administration-is-completely-unraveling-the-us-asylum-system) the U.S. asylum system.

Yet the government never had a plan (https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-government-has-no-plan-for-reuniting-the-immigrant-families-it-is-tearing-apart) for keeping track of the separated parents and children once they were in custody,

“I definitely haven’t seen contrition,” an Administration official, who told me about the weekly meetings, said.

“But there was frustration with the incompetence of how zero tolerance got implemented.

From the perspective of the political leaders here,

there’s recognition of how badly the policy failed.”

no one in the Trump Administration has been held accountable

for its family-separation policy, even after evidence has steadily mounted as to its immense human costs and administrative failures (https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/social-issues/deleted-families-what-went-wrong-with-trumps-family-separation-effort/2018/07/28/54bcdcc6-90cb-11e8-8322-b5482bf5e0f5_story.html).

The government’s own data show that it has had no appreciable effect on migration patterns throughout the summer, but

the Administration pursued the policy anyway, targeting immigrant families.

“The Administration has not explained its rationale for prosecuting parents with children when that left so many other adults without children who were not being referred for prosecution.”

“It’s still baffling to me that no one has had to answer for this.”

, a former government official told me,

the prime movers behind zero tolerance were

members of a “cabal of anti-immigration guys” at the White House, the D.H.S., and the Department of Justice.

Stephen Miller and a Justice Department adviser named Gene Hamilton

led the discussion, the former official said.

“They want to have a different America, ( aka "no colored" :lol only "blood and soil" whites )

whether the outcry over family separation had caught the government by surprise.

It had, the official said.

“The expectation was that the kids would go to the Office of Refugee Resettlement,

that the parents would get deported,

and that no one would care.”

Yet, when it became clear that the public did,

the Administration chose not to change course.

US officers (allegedly) coerced migrant parents to sign documents they didn't understand:

A complaint filed against the Department of Homeland Security on Thursday alleges many parents were coerced into signing paperwork they didn’t understand and that they were verbally and emotionally abused while detained and away from their children.

In some of the cases, parents gave away rights to be reunited with their children when the non-English speaking mothers and fathers signed documents in English they could not read, according to the complaint provided to the AP before it was filed with the Department of Homeland Security.

In other examples, parents who had been reunited were threatened with another separation if they didn’t agree to be deported with their children, the complaint said.

The complaint was filed by the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the American Immigration Council, who say attorneys spoke with 76 parents who said they were asked to sign forms affecting their rights to reunify with their children.
All of them said they weren’t allowed to ask what would happen if they signed the form.https://theshow.kjzz.org/content/689879/ap-migrant-parents-coerced-signing-forms-they-didnt-understand?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=AP_CorpComm

Migrant Family Reunifications Slow To A Crawl As Trump Admin Still Labels Some ‘Ineligible’

the Trump administration told a federal court in San Diego that that number has barely budged, dropping to 528 nearly a month after the court’s deadline to reunite all of the separated children. Of the still-separated group, 23 are younger than 5 years old.

Of the children who remain separated, the Trump administration says 343 have a parent who was deported without them.

The Trump administration tried to argue in court that the burden should be on ACLU and other human rights groups to find all of the deported parents and ascertain their wishes for reunification.

“All of this is the result of the government’s separation and then inability and failure to track and reunite,” Judge Sabraw said.

“And the reality is that for every parent who is not located there will be a permanently orphaned child.

And that is 100 percent the responsibility of the administration.”

A few days later, the ACLU says, the Trump administration began providing the contact information.

“I think the judge reading them the riot act certainly helped,” Gelernt told TPM.

The Trump administration claims that 139 separated parents have said they do not want to be reunified with their child, though

the ACLU has submitted extensive sworn testimony to the court indicating that many of those parents were coerced or misled (https://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/aclu-accuses-trump-admin-of-misleading-parents-rushing-deportations) by ICE officials when they made that decision.

‘I would like to come back to the U.S. and join my child and seek asylum if that is an option,

because I was told the only way to see my child was to accept removal and give up my asylum rights.’

The Trump administration has also labeled dozens of the

still-separated parents either temporarily or permanently ineligible for reunification

because they found something in a background check or case file review that they consider a “red flag,”

“But based on the information we’ve gotten from the government so far, it doesn’t feel to us that any of the people should have their children taken away.

Some of the crimes listed are very minor, like possession of marijuana.

Some are not even convictions.

Some are charges.

Some are just allegations.

But even if they are all true, they do not meet the well-tested standards under state laws for what is sufficiently serious to take a child away.”

Your Honor, Can I Play With That Gavel?

The U.S. government expects children as young as 18 months to represent themselves in immigration court. Lawyers in Miami made a coloring book to help kids understand what they’re facing.

migrant children’s nightmares are just beginning once they set foot here, as documented in the video above.

Every child that crosses the border without permission has an immigration court case to fight, but there is no right to free counsel in that court.

So children, who sometimes speak only an indigenous language, are going up alone against government lawyers to fight to stay in the United States.

If that sounds absurd, that’s because it is.

Congress has the power to change this. :lol Repug Congress? :lol

Americans for Immigrant Justice (http://www.aijustice.org/) began to see an increase in young children needing legal representation.

We thought: How do we get toddlers to understand the gravity of their situation?

The stakes are high:

Over half (http://trac.syr.edu/phptools/immigration/juvenile/) of all children in immigration court are unrepresented.

Nine (http://trac.syr.edu/immigration/reports/359/) out of 10 (http://trac.syr.edu/immigration/reports/359/) of them will be ordered deported.

If we as a country are truly invested in protecting children,

the bare minimum that we can do is ensure access to a lawyer for immigrant children who cannot afford one.

US citizens hassled, detained, passports confiscated:

In a case last August, a 35-year-old Texas man with a U.S. passport was interrogated while crossing back into Texas from Mexico with his son at the McAllen-Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge, connecting Reynosa, Mexico, to McAllen, Tex.
His passport was taken from him, and Customs and Border Protection agents told him to admit that he was born in Mexico, according to documents later filed in federal court. He refused and was sent to the Los Fresnos Detention Center and entered into deportation proceedings.

He was released three days later, but the government scheduled a deportation hearing for him in 2019. His passport, which had been issued in 2008, was revoked.

Amazingly, this man’s story is not an aberration. “I’ve had probably 20 people who have been sent to the detention center—U.S. citizens,” Jaime Diez, an attorney in Brownsville, TX, told the Post.

Diez represents dozens of U.S. citizens who were denied their passports or had their passports suddenly revoked. Among them are soldiers and Border Patrol agents. In some cases, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have arrived at his clients’ homes without notice and taken passports away.

Slate's take on Trash/Miller/Kelly ethnic cleansing

Trump Administration Is Trying to Systematically Strip Citizenship From Many Americans Born Near Mexico Border

The next phase in the Trump administration’s effort to reduce immigration is to strip Americans who were simply born and raised near the border with Mexico of their citizenship by claiming their birth certificates and other birth documents are fraudulent.

an Orwellian-sounding process of “denaturalization (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/06/trump-administration-launches-denaturalization-effort-to-strip-citizenship-from-those-suspected-of-irregularities.html)” of American citizens that the U.S. government believed obtained citizenship through identity theft and fraud.

the government’s program of invalidating what appears to be almost exclusively Hispanic Americans’ citizenship,

by revoking passports of Americans born along the southern border,

is not a limited piecemeal effort.

It’s an active, if discreet American policy that’s being carried out against card-carrying citizens.

The pretense for the Trump government’s move to strip Americans of their citizenship is its belief that hundreds, if not thousands, of Americans born along the border from the 1950s to the 1990s were fraudulently issued American birth certificates by midwives and physicians.

The problem, the Post notes, is “the same midwives who provided fraudulent birth certificates

also delivered thousands of babies legally in the United States [and] [i]t has

proved nearly impossible to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate documents (https://www.bataraimmigrationlaw.com/citizenship-birth-by-midwife), all of them officially issued by the state of Texas decades ago.”

Think about what zero tolerance means. If your RGV parents couldn't afford a hospital delivery and hired a midwife, and didn't keep the receipts, could you prove native birth if the government took away your US passport and challenged your birth certificate?

I hope your momma and daddy kept your medical bills. Otherwise Trump might deport you to your presumed country of origin.

Trump’s Pick to Lead Refugee Efforts Is a Critic of Immigration

“To put somebody in charge whose track record consists of writing about how much he despises immigrants is just unfathomable.”

What the Trump administration did not mention is Mortensen’s views on immigration, which he chronicled liberally in blog posts between June 2009 and October 2017 for the Center for Immigration Studies (https://cis.org/Mortensen?type=All&page=0), a Washington think tank that supports reduced immigration to the United States; Mortensen is listed as a fellow at CIS (https://cis.org/Center-Immigration-Studies-Staff-List).

In those posts,

Mortensen

linked illegal immigration to ID theft and higher crime rates;

railed against Dreamers, who were brought to the country as children without documentation;

criticized efforts at reforming the nation’s immigration system; and

specifically targeted Senators John McCain and Marco Rubio, the Mormon church, and evangelical leaders for their support of those efforts.

It’s worth noting, however, that Mortensen’s blog posts were restricted almost exclusively to those who are in the U.S. illegally.

I did not find any post in which Mortensen criticized the asylum process that he will soon oversee if he is confirmed by the Senate,

or the global refugee architecture to which the U.S. is still the largest single financial contributor.

“I think it’s alarming to have people put forward who are so strongly anti-immigrant when the job requires building bridges to other countries and working to help people in need around the world,”

The laws that established quotas were indeed racist to the bone.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_Quota_Act
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_Act_of_1924

The Hart-Cellar Act did away with national origin quotas, but visa limitations are functionally similar:

No more than 7 percent of the visas may be issued to natives of any one independent country in a fiscal year; no more than 2 percent may issued to any one dependency of any independent country. The per-country limit does not indicate, however, that a country is entitled to the maximum number of visas each year, just that it cannot receive more than that number. Because of the combined workings of the preference system and per-country limits, most countries do not reach this level of visa issuance.https://www.uscis.gov/tools/glossary/country-limit

Immigrants Turn Down Fed Aid For Formula, Healthy Food After Trump Admin Threats

Immigrants are increasingly turning down federal assistance for formula for infants and healthy food for their kids in the wake of threats from the Trump administration that the use of government assistance could jeopardize immigrants’ green card chances.

public health agencies in at least 18 states have seen enrollment in WIC —

a nutritious food assistance program for pregnant women and families — drop by 20 percent.

The agencies told Politico that they’ve seen a significant uptick in phone calls from documented and undocumented immigrants asking to be removed from the WIC program

following reports that

the White House is considering using the acceptance of public assistance against green card applicants.

The proposal, which has been promulgated largely by White House adviser Stephen Miller, :lol Trash's Mr Racial Purity

would mostly impact legal immigrants already in the U.S. and those seeking to immigrate to America through legal venues.

WIC is one of the “least politically controversial” public assistance programs that the White House plans to earmark in its proposal because it aids children who are legal citizens, according to Politico.

The program gives pregnant mothers and low-income families vouchers to purchase baby formula and fresh fruits, vegetables, milk and other basic groceries.

WIC serves nearly half of all the babies who are born in the United States, according to Politico.

DHS to sidestep Flores settlement, will detain mothers and children indefinitely:

The Trump administration announced a new rule Thursday that would allow immigrant children with their parents to be held in detention indefinitely, upending a ban on indefinite detention that has been in place for 20 years, NBC News reported (https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/trump-admin-plans-hold-migrant-kids-indefinitely-defying-decades-old-n907006).

The rule, proposed by the departments of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services, goes into effect in 60 days and will allow Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to keep children with their mothers in detention facilities while their cases for asylum play out in court.

A DHS official speaking on the condition of anonymity said the purpose of the rulemaking is to terminate the 1997 Flores settlement agreement that said children could not be held in detention longer than 20 days.

sent to detention facilities in the Chicago area reveal kids “agonized over missing their parents and acted on their anguish by threatening to harm themselves or others,”

a group of nearly 100 migrant children who were separated from their parents due to the Trump administration’s barbaric “zero tolerance” policy and sent to nine area facilities operated by Heartland Human Care Services, under contract with the U.S. government.

There, ProPublica reports,

Erick has been put on at least three medications

to control his depression, aggression and emotional outbursts,

has had trouble sleeping and

Detention of Migrant Children Has Skyrocketed to Highest Levels Ever

Even though hundreds of children separated from their families after crossing the border have been released under court order,

the overall number of detained migrant children has exploded to the highest ever recorded

— a significant counternarrative to the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the number of undocumented families coming to the United States.

Population levels at federally contracted shelters for migrant children have quietly shot up more than fivefold since last summer, according to data obtained by The New York Times,

reaching a total of 12,800 this month. There were 2,400 such children in custody in May 2017.

Some of those who work in the migrant shelter network say the bottleneck is straining both the children and the system that cares for them.

Most of the children crossed the border alone, without their parents.

Many are teenagers from Central America, and they are housed in a system of more than 100 shelters across the United States, with the highest concentration near the southwest border.

Guatemalan parents reunited with son held in detention, but they're worried: 'He's not the same boy'

he began to speak quietly. His answers were short, his words slow.

The mother chalked it up to sadness.

But this week they learned of another possible reason for the change in their son. At a governmental reception center in Guatemala City where the family was reunited Wednesday, Lanuza and her husband, Erik Castillo, learned that

while in Chicago their 12-year-old son had been put on an antipsychotic drug called risperidone —

a powerful medication used to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

It’s also used to control extreme emotions, thoughts and behaviors.

Immigrant advocates have sued the U.S. government, charging that

more than 30 minors have been improperly medicated at federally contracted immigrant shelters without parental or judicial consent.

Justice Department attorneys :lol

have said that the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which oversees the shelters,

has the authority to medicate children without parents’ consent because the youths are in the agency’s custody.

In July, he was given the drug guanfacine, which is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Later, he was given fluoxetine, an antidepressant,

but was eventually taken off the medication because his aggression continued, documents show.

Abruptly halting treatment with risperidone can cause intense withdrawal symptoms, including irritability, delusions, hallucinations and other psychotic symptoms.

But the family didn’t know all that.

Now,

she wanted to take the boy to a psychiatrist before taking him off the drug.

She worried about the cost.

The family is still struggling to pay more than $5,000 they borrowed for the father and boy to be smuggled to the U.S., she said.

“He probably needs the medicine,” she told her husband.

“I’m his father. They never asked me for permission to give him this drug,” Castillo said. “He won’t need that drug anymore. Those drugs can be addictive. He’ll become dependent on it.”

Number Of Christian Refugees Admitted To The U.S. Falls Over 40% Under Trump

The Trump administration has made it harder for Christians — and all persecuted religious minorities — to find safety in the U.S.

In his relentless push to cut the number of refugees admitted to the U.S.,

President Donald Trump (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/topic/donald-trump) has ended up hurting members of a group

he once pledged to protect (https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-us-canada-38778322/president-trump-persecuted-christian-refugees-to-get-priority) ― Christians fleeing persecution

in countries where they are unable to freely practice their faith.

Early in his presidency, Trump promised his evangelical base (https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-us-canada-38778322/president-trump-persecuted-christian-refugees-to-get-priority) that Christian refugees would be prioritized.

the White House has made it harder for these persecuted minorities to find a safe haven on America’s shores.

According to State Department data (http://ireports.wrapsnet.org/), the number of Christian refugees admitted into the U.S. has declined dramatically

Between fiscal years 2017 and 2018, the number of resettled Christian refugees declined about 40 percent.

Compared to 2016, under Obama, this year’s number represents a cut of about 60 percent.

U.S. Targets Volunteers Who Aided Immigrants

Nine members of No More Deaths, an Arizona faith-based advocacy group, are facing federal charges,

including—for some—harboring and conspiracy.

Their crimes?

Providing food, water and a place to stay for migrants attempting to cross the U.S. border with Mexico.

According to a report from The Intercept (https://theintercept.com/2018/09/16/border-patrol-no-more-deaths-prosecution-arizona-immigrants/) on Sunday,

the Justice Department is

“fighting to keep the communications of law enforcement officials celebrating [the nine members’] prosecution from becoming public.”

The exhibits include text messages between a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employee and a Border Patrol agent, in which the Fish and Wildlife

employee declares ‘Love it’ in response to the prosecution of the volunteers.

Described in the text messages as

‘bean droppers,’ volunteers with the group No More Deaths and their organization

are referred to by name in the communications between federal law enforcement officials,

who describe, with apparent glee, the government’s ‘action against them.’

US govt child torture continues

Federal Agency Says It Lost Track of 1,488 Migrant Children

Twice in less than a year, the federal government has lost track of nearly 1,500 migrant children after placing them in the homes of sponsors across the country, federal officials have acknowledged.

The Health and Human Services Department recently told Senate staffers that

case managers could not find 1,488 children after they made follow-up calls to check on their safety from April through June.

That number represents about 13 percent of all unaccompanied children the administration moved out of shelters and foster homes during that time.

The agency first disclosed that it had lost track of 1,475 children late last year, as it came under fire at a Senate hearing in April.

Lawmakers had asked HHS officials how they had strengthened child protection policies since it came to light that the agency previously had rolled back safeguards meant to keep Central American children from ending up in the hands of human traffickers

Trump Funneled $200 Million to ICE from National Security Agencies Even After Congress Criticized Its Spending: Report

ICE is out of control — but Trump is raiding other agencies' budgets to give it money to run even wilder.

this summer, Trump diverted a staggering $200 million from agencies across the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) into the ICE budget.

In addition to FEMA, agencies affected include the
Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office,
the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers,
the Coast Guard,
the Transportation Security Administration,
the cybersecurity office, and :lol
Customs and Border Protection.

Trump's zeal to build up funding for a law enforcement agency notorious for civil rights violations (https://www.aclu.org/issues/immigrants-rights/ice-and-border-patrol-abuses) and abuse of immigrants (https://immigrationimpact.com/2018/07/10/investigation-ice-abuse-immigrant-detention-centers/) is disturbing,

particularly since Congress deliberately sets ICE's funding where it is to make them prioritize enforcement properly.
According to CNN, even Republican-controlled committees in Congress have criticized ICE for its profligate spending:

The House's 2017 explanatory statement for homeland security funding for that fiscal year, as preserved in the Congressional Record, called

"financial management weaknesses" a continued "particular problem" with ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations.
"The lack of fiscal discipline and cavalier management of funding for detention operations,

evidenced by inaccurate budget formulation and uneven execution,

seems to be the result of a perception that ERO is funded by an indefinite appropriation," the statement said.

Evil': Worst Fears Realized as ICE Arrests Dozens of Family or Guardians Attempting to Retrieve Children From Detention

"If they can't separate families, then lock them up, gut asylum standards, and, now,

arrest family members who come forward to sponsor loved ones."

Confirming the fears of many immigrant families who have declined to step forward and claim children who are being held in detention facilities,

a new report shows that more than 40 people have been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after doing just that.

CNN reported (https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/20/politics/ice-arrested-immigrants-sponsor-children/index.html)Thursday that between July and early September, at least

41 people have been detained after attempting to retrieve their young family members from government-run detention facilities,

The Man Behind Trump’s ‘Invisible Wall’

USCIS Director Lee Francis Cissna is

the son of an immigrant,

the son-in-law of a refugee and

a man who says he’s just obsessed with the fair implementation of laws. :lol

So why is he making them so much harder for immigrants?

a number of less scrutinized, more arcane reforms :lol reforms? :lol

were quietly working their way into the most foundational laws governing U.S. immigration.

One was the establishment of a “denaturalization task force” that pledges to investigate immigration fraud and strip away citizenship in such cases—something that’s historically been reserved for serious criminals or terrorists.

Another was a new memo that allows visa officers to deny applications without first requesting more evidence or notifying an applicant.

Then there’s the refugee program, which has been decimated as the administration slashes the level of admissions and redirects its resources to domestic asylum cases—people who have already arrived safely in the United States.

And coming soon:

a controversial proposed regulation that could prevent immigrants from obtaining green cards

if they or their family members have used a public benefit, which is expected to include everything from food stamps to health insurance programs.

Lee Francis Cissna, the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services,

an agency that not only facilitates legal immigration, but historically celebrates it.

Miller is rightly seen as the mastermind of Trump’s far-reaching immigration crackdown, but

Cissna is arguably just as important because he makes it happen.

Why Did Mike Pompeo Slash the Number of Refugees Allowed in the United States?

Pompeo wanted the number to be consistent with where it was for the current year, after the Trump Administration set it at forty-five thousand—the lowest level since the refugee program began, nearly forty years ago.

He was at odds with an influential figure at the White House, however:

President Trump (https://www.newyorker.com/tag/donald-trump)’s senior policy adviser, Stephen Miller (https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/how-stephen-miller-single-handedly-got-the-us-to-accept-fewer-refugees).

When it became clear that Pompeo supported forty-five thousand,

Miller arranged to have the official meeting cancelled.

the Trump Administration announced its plan—

it will reduce the annual refugee cap to thirty thousand.

It was Pompeo who made the announcement, at a press conference in the State Department Treaty Room, but

“Miller’s takeover of the State Department is now complete,”

Miller also allegedly took measures to undercut any senior Administration official who could challenge his position.

after a meeting of officials from the State Department, D.H.S., and the Department of Defense, the White House issued a “summary of conclusions,” which mischaracterized the positions of the Department of Defense and the State Department.

officials who reportedly clashed with Miller on refugee policy—such as Larry Bartlett, at the State Department, and Jennifer Arangio, at the N.S.C.—have been sidelined (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-diplomacy-refugees-exclusive/exclusive-senior-state-dept-refugee-official-sidelined-sources-idUSKBN1EY2DX) or fired.

Nooses in cells, rotting teeth — report details harsh conditions at Adelanto immigration facility

A Nicaraguan man who was detained at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center died in March 2017 after he was found hanging in his cell from his bedsheets. Not long after, two other detainees also used sheets in an attempt to hang themselves.

When federal officials arrived in May of this year for a surprise inspection of the privately run immigration detention facility, they found nooses made from bedsheets in 15 of 20 cells.

“When we asked two contract guards who oversaw the housing units

why they did not remove the bedsheets, they echoed it was not a high priority,”

many problems posing “significant health and safety risks” identified by federal inspectors at Adelanto, which can house nearly 2,000 detainees as they await the outcome of their immigration cases.

Detainees reported waiting “weeks and months” to see a doctor, and inspectors met with

a dentist who dismissed the necessity of fillings, and

suggested that detainees use string from their socks to floss,

detainees were commonly subjected to disciplinary segregation before being found guilty of violating rules.

The Ongoing, Avoidable Horror of the Trump Administration’s Texas Tent Camp for Migrant Kids

The detention camp (https://www.newyorker.com/news/dispatch/a-closeup-of-the-governments-new-tent-camp-for-migrant-kids) for migrant kids in Tornillo, Texas, was supposed to be gone by now.

Set up as a temporary “emergency influx shelter” in June, when the government was running out of places to put the kids it was tearing from parents at the border, the camp, located in the desert forty miles southeast of El Paso, was originally scheduled to close on July 13th.

the facility’s capacity was also recently increased, so that

it could accommodate up to thirty-eight hundred kids—some ten times as many kids as it was housing in June. “[T]he intent is to use these temporary facilities only as long as needed,”

The government has discussed Tornillo as if

it’s a necessary response to a crisis “when it’s not a crisis,”

Bob Carey, a former H.H.S. official, told me on Monday. Carey ran the Office of Refugee Resettlement, the branch of H.H.S. responsible for the care of migrant kids, during the final two years of the Obama Administration.

Tornillo was, and is, “a consequence of the actions of the Administration,” he said.

while public attention moved on,

the number of kids in government custody has only gone up. As the Times reported,

there are now more than thirteen thousand migrant kids in government facilities, five times more than a year ago,

and those kids are spending an

average of fifty-nine days in custody, twice as long as a year ago.

“They’re treating these kids like criminals,” another Obama-era H.H.S. official told me.

“That comes at a significant cost to the kids, to their mental health.”

In June, as the Times reported, “federal authorities announced that potential sponsors and other adult members of their households would have to submit fingerprints, and that the data would be shared with immigration authorities.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has acknowledged arresting dozens of people who came forward to be sponsors.
With the way the numbers are trending, it’s hard to see how the need for the tent camp at Tornillo will end.

even though Nunes’ family reportedly employs undocumented immigrants.

Esquire’s Ryan Lizza, who found that the Iowa dairy farm owned by Nunes’ parents has employed undocumented workers.

One source told Lizza that he repeatedly referred undocumented immigrants to the Nunes farm for work, and another man said he had worked on the Nunes farm for 4 years as an undocumented immigrant.

Lizza was able to uncover these details despite a campaign (https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a23471864/devin-nunes-family-farm-iowa-california/) of intimidation that included several Nunes family members following him around town as he worked on the story. Trump’s Immigration Crackdown Is Blowing Holes In Agency Budgets

Two years of shock-and-awe tactics have altered the missions of several federal departments and left others scrambling for money. And the policy isn’t even working.

Two years in, President Donald Trump (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/topic/donald-trump)’s promised immigration (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/topic/immigration) crackdown is hardly on pace to deliver his stated goal of deporting up to 3 million people (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-deport-3-million_us_5828ad2be4b0c4b63b0d22f1).

But it has produced something else:

gaping budget holes that the administration (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/topic/trump-administration/) has scrambled to fill.

the president has repeatedly ordered sweeping and often improvised changes that gave federal agencies a greater stake in immigration enforcement but muddled their missions.

The sudden policy shifts sparked self-inflicted crises that

regularly required band-aid solutions far more expensive than the status quo.

And to pay for it all, the administration

pulled money from federal agencies that have nothing to do with immigration ― including
cancer research,
Head Start and the
Federal Emergency Management Agency.

It’s policymaking for the Trump era:

rushed, chaotic, expensive —

and ultimately self-defeating.

A Tent Camp For The Price Of A Luxury Hotel

$750 per night, per bed (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/12/us/migrant-children-detention.html).

For about the same price, the federal government could pay for a deluxe hotel room — with a view of Central Park — at Trump’s Manhattan hotel.

For every month that the Trump administration locks up a single undocumented minor in the Texas desert,

it pays more than the annual cost of putting a student through state college, complete with room and board.

HHS reshuffled about $260 million last month from other parts of its budget,

Among the losers in the battle of priorities are cancer research ($13.3 million), Head Start preschool ($16.7 million) and HIV prevention ($5.7 million).

“They’re overwhelming us,” Dana Leigh Marks, a spokeswoman for the National Association of Immigration Judges, told HuffPost.

“The number of immigration cases coming in continues to be crippling to the court.”

To fund detention and deportation operations, Homeland Security pulled $13 million from Homeland Security Investigation’s domestic investigation budget and an additional $270,000 from its international operations.

The Coast Guard and Transportation Security Administration coughed up tens of millions each.

the Justice Department is spending hundreds of millions of dollars detaining and prosecuting people the Department of Homeland Security aims to deport anyway.

by all the most obvious metrics, it has failed to meet its goals.

With the first three quarters of this year tallied, ICE is on track to deport about 250,000 migrants —

well below the more than 409,000 removals registered in 2012. :lol

with one month left to tally for the fiscal year, arrests for illegal border crossings stand at about 355,000.

Those numbers are among the lowest registered since the 1970s.

But they’re up, modestly, over the previous year,

indicating that Trump’s massive spending —

aimed squarely at scaring potential migrants from trying to cross the border —

isn’t working.

Kavanaugh backs Trump administration on jailing and deporting immigrants for crimes committed years earlier

Newly seated Justice Brett Kavanaugh spoke up Wednesday in defense of the Trump administration’s view that

legal immigrants with criminal records must be arrested and held for deportation,

even years after they were convicted and completed their sentences.

The debate focuses on when, exactly, is when.

the mandatory detention policy has been applied to lawful immigrants who had lived and worked in the community for decades after being convicted of misdemeanors such as drug possession charges.

The administration argues that a provision of the 1996 law calls for arresting and jailing such immigrants despite their good records since serving their time.

Trump is separating an unknown number of families at the border for “fraud”

A new report finds that official family separation statistics

don’t count grandparents split from grandkids, or

parents whose kids are taken due to “insufficient” documentation.

The Trump administration has separated more families at the US-Mexico border (https://www.vox.com/2018/9/13/17853770/children-separated-news-update-parents-trump) than it’s previously admitted —

including untold numbers that were never officially counted as “separations” because

Border Patrol agents claimed the people they were separating weren’t actually families.

And those unofficial separations are likely still ongoing.

The report calculates that more than 6,000 people (including at least 3,000 children) were separated from relatives at the border from late spring to mid-August

(with the bulk of those separations happening before the end of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy, after a public outcry, in late June).

the report also sheds light on another tool that immigration agents have used to separate families:

alleging that the family isn’t really a family at all.

(CBP) officials told Amnesty that cases of suspected “fraud” aren’t reliably counted as separations.

fraud allegations can be used to separate families after they’ve presented themselves legally for asylum at a port of entry (https://www.vox.com/explainers/2018/8/6/17501404/trump-asylum-separate-legal-definition).

Border officials may be continuing to separate families as a punitive measure by accusing them of fraud — even after the purported end of the separation policy.

“The total number of families forcibly separated, and the trauma they have endured under this abusive practice, are still coming to light,” the Amnesty report says.

But part of that slow process of discovery is realizing how much will never be known.

The Five-Year-Old Who Was Detained at the Border and Persuaded to Sign Away Her Rights

https://media.newyorker.com/photos/5bbf993cfeaac92d0fd609a3/master/w_1298,c_limit/Stillman-HelenCaseB.jpg

Helen—a smart, cheerful five-year-old girl—is an asylum seeker from Honduras.

This summer, when a social worker asked her to identify her strengths, Helen shared

her pride in “her ability to learn fast and

express her feelings and concerns.”

She also recounted her favorite activities (“playing with her dolls”),

her usual bedtime (“8 p.m.”), and

her professional aspirations (“to be a veterinarian”).

Noehmi said that the official told her,

“Don’t make things too difficult,” and

pulled Helen from her arms.

“The girl will stay here,” he said,

“and you’ll be deported.”

Helen cried as he escorted her from the room and out of sight.

The next day, authorities—likely from the Office of Refugee Resettlement (O.R.R.)—called to say that

they were holding Helen at a shelter near Houston;

according to Noehmi, they wouldn’t say exactly where.

Noehmi and Jeny panicked.

Unable to breathe amid her distress, Noehmi checked herself into a local hospital,

Trump administration weighs new family-separation effort at border

The White House is actively considering plans that could again separate parents and children at the U.S.-Mexico border, hoping to reverse soaring numbers of families attempting to cross illegally into the United States,

One option under consideration is for the government to detain asylum-seeking families together for up to 20 days, then give parents a choice —

stay in family detention with their child for months or years as their immigration case proceeds, or

allow children to be taken to a government shelter so other relatives or guardians can seek custody.

they feel compelled to do something, and officials say senior White House adviser Stephen Miller is advocating for tougher measures because he believes the springtime separations worked as an effective deterrent to illegal crossings.

At least 2,500 children were taken from their parents over a period of six weeks.

Crossings by families declined slightly in May, June and July before surging again in August (https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/stats/sw-border-migration).

September numbers are expected to be even higher (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/migrant-families-overwhelm-detention-capacity-in-arizona-prompting-mass-releases/2018/10/09/4ba11f8a-cbe0-11e8-920f-dd52e1ae4570_story.html?utm_term=.20f1b03ce835).

Miller and others are determined to act

Any effort to expand family detentions and resume separations would face multiple logistical and legal hurdles.

U.S. District Judge Dana M. Sabraw, who ordered the government to reunite separated families in June, sanctioned the binary choice approach in one of his rulings.

“practical and legal barriers” remain to using that approach in the future,

noting that Sabraw also held that a “government practice of family separation without a determination that the parent was unfit or presented a danger to the child” would likely violate due process.

The report said releasing families together in the United States is “the only clearly viable option under current law (https://fas.org/sgp/crs/homesec/R45297.pdf).”

THE US IS CHECKING IMMIGRANT KIDS’ TEETH TO SEE IF THEY ACTUALLY BELONG IN ADULT DETENTION

In the U.S. immigration system, the difference between being 17 and 18 is a crucial one.

Undocumented minors who cross the border are housed under the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

They stay in shelters, not detention centers, and they are on a path to be released to family-member sponsors.

They also receive special protections under the law. Immigrants 18 and older, however, fall under the jurisdiction of ICE.

They are often kept in detention centers that are akin to prisons.

ORR contractors and ICE sometimes turn to a highly disputed science to determine how old the immigrants are: forensic odontology.

ORR and its contractors work with specialized dentists to conduct “age assessment” reports on minors suspected of being adults.

Immigrant detainees are X-rayed, and those images are sent to a forensic dentist, who looks at the person’s wisdom teeth and performs a statistical analysis, factoring in a person’s race and gender using studies on different dental populations.

Neither ORR nor ICE discloses how many of these assessments are orde

U.S. courts abruptly tossed 9,000 deportation cases. Here's why

The Supreme Court case involved Wescley Fonseca Pereira, a Brazilian immigrant who overstayed his visa and was put into deportation proceedings in 2006.

The initial paperwork he was sent

did not state a date and time of appearance, however, and

Pereira said he did not receive a subsequent notice telling him where and when to appear.

When he failed to show up in court, he was ordered deported.

The Supreme Court ruled that paperwork failing to designate a time and place didn’t constitute a legal notice to appear in court.

The ruling sparked a frenzy of immigration court filings.

Over ten weeks this summer, a record 9,000 deportation cases, including Barrios’, were terminated as immigration attorneys raced to court with challenges to the paperwork their clients had received,

Federal immigration officials not only have a record number of immigrants locked up in detention facilities,

the agency also has thousands more people in custody than Congress has budgeted for.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Daily Beast reports, (https://www.thedailybeast.com/ice-is-imprisoning-a-record-44000-people?ref=home) is refusing to say where the additional funding is coming from.

“ICE recently reported to Congress that, as of October 20, its average daily population in detention had reached

44,631 people,” approximately “4,000 more people than Congress has funded.”

And the extra cash?

September may offer a clue, when the Trump administration funneled tens of millions of dollars (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/9/13/1795518/-Funneling-money-from-FEMA-to-migrant-detention-harms-us-with-any-disaster-we-face) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to lock up families.

“In September, when I discovered that ICE had been reprogramming FEMA dollars to pay for immigrant detention centers,

“I wasn’t given the information as a member of the Senate appropriations committee.

U.S. Family Separation: 129 Kids Won't Be Reunited With Parents
About a hundred migrant children separated from their families by immigration authorities when crossing the U.S. border without documents won’t be reunited with their families,

months after the ‘Zero Tolerance’ separation policy there are 147 children still under Federal custody (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/20/us/family-separation-migrant-children.html), some of which won’t be returned to their families.

30 of those children were declared ineligible for reunification because of the parents’ criminal records,

even though some of them refer to minor crimes that don’t really affect their capacity to take care of their children,

The parents of the remaining 117 children have already been deported to their home countries, further complicating the reunification process.

But there are groups of volunteers and social organizations looking for them in Central America and elsewhere,

locating the relatives or parents of at least 106 of them.

Seven of them are asking for their children to be returned home,

but the remaining 99 stated that they would rather have them safe in a remote country that face the conditions they would experience in their country of origin, waving to their rights for reunification.

That means at least 129 children won't be reunited with their families.

the children will be placed with sponsors or remain in the agency’s custody “until their day in immigration court or until they turn 18.”

Homeland Security wanted to help track separated families at the border — but the White House said no

Scott Shuchart explained that not only was Homeland Security never consulted about Trump’s new Executive Order that separated families at the border when they sought asylum.

“If you’re going to separate families in the pursuit of an immigration policy,

it was irresponsible

to push that on top of a system that wasn’t prepared on the backend to allow the families to be reconciled later,”

“We would’ve had advice on the way that needed to be done, on the recordkeeping that needed to be done.

And our advice on that wasn’t sought out. And when we tried to provide it, it was ignored,”

He noted that there were parents removed from the United States and taken to other countries without records about where their child was.

The Trump administration claimed 2600 children were taken from their parents,

but records show that number was closer to 5,000.

The Trump administration’s latest attack on immigrants, a proposed rule (https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2018/10/10/2018-21106/inadmissibility-on-public-charge-grounds) that would punish families for accessing public benefits, has rightfully come under fire for its potential to threaten children’s health and impose financial hardship on households and communities.

one part of the proposal has received less attention:

a bizarre plan for officials to use immigrants’ personal credit information (credit reports and scores) as part of the assessment to qualify for a green card or visa.

Using an irrelevant measure like a credit score to assess immigration status is not only absurd,

it puts the federal government’s stamp of approval on the growing misuse of credit information that impacts all Americans.

Trump's latest racist attack on immigrants echoes Nazi propaganda

There are deeply pernicious trends in the president's rhetoric.

President Donald Trump employed a false and malicious rhetorical attack Tuesday that has been

echoed by both Fox News and Nazi propaganda.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office,

Trump suggested falsely that a border wall could help reduce the non-existent problem of disease outbreaks across the border.

you have a tremendous medical problem coming into our country...communicable disease,"

on Fox News (https://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/fox-news-migrant-caravan-smallpox-leprosy-tb), where one contributor baselessly asserted that immigrants were bringing in a range of diseases including smallpox — which has, of course, been eradicated in the wild.

there's absolutely no reason to believe that there's a serious threat of infectious diseases coming into the United States.

"No study or survey shows this. There is no outbreak or bump in disease attributable to immigrants."

the best way to fight the spread of these illnesses is vaccination (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/trump-vaccines-autism-links-anti-vaxxer-us-president-false-vaccine-a8331836.html), which Trump has also spread baseless fears about, not a useless border wall.

when undocumented immigrants (https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/immigration-border-disease-risk/) do experience outbreaks of infectious disease, it is often

because of the terrible conditions they are held in by the government when confined.

A recurrent theme in Nazi antisemitic propaganda was that Jews spread diseases.

To prevent non-Jews from attempting to enter the ghettos and from seeing the condition of daily life there for themselves,

German authorities posted quarantine (https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/narrative/2079/en) signs at the entrances, warning of the danger of contagious disease.

Since inadequate sanitation and water supplies coupled with starvation rations quickly undermined the health of the Jews in the ghettos,

these warnings became a self-fulfilling prophecy,

as typhus and other infectious diseases ravaged ghetto populations.

Subsequent Nazi propaganda utilized these man-made epidemics to justify isolating the “filthy” Jews from the larger population.

funny how you want to push your bs nazi narrative which you'd have to be a real pussy to believe in this day and age.

simple answer to all this; stay in your own fucking country and make it great but stay the fuck out of ours or deal with the consequences no matter how harsh they are!

Congressional inquiries into the death of Roxsana Hernández in ICE custody continue to escalate (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/12/12/1818672/-Congressional-inquiries-into-the-death-of-Roxsana-Hern-ndez-in-ICE-custody-continue-to-escalate)

An independently run autopsy found that Hernández,

a transgender asylum seeker originally from Honduras,

likely languished without care for days before she was transferred to a hospital, where she died in intensive care.

The forensic expert also found that she had likely been beaten before her death.

“The seemingly preventable death of Ms. Hernandez Rodriguez,” Thompson continues, “is just one of

11 deaths at adult immigration detention centers this year.”

Almost 15,000 Migrant Children Now Held At Nearly Full Shelters

The number of immigrant children being held in government custody has reached almost 15,000, putting a network of federally contracted shelters across the country near capacity.

The national network of more than 100 shelters are 92 percent full,

according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The situation is forcing the government to consider a range of options, possibly including releasing children more quickly to sponsors in the United States or expanding the already crowded shelter network.

Most of migrant children are teenage boys from Central America who travel to the border alone.

Many are escaping poverty or gangs, and they plan to ask for asylum and ultimately find work or go to school in the U.S.
