The decline of coffee production in the Northern Triangle is a real thing. Climate change changes agriculture and ways of life.

I wouldn't single it out as a sole cause -- I'd also include endemic corruption and political instability that came with a big assist from the USA over the last 120 years or so -- but on its face, the hypothesis that a changing climate can cause migration isn't outlandish.

The Syrian civil war started because farmers were wiped out, moved to the city, got no help from Assad, and started revolting.

Estimates of damage to the world's economy through 2100 run into the $10Ts.

US military, never missing a chance to go fuck up a country, is expecting AGW to cause widespread revolt and many govts falling.

AGW in the Central and South America regions is causing the growers to move further up mountains, if possible.

Don't agree with you much - but I do here...

Many reasons for people to flee their beloved homeland -

think about it - who wants to go to a place where they will have to start from scratch and be abused to boot?

It is survival and no wall, prisons or white supremacist tactics will stop this crisis and it will only get worse without some real honest planning, reform,etc...

I say -

Stop looking at it as a curse and look at it as a fact of life in our future. We can wall ourselves and say fuck the world -
but eventually - people will storm the walls and drag you down until you wished you had not ignored the problem and tried to pretend you were better than those who were suffering.

Put them all to work.

Start putting those seeking work - to work on our infrastructure and leapfrog into a leader into solar and fossil-free energy and truly make the country a spit-shiny new America.

No one thinks outside the box though and would rather criminalize these people who are trying to survive.

Those world-leading scientists that work on things like - finding solutions to the disastrous effects of climate change?

Oh - they just got told that they are being shut down by the Trump administration because Trump wants to deny climate change exists.

sadistic cruelty, CBP/ICE is your name

Alleged abuse by US border guards who forced detained migrant to wear humiliating sign around his neck reminiscent of Nazi camps

https://www.rawstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Border-Guard-humiliating-sign.jpg

“Guards are trying to assert total control over detainees, and to demonstrate that there’s nothing they can do to protect themselves.”

Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents forced a Honduran man at the El Paso Processing Center to hold a sign reading “Me gustan los hombre,” or, “I like men.”

“Whether the abuse is low-grade or rises to actual sexual assault, the point is the same,” said Pitzer.

“Guards are trying to assert total control over detainees, and to demonstrate that there’s nothing they can do to
protect themselves.”

“Border patrol agents have the maturity and mindset of schoolyard bullies—and far too much power,”

“The longer this kind of detention is allowed to go on,

the farther the camp system typically moves outside any legal remedy.”

Lack of consequences can lead to worse conditions which in turn have historically

led to the worst of humanity’s impulses being allowed to flourish in the concentration camp system.

the stage will be set to move into the next level of concentration camp abuses,

which tend to show up not as negligence but as atrocities.”

Hungry, Scared and Sick:

Inside the Migrant Detention Center in Clint, Tex.

An out-of-the-way border station in the desert outside of El Paso has become the
epicenter of outrage over the Trump administration’s policies on the southwest border.

the men and women who work there were grappling with the stuff of nightmares.

Outbreaks of scabies, shingles and chickenpox were spreading among the hundreds of children who were being held in cramped cells, agents said.

The stench of the children’s dirty clothing was so strong it spread to the agents’ own clothing —

people in town would scrunch their noses when they left work.

The children cried constantly.

One girl seemed likely enough to try to kill herself that the agents made her sleep on a cot in front of them,

so they could watch her as they were processing new arrivals.

“It gets to a point where you start to become a robot,”

following orders to take beds away from children to make more space in holding cells, part of a daily routine that he said had become “heartbreaking.”

the agency’s leadership knew for months that some children had no beds to sleep on, no way to clean themselves and sometimes went hungry. Its own agents had raised the alarm, and found themselves having to accommodate even more new arrivals.

FBI, ICE find state driver’s license photos are a gold mine for facial-recognition searches

A cache of records shared with The Washington Post reveals that agents are scanning millions of Americans’ faces without their knowledge or consent.

federal investigators have turned state departments of motor vehicles databases into the bedrock of an unprecedented surveillance infrastructure.

Police have long had access to fingerprints, DNA and other “biometric data” taken from criminal suspects.

But the DMV records contain the photos of a vast majority of a state’s residents, most of whom have never been charged with a crime.

federal investigators have turned facial recognition into a routine investigative tool. Since 2011, the FBI has logged more than 390,000 facial-recognition searches of federal and local databases, including state DMV databases,

The records show the technology already is tightly woven into the fabric of modern law enforcement. They detailed the regular use of facial recognition to track down suspects in low-level crimes, including cashing a stolen check and petty theft. And searches are often executed with nothing more formal than an email from a federal agent to a local contact

“It’s really a surveillance-first, ask-permission-later system,”

“People think this is something coming way off in the future, but these [facial-recognition] searches are happening very frequently today. The FBI alone does 4,000 searches every month, and a lot of them go through state DMVs.”

Immigrant Children Sent to Chicago Shelters Are Traumatized and Sick, in Some Instances With Chicken Pox or Tuberculosis

Hundreds of children are being detained in shelters run by Heartland Human Care Services, which says it has made changes since allegations that children were neglected and mistreated.

The Trump administration is sending immigrant children who are alone, afraid and sick with fever, chicken pox and even tuberculosis to shelters in Chicago, where they are further isolated to prevent the spread of disease

In yet another byproduct of the administration’s immigration policy, many of those children also are arriving increasingly traumatized after spending a week or longer in dirty and overcrowded U.S. Border Patrol facilities.

Some of the children, who range from toddlers to teens, have been torn from their mothers and fathers at the border in spite of the government’s pledge to end separations,

Heartland officials said the children now arriving at their five shelters are exhibiting “behaviors consistent with trauma like heightened anxiety, and fearfulness” and have described to staff “horrible and inhumane conditions” at border facilities.

outbreaks of scabies, shingles, chickenpox (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/07/06/us/migrants-border-patrol-clint.html) and mumps (https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/14/politics/mumps-chicken-pox-quarantine-ice/index.html) at the facilities. Heartland officials said the spike in contagious diseases they are now experiencing is unlike anything they’ve seen before.

ProPublica Illinois last year investigated Heartland’s secretive network of shelters (https://www.propublica.org/article/illinois-chicago-children-teens-immigration-shelters-heartland) for immigrant children in Illinois and found repeated problems of

lax supervision (https://www.propublica.org/article/heartland-chicago-immigration-shelters-lax-supervision-sexual-activity) and troubling conditions,

including allegations of physical and sexual abuse and neglect.

State child welfare officials had cited Heartland for failures to provide appropriate supervision in cases involving

an employee having an alleged sexual relationship with a detained teen,

children having sex in a common room and

numerous runaways.

Trump Is Poised to Sign a Radical Agreement to Send Future Asylum Seekers to Guatemala

the Trump Administration (https://www.newyorker.com/tag/donald-trump)is expected to announce a major immigration deal, known as a safe-third-country agreement, with Guatemala (https://www.newyorker.com/tag/guatemala).

asylum seekers from any country who either show up at U.S. ports of entry or are apprehended while crossing between ports of entry could be sent to seek asylum in Guatemala instead.

Under this new arrangement, most of these migrants will no longer have a chance to make an asylum claim in the U.S. at all.

“We’re talking about something much bigger than what the term ‘safe third country’ implies,” someone with knowledge of the deal told me.

“We’re talking about a kind of

transfer agreement where the U.S. can send any asylum seekers, not just Central Americans, to Guatemala.”

it looks like even those who have never set foot in Guatemala can potentially be sent there.”

the crimes against humanity continue, the objectivization of humans continues

The US Is Quietly Opening Shelters for Babies and Young Kids Without Mothers

The federal government is quietly expanding its use of shelters to house infants, toddlers and other young asylum-seekers.

One Phoenix facility housed 12 children ages 5 and under, Reveal has learned, some as young as 3 months old, all without their mothers.

a dozen children arrived at Child Crisis Arizona starting in mid-June, after it garnered a $2.4 million contract to house unaccompanied children through January 2022.

Crisis Care Arizona, a nonprofit, was recently cited by state officials for deficiencies before the arrival of unaccompanied infants and toddlers. Inspectors from the Arizona Department of Health Services found hazardous conditions (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6189660-Child-Crisis-Loc-C-2019-citations.html#document/p2/a511891) in one location in February,

Inspections at three Child Crisis locations in Phoenix and Mesa over the past three years revealed 37 violations, including a lack of drinking water for children in classrooms, a missing lid on a vessel containing soiled diapers, an incomplete first-aid kit, and “dried yellow-orange liquid splatters on the base of one toilet.”

In Pennsylvania, meanwhile, Bethany Children’s Home is housing 11 children, including an unknown number of infants, on its campus in Womelsdorf,

Bethany Children’s Home was awarded a $3.5 million grant in late April to house unaccompanied children through early 2022.

a Bethany Children’s Home employee pleaded guilty (https://www.wfmz.com/news/berks/children-s-home-worker-sentenced-for-shocking-assault/996961759) to charges related to setting up a teen to be beaten by two others while on a school bus.

Another HUGE sickening Trash WIN

How Trump’s Safe-Third-Country Agreement with Guatemala Fell Apart

the Guatemalan government issued a statement cancelling a highly anticipated meeting, scheduled for Monday, in Washington, between Jimmy Morales, the President of Guatemala, and Donald Trump.

The subject of the meeting was a deal between the two countries that would allow the U.S. government to begin sending asylum seekers to Guatemala under the terms of a so-called safe-third-country agreement (https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/trump-poised-to-sign-a-radical-agreement-to-send-future-asylum-seekers-to-guatemala).

The idea was to outsource part of the American asylum system to Guatemala,

despite the fact that many of the Central-American

asylum seekers arriving at the U.S. border are Guatemalans fleeing poverty, hunger, and violence in their home country. :lol

“Opposition to the deal was widespread in Guatemala,”

the country’s Constitutional Court ...

Morales was forbidden from negotiating the deal on his own, without consulting the Guatemalan congress.

Top executives from 'nonprofit' federally contracted to jail migrant kids got $1 million paychecks (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/7/17/1872424/-Top-executives-from-non-profit-federally-contracted-to-jail-migrant-kids-got-1-million-paychecks)

Southwest Key CEO Juan Sanchez’s $3.6 million salary from 2017-2018,

five other top executives who received salaries of more than $1 million in 2017,

far eclipsing “the maximum amount of grant money that the government allows migrant shelters to use to pay an employee,

which was $189,600 last year.”

Tax records “showed that other prominent employees—including the

group’s chief financial officer, who earned more than $2.4 million—

were earning substantial, seven-figure salaries there.”

Sanchez’s wife, Jennifer, was not among them but was surely no less pleased with her direct deposit: $500,000.

“Three of the other officials who earned at least $1 million in 2017 also have left the group”

Judge blocks new Trump asylum rule

A U.S. judge in San Francisco on Wednesday stopped the Trump administration from enforcing a new rule that would bar almost all asylum applications at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Judge Jon Tigar in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California issued a preliminary injunction blocking the rule, enacted on July 16, that would require asylum-seekers to first pursue safe haven in a third country through which they had traveled on their way to the United States.

A different U.S. judge had allowed the new rule to go forward earlier on Wednesday in a separate lawsuit in Washington.

The ruling by Tigar, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, renders inconsequential the decision by the Washington-based judge, Timothy Kelly, appointed by President Donald Trump.

The rule will now be suspended pending further proceedings.

Top CBP Officer Testifies He’s Unsure if 3-Year-Old Is “a Criminal or a National Security Threat”

It was one of a number of disturbing revelations.

https://compote.slate.com/images/150cac91-07f4-4201-90e0-355e9d10cfb1.jpeg?width=780&height=520&rect=4992x3328&offset=73x0

Ted Lieu: Sofi is not a criminal or a national security threat to the United States as a 3-year-old, correct?
Hastings: I don’t know the background in this case, sir.
Ted Lieu: Do you know any 3-year-olds that are criminal or national security threats to the United States?
Hastings: No, I don’t.
Ted Lieu: Sophie’s grandmother was not a national security or criminal threat to the United States, correct?
Hastings: I don’t know—again, I don’t know the background of what her grandmother or relatives were.

the family separation hearing was full of revelations and is likely to have real-world consequences.

Hastings repeatedly contradicted his boss, Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan, including on a key issue pending before the same court that brought family separation to an end.

Hastings’ disastrous testimony could now be used in that court to end some of the administration’s ongoing separations that might be in violation of that court’s order (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/04/trump-family-separation-border-threats-sabraw-aclu.html).

the hearing was

a dramatic demonstration of what Democrats might be able to accomplish if they actually forced Trump officials to answer for the incompetence and cruelty that have resulted from the administration’s treatment of asylum-seekers and migrants.

the CBP official confessed what many (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/06/donald-trumps-family-separation-the-government-had-no-intention-of-reuniting-parents-and-children.html) had long suspected (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/07/more-evidence-emerges-that-trump-intended-for-family-separation-to-be-permanent.html) but that the administration has repeatedly denied against all evidence:

The Trump administration intended for family separation to be permanent.
many cases of family separation conducted by Hastings and his officers had been done in as inhumane a manner as possible.

Hastings could not explain in even the simplest terms how his officers had gone about removing children from their parents;

he further admitted there was no “minimum time” for warning parents they were about to be separated from their children perhaps forever.

The denouement came when Hastings confessed what the administration had long denied:

that there was no intent ever to reunite the families when the policy was first implemented.Hastings contradicted his boss one more time on the key point of ongoing family separations.

He testified that—per the court order—separations were continuing according to internal guidance that they only occur

if a parent is a danger to a child,

has committed a violent misdemeanor or felony,

or has a communicable disease.

Raskin: If a mother or father has HIV-positive status, is that alone enough to justify separation from a child?
Hastings: It is. It’s a communicable disease under the guidance.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services removed HIV from the list (https://www.uscis.gov/archive/archive-news/human-immunodeficiency-virus-hiv-infection-removed-cdc-list-communicable-diseases-public-health-significance) of communicable diseases that bar entry in 2010.

Ultimately, with family separation—as we also saw with the Mueller hearing and report (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/07/mueller-hearing-sound-bites-video-clips-memes.html?via=recirc_recent)—

all of the administration’s lawbreaking and lies about its lawbreaking may seem too dense for the general public to grok.

it’s really quite simple:

The Trump administration, in the words of the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, was doing “literal kidnapping.”

Many of the people who did the “literal kidnapping” are still there and would do it all over again if so ordered.

The acting Homeland Security secretary is lying about all of this in plain sight.

Indeed,

top administration officials lying (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2018/07/30/wilbur-rosss-false-claim-to-congress-that-the-census-citizenship-question-was-dojs-idea/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.a75b02a3b65d) under oath (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/30/opinion/census-citizenship-supreme-court.html) has become so common that it’s barely even news.

And Democratic leadership is terrified (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/07/nancy-pelosi-opposes-impeachment-even-after-mueller-testimony.html) of initiating the one mechanism for at least attempting to hold the president and his shock troops accountable.

Mexican concentration camps are worse

Overflowing Toilets, Bedbugs and High Heat: Inside Mexico’s Migrant Detention Centers

Migrants have been held in a wrestling arena, at a fairground and in government offices. They’ve been forced to sleep in hallways, on an outdoor basketball court, even directly on the hard ground.

Mexico’s detention centers have at times reached triple, quadruple and even quintuple their capacity.

Detainees at some centers have endured extreme heat, bedbug infestations, overflowing toilets, days without showers, and shortages of food and decent health care.

This iron-fisted approach

has helped lower the (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/10/us/border-migrants-remain-mexico.html?module=inline) number of migrants (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/10/us/border-migrants-remain-mexico.html?module=inline) trying to cross the southwest border of the United States.

But it has also resulted in a crisis in Mexico’s detention centers that, critics say, is

subjecting adults and children to inhumane conditions,

exposing the Mexican government’s lack of preparedness and

serving as a glaring rebuke of Mr. López Obrador.

More Than 100 Immigrants Were Pepper-Sprayed At An ICE Facility

Officials used pepper spray to quell a protest by immigrants in the Louisiana center’s yard

More than 100 immigrants were pepper-sprayed at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Louisiana this weekend

The detainees were pepper-sprayed at the ICE Processing Center in Pine Prairie on Saturday, just a day after guards pepper-sprayed more than 30 immigrant detainees at a separate facility in rural Louisiana.

The inmates at Pine Prairie — where more than 1,000 ICE detainees can be held at a time — were pepper-sprayed after they demonstrated in the center’s yard, the source said. The inmates were then taken to a separate part of the facility to be decontaminated.

Trash sent his goons to round up 1000s of parents and deport them, but ...

‘If you’re a good worker, papers don’t matter’: How a Trump construction crew has relied on immigrants without legal status

For nearly two decades, the Trump Organization has relied on a roving crew of Latin American employees

to build fountains and waterfalls, sidewalks and rock walls at the company’s winery and its golf courses from New York to Florida.

Other employees at Trump clubs were so impressed by the laborers — who did strenuous work with heavy stone — that they nicknamed them “Los Picapiedras,” Spanish for “the Flintstones.”

For years, their ranks have included workers who entered the United States illegally,

according to two former members of the crew. Another employee, still with the company, said that remains true today.

President Trump “doesn’t want undocumented people in the country,”

said one worker, Jorge Castro, a 55-year-old immigrant from Ecuador without legal status who left the company in April after nine years.

“But at his properties, he still has them.”

"Don't Look Away":

Videos and Images of Weeping Children and Loved Ones Spread as ICE Arrests 680 in Mississippi

"Children finished their first day of school with no parents to go home to tonight.

Babies and toddlers remained at daycare with no guardian to pick them up.

A child vainly searched a workplace parking lot for missing parents."

"many children of those arrested across the state are now left homeless with nowhere to go."

"These children," WJTV reported, "were relying on neighbors and even strangers to pick them up outside their homes after school and drive them to a community fitness center where people tried to keep them calm. But many kids could not stop crying for mom and dad."

young children of immigrants have lived in constant fear of their parents being swept up at any moment by President Donald Trump's deportation force.

"I've spoken to school employees in cities where there were no raids," noted Lind, "saying that

sometimes kids came in midday asking to call and see if parents were still home."

the "effect of ripping children from their parents at the border or stealing parents away from their children in Mississippi is the same."

Migrant Kids Separated at Border Faced Abuse in Foster Homes

after crossing the border into Arizona in May of last year,

Border Patrol agents tore the man’s 7-year-old son from his arms and

sent the young father nearly 2,000 miles (3,220 kilometers) away to a detention center in Georgia.

The boy, now 8, went into a U.S.-funded foster home for migrant children in New York.

the boy told a counselor he was repeatedly sexually molested by other boys in the foster home.

taxpayers could be on the hook for more than $200 million in damages from parents who said their children were harmed while in government custody.

The father and son are among dozens of families —

separated at the border as part of the Trump administration’s zero tolerance policy —

who are now preparing to sue the federal government, including several who say their young children were sexually, physically or emotionally abused in federally contracted foster care.

With more than 3,000 migrant children taken from their parents at the border in recent years, many lawsuits are expected, potentially totaling in the billions.

Conservative Evangelicals Aren’t Hypocrites, They’re Sadists

the formation of the church as a pure community saved out of, and against, the world, racial sociology, and probably more.

The perversity in all of this is first that people like this don’t want their ideas or perspectives challenged.

the social domination it protects is easily conflated with being the instrument of God’s righteous punishment.

Sadists always have to justify themselves.

Faith deployed in service of social hierarchy is also

easily conflated with authoritarian power structures,

Conservative white evangelicals respond to Trump not as a perfect or even good person,

but as an imperfect instrument of God’s work to maintain the sacred order of the world.

The cruelty is indeed the point (https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/the-cruelty-is-the-point/572104/)

because the cruelty manifests the justice that maintains the proper order.

All the evidence indicates that there’s a durable 25% of the US that is unassailably

committed to racial and sexual hierarchy.

That’s the firm base.

Xue Hui Zhang left a courtroom for lunch after giving

a deposition against his former employer, who owes him $200,000 in back wages.

Zhang and his attorney Adam Dong had barely made it to the diner entrance when as many as half a dozen Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents stopped them.

“While ICE has arrested people coming and going from courts, it has a memorandum of understanding (https://www.dol.gov/asp/media/reports/dhs-dol-mou.pdf) with the U.S. Department of Labor

not to detain workers in the process of suing an employer over workplace violations.” But that memo dates back to 2011,

Last year in Mississippi,

Koch Foods settled with Latina processing plant workers for nearly $4 million

after they alleged supervisors sexually harassed them, assaulted them, and forced them to work in overall “hostile” conditions.

Earlier this month, that Koch plant was one of several raided by ICE,

"The underlying rationale or reason for the two agencies having this [memorandum of understanding] is to ensure that undocumented employees can pursue their labor law rights without the fear of interference from ICE,"

The Trump Administration’s Sustained Attack on the Rights of Immigrant Children

On Wednesday, the Trump Administration announced a sweeping new set of regulations to gut the Flores Agreement. “It is a wholesale attack on kids in custody,”

according to Kevin McAleenan, the acting Secretary of Homeland Security, the government will detain families together for as long as it takes to resolve their immigration claims.

For tens of thousands of families, that could easily amount to months in custody

another critical component of Flores, a requirement that the government keep children in licensed facilities overseen by independent monitors, would also fall away under the Administration’s plan.

McAleenan claimed that “all children in U.S. government custody” would be

“treated with dignity, respect, and special concern for their particular vulnerability.” :lol Orwellian BULLSHIT

in Clint (https://www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/inside-a-texas-building-where-the-government-is-holding-immigrant-children), Texas, two hundred and fifty infants, children, and teen-agers spent weeks without adequate food and water, and were denied soap and toothbrushes; despite lice and flu outbreaks, authorities skimped on providing medical care.

Nearly three thousand children who turned eighteen while in detention were transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement because they “aged out” and were no longer treated as minors.

to devise a series of policies to restrict the number of asylum seekers entering the country. Among the proposals was

separating families at the border and

a move to end the Flores agreement.

“questionable legality.” :lol Trash/Miller don't need no steenkin' legality

The broader consequences of the Administration’s rollback could extend well beyond detention conditions.

“It’s about the next two to three years an immigrant child spends going through the judicial system.”

“The expectation is that the Administration will change the policy regarding the definition of an unaccompanied child. . . .

A child arriving at the border alone will not be declared unaccompanied if they have a parent ‘available’ in the U.S. to care for them.

That means the child will be subject to expedited removal.”

the regulations announced this week will further whittle away the legal rights of immigrant children.

“The change will end up in court immediately,” the official had told me.

But the Administration wanted to send a message anyway. :lol YES! all y'all racists do cheer the brutality

ICE and Homeland Security busted pushing right-wing propaganda and conspiracy theories

Multiple federal departments have been pushing far-right propaganda to federal employees.

“An arm of the Justice Department regularly sent summaries and links to articles from an online white nationalist publication over the last year, a BuzzFeed News investigation has found.

In addition, similar newsletters sent to the
Labor Department,
ICE,
HUD and
the Department of Homeland Security, included

links and content from hyperpartisan and conspiracy-oriented publishers,”

“In daily bulletins about media coverage for the department’s Executive Office for Immigration Review,

which runs the nation’s immigration courts, a government contractor sometimes included links to

VDare, an anti-Semitic and racist site whose editor who has claimed that American culture is under threat from non-white peoples.

That contractor, a Dade City, Florida-based company called TechMIS,

also compiles newsletters for other agencies including the

Department of Labor,
the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and
the Office of Housing and Urban Development,”

the Western Journal, a hyperpartisan publisher whose founder once questioned if then-Presidential candidate Barack Obama was Muslim, and

the Epoch Times, a newspaper associated with the Chinese Falun Gong movement and whose related media properties have backed QAnon, a conspiracy theory claiming a group of high ranking officials known as the ‘Deep State’ is subverting President Donald Trump’s goals,”

a long history in which

government agencies, and particularly law enforcement agencies, have promoted and enforced white supremacist and racist agendas.

This also unfortunately shows that many white supremacist and far-right publications that seem to be on the ‘fringes’ of society actually have huge mainstream influence and impact,”

“It shows an increasing effort to politically charge the perspective of immigration judges

who are being tasked with being neutral judges who apply the law,”

“The administration has been taking steps to make the court a political weapon

Shakeup of immigration court system threatens migrants’ due process

Congress has given migrants rights. A new rule appears aimed at making sure they don't exercise them.

Migrants may soon have a much harder time finding lawyers and understanding their rights in immigration court, as the Trump administration pursues a major overhaul of the agency that oversees those proceedings.

The crucial office that provides basic legal information to migrants and helps connect some of them to pro-bono immigration lawyers will be merged into a

Trump-created unit widely viewed as the nerve center of his immigration power grab.

The bureaucratic reshuffle leaves the assistance programs “buried deep in the bowels” of an agency that today “never does anything without some ulterior political motive relating to the restrictionist immigration agenda,”

the rule endows EOIR’s director with vast new power to change how immigration laws are applied.

Trump Administration’s ‘weaponization’ of EOIR as a means of implementing restrictionist policies by precedent decision without going through legislation or rule making,”

The Trump administration has repeatedly

pushed immigration judges to set aside those legal niceties

in favor of rapid removal orders for almost everyone they see.

Judges now face discipline if they fail to clear 700 cases per calendar year,

a speed judges have repeatedly said makes a mockery of due process.

Barr Is Packing Board of Immigration Appeals with Judges Who Denied Asylum Claims at ‘High Rates’

effort to reduce the number of successful migrant applications for asylum at the border.

Barr has promoted six immigrations judges to the Department of Justice’s Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) — all of whom have “high rates” of denying asylum claims,

The BIA has been given nationwide jurisdiction to hear appeals from certain decisions rendered by immigration judges and by district directors of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in a wide variety of proceedings

BIA decisions are binding on all DHS officers and immigration judges unless modified or overruled by the Attorney General or a federal court.

board’s decisions are to be recognized as binding policy by hundreds of immigration judges across the United States.

Cassidy and Wilson respectively rejected 95.8-percent and and 98.1-percent

of asylum claims between 2013 and 2018; the national denial average was 57.6 percent,

the other rejection rates added to the board:

Hunsucker, 81.6-percent;
Goodwin, 89.4-percent;
Gorman, 86.9-percent;
Couch, 92.1%.

Trump administration appears to violate law in forcing asylum seekers back to Mexico

Under the Migrant Protection :lol :lol ORWELL! Protocols — better known as Remain in Mexico —

Trump administration officials have pushed 37,578 asylum seekers back across the U.S. southern border in roughly seven months

One-third of the migrants were returned to Mexico from California. The vast majority have been scattered throughout Mexico within the last 60 days.

, the asylum seekers are forced to wait in Mexico,

The Trump Administration Wants To Start DNA Testing Undocumented Immigrants In Government Custody

A draft rule, seen by BuzzFeed News, said hundreds of thousands of people could have their DNA collected each year if it is fully implemented.

The move will likely inspire the anger of civil liberties and immigrant advocates, who argue that

the government should not draw sensitive personal information from people without being tied to a specific crime.

Administration officials estimate that CBP officials would spend more than 20,000 additional work hours on such a policy in its first year of implementation.

Hundreds of thousands of individuals could have their DNA collected each year if the draft regulation, proposed by the Department of Justice, is fully implemented.

Administration officials cite a statute — the DNA Fingerprint Act of 2005 — that allows federal agencies to collect DNA from individuals in their custody, including those who are not American.

But previous DOJ regulations exempted agencies under the Department of Homeland Security — including CBP and ICE — from conducting such collection in certain circumstances.

In 2010, then–DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano narrowed the exemption, saying people who were not detained on criminal charges and those who were awaiting deportation proceedings would not have their DNA collected.

The current draft proposal would cut the exception all together — opening it up to include people who are awaiting deportation and those who are not charged with a crime, such as undocumented immigrants, to the collection.

Former senior DHS officials said an expansion of DNA collection would likely achieve little, drain resources, and force agents to do work they’d rather not be doing.

“In many ways, it’s unnecessary from a law enforcement perspective,” said John Sandweg, a former senior immigration official in the Obama administration. “I don’t understand what you’re going to get out of it. The idea that some guy crossing the border committed a crime, returned, and came back all undetected is very remote.”

Trump Administration Wants to Deport Gravely Ill Migrant Kids

quietly and unexpectedly informed families of

kids with cancer and other grave conditions that they face deportation

because it is ending the federal “medical deferred action” program.

The program has allowed undocumented immigrants to stay in the U.S. without threat of deportation for needed medical treatment that might not be offered in their home country.

“Can the Trump administration sink any lower than threatening to deport sick kids?”

It continued:

Step by malicious step, the Trump administration is

turning the immigration system into an apparatus of appalling intentional cruelty.

The latest case in point is a relatively small program known as “medical deferred action” in which immigrants without legal status who are suffering from serious medical conditions are granted a reprieve from deportation so they can have access to much needed medical treatment in the United States.

Trump halted the program this month, threatening to deport these patients, including children with leukemia, children with muscular dystrophy, children with cystic fibrosis.

The program`s termination means suspending or interrupting the children`s medical care, which

in some cases is virtually a death sentence.

Federal Court Reinstates Full Block on Trump Asylum Ban

A federal court has reinstated a nationwide injunction blocking a Trump administration asylum ban

that denied asylum to anyone at the southern border who had transited through a third country en route to the United States.

It follows a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling last month that narrowed the scope of the injunction to that circuit.

The American Civil Liberties Union, Center for Constitutional Rights, and Southern Poverty Law Center, were in court on September 5 seeking reinstatement of the nationwide injunction. U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar issued the ruling today.

The following reaction is from:

ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt:

“The court recognized there is grave danger facing asylum-seekers along the entire stretch of the southern border.”

Trump says US must be 'careful' about admitting people from Bahamas

“We have to be very careful. Everybody needs totally proper documentation.

Because look, the Bahamas has some tremendous problems with people going to the Bahamas who weren’t supposed to be there,”

“I don’t want to allow people that weren’t supposed to be in the Bahamas to come into the United States, including some very bad people and some very bad gang members, and some very, very bad drug dealers,” :lol Baby words from the infantile, regressed Trash :lol

Trump’s remarks came after dozens of people evacuating the Bahamas were kicked off of a ferry (https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/460468-hundreds-of-bahamians-told-to-leave-evacuation-ship-report) headed for Florida over confusion regarding their visas.

The individuals were told to disembark the boat because they weren’t traveling with U.S. visas,

Morgan told reporters Monday that the developments were the result of “confusion,” and said the Trump administration would look to process anyone seeking entry into the U.S. from the Bahamas for humanitarian reasons on an expedited basis.

“You can imagine any type of natural disaster like this where you have this huge disaster, a lot of resources going on and responding, there’s going to be some confusion,”

“We are not working and telling a cruise line that you cannot allow anyone without documents.

That’s just not being done.” :lol

Trump is trying to drastically raise appeal fees in immigration courts to deter asylum seekers

Trump administration is now trying to claw back funds to the Treasury, attempting to profit off the backs of asylum seekers and immigrants.

As reported by BuzzFeed News, the administration is proposing to dramatically increase the cost for filing appeals in deportation cases in a new draft regulation that the publication obtained.

The new proposal would raise the current fee of $110 to $975 for any request for an appeal of an immigration judge’s ruling and to $895 for the reopening or reconsideration of a case in front of the Board of Immigration Appeals.

U.S. immigration officials are manipulating illiterate migrants.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection often conveniently exploits asylum seekers who cannot read.

Along with an unfamiliarity with our deliberately complex immigration system,

the illiteracy of Central American migrants, especially women,

facilitates the deportation of parents and separation of families.

By manipulating illiterate refugees who often unwittingly sign away their rights,

the U.S. government is violating the basic tenets of the internationally recognized and protected right (https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/asylum-united-states) to seek asylum.

Trump admin ignored its own evidence of climate change's impact on migration from Central America

EXCLUSIVE: An internal report obtained by NBC News showed migration surged from those areas where climate change is hurting crops and farmers.

Research compiled one year ago by Customs and Border Protection pointed to an overwhelming factor driving record-setting migration to the U.S. from Guatemala:

Crop shortages were leaving rural Guatemalans, especially in the country's western highlands, in extreme poverty and starving.

migration surged from those areas of Guatemala without reliable subsistence farming or wages from commercial farming jobs.

Shoot Them in the Legs, Trump Suggested: Inside His Border War

As White House advisers listened astonished,

he ordered them to shut down the entire 2,000-mile border with Mexico — by noon the next day.

Privately, the president had often talked about fortifying a border wall with

a water-filled trench,

stocked with snakes or alligators,

prompting aides to seek a cost estimate.

He wanted the wall electrified,

with spikes on top that could pierce human flesh.

After publicly suggesting that soldiers shoot migrants if they threw rocks, the president backed off when his staff told him that was illegal.

But later in a meeting, aides recalled,

he suggested that they shoot migrants in the legs to slow them down.

That’s not allowed either, they told him.

“You are making me look like an idiot!”

Mr. Trump shouted, adding in a profanity, as multiple officials in the room described it. “I ran on this. It’s my issue.”

Mr. Trump had routinely berated Ms.

Nielsen as ineffective and, worse — at least in his mind — not tough-looking enough.

“Lou Dobbs hates you, Ann Coulter hates you, you’re making me look bad,”

“All you care about is your friends in Mexico,” the president snapped, according to people in the room. “I’ve had it. I want it done at noon tomorrow.”

The president’s advisers left the meeting in a near panic.

Every year more than $200 billion worth of American exports flow across the Mexican border.

Closing it would wreck havoc on American farmers and automakers, among many others.

Courts Are Fighting Back Against Trump’s Brutal Immigration Policies

Federal judges just issued rulings protecting immigrant children, slowing fast-track deportations, and restricting ICE detention orders.

lost amid the other headlines this week were three extraordinarily positive judicial rulings.

First, in California, Federal Judge Dolly Gee (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/27/us/migrant-children-flores-court.html) ruled that the terms ofthe Flores agreement (https://www.thenation.com/article/immigration-kids-trump-flores-concentration-camps/), which have the effect of limiting how long immigrant children can be kept in detention, could not be superseded by new Trump administration regulations allowing for indefinite detention.

Then, in quick succession, a Washington, DC, court declared illegal the administration’s plans for fast-track deportation (https://www.npr.org/2019/09/28/765357363/federal-judge-blocks-trump-move-to-fast-track-deportations) of undocumented immigrants arrested anywhere in the United States who can’t prove they have been here continuously for two years.

Finally, in Gonzalez v. ICE (https://www.aclusocal.org/en/press-releases/federal-court-rules-ices-primary-deportation-program-unconstitutional), a federal district court restricted when and how ICE could request that local police detain immigrants;

the judge ruled that ICE was violating the Fourth Amendment in its catch-all missions against immigrants by mining federal databases that contain inaccurate or incomplete information.

The U.S. government wants to start collecting DNA from detained immigrants to include in a national criminal database,

The database is maintained by the FBI, and used by law enforcement authorities as they attempt to identify suspects.

DNA is collected from people who have been arrested, charged, or convicted of major crimes.

The Department of Justice is working on a federal regulation that gives immigration officers authorization to collect DNA from migrants at detention facilities containing more than 40,000 people

the government would also be able to collect DNA from kids and asylum seekers who enter at legal ports of entry.

"That kind of mass collection alters the purpose of DNA collection from one of criminal investigation

basically to population surveillance,

which is basically contrary to our basic notions of a free, trusting, autonomous society,"

Law enforcement / incarceration BLATANTLY are profit-seeking businesses, and govt functions secondarily

A Small County Bets Big on Locking Up Undocumented Immigrants

Jones County has an empty prison and a load of debt. Their solution? Dust off the old prison and fill it with undocumented migrants.

https://www.texasobserver.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/willacy-web-oct19-ap.jpg

Jones County, a swath of Texas plains home to some 20,000 souls, should have new neighbors:

about 1,000 undocumented immigrant men held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (https://www.texasobserver.org/tag/immigration-and-customs-enforcement/) (ICE) custody.

Local politicians are excited about the project, which should bring more than 200 decent-paying jobs to the cash-strapped county.
Plus, it’ll let them finally pay off their debts from the last time they bet on prisons—and got burned.

A decade ago, Jones County thought it had a sweet deal with the state to start locking up drug offenders.

The county issued about $35 million in bonds through a public facility corporation, then built a new low-security, 1,100-bed lockup.

The problem? Texas’ 20-year-long incarceration boom was cresting:

The prison system had grown bloated and expensive, and with a recession on, states across the country were under pressure to cut budgets.

The state bailed, never sending any prisoners, leaving poor Jones County with an empty prison and a load of debt.

“When we monetize and gain profit from incarcerating the most vulnerable and needy individuals … that’s kind of a classic definition of sin.”

Trash/Miller wants to let local officials veto federal decisions

he has issued

an executive order that requires state and local governments consent—in writing—before refugees can arrive.

So a state could ban refugees even when a city is prepared to welcome them.

A locality can essentially veto a decision by the federal government to admit a fleeing family.

A state could ban refugees even when a city is prepared to welcome them, a locality can essentially veto a decision by the federal government.

That veto power is unprecedented for U.S. refugee resettlement.

Donald Trump used a campaign rally in Minnesota to flaunt the new order,

telling thousands of yelling adherents that they should reject certain individuals—including Somali refugees who have settled in the area.

The jeering crowd was quick to respond to the idea of blocking a non-white population.

After child deaths, doctors pressure Border Patrol to let them administer flu vaccines

The agency has yet to respond to an offer this week to vaccinate 100 migrant parents and children in Border Patrol detention in San Ysidro.

the flu mortality rate among migrant children in Border Patrol custody was nine times that of the general population

last year and giving them until Tuesday to respond to their offer.

By late Tuesday, there was no indication Border Patrol would accept. “this alarming mortality rate constitutes an emergency which threatens the safety of human lives, particularly of children.”

Three youths — ages 2, 6 and 16 — died in Border Patrol custody of the flu during the federal fiscal year that ended in September.

The deaths came as the number of migrant children and families in federal custody reached a record high.

Border Patrol officials say they do not vaccinate migrant families and children

U.S. Has World’s Highest Rate Of Children In Detention: U.N. Study

There are more than 100,000 children in immigration-related custody, violating international law,

Children should only be detained as a measure of last resort and for the shortest time possible, according to the United Nations Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty.

“Of course separating children,

as was done by the Trump administration, from their parents and even small children at the Mexican-U.S. border

is absolutely prohibited by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. (https://www.ohchr.org/en/professionalinterest/pages/crc.aspx)

I would call it inhuman treatment for both the parents and the children.” :lol psychological injury is torture, but USA don't torture.

Report confirms officials failed to track separated families,

planned to steal up to 26,000 kids

border officials failed to implement needed technology to track families being ripped apart. In some cases, investigators said,

officials became aware of a separation only because a different agency tasked with overseeing separated kids notified them about it.

Customs and Border Protection officials apparently devised their own ways to try to track these separations, “but these techniques introduced data errors that further hindered ICE [Enforcement and Removal Operations] officers’ ability to track migrant parents separated from their children.”

“Data errors were so extensive that a Border Patrol Chief expressed embarrassment at the number of inaccuracies documented by field personnel,”

The cruelty has always been intentional:

The report says that officials proceeded with state-sanctioned kidnapping in 2018

even though they were very much aware after “piloting” family separation in 2017 that

they lacked adequate tracking technology.

They knew there was no system in place,

yet they were prepared to go far beyond this catastrophe:

The report reveals that officials had planned to kidnap upwards of 26,000 children

before a federal judge’s June 2018 order blocked the policy.

The group of about 60 doctors and advocates told Customs and Border Protection they could set up a free flu shot clinic for migrants, with 120 doses of the vaccine at the ready.

At least three children in immigration custody have died from the flu this year,

including a 16-year-old from Guatemala, (https://www.propublica.org/article/inside-the-cell-where-a-sick-16-year-old-boy-died-in-border-patrol-care) and the physicians first offered to set up the clinic last month.

The Trash administration knew migrant children would suffer from family separations.

The government ramped up the practice anyway.

Internal emails and reports illustrate a chaotic attempt to track traumatized migrant children seized from parents.

an employee working for the U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement described a 5-year-old’s despair at a shelter.

“Minor was separated at the border from his biological mother.

Minor was tearful when he arrived and would not speak or engage in conversation with anyone,” the caregiver wrote in a report. This document and others shed light on

a social experiment that was both cruel and chaotic.

Reports of traumatized children were forwarded to the Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties,

which is charged with ensuring that national security policies respect constitutional rights.

the office failed to assist children whose suffering was documented in hundreds of similar complaints the office received last year.

Remain in Mexico has a 0.1% asylum grant rate

Data show that, as of September, of the more than 47,000 people in the program, fewer than 10,000 had completed their cases.

Of that group, 5,085 cases were denied while 4,471 cases were dismissed without a decision being made — mostly on procedural grounds.

Only 11 cases — or 0.1% of all completed cases — resulted in asylum being granted, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.

That 0.1% grant rate is significantly lower than the 20% who were granted asylum outside of the Remain in Mexico process

“The situation has had severe impacts on U.S. border security and immigration operations,” the announcement read.

“The dramatic increase in illegal migration, including unprecedented number of families and fraudulent asylum claims is making it harder for the U.S. to devote appropriate resources to individuals who are legitimately fleeing persecution.”

each one documenting an increasing number of migrants being robbed, beaten, kidnapped and raped south of the border.

The latest report, published Thursday, identified 636 reported cases of kidnapping, torture and other violent attacks on asylum seekers who were part of the Remain in Mexico program. That figure includes 138 cases of kidnapping or attempted kidnapping of children.

“There are people who just cannot take it anymore,” he said. “They would rather die at home than die in a foreign country where their families won’t be able to come for their remains and give them a proper burial.”

According to Donald Trump, the poor conditions and the family separations serve as a “deterrent” for others seeking asylum here. Child torture is a feature of his plan, not a bug (https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/immigration-border-children-separation/h_5652f6b137eaba6711e304f376476c94):

When you prosecute the parents for coming in illegally, which should happen, you have to take the children away.
-Donald Trump, June 19, 2018

Under Trump, Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller were allowed to completely rewrite our immigration policy. Now,

anyone who seeks asylum is immediately regarded as a criminal and

treated as such before the asylum claim can be evaluated.

No exceptions are allowed,

Children and even babies were ripped from their parents and crammed in caged holding cells.

Right now, there are thousands of families behind bars, and hundreds of children are still languishing in for-profit concentration camps.

House Democrats now probing whistleblower's allegations of horrific medical care at ICE facilities

House Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties is now investigating

allegations made by a whistleblower in a Department of Homeland Security memo

detailing medical care at Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities that was

so substandard that it contributed to numerous deaths in custody and other horrors.

“According to the report, most, if not all, of these incidents were the result of

gross negligence on behalf the ICE personnel and medical professionals tasked with caring for detainees,”

“at least 17 complaints of inadequate medical treatment or oversight at nine different ICE facilities,

resulting in two preventable surgeries and contributing to four deaths. …

Specific examples of inadequate care include:

An eight-year-old boy who had part of his forehead removed due to a delayed diagnosis.”

his condition gravely worsened, and he was hospitalized, ultimately requiring surgery to

remove part of his forehead after an infection led to abscesses forming under his skull.

the ICE Medical Quality Management Unit found that the “inadequate medical care provided by [the detention center] was a contributory factor resulting in harm,”

“a man who was improperly prescribed aspirin—

for six days, resulting in the detainee coughing up blood and being hospitalized.”

the child, an indigenous boy from Guatemala, “exhibited increasingly alarming symptoms, including writhing in distress, collapsing, vomiting blood, and finally laying motionless on the floor for hours.

“The Department’s failure to care for this sick child appears to be part of a troubling

pattern of abuse and poor treatment of immigrants in the Department’s detention centers,”

Maloney continued. (https://oversight.house.gov/news/press-releases/committee-investigates-deaths-of-immigrant-children-and-adults)

Trash/Miller still neglecting, abusing migrants

Experts slam CBP's new migrant health screening plan as 'bare bones,' 'beyond disappointing'

On New Year’s Eve, border officials released a medical screening “plan” that’s being criticized by leading medical professionals as “incredibly frustrating,” “bare bones,” and “beyond disappointing,”

The plan “is lacking in many details and provides health screenings only for children, not adults,”

will roll the plan out in phases, having agents "observe and identify potential medical issues” when they first detain someone, then conducting “health interviews” of people under 18.

"This agency is responsible for people's lives and should act like it is.”

“It’s going to ... take another 90 days to figuring out a plan for delivering increased medical screenings of kids,” he wrote.

“You can tell this is a real priority for them.”

The plan comes more than a year after 7-year-old Jakelin Ameí Rosmery Caal Maquin (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/12/9/1904462/-Advocates-remember-seven-year-old-Jakelin-Maquin-on-one-year-anniversary-of-death-in-U-S-custody) and 8-year-old Felipe Gómez Alonzo (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/4/4/1847792/-8-year-old-migrant-boy-died-of-flu-and-infection-while-in-federal-immigration-custody-autopsy-finds) became

ICE reopening long-closed deportation cases against Dreamers

Now, in an escalation of its pursuit of undocumented immigrants, the

Trump administration is moving to deport members of the very group that seemed until a few years ago the most protected: DACA recipients.

ICE has begun asking immigration courts to reopen administratively closed deportation cases against DACA recipients who continue to have no criminal record, or only a minor record.

Immigration attorneys in Arizona confirmed at least 14 such cases being reopened since October, and CNN also found DACA recipients whose cases recently were reopened in Nevada and Missouri.

And that is just the beginning.

ICE confirmed to CNN that all DACA recipients whose deportation cases have been administratively closed can expect to see them reopened.

In an email, the agency stated that "re-calendaring of administratively closed cases is occurring nationwide and not isolated to a particular state or region."

The move to reopen deportation cases against Dreamers comes as

the US Supreme Court consider (https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/12/politics/daca-supreme-court-arguments/index.html)s whether to let the Trump administration end the program — and during oral arguments in November, at least

some justices made it clear that they were accepting the president's assurances that ending DACA would not mean deporting Dreamers.

Chief Justice John Roberts said that the dispute over DACA is really "about work authorization and these other benefits." Referring to the Dreamers,

Roberts said that the Trump administration, like the Obama administration before it, "said they're not going to deport people."
But immigration attorneys say the cases they are now seeing reopened show how

ICE is preparing to deport DACA recipients if the Supreme Court ruling terminates the program.

Trump's budget proposal requests "wildly large" ICE funding

The White House is asking for a boost (https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/budget_fy21.pdf) to this year's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) budget,

a proposal that includes 60,000 detention beds —

6,000 more than last year's budget proposal and

around 15,000 more than ICE actually received.

By the numbers: The administration's

immigration focus seems to have shifted from the border wall to detention.

The White House has proposed funds to hold an average of 55,000 adults and 5,000 family members each day in ICE detention centers. In the past two fiscal years, ICE has only been granted enough funding to fill an average of 45,000 beds each day.
Meanwhile, the administration is asking for just $2 billion for the border wall, significantly less than the $5 billion for the wall it requested last year, the Wall Street Journal reported (https://www.wsj.com/articles/white-house-to-reduce-budget-request-for-border-wall-11581257308).
The proposal also includes funds for 4,600 new ICE personnel.
At $9.8 billion, the administration wants nearly $2 billion more in ICE's total "operations and support" budget than they received for this fiscal year, as Politico reported. (https://www.politico.com/news/2020/02/09/trump-border-wall-cash-billions-112860)

Between the lines: ICE held record numbers (https://www.axios.com/ice-immigration-detention-numbers-17d41cce-7d7a-48ff-b1df-9404837f110a.html) of migrants in detention during and shortly after the border crisis last summer — reaching an average of 55,000 detained migrants per day (https://apnews.com/85e0297896ce4d12a0be7e3ebd0920fa).

The FBI Is Investigating Massive Embezzlement of Border Patrol Union Funds

The head of the powerful union representing border patrol agents nationwide said

the FBI is working to identify who stole some $500,000 out of the coffers of the El Paso local.

The theft raises more questions about lawlessness in the union’s ranks.

This is why Moscow Mitch / Leonard Leo have been polluting the Federal judiciary to block these kinds of humane rulings

Federal appeals court blocks inhumane and illegal Trump policy forcing asylum-seekers to Mexico (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2020/2/28/1922791/-Federal-appeals-court-blocks-inhumane-and-illegal-Trump-policy-forcing-asylum-seekers-to-Mexico)

the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday issued two rulings hitting the Trump administration’s attempts to obliterate the U.S. asylum system, including

a decision blocking the inhumane and illegal Remain in Mexico policy,

finding it “likely violated federal immigration law by ousting undocumented asylum seekers who are supposed to be allowed to apply for protection inside the United States,”

The court further said that

Remain in Mexico—officially called Migrant Protection Protocols, even though it’s provided no protections (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2020/1/23/1913541/--A-year-of-horrors-Human-costs-of-Trump-admin-s-Remain-in-Mexico-policy-continue-to-climb) to the 60,000 people who’ve been shut out of the U.S.—

“likely violated the United States’ ‘non-refoulement’ obligations under international and domestic law, which prohibit the U.S. government from sending people to a country where they could face persecution,”

“The 57-page ruling cited multiple examples of Central American asylum seekers who feared kidnapping, threats and violence in Mexico.”

The 5th Circuit would very probably given Trash/McConnell a victory.

I expect the govt to appeal

In ICE Detention, Forced to Pay for Soap

The for-profit model of private prison contractors has created artificial scarcity—and serious danger during the pandemic.

ICE requires the privately run jail to serve detained immigrants three meals per day, but, in a clear effort to keep attendance low and costs down, breakfast is served at 3:30 am.

the meals are sparse, and often days old.

“Soap we have to buy from the commissary,” Escobedo says. “They give us a tiny soap that is only good for one use.” He says that once a week, on Tuesday, the jail gives each person a ration of soap, but it lasts about a day. If people want more, they have to pay.

The coronavirus crisis has thrown the archipelago of ICE detention centers run by private prison companies into chaos.

“We basically have to hunger strike to get what we need,”

soap and cleaning products are rationed out in such meager amounts that he and other detainees have periodically stopped eating to pressure the detention center staff to provide enough supplies.

multiple reports from detained immigrants who say they’ve engaged in mass protests in recent weeks demanding soap, cleaning products, and toilet paper.

In 2019, a bar of Dove soap cost $2.44 in CoreCivic’s Stewart Detention Center in Georgia, according to a Reuter’s investigation (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-immigration-detention/11-toothpaste-immigrants-pay-big-for-basics-at-private-ice-lock-ups-idUSKCN1PC0DJ); the same bar costs about a dollar at a drugstore.

to “motivate” immigrants into working in-detention jobs, which can pay as little as $1 per day.

detention facilities create “artificial scarcity” in order to coerce the people locked inside into working in-detention jobs.

Geo purposely skimps on basic necessities—like food soap, clean water, medicine—in order to make it so that they have a readily available workforce.”

Lawsuit alleges three women were raped in ICE custody before being deported

three men in plainclothes appeared around midnight with their faces covered.

Jane Doe says she was beaten and raped by one of the men, and that the other women in the cell were also assaulted.

After the three women were assaulted, Jane Doe alleges that they were left in the cell until around 5 AM on June 2, 2018,

when men arrived and told the women to change their underwear and clothing.

Jane Doe says they were then loaded onto a bus with male detainees and detention center guards, transferred to Laredo, Texas, and then deported to Mexico.

ICE purports to have a “zero tolerance policy (https://www.ice.gov/prea)” for all forms of sexual abuse, :lol

but abuse is rampant in the agency’s detention centers nationwide.

An analysis (https://www.freedomforimmigrants.org/sexual-assault) of 33,000 complaints of sexual assault and physical abuse filed with the DHS Office of Inspector General between January 2010 and July 2016 found that more abuse complaints were filed against ICE than any other agency within DHS.

Even more recently, an April 2018 investigation (https://theintercept.com/2018/04/11/immigration-detention-sexual-abuse-ice-dhs/) by The Intercept reviewed

1,224 complaints of sexual and physical abuse filed by detained people between 2010 and 2017.

More than half of those accused of abuse worked for ICE.
CoreCivic, the nation’s oldest and largest for-profit private prison corporation, operates more than 70 facilities across the country and is one of ICE’s largest contractors despite

decades of documented cases of sexual violence, abuse, medical neglect, and

in-custody deaths spanning both the company’s immigrant detention centers (https://grassrootsleadership.org/cca-dirty-30) and prisons (https://www.newschannel5.com/news/scathing-state-audit-slams-tennessee-prisons-corecivic-for-staffing-sexual-assaults-and-deaths-in-jails).
