(CNN) Coronavirus patients taking hydroxychloroquine, a treatment touted by President Trump, were no less likely to need mechanical ventilation and had higher deaths rates compared to those who did not take the drug, according to a study of hundreds of patients at US Veterans Health Administration medical centers.
The study, which reviewed veterans' medical charts, was posted Tuesday on medrxiv.org, a pre-print server, meaning it was not peer reviewed or published in a medical journal. The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the University of Virginia. In the study of 368 patients, 97 patients who took hydroxychloroquine had a 27.8% death rate. The 158 patients who did not take the drug had an 11.4% death rate.
"An association of increased overall mortality was identified in patients treated with hydroxychloroquine alone. These findings highlight the importance of awaiting the results of ongoing prospective, randomized, controlled studies before widespread adoption of these drugs," wrote the authors, who work at the Columbia VA Health Care System in South Carolina, the University of South Carolina and the University of Virginia.
Researchers also looked at whether taking hydroxychloroquine or a combination of hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin, had an effect on whether a patient needed to go on a ventilator.
"In this study, we found no evidence that use of hydroxychloroquine, either with or without azithromycin, reduced the risk of mechanical ventilation in patients hospitalized with Covid-19," the authors wrote.
There are currently no products approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to prevent or treat Covid-19, although research is underway on many drugs.
Hydroxychloroquine has been used for decades to treat patients with diseases such as malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
Trump has touted the drug as a "game changer" for Covid-19 and said hydroxychloroquine shows "tremendous promise."

I’m a bit opposite of this. He was slow for sure but I think it would only marginally change things had he been a week or two quicker. We weren’t ever going to have a hard lockdown and that’s the only thing that would have drastically changed things early on.
His grandstanding about ratings and demanding appreciation while playing favorites and deflecting responsibility has made things go from bad to worse.

I understand politics will never allow you to say anything positive about California but their response was within a reasonable timeframe and as of now it looks like it was the right level of lockdown to avoid a NYC scenario. Additionally the people in those areas did a good job following the guidelines and stuck with it... and it made a difference.

Hard to say and other studies showed good results. More studying needs to be done. It’s possible they administered the drug as a last resort to some that were too far gone. I’d like to compare this sample size to other studies.

There have been several other studies indicating the drug has promise. So who really knows how effective it is at this stage.
The problems with the drug are multifaceted. My wife takes it for a non Covid condition. She has to see specialists to ensure its not effecting her heart or making her go blind. So when Trump says its powerful...he is right, but wrong when he claims its safe. It can be safe, but some can not tolerate it.
The other issue is the dumbing down of the immune system. Some patients are susceptible to these "Cytokine storms". Where their immune system goes bat shit crazy and kills tissue and ultimately the host. But others are not. So in their case giving them the drug might hinder their immune system's ability to fight the infection. And we have no way to know who is a good candidate for the drug. It's pissing in the wind.
None of that changes the fact that CNN is a disgusting pile of lying garbage and deserves all the negative Karma that comes their way.

I think some are falling away from the cult, not massive amounts, but then again, he won the election by 100,000 votes in 3 key states (MI, WI, PA). Wouldn't take much to collapse that house of cards.
There's a retired military officer (base stickers on his cars) that lives about a block away from me, and depending which way I go to leave my subdivision, I pass his house. Since 2015, and all the way through the impeachment process, he's had a Trump sign on his lawn. It's no longer there, after basically 5 years. It's really not hard to see Trump mentally falling apart on TV each and every day. Trump loves to be on TV, but this is a worst case scenario for him. He doesn't get to talk about what he wants. Can't say I always agree, though I do agree with the statement when considering the current GOP. But I'll be forever grateful to George H.W. Bush for how he handled the fall of the Berlin Wall. Even without the deaths, the pandemic is extremely destructive to the republic with the way it has destroyed small business and has sent us into an almost certain depression. Actually, it's pretty unlikely. We don't have the same legal system, nor the same level of let's call it "social control" as they do:
"South Korea has used data from surveillance cameras, cellphones and credit card transactions to map the social connections of suspected cases."
Legally getting access to that data in the US would be extremely difficult, especially tied to individual medical records. Not to mention that kind of thing is theoretically a state level responsibility - you would have to get them onside. Not to mention our government integrated surveillance camera density (and data integration) is simply miniscule compared to theirs.
"In 2014, South Korean cities had over 8 million CCTV cameras, or one camera per 6.3 people. In 2010, everyone was captured an average of 83.1 times per day and every nine seconds while travelling. These figures are likely to be much higher today. Considering the physical size of the country, it is safe to say South Korea has one of the highest densities of surveillance technology in the world."
Whereas in the US, the vast majority of CCTV cameras are in private and commercial use, not databased for national use. It would be very hard to implement the South Korean model

Yep, it's been absolutely clear that a lot of the publicly released modeling has been absolute garbage (2.2 Million dead, WTF?). He may have panicked. It's impossible to prove with any certainty, but a nationwide shutdown may not have been justified; handling it state by state might have been more appropriate (and definitely less economically damaging).
If he'd learned the mask lesson: everybody masks...N95 is nice (save them for healthcare personnel/emergency responders), but not a requirement, from Taiwan/South Korea/Hong Kong, we'd have been much better off, IMO.
He runs his mouth a lot, but a) he's always done that, and b) he is trying to fight a political war, with a national press that's more interested in pulling him down than helping the country.
You could say he didn't have the vision to understand what was coming, but he did react quite quickly (for a US gov't). Sadly you can't read. I always said older with preexisting conditions are and were vulnerable. This is still what the data shows and will always show no matter the disease. Go through any country or state by state data. A vast majority are older than 70 with 1 plus pre existing condition. If that ever changes, I will gladly applaud you for keeping me on the path to safety.

No. In all recent assumptions since and leading up to the shut down of states in march, the cdc and health departments have been utilizing models that factored in social distancing measures, and have had to adjust those models numerous times. Which is their prerogative, but the numbers were off by too much, hence the furlouging of hospital employees and low hospital capacity numbers. Now its just about trying to save face as much as "save lives" which is, unfortunately what they have to do, but sad none the less.

I responded that, in fact they did. The original model that was used is the imperial college, which started, and is a major factor in federal and state restrictions, did include mitigation.
Its sad that you don't understand that models have many assumptions regarding the data. Models including mitigation versus do nothing, are why the government has intervened.
Similarly multiple models, which you say have never changed, including Washington and Ohio state models, have changed dramatically from the beginning.

I mean bioaeresols could travel 4 inches, but I would be interested to read if that could be possible.
