It's lowering global temperatures a tiny amount short term. It seems to have released about a year's worth of CO2 relative to the area around Tonga.

None of this explains why DMC wants to distract from his failure.

Roy Warren Spencer (born December 20, 1955)[1] is a meteorologist,[2] a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the U.S. Science Team leader for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) on NASA's Aqua satellite.[3][4] He has served as senior scientist for climate studies at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center.[3][4] He is known for his satellite-based temperature monitoring work, for which he was awarded the American Meteorological Society's Special Award.[4] Spencer disagrees with the scientific consensus that most global warming in the past 50 years is the result of human activity, instead believing that anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have caused some warming, but that influence is small compared to natural variations in global average cloud cover.

At least you're honest about it. I believe most people feel how you do about it, that it's a bad financial investment but if someone is so knocked up about the environment, they should become as green as possible. The extremely green types at least show some investment into what they claim to believe. The rest are just talkers and finger pointers.

Volcanic eruptions are often discussed in relation to climate change because they release CO2 (and other gases) into our atmosphere. However, human contributions to the carbon cycle are more than 100 times those from all the volcanoes in the world - combined.
In comparison, while volcanic eruptions do cause an increase in atmospheric CO2, human activities emit a Mount St. Helens-sized eruption of CO2 every 2.5 hours and a Mount Pinatubo-sized eruption of CO2 twice daily.

Are you talking about bullet trains? San Antonio is overrun with empty VIA busses. Thats why they put those ambulance chaser ads on them so you can't see in.

Was talking more about subways or trains serving the city, though shinkansens would be really nice too just to have a viable competitor to the airlines. Not talking about shit like Via that almost no one other than those too poor to afford cars would use for daily commutes since buses take forever and run super inconsistent schedules thanks to traffic. Had no choice but to use buses to and from work while in college and they sucked.

I still love living here but the number of days 3or 4 degrees over 100 is really the most ridiculous stat for me.

You can however alter what you do outside and there is some level of adapting available.
Biking really helps replace running if you properly equip yourself and move through the air quickly. Evaporative cooling by using the right clothing and watering yourself down is a huge help if you crave exercise. Swimming laps is also great. But you have to adapt your work time to for the lap swimming pool times. It’s possible, but probably not for poorer folks.

I mean...most people have some kind of access to a public lake. If they're really wanting to swim for exercise. Or a public pool. Or the YMCA, which isn't free but has a lot of exercise options depending on where you live.
We put in a pool last year and I knew it was a losing proposition if you base it on how many days people actually swim in it. Plus you don't get that money back in most cases when you sell the house. Plus maintenance.

That would have suited me fine. But we've got kids and a couple of grandkids so it was really something my wife wanted to do for all of them. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it. But when I do the math, it doesn't make sense. We could have used a small portion of the investment for a great overseas trip or two. And still have a bunch left over for whatever paid swimming anyone wanted to do. Plus, as hot as it's been, I don't even want to go outside and fuck with it all. Clean the pool, clean the skimmers, test the water, blow up floats, jump in, dry off to go get something inside.

I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with? If you live in Texas, you shouldn't be too far from a lake with public access. We did it all the time as kids. And where I live now, there are a couple of very nice public parks with lake access. So yeah...if I really thought I needed to swim to get the most beneficial exercise, I could make that happen. That being said, I'm sure I'm too lazy to do that. But it's an option. I do get that it's something that would be a grind to do a few times a week. But if swimming is your thing, it's available. And as I said, public pools and the YMCA are options. Not to mention all the hospital affiliated work out places. We've got one not to far away that offers pool, weights, for cheaper than the Y. And for a few buck more, Yoga, Pilates, and whatever else you might want to do. And the family cost is cheaper than going out to eat for one night.

I guess I was basing my comments on the original, "It’s possible, but probably not for poorer folks." To me, that's not only talking about poverty level poor. Just that a pool might be out of reach. There are plenty of people who can't afford a pool but not, "poor". I don't know anyone that goes to a lake for exercise either. But I'm sure they're out there. It doesn't have to just be swimming laps. Anyway...just pointing out that not having a pool doesn't mean there aren't other options to swim...if that's your thing and what you really want to do. Maybe the lake was the worst example compared to the Y or a local health facility.

No idea about SA. Maybe I am overestimating it now looking at a map. You keep ignoring my comments about the YMCA though. For a decent price, you can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal, you pretty much do whatever you feel.
But for real, you can get a family membership for less than $100 and they do have financial aid. Or you can get a cheap above ground pool. Or you can do like thousands of people do and go into debt and build one. But, you're acting like you have to be rich to swim.

They actually do have group triathlete swims at Boerne lake which is sort of "close" time wise. Its good for open swims such as one might encounter in these contests.
But again it costs money to get in, it costs money to join the group, and if your job is not flexible the hours may be out of possibility in your daily life.
And honestly, people who train for these things have to have a super strict schedule and time.

I met a group of guys who work construction and then bike after work. I saw them eating at lunch at my favorite Mexican food restaurant and then met them on the trails. Asked them how they were able to accomplish this. And they said trail biking was something they HAD to do for fun. I asked them if they knew other construction workers who did this and I got a giant NO. Very impressive group. But super rare. And with daylight savings time in the future I dont know what they do because it will be dark when they get off. Bottom line it costs money to even exercise properly in this kind of weather. And it certainly might not fit in with work.

I personally think this is a shame because physical health makes going to school, work, etc... much more productive imo. We dont need families sitting inside during the summer just sweating it out getting on each others nerves. It makes work harder for the police. We saw what Covid caused when it kept families inside. Not good. But hopefully fall through spring will allow peeps to get out and about more.

Oh hell its a complete mystery the 1850 number?
I mean nothing like CO2 levels shot up or anything like that with the advent of machines that worked off of wood and other carbon fuel.
Brain dead people. The Industrial Revolution and the results of it are like a complete mystery??????????? The greatest upslope of warming occurred in 1975 to now. Its NOT linear.

This video above is loaded with wrong. This rate is very unusual. This guy is not a climatologist. Physics people are also especially bad at trying to make broad statements knowing only their field. The ATMOSPHERE plays a large role. And all the physicists that are sure we can measure human intelligence when they have no idea what this even means. Stay in your lane. You are not an expert in THE FIELD you speak about. The experts say you are wrong.

We cut out CFCs to prevent ozone depletion and by god.... it WORKED. So thinking humans cannot change the atmosphere is just totally ridiculous. We solved acid rain in Canada and other Europeans zones as well. We figured at what caused it and we changed our ways.

Humans are evolved TROPICAL species he says. And then what the hell did we do? Go populate deserts, coastlines, and some of the coldest places on EARTH. We are not apes only walking around a savannah anymore. This guy above seem to think so.

This stuff above is just absolutely boffo silly. It completely misses the point that there are now 7.8 billion people living in all kinds of places. Not 100,000 souls not understanding much of anything and barely getting by in any sort of extremes. There where very few people on the face of the earth when we lived in ONLY tropical climates. We can handle the heat, but its already costing huge amounts of money. I thought the red team was worried about spending and budgets, and longer term thinkers?

Or its just "I live right NOW, so fk the future" ? Humans wont go extinct anytime soon unless we have some sort of large impact or possibly a nuke party. But denying the Earth atmosphere and oceans are warming at rates beyond what we have experienced before is total BS. And saying we have zero impact is also total BS. And its costing us, the world, a hell of a lot of money.

This video is bull shit.

Access is one thing, time is another.
Kids can go play in the sprinkler system on watering day. That’s fun.
Im just really saying I got access to lap swimming or playing around and an hour and a half or so as a part of work.
I think it’s healthy activity but I understand not everyone has this luxury.
People who work physically taxing jobs outside all day usually are not in for exercise after work, and can’t during work.
Those jobs outdoors also do not do a good job from a healthy exercise point of view imo. Because I have done them. We had an exchange concerning wire fences on this.

If you really want to know my opinion, it's a moot discussion. As much as people understand swimming is great exercise, most don't do it even with the means. I've probably used our pool 5 or 6 times this year. And none of it was for swimming laps. Sure a couple times I did go down and back but for the most part, I just sat in the water with a beer.

As to outside jobs, it depends on what it is. But in general, being outside, moving around, sweating...that's pretty beneficial. Even if it's not necessarily aerobic.

you should go to the lake with CC, I hear it's nonstop fun.

Me : "oh hey, nice place. thanks for inviting me."
CC lets me know how much everything cost including property, house, JetSkis, craft beer, his bathing suit. Also shows me a wad of cash he made by flipping a 1985 Camero.

Yeah...sounds like a blast.

Season pass to Boerne lake is only $125 per vehicle. It's not a good lake to just go splash around in like Blake wants to do. Most of the time I go after working out at the gym and swim from the boat ramp to the point on the right and back, which is the half mile route. Sometimes if it's calm enough and I'm not too tired from the gym, I'll just do boat ramp straight across the lake and back which is the 1 mile route.

If Boerne lake is inaccessible to you then you could go swim in the river at Brackenridge Park or at many locations along Salado creek.

It can be boring as hell just swimming laps.
Im just hunting down alternatives to get outside or into a comfortable place where it s not scorching.
Maybe we just become nocturnal.

Physical labor of the construction type involves way to much back work usually. Its a dead end physically. Sitting in a machine all day that vibrates the crap out of you is not good either. Driving a truck sucks. There are a whole lot of jobs that are just not made for our skeleton and muscles long term.

Sitting in a cool stream with water moving past you with a beer or some wine is absolutely wonderful. Especially after a day of kayaking. If you have your tents already up and ready to go for the night its extraordinarily pleasing. Hiking and camping and such is pure heaven. Its crazy how your body can adapt to a rougher life style if you give it some time. Having the weather around you like Yellowstone in the early summer is fascinating. You get sleet snow hail storms and then perfect days. (would not want to be there now though) But no sitting in a stream in Yellowstone unless you go closer to the boiling vents, thats a bit risky.

Beat me to it.

The two bits that had me rolling when I saw it on TV for the first time as a kid, not sure which movies but:

- the part where he was swinging on the parallel bars and dismounted downstairs

- "does your dog bite?"
- "no"
- ensuing sequence

:lol he was a genius at that role. Then you watch Steve Martin try and it's mediocre at best

Strange how he's kind of forgotten. My mom was a big Peter Sellers fan so I saw all the Pink Panther movies. Later saw Dr. Strangelove. Then later, Being There. I can't remember much about the movie other than at the time, I thought it was great. Had to do with death and moving on I think. He was brilliant. At least in the handful of things I saw him in.

Wow...I can't believe he died 40+ years ago.

I refused to watch Steve Martin do it. Peter Sellers was fucking hilarious.

My father loved those movies.
Also introduced me to "Being There"

Historic heatwave/drought in China.

A record-breaking heatwave (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/gallery/2022/aug/24/china-heatwave-scorching-temperatures-and-severe-drought-in-pictures) combined with a months-long drought during the usual flood season has wreaked havoc across China’s usually water-rich south. It has dried up parts of the Yangtze River (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/aug/22/china-drought-causes-yangtze-river-to-dry-up-sparking-shortage-of-hydropower) and dozens of tributaries, drastically affecting hydropower capacity and causing rolling blackouts and power rationing as demand for electricity spikes. There is now concern about future food supply.

Even Pay, an analyst at Trivium China who specialises in agriculture, said her immediate concern was for fresh produce.

“The kinds of fresh vegetables that supply the local markets where people buy their produce each day – that’s the category that is least likely to be in a major irrigation area, and which is not likely to be strategically prioritised in a national push to protect grain and oil feeds,” she said.

Crop losses would also hit supply chains and exacerbate supply problems, Pay said, as a Chinese city’s produce supply was often grown close to that city, but would have to be sourced from further away and could rot on longer journeys.

Pay said the concerns were mainly domestic, and that categories of food that would affect the global markets were “keeping pretty safe”. But she said attention should be paid to rapeseed if the drought was still going when crops are planted in the autumn.

China is now relying more heavily on its own corn production – 4% of which was grown in drought affected Sichuan and Anhui – after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine drastically destabilised global supplies.

Pay added:“I think we’re going to start to see reports of livestock farmers getting hit. A lot of pig farmers have upscaled in recent years … There are big intensive vertical farms, and if the AC gets cut off [the pigs] are not going to be in good shape.”
Pay was relatively optimistic about the measures announced on Tuesday, and its call for tailored local solutions. The order to divert water sources would probably help areas where water is inaccessible, she said, and subsidies have already been announced.

“But we’ve now had 35 straight days of heat warnings. We have dry season water levels, or below typical dry season water levels. The conditions are very, very extreme and there’s no question that there will be some loss of crops.”

The season has shifted.
Its starts later and ends later.

But I read that some of the depressions that have formed this year would not develop further due to high level winds creating shear conditions.
The water has more than enough heat though. We still need rain so maybe some tropical lows come ashore.

Pretty decent chance we hit 100 at some point in September, which if we hit it one more time would tie 2009 for most days of 100+ in a year. Tomorrow and Monday are supposed to be a degree or two above average (94 or 95 is average this time of year) but we're supposed to drop a few degrees below average after that for a few days. Nice thing is even if it hits 100 after say the first week of September it's not likely to be every day like it was in July or even June when the days it wasn't 100+ it would mostly be 98 or 99, thanks to the days getting shorter pretty quickly. September is usually a pretty hot month here though and our hottest temperature ever recorded (111 or 112, I forget which) was in September of 2000 if I remember right.

Heat Index is bad at measuring extreme heat

IN THE LATE 1970s, a physicist and textiles engineer in Texas named Robert Steadman published a paper called “The Assessment of Sultriness (https://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/apme/18/7/1520-0450_1979_018_0861_taospi_2_0_co_2.xml).” The title reflected an unpleasant sort of steaminess—how temperature and humidity combine to make life hard on the body. To do it, he drew on a long history of experimentation. In the 18th century, people climbed into ovens warmed to 250 degrees Fahrenheit to see how long they could suffer, as they watched steaks cook beside them. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, researchers observed people sweat in Turkish baths and reported from mines where they measured the ambient conditions as workers collapsed from heat exhaustion. Later on, the military picked up more of the testing, deriving equations for how blood flow, sweat, and breathing respond to atmospheric extremes.

What was unique to Steadman was his intimate knowledge of clothes; he was known for projects like a universal sizing system for garments, and motors that could spin fine cotton yarn. After all, he theorized, people are rarely naked in the heat, so our perception of it must be mediated by a combination of physiology and clothing. His formulas assumed precise percentages of how much skin would be covered with fabric, and how specific mixes of air and fiber would transfer heat from the air.

What’s surprising is that, for a set of calculations developed by a textiles researcher, Steadman’s measure of sultriness proved useful for weather forecasters, especially in the United States. In 1990, a scientist at the National Weather Service adapted them with Steadman’s key features more or less intact. Henceforth, the sultriness index came to be known more (or perhaps less) pithily as the “heat index," though it's also sometimes called the “apparent temperature” or “real feel.”

So was 2022 a record breaker?

In what way? For SA?

The basic modeling for climate change says the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere and oceans will continue to rise.
This will be accompanied by very erratic temp variation. So different regions climate might take a big shift in precipitation, and at the same time have very low temps with very high temps. As the atmosphere, ocean and land exchange heat with each other this will involve possible shifts of ocean currents which will then shift the climate of certain areas drastically. The easy part is the temperature is rising. The temp highs and lows will be erratic. Precipitation will be erratic. Storms will be more severe in amount of precipitation and wind. Long term tides will be more difficult to predict as ocean currents change.

It would be nice if we could know what parts of the country might shift to crop yielding areas to plan ahead. Looks like all buildings and housing is gonna require better insulation and stability in storms. This is just part of it. Gonna cost a shitload of money, already has.

Set record for most days over 90 degrees.
Second place for over 100 degrees.
Second lowest rainfall total.

There is more but I guess the post title is what you wanted.
One caveat is that our averages for this year much more accurate than say the record for the lowest rainfall in 1917.
We have more measuring devices in a larger area of the city. Within the city there was a good deal of variation this year in rainfall.
