Not really? COVID causing pneumonia is the main killer. LOL your flu comment. So don't breathe nor talk around old people at any time?
Also, flu causes pneumonia. That's also why people die....

And the virus has been shown to be spread airborne. That church choir in Seattle was the first known case of it.
Covid may very well end up being more fatal than the flu time will tell. Covid is still hitting a demographic that is always at risk to any illness. Its unfortunate to say the least.

I didn't say anything about the flu in that quote. Additionally the virus isn't proven to be spread by talking. I mean bioaeresols could travel 4 inches, but I would be interested to read if that could be possible. But going back to the main point, if you aren't 70 and have a preexisting condition it won't matter if you get it, in terms of dying.Unless, of course, you die.

I think flu season is oct through the first week of May. 2017 2018 had 61k deaths, so covid is right there. The problem lies on the associated with death. Just like the flu, attributing to and listed as cause. We are seeing the same thing with covid. Like the 100 percent actual death rate, we will never know for either virus. Such is life.

Neither. The people who are dying from this are just like the people who are dying from other diseases. You age, your risk goes up. You age, your chance of having another issue increases.
For instance Iin ny. There are 165k confirmed cases. There are probably more, right? Sure. 0lage 0 through 20. 3 have died. All 3 had underlying conditions. So your risk is extremely low either way. Your risk seems to be 0 to die if you get it In that range with no conditions. BUT if you have a pre existing condition, just like with any other illness, your response to that virus will be worse. In this case, for that age range, you have a
.001 percent chance of death. And that is being extremely generous.

How does 61,000 in 7 months = 61,000 in 1 month?
It doesnt. But the point is both of the viruses are attributed factors of death.
So let's say you have the flu. You get covid. You die. Your cause of death is covid in the stats. It's true, but its also not.
It's like alcohol related fatalities stats. You and I go to the bar. Your my designated driver. A sober person crashes into you and kills us. It's counted as an alcohol related fataility. Why?
Same thing here. But again, let's move the conversation. Do you think the shut down is appropriate?

My model was exactly what I said in the post above. It would be similar to Sweden. The public policy enacted has significantly altered and possibly ruined millions of lives including children, has increased poverty, lowered overall mental health, increased other health risks, and has done damage to the economy that may or may not result in even more of the following. The response will never be able to prove, what, if any lives were saved. Nor has the government addressed the dangers of unhealthy lifestyles which added to those the government shut down to assist.

If you get sick from anything it is not pleasant. If you get the flu, it is not pleasant. If you get coronavirus 85 percent of people will not go to the hospital. She is one of the 15 percent, unfortunately. Even if she needed medical treatment, the stats show her demographic has an extremely low chance of death. Fortunately, she will be included in that stat. So 2. 2 had no underlying conditions. And he said they were afraid to seek help?. Interesting, but they survived, right? Something to continue to read about for sure. Still doesn't do anything to my opinion unless those numbers increase.
I understand that this is scary for you, but why name-calling? I didn't vote for Trump, nor am I blaming anyone other than China for allowing wet markets to occur. Not sure. You,?More than a third of American adults — or 105 million people — are at higher risk of serious illness if they get infected with the coronavirus, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis of CDC data. For most of them, their age puts them in danger: More than 76 million Americans are 60 or older. The remaining 29 million people are younger but have underlying health issues.

Models based on human behavior have a tendency to be wrong as humans react differently especially if you tell them of a potential outcome. Saying that, as long as the USA won't count deaths outside of hospitals, it'll be hard to tell the real numbers and I don't expect the Trump administration to be transparent, quite the opposite in fact, he is not known to tell the truth.

again, you are only taking into account deaths in hospitals which far from reality. So how can you compare two things when you don't have the real numbers? Based on European countries that take nursing homes deaths into account, you can add 40000 and you still don't have people who died at home (estimated at another 40% of the total in hospitals in France) so you could be already around 130 000 in the US, more than just a flu when applying confinement

"(Bloomberg) -- New York City added thousands of people to its coronavirus death toll to account for victims who died in recent weeks without a confirmed diagnosis.

So I got busy for a while, but:
Neither Baseline Bum nor ChumpDumper has dared answer my 5 questions. It's like they're afraid...
So here they are again:
1) When was the last time a presidential candidate was forced out of a speaking engagement in a major city by threats of violence?
2) Did the mayor of the city or the governor of the state support the candidate speaking and pull out all the stops to keep order, or did they give in to the threats without trying to resist?
3) Which party was the presidential candidate from? Which party did the mayor and the governor belong to?
4) Is this a major violation of the constitutional rights of free speech and free assembly?
5) Has such a thing happened to a presidential candidate of the other party after 1900? Ever?
Given you're too scared to answer, I'll answer them for you
1) Chicago, 2016.
2) Definitely did not go to the wall for this. I may have missed it, but neither of their offices so much as issued a statement calling for the demonstrators to avoid violence... If they needed manpower, this would be a legitimate use the Illinois National Guard.
3) Don Trump of course, Republican. Then Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) and Bruce Rauner (RINO, definitely anti-Trump; supports abortion, automatic voter registration, sanctuary state status).
4) YES. Not just Trump right to free speech, but also his supporters right to free assembly to hear free speech - that's thousands of people's civil rights on the night.
5) I am not aware of a similar incident in the history of the United States.

So what does this mean in the larger context.
The current democrat party is unwilling to extend civil rights to their political opponents. Consider the following examples (not an exhaustive list):
Free Speech
1) Don Trump in Chicago ,
2) 2012 IRS Targeting
It’s been getting worse – now they are jumping non-political speech, because it might support their opposition
3) AytuBioScience and their Healight video on youtube. It was pulled for “Violating Community Standards”. Which means people (democrat activists) complained about it, saying it was a fake. It’s not. But they don’t care – if it supports republicans, your not allowed to say it.
The Fourth Amendment – “The right of the people to be secure …against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause…”
1) Carter Page – the FISA court bullshit to spy on the Trump campaign
2) Adam Schiff – Issued SECRET subpoenas for opponents phone records. Secret subpoena’s can’t be contested in court because you don’t’ know about them. This is a warrantless search.
Due Process Rights
1) Mike Flynn
2) Ted Stevens
Equality before the Law
1) Hillary Clinton. Even if you think her security violations werent’ criminal, consider he subpoena response.
2) Tim “turbotax” Geithner
3) Antifa violence. You think a group of masked right wing thugs would get their pass?
The Second Amendment – yes I know you disagree with it:
1) Beto O’Rourke – "Hell, yes, we're going to take your AR-15, your AK-47."
2) Joe Biden - “You’re going to take care of the gun problem with me. You’re going to be the one who leads this effort.”, speaking about Beto O’Rourke.
It is clear that the Democrat party has decided that their political power is more important than their opponents civil rights. There are only a few possible outcomes from this:
1) They get sane and quit it. This only happens if they crushed by their left wing base saying this behaviour is not acceptable.
2) They take permanent power through this corruption, becoming a US version of the PRI. That functionally kills the Constitution – end of the republic. It also probably ends in another civil war.
3) We fight a second civil war – also quite possibly killing the constitution.
The US has demonstrated it can survive plagues, foreign dictators and geo political opponents. But one of our 2 political parties deciding the founding documents (Constitution & Declaration of Independence) just aren’t relevant any more? That’s a recipe for another civil war.

More than a third of American adults — or 105 million people — are at higher risk of serious illness if they get infected with the coronavirus, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis of CDC data. For most of them, their age puts them in danger: More than 76 million Americans are 60 or older. The remaining 29 million people are younger but have underlying health issues.

Absolutely wild to see American posters saying the pandemic is "no big deal" when they're creeping up to 65 THOUSAND deaths in a month and rapidly rising. And even IF the risk of death for people aged 20 was "00.1%" (not a number that I trust but whatever) - don't you all have families? Parents or grandparents, and otherwise elderly members? It's kind of fucked up to dismiss the disease because it's most mortal to older people. And now that we know even young, healthy people can get life-changing respiratory conditions from Covid-19..... Damn.
But sure, washing hands definitely prevents 100% of infections. I wonder how 60k people never thought of that. This thread was funnier when deaths were very low, it's kind of sad now. Stay safe everyone.

never trivialized anything each death is tragic. my issue was the destruction of the world economy, sucks that so many people aren’t going to have jobs to go back to. I’m glad our president wants to get the country back to work when feasible and safe. I also hope he continues putting pressure on 3M etc to get people the PPE they need.
and it’s no question that the US is doing better than Europe. For all the stats and math people love here people get butthurt when people point out Europe death rates are at least double and at worst 4-5x as bad as ours. They’re objectively worse at handling the pandemic than we are.. Italy is probably even worse too, they’re not even testing people past a certain age. We’re so spread out that we aren’t going to ever be as bad off as them.

A positive test result shows you may have antibodies from an infection with the virus that causes COVID-19. However, there is a chance a positive result means that you have antibodies from an infection with a virus from the same family of viruses (called coronaviruses), such as the one that causes the common cold.

America #1
Of course you're still voting Trump. Not because he's a shitty candidate (I personally don't care for him), but because you lack the critical thinking skills, and the self-awareness, to take a step back, and realize you might have been wrong somewhere along your rabid, inane, utterly stupid charade along not only this thread, but your life in general. You'll vote Trump because it's all you know - all you've been taught to know. And the funny thing is, you won't recognize your shortcomings as you fold the ballot, there won't be a realization as you walk out the dark room; no, you'll come out just as blind as you entered, shackled in chains your fanatism doesn't allow you to see. Maybe someday, once the years have passed and you've known and experienced realities different than the ones you've seen, you will understand why and how you were wrong. If being told you're wrong so many times, and being proven wrong so many times, have not changed your views, it's clear the passage of time is the only salvation you can cling on to.
And yes, America remains #1 in both cases and deaths from COVID-19. By a large margin. Like they've been for months... Is the toast over this sad fact? Cheers...

You managed to get all three assumptions wrong. Literally not even one correct, even after you've resorted back to your sad Euro insults on me before and I've told you I'm not from there. And I pity the US... The folks that have to suffer living next to people like you, at least. No hate, just pity. The rest of the world feels the same way... But to you it looks like an attack - you can't understand being pitied on, because it would imply you're not on top of the world anymore, you're deserving of pity.
I guess you've dug your hole deep enough that it doesn't hurt to just keep digging, right? Keep at it. I'm sure someone out there is glad that they don't even have to pay you to spout these ridiculous comments. I wonder how long it'll take before you inevitably start backpedalling, or switch to an alt - luckily, I have my popcorn ready.

I have worked in healthcare for over 40 years. The virus stats are what they are and I and my family limit our engagement in the community, wear mask, do social distancing and wash our hands. There are stats about the virus that made me want to know more.
We have been told that half of coronavirus patients who died are nursing home patients. So I wanted to know what is the average age of a person entering the nursing home. I found that the age is 83.
I wanted to know how many people are in the nursing home? There are 1.3 million before the virus and there are 1.3 million today.
This lead me to ask how long is it before people die in the nursing home? I found that half of all nursing home admits die within the first five months and the remainder on average die within 13 months. This means that before the virus we have 100k deaths in the nursing home each month and the fact that the total admit level has not changed it would appear that those that died were following a normal trend.
So, the next part of my research which is more difficult to find is how many of the remaining people had comorbidities (other conditions) and of those comorbidities how many were noncompliant to their treatment, meaning for example they had diabetes and still ate whatever they wanted. I feel I will not be able to answer these questions until well after issues of the virus has ended.
I am not going to try and provide an interpretation of my findings but I thought it was relevant to share.

Here are a bunch of lies from Trump on the coronavirus situation.
Wednesday, February 19:The coronavirus would weaken “when we get into April, in the warmer weather—that has a very negative effect on that, and that type of a virus.”
Thursday, February 27: The outbreak would be temporary: "IT's going to disappear. One day, it's miracle _ it'll disappear
Monday, March 2: Pharmaceutical companies are going “to have vaccines, I think, relatively soon.”
Friday, March 6, and Monday, May 11: “ Anybody that needs a test, gets a test. We—they’re there. They have the tests. And the tests are beautiful (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-tour-centers-disease-control-prevention-atlanta-ga/)” and “If somebody wants to be tested right now, they’ll be able to be tested (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-press-briefing-covid-19-testing/).”
Thursday, March 19: FDA had approved the antimalarial drug chloroquine to treat COVID-19. “Normally the FDA would take a long time to approve something like that, and it’s—it was approved very, very quickly and it’s now approved by prescription,”
Tuesday, March 24, and Wednesday (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1242824631230308353?s=20), March 25: The United States has outpaced South Korea’s COVID-19 testing: “We’re going up proportionally very rapidly,”
Sunday, March 29, and Monday, March 30: Hospitals are reporting an artificially inflated need for masks and equipment, items that might be “going out the back door,” Trump said on two separate days. He also said he was not talking about hoarding: “I think maybe it’s worse than hoarding.”
Multiple times “Coronavirus numbers are looking MUCH better, going down almost everywhere,” and cases are “coming way down.”
Friday, April 24: Trump was being “sarcastic (https://www.factcheck.org/2020/04/the-white-house-spins-trumps-disinfectant-remarks/)” when he suggested in a briefing on April 23 that his medical experts should research the use of powerful light and injected disinfectants to treat COVID-19.
Multiple times: Taking hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 is safe. “You’re not going to get sick or die,” Trump said on one occasion. “It doesn’t hurt people,” he commented on another.
Friday, May 8 (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/video/2020/may/09/donald-trump-coronavirus-will-go-away-without-a-vaccine-video) The coronavirus is “going to go away without a vaccine … and we’re not going to see it again, hopefully, after a period of time.”
Monday, May 11: America has “developed a testing capacity unmatched and unrivaled anywhere in the world, and it’s not even close.”
The United States has conducted more testing “than all other countries together (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1260166181513842688?s=20)!”
Wednesday, June 17th: The pandemic is “fading away. It’s going to fade away.”
Thursday, July 2nd: The pandemic is “getting under control.”
Saturday, July 4: “99%” of COVID-19 cases are “totally harmless.”
Monday, July 6th: “We now have the lowest Fatality (Mortality) Rate in the World.”
Multiple times "The Trump White House “inherited” a “broken,” “bad,” and “obsolete” test for the coronavirus.
Multiple times: “Cases are going up in the U.S. because we are testing far more than any other country.”

Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including more than 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day. On average, smokers die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers.

I'm no Trump fan, especially after he botched COVID and acted out of political expediency, which was clear months ago. To be honest, the Woodward interview didn't move the dial for me because it was plain to see all along. That said, I don't know that deaths are on Trump. I think the numbers would be the same regardless of who was president. The US can't impose harsh control over the population like other countries and too many people are unwilling to alter their lifestyles regardless of what Trump or anyone else would have said. There were eptimologists making all kinds of recommendations and people ignored them. So I strongly doubt any president would have averted the high number of deaths. It's just something that was going to happen unfortunately. I mean, maybe you could argue that Cuomo caused unnecessary deaths by keeping the infected in nursing homes, but other than that, telling people this is more deadly than the flu probably doesn't impact at least a third of the country and that's all it takes.

Europe isn’t China or authoritarian, and yet they’re almost back to normal. They did it with a lockdown about six weeks longer than ours, and national mask orders, per country. A president leading and setting a national policy, as opposed to one fucking off and playing golf every other day, would probably have kept our death count at 40-50k. Trump didn’t set rules, because he doesn’t like to follow them.

Again, I'm not defending Trump, I'm just realistic. Americans aren't Europeans. They were not going to go another 6 weeks of lockouts. President Trump did a terrible job handling the virus and certainly acts in his own self interest and not the general welfare of the public, but what I would have expected. But it's nonsense to think that Americans would have stayed locked up for 6 more weeks. It's also nonsense to think that any one person can stop people from going out and exposing themselves to COVID and transmitting to others. Between people going crazy on "lockdown," the economic meltdown, the protests (from the right and the left)/riots, and the fact that many Americans have not seen the impact of COVID first hand on someone they know, especially in smaller communities, the spread was always going to happen. Probably the most preventable outbreak was in senior homes when Cuomo sent sick people back to nursing homes. That doesn't mean Trump should not be fired for his handling of COVID, but I don't think it means he killed 50,000 people or whatever. That's just not true.

I can see your point. An embarrassing amount of US citizens love themselves, their political party, and conspiracies more than anything else. Squeezing in facts to that lot is rather difficult. I will say though,Trump often sets the tone within his base easily. I am not putting the entire count on him,but I do believe he could have managed it better, which in turn could have lead to less loss of life. That had to start with being a leader and he simply isn't capable of being one.
