EXCLUSIVE: WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SONY'S NEXT-GEN PLAYSTATION
MARK CERNY WOULD like to get one thing out of the way right now: The videogame console that Sony has spent the past four years building is no mere upgrade.
You’d have good reason for thinking otherwise. Sony and Microsoft both extended the current console generation via a mid-cycle refresh, with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 spawning mini-sequels (the Xbox One S and PS4 Pro). “The key question,” Cerny says, “is whether the console adds another layer to the sorts of experiences you already have access to, or if it allows for fundamental changes in what a game can be.”
The answer, in this case, is the latter. It’s why we’re sitting here, secreted away in a conference room at Sony’s headquarters in Foster City, California, where Cerny is finally detailing the inner workings of the as-yet-unnamed console that will replace the PS4.
SENIOR CORRESPONDENT PETER RUBIN COVERS CULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR WIRED.
If history is any guide, it will eventually be dubbed the PlayStation 5. For now, Cerny responds to that question—and many others—with an enigmatic smile. The “next-gen console,“ as he refers to it repeatedly, won’t be landing in stores anytime in 2019. A number of studios have been working with it, though, and Sony recently accelerated its deployment of devkits so that game creators will have the time they need to adjust to its capabilities.
As he did with the PS4, Cerny acted as lead system architect for the coming system, integrating developers’ wishes and his own gaming hopes into something that’s much more revolution than evolution. For the more than 90 million people who own PS4s, that's good news indeed. Sony’s got a brand-new box.
A TRUE GENERATIONAL shift tends to include a few foundational adjustments. A console’s CPU and GPU become more powerful, able to deliver previously unattainable graphical fidelity and visual effects; system memory increases in size and speed; and game files grow to match, necessitating larger downloads or higher-capacity physical media like discs.
PlayStation’s next-generation console ticks all those boxes, starting with an AMD chip at the heart of the device. (Warning: some alphabet soup follows.) The CPU is based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen line and contains eight cores of the company’s new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The GPU, a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family, will support ray tracing, a technique that models the travel of light to simulate complex interactions in 3D environments. While ray tracing is a staple of Hollywood visual effects and is beginning to worm its way into $10,000 high-end processors, no game console has been able to manage it. Yet.
Ray tracing’s immediate benefits are largely visual. Because it mimics the way light bounces from object to object in a scene, reflective surfaces and refractions through glass or liquid can be rendered much more accurately, even in real-time, leading to heightened realism. According to Cerny, the applications go beyond graphic implications. “If you wanted to run tests to see if the player can hear certain audio sources or if the enemies can hear the players’ footsteps, ray tracing is useful for that,” he says. “It's all the same thing as taking a ray through the environment.”
The AMD chip also includes a custom unit for 3D audio that Cerny thinks will redefine what sound can do in a videogame. “As a gamer,” he says, “it's been a little bit of a frustration that audio did not change too much between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. With the next console the dream is to show how dramatically different the audio experience can be when we apply significant amounts of hardware horsepower to it.”
The result, Cerny says, will make you feel more immersed in the game as sounds come at you from above, from behind, and from the side. While the effect will require no external hardware—it will work through TV speakers and visual surround sound—he allows that the “gold standard” will be headphone audio.
One of the words Cerny uses to describe the audio may be a familiar to those who follow virtual reality: presence, that feeling of existing inside a simulated environment. When he mentions it, I ask him about PlayStation VR, the peripheral system that has sold more than 4 million units since its 2016 release. Specifically, I ask if there will be a next-gen PSVR to go alongside this next console. “I won't go into the details of our VR strategy today,” he says, “beyond saying that VR is very important to us and that the current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console.”
So. New CPU, new GPU, the ability to deliver unprecedented visual and audio effects in a game (and maybe a PSVR sequel at some point). That’s all great, but there’s something else that excites Cerny even more. Something that he calls “a true game changer,” something that more than anything else is “the key to the next generation.” It’s a hard drive.
THE LARGER A game gets—last year’s Red Dead Redemption 2 clocked in at a horse-choking 99 gigabytes for the PS4—the longer it takes to do just about everything. Loading screens can last minutes while the game pulls what it needs to from the hard drive. Same goes for “fast travel,” when characters transport between far-flung points within a game world. Even opening a door can take over a minute, depending on what’s on the other side and how much more data the game needs to load. Starting in the fall of 2015, when Cerny first began talking to developers about what they’d want from the next generation, he heard it time and time again: I know it’s impossible, but can we have an SSD?
Solid-state drives have been available in budget laptops for more than a decade, and the Xbox One and PS4 both offer external SSDs that claim to improve load times. But not all SSDs are created alike. As Cerny points out, “I have an SSD in my laptop, and when I want to change from Excel to Word I can wait 15 seconds.” What’s built into Sony’s next-gen console is something a little more specialized.
To demonstrate, Cerny fires up a PS4 Pro playing Spider-Man, a 2018 PS4 exclusive that he worked on alongside Insomniac Games. (He’s not just an systems architect; Cerny created arcade classic Marble Madness when he was all of 19 and was heavily involved with PlayStation and PS2 franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and Ratchet and Clank.) On the TV, Spidey stands in a small plaza. Cerny presses a button on the controller, initiating a fast-travel interstitial screen. When Spidey reappears in a totally different spot in Manhattan, 15 seconds have elapsed. Then Cerny does the same thing on a next-gen devkit connected to a different TV. (The devkit, an early “low-speed” version, is concealed in a big silver tower, with no visible componentry.) What took 15 seconds now takes less than one: 0.8 seconds, to be exact.
That’s just one consequence of an SSD. There’s also the speed with which a world can be rendered, and thus the speed with which a character can move through that world. Cerny runs a similar two-console demonstration, this time with the camera moving up one of Midtown’s avenues. On the original PS4, the camera moves at about the speed Spidey hits while web-slinging. “No matter how powered up you get as Spider-Man, you can never go any faster than this,” Cerny says, “because that's simply how fast we can get the data off the hard drive.” On the next-gen console, the camera speeds uptown like it’s mounted to a fighter jet. Periodically, Cerny pauses the action to prove that the surrounding environment remains perfectly crisp. (While the next-gen console will support 8K graphics, TVs that deliver it are few and far between, so we’re using a 4K TV.)
What else developers will be able to do is a question Cerny can’t answer yet, because those developers are still figuring it all out—but he sees the SSD as unlocking an entirely new age, one that upends the very tropes that have become the bedrock of gaming. “We're very used to flying logos at the start of the game and graphic-heavy selection screens," he says, "even things like multiplayer lobbies and intentionally detailed loadout processes, because you don't want players just to be waiting."
At the moment, Sony won’t cop to exact details about the SSD—who makes it, whether it utilizes the new PCIe 4.0 standard—but Cerny claims that it has a raw bandwidth higher than any SSD available for PCs. That’s not all. “The raw read speed is important,“ Cerny says, “but so are the details of the I/O [input-output] mechanisms and the software stack that we put on top of them. I got a PlayStation 4 Pro and then I put in a SSD that cost as much as the PlayStation 4 Pro—it might be one-third faster." As opposed to 19 times faster for the next-gen console, judging from the fast-travel demo.
As you’ve noticed, this is all hardware talk. Cerny isn’t ready to chat about services or other features, let alone games and price, and neither is anyone at Sony. Nor will you hear much about the console at E3 in June—for the first time, Sony won’t be holding a keynote at the annual games show. But a few more things come out during the course of our conversation. For example, the next-gen console will still accept physical media; it won’t be a download-only machine. Because it’s based in part on the PS4’s architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console. As in many other generational transitions, this will be a gentle one, with numerous new games being released for both PS4 and the next-gen console. (Where exactly Hideo Kojima’s forthcoming title Death Stranding fits in that process is still unconfirmed. When asked, a spokesperson in the room repeated that the game would be released for PS4, but Cerny’s smile and pregnant pause invites speculation that it will in fact be a two-platform release.)
What gaming will look like in a year or two, let alone 10, is a matter of some debate. Battle-royale games have reshaped multiplayer experiences; augmented reality marries the fantastic and real in unprecedented ways. Google is leading a charge away from traditional consoles by launching a cloud-gaming service, Stadia, later this year. Microsoft’s next version of the Xbox will presumably integrate cloud gaming as well to allow people to play Xbox games on multiple devices. Sony’s plans in this regard are still unclear—it’s one of the many things Cerny is keeping mum on, saying only that “we are cloud-gaming pioneers, and our vision should become clear as we head toward launch”—but it’s hard to think there won’t be more news coming on that front.
For now, there’s the living room. It’s where the PlayStation has sat through four generations—and will continue to sit at least one generation more.

tl;dr version:
1. It will have ray tracing
2. It will use an eight core cpu based off Ryzen 2
3. It will have an SSD which Mark Cerny claims will be faster than current PC SSDs
4. It will have PS4 backwards compatibility
5. Now go fuck your mother some more

My reactions:
1. Fuck ray-tracing. All it does right now on PC is cut the shit out of your framerate. Looks like this being a 60 fps console like PS2 was ain't happening.
2. What's the point in using a Ryzen cpu if you're going to use RT and have every game running at 30 fps?
3. I hope it's a small SSD just for caching shit from the current game you're playing, because SSD is overrated as fuck and I don't want to pay $600 or $700 like last time Sony was promising the world with their new console.
4. Thank god for PS4 BC so I can retire my PS4 once getting this.
5. Not interested there tbh.

Don’t know anything about computers. Slashing loading screens seems cool. That’s plagued consoles since they switched to disks.
Backward compatibility is a big deal imo.
Curious is what the price point will be with a trade-in of a PS4 slim. As long as Sony continues investing in epic single player experiences, I’ll keep trusting them. I just hope they make a controller with good battery life as opposed to focusing on gimmicks like speakers and lights.

I'd expect trade in value to be shit for PS4. Just like PS1 isn't worth anything since PS2 and PS3 have PS1 BC.

Honestly PoorStation games are so cheap it's not even worth the hassle. Now Switch is highly worth hitting the high seas for since every game is $60 and sale prices are usually $50 for exclusives.

As a hi-fi nerd, they're also overselling the audio. You will not be able to get immersive 3D surround sound from two speakers unless the speakers have some form of active crosstalk cancellation via DSP or use beamforming. Best case is something like Q Sound, which can open up the soundstage to about 180 degrees. I guess the PS5 could have on-board crosstalk cancellation, but I wouldn't count on it, since it requires a lot of CPU horsepower. Also requires head-tracking and in-ear measurements to work effectively. Overselling it on headphones, too. Immersive 3D audio basically requires the same thing on headphones. In-ear measurements and head-tracking. Current solutions are basically rough audio binauralization that places the audio a bit outside the rear/sides of your head. Example is that god awful "8D audio" shit.

Honestly don't really give a shit about the hardware. As long as Sony keeps up their killer library of singleplayer exclusives, it'll be a buy from me. The backwards compatibility is nice though. Will wait a year or two post-release after prices drop and see what games are on the horizon.

If you guys want to wait for big price drops it will likely be more than two years. Mainly because the big price drops usually come after shrinking the lithography. The whole time the PS4 was on 28nm lithography it was a $400 system. As soon as manufacturing went to 16nm in 2016 they discontinued the PS4 and replaced with the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, and then you started seeing $230 or so PS4 Slim pretty regularly. But chip makers had been manufacturing on 28nm since 2011 or so.
The PS5 will be on 7nm and that's still a really new process. So it might be quite a wait until we get a node shrink from 7nm and a PS5 Slim. Especially since node shrinks are taking longer now. In last gen PS3 launched at 90nm, got shrunk to 65nm in the last gen of PS3 fat, and went to 45nm with the Slim (I think the Super Slim stayed on 45nm).
I'll probably wait for a reasonable exclusive game library to get built up unless either Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding are truly amazing and justify the upgrade or if there are killer PS4 trade-in deals to the PS5. I think the former is probably more likely since I guess PS4 will have complete crap value once PS5 launches thanks to the BC.

I got my PS4 at a pretty deep discount long before the slim or Pro were around. There may have been some holiday sales plus other cartwheel crap I used (got ot at Target) don't really remember. In any case, there are always ways to get discounts especially around the holidays once the system is no longer brand new.

500 is actually a reasonable price by today's standards. Hell it would only be a 100 dollar price tag increase over the PS4.
Though I doubt the price would be that low at launch.

That's going to be hard to do given how weak the lolbox has been for the last 7 or so years.
Sony started trashing Microsoft by the end of the PS3 life cycle and completely anihilated them with the PS4.

Well today AMD unveiled Navi 10 as an RTX 2070 competitor at significantly higher power consumption and $450, so this hype about the PS5 being a system with a really killer gpu just got a ton of cold water thrown on it. That was going to depend on AMD making massive efficiency improvements with the lithography shrink to 7nm, but they're not even as power efficient as the Nvidia gpus on 12nm. To even hit a $500 price point with the current gpu price inflation I can't imagine seeing anything better than GTX 1660 performance. So we're probably looking at PS5 being 40-50% more powerful on the gpu side than PS4 Pro.

I'd be absolutely fucking floored if it had PS3 BC. And almost as shocked if it had PS2 BC since Sony wants you to buy the digital versions of PS2 Classics with trophy support added in, not using discs you picked up at Goodwill for a dollar.
The proprietary SSD would also give me pause for using PS5 as a PS2/PS3/PS4 replacement, especially if the fucker is soldered in and/or bound to the console (like the blu-ray drive in the PS3 or the hard drive in the OG XBox), making it not something I could easily replace like we can the PS3/PS4 hard drives.

In Major Blow To Sony’s Upcoming PlayStation 5, Microsoft Announces PlayStation 6
https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/c_scale,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_600/syirliirodl66f5sprkn.jpg
Sony made waves last month when chief architect Mike Cerny gave a first look at the specs for the next-gen successor to the PlayStation 4, making them the first to throw their hat in the ring for the next round of console wars. But all that excitement just fell by the wayside because today, in a major blow to Sony’s upcoming plans for the PlayStation 5, Microsoft announced its new console: the PlayStation 6.
If you are working at Sony, you can’t be happy about this.
The PlayStation 4 has both a rabid fanbase and by far the biggest market share for gaming consoles, currently more than the Xbox One and Switch combined, so for Microsoft to scoop Sony on the next generation of PlayStation is a huge setback. Not only will the PlayStation 6 boast 10th-generation graphics and performance that the ninth generation PS5 can’t match, but Microsoft has also positioned itself to capitalize on the built-in 90-million-person user base of the PlayStation Network.
The PlayStation 6 will also seriously upend Sony’s former dominance in the software department, giving Microsoft access to the huge array of popular PlayStation-exclusive titles such as Uncharted and God Of War. If that wasn’t a big enough slap in the face to Sony, it was revealed during the announcement that the PlayStation 6 will be backwards compatible with all PlayStation games, including the PlayStation 5. Ouch. After the struggles of the Xbox One, Microsoft needed to swing for the fences, and it looks like they just hit it out of the park.
It remains to be seen how Sony responds to getting leapfrogged by Microsoft like this. Some Sony fanboys are already insisting the PlayStation 5 will be better than the PlayStation 6, but it’s going to be a hard sell when the 5 is inferior in every technological sense and has no exclusive games. Sony’s best hope to stay relevant may be appealing to completionist gamers who will want to own both a PlayStation 5 and a PlayStation 6, but no matter what happens, it seems like they will be fighting for second place. By losing out on the next generation of PlayStations to Microsoft, Sony’s place at the top of the console market may have just come to an end.

PS5 is rumored to have a 9.2 TFLOPS gpu, which would put it at RX 5700 XT power. This has gotta be bullshit right? How could you possibly make a console with an 8C/16T Zen 3 cpu (already officially confirmed), an SSD (officially confirmed) that I can't imagine will be anything other than 1TB, and then a 5700 XT level gpu and not completely lose your ass selling it for $500? Especially when there is likely to be 12-16 GB of 14GBps GDDR6 RAM in it? Phil Spencer already confirmed a gpu twice as strong as the one in the XBox One X will be in the high end version of the next XBox, so if he means raw gpu power he'd be talking 12 TFLOPS which really sounds hard to believe too.
These leaks about the new consoles don't add up at all. I mean are PC gamers getting fucked that viciously on hardware prices?

Really wondering if there's even any point to PC gaming if I'm paying $400 just for the gpu just to be on par with next gen consoles. Or in my case below par since my cpu is a 4C/8T Xeon E3-1231v3 that's significantly weaker than the officially announced PS5 cpu.

Just remember that there’s a lot of savings in having the CPU and GPU on the same die, as we’ve seen in the PS4 and XBO.
Sure, you wouldn’t build a system like that for your PC, since you want it to be upgradeable, but in those systems the trade off can actually be exploited as a plus for performance, and include lower costs. Less components, less buses, smaller footprint, less sourcing, less QA, etc.

Kind of disappointing to see from that DigitalFoundry video above that PS5 looks like it'll have a PS4 Pro and a PS4 base mode for the gpu to run at, so sounds like we won't see PS4 games looking better on PS5 like we for instance see some XBox 360 games (eg RDR1) running better on XBox One. I still don't know where DF is getting the idea that system could sell for only $400 though with an RX 5700 XT level gpu, a Ryzen 8C/16T, likely 16GB GDDR6 RAM, and an expensive SSD that will surely be 1TB. I mean $500 sounds like a bargain for that system. $400 sounds like a complete pipe dream.

I would still guess it's a real longshot to get more than PS4 BC. At least now they won't remove it later on like they did with PS2 BC on PS3 since it doesn't need extra hardware. Though maybe we'll get partial PS3 BC like XB1 does for 360 where the more popular games get XB1 ports that download to your hard drive the first time you put a 360 disc in for a supported game. For PS2 I know the PS2 Classics they did for PS4 were upscaled and added trophy support, and you had to buy them off PSN. So I'd imagine that's the best you'll get for PS2 BC in the PS5. God would I love full PS2 emulation in PS5 though. PS1 I don't care since I can do that on my PS3 or my Vita. PS2 I care about though since component input is being quickly phased out of TVs and there is no really good HDMI solution for hooking up a PS2 AFAIK.
What I'm really hoping for out of PS5 is that the 2020 PS4 lineup gets 60 fps + higher resolution patches for PS5 that are free if you own the PS4 version of the game. It would make sense since PS4 has a ridiculously strong 2020 lineup but launch titles for PS5 will likely be pretty crap just like they were for PS4 and PS3. I mean we still don't even know any launch titles for PS5. So Sony could use the strong 2020 PS4 lineup as a de-facto PS5 launch library. Not like I'll ever get through all the great stuff coming out for PS4 this year by the time PS5 launches anyways.

It's stupid. Their E3 presentations were amazing for showing off the games in actual gamplay instead of crap ads and cutscenes like they show in the State of Plays. E3 2016 is the whole reason I bought a PS4. I could actually see in real gameplay that these franchises I had never played were awesome. The normal heavily edited presentations everyone else does are dime a dozen and don't get me hyped to buy a game I wasn't already 100% sold on.

Terrible time to go PC with the cost of gpus. Nvidia took the straight midrange from $250 to $400 this gen and AMD followed suit. And they're not very impressive cards compared to the better priced Pascal lineup from 2016. Most PC components are priced pretty well now (especially cpu and ssd), but the gpu prices suck and it's doubtful these cards are going to hold up well over the generation if the new console baseline is the rumored RX 5700 XT level gpu for the PS5. If you want something more powerful than the rumored PS5 gpu you're looking at $500 US for the RTX 2070 Super at the minimum.
I’m not gonna be an early adapter this time around. Probably won’t be at all but if it’s cheap..who knows.
But if they go back to the crossbar PS3 style I just might buy it from the jump. I still use my PS3 as media. The thing plays music in the background while you do something else and the way it plays video it’s still king. The PS4 is such shit compare to the way the PS3 does. Also can copy files to the hard drive which you can’t do on the PS4.

This one actually looks like it might be worth it though. PS4 was lousy hardware even by the standards of 2013 and PS3 was just terrible design for a gaming console from the ridiculous cpu to not having unified memory (which was probably 360's biggest ace in the hole that gen). But PS5 looks powerful and it looks like it's somewhat of a familiar platform to program for since it's looking like a very upgraded PS4. Maybe the leaks are all bullshit and this will end up with disappointing hardware just like PS4 did, but respected journalists in the field seem to think the leaks could be legit.

Ugh, President Bloomberg says this costs $450 to manufacture. Which is only 8% more than PS4 cost to make in inflation adjusted 2020 dollars, and PS4 had total dogshit in it for hardware. If this is true it means the previous leaks about it having pretty strong hardware have to be bullshit.

Dude, that's exactly what they're doing with PS5. A cpu fully BC with PS4's and an upgraded gpu that can be downclocked and have cores disabled to be a PS4 Pro or PS4 Slim gpu.

If it's 9.2 TFLOPS it means it should be able to run quite a few games at 4k60 fps, and then many others at 1440p or 1800p with checkerboarding to upscale to 4k. The system would be like a strongly upper midrange gaming PC. If it's more like XBox Series X at 12.1 TFLOPS it'll be on par with a quite high end gaming PC.

PS1 3D games look like shit. I thought they looked like shit 25 years ago too. Lots of PS2 games still look great today though. GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, Persona 3/4, Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, Katamari Damacy, God of War, Ratchet & Clank series, Sly Fox series, SSX3, Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, etc are all still awesome to play, and I say that as someone who just got his first PS2 last year.

10.2 TFLOPS RDNA2 is going to be a fucking massively strong gpu. They're going to have to sell this $100 cheaper than Series X though since it has a weaker gpu, slightly weaker cpu, and smaller SSD. RDNA2 must be really fucking impressive to run at 2.23 GHz in a console form factor. So Navi 2 is going to be really impressive for PC.

And the 9.2 TFLOPS leak sounds right, since it was saying 32 compute units clocked at 2.0 GHz. While Sony's 10.2 TFLOPS number comes from the peak boost clock of 2.23 GHz. No boost clock in XBox, or should I say no throttling in XBox. Gotta say I'm leaning XBox for the early part of next gen, especially if Sony doesn't offer free PS5 enhancement patches for their PS4 exclusives. For me it's XBox Series X seems a way better deal than doing a PC upgrade. And I do think I'll want to play some of their exclusives with Ninja Theory and Obsidian now Microsoft studios. While I don't expect PS5 to have enough exclusives I care about early on to make me think it's worth being an early adopter for. Playstation never seems to have great exclusives early on. For PS3 Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls didn't come until 2009. For PS4 there was Bloodborne in 2015 and Uncharted 4 in 2016, but it wasn't until 2017 with Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, NieR Automata, Nioh, and Yakuza 0 that PS4 had the exclusive lineup to make it a no-brainer purchase. Extremely bare exclusives lineup in 2013 and 2014 for PS4.
I won't pre-order either though. I'll wait to see the game lineup Sony shows off this summer.

multiplayer FPS is a great time-sink and is probably the best bang for buck there is in video games. but it also requires a lot of practice, and there's no way my muscle memory is anywhere near as good as it was back when i used to play COD in the ps3 days (last one i played regularly was black ops 2. i played Ghosts a little, but it was pretty shitty since i was still on PS3)
i have a 1 year PS+ subscription that i paid for, but i dont want to activate the code until i know i'm going to be putting an emphasis on MP gaming, which isnt going to be anytime soon, since i still have a shit ton of long single player content. why have the first 8 months of my PS+ membership burning while im playing skyrim and witcher 3 :lol

looks like they're trying to fuse the dualshock with the xbox controller...
battery life is the big question mark. dualshock 4 was trash in that respect
Man that stupid light and the touchpad completely fucked battery life. DS4 has a 33% higher capacity battery than the DS3 but gets maybe 1/5 of the playtime that a DS3 does.

https://www.destructoid.com/playstation-5-to-be-limited-at-launch-due-to-high-costs-suggests-report-587210.phtml
PS5 to see fewer launch units than PS4
A new report from business news outlet Bloomberg suggests that Sony plan to produce only a limited supply of PlayStation 5 units for the console's first year of launch, "far fewer" than that of PlayStation's previous generations.
The report, which Bloomberg attributes to insiders, cites that a powerful and expensive internal composition - and therefore a loftier price tag - is the reason for the smaller production run, commenting that "game developers" are predicting the PS5 to retail for between $499 and $549 at launch. Around five million consoles are expected to be produced for the fiscal year ending March 2021. By comparison, the PS4 shipped 7.5 million consoles in its first half-year.
While it would seem obvious to point to the ongoing COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic as a reason for the limited release, Bloomberg's sources say that global health concerns have only affected Sony's PS5 marketing plans. Production will go ahead as scheduled, in its originally expected capacity, with no last-minute delays on the horizon.
The report also states that Sony plans to further promote its current hardware, PlayStation 4, as a "bridge" to the next generation. It is suggested that Sony will drop the price of the PS4 and the PS4 Pro at the PS5's launch in order to encourage new PlayStation Plus subscriptions.
Of course, the key words here are "suggested" and "predicted," It's worth noting that none of this has been officially announced. Business - all business - is in a completely fragile state right now, with production, marketing, distribution, retail, and overall economic issues worldwide. So, although there is probable truth in elements of this report, the industry as a whole is currently at its most unpredictable.
PlayStation 5 is scheduled to launch Holiday 2020.

Man if it's going to be $499 or higher I'm probably buying an XBox Series X. Then I'll get PS5 in a few years when they put out a Slim that doesn't have cooling problems and will be cheaper. Not like Sony ever has many good exclusives the first couple of years of a console gen anyways.

Unless you have inside information I'd be extremely surprised to see another God of War before say Fall 2022 since Sony always seems to reveal blockbusters at least two years in advance to build hype. Plus Santa Monica isn't known to be the kind of studio to rush games.
Given spec difference between the two and that the best early gen games tend to be multiplats the only way Sony has to win me over this year is price. Otherwise I'll probably get Series X as a gaming PC replacement unless someone can lay out a clear case why PS5's faster SSD means it'll be able to do things Series X can't.

The first two XBox were really good and this one looks great too. They were only shit this gen because their retard CEO Don Mattrick had XBox One designed as an HTPC instead of a gaming console, but that faggot is long since gone. At this point XBox Series X is a no-brainer over a gaming PC unless you're really into RTS that are terrible on a console. And Sony isn't likely to have the exclusives to make me buy the lesser hardware until a few years into the gen. It wasn't until 2017 that PS4 really had enough exclusives to be worth buying, though it became must-buy pretty quickly in 2017. Same with PS3 until 2009 when Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2, inFAMOUS, and Killzone 2 came out.
Speaking of Nintendo, Switch sounds like it's getting Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Super Mario Sunshine, and I forget what else this year to celebrate the 35 year anniversary of Super Mario Bros. Good luck finding one right now though while they're being price gouged to hell. Wonder what I could get for my CFW Switch. :lol

im going to inevitably get a PS5 because i know there will be God of War and there will almost certainly be Horizon 2. the even limited backward compatibility is appealing because we dont like clutter around the TV. im not going to buy a poorbox as a placeholder because it is a slightly stronger machine that will provide functionally the same gameplay experience

Series X would be my main gaming system, not the placeholder, since it's the more powerful one. Well, if they are similarly priced. With Ninja Theory and especially Obsidian being Microsoft studios now I'm going to buy one anyways. Though I'm the opposite, my main TV has a PS2, PS3, PS4, Playstation TV, Switch, and a BC Wii connected to it right now and sometimes I put my 360 or SNES Classic on it also. :lol
Retired my Raspberry Pi though since the SNES Classic plays SNES and NES games way better and the PS3 plays PS1 games with a really good emulator, while my hacked Switch is better for Genesis and arcade games than the Pi.

No it won't. Neither console will have good exclusives most likely early on. The only company that ever launches with good exclusives is Nintendo.

How much is the box gonna be? Cant imagine it will be more than 50 bucks less.
If the PS5 has an improved intreface unlike the mess that is the PS4, I might buy it within the next year, otherwise, I'll wait a couple.

If PS5 is going to go for $500 I think Microsoft will try to match that price to win back market share after the disaster of ShitBox One.
