I might break my 'no more than $20 for backlog' rule for TLOU Part II. Don't figure I'll finish RDR2 before the new year, but TLOU, Part II would go next in my backlog. Nioh 2 for $10 looks great but might wait for that one on PoorC so I can play at 60 fps. Disappointed no Walmart BF deals on games this year. I think Target has already started their BF deals with Buy 2, Get 1 but paying $120 for 3 games isn't really much of a deal IMO.

I was reading an article about why Microsoft made the Series S console and it suggests we might not end up getting cheaper consoles since 5nm and 3nm nodes don't seem like they'll offer savings in cost per transistor. If that's true than the only reason not to get the consoles early is to wait for defects to get ironed out. Thoughts, ElNono?

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2020-xbox-series-s-big-interview

"Moore's Law is certainly not dead! Moore's Law is continuing and we have a good path to 5nm and 3nm, and those are going to bring improved performance and good power," enthuses Goossen. "What they're not bringing any more is a good cost reduction cost per transistor - and so this has foundational impacts to console development, because now we'll get cost reductions, but they're slowing down and it won't be nearly the magnitudes that we've seen before."

The fact is that future nodes like 5nm and 3nm do deliver advantages then - and PC processors and GPUs along with smartphones can still benefit from those. But typically, consoles stick to the same performance profile across the generation. Goossen is essentially suggesting that leveraging these nodes for cheaper consoles may not be an option, which poses a difficult problem for the Xbox team going into the future with the intention of delivering even more powerful hardware. Processor performance is tied closely to transistor count - but if the cost per transistor is not reducing, a new chip with more logic will cost a lot more to make, even if it's actually smaller than today's processors. For the new consoles, a smaller, slimmer machine is a possibility - but the actual cost of making it won't change that much.

"And so that was another one of the reasons why we felt that we really had to do Series S at the beginning because we had to design for the future. For the first time, we had to have the entry-level console at the beginning. Previous generations were kind of easy because at the beginning of the generation, you make something really expensive - put as much silicon and as much performance as you could into it - then you would just ride the cost reduction curves down to mass market prices. That's not there anymore," Goossen explains.

In Microsoft's recent HotChips presentation on the Xbox Series X, Microsoft's engineers also outlined how challenging it is to deliver a generational leap is in a world where silicon costs are problematic and where year-on-year drops in memory cost are tailing off. The presentation suggested that the 7nm process was not as cost-effective as the 16nm used for Xbox One X and S, but Andrew Goossen puts this into perspective:

"Well, it's still declined to 7nm - but you're right that the wins had been less and so it's definitely an ongoing industry trend with the cost per transistor relative to previous processes. The wins haven't been as big... going up to 7nm, but there have still been wins, 7nm is still cheaper per transistor than the previous ones. It's just after 7nm is where it potentially starts going up... you get those other benefits like the increased clock rates and you get the benefits of better power, but those aren't things that we can directly apply to cost reductions."

There's still corners that can be cut though. Might not come from the CPU/GPU pair itself, but there are cost cuttings on improved cooling designs (which lower the board size, and cost), new multi-layered flash tech to cut down costs and increase capacity on SSD, eventually losing the BD-ROM drive, RAM price/capacity...

Also, I don't know if 5nm or 3nm are even in production yet, tbh... you might not win in price, but you'll win in performance, so it's easier to justify a higher price tag.

You can also see what Apple did moving to simpler chips designs that give them a higher margin. Although I don't suspect that will pan out this generation, but wouldn't be surprised on the next one.

But it's probably unlikely we'll see $300 PS5 any time in the generation, and especially not $200 PS5 like we got with the PS4 Slim after the node shrink to 16nm from 28nm (I think I paid $220 new for my Slim like two months after they came out). So waiting will only likely get you a smaller PS5 with lower power consumption and a larger SSD for around the same price it sounds like.

Damn I wonder if XBox will win this gen with a $300 system then. PS4 really didn't start blowing up until the cheap Slims were available and $500 or even $400 throughout the gen is going to make it impossible for them to have the level of sales they got with PS4.

Well, people forget there's inflation too, and adjusted dollar prices are a thing. I don't think we'll ever see a PS5 at $200, but a digital edition at $300 at some point? Maybe.

I also think we'll see more of the 2 year financing model like MS is trying if it works out (free/cheap PSN for 2 years + monthly payments for the console, sort of like 2 year cellphone plan).

Obviously, all speculation is mine, I don't know anything about future console plans.

Meh digital edition, wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole since it ensures you'd be paying full price for any game that's relatively new, as you'd be stuck buying from PSN instead of buying when one of Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart, Gamestop, Target, Newegg, etc run a deal on a game. I'd probably still buy a $500 disc version PS5 over a $300 digital edition, as I'd probably at least break even on PS5 game cost and could play all my PS4 games without having to rebuy them.

Digital is great for older games, but is almost always more expensive if you want to buy a game in its first year. Only time I have bought a new game digital in the last couple of years was Persona 5 Royal, and that was only because I expected most retail stores to be shut down by March 31st (the release date) from the pandemic so traded in my physical pre-order for PSN cards in early March to buy it digitally.

EDIT: Take it back, also bought the Yakuza Remastered Collection digital pretty soon after it came out since the physical disc wasn't releasing for like 4 months after the digital version of Yakuza 3 dropped as part of the collection.

Bots are flooding their servers so the buyers can dump them on ebay for $1200+. If you want to guarantee a PS5 you better go wait in line at Gamestop on Thanksgiving and be first or second, since each store is supposed to get at least 2 PS5 and 2 Series X for Black Friday. Or pay scalper prices.

After hearing Microsoft talk about how they aren't expecting any cost per transistor savings in 5nm and 3nm lithography it sounds like there will not be any big price cuts this gen. At least on the disc version of the console. I can only see Sony dropping price on the digital-only PS5 to gain monopoly power for PSN on your PS5 and PS4 game purchases. Probably just best to buy when the games you want to play are already out and have dropped in price.

I could see it happening, but only with the digital version of the console. As much as I'd rather have the full PS5, if I get the new God of War and a PS5 digital for $400 I think I might jump on it, as the new God of War is one of the few games I'd pay full price for to buy at launch I'd value it as a $70 addon to the system. Flamelurker and False King Allant are the only ones who look engaging. Watching people play the remake made me remember how much FromSoft repeats themselves. Many of these bosses were repackaged for Dark Souls and/or Bloodborne, and the fights weren't that good to begin with.

Add a sixth area, change the final boss, tweak the rest of the bosses, remake the World Tendency system, and add covenants. I don't think I would spend more than 15 hours on this game in its current state.

Going to be fucking impossible to get one before Christmas since scalpers know people will pay premiums for the systems for Christmas gifts. Especially in as hard of a fucking year as this. Once Christmas is over I doubt the demand will be there for scalping to be nearly as profitable.

it's crazy seeing people list these things on ebay for $1200-1500, i can't believe someone would pay that much for a console. especially since you could put together a damn good PC with that much money

And for a launch console that at best is 50/50 to break. No thanks.

Besides that, there are no games for it anyways. If you do get one you're going to be playing PS4 games on it for a while. lol

This is actually a pretty solid launch lineup for a Playstation console honestly, at least for exclusives. Miles Morales plus Demons Souls beats the shit out of Killzone Shadow Fall and Knack on PS4 or Resistance Fall of Man and Ridge Racer 7 on PS3. Only Nintendo consoles really are worth it at launch though.

Yeah the RT Performance mode seems like the way to go. There was a real question which was the better way to play before when there was only a 30 fps RT mode vs a 60 fps non RT mode but now I'll take the 60 fps RT performance mode over the 30 fps RT quality mode any day at the expense of lower resolution reflections. Gotta say the game looks really impressive on PS5 in that performance mode even watching compressed youtube video at 1080p. Probably way more impressive on an actual PS5, though only ElNono could confirm AFAIK. :lol

More like I know there are eventually going to be a lot of games I want for the system. Combine that with the expectation that 5nm and 3nm processes aren't going to offer any cost per transistor savings and there is no real reason to be patient. If there is no cost per transistor savings from process shrinks there will be no PS5 Slim for deeply discounted price and no PS5 Pro period. If cost per transistor really is going to be flat going from 7nm to 5nm and 3nm the only room for savings will be on power supply, heatsink, case, and ssd. Not enough there to really lower PS5 price much over the generation so might as well buy early unless you're dead set on having a smaller console when the Slim comes.

Also these are going to be a bitch to find until at least the summer according to AMD.

So might as well buy now and enjoy Ghost of Tsushima at 60 fps, Judgement and Yakuza 6 without frame drops, another playthrough of God of War at 60 fps, etc. And maybe pick up Spiderman to play at 60 fps with RT.

Just no reason to be a patient gamer on the hardware side when the one thing that has made hardware cheap in the past, node shrinks, looks unlikely to make this generation's consoles significantly cheaper over the gen.

For me it’s not about the money. 500 is dirt cheap considering these things used to run you nearly a thousand when you include taxes, games and accessories etc.

I personally don’t do waiting for price drops. I’m one of those fools who pay full price for games and stuff. But...

you have to make it worth it and back the system up with grade A games. Which is never the case hence why I don’t mind waiting.

Best Buy has supposedly built up stock for a release this week too. Here is a tracker you can set alarms with:

https://www.nowinstock.net/videogaming/consoles/sonyps5/

Best Buy you might have a reasonable shot with since their add to cart button makes everyone wait some random time (everyone the same though) and then you click the button to place the order. So it can't be spammed as easily by bots as Target and Walmart are. Much better chance you're at least competing with other humans when trying to order off Best Buy.

Also here is one more tracker. Sometimes a drop will show up on the first tracker I link, sometimes only on this one, but most of the time on both trackers.

Ideally I would have liked the Digital, it's way better looking IMO. God the disc version is ugly as hell. But I'm cheap when buying games and know the disc version will be cheaper for me in the long run since there is lots of competition for physical disc sales.

Wii was was like this for at least the first year and a half. Actually, Switch was like this too for maybe 4 months or so, although opening weekend they weren't hard to find back when everyone thought it would be another Wii U like flop. For the converse, PS3 was a bitch to get the first week and the 60GB model was selling for $1200+ but then two weeks later once everyone realized PS3 sucked you could get it easy.

I'm the same way. I dont mind waiting until the mad rush ends and get it at my own pace.

But this time the more I think about it the more I'm inclined to go get one. I'm at the point where most of my friends already have one so I'm the only one left holding the bag this time so that's pissing me off a little. :lol

Amazon you'll never get one without renting a bot, supposedly they don't GAF whether bots buy or not. Walmart use the direct add to cart links I posted and be fast in checkout. Best Buy as soon as they become available everyone who clicks gets put on a timer and when that timer is up you gotta immediately click the add to cart and then blast through the checkout or someone else will get the one or two they released for pickup at your store. Target felt same as Amazon to me. Easiest way to get one without paying scalper prices is to buy a bundle from Gamestop. Last time they had bundles up they lasted 10 maybe even 15 minutes. Though that's obviously only the disc console. They had one bundle that was PS5 + Miles Morales + Demon's Souls + 1 Year PS Plus + $50 Gamestop gift card for $730 and another for $720 that was the same bundle except Demon's Souls replaced by Sackboy. Obviously make sure you have an account setup with a credit card setup and be logged in too, email address verified, etc for every place you try if you're going to attempt to get one.

I think I posted a couple of trackers above you can use to tell you when a store gets them in stock.

AMD says to expect shortages until 2H 2021 on all their hardware, including PS5 and XBox Series S/X.

I lost two in checkout at Walmart and one in checkout at Best Buy before I finally got that one to go through at Walmart. Never did make it to checkout at Target or Amazon and never tried Gamestop since I didn't want the bundles.

Walmart seems to restock every two weeks or so, so you probably won't get an opportunity until then. They also announce their drops beforehand. I didn't know about the first drop at 3:00PM EST yesterday but one of the trackers I set an alarm for alterted me it was in stock at 3PM EST yesterday. By the time I got there it was too late for the 3:00 drop but they do more drops every ten minutes. Eg they did a 3:10 drop, a 3:20 drop, a 3:30 drop, and a 3:40 drop.

If you went to the product page before 3:00PM EST it would have a message saying will be available at 3:00PM EST. So at 2:59PM EST start loading and reloading that direct add to cart link until you get it in your cart or say it reaches 3:02PM and you haven't gotten one in cart. If you get it in cart complete the transaction ASAP. Usually you'll be too slow and will have been sold (happened when I got it in the cart at 3:10, 3:20, and 3:30). But maybe you get lucky.

If you miss the 3:00EST drop the product page then says it'll be available again at 3:10EST, so you do the same shit again. Eg start refreshing the direct add to cart page I linked at 3:09 until you get it in cart and then try to get checked out ASAP. And just keep doing this until you either get one or the product page says out of stock and there are no more times it'll be available again.

Here is the product page for PS5 disc version if I haven't linked it before:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/PlayStation-5-Console/363472942

Good luck if you try, it's a real bitch trying to land one of these. If you want Miles Morales and Demon's Souls though I'd jump on that Gamestop bundle, those will be way easier to get when they become available since all the extras they add in will eat up most of any PS5 scalper's profit (these systems don't sell for $1000+ anymore like they did before Christmas). Even if you don't normally buy PS Plus (I'm pretty sure it's part of the Gamestop bundle) it's a pretty badass deal right now with all the included PS4 games plus Control PS5 edition.

I'm fine with just the base system. I am not looking to buy any PS5 games until God of War 5. I'll hapily play my backlog of PS4 games on the PS5 in the meantime.

There have been a lot of leaks from Best Buy employees about them building up stock for another drop soon. I would have figured there would have been one today from the rumors, maybe there was, I haven't been following any more after getting an order confirmed. If you want to try you should keep those two trackers open that I posted above and make sure the alarms are turned on. You have probably a minute or two from when the Best Buy alarms go off until you can actually begin the process to try to get one from Best Buy. I got close a couple of times to landing one from Best Buy but in the end couldn't check out quick enough the times I got one in my shopping cart there.

I normally don't like buying early on consoles, but sounds like there isn't a lot of room to make this thing much cheaper if cost per transistor is going to stay flat on 5nm and 3nm. So felt not a lot of reason to wait. Maybe in 2-3 years there will be a PS5 disc version with a 2TB SSD for $500 instead of the current 825 GB SSD with the way SSD prices are falling though.

It's early in the generation, tbh... but it certainly is noticeable, especially if you're in 4k.

Not just raw cpu/gpu perf, but also the ssd is fast as hell and given time it should allow for some really cool streaming asset tricks.

That game Control that ElNono just posted above is a stuttering mess on base PS4 with drops to around 20 fps but the PS5 can play it 60 fps no sweat, or 30 fps if you want to turn on raytracing. The PS4's gpu probably wouldn't be able to do even 5 fps with RT on in Control. The difference in hardware between PS5 and PS4 is pretty huge. Without going into too much detail, the PS4 is like a low end gaming PC from late 2013. The PS5 is like a midrange / high-end, tilted more towards the high-end, gaming PC from late 2020. There are enormous differences in the computational power between them.

If you had the PS4 Pro that system improves a lot on the gpu vs base PS4, but it still has an enormous achilles heel in the weak ass cpu that held PS4 games back. But gpu is still very significantly improved on PS5 vs PS4 Pro.

God of War 2018 was probably also the greatest feat of engineering ever pulled off on the PS4. My jaw is still dropped to the floor that I could play that game on my PS4 Slim and get a locked 30 fps at 1080p with a game that ambitious. God of War was literally the only game I ever played on PS4 that got my Slim loud enough to hear. And it actually got it pretty loud, not XBox 360 or PS2 Fat level loud, but it was pretty clear that game was pushing the PS4 hardware like nothing else out there. I suspect The Last of Us Part II will be similar if I play it there instead of on PS5 (which I will unless they make a 60 fps patch for PS5 considering the 7.55 hack coming soon for PS4).

It does. Just like every generation, there's tools that need to be built too to take advantage of this stuff also. Need to create higher-res models, retool engines to fully utilize the SSD/streaming content, etc.

Some of the details might be subtle (ie: high quality reflections or lightning), but like I said, if you have a 4k set, you should be able to tell the difference.

And loading speeds is night and day. Just the overall experience is much nicer.

I really can't talk too much about what's coming though, sorry. UE5 is not (officially) out yet either, most of the UE games out there are using 4.25/4.26 which doesn't include Lumen or Nanite in it, and the raytracing support isn't ideal.

I've played that demo on my kit though, and it's even nicer than it looks there due to the YouTube compression.

better sustained frame rates too. i never played dark souls on ps3 but supposedly there was massive frame/lag issues in one area (blighttown) that was completely fixed in the remastered version i played.

Walmart will be quiet another week or two most likely. I think they just wait until they can stockpile a few consoles and then release them all within an hour window one day. Best Buy is who I would be looking to, they seem overdue for a drop and the last BB drops was on a Friday I think. Haven't had one in like 3 weeks now. Make sure to keep those two pages I recommended before loaded with alarms sounds on and have all your CC and shipping info preordered, you're logged in, etc before attempting.

This should be the direct link for the Digital Edition on Walmart, though I wouldn't expect another restock for a couple of weeks.

https://affil.walmart.com/cart/buynow?items=493824815

Yeah it’s because of the queue I was talking about. The way it works is you are put in a line and then are made to wait up to an hour then are randomly selected. You also have to have a PSN ID and be logged in. So it’s not a free for all.

Yeah it’s because of the queue I was talking about. The way it works is you are put in a line and then are made to wait up to an hour then are randomly selected. You also have to have a PSN ID and be logged in. So it’s not a free for all.

That link explains it better.

I refuse to give any CC info to Sony with how often they get hacked and how if someone hacks your PSN account and charges shit to a stored CC you get your account banned if you dispute the charges with your CC company. No thanks there. It's why I buy digital games only with PSN cards.

Sounds like extreme paranoia.

Are you the type that calls in angrily demanding your money back? I have had some issues with them in the past and it has always been resolved. Back when I was a poorsung I used to buy shit with my mother’s card. Her card was the primary card on their site and my psn plus had run out and automatically reupped. After getting chewed out by my mom I called them to undo the fuck up and they complied.

Not really. Sony gets hacked a lot and I have read a few horror stories about people getting their accounts hacked and then having hundreds of dollars of shit bought on them and then they get banned if they try to dispute the charges. I could picture Sony being stupid enough to have passwords in plaintext in 2021.

Just make a new PSN account for the purchase. If your account gets hacked, revert the charge on the CC, and if Sony wants to ban the account, you don't have to care.

You don't have to use the same PSN account to purchase and use the console.

You don't think Sony is going to prioritize long time accounts they know belong to gamers though as opposed to people who just signed up for PSN and are thus much more likely to be scalpers? Isn't scalping really hurting Sony right now? Like system sales have been through the roof, but game sales not so much despite PS5 having probably the best launch lineup any Playstation has ever had.

Wonder if these systems come with any PSN credit? When I got my PS4 they gave me a $10 PSN code free as soon as I signed in to it. Probably not since Sony has to be losing quite a bit of money selling the PS5 at $500.

Sony really did an excellent job making the PS5 UI look extra clean and lean.

Also minor preference but I like how the trophy notification is on the right again. The sounds it makes is also less...poppy and more soothing if that makes sense.

I only see Series S on amazon for scalper prices now. E.g., cheapest one $449. Don't think Series S is that great of value. The SSD is so small, you only get about 300 GB or so to install games. I know people complain about the PS5 SSD, but you get about 600GB usable space which is enough in the early gen. Hell I didn't fill up my PS4 500GB for a couple of years after I bought it and that was when games were dirt cheap since the PS5 was like 5 years old by that time. But god, Series S + 1TB NVME upgrade = $500 to have 500GB more space but a much weaker gpu and no disc slot when compared to the Series X. Don't see the appeal of the Series S at all.

It's mostly for kids tbh. It's perfect for my nephews as they only play games like Fortnite and other online shooters or whatever they're called. Most of their friends also only play a handful of games so I don't think storage is that much of an issue. I'll also pick one up because I only ever play a few titles such as the AC and Red Dead series. Not to mention gamepass which is there if I ever get bored of the major titles. Plus I love the form factor, it looks and feels like a gaming system unlike the PS5 which is so big and bulky.

Forgot about Gamepass. Yeah no reason to keep Gamepass titles on your system for long since you lose them once they're pulled. And for Fortnite, Minecraft, etc gamers makes sense.

Anyways, looks like waiting is the right thing. Controllers sticks already having issues. Which to be honest, it has always been a problem for Sony. I’ve broken a few myself and most of them always end up getting the protective rubber thingy come off at some point.

Doesn't need anything changed. If you liked Persona 5 there is no way you wouldn't like P4G. While it isn't anywhere near as good graphically as Persona 5, it makes up for it in the better characters and story. Really catchy soundtrack too.

The one that could use a little updating is Persona 3. Generally Persona 3 FES (PS2) is the best version of the game but Persona 3 Portable (PSP) gives you more control of your team in battle and has another storyline where you play as a female, which is supposed to be really good (never played it though).

https://blog.playstation.com/2021/02/23/introducing-the-next-generation-of-vr-on-playstation/

Introducing the next generation of VR on PlayStation
First details on the next-generation VR system coming to the PS5 console.

Hideaki Nishino
Senior Vice President, Platform Planning & Management

More than four years ago, we launched PlayStation VR to offer a transformative new way to play games on PS4, providing a much stronger sense of presence and deeper immersion to players compared with traditional games. In that time, we’ve seen tremendous experiences that have propelled virtual reality gaming forward, including highly acclaimed titles like Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Tetris Effect, Blood & Truth, Moss, Beat Saber, and Resident Evil 7 biohazard. We’ve also enhanced the experience for some PS VR titles when played on PS4 Pro and PlayStation 5.

Today I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.

We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.

We also want to thank all of our PS VR players for your continued support — with upcoming games like After The Fall, Sniper Elite VR, and Humanity, there’s much more to come for PS VR whether you’re playing on PS4 or PS5. With both PlayStation VR and the next-generation VR system we’re building, our commitment to virtual reality as a medium for games is stronger than ever. We look forward to sharing more details in the future!

Why would they give it up? You can actually run a decent VR experience off a PS5. PSVR was crap because PS4 was basically like a really low end 2014 gaming PC. PS5 is like a very upper midrange / lower high-end 2021 gaming PC. They can actually make this one good.

The GS bundles would be ok if they didn't all have extra controllers thrown in. Who needs two controllers these days when you play MP games online now?

Also do you have Ratchet & Clank already? It's being given away free on PSN on March 1st. Awesome game if you haven't played it.

I cant believe I made it past the queue today. You definitely have to be within a certain time. Right away I was put within 20 minutes and 1 minute later 9 minutes to go. I had to wait the rest of those 9 minutes. I was then let in and I must have hit a glitch because I spent 5 minutes trying to finish the order and it gave me "an error occured, contact a rep"

It finally said out of stock after almost 10 minutes of trying.

Somehow it still shows the PS5 on my cart just out of stock. Usually you never get let to put an out of stock item on your cart.

Fed ex system is weird. They take odd routes with their packages. One day you’ll see it near your state and the next it’ll be on the opposite side of you. UPS is the same way.
